Trying the whole ‘working out at night’ thing.

We went to the Payson Temple Open House yesterday afternoon and it was absolutely beautiful.

I don’t know if you have noticed but I really like these two girls.

Brooke had her little friends there with her too!

I am a morning worker outer.  I’ve always been this way and probably always will be BUT I am trying the night thing 2 times a week out because Megan’s bootcamp classes are bomb (she has classes in the early morning too but I don’t have anyone to help with Brooke at that time).

In just 45 minutes she gets our heart rate way up, we end up working every muscle (including the ones that I didn’t know that I had) hard, she plays the best music and she is super encouraging!  The class also has a ton of variety in each circuit which keeps me from getting bored like I normally do when strength training.  I also love the group aspect of this class.  Working out with other people is always way more fun for me.

PS if you want to join in on her classes just email her at [email protected]

I know I say this a lot but I mean it this time—> I really want to go into my next marathon training cycle stronger than ever.  When my legs were completely fatigued and wanting to quit during the Newton Hills last week I decided that if I want to make this sub 3 thing happen then I need to be stronger.  I need to strength train to gain more muscle to help me conquer those hills and to continue to stay injury free.  Just running with a tiny bit of strength/core work each week isn’t going to get me to where I want to be.

During bootcamp we rotate through a bunch of circuits at a fast pace which I love because you don’t have time to think about how tired you are:)

A few of the things we did yesterday:

My first time ever using TRX and then throwing the medicine ball as hard as we could, catching it and repeating.

1234

This was my first time using the ropes too.  This rope is 50 lbs… no wonder why my heart rate soared during this exercise.  Push-ups, lunges, squats, planks and much much more.  I think I will be cursing Megan’s name this morning when I can’t get out of bed.

The hardest part of getting myself to work out at night is just getting changed into workout clothes.  Once I change I am excited to go workout but I really have to talk myself into changing.  Weird.

Brooke participated in two activities that I think every kid absolutely adores:

1.  Blowing bubbles in their milk.  She did this for at least 20 minutes.

IMG 9678

2.  Running around a room full of balloons.

IMG 9685

I’m pretty obsessed with our nightly tradition of popcorn on the couch in our pjs.  I have a feeling this will be our thing for a very long time.

Interesting read—>  Kara Goucher just wrote a post about what she has been doing differently with her diet this year.

I definitely prefer morning workouts, it’s just what works for me.

I love your striped dress, where did it come from?

My eating got a little out of control and unhealthy leading up to Boston. I’m just trying to clean it up and eat more whole foods.
I love 6 am workouts! It’s the best way to start the day.
I drink chamomile tea ever night before bed to relax.

I’ve tried nighttime and I just can’t do it, my body doesn’t work at that time! Any time other than early morning feels odd for running, but night is the worst. Plus I already have sleep trouble and that throws it off even more.

Before bed I like to have fruit and dark chocolate, lately it’s every night and always hits the spot :)

Reply

Hello ladies.! This is my first time posting to a blog. I read both of your blogs everyday! I love them! Michele, I was just on your blog reading about your sleeping issues. Ever try cutting out the dark chocolate before bed? I was having sleeping issues and was eating chocolate before bed. I cut it out of my diet and have had much success. The caffeine that was in it was just enough to mess with me and keep me up. Just a thought. Dawn

Reply

Hi Dawn, I actually had the same thought as I wrote out this comment, since I’m also someone who doesn’t do well with late day caffeine. I love my chocolate so might try the melatonin first that many people recommended. I also seem to still have problems when I don’t do chocolate before bed so not sure. Thanks for the input :)

I’m an afternoon worker outer. I can’t get myself going in the morning and once my boys are in bed my body pretty much goes to sleep.
I’m trying to fix my nutrition completely. It’s hard to get it changed though! I love goat cheese and crackers before bed, but I’m trying to stop that too and just have some decaf chai tea instead.

Reply

I’m also not an afternoon or evening workout girl… I’ve tried and tried and TRIED, but mornings still work best for me!

Reply

I am taking it easy with my training because I have a baby growing inside me :D I’m aiming to try and keep a 10k/6m distance as regular, but slowing down as I need to…

Nightly popcorn is the best idea ever. My nightly tradition at the moment is leftover easter eggs, but popcorn might have to replace that… Or blowing bubbles into my milk! ;)

I’ve always been an evening workout person apart from when I am marathon training (good to get it out of the way early!). I like the time it gives me after work to clear my head in the fresh air.

Reply

I read Kara’s article yesterday too. She’s written before about focusing more on plant based, which is really interesting. I am always interested in what the elites do for training and nutrition! I try to eat clean, but I still eat a little of everything and enjoy things, even if they aren’t healthy on occasion.

I would rather workout in the morning, but for the time being, I’m still a post-work workout person.

I usually foam roll then read before bed, but that is about it!

Reply

-I’ve been trying to eat cleaner lately. I’ve been slowly eliminating most processed foods from my diet. I’ve been pretty successful so far, and I’ve been feeling much better and more energized!
-I am a morning worker outer :) I love getting it done in the AM so I have the rest of the day to complete the rest of my tasks!
– My nightly tradition is to eat a bowl of Greek yogurt and blueberries!

That Bootcamp looks awesome! There is a similar program at my gym. I love it because it’s different and fun!

First-thing-in-the-morning-worker-outer. The thought of showering in the morning and then again at night after a workout is just too overwhelming ;).

Boom chica pop popcorn at night is amazing!

Reply

I am a morning workout person! I could do strength training in the evening but when it comes to my run it has to happen first thing! Even though I’m tired it is always the best way to start my day.

MAJOR change to my food intake… I reduced my carb and sugar intake like woah. It took up most of my diet but I wasn’t seeing the physical results I wanted from running and strength training. Then when I changed what I was eating (starting November of last year) I’ve seen the most difference. Crazy how food works! Recently wrote a post about it on my blog! “More Kitch, Less Crunch” :)

Working out in the morning works best with my schedule, it’s just so hard to get out of bed and CHANGE-like u said!- when I could always sleep in an extra hour. However I know that when I get home from an 8 hour work day being on my feet, working out sounds like the least appealing thing to do. It’s a struggle decision each day! Ps, I chose to sleep in this morning … I’ll be kicking my butt for that in about 9 hours! :)

That church is beautifuL!!

Reply

I prefer afternoons to work out but that rarely is doable. Evening runs lately have been nice since we have mostly good weather here now. But you won’t see me going to a gym class at night. I just don’t feel that motivated.

Reply

Morning workouts are my favorite! I’m trying to add strength training or Pilates/yoga each afternoon so I’m strong for when marathon training begins.
I haven’t tried anything new with my nutrition, but I want to some habits like my sweet potato + roasted veggie lunches and getting enough healthy fats. I’m considering adding green smoothies to get more greens.

Reply

It sounds like you are really embracing the off season Janae! I could not be happier for you enjoying the outside world. That’s how I felt when I was resting, recovering, etc post marathon and into our honeymoon.

Since I was busy enjoying life, my nutrition changed drastically because I wasn’t really too focused on it. I guess it’s time to get back on track soon :-)

Reply

The one thing I’m doing very differently this training cycle is eating a lot more red meat! And it seems to be helping. I’m not nearly as tired as I used to be when I trained for marathons. I think it’s helped a ton, and I’ve actually lost a lot of weight this time around too, which is strange.

I think I prefer working out in the mornings, but it’s a tough call. I have a very hard time getting out of bed in the AM and my runs aren’t nearly as strong in the morning. I just really like getting it out of the way first thing :)

Annnd my nightly tradition is probably Oreos. Not my healthiest habit, but probably my favorite one.

Not related to any of your questions, but you have FANTASTIC hair. That is all.

As much as I wish I wasn’t, I am finding that I am totally a morning workout-er. I just am happier and more relaxed at work when I do it first thing. I don’t love getting up in the 5 o’clock hour (I always curse my alarm)…but it isn’t so bad when the sun rises earlier. I definitely go to bed early! I also like how I can then go on walks or do other fitness related activities in the evenings and I don’t have to worry about how I will fit my run in.

Reply

I probably work out best later in the day but I love morning workouts because you get it out of the way! I hate thinking about it all day long…

Reply

I am definitely a morning worker outer! I have tried the night thing a handful of times but it never felt right. I haven’t tried it in years though so maybe I should, just to see :) Best diet change I ever made was going vegetarian (well, meatless, I do eat some fish on rare occasion)…I never felt better!

Reply

I run in the morning on the weekends so I can beat the heat, but during the week I already get up at 5:45 for work. There is no way I could run before work, that would make me a middle of the night worker outer. If I am really exhausted and finding it hard to get out the door, I will change into my workout clothes as soon as I get home from work, take a nap, and then go out for my run. It is much, much safer than changing into pajamas for my nap…because I know I will not end up running!

I have been a vegetarian for years, but only recently have I started monitoring how much iron I have been getting in my diet. It has only been a few weeks, so I’m not sure if there have been any tangible benefits, but eating a healthy, balanced diet is never a bad thing.

Reply

I prefer working out in the late afternoon, after work- I feel like I have so much more energy from all of the food I’ve been eating all day. I struggle with my energy level when I run first thing in the morning after only eating one meal. Maybe it’s all in my head, but the only race I’ve won had a later start time of 1 pm instead of early morning :)

Your bootcamp looks so fun! Looking forward to hearing more about it!

Reply

I gotta workout in the mornings. If I tell myself I’ll do it later in the day it never happens. Interested to see when I’ll be able to workout after the baby comes!

Reply

I started running as a morning workout-er, then the bleakness of winter pushed me into being a late afternoon and evening runner. I’m trying to get back into the morning run routine, because I like having a run in the bag before work, so that’s it’s done and I can go about my day without stressing over it.

And I so get the having to talk yourself into changing into workout clothes thing. For some reason my brain rebels and procrastinates putting on workout clothes, but once I get them on, it’s like I become a superhero version of myself and am ready to dash off to adventure.

Reply

i’m with you on the morning workout thing. to me, it just doesn’t make sense to go from pjs-real clothes-workout clothes-real clothes-pjs. and then having to do your hair/makeup twice, too. i’m all about efficiency! sometimes i even sleep in my workout gear so that i can be that much lazier in the morning. haha.

Reply

I used to love working out in the evenings when I could count on them being mine, but since becoming mommy, I am ALL about morning workouts! If I get up before my little man, I know I can guarantee a good workout and healthy dose of endorphins, and be showered and ready for the day by the time he’s up. It’s hard all the time to get up but I never regret getting it done after the fact!

Reply

Wow that workout looks intense! I always prefer working out in the morning. I find it hard to get motivated later in the day. But when I do workout in the afternoon/evening I always feel really great after!

Reply

I definitely prefer a morning workout, then it’s done for the day and I have earnt myself a big delicious breakfast!!

Reply

When to work out is a tough decision. There are things about morning workouts I love such as getting it out of the way, higher caloric burn throughout the day, and the feeling of bliss all day. But I get way better workouts in the afternoon. I’m just stronger and faster when I exercise in the p.m., so I think my perfect workout schedule would consist of both a.m. and p.m.

Reply

I love working out in the morning too, and I can totally relate about the difficulty of getting changed in the evening! In the morning it is so much easier because you are half asleep still so you just do it before you notice. Because of life circumstance however (I go to bed later than I used to bc I wait for my husband to get home from work before going to sleep – I can sleep until I know he’s safe at home) I get up later than I used to. So now during the weekdays any workouts I do are in the evening. It’s also hard to make sure my nutrition is on point then, because my stomach is more touchy in the evening.

Reply

I prefer working out in the morning. I like to have it “out of the way” so that I’m not thinking about it all day. I only work out in the evening on days that I absolutely can’t fit it into my schedule earlier.
My nightly tradition is digging into a box of dry cereal. Love it!

Reply

Looks like it was a gorgeous day in Utah! I am terrible at working out at night. My sweet spot is right after work on weekdays and in the morning on weekends. Nutrition wise, I like to start my day with a smoothie filled with veggies and fruit. It helps set the tone for the day and I get most my servings in!

Reply

I am solely a morning worker outer too… One night a week in the winter my running club has a track workout at night. In order to get to this I start the day in the clothes I’ll wear to track because I’m the same way that you are!! The whole changing thing is the hardest part! Ha.

Reply

I prefer to workout midday, but that’s usually impossible! Most of the time, I workout at night :)

Reply

My work schedule is so insane, that I just work out whenever I can. I work for a company in China, so most of my conference calls and urgent tasks happen during the night. I usually hit the gym in the afternoon, or run outdoors in the morning.

Reply

I’m generally a morning workout person too, especially for yoga and running. I feel so much better when I work out to start my day. Lately I have been struggling to get back into a routine after a hard winter, and I keep hitting snooze on my alarm until it’s too late to run and I have to leave it for after work. I find that I’m too tired in the evening to get a quality workout in, and I am much more likely to find excuses to skip working out if I leave it for the end of the day.

Reply

I wish I could work out at night but I sweat like a little piggy, so I would have to shower. Considering I have to coax myself to shower from 10AM to about 4PM on the daily, I think workouts at night wouldn’t be too promising for my hygiene haha!

I eat oatmeal with pb + banana every night. Or Ben and Jerrys. lol

Reply

I am definitely more of a morning person. And I totally agree about the putting on the clothes part. Once I change into them, I feel great! But it’s hard to make that initial movement to change–especially if it’s an evening workout.

My nightly tradition involves Wheat Thins and gummy bears. I don’t think you can ever go wrong with those two. :)

Reply

It’s hard to beat popcorn at night! It sounds a little gross, but I’ve been sprinkling nutritional yeast (Bragg’s brand)on my popcorn, it gives it a cheesy flavor and adds a nutrition boost.

Reply

I work out first thing in the morning. Working out at night feels so much harder for some reason!

Yonanas every night before bed. YUM.

Do you prefer working out in the morning or at night? In your perfect world what time would you work out every day?

I love working out midday. In the winter, it’s the warmest part of the day, and in the summer, I like to get out before it gets too warm. I work the 3-11 shift right now so I usually run around 10-11am, unless it’s a long run where I have to get out earlier.

I wanted to update you on my half marathon in Central Park last weekend! I shaved 12 minutes off my time from my half marathon in October and that even included a bathroom break! The bigger victory in my opinion is the fact that I made it through this training cycle injury free and didn’t have any IT band pain that plagued me last year. In my post-race haze, I signed up for another half in mid-June. So I’m recovering a little bit but have already jumped back into training mid-way through another training plan.

Question for you though – for your weekly speedwork, do you do better when you mix it up? Like Yasso 800’s one week, 1 mile repeats the next week? I typically just do Yasso 800’s and increase it by 1 lap every week, and alternate that with a tempo run.

Thanks for being so awesome! You were such a huge inspiration to me when I started running and now as I continue to get faster and improve.

Reply

I work out after work during the week because it’s a great way to calm down after hectic days. I have to hit the gym on my way home though because once I’m home and in my PJs, I’m not leaving for anything. If I have plans in advance, that’s fine, I won’t change into PJs.

Reply

Janae, getting stronger doesn’t mean you have to feel sore, unable to walk the next day. Have you ever considered working with a personal trainer to develop a runner specific workout for you that addresses your weak and easily injured areas?
I like working out midmorning, about 3 hours after getting up, but since I’m usually at work then, I workout evenings.
This year I’ve been working to add more protein to my diet. I would totally prefer a pasta based diet though, haha.

Reply

I am actually eating a 500 calorie breakfast and not a 150 one.

What don’t I eat before I go to bed? I feel like that is when the flood gates open.

Reply

I prefer working out in the morning but I usually have more energy during a workout when I do it at night. The only time I do night workouts are when I have fitness events and things to attend.

I teach similar classes and they have really helped me out with my running. I usually run in the warmer months, so when it gets cold I do more classes and strength training. When it started to warm up here I went for a run and found out that I had cut 0:45 seconds off my mile time! It really helps :)

Reply

I cannot work out in the morning, at least not early morning. Though sometimes getting your clothes out and getting out the door in the evening can be hard.

Reply

Definitely a morning person when it comes to working out. When I was in Munich a few weeks ago, I strength trained at night because that was the only town available to me. It felt so strange and I actually never felt as motivated as the morning. Once I got started I always felt fine. Strange thing is many years ago, I worked out at night then switched to mornings because of work. I could never imagine going back to that now.

It’s so funny, I workout after work and I’m trying to start working out before work! Fingers crossed it goes well!

I’m most definitely a morning workout person. 7AM is a good time for me- its sleeping in a bit but not too late in the morning.
Lately I have been focusing on getting in more whole foods. I do pretty well with it but stray sometimes but everything in balance works best for me.

Reply

I can’t sleep at night unless I eat something sweet before going to bed. I don’t really understand how that helps me sleep but it works !

The only workout I can do at night is hot yoga … I’ve tried running in the evening but it gets me too wired. I prefer taking my puppy to the park in the evenings so she can get a workout in !

Reply

I just started doing TRX at my house this past month and it’s no joke. I absolutely am loving it and wonder if I will go back to lifting weights?!? I recently gave up caffeine. Mostly cuz I don’t need it at all. So wide awake in the morning–which is when I work out. My ideal time is 5 am and that is when it gets done. I don’t think I could work out at night unless I always worked out at night and totally trained myself but I think for me it works best to pick a time and try to stick w/ it. I always, always have a snack before bed! Helps me sleep w/ a full belly.

Reply

I eat salted peanuts every night before bed! I love working out at night. It’s my absolute FAVOURITE.

Reply

I’m a night worker outer, but am hoping to make a conscious effort to try and workout in the AM with the new training plan I’ll be starting here very soon. It’s not going to be easy- on account of not being a morning person and all… ;)

Reply

Hi J! I actually go back and forth between morning and night depending on the day and my group fitness teaching schedule. I have more energy during night-time workouts for sure, but you’ve got to get a good snack in before hitting the gym of course. And that usually means a later dinner. TRX, the ropes, all of that good stuff will get your legs where they need to be for running! Go get ’em! :)

Reply

I am definitely a morning worker outer as well. If I wait until the end of the day, I get lazy. And I like to take the least amount of time away from the family as possible.

The kids and I usually watch a cooking show before bed and the hubs and I probably eat ice cream or oreos as least 2 nights before bed :)

Reply

I prefer working out at night. Mornings are too busy with work – evenings are a bit more free. I’m actually a solid mid-afternoon runner/worker-outer though since that is really the only free time I get.

Reply

I’m definitely more of a morning worker-outer. ;) If I exercise in the evening, I find that I have a difficult time going to sleep. On Mondays, I teach a 4:30 PM BodyPump class and I think that’s the latest I could go without it affecting my sleep. Changing into workout clothes later in the day is always a little hard…that’s why I usually just wear my workout clothes all the day long. ;) Wish I could check out one of Megan’s classes! They sound awesome!

I feel so much better when I’ll able to run first thing in the morning, but I will take any time.
How did the pureflow 4 work for you? How is it different from the 3?

I was never a big fan of strength, but I developed a week knee, and I’ve found when I’m doing a lot of strength it really really helps! Nightly tradition at our house is a pre bedtime dance party with my 11 month old :)

I’m trying this new thing called don’t eat everything that isn’t bolted down, and I do really well with that until about 2pm and then I want to eat ALL the things. So, work in progress, I suppose.

Mentally I love working out in the morning because it’s done before my work day even starts and I feel much better. But I reaaalllly enjoy the 10am or so work out.

No real nighttime habits or rituals, besides brushing my teeth, washing my face, and all that. My boyfriend and I don’t have cable, and we were recently robbed (they took all our electronics- laptop, tv, playstation 3, chromecast) so we have no way of watching anything anyways. Lots of reading now…. haha

Gah, I remember those straw bowls, brings back such fond memories of childhood!

In a perfect world, the sweet (workout) spot for me is 5:30-6a.

I am TOTALLY a morning workouter! After a full day of work, there’s almost zero chance I’ll motivate myself to do anything after dinner and before bedtime. I can completely sympathize with your needing to talk yourself into getting changed, it’s such an inconvenience for me! ;) I always change into my workout clothes when I would normally get changed into pajamas at night, so I’m already dressed when I get up in the morning. It gives me a reason to get he most comfortable workout clothes ever!

Reply

What time do you work out in the evening? ‘re you working out twice a day now?

Reply

I definitely prefer working out and getting my sweat on in the mornings. As the day goes on, I find it harder to pull together the energy and motivation to change into workout clothes. I can’t remember the last time I ran or did a workout after 5pm – probably my last big relay when I was running in the dark at 10pm!

My husband and I have popcorn for “dessert” at least three times a week. It is the perfect after dinner TV/movie watching snack! Plus, it’s healthy! Win Win.

Reply

The man and I always have ice cream on the couch after dinner. Not the most exciting thing, but it’s the best!

Reply

I am totally a morning “worker outer” – the ONLY way I can do it in the evening is if I am meeting friends/team practice. Otherwise, even if I have the best intentions, it does not happen…am too tired from the day and just want to get into my pajamas and lounge! lol

Reply

I typically like to workout in the morning but I’m struggling with getting up before work, 5 am is rough-I just need to do it! Often after a long day of work I’m so tired for a hard workout, I try to keep evening workouts to classes I can’t cancel on or relaxing walks.

I read every night before bed, I often fall asleep mid page and then have to read back the next night because I don’t remember what I read!

Reply

I work out in the morning and evening, (I run to and from work). :)

I think that’s awesome that you are doing the bootcamp! Strength training is so boring for me too but that class looks like so much fun! I know it’s important to you that you gain muscle and I’m sure you will!

Night time popcorn is the best!

Reply

Cute dress! I’m also not that into nighttime workouts, but sometimes I do strength stuff after dinner. I prefer more relaxing night activities…like a good book or walking my dog. I’m signing up for a nigh class at the gym over the summer, so we’ll see how that goes.

I cut out all added sugar and grains for the three months before my wedding, and definitely noticed a difference. That was almost two years ago, and I’m thinking about cutting out added sugar again. I’m going to try giving up nut butter for a couple of weeks, too, and eat whole nuts instead. My nut butter consumption is getting a little out of control…

Reply

I’ve pretty much always been a late morning exerciser. I usually work in the afternoons, so I get the majority of my workouts in between 10 and noon. So its kinda like morning workouts for me, but I definitely wish I could jump out of bed a little earlier and get it done.

Reply

I agree with strength making you much stronger for a marathon! However, regularly incorporating hills into your everyday outside runs will help you, too. I hardly ever encounter completely flat roads, so hills come into my runs whether I like it or not!

Reply

In the perfect world I’d be at the gym at 8:30 a.m, however I have to be at work at 8 am so that’s never happening.

Reply

I can’t work out in the mornings so I always do my workouts in the evenings after work. I need to get into a boot camp class… that looks like a killer workout!

Reply

I like the nice, peaceful feeling of an early morning run. But I also like sleep. So I prefer morning workouts, but sometimes sleep wins. I need to master getting up to my alarm since I think I’m going to start training for my first marathon and I gotta get those miles in, and also because I’m a full-fledged adult and it shouldn’t be this hard!

As for nutrition, I finally picked up some energy chews (instead of gels/guu) at Whole Foods before my 11 mile training run this weekend. GAME CHANGER. I didn’t want to barf like when I take gels, for starters, plus since they are like fruit snacks, it’s a lot easier to pop one in your mouth occasionally as you run. Honey Stingers Passion Pomegranate chews. NOMS.

The ropes looks so intense!! I definitely prefer working out in the morning, but since having my baby I’m more in the mindset of work out whenever he naps/whenever I can! haha ;)

I actually work out both in the morning at in the evening! I run in the morning and lift in the evening. I LOVE the set-up and the fact that I have the ability, time, and access to do that!

Reply

I wayyyy prefer working out in the morning. It gets my day started off on the right foot, and I don’t have time to think of a million excuses throughout the day to keep me from going! I also like being able to head home after a long day of work and focus on doing fun things like walking my dog, cooking dinner, etc instead of heading to the gym.

Reply

I prefer working out in the afternoon. I don’t mind going to the gym later but it’s usually crowded which I don’t like.

I have had more protein lately which helps me feel full. My sugar intake has gone up a bit and I want to cut that back again. I think I’m less fatigued when I have less sugar. (I’m not a huge candy fan but I do like chocolate).

I like a little almond butter on a brown rice cake before bed. It keeps me full and I feel like I had something I enjoy without feeling wired from sugar.

Reply

Working out first thing in the morning (after a quick snack) is the best for me. It energizes me and makes me feel like I should do better during the day. Unfortunately, getting up early can be one of the hardest things to do so I also do a fair bit of afternoon workouts. Like right now, at 3:45 pm, I just got home and heading out for a run. You do what you gotta do.

Reply

Being the accomplished runner that you are, I’m sure you’ve heard or read this book, but just in case- have you read the book “Run Less, Run Faster” ? It takes a totally different training mentality than what you use, but it might be something to look into and at the very least, pull some speed drills from.

Having just moved to Italy, I’m on the “Mediterranean Diet.” Lots of olive oil, pasta, and wine. After three months, I’ve surprisingly not gained any weight!

In my ideal world, I would work out in the morning, but not until 8/8:30 am.
Last year I was running with a group of women and we didn’t meet till 9:30, after our kids were in school and it was so perfect! I had a light breakfast, I was hydrated, awake and ready to go!
Really focusing on nutrition right now since I am not moving much. I don’t need as much food and what I do eat, has to be really healthy.
I love popcorn at night also! :)

Strength training for sure… is a must! My adductors and abductors thank me every time =). And there’s a boat in the gym?

Thanks for that Kara post btw. I jumped to Lottie’s blog from there. Interesting… not sure I could do it. That would mean giving up apple fritters for you =).

I totally hear ya on being stronger and I had the exact same though when completing Boston this year. I ended up being so much slower than I wanted but as it was my first marathon, I reminded myself, HEY IT’S JUST GREAT YA FINISHED! I am already signed up for a half-marathon and I can’t wait to work on strength training to improve my previous time!

I am a natural morning person, my brain and body shut down at about 8 PM haha, so i get up between 4:15 and 5 to workout. I would like to be able to workout in the evening, but by the time I put my three year old to bed I am wiped out! The best think I’ve noticed about getting up so early to workout is that I fall right to sleep at 10PM and sleep like the dead all night, unless my son wakes up :).

I cannot live without PB and dark chocolate in my life. Every.single.night.

LOVE LOVE LOVE TRX! I do both hot yoga and TRX along with my training – nice counter balance!

I’m a combo when it comes to workouts. Recently I’ve been doing my elliptical workout at night and do at least one 5k run really late at night. My long runs I prefer to do in the morning, but a lot of that is because the lake I run around is uber popular and you you have to find parking on the weekend and I live in Texas. I use to be mornings only, but sleep has has taken over in the past few months.

I love hummus, and sometimes have to force myself to not eat it every single night so that I have a real dinner. I also love peanut butter on a slice of healthy cinnamon bread! Yum!

I don’t think I shared this before, but Walmart has these glow in the dark balloons in the party section. I suggest getting her a pack when you will be outside in the evening this summer so she can chase it around.

I tried out a mostly paleo diet this past year and I absolutely loved it! I never felt better. I love bootcamp classes/barre classes. I think attending barre during my last marathon training cycle is what kept me injury free. I suffered a random blister on my foot during the race but that’s about it. I love working out in the mornings and that’s what I do on the weekends, but during the work week I have to work out at night.

I can’t train at night as i can never get to sleep after it. Late afternoon /early evening for me, and mornings during the weekends…

Wow that looks intense! But it sounds great too that you’re too busy with each set that you’re not paying attention to how long you’ve been working out.
