Now THIS is a good idea!

Last week I got to go hang out at ABC 4 Utah to talk a little bit more about the Boston Marathon!  For some reason I was crazy nervous for this one and forgot to look at the camera so ya know… but it still was a blast!

IMG 9469

While I was there I met a woman that came up with the best idea.  Hydr-8 !!!!!  She was on the show after me and once I found out about what she came up with I had to have one.

IMG 9446

She makes water bottles that keep you on track to drink enough water each day.  You fill it up at the beginning of the day and try to drink down to the line by the marked time! Half-way through your day you fill it up again.  Once you go through the water bottle twice you have hit your 8 cups of water goal for the day.  This has already helped me to drink more water.  I’ve turned it into a personal competition to make it through the water bottle by each time marked:)

You can order them HERE!

IMG 9441

This morning I started off with 15 minutes of yoga (I’m going to bootcamp tonight so keeping things light in the morning).  Yoga or a little bit of stretching each morning is my new goal.  I usually wake up and go straight to my computer to check emails as soon as I wake up but I’m stoked to start things off with some stretching/thinking before the Brookers wakes up.

IMG 9639 JPG

Also, setting the goal to keep fresh veggies on hand so I snack on them more and don’t go out to eat quite so much:)

IMG 0983

The salad I am loving—> turkey burger, grilled zucchini and red pepper, cucumbers, almost an entire avocado and Trader Joe’s Thai Peanut dressing.

IMG 0985

There was a random saucer in one of the aisles at Target and Brooke decided she was going to sit in it while I pushed her around.  She’s a smart little one and she thoroughly enjoyed her ride around Target like this.

Also, we’ve been taking our Lego building quite seriously lately.

PS here are my splits from the race.  Maybe I need to write a post about how to Positive Split your marathon like a boss.

TimesJanaeBoston2015

————————————————————–

Do you usually get in enough water each day?

What veggies do you eat the most of?  What’s veggies are always stocked in your refrigerator?

Do you usually positive split (2nd half slower than the 1st half), negative split (2nd half faster than the 1st half) or have pretty even splits when you race?

On a scale from 1-10 how is your day going?

I usually drink about 100 ounces of water per day and about 40 ounces of hot tea in the morning. I feel hydrated most of the time. I’m not as good about it on the weekends though.

I always have carrots, brussels sprouts, onions and zucchini/squash.

I’m generally pretty even, but lately my races have been positive splits. Working on it!

100 ounces of water plus tea… dang girl! You are awesome!

Reply

I always have a positive split, I generally fly and die every race. It’s something I am trying to work on. My day is at a ten I went for a hike with my dogs and had a great lunch:-).

Reply

I drink 8-10 glasses of water a day – if I don’t, I just don’t feel as great
Veggies = kale, spinach, broccoli, asparagus and have those on hand. I love trying new veggies too like purple cauliflower we are really loving these days!

My last marathon, was positive split- but really aiming for negative on the next marathon!
My day is a…7 :)

Reply

That water bottle sounds awesome! I need one!

Reply

Legos are a big favorite with us too! Love the water bottle idea. I always forget to drink enough until bedtime when I probably drink way too much and then sleep terribly. I need a reminder!

Reply

I’m the worst about drinking enough water.
I eat a lot of sweet potatoes, broccoli, mushrooms, and Brussels sprouts.
I almost always negative split. I love the feeling of a strong finish!
Today is a 7…lots of to-do list after two weekends of races in a row.

Reply

I love my water bottle. Ya da best. Did Megan tell you she got my one (not the same one) for my bday too? Haha. What can I say? I love me some H2o.

I probably eat bell peppers, broccoli, zucchini and spinach the most. That salad looks amazing. Feel free to make it for me anytime. I am such a giving friend. Giving you opportunities to serve me. I know. I know.

Most of my races are even splits. Once I get into the groove, I stay in it. And as Ross likes to remind me, I don’t push myself hard enough.

You look amazing in the interview. You are gorgeous, my friend.

Reply

And you negative split St George like a boss, so don’t get sown on yourself.

Reply

I think I get enough water, but I want one of those bottles anyway! Ordering now…
My favorite veggies are cucumbers, carrots, spinach, and tomato. However, I really only like them in stuff, not on their own.
I usually positive split because I really only have one speed and that slows down when I’m tired. Working on it.
On a scale from 1-10 how is your day going?
My day is a 7. Got some exciting plans for tonight, but right not it’s kind of blah

Reply

I don’t drink enough water AT ALL :( I MUST have that water bottle!!!

Favorite veggies: zucchini, carrots, Brussels sprouts , bell peppers. But I really love them all, I don’t discriminate.

As a newbie marathon-er I always positive split. whoops.

Reply

I drink 2-3 litres a day :)

I eat the most peppers and spinach… can I count onions? Cooked, obviously. Always have peppers, onions, spinach, and tomatoes in my fridge!

I have trouble with getting in a positive split, I realize I am probably running too hard in the beginning – do you have any suggestions for this?

My day is sitting at an 8 (soon to be a 9.5 once I’m off work) – I went for a run during my lunch break, it’s 66 degrees and very sunny, and my mom and I have a dinner and Paint Nite date tonight! If you don’t know what Paint Nite is, you should acquaint yourself with it because it is SO much fun for girls’ night or date night and it’s very reasonably priced! Often there are Groupons for it as well :) https://www.paintnite.com/

Reply

i’m usually an even splitter. i’ve tried to do positive splits but it always backfires! nice job pulling it off.

Reply

* I drink 4-5 L of water a day, the other half of my day is spent in the bathroom :)
* I always have spinach, spring mix salad, peppers, and carrots in my fridge
* My day has been a 9! I ran 5.21 miles while my daughter was in preschool, had a healthy lunch, went and bought mother’s day and my sisters bday presents and stopped by my favorite cupcake place for a GF cupcake (now you know why I ate a healthy lunch and what got me through those 5.21 miles… A CUPCAKE! )

Reply

My day is a 10 :) I always have frozen veggies on reserve plus fresh Brussels sprouts are a must – can’t get enough roasted Brussels sprouts!

Reply

Yay for a 10 day… those are the best! Good call on the brussels sprouts! You are inspiring me to get some of those today!

Reply

The only way to positive split in Boston is to go out wicked easy- or to sit down and take a break right before the half!
I usually positive split a marathon by 2-3 minutes and I was pumped that this year’s Boston was just that :-)
I’m terrrrrrible at drinking enough water but am working on it!

Reply

I always have sweet potatoes, beets, celery, and cauliflower in the fridge. And of course whatever is seasonally fresh, like squashs in the summer and fall.
I am great at doing negative splits in training but then always positive split on race day. I really need to work on that!

Reply

My day is a 6. An ok day, nothing spectacular, but that’s ok.

On running days I stay hydrated, but on cross training days, not so much. I need to be more consistent.

I’m not a huge veggie lover, but eat a lot of spinach, tomato, avocado and cucumber salads. Occasionally I will roast broccoli and eat that, too.

I always have positive splits on my races. I think that I control my speed so much on the treadmill that I can’t translate it to outside running (training or races.). I hope to spend more time outside this Spring and summer and work on keeping my pace even and eventually having negative splits.

Reply

I positive split like it is no one’s business.

And I really should just start to grow sweet potatoes, spinach leaves, and popcorn (because in my dream world you can grow your own popcorn…boom chica pop, specifically) because I go through so much of them!

Have a wonderful night!!!!

Reply

I drink about 3-4 Nalgenes worth (depending on the amount of running I do), so 96-128. Whew. That’s a lot.

When I’m out for my training runs, I normally negative split. Though when I race I tend to run even splits.

Cucumbers are my favorite!

Reply

Ran 20 miles today! Yeah buddy!
I drink at least 80 oz a day, or try to. Makes a big difference in my running and how I feel.

Reply

WAY TO GO KATHEE on your 20 miles! That is awesome:)

Reply

I always seem to drink a ton of water from the time I wake up through lunch and then it’s all downhill from there. I seem to fall off the wagon in the afternoon and forget to drink water until I’m on my way home from work stuck in traffic dehydrated.

Reply

I am going to say that my day is a 10! It started out about -10! So we have quite an improvement. My aunt is in C(coronary)ICU and was on a ventilator. I saw her last night…back up to Saturday and thought was she may not make it through the night. This morning, she was taken off the venitilator and was talking to my parents. She is not out of the woods yet but I was so thankful when I received this news this morning.

Aaaaaand!!!! I get to run this afternoon…in the SUNSHINE!!! :)

Reply

Aimee, that is incredible news. I am so happy for your family and aunt. Keep me updated on how she is doing and enjoy your run in the sunshine!

Reply

Congrats on another news appearance! I love that water bottle and totally need it. Although I guess it wouldn’t fit in the cup-holder in the car! Nice work on yoga, Janae! :)

Reply

I’m pretty good about drinking water, but I balance it out by also drinking diet coke :) I wouldn’t want to be too healthy!

My day is a 10 right now because I’m off work!! Woohoo

Reply

Love that water bottle idea.! I was always REALLY bad about drinking water, until I started using an app called “Hydrocoach” it basically does the same thing, except on your phone. I like it because it gives you updates, and since I’m always on my phone.. I know :p
and awe you look so great on the news.!! you’re just becoming quite the celebrity.

Reply

I don’t normally drink enough water, need to start drinking more.
my veggies are always green/red peppers and cucumbers, carrots. I went to TJ today for the peanut dressing, trying it tonight :)
all my runs have been positive splits, no matter what I tell myself mentally it always ends that way.
Today is a 6. so far a typical Monday.

Reply

– I need that cup ASAP! I am so bad about drinking water throughout the day!
– I mostly eat spinach, squash, and peppers! Those are my favorites! I like to throw them together into huge salads :)
– It takes me a few miles to warm up, so my half marathons are usually negative splits!
– My day has been a solid 7. It would be better if I had run this morning, but today is rest day:)

I would like to know what you do at that Bootcamp! I love BootCamp workouts! Have fun!!

Reply

I drink more than enough water (soo many bathroom breaks! haha) but I have to be very deliberate about my veggie intake. I have to plan out in my head roughly what I’m going to eat throughout the day so I can be sure to get veggies in with at least 2 of the meals. I could probably do a little better but I’m working on it. Baby steps :)

I ran the London marathon yesterday and have spent today recovering! I definitely ran a crazy positive split – I went out way too fast (as usual!) and my legs were dead after about mile 18. Still, I broke my PR by about 40 minutes, which was very unexpected!! The bad news? I ran it in 4.01.08. So close to breaking 4 hours… I guess that will have to be my next race goal!! :)
Oh and I am NOT drinking enough water and my favorite vegetable is a fruit – avocados for the win!
Any other recovery tips for me for the week? :)

Reply

HUGE CONGRATS on your marathon and a PR yesterday! 40 minutes is huge and you will totally break 4 with the next one. Way to go girl! Can I come do it with you next year:) Hmmmmm sleep as much as possible, eat your favorite foods and enjoy the post-race high for as long as possible!

Reply

Thanks Janae! The crowd support in London was AMAZING! I prefer more scenic routes, but for cheering and motivation, the big city races win hands down! :) I might do the Park City half in August if you are planning to run that one?

Reply

Well done on the London marathon yesterday and on your massive PR! Want to join me for the Bristol to Bath next and try to get that sub 4h?

Reply

I would love to Laureen, but I was only over for the race, unfortunately! I’ve been trying to do London for years and finally made it!! :)

Reply

Fair enough, I thought that “island” in your nickname referred to Great Britain. This race is even more special then if you came to London just for it. Well done!!!

Reply

That water bottle is so smart! What a great idea! I always positive split in races. I don’t know how people can negative split! Usually by the end I’m just trying to hang on!

Reply

I usually am a negative split….but I think sometimes I start out too slow. I also haven’t raced further than a 15k though…
I know that I don’t drink enough water, especially since I lost my nalgene (I used the same time concept with that). I guess I have an excuse to buy a new bottle!!

Reply

Haha Brooke in the saucer cracks me up. And that water bottle is genius!!

xo

Reply

I love the water bottles! Definitely on my birthday wish list this year :)

Reply

I really don’t drink enough water … but I like to think that my fruit and vegie intake help to make up for it!

In our fridge we always have zucchini, capsicum, carrots, spinach or kale, brussel sprouts (when in season) and often corn cobs. I eat lots of avocado, peas and onion too.

I don’t think I’ve ever done a negative split in a race!! Ha! Something to aim for though :)

Reply

It’s my goal too to try to stretch in the morning and start my day with some hot water with lemon

Reply

After my morning coffee fix it’s water all day for me and I never leave home or even go to bed without a glass with me. I dehydrate very easily and have learned the hard way to ALWAYS stay hydrated.
My current favorite veggies are salad greens, brussel sprouts, broccoli, spinach, peppers, mushrooms, cabbage and any and all squash. I love avocados but don’t often buy them. I also love snap peas or red peppers with hummus. Yum Yum
My license plate on my car is (heart)SPNACH and I sport a snazzy popeye decal on my spare tire cover. :)

Reply

Hi Janae! I’ve been visiting your site daily since I’ve started running again and have learned so much from you. I also am eating more sweet potatoes than ever ;)
I finished my 2nd 10k yesterday (New PR!) and struggled with my phone app the whole time. Thinking of getting the Garmin Forerunner10 but not sure if its the right one for me? All I really want is something to tell me my average pace, current km pace, gps, and to set walk/run intervals. I can’t quite afford the 620 but if it was worth it i’d save for the 220. Any thoughts?

Reply

Coffee is made from water so I get my 64 ounces this way (I wish I was joking) lol!

Reply

I have never raced a negative split in my LIFE. I managed a 3:10 marathon but my first half was a 1:28. I run by feel and if my legs want to go then I let them and when they don’t want to go I make them. Whatever happens, happens (and it’s always a positive split).

Reply

I don’t drink nearly enough water. I drink a lot of decaffeinated beverages though (tea, coffee, etc.)

I’m a huge fan of asparagus, artichokes, mushrooms, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, salads/lettuce, brussel sprouts — just about anything but peas — and especially if someone else makes them for me.

I have pretty even splits or negative splits. The thing I heard harped on over and over by experienced runners was not to start out too fast. I think I might’ve taken it a little too much to heart, because I think I’m probably a bit paranoid now on going too fast. I’m usually passing lots of people at the end. (Which feels good, but then I wonder if I could’ve worked harder in the beginning/throughout).

Scale of 1-10. 1 being, I live in Nepal to 10 being I just won the lottery? Probably about a 7.

Reply

I definitely don’t drink enough water during the day. I really need to get in the habit of bringing water to class. I usually have celery, cucumbers, tomatoes and carrots in my fridge.

I’m a negative splitter – took me a long time to get used to it but now I run negatives all the time.

My day is starting to get crappy. Trying to plan a track practice at a special proper track for Thursday and trying to get my 3 year old picked up and taken care off is next to impossible :-( (In Ottawa our high school tracks are gravel and not the greatest – I take kids to 1 of 2 mondo tracks in the Ottawa area) – Max loves to run around and I can’t coach/chase him

Reply

I can get in all my water if I really concentrate on it, but if I’m busy I tend to forget…and then realize I haven’t gone to the bathroom in hours either.

I always have cucumbers…I eat them with anything…hummus, on sandwiches, ranch, in salads, etc.

I’m a big positive splitter…luckily no hugely outrageous positive splits, but I don’t think I’ve ever negative split a half and definitely have not a full. I almost thought I could for a few miles when I was feeling good during Boston, but that changed quickly.

Reply

I definitely don’t drink enough water. I know I should and I do try, but I HATE having to go to the bathroom every 20 minutes, therefore I never drink as much as I should. I eat sweet potatoes, broccoli, squash and mushrooms pretty regularly.

Reply

My work just started keeping fruit infused water in our cafeteria, so my intake has greatly increased! Yay for influences :)
Day is a nervous 10 – signed up for my first full marathon – bring on Detroit in October. You have inspired me!! But first I am running my 14th half in Green Bay with my 13 year old son who is running his first half. So excited!!

Reply

This winter was the first time I ever negative splitted a race! I think it was because my coach would give me specific paces to hit during different segments of the race and they were designed to help me negative split.

Reply

My day is a 7.
Nothing flashy just a 30 minute run, mall with the babe, and blt’s for dinner, but no complaints either.
I need one of those water things. Somethings never change and I would rather drink DMD then water any day.

Reply

I do usually drink enough water, but it is a conscious effort. I bring a water bottle to work and that usually seals the deal. I also try to drink water with supper to top things off (and because I try to avoid caffeine in the evenings so that I can sleep better). If I forget my water bottle at home then I usually don’t drink enough.

In terms of veggies, I usually eat the most spinach because it’s so easy to toss in a salad or smoothie. I actually like to keep frozen spinach in the freezer so I never have an excuse to not have some sort of vegetable in a smoothie. I almost always have tomatoes and cucumbers in the fridge as well, although it depends on the season.

Reply

Are positive splits not the goal? Man I am way off ;)

I drink a lot of water when I am at work – but at home I tend to forget or just drink coffee all day!

I am loving baby carrots, broccoli and cauliflower lately. Today for lunch I had chick peas with carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, a hard boiled egg and 1/2 an avo heated up a bit with balsamic on it – delicious!

Reply

I love the idea of packing ziploc bags to encourage healthy eating and prevent eating out! Gets expensive! Plus healthier!

Reply

I don’t know what it is, but over the past few weeks, I have NOT been getting enough water. I keep bottles on my desk and everything, but I’ve been terrible. I HAVE to get more, because I felt terrible on my run today :/

Reply

I just bought one! I’m terrible at drinking water throughout the day. Then at night, I’m downing it like there’s no tomoreow.!

Reply

I always have kale for smoothies! It’s hard to know what else to buy because they always seem to go bad before I can eat everything. Planting the garden soon so I can have tons of fresh veggies!

I am also a pro as positive splits :) going to try and not go out super fast at my race tomorrow so I can finish strong!

Reply

I’d love to get one of those cups! I just read your post for WRM and I also obsessively checked the weather for about a week leading up to the marathon. I lowered my expectations after a not so stellar winter of training and ended up with a PR at Boston! I was stoked and am still in disbelief. I was so happy to run into you on Boylston!! It really capped off my weekend. :) Thanks again for the photo!

Reply

I’m pretty good at getting in my water on work days, but I’m not very good on my days off. Too much running around getting things done I think.

I always have baby carrots, spinach and cucumbers on hand.

Reply

When I worked in an office I kept a GIANT water bottle on my desk and constantly seeing it helped remind me to drink it all. Now that I am at home I try and get up and drink a lot of water in the kitchen during random times in the day.

I just watched the Lego movie for the third time last night. It is so good. Have you seen it??

Your last sentence literally made me laugh out loud :)

My vegetables of choice: broccoli, kale, red peppers, mushrooms, carrots. I love eating them all together in a stir fry although nowadays, I try to eat my kale and broccoli raw. Check out this post on what veggies are better raw http://runwright.net/2015/03/13/the-great-raw-debate/

I love collecting water bottles, and I definitely think this one needs to be added to my collection.

I feel like I get a good amount of veggies. I eat a salad large enough to feed a bunny army almost every day for lunch and it is loaded with fruits and veggies.

And, my day was about a 5 today. I wasn’t feeling terribly well, so while the day itself was good my mood was just kind of blah.

Reply

Ok, I NEED one of those water bottles! I know I don’t get enough during the day.

I always have to have carrots in my fridge. I love eating them with hummus–it’s a perfect snack!

I tend to positive split on my races, unfortunately. In fact, I consider it a miracle anytime I happen to run a negative split race.

My day today was about a 6. I’m hoping tomorrow will be better and less stressful.

Reply

I use an app on my phone to keep track of the water I drink. The app is great. It does remind you throughout the day to drink but I turned that feature off. What I like is you can click a few buttons to indicate a sports day and/or a hot day outside, meaning you need to drink more and thus your daily amount goes up. Based on my weight, my regularly daily requirement is 85oz of water. Clicking on sports requires another 20oz and I think weather is another 15oz. I have been pretty good getting to at least 80oz a day but I sometimes miss on the 100+ oz days.

I have a 20oz water bottle with a charcoal filter that is with me at all times. I have a few rules that I live by. The most important being that I have to finish a full bottle before I can have my daily coffee. Needless to say that first bottle gets drank quickly so I can move on to coffee.

Reply

I think I do get enough water because I drink 4 water bottles at work (school), then I usually brink a couple more in the evening–plus coffee through out the day.

Veggies–Love radishes! lettuce, green onions, and peppers

So far I think my day is at an 8 because it is morning and everything has been fine so far… especially because Monday is over!

Reply

I actually typically negative split because I get faster as I go. However, I did a half last weekend and definitely positive split because the last 3 miles were trails/hills! Tempo workouts are not hard for me because it is what my body naturally does!

I actually drink too much water, but I figure it’s not the worst problem to have- despite always needing to use the bathroom!

My favorite veggies are carrots and this yogurt cucumber dill dip:)

Reply

Don’t beat yourself up over the positive splits! I think this is something every runner struggles with (or maybe I just tell myself that to make me feel better when I do it?! :)
I have been running for years and I always always always had positive splits in races…until I read about negative splits after completely ruining my first two marathons by going out WAY too fast. I realized though, that practicing negative splits takes time and rather than beat myself up, I try to practice it on certain days and other days I just don’t worry…I just embrace the fact that I am a healthy enough human being to get out and run :) It’ll come with time! You’re getting after it inch by inch Janae and you’re such an inspiration! That was a *Tough* marathon and you’re an incredible runner. And just think, there’s always next time ;)
Enjoy your recovery!

Reply

I’m usually really good about drinking water, but sometimes I’m not as steady as I would like to be. I’ll take a good chug every hour or so instead of small sips, which just makes me run to the bathroom more often!

Reply

That water bottle is super sweet idea. I need to drink more water especially at work. This would totally keep me on track!
Awesome article too! Thats so impressive to be in a MAGAZINE! You go girl!

Reply

That water idea is awesome! Definitely something that would help me out a ton! :)

Reply

I drink a lot of water throughout the day. I always have a container close by. I’m unusually thirsty but I’m healthy so it’s just the way I am.

I’ve been working on negative splits, I’m hoping this will translate to my next race.

We are vegetable fiends. I always have 3 types of greens, lettuce, carrots, mushrooms, squash (summer or winter – whatever is in season), broccoli, cabbage, tomatoes, cauliflower, beets and radishes on hand. I usually run out of salad greens every few days.

What a cool idea for the water bottle!
