My first skipped workout of this training cycle & 2 Boston things.

I left the house one time yesterday.

IMG 0274

My mom picked us up to get the one thing that actually sounded good to my sore throat and we ate it in the car.  Added bonus—>  I need all of the anti-oxidants that I can get.

IMG 8916

I had the Brazilian Acai Bowl (from Aubergine) and it was everything I could ask for.  I have a feeling that this is going to be a new expensive habit.

IMG 0272

When I first told Brooke that I wasn’t feeling well she rushed into her room to get her doctor stuff so that she could fix me.

IMG 8890

There was one other thing that sounded good and that was a big bowl of TJ’s Minestrone Soup.  This stuff always hits the spot.

IMG 0270

And just because.

IMG 0281

What I was supposed to do yesterday and what I most definitely did not do yesterday:

Screen Shot 2015 04 11 at 7 40 31 PM

The work for Boston has been done and at this point my biggest job is to get my body feeling better and strong and pushing myself when I am sick would do the opposite of that.   Missing one workout (I don’t want to make it up next week when it is so close to the race) in an entire training cycle is a-okay with me and especially when it is during the taper and I should be resting like a champ.

You know you have the best running friends when they bring you a drink and fritter because you missed the Saturday group run.  Thanks Rachelle!

IMG 0267

A few people have asked for my bib number to follow along so here it is:

IMG 0271

I have been studying this mile by mile elevation chart like crazy!  Mile 1 (-130 ft), 16 (-100 ft) & 22 (-80) are going to feel really good.

I also love the course comparison!  My goal is to hit up all five of these at some point.  Also, WOW… Chicago is a flat course!

IMG 8895

Special thanks to the Brooke for being okay with being lazy with me all day in bed and on the couch.  She is a trooper.

I ran Boston last year and will be running NY this year! I’d love to do Chicago maybe next fall.

Reply

Me too! Boston last year, NYC this year. :)

Reply

Chicago is awesome!! All the neighborhoods are so different, and of course, there’s so many spectators. I loved running on the road in places that we can’t otherwise :)

Reply

I’m going grocery shopping, running five miles and doing laundry. Such an exciting day! Maybe I’ll get over to the bookstore and buy the latest running magazines as well.
The acai bowl looked amazing!
Hope you feel better soon!

Reply

I’ve done all three of the Marathon Majors in the US. Chicago does have a really nice course! Only hill was right at the end!

I haven’t had an acai bowl but I always hear that they are amazing!

Hope you feel better and are back to 100% soon!

Reply

I’ve never had an acai bowl – not have I ever seen them in Ottawa. They intrigue me a bit.

I’ve run NYC – the elevation profile looks terrifying but it wasn’t that bad. Now, I ran slow on marathon day but I did run up all the big hills. I think the long stretch on 1st avenue was worse. The wind on the big bridge at the start was insane so it was more about just getting over the bridge and being done with it. I’ve never experienced a quieter start to a marathon – until we hit a sheltered part and someone yelled a swear word ;-)

Reply

I haven’t done any of those marathons, but I want to do all of them!!

Three things I’m doing today: Taking little man to the Children’s Museum, running :) and having a big family dinner.

Reply

-I would love to join you and do all 5! I haven’t run one yet, only half marathons. I can’t wait to run my first marathon! The plan is to run one after I graduate next year :)
-Three things to do today: long run, finish homework, go to Trader Joe’s!! YAY!!
-I love acai bowls! I’ve been on an acai bowl kick lately! I’ve tried them from locally owned places in Las Vegas (Juice n Go and Acai to the T). Next I’m going to try one from this place called Nekter juice bar. They are delicious!

Reply

I’m sorry you aren’t feeling well, but Brooke’s doctor skills look spot-on, so I think you’re in good hands!

Since I’ve only done races in Florida (hoping to change that this year-yay!) I have never looked at an elevation chart-hah! Flat.com But also humid and muggy and could rain but you never know and basically hot.

My 3 for the day: Possibly running here in a bit if I can get my butt out of this hammock… 5 miles?! Church if hubby feels better- sore throat for him too! And grocery shopping/food prep! The Sunday usuals around here :)

Reply

I ran Chicago last year and I’ll be running Nee York later this year!
Today: run, church, enjoy 80’s and sunshine!
I love acai bowls loaded with fruit. I hope it helped you feel better!

Reply

Hope you feel better real soon!

Reply

Three things today: Baking pumpkin cookies, visiting my Uncle in the hospital, annnnd TARGET! (save me)

Have a great day, Janae!

Reply

I’ve had an Acai bowl just once in LA and it was amazing! It needs to be cheaper though haha. My weekends always consist of work and study but I did do a lovely yoga sesh today! :)
Hope you are feeling heaps better soon and shake it off asap for Boston!

Reply

Chicago is great! I’ve run it 4 times and have never been disappointed. The course takes you through almost 20 different neighborhoods and the fan support is amazing!

Reply

Ive done boston, thats it on that list! Id love to do more.

Acai bowls ARE good, i just cant get myself to pay that much for not that big of a bowl.

Three things- work, run, and try to get through the day without crying too much. My cat was hit by a car last night and passed away, and im a pretty hot mess right now with very puffy eyes and a broken heart.

Reply

I am so sorry about your cat, Mary. That breaks my heart. Pets have such a special place in our hearts and will never be forgotten.

Reply

Thank you! It has been really hard, i keep searching around for him, and then remembering. :(

Reply

Oh sad day. I’m so sorry Mary. Love to you. :(

Reply

Thank you! It’s like losing a member of the family….

Reply

Oh Mary. I am truly so sorry about your cat, that breaks my heart. That is so hard.

Reply

thank you, yeah its been tough. we tried to stay out of the house yesterday as much as possible. being around the apartment is hard and each time come home i can’t help but tear up :(

Reply

Very sorry for your loss Mary:(

Reply

thank you! i appreciate it. the outpouring of love and support has been so helpful!

Reply

Oh, Mary, I’m so sorry!

Reply

Thank you, its been a rough weekend. at work today and my eyes are PUFFY. it’ll get easier though, over time…

Reply

The ache will dull but I know how hard it is while you’re going through it. Put some chilled cucumber slices on your eyes tonight, it does help.

Reply

So sorry about your kitty! Our fur babies hold a special place in our heart.

Reply

they really do! i mean, i know logically he’s “just” a cat, but man. he was family. a staple in our household.

Reply

I am sure taking a full rest day WILL help and WON’T hurt. I never think it hurts to rest especially considering how strong you are!

I haven’t had a acai bowl. I don’t even know where to get one around here.

Three things: bike ride (done), baking (coming up next), afternoon Nuggets game (can’t wait).

Happy Sunday!

Reply

Hope you feel better!

Reply

I entered the lottery for Chicago this year, so hopefully by the end of the year I will be able to say I have run Chicago. :) Today I am doing homework, going for a run, and hopefully going for a bike ride.

Reply

I’ve run Boston and will run New York this year! I can’t wait.

Never had an acai bowl… What are they like?

Today I’m watching the Masters, running 10-12 miles, and going out for seafood for lunch!!! It’s finally spring in Boston! Get well soon, Janae!

Reply

There’s a place in Back Bay area of Boston (a few blocks from the finish line) that I get acai bowls from all the time. So. GOOD. Its a hole in the wall in a train station called Jugos but it’s amazing. You should check it out when you’re in town. ; )

And I’ve ran NY which is amazing!

Reply

DELICIOUS… I will have to find it. Thanks for the recommendation!

Reply

Glad you are getting the rest you need. You’ve put in too much training and time to get sick now.

I would love to do any of the five marathons you mentioned. I’ve only done one in Atlanta, but would love to go to London to run a marathon.

Today I am going to the mall to buy some moisturizer from Aveda and cleanser from Sephora. I’m also taking a recovery day and just taking my dog for a walk, although she’ll try to take me for a run, and I’m cooking. It’s going to be a great day!

Ever had an acai bowl? What did you think? Where did you get it?

Reply

Feel better! Just think- at least it isn’t the stomach bug!!!

Reply

I will do Boston in 2016, though I will be there this year cheering my husband and YOU on!! I am doing Chicago in October and trying for a new PR and I am so excited! It’s a beautiful course and a beautiful city!

Hope you feel better soon!

Reply

I’ve only done Boston, and I honestly prefer running smaller races- my last marathon had only 2000 runners and it was awesome!

The acai bowl looks great. There’s a place in SLC that sells them for quite a bit less. I haven’t been there, but I need to go to the city creek center this week so maybe I’ll check it out.

Have a good weekend!

Reply

Be careful with your bib number. There were at least 3 runners last year that stole someone’s number, made copies and ran! Just looking out for you, girl!

My race plans have been squashed, for the moment, by a heart problem that presented itself while on a 5 mile run. I actually decided not to run a half this morning which was my first planned race since I had my daughter. Your Boston training makes me happy :). I hope you feel better quick!

Reply

AHHH no way! That is crazy. Thanks for the warning! I hope that you are doing okay Jenn and that your heart problem gets solved quickly. Have an amazing day with your daughter!

Reply

I did Berlin last year! Amazing experience! Working my way to a BQ, which is a lot closer than I ever imagined it would be. Definitely want to run NY and Chicago as well.

Reply

I’m so far away from running any of those, was supposed to start training for my first full this past spring but had to postpone it due to a hamstring injury. Maybe someday I’ll get to one of those.

Reply

I first had an Acai bowl when I was visiting Brazil and that has spoiled me for any more from the US. haha I sound like a huge snob. They are definitely delicious though.

I hope you feel better! It’s a good thing you are resting!

Reply

Feel better! I spent a day in bed last week too – resting is good for us right? By next week we will be fine. I have not done any of the other courses but having done a hilly course and a flat course a hilly course was much easier on my quads. Btw lobster launch shoes are sold out!

Reply

check marathonsports.com. It’s a running store in Boston. If they have them they will ship them for free. That’s where I bought mine last week & they are soooooo cute! I ordered them on Monday and I had them by Friday. You get the lobster net bag to keep them in too.

Reply

I ran Chicago. It was so much fun. A great marathon. Those Acai bowls. What are they and why are they so expensive?

Reply

I’ve made my own acai bowl before (we don’t have any places that sell them yet in Pittsburgh!). They’re really really good but so expensive. Ugh!

Today, I’m 1. resting (ran a 10k and 5k race yesterday), 2. cleaning (leaving for Europe in a week and my apartment is a disaster) and 3. spending lots of time outside :)

Reply

I hope you are feeling much better today! I do love a good acai bowl – I usually get them in the summer down by the beach, they have a food truck (and a store in the town) that makes them. So good and refreshing to eat for lunch at the beach!

Reply

Ooohh, feel better soon. LOTS of rest.
I’ve run New York and Berlin. I found New York very tough (probably because I didn’t train properly and was a crazy tourist for the 3 days before). Berlin was wonderful (my first marathon).
I’m running Prague in the Czech Republic in 3 weeks, so starting to get excited.
I also entered the Chicago lottery – would love to run Chicago. In fact I’d love to run London and Boston too but I’m waaayyyyyy to slow for Boston. Will be looking out for you on the big day.
Have a lovely relaxing day. Jacqueline

I’ve done Boston, New York and Chicago (I’m trying to run all 50 states). Chicago is flat, however, I had the unfortunate timing of running it the year it was 80+ degrees and humid at the start. I was able to finish before they cancelled the race but it remains my slowest time. While differences in course make a big difference, weather is huge! Would love to do London and Berlin but first I have another 32 states to run :)

Reply

All 50 states, you are amazing!!! I can’t even imagine running a marathon in that weather… wow. Keep me updated on the other 32 states!

Reply

I am getting ready to run 10 miles, giving my 4 chihuahuas a bath, and enjoying the beautiful weather.

That acai bowl looks amazing. I have had acai ice cream from Menchie’s…that has to count for something? :)!

I can’t wait to track you for Boston! I am wearing my Boston marathon t.shirt and Brooks lobster shoes to work that day. Rest up and I hope you start to feel better soon!

Reply

I have yet to run any of these courses, but would like to do Boston, NYC, and Chicago (which looks nice and flat). I’m guessing it is really easy to go out hard at Boston because of that elevation change – whoa! It’s almost like a free mile, haha!

Today I am running my first 10K pregnant. It’s definitely not a “race” for me, but will be an interesting experience running at a slower controlled pace in a race environment. I just want to go out, have fun, and enjoy myself.

Reply

Hope you feel better soon! I love that you were smart enough to stay home and rest instead of pushing through a run. Rest is key.

Reply

You forgot the Paris marathon (which by the way is today)!
danielle

Reply

We are in the same wave/corral :) good luck!! Be fearless !

Reply

I’m running Boston and NYC this year, London and Berlin next year followed by Tokyo and Chicago in 2017. Then back to Boston in 2018 (hopefully)

Reply

No acai bowl, looks awesome though. Haven’t done a marathon though. Finished my first half yesterday. Late starting due to not enough porta potties and then fell at water station at mile one because of wet mulch/Spanish moss. Banged up knee pretty badly but gutted it out and finished. Wasn’t gonna waste the training. So today, rest, laundry and Masters golf. Feel better!!

Reply

I hope you feel better today, Janae!

Today I ran 10 miles in 73:49, my fastest yet (and didn’t tweet you!) You have been such an inspiration and motivator! My body cannot handle 50 mile weeks anymore (no marathons for me), so I am doing about 30 miles and focusing on speed. Maybe 40 (in less than a month) is the new 25?!

We are also going to see our new house (it is being built and should be ready in 2 months.) They were working on bathroom tiles this week and I can’t wait to see them!

We might try and sneak down to see the cherry blossoms, but I’m not sure we want to deal with the crowds. Insanity.

If I could find an acai bowl I would devour it right now. Still sweaty and in my running clothes, so pretty.

Reply

I hope that you start feeling a little bit better today!!

I am running Chicago this year and I cannot wait! The course elevation looks perfect to me since I am used to training in super flat south florida :).

Reply

Hey, at least you can get this sickness out of the way before the actual race!!

I read the article in Women’s Running last month about the five marathons – I want to do them all too! Today I am making homemade pasta (for lasagna:), going to the store, and working on some posts! I have not had an acai bowl (no stores around here) but I have some powder and sometimes I make acai smoothies!

Reply

I’ve done Boston. New York looks like you spend the first mile jumping off a cliff! I’m buying spider traps today. I can’t believe how many spiders have popped up around here. I even dream about them. It’s all kinds of terrifying!

Reply

You need on guard essential oil ASAP! Work miracles! They also have on guard throat drops and pills. It is made by DoTerra.

Reply

I’m glad that you are not stressing about the skipped workout. You are so correct (and smart) in saying that the work to get you Boston ready is behind you. Missing this one workout will not have an impact on your race, I assure you…especially if your body needs the rest.

Of the ‘big 5’, I’ve only done Boston before and will be there again this year. I was supposed to run my first NY the year of ‘Superstorm Sandy’. It’s still on my list.

Love studying the elevation chart…have you seen this? It’s a written course overview with tips and hints for certain locations.

LOVED THIS!! Thank you Caroline… I watched the video too:) I hope you are having a great Sunday and thanks for your comment!

Reply

I love acai bowls! I wish somewhere in Omaha sold them!

Reply

Don’t forget that Tokyo is also one of the world marathon majors! Ran it this year and it was a fantastic race. So well organized and tons of crowd support!

Reply

Would LOVE to do all the majors! I ran Chicago twice. It’s a beautiful course and so much fun! Never needed my headphones. You should definitely do that one next.

Reply

This will be my third year doing Boston. I’ll be in Wave 2 Corral 2 right behind you!

Reply

Just heading out for my long run. I’ll be thinking about you! Hope you feel better very quickly!

Something you said in one of your recent posts inspired me to write this: http://www.myadventuresinliving.com/blog/do-you-have-runners-ocd about how OCD all of us runners can be.

Take care of yourself! (And I’m glad Brooke is taking good care of you too!)

Reply

I have been waking up with a sore throat for v the lady couple of days too! I also feel super tired. Can’t decide if it’s sickness or bad allergies.
Get better soon girl!

Reply

Hi J! Hope you feel better soon. So you can make acai bowls at home pretty easily. In fact, I just wrote about these Sambazon acai packs you get in the freezer section and mix in your blender with fruit and juices, then top with whatever you want (granola, nuts, you name it). Definitely cheaper than store-bought and just as good! :) (The product is in this post http://aladygoeswest.com/2015/04/10/friday-favorites-food-jewels-sweat-etc/)

Reply

I want to do Boston and Chicago! I loved Berlin when I visited there, so that would be a fun race.
Three things today: a hilly half marathon, brunch, and beers with family and friends!
Have a great Sunday!

Reply

Good idea to rest! You’ve put in all the hard work to get to this point. One missed workout won’t make a difference. I ran my first Boston last year. This year I’m doing NYC. I’ll think about Chicago next year. Check out my Boston recap if you’re interested: http://veganroadrunner.blogspot.com/2014/05/on-run-boston-marathon-2014.html

Reply

Chicago!! Best race ever. Super flat, fast, and insane crowd support.

Three things: 50 laps in the pool, quick trip to the dog park, and then flying to DC for a few days.

Hope you feel better soon! Load up on the Zinc! And the bright side of this … You’re sick during the taper instead of the heart of training or race day. Rest up and you’ll be ready to rock!

Reply

I ran a half this morning, now time to really taper for Boston. I ran Boston before and the hills were not as bad as I feared! Hope i am remembering that correctly!!! I would love to do Chicago! My favorite is MCM, which has a hill at mile 26 (the hill is surrounded my thousands of cheering fans). Off to my daughter’s soccer game, church, and a quick nap!

Reply

There’s actually SIX in the World Marathon Majors now! Tokoyo should also be on that list! Check out their website: https://www.worldmarathonmajors.com/

What I’m curious about is why Paris isn’t on it. I just don’t know enough about it know the answer!

Reply

There are 6 majors now (and have been for a few years!). I still need to do London and Tokyo. My order of preference based on those I’ve done so far: Boston, Berlin, New York, Chicago.

Reply

praying for a speedy recovery for you!

Today, I-
1. Ran a half marathon (my second)
2. Grocery shopped.
3. Ate ALL THE FOOD (or at least wanted to)

I’ve never had an acai bowl, but you’ve made me want one! Too bad I don’t have those in my area- I’ll have to settle for iced coffee instead :)

Reply

Hope you are feeling good better! I would love to do all five of those races. I was thinking g of signing up for Chicago this year but can’t afford the trip this year since I have to buy a house in SD. Maybe one day though :)

Reply

I was hoping to get some gardening done today, but it is too wet. I worked this morning, now getting ready to clean and probably Target this evening.

Janae,

How long will you be in Boston for?? I have read you blog 2x day religiously for the past 4 years and was so excited to see you were finally headed to Boston! Not sure if you are having any sort of meet-up in Boston, but after all these years of reading the blog it would be amazing to meet you!

:( Feel better soon!!! And, I am glad you have such a good little nurse/doctor to take care of you!!! Aren’t children so sweet?!?

I ran 6.24 miles with a local running group! Great run! Pushed me. These runners are usually much faster than me, but 2 had easy days due to taper and kind enough to hang with me! I think I like the group running instead of running solo! I think I am a social runner!

Take care! Feel Better!!! Rest up!! Saying a little prayer that you feel better soon!!!

Reply

That acai bowl looks amazing! I’ve never had one that looks like that, but it looks great! I had a drizzly 13 miler yesterday, it was pretty pleasant :)
Feel better janae!!!

Reply

Chicago looks delicious! I would love love love to do it!

Reply

I’ve only done Boston but NY and Chicago are somewhere on my bucket list! Feel better! Some soup should do the trick… and that apple fritter will definitely heal you up fast :)

3 Things Today: Church, Coffee, Rest.
I’m 32 weeks pregnant and am starting to feel quite pregnant these days… Now it’s toddler’s naptime and I’m reading blogs with my feet up on the couch. Yes, please!

Reply

I’ve done all 3 majors in the US. Boston is def the best! My husband and a few of my friends are in the same coral as you! My daughter (21mo) and I will be cheering for you and the others Monday! Can’t wait! The weather looks perfect for race day. I’m doing the Boston 5k Saturday. 70% rain. That should be fun.

3 things: watched my sister place 2nd in her age group for 10k. Laundry and then then need to start packing for Boston.

Brooke makes the perfect nurse. You’ll feel better in no time! Rest up!

Reply

It’s just part of taper madness, girl. You’ll feel better soon! I will absolutely join you for all of those marathons. I’ll probably finish like half hour behind you, but whatevs ;) Today, I’m working, working, and… working. Two more night shifts until my big Boston vacation, though!

Reply

I’ve done London twice, it’s much flatter than that profile suggests.

Reply

I have never had an acai bowl, but have heard great reviews about Aubergine and want to go check it out! :) I hope that you get feeling better soon! I am excited to follow you during the race :) You will do amazing!!!

Reply

That stinks you are sick! I ran my first half marathon race in 2 years this morning & got a 3 min PR with a time of 1:57! I was pumped. I also got to meet Deena Kastor & got a pic with her. She was telling my 5 yr old son about her daughter & her bday & it made my day. :)

I registered for the Chicago marathon lottery & should find out in about 2 weeks if I’m in!

Never had an Acai bowl but looks yummy!

Reply

I would love to do the London marathon! I’ve also just added Paris to the list, because why not?

I tried out Bikram yoga today…oof. That was a whole new level of intense!

Reply

Of those five, I’ve only run Boston. While reading this, I turned to my husband and asked why we hadn’t run the majors. I still don’t know why we never ran New York or Chicago…

Reply

P.S. Hope you feel better quickly!!! You’re exactly right about all of your work being behind you. Just consider yourself tapering extra thoroughly! :-)

Reply

I have never run a full-marathon and I never plan on it, but I just ran my first half marathon in Springfield IL and I plan on making a half marathon in Chicago IL my next race! :)

Reply

I ran NYC last fall (first marathon) and LOVED IT! The bridges are the only real “hills.” I qualified for Chicago and Boston at NYC so I’ll be running Chicago this fall, and Boston next spring- join me!!

Reply

Feel better soon!!!!

Reply

I live in England and I want my first marathon to be the London one, I think I’m still a few years away from achieving that but you can definitely join me then ;) Also I think the Chicago one looks so good, my dad lives there and whenever I visit I love running along the lake, it’s so beautiful!! Hope you’re feeling better!!

Reply

Love your blog! I have done Chicago 2x:) Have a great race in Boston!

Reply

Ran Boston last year and aiming to get NYC and Chicago in the next few years! Also watch out for mile 16 for Boston, the downhill is steeper than it appears!

Acai bowls sound incredible but haven’t had one!

Reply

I just wish Boston would have a 5k fun run or something.

We just had our very first acai bowl yesterday! We loved it, but then loved it a little less after we remembered it was $10 and we weren’t full. Brooke is the cutest little thing. I can’t believe how big she is getting!!!!!!!!!

Reply

I have done Chicago and let me tell you… it is SO AWESOME and you must do it!
From the crowds, to the amazing city and great course – loved it!
I will do the others with you!! :)
I really want to do Berlin sooner than later – great place to grab a PR and cool city.
Boston next year and NYC I won’t be running this year, but I will be there!!

I hope you feel better friend. Keep resting :)

Reply

So cute that Brooke went to get her Dr. kit.

Reply

Boston is going to be like a holiday for me!

Reply

I qualified for Boston in Chicago. It was a great course and the crowd was AMAZING! I loved every single second of it!

Reply

I’ve never done any of the marathons but they are on my bucket list. More importantly ……I have just done my first ever marathon!! Beyond happy in achieving this. Had so many obstacles to overcome to get to the start line.

AND!!! Today (13th in Australia) is my birthday and i turned 42 so i figured that i ran 1km for every year yesterday.

Still buzzing that i got to that finish line. Now I’m sitting at the airport getting ready to board for a 30hr trip for work. Let’s hope that i’ve walked and stretched enough so I don’t get off too sore.

Thanks for all your guidance, tips and enthusiasm about running. You have inspired me for so long!!!!

Reply

I tried to walk/run, no go. Back to the doc.

I love Acai and I make my own bowls. (I buy the unsweetened Acai in Whole Foods).

I went for a stroll along the water with my husband, ate BBQ and went grocery shopping. (the store was empty, happily).

Reply

i’ve done chicago 2x. hoping to qualify for boston next year. just not sure where I want to try to qualify.. maybe oregon? i want to travel for it. why not right?!

Reply

So proud of you for listening to your body and taking the day off! That’s a huge victory in itself :)

Reply

So glad you are studying the elevation mile by mile! That was the one major factor missing from my preparation for my second marathon that I ran yesterday. I figured since I live locally to the race, the terrain would be pretty much the same as the roads I trained on but there were two major hills near the end that I was not prepared for. I’m sure you will crush Boston now that you’ve got this race prep down to a science. Can’t wait to watch the race from home next week! Feel better soon!
