Would you rather—> Running Edition.

Two more things from yesterday’s long run.

1.  We found a heavenly drinking fountain at mile 16 of our long run.  I think because I run on the treadmill so often with my water bottle so close to me I have gotten used to drinking water throughout my entire run.  Finding this drinking fountain saved me.

IMG 7962

I loved Rachelle’s t-shirt with an angry runner bunny on the front and so I had to take a picture and post it.

I like to run when I am angry too.

IMG 7925

Brooke was in charge of choosing where to go to dinner last night.

I am guessing she learned to hug her favorite foods from her mom.

IMG 7974

Personally, I think that fries and salads go hand and hand.  And fries and barbecue sauce go even better together.  I consume large amounts of bbq sauce.

IMG 7978

We watched a little bit of Tigger and did the bed time thing.  About 30 minutes after I put her down she randomly started singing the clean-up song.  I just stood next to her door and listened for awhile.

IMG 7984

I am telling myself that I am going to get up early and do some cross-training.  Putting my bike to good use along with some weights.  Waking up early to run is a million times easier for me than waking up early to cross-train.

IMG 7983

As I am writing this I am just eating some good ol’ ice cream.  I am much too lazy to get out a bowl.

PS my coach just sent over next week’s workout.  Next Saturday should be fun:

Time to play a little WOULD YOU RATHER!!!!!  I would love to hear your answers to a few of them or all of them!

1.  Would you rather come across a snake or a rat while out for a run?  (I have come across both… that is why I am asking this one).

2.  Would you rather have to run for the next 6 months without a GPS watch or without your music?

3.  Would you rather have the first half of your run be uphill or the second half of your run be uphill?

4.  Would you rather run your next 5 miler without shoes or without a sports bra?  Okay, keep in mind I am writing this post way too late at night and so I am especially random.

5.  Would you rather explore a new area that you have never been to before for your next run or stick to your normal favorite running loop?

6.  Would you rather run in a strong headwind or …..  I actually can’t think of anything worse than running in a strong headwind so let’s just skip this one.

7.  Would you rather never have to stretch again after a run or never have to do core work again in order to stay injury free?

8.  Would you rather run with a blister on your foot or run with a side cramp?

9.  Would you rather get a brand new pair of running shoes for free or get a brand new running outfit for free?

10.  Would you rather do a huge race with spectators all along the course or do a small race without all of the extra stress of a big race?

I would run without shoes, get rid of the GPS watch (it annoys me!), I’d take the side cramp, small race, ditch the core work, explore a new area, hill in the beginning, and I guess I’d choose the rat over the snake! Skunks and turkeys are around me and really freak me out!

Salad with a side of sweet potato fries is my favorite combo!
Rat
Without music
First half uphill
Without shoes
New area
Never stretch again
Blister, but that one was tough
New shoes for free
Big race. I feed of the energy from the spectators!!!

I have come across rats while running before (thanks Baltimore city!) but I would be so freaked out if I saw a snake.
I don’t run with music when I run outside, so that’s way easier for me than running without a watch!
And I would rather get the uphill over with in the beginning:)

1. Snake. 2. Without music. 3. 1st half uphill.4. Without shoes. 5. normal loop 6. Hahah. 7. Never core work.. oh wait. Haha. I dont. 8. Blister on my foot. 9. Shoes for free.!! 10. Small race.

Oh I love this.!! My best friend and I used to always play this game. Haha. Is this what you guys do on your long run or are you just entertaining yourself late at night.? Lol

Definitely rat. Snakes are the worst.
I don’t mind running sans music, so that’s fine by me.
I’d rather go uphill first.
No shoes.
I love running in new places so that sounds pretty awesome
I don’t like stretching and Im really bad about doing it so I’d say that one!
Blisters on your feet are the worst. I can breathe thru a side cramp
New outfit, that can be more pricey than shoes!
I like races that fall in the middle. Not huge but not tiny.

8. Would you rather run with a blister on your foot or run with a side cramp?

Oh no…I don’t like either. maybe the. blister as I can change up my stride.

Reply

That would your rather game is so unpleasant I chose not to play. I have seen a snake-twice. Yesterday I ran in 90 degrees and I think I was hallucinating because I thought a blowing leaf was a snake and i jumped 3 feet in the air.

Reply

Rat. Snakes terrify me to no end.
Without music, as much as I love music, I love knowing my distance and pace more.
First half uphill
Without a sports bra
My normal loop
Ugh headwinds are the worst
Never have to stretch again
Run with a blister on my foot
Brand new running outfit since I hoard shoes once I spot my pair on sale
Small race. Small races are great!

1. Rat.
2. Without GPS! (this is brand new for me, so I wouldn’t miss it!)
3. First half of course ;)
4. Sports bra. Just layer up and wear some tight shirts!
5. New area always!!
6. Aww 6 is my favorite number…Happy Friday :)
7. Stretch. If I could just feel great after runs and not have to spend time stretching out, that would be great.
8. Side cramp! Done both way too many times and blister is WAY more painful.
9. Ohh this is a tough one…probably a really really expensive/nice outfit ;)
10. Hmmm I like both…but I’d have to say big race?? Idk!!

This was so fun!!

Reply

I would rather run a big race– I love the energy of all the spectators!

9. SHOES! I’m in desperate need of a new pair of Mizunos!

Reply

It’s so cute when kids randomly sing/talk to themselves!

I live in NYC, so rats are part of my morning commute. I think I’d rather see the occasional snake.

Reply

*rat
*w/o GPS
*the 1st half

*my usual route. Im not adventurous because I’m always worried about creepers.
*no more core work
*side cramp

*a big race with spectators cheering the runners on!

:) Fun! Happy Friday!

It’s funny because when I first moved to Texas I ran over a snake. It was literally one of the scariest moments of my life. Personally I run most of my miles without GPS so that’s not a big deal I guess.

Reply

1. Snake vs. rat: A rat! It probably won’t kill me.

2. No GPS vs. no music:
no GPS! I love my music too much.

3. First half of your run be uphill or the second half of your run be uphill?
First half! Then I can tell myself it’s all downhill from here.

4. No shoes or no sports bra:
Without shoes, for sure!

5. New area that you have never been to before for your next run or stick to your normal favorite running loop:
new area! Love running new places

7. Never have to stretch again after a run or never have to do core work again in order to stay injury free?
Never have to do core work! Stretching can be relaxing.

8. Would you rather run with a blister on your foot or run with a side cramp?
A side cramp! At least it goes away when you’re doing running.

I love would you rather games!

1. Both would creep me out, but rat.
2. Without a GPS
3. First half
4. Without shoes
5. Explore a new area
7. Stretch
8. Blister
9. Running shoes
10. Small race

Reply

1. snake – I would stop to investigate and he would probably hang around longer than the rat!
2. Music. I need to know how far I ran.
3. First half uphill for sure!
4. sports bra – it might not even be missed :(
5. explore new area
7. I’d to core work, I like to stretch
8. blister. Side cramps are my nemesis!
9. new outfit please! I have “other runner’s cool outfit” envy all the time!!
10. huge race – the crowds power you!

Reply

I eat that exact same meal from Chick-Fil-A on a regular basis :)

1. Rat. Snakes are terrifying
2. Music. My Garmin is my best friend
3. First half. Get it over with!
4. No shoes. I can’t fathom running without a sports bra. That would be…awkward.
5. Depends on my mood, but probably explore new area if I had time/motivation.
7. No stretching!
8. Side cramp. Blisters are wicked.
9. New shoes. Footwear = expensive.
10. Small race. No stress!

Reply

1. Rat – I hate rats and I like snakes, but rats are harmless.
2. Without music
3. First half uphill
4. Without sports bra, except if the track was soft and nice grass covered.
5. New area, if I am not alone.
6. Would you rather run in a strong headwind or (a heavy rain when its cold?) how about that? I would choose the wind.
7. Never stretch.
8. I would choose the blister. Yukk.
9. Outfit. I consume them rapidly.
10. Big race. All that fuss really motivates me.

Great blog! Thanks for posting i used to love doing online surveys on myspace haha remember myspace?

Janae – I was wondering if you are going to be doing some long runs later in the day to simulate the later start time of Boston? I don’t have a time zone change to deal with, but the later start time will be a big difference to me compared to my normal early AM running time. Just wondering if your coach recommended that too!

Reply

I would never want to run 6 months without music! I don’t even want to run one mile without music lol. I could easily give up the GPS in favor of music if I had to pick…I don’t want to see a snake or a rat. I can’t even decide which would be better.

Reply

1. A snake.. I love them!
2. Without music. Never use it anyway!
3. First half uphill
4. Probably no shoes
5. Explore a new area
6. I’d take a headwind over ice haha
7. Never have to stretch
8. Blister
9. New outfit!
10. Small race

Reply

1. One time I saw a snake and literally turned around and went back the way I had come (although it was longer) instead of finishing the loop because I refused to run past the snake. So it’s safe to say, I would definitely rather see a rat.
2. Without GPS watch because I don’t actually use one
3. Definitely first half
4. No sports bra. I am super flat chested, so sports bras (any kind of bra) are probably unnecessary haha.
5. Explore new!
6. There was a super strong headwind on the first half of my run yesterday. It. was. miserable.
7. No core work.
8. Blister
9. New shoes!
10. I love having lots of spectators!

Reply

I wouldn’t be worried about a rat or snake – sometimes people are scarier! I don’t run with music and don’t own a GPS but I do like a watch for time or I will use Mapmyrun on my phone. Definitely want to run the hills first, believe it or not I would go w/o the sports bra, I love running my same routes, hate headwinds, hate stretching, I can run with a blister, but side cramps kill me, love shoes and love huge races! This was a fun survey!!!! P.S. you are doing so well in your training I know good things are coming for Boston!!! Keep it up!

Reply

1. That’s hard. Probably a snake.
2. Without music. Love my Garmin :)
3. First half uphill.
4. No shoes!
5. I would be happy sticking to my normal loop! I’m so stuck in my habits.
6. Headwind>10 inches of snow
7. Never have to stretch!
8. Probably a blister
9. New shoes!
10. HUGE race with spectators :) I feed off the crowds!!!

1. Rat – it won’t bite me

4. Without a sports bra… I don’t reeeeally need one…
5. New area!
6. THE WORST
7. stretch
8. blister
9. shoes
10. BIG RACE! Chicago was the best :)

Rat (because I’m hoping it’ll just run away, and I nearly stepped on a snake once!)

Music – running just gives me time to think…about all kinds of stuff

First half uphill – just to get the hardest part done and focus on the finish (not the hills AND the finish!)

Sans shoes since I’m older and need the, er, support!

Hmmmm – I’m kind of a creature of habit (and not a confident runner yet), so I’d pick my familiar loop

Headwinds are pretty miserable…

Never do core – I really enjoy stretching!

I’ll take the blister, please.

Hmmmm – shoes.

I kind of like smaller races – I can focus and not worry about weaving, etc., which tires me.

Have a happy weekend, Janae!

Reply

I’d rather go Garmin free! I’m a much happier runner when I don’t see my pace. Also I swear I move backwards if I don’t have music blasting through my ears.

New running shoes>new outfit. Can’t ever have enough sneaks.

Side cramp>blister. Because I feel like cramps go away after a while where a blister would only get worse!

I’m going to go with running uphill the second half of a race…only because I did a race once (trail 5I) that started up hill and I was DONE after that. Holy heart rate. So if it’s the second half of the race at least I’m just trying to get to the end?

That was fun! Have a great Friday and enjoy your spin/lifting combo this a.m.!

Reply

#2: without music. also, i agree that salads and fries are a winning duo.

Reply

1. I’ve actually come across both too!! I still prefer the rat. Snakes scare me!
2. GPS watch – I do it a lot already just to enjoy running
3. First half be uphill. Then you know you have to come down at some point.
4. Oh my golly this one is hard….I would have to say shoes. Protecting the bust is a must.
5. Explore!
6. PREACH
7. Never stretch again. As much as I hate doing core work, I always feel proud of myself for doing it
8. Probably blister.
9. I think I’m going to be alone here and say running outfit. I can never justify getting a whole outfit more than I can justify getting new shoes :)
10. Huge with tons of energy!! I am in it for the funny signs

Reply

1. Rat. Rats are disgusting, but when we lived in the Black Hills we came across a rattle snake blocking our trail & were trapped. We turned around & came back 5 minutes later, but it still hadn’t moved!

Without my GPS, I love my music!!

Brooke is a cutie pie! And Chick fil A is delicious! Happy Friday!

Reply

1. I guess a rat because I came across them a lot when I lived in Chicago, so I’m somewhat used to seeing them. :-|
2. Definitely w/o music because I hardly ever listen to music while I’m running anyway.
3. First half! I feel like I’m going to die when I’m already getting tired and then I see a hill.
4. Hmm that’s a tough one. I guess without shoes if I get to choose the surface, like on sand. :)
5. Explore a new area! I love running while I’m traveling to see new things.
7. I actually enjoy core work, it makes me feel strong!
8. I guess a blister; I’m pretty wimpy when it comes to side cramps.
9. New shoes! I always want new running shoes.
10. For most distances, small races are more my cup of tea. Not sure if that would be true for a marathon though.

Reply

1. RAT – I hate snakes…
2. Without GPS… sometimes it’s nice not to track every number!
3. First half.
4. Without a bra. Less chance of injury, lol :)
5. Something new!!
7. Never stretch. I get bored stretching and it’s painful sometimes! I actually enjoy core work somehow
8. This one is hard… I’d have to say blister.
9. Shoes!!!!
10. I like small races so I can win my age group… is that bad!?

p.s. Chick fil a fries with Polynesian sauce is the greatest combo EVER.. you have to try it. I eat them way too often.

Reply

1. Oooo a rat I suppose; snakes (even dead ones) make my heart jump into my throat!

2. Considering I have never owned a GPS watch; I could totally go without one! I NEED my music however. :p

3. Hrmm I would like the first half up-hill.. Fresh legs and fresh lungs to help me up them!

4. I’m part of the itty-bitty-titty-committee so i’ll run without a sports bra!

5. I’d like a new route to explore! I’m tired of my loop-de-loop…

6. Skipped indeed!

7. Ohhh I’d say never have to stretch; it’s just boring to me after all of the endorphin’s!

8. Side cramps are very common in my running but I’m always able to push through to the end, so i’ll go with those!

9. Shoes shoes shoes! I’m pretty particular about my running outfits and I like the old worn-in ones the best!

10. Hmmm I guess I’d like to try a big race one day!

Reply

I’d much rather run without music…I never use it anyway…and definitely without shoes over a sports bra! Snakes and rats are ok (I’ve seen both), but I’d definitely rather not run into a moose or mountain lion while trail running! No strong opinions on the rest…have a great weekend!

Reply

#1. I want that bunny shirt!!!!! Where is it from?

#2 How can you stop on your long runs? If I stop for more than a traffic light, it is so hard to get going. All the aches and pains said “hey man, not cool.” Nothing hurts if I don’t stop. Until I’m done, that is…

Reply

No snakes! I’d much rather see a rat. I’ve been on the trails a lot lately and snakes are my biggest fear. I’d much rather give up the Garmin than music. I’ve been without my Garmin for almost a year now. It’s the most liberating feeling.

Reply

YOUR SALAD!!! I’m drooling!! I consume BBQ sauce like it’s going out of style! Love it.

1. I’ve never seen a rat, snakes I’m ok with, so I’ll say rat!
2. GPS
3. Second half so then I’m warmed up and less likely to quit ;)
4. I could run without a sports bra, I wasn’t very blessed in that area :)
5. I need my usual loop
6. LOL!!
7. Never have to stretch
8. Both suck, but I’ve toughed out many a blister, so I will say side cramp
9. SHOES!
10. Small race

Reply

1. Rat, 100%

2. Without music, I’ve become way too obsessed with tracking my progress, and I don’t really mind music-free.

3. First half uphill, no question.

4. Without shoes. I’m not even sure it’s possible to run without a sports bra.

5. Explore a new area as long as I knew I wouldn’t end up on like a highway with no sidewalk (this has basically happened to me and it was VERY STRESSFUL).

7. Never have to do core work. I”m terrible at getting that in.

8. Absolutely the hardest question. I think a side stitch? I haven’t had a blister in so long (KNOCK ON WOOD) but I don’t think I could handle it.

9. Brand new outfit!

10. Also a tough one. I think I like big races better. Though I’m just excited to race again after all mine were canceled this winter!

Reply

1. Rat (I’ve been bitten by a poisonous snake before, so I’d rather not go through that again!)
2. Without music
3. Run uphill the first half!
4. without a sports bra (I’ve got a small chest so I think I could handle it;)
5. Explore a new area
7. Never have to stretch again
8. Side cramp
9. Brand new running outfit for free!
10. Huge race with spectators

Reply

These are hilarious! Too bad I’m not a runner, or I’d be able to struggle with the answers a bit more. But I’d never go sports bra-less and up-hill is never fun. Happy Friday, J! Little Brookers just does the funnies things. :)

I would much rather see a mouse and have music! Have fun in Cali, I love weddings because I love dancing lol

I eat my ice cream out of the container all the time. I don’t say I’m lazy, I say I don’t have to clean the bowl afterwards ;-)

1. Snake – i actually like snakes
2.without music. I run without music most of the time
3. Uphill for the first half, although the half marathon I am training for is uphill for the last mile or so.
4. Without shoes. Ouch
5. New area. I live in a small town so I am out of new areas!
7. Never stretch again. I’m not a huge fan
8. Hmmm. I would probably rather have a side cramp. Blisters take longer to heal!
9. New outfit!
10. I have never done a big race so I’m not really sure. I think I would choose a smaller race.

Reply

Oh, I love this game! I’m only going to answer the first, though, because I’m lazy: I’d rather encounter rats, because I don’t worry that they might bite me. While I was living in DC, I would go out running early in the morning and often had to leap over rats that would suddenly skitter out from someone’s trash can or an alleyway and dash right under my feet. Great for my reflexes. Not great for my nerves!

Reply

1. rat, snakes just stay in the middle and expect you to jump over them. I’ve actually ended my run after less than a mile because there was a snake across the path
2. no GPS
3. second, I feel like I have more control of my body going uphill
4. without shoes?
5. I like my running loop, I like knowing what to expect. New places make miles feel longer
6. ok
7. no stretching, I’m not a fan, although I do love yoga
8. side cramp
9. running shoes, they’re so expensive for just one item that you’ll have to replace soon
10. I like the crowd

Reply

1. Rat for sure. I would expect a rat to run from me more so than a snake.
2. This one is tough! Maybe my music as long as I had someone to chat with.
3. I would definitely rather the first half to be uphill.
4. Without a sports bra.
5. Explore somewhere new!
7. Core
8. blister
9. Both! I actually get a lot shoes from a shoe tester friend, so I guess a free outfit.
10. Lots of spectators!

without a GPS watch AND without music! #ZenRunner

#9 is the hardest question I’ve been asked all week.
NEW RACE DAY OUTFIT because new outfits make it go faster. Its science.

Brook is so stinkin’ cute!!!
1. I actually like snakes, so I’d say a snake.
2. No GPS? Fine by me.
3. I like hills in training, but not at the end of a race… get them over with, I say!
4. I’m a bit buxom, so I’ll leave the shoes at home.
5. I’m always looking for new places to run… unless I don’t have my garmin, in which case I’d stick to the same loop.
6. Headwind = Gross
7. This one is hard. I core work because sometimes I hate it. Stretching always feels good.
8. I’ve dealt with both simultaneously, so I’m gonna say blister. I’m very sensitive to pain in my abdominal area. Feet, I can ignore.
9. Shoes! I don’t really care as much about my outfits.
10. Small race, but not because of stress — I feel like if spectator support is rare, it’s even better when it comes.

That was fun!! :)

That 14 mile tempo run for next Saturday is in the bag. You’ll have no problem with it! I bet you could do the middle 10 miles at 6:45 min pace. Okay and I’ll answer one of the questions… I’ve never owned a Garmin! It’s only been in the last year that I’ve timed myself on regular runs. Otherwise it’s only been at races. And I ran my first marathon 20 years ago, and I’ve run a zillion of them since, including Boston. I have always felt like I’d get obsessive about the numbers.

Reply

YIKES a 6:52 marathon goal pace is so fast!!!! That tempo run would make me nervous too!!!!
I would SCREAM and run for my life if I saw either a rat or a snake. I would rather go without music.
Uphill first half
Without a sports bra…(I’m small chested :))
Explore :)
Never have to do core
Side cramp
Please don’t make me choose! I want them both!!!!
I like medium races…kinda big but not like Boston or Chicago big and NOT small. I did a really small flat trail marathon and although it was pretty I did not like it. Running by yourself through the woods for mile 21-26 of a marathon just flat out stinks!!!!!

Reply

1. Would you rather come across a snake or a rat while out for a run? (I have come across both… that is why I am asking this one).

1. Rat
2. Music
3. first half of your run be uphill
4. without a sports bra. (Not much in the chest department!!)
5. Explore a new area!
7. Never stretch again
8. Blister
9. I have too much of both….
10. HUGE race. :) #Boston

FUN FUN!!
1. I’d rather come across a rat. I’m a New Yorker. I’m used to them LOL!
2. I’d run without music way before my GPS watch.
3. I’d rather the hill be up front in the first half
4. I couldn’t run 5 feet without a sports bra or i’d give myself a black eye. LOL!
5. I’d always explore new area vs normal route
6. HAHA! YES-WIND is the WORST!
7. No more core work would make me happy
8. I’d rather run with a side cramp
9. I’d rather get the outfit for free. For some reason i can spend a lot on sneakers but not clothes.
10. Tie! I love both.

Reply

1. Rat – although when I live in Chicago one ran over my foot one day when I was running and it was terrifying.
2. GPS. Music makes me happy :)
3. Second half. I LOVE Boston’s course. I’m running Big Sur next month (pray for me) and that’s hills in the first and second and everything in between. Over and over.
4. Sports bra
5. New area, although I do love my regular routes.
6. My mom and I institued “wind points” long ago. Basically you get more credit for your run if it’s windy. It helps to justify extra ice cream, etc. :)
7. Stretch. No patience for it!
8. Side cramp! You can run through that. Blisters, they just keep getting uglier.
9. Running shoes
10. Big race. I love Chicago, Boston and NYC. Small marathons are awesome too, but big marathons feel extra special.

Hi, Janae! I’m running a half marathon tomorrow (my 3rd), and I was wondering if you could point me in the direction of some posts you’ve written about pre-race nutrition. I want to focus more on what to eat the day before (which is today) because I have a sensitive stomach and don’t want to worry about any digestion issues tomorrow. There is a ton of conflicting information out there, so I just wanted to see if you had any advice! Thank you!

Snake (as long as it is not venomous…….I actually saved a king snake and rat snake from being run over by bicycles on the path)
GPS watch…I don’t have one!
first part uphill
no sports bra
run a new area
the wind sucks
core work
blister, although that would be awful
free shoes, hello! They wear out quicker than clothes!
a small race………they are so much more fun because you are not tripping over people while running and you don’t get lost at the finish line trying to find your people!

1. Rat. I have also seen both and neither is pleasant but at least I know the rat isn’t poisonous.
2. Music. I am a data addict so being without my watch would be a struggle and I’m usually a podcast listener anyway (maybe I’m cheating in saying this doesn’t count as music?)
3. First half, hands down. Get the hills over with!
4. Shoes. I like barefoot running!
5. New area!
6. The only thing I can imagine potentially worse than a headwind would be freezing rain.
7. Core work. I like both but I actually LOVE stretching.
8. Blister
9. Shoes all the way
10. I like big races! The energy gives me such a great adrenaline boost.

I enjoy this game.

Rat, I think the real question is could I still have Chuck?, first half uphill (I actually prefer that), no sports bra…probably wouldn’t even notice a difference, never stretch (can that include foam rolling too? Please? I am actually foam rolling now…), blisters, outfit, big race if it is a marathon, small race for every other distance.

Yes I love would you rather!

1. Rat for sure. Snakes are so scary.
2. Without music! I love knowing my splits.
3. First half uphill! Downhill for the second half is the best.
4. Wow that’s a tough one. Maybe without a bra?
5. New area!
6. HA!
7. Core work!
8. Blister!
9. Shoes!
10. Hmmm that’s a toss up. I love the quiet serenity for the first half but for the second half I need something/someone to pump me up!

1) Rat for sure- snakes scare me more than anything.
2) GPS Watch
3) First Half
4) Haha! I’m going to pretend it’s on the beach and say shoes!
5) New area!
6) agreed
7) stretch
8) cramp
9) outfit!
10) That’s hard…. I’ve done both and I think bigger gives me more motivation!

1. Definitely the rat! 2. without music, I love my GPS, it is quite addicting!! 3. First half uphill, I tend to burn myself out if the first half is downhill. 4. Without a sports bra, my feet are not that tough. 5. Run in a new area, I like variety! 6. skip 7. Not have to do core work which I would hope would mean that I wouldn’t have any injuries. That is what I have been dealing with this past year. 8. Side cramp 9. Nice expensive out fit. 10. Small races are my favorite!! I love your blog!!

Hahaha definitely without shoes. Hello beach running! And I’m a big fan of exploring new places by running. I’m always driving to new parks, neighborhoods, trails to explore new terrain.

Reply

1. Definitely a rat – they are friendlier.
2. Without a watch! Although that’s a tough one.
3. Hmm second so I’m warmed up.
4. Uhhhh…without a sports bra. Unless I was running on the beach or something.
5. Stick to my normal loop.
6. Hahaha. Maybe vs no wind but SUPER hot or something?
7. Never stretch. I hate stretching.
8. Oh my. Probably side cramp because I have learned how to run through them and make them go away.
9. SHOES!
10. HUGE RACE because the spectators really are the best part!

Reply

1. Rat. Most definitely a rat. I might get a heart attack and die if I ran across a snake.
2. Without music! I almost never run with music :)
3. First half uphill!
4. OH DEAR! I say sports bra because I could just hold em up ;) I’m not sure what I’d do with my poor feet.
5. Explore a new area!
6. LOL
7. Never have to stretch again! Lol idk why I hate this so much??? I actually love core work.
8. Side cramp probably.
9. Running shoes IF they were the perfect pair (or I could keep exchanging until I found the perfect pair).
10. Small race.

In regards to your last post: most entertaining thing about my last run was catching up with my oldest friend!

1. Snake – I live in Alberta, Canada and we do not have rats (http://www1.agric.gov.ab.ca/$department/deptdocs.nsf/all/agdex3441), so I would be HIGHLY suspicious if I came across a rat.

2. Without music! Easy – I have never run WITH music :)

3. First half uphill

4. Honestly, I think without shoes.

5. New area!

6. Booo, headwinds

7. Never have to stretch again

8. Side cramp

9. Outfit!!

10. Small race!

10. I’m a big race kind of girl! I just feed off of all of that energy and support that a lot of spectators bring!

I LOVE CFA salads! The market salad with the strawberries is my favorite!

Reply

I actually came across a snake on a bike ride this fall. I was on the greenway and stopped for a rest when I realized there was a snake coiled up just a few feet away from me. I was scared and didn’t know what to do, so I just stood there for a few minutes. Then I got out of there as fast as I could. I definitely would have preferred to come across a rat or mouse!

Reply

OOOOH that chick fila salad looks so good!!! Gah everything they have is just so amazing.

Reply

A rat. (snakes aren’t predictable and pose more of a threat)

Without GPS. (Gotta have my music!)

1st Half (Good way to use the extra energy early in the race)

Without a bra. (One is uncomfortable, one will be painful. I’ll go with uncomfortable:)

New area (I always love it, it’s just getting the nerve to run somewhere different on your own. Gotta scout it out. Too bad woment have to be so careful.)

Would you rather run in a strong headwind or ….. backwards on a treadmill???!!! A. headwind

Corework. (I like to stretch. Corework requires me to play mind games with myself (holding plank for time etc))

Side cramp

Shoes! (I feel a little guilty when I spend so much on shoes. I tend to buy my clothes a little cheaper and they last a long time)

Huge race. (I just feel faster running with other people. I feel like it’s easier to lose focus of the fact that I’m racing when there are larger distances between runners. And the spectators make a huge difference too! )

I love would you rather!

1. I’d say snake, but I would get a PR time running away from either!
2. I’d rather run without the GPS watch. I only got mine last year, so I’m used it. But don’t mess with my music!
3. I’d rather have the first half of my run be uphill, because then I could look forward to the downhill instead of dreading the uphill.
4. I’d rather run without shoes. I’m “well-endowed” and running without a sports bra would physically hurt and I’d have back issues ;P
5. I’d rather stick to my normal route, but I want to change that. I need to embrace new things :)
6. I would rather not run into a headwind. Obviously. However, it does help me not be sweaty and gross!
7. I’d rather never do core work. Because I don’t anyway. Oops
8. I’d rather run with a side cramp. Blister could ruin my shoes and that would make me :(
9. I’d rather get a new running outfit. I love it when I happen to look cute running (not very often does that happen). But I wouldnt’ say no to shoes either!
10. I’d always rather do a big race. I think it stems from coming in last place at a cross country meet once, but I always need someone behind me! A smaller race scares me.

Reply

Definitely the rat… I’d take the hill in the beginning, no music but keep my Garmin, skip the sports bra but keep the shoes, and definitely free shoes over an outfit! Awesome job on your 22 miler, good luck with the next long run! It’s so fun reading about your Boston training.

1. Rat. One time when I was biking, I ran a snake over and for some reason, I’ve been scarred ever since. Like, I can’t even look at snakes any more…ew!
2. Without music. I ran without any electronics the other night and it was very refreshing to not have the music. I felt lost and confused without the GPS and my mile splits :)
3. First half. Get over them as soon as possible.
4. No bra. The girls are fairly small so I think I could handle the pain of extra bouncing much better compared to the pain of stepping on stones and such.
5. New area. It keeps boredom at bay.
6. Lots of headwind on my run yesterday…I wanted to cry.
7. No core. I find stretching very relaxing.
8. Side cramp. They usually go away eventually. That blister is going to stick around.
9. Shoes. One can never have too many fun colored running shoes!
10. Huge race. I don’t like to be center of attention so at a huge race I can just get lost in the mix.

This was fun, and I really enjoyed reading everyone else’s responses!

I would definitely run without my watch – I don’t use it obsessively at all, I just like to know how far I go. Which could easily be measured online and then mapped out! I would also most definitely love me some running shoes. I tend to wear the same things over & over again but If I do that with shoes for too long I get injured. Nooooo thank you. :)

What a fun idea!
1. Rat
2. Music – I have to know my miles!
3. first 1/2 uphill
4. sports bra
5. new place
6. So true– headwinds are no bueno!
7. Stretch. I am horrible about stretching but I can make myself do core work.
8. Blister
9. Outfit, I can justify new shoes but not “cute” running clothes.
10. Small race

I would rather run the first half of the long run uphill. No other options for me!

I would be ok seeing a rat but snakes just horrify me! The way they slither along is just so wrong…they need legs.

I always run with music!

First half uphill and I would love to explore a new route….with new shoes!

I love small races. This was so fun reading everyones responses! :D

1. A rat, the way snakes slither gives me the creeps!!
2. Definitely w/o a GPS watch, I NEED my music for motivation
3. This ones tough but I think I would rather have the 2nd half be uphill.
4. I guess I’d take my next 5 miler w/o shoes, maybe running along the beach or something!
5. Definitely would rather explore a new area than do the same route
6. Headwinds blow! pun intended ;)
7. Never stretch again, it takes everything in me to sit & stretch after any workout
8. I’d rather run with a blister, those side cramps are killer for me
9. Brand new outfit for sure! 2 new things is greater than one :)
10. Huge race. I feel like the spectators give me motivation & the adrenaline rush you get before the first steps across the start line of a big race is indescribable!

Rat. Defiantly. I’ve seen garden snakes on runs and they freak me out!

Without a GPS since I don’t use one anyway.

Second half uphill…just makes me tougher and I’m already warmed up.

Without a sports bra…sadly….I don’t need one anyway…LOL

Run my same routine…I’m a creature of habit.

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH HEADWINDS. I actually start to curse out loud sometimes when they re particularly strong.

Stretch. That’s what yoga class is for. I NEVER stretch on my own. Boring!

Blister. Side cramps slow me down like I’m running through peanut butter.

A new pair of shoes for free. I hate buying shoes because they are just a necessity. Buying a new outfit is always fun!
I
Can i say a medium sized race??? I love the excitement and electricity of a large race…but not the masses of people!

These questions are awesome!

1) snake. (I’ve also come across both. The snake was more predictable.)
2) music. (I’m assuming I still get to run with my friends, because if not, GPS)
3) first half (so I don’t have to have the dread of knowing it’s coming – just get it over with!)
4) sports bra (this was probably the hardest. ultimately, my feet are too sensitive to go without shoes and without a bra, I would just have to go with a really awkward arm across chest to hold everything together lurching sort of technique, but I think I could finish).
5) explore a new area. Definitely.
6) You’re right. There’s nothing worse.
7) Stretching. I hate stretching. It feels so futile.
8) Blister? (This one really depends on the degree of each. I’ve never had either one really badly so maybe I’m not qualified to answer this one).
9) Outfit (while I wear really expensive running shoes, I know exactly what I would get. There’s an element of surprise in a new outfit).
10) Small (I love trail races and community races.)

2. I never run with music, so I’ll say that so I can keep my watch ;)

5. Exploring makes the time go by faster
7. Stretch. I already dont and Im prob going to break apart.

I like sticking to the tried and true, so same running loop
No core work! I LOVE stretching :)
blister all the way! I have had both and blisters are much more manageable
new pair of running shoes :)

Those little moments, when the kids are in their own world, it’s almost when you learn the most about them. They were always my favorite times. So sweet and innocent.

1. snake. I don’t mind them. Mostly.
2. GPS. I love my iPod. Madly.
3. first half…who has energy for the second half?
4. sports bra. I would break an ankle.
5. totally the loop. I love it. Also, I’m directionally challenged.
6. I’d stay home. And have cake.
7. never stretch. Least fun thing ever. Except for the headwind.
8. side cramp. blisters are the worst. Except for the headwind.
9. shoes. Totally shoes.

3. First half uphill. I want to get that hill out of the way.
4. Without shoes.
5. New area. It makes the run go by much faster.
6. Not a headwind. I ran a 5k in wind gusts of 30mph. not cool
7. Never stretch. I just want to lay down when I am done running.
8. Blister. I can focus on something else to forget the pain.
9. Brand new shoes.
10. Small race. I love the quiet and closeness of a small race. Then you get to the crowd at the final chute to the finish and it is so worth it.

Rat (I’m terrified of snakes)

Without Music

First half uphill

Without a sports bra (tough choice though!)

New area!

When I lived in Iowa it was SO windy! but the wind was better than rain+ wind together :)

I’m pretty bad about both but I’d rather ditch core work

New Outfit!

Big race – especially if it’s a marathon. I need the support at the end!

1. Rat. Although can we just change the answer to “cute bunny rabbit”? Although I did see a muskrat during a trail run once
2. I don’t even use a GPS so that’s easy.
3. Definitely start off uphill. My usual running route has a slight incline right near the end and it kills me every time.
4. Another member of the IBTC here so I could handle no bra way better than no shoes.
5. If the new area is a warm beach I’m all in!
The rest of the questions are too hard, I’m just gonna stay on my imaginary beach :-)

1. Snake – Rats really freak me out
2. Music – I am just learning to pace myself, and I know if I want to do triathlons I need to learn to run without music
3. Second half –I may be more tired, but I hate uphills at the start of a run
4. Ouch on both – Bra I guess – I used to never wear either! (not to run!) Running without shoes would cause more longterm damage.
5. I spent 2 years running in the same place, and I am learning to explore new areas, but not on long runs yet. I stick to what I know for now.
7. Core work – I don’t mind stretching after I run. I find it soothing.
8. Blister – I know I can remedy that. I haven’t figured out how to get rid of a side stitch without stopping running.
9. Running outfit – A whole outfit is more $ than sneakers (for me).

10. Would you rather do a huge race with spectators all along the course or do a small race without all of the extra stress of a big race?

My second comment on your blog today but I think you’ll appreciate this — it’s a beautiful day in Denver so I decided to walk across the street for an iced green tea to enjoy the weather. Well, wouldn’t you know the coffee shop sells apple fritters. My thought process: “Hungry Runner Girl loves apple fritters. I should be more like her so I’ll order one.” It was my first and certainly not last apple fritter! Here’s hoping it fuels my long run tomorrow! :)

2. I’d run without music. Must know how far I’ve gone.
3. First half hilly, of course.
4. No sports bra. I basically wear one because I like to *think* it’s doing something. But really, there ain’t much there!
5. Stick to favorite running loop. Can’t risk a hilly/unpleasant run!
6. Headwind makes me feel badass, but yes I hate it so much.
7. I almost never stretch after a run and haven’t gotten injured (at least from running), so…definitely the stretching thing. I know, it’s ridiculous.
8. Side cramp! blisters are awful and never feel better as the run progresses.
9. Running shoes, to feed my running shoe addiction…

1. I would definitely rather come across a rat! (I live in AZ and came across a rattlesnake once and it was terrifying!!)
2. I would choose no GPS. I love running with music (especially when doing sprints or a long run) it just helps pass the time. (And with GPS, I’m just constantly looking at it, trying to figure out how much further I have to go)
3. I think I would rather have hills in the first half just to get them out of the way, but I don’t know. Because then you’d be tired the rest of the race. And if they were in the second half, you would still feel good the first half…. hard question! ;)
4. Definitely without a sports bra! My feet are such babies and it take me 5 minutes to walk across an asphalt street because it hurts so I go super slow! haha!!
5. I am totally a creature of habit, but I absolutely LOVE new running paths (especially in new cities!!)
7. I don’t do either so…I’m just gonna skip over this one real quick. ;)
8. Side cramp for sure! Blisters are the worse.
9. I think I would choose a new running outfit just for fun.
10. Big race! I love doing super big (crowded) races- I think all the energy pumps me up. I did RNR Las Vegas and it was such an awesome run because there were people lining the course the whole time and I never felt like I was alone. There was literally always someone cheering us on.

4. W/O sports bra – unless it is on the beach then w/o shoes

1. Rat. Rats are gross, but snakes are potentially dangerous.
2. Without GPS. I do almost all of my runs without GPS, since I like using running to relax, and I get too caught up in pace when I’m wearing a GPS watch.
3. Unpopular opinion, but I’d rather the second half be uphill. I like the beginning of my runs to be easy so that I can ease into them.
4. Sports bra. I don’t really need a sports bra anyway :)
5. New area, unless I’m in a rush
6. Haha, agreed
7. Core work. Although I think core work is MUCH more effective (in improving performance and preventing injury) than stretching.

I pretty much needed to show this to you ASAP. http://running.competitor.com/2015/03/shoes-and-gear/a-jogging-stroller-unlike-any-youve-seen_124554

I’m suffering from incredible IT band pain these days, and with physical therapy it doesn’t seem to be getting any better. I’m starting to worry, “Will I ever run more than a 5k again?”

I love reading your blog and when I saw the stroller above I remembered your IT band pain from pushing a stroller and running. The above is a nice solution, no? Although, I will say that this stroller doesn’t seem like a smooth ride for the kid.

I hope you and Brook are doing awesome. Happy Spring from Seattle!

4. Honestly, I think I would rather not run.

I love this post! Only runners understand the true importance of these questions :)
1. Rat. Snakes have fangs, no thank you!
2. No music. I rarely run with music, my earbuds fall out and it bugs me.
3. First half. I like to get the hard stuff over with first!
4. Without a sports bra. I’m a boy so I’m cheating on this one :)
5. I would rather run in a new area. Running in new places is an adventure!
6. Headwind is the worst!!
7. Never have to stretch again. I’m so bad about stretching, but I do love me some core work!
8. I’d rather deal with the blister. Cramps suck.
9. New shoes!
10. I gotta say, I love big races! The Rock n Roll events are great. The energy with all of the runners everywhere is like none other!! Also, you get spoiled at the race expo and finish line. What’s not to love about that??

1. I think a rat because they are more likely to run away faster.
2. Without GPS. At least I can kind of guess how far and fast I’m going based on songs. But if I had to see my pace/mileage without listening to music, that sounds like torture.
3. Second half, I need the first half to warm up!
4. Without a sports bra, I barely have boobs anyway haha
5. Explore! I always try to do my long runs in new places. It keep my entertained to have new scenery. However I do get a little anxiety about possible road blocks in the middle of the route I mapped out if I’ve never seen the area before.
6. A strong headwind is the worst!
7. Never have to do core work! I stretch every single time I run no matter what because I think it feels glorious, it’s never a chore for me. However, core work on the other hand…yuck!
8. A side cramp because the chances of the side cramp being there for your next run is slim, whereas the blister will probably definitely still be there.
9. Shoes! I buy new running clothes all the time because I’m a clearance stalker, but I have wide feet so my shoes are never cheap.
10. Big race! The bigger the race, the more encouraged I feel by all the people on and off the course :)

1. Rat! I’ve encountered a snake stretched out across the entire width of the path. It took me a good ten minutes to gather enough courage to jump over it. (There was water on either side.)
2. Without GPS. I gots to have my music.
3. Uphill
4. Without shoes
5. Stick to my normal favorite running loop…I know the mileage.
7. never have to do core work again
8. Blister…I’ve had quarter size blisters at mile 9 of 13.1 race. I should have popped them and slapped second skin on them. So I learned. Side cramps…I have no idea how to get rid of those.
9. Outfit fo sho
10.I don’t mind both…it’s a toss up. Prolly lean toward a small race.
