Cooking Dates—> talk about bonding!

Getting a Blue Apron delivery is cause for celebration at our house.

A box delivered right to your doorstep full of perfectly portioned, farm-fresh ingredients to use for new and exciting recipes is kind of the best thing ever.  The only thing better would be if I got a new pair of running shoes delivered on the same day…  I would probably pass out from excitement.

PS it is delivered in a refrigerated box in case you aren’t home when it arrives.

I always go for the 2-Person Plan but you can also order the Family Plan.  The Family Plan is perfect for a family of 4 (or for a family with 3 or 4 younger kids eating smaller portions).

For this delivery I wanted to create some memories in the kitchen.

I decided that this would be the perfect time for 3 date nights with my 9 year old niece.  We could spend time together in the kitchen, learn new skills, have some great conversations and of course, eat amazing food.  She was stoked when I asked her to join me!

The first night we prepared Crispy Chicken Thighs with Braised Lettuce, Kimchi & Maitake Mushrooms.  The meal took us about 35 minutes to make together and she was so extremely proud of herself when we sat down to eat the finished product!

This is what I love about Blue Apron—>  each meal that I make is extremely creative and so different from any of the previous Blue Apron meals I have made.  It has been so fun to try new things that I normally would never think of making in the past.  They are always adding new meals and recipes to their menu each week!

This dish reminded me of how much I love Kimchi and crispy chicken thighs are always a good thing.

For our second niece/aunt date night in the kitchen we made Lamb & Beef Sharma with Creamy Radish Salad!  I love how bright and fresh all of the ingredients are and I really love that I don’t have to go to the store to get them.

DSC 1588

My niece loved cooking with ingredients that she has never used before (or even eaten, like lamb!) before and learning all about what was going into each meal.

I could eat this dish over and over again.

And last but not least, Tilapia Meuniere with Moroccan-Spiced Lentils & Rainbow Chard!

Each menu card includes an easy to follow step-by step guide along with plenty of pictures.  My niece loved sitting down with the recipes before each meal and reading over them together before we got to work.

We seasoned the tilapia with salt and pepper and then breadcrumbs and cooked them in olive oil.

The addition of capers to the sauce in this dish added a ton of extra flavor.

I am writing this post 4 days after making this dish and I am drooling over the pictures because I want to eat it again right this second.

I keep hearing about Blue Apron and I live in one of the areas they don’t deliver to yet! How fun for you and your niece!

St. Louis is about as close as it comes to Topeka. It’s bad enough driving into KC for Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s.

I’ve never heard of blue apron before. That’s interesting. It seems like it’s easy. I’m glad it’s working for you Janae!

We got the same 3 meals in our last order! That tilapia was awesome, wasn’t it? I was skeptical about the lentil salad, but it was amazing!! I typically wouldn’t go near lamb either, but it was really good. When we started Blue Apron (I get the meals for 2 every other week) I vowed to try anything… I’ve been pretty happy so far!

Seriously… the tilapia was crazy good! Glad you are having such a great experience too! Have an amazing day Jillian!

You too! Happy Friday!

I don’t like any of those recipes. I need the Pioneer Woman version of Blue Apron. More practical food would be better

You might be surprised… I’ve been getting Blue Apron every other week for about six weeks and have really enjoyed things I wouldn’t expect and certainly wouldn’t have bought at the grocery store!

So cute that you had a neice date! How fun!! :) this looks like a nice easy healthy way to cook. I love capers! Maybe because they are salty to me and I love salty stuff esp after a run! :)

Those meals look so good, and it’s awesome how easy Blue Apron makes it to cook them! I already look forward to someday cooking with my future children and future nieces.

What an adorable aunt/niece date! I am starting to feel more comfortable in the kitchen, and trying new things all the time. I’m hoping to instill healthy cooking with my future children one day!

Ahh, look at all these great products not available to Canadians! I’m moving to the states one day, haha.

Blue apron looks like a great place to get people out of their food comfort zone :) Plus the extra time with your niece is such a nice idea. I grew up and had a really close relationship with my aunt, it was a huge part of my childhood :)

I just wanted to comment to give some good feedback about Blue Apron! My mom gave my husband and I a subscription for 3 meals for Christmas, and our box showed up a date late, which meant that some of the ingredients weren’t as fresh as they could have been. And, since I’m an idiot, I didn’t know that I had to cancel my subscription after the week was up, so I realized the next week that I was receiving a second box and that they had charged me for it (which was totally my mistake)! When I emailed the company about it, they were SUPER nice and told me that they would credit back my money for the 2nd box, especially since my first box arrived a day late. So, we ended up getting a second week for free! They definitely didn’t have to do that, and I really appreciated them being so understanding – it really showed that they value their customers!

That is awesome Susie! Thanks for your comment! They really are such a great company to work with!

I think it’s awesome how involved you are with your niece. I can’t say any of my aunts were that way with me. She’s adorable too!

Reply

That looks amazing! I love trying new recipes!

I just have to say I think this is the best sponsored post I’ve seen in a long time on any blog. I love the way you took the opportunity to really have fun with the product and included your niece! As the mom of an 8 year old watching her engage made me consider the product for me and my kiddo.

Reply

Thanks so much Kristen! I really appreciate your comment:) Give your a big 8 year old a hug for me and Brookers!

We’re eating Blue Apron this week and loving our meals so far! Unfortunately, Lucas isn’t quite ready to be able to assist me in cooking ;)

Reply

Give him a few more months and he will be. PS why haven’t we met yet? I’m just not okay with that.

Reply

Ummm, seriously. Let’s get on that, like, super soon, mmmmmkay???? :)

As an impatient midwesterner, I have to call shenanigans on the idea that the map is 80% blue. Isn’t Texas like 10% of the population alone?

Reply

That is so cute! I bet she LOVED that and felt so special!

Reply

I love this! My niece is 14 months and I can’t wait until we get to have cooking dates! Guess I’ll have to wait a few years ;)

Reply

I LOVE Blue Apron. I just wrote about it again yesterday because I think it is the best. I also had the same meals that you did and they were all delicious. I always feel like such a masterful chef when I create something from them. The other days I microwave a sweet potato and put a veggie patty on it. Masterful.

Reply

I’m so sad. Blue Apron is not available to Kansas – yet.

Reply

It’s sweet that you invited your niece over for a cooking session :)

The Tilapia and lentils look awesome!! :)

I have been wanting to try Blue Apron for months now and am so happy I was able to use the discount from your blog post! Very excited to try it out! Thanks, Janae!

I still haven’t tried Blue Apron and need to. Those sharmas look delish! :)

Reply

I’m so impressed that your niece ate all of those fancy/healthy/exotic meals!! Love love the idea of your cooking dates. No wonder your niece is so great with all the amazing female role models in your fam!!

Reply

Excellent post! I’ve been thinking about trying Blue Apron for a few months, and you (and your discount offer) won me over. Thanks!

Reply

Thanks so much for posting about this again Janae, I have been thinking about giving it a try. Do you think the 2-person option is enough food for 2 adults if this is the main meal for the day? Only asking because my husband is 6’7” and his portion sizes are definitely larger than average. Thanks!

Reply

Hey Amy! That is a great question! Hmmmm…. I eat A LOT of food and the meals were the perfect size for me (not too stuffed but definitely not still hungry). Maybe you could supplement a little more for him on the side:)

Reply

I love that you had your niece over for these dinners! How fun :)

Reply

Wow deliciousness!! I’m really trying to make an effort to give my kids more of a variety of foods….your neice is so adorable! What a blessing you are to her.

Reply

What a great way to introduce kids to cooking and new foods. You are a wonderful aunty!

Reply

My girls LOVE to help in the kitchen and then when we sit down to dinner they always make sure to make a point to say exactly what they made and they always ask everyone if they like it. It’s great! That food looks delish!!!

Reply

Way to go Aunt Janae! When I lived stateside I used to go to DreamDinners (an on site montly meal prep place) and my kids loved to go on parent/kid night! I truly believe people will try more foods when taking part in the preparation.

The other day someone put an Irish hat full of skittles in the staff lounge. I think if you walked into that you’d be in candy delight!

Reply

Yum! That all looks so good, but I think I’m most interested in the lamb & beef sharma!

Reply

The food looks yummy! And your adorable niece looks so much like you! You can tell your mutual adoration for each other is so genuine and sweet. My question for you is where your adorable pants are from in that first picture (getting your delivery by the door)? I believe I remember you saying your sweatshirt is from the gap (bc I was thinking of buying it- it’s so cute). Are the pants from gap too? Thanks, Janae!

HEY!! The pants are from gap too! here is the link:
