I am really bad at math when I am running.

A mountain selfie that did not exactly turn out how I was hoping it would.

I debated leading up to my run over whether or not I should wear a coat.  I decided to wear it and then at approximately 1.4 miles into our run I was really hot.  I buried it (it is my favorite coat and I couldn’t risk it being stolen) under a bunch of leaves on the side of the trail and grabbed it on the way back to our cars towards the end.  I just can’t handle wearing a lot of layers unless it is freezing out.

We did the 15 miles @ a 7:56 average pace.   7:56 has been my long run pace the last few weeks.  It is weird.

5 of the middle miles at up-tempo pace of 7:04 average.   Felt pretty strong for the first 4 but that last one was tough.

Josse and I had a good discussion about how hard math is towards the end of your run when you start getting really tired.  When I am running it takes me about 4 times as long as normal to solve a simple math problem (i.e. how far we still need to go, pace stuff etc).  When I am on the treadmill I am pretty good at figuring out all of the math of my run/pace but outside it takes me a bit.  Also, weird.   Anyone else?  This especially happens towards the end of a marathon, I just don’t even try to figure out all of the numbers and I just run.

Brooke has been looking forward to the local carousel all week and we finally made it over there.

We also had quite an intense game of bowling.

Strike.  I was so proud.

Get ready for your heart to absolutely melt.  My good friend Paige just got the sweetest puppy you will ever meet.  I just want to take him home.  Somebody convince my landlord to allow pets.  Please.

Part 1 of dinner:  Turkey, avocado and feta (hiding under the turkey burger) salad.  Part 2 of dinner:  The rest of Brooke’s pot of Annie’s mac & cheese.

I am a sucker for buying any candy that has the word NEW on it.  I feel like it is my responsibility to do a review on the blog.   My thoughts—>  The purple bag of skittles is still by far the best but the peach flavor in the Orchards bag is REALLY good.

Happy Super Bowl Sunday!  I am going all out this year and bringing a veggie tray.  Really overdoing it:)

That puppy is adorable!
I’ll watch the Super Bowl, but I’m not really cheering for a team.
I’m making balsamic glazed cauliflower “wings.”
I had a great long run and then spent a relaxing day with my husband:)

Reply

I don’t really care much about the game or who wins. I’ll watch it but more for the commercials. I think we are just watching it at home this year so I don’t know that I’ll make anything special for it.

I took a nap yesterday and it was pretty glorious. I had to work at 5 yesterday morning so a nap was in order when I got off.

That is the cutest puppy! Just show your landlord that photo- how can anyone resist?

Reply

Haha that selfie looks exactly like all of mine. I’m the worst at photos which is probably why I’ll never be a professional blogger I guess. Ha

Anyways yesterday I think I ate everything imaginable. I don’t think I had anything bad to eat.

Reply

I really don’t even know if we’ll be watching the Super Bowl. How lame is that?

Best part of my Saturday: a long trail walk scoping out the routes for when I can run again. This torn hip flexor is really killing me :(

Reply

What a cute puppy!!
My husband and I probably aren’t watching the SuperBowl. We’ll probably binge-watch all the commercials on Hulu or youtube instead. We’re snowed in today so we really can’t go anywhere to watch the game.
Yesterday I went for a shake-out run with my husband (I ran long on Friday) and then we baked homemade pita bread and watched movies! I love lazy Saturdays! :)

Reply

I am mainly watching the superbowl for the ads and halftime show but if I had to pick a team then it would be the Seahawks. I am thinking about making baked potatoes and chili (We are watching the game at home).

I have such a hard time with math when running too! I remember last year I was running a marathon and trying to break 4 hours and for the last few miles I kept trying to calculate how close I was but it was pretty much impossible. Especially since my watch splits were off. I ended up finishing in 4:01 and was so frustrated!
Yesterdays run felt good but the wind was ridiculous! And it felt like 5 degrees out so that’s never good. Best thing I ate yesterday was two breakfasts…first one right after my run and then instead of a typical lunch I made more eggs, bacon and veggies to eat.
I’ll be watching some of the Superbowl but I’m not really cheering for anyone.

I live 3 blocks from the stadium in Phoenix. It’s going to be crazy here today. They have “special” security in our subdivision. He was sleeping yesterday when I came through the gate. I feel very safe. I’m not rooting for anyone. I’m a Packer fan and still grumbling over the Seattle loss, but I will be watching the half time show and making red pepper no bean hummus for my friends. Have a great day!

Reply

Any type of deliberate thought is tough for me during a long run and I agree math is near impossible!

Reply

Funny thing seeing you guys bowl. I actually work as a cook and cashier at a bowing alley!

Reply

That puppy is so cute! I hope Brooke gets to play with him a lot!

We are going to a friend’s house for the Super Bowl. I love football, but my team is not playing, so I don’t care who wins. My daughter picked out a football cake at Whole Foods to bring to the party. I am probably making my chocolate chip cookies, they are the best and always expected at a party!

I am terrible at math when running! I always use my calculator on the treadmill in case during my cool down I need to run another 1/4 mile! Outside I just run what I can!

Ok, time to stop procrastinating and go for my long run. Happy Sunday!

Reply

My Saturday was perfect. Rasberry French toast followed by a day of skiing in Vermont and a party melt and sweet potato fries and some hard cider for dinner. This morning we are going snow mobiling and then back home to get our doggies and watch the super bowl. Perfect weekend getaway!!

Reply

I’ve been resting a sore leg since Tuesday, and 5 miles on it felt okay yesterday! It felt good to run however I’m really looking forward to getting off of the treadmill.
I suppose I’m rooting for the Seahawks tonight since my team (the Ravens) aren’t playing. I’m bring beer cheese dip to the party!

Reply

I will admit to sometimes using the calculator in my phone to calculate out my average pace when I am on the treadmill lol.

Reply

I’m watching the Super Bowl today…and by that I mean watching the commercials!

Reply

Go patriots! ( by default…my husband’s team)

I’ve seen these stadium set-up trays to make for game day snacks and I’m seriously considering giving it a go. Thankfully my parents who are throwing the party are only expecting us to provide the beer

Best part of my Saturday = Harry potter world at universal with my parents and in-laws ! (The mix always makes me nervous but thankfully everyone got along) ;)

Enjoy your Sunday Janae! You will rock dat veggie tray!

Reply

Well, the Eagles are out and both of the teams have won so it’s pretty much about food and commercials this year. Haha! Buffalo chicken dip is definitely the best football food. Even though I am vegetarian now, I still remember its deliciousness. BLUE CHEESE! Standing up. Same with potty shots (basketball).

Reply

I need those Skittles!
We have a blizzard warning in Chicagoland today so we are stuck home watching the Superbowl! We’re making fajitas and s’mores bars!!

Reply

Oddly enough during a run is when my math skills seem to improve! I guess because I have nothing to distract me and I can just concentrate on figuring out what I need to do to hit the finish time I want. I usually start making calculations when I’m roughly 3 miles from the end of a long run/race (except the 5K haha) so I have a while to double check my math :)

Reply

That’s a fab tactic run! I was hoping I would be able to get my long run down as low as you did but the winds were 32 miles an hour…how insane is that?!? It was also -16 out. OMG. So cold.
Even though our hometown team is on-I think we are just staying home and making some yummy food! Plus we are supposed to get another 1-2 feet of snow today, so YIKES.

Reply

We will watch the Super Bowl at home and root for the Patriots (hubby and I both went to Michigan as did Tom Brady!) I don’t really care about the game but like the commercials and an excuse to make yummy snacks :)

Great job on the long run!

Reply

The veggie tray is my favorite thing at the superbowl :) It’s nice to have something healthy to munch on! I got a little carried away baking for the superbowl…my favorite apple cake and raspberry cupcakes with chocolate frosting. I’m also making a salad and my husband is making buffalo chicken meatballs.

I also get really bad at math on long runs.. I spend miles thinking about where I can turn around to get home at the right mileage, and constantly change my mind. My run yesterday felt great- its been so nice in SLC. I went to Hatch Family Chocolate afterwards for a brownie sunday- SO good!

Awesome time on your long run!

Reply

Best part of Saturday. New run store was offering free race entry fees for buying a new pair of shoes. I got a new pair shoes and am doing a 20k this spring. Yeah!

Reply

Your long run pace is fast that the fastsest pace of my progression run yesterday – you’re so speedy! I am not planning on watching the Super Bowl, just the weather…so much snow coming our way again :(

Reply

I run from my house and weave in and out of the neighborhoods of East SLC. I don’t know how I do it but I can miss and turn and mess up my run so easily on the long runs. I basically run the same way each time and I can still miss a turn. Then I have to do math to figure out how to finish my run with the right miles. Probably because our brains are too busy trying to figure out why we are doing it.
Nothing fancy for Superbowl. My son offered to watch it with me so we are having hamburgers and chips and queso. Yeah buddy!

Reply

Skittles – appropriate to talk about on Super Bowl Sunday with the Seahawks playing – that beast mode loves the skittles!

I am so bad at math while running too. Recently I overshot the out portion by an entire mile because I couldn’t devide by two an odd number, which meant by the time I got back home I ran an extra two miles. Brilliant.

Reply

I’m watching the men’s championship match for the Australian Open right now!! And the Superbowl later. I’m rooting for the Seahawks.

The best parts of Saturday (I have several) …doing a relay 5K on a team of 11 for a dear friend and Wolfson Children’s Hospital in Jacksonville, FL, taking a nap in the afternoon (I never take naps) and finding Poppycock at Harris Teeter- my local grocery store on Amelia Island. This stuff is so good!!

Reply

I ran my first treadmill half marathon on Saturday
Took my puppy to the dog park
Went to Binny’s with my mom for some wine tasting/stocking up before the blizzard hit

It was a lovely day :)

Reply

I want a puppy!!! Still trying to convince my husband that we need (yes, need) a Golden Retriever puppy.

I’ve got to try those new Skittles. We eat Skittles every week when we watch our Seahawks in honor of Beast Mode. That being said, YES we are watching the Super Bowl today and will cheer on our Seahawks!!! I am so excited for this game. Ahhhh!

My husband is making baked chicken wings, meatballs in the crockpot, and guacamole and chips.

Reply

I’m going to watch the Super Bowl, though I still haven’t decided what team I want to win. I tend to dislike both teams equally. My boyfriend hates the Patriots, so I may have to suppress my dislike of the Seahawks for a day.

We’re having chips and guac which is really all I need. Plus we’re having burgers for dinner which is pretty much my favorite food – plus sweet potato fries. :)

Saturday was a rest day for me, today is long run day – hopefully – I had really good pizza for dinner last night. Hooray weekend food!

Reply

I’m going to my friends house! She’s having a little gathering. And she bought 20lbs of wings! Wahoo! Can’t wait to eat! I will be rooting for the patriots bc they are soooo close to my.. East coast love

Reply

Awesome run, girl! I think I’m cheering for the Patriots?? Going to eat some guac for sure and making sweet potato fries! And then butternut squash chili for dinner :) Have a great day!!

Reply

Aww the puppy!! And I agree, doing simple math while I’m doing any kind of hard run is 1ox harder for some reason.

Reply

I’m going to a party today and am bringing a big box of store-bought cookies and beer. A real domestic maven, you know? :) Hope you have a happy Sunday!

Reply

My run yesterday was great, and today I got in a bike ride before the sun rose! I’m not planning anything for the Superbowl tonight (except me watching at home) because we’re supposed to get a big winter storm!

Reply

I was supposed to go to a Super Bowl party tonight and now I’m worried I can’t because of our stupid weather!

Reply

Seahawks! I’m a Steelers fan but my sister is die hard Seahawks so we’ll root for the good guys :)
On Pinterest now looking for some healthy superbowl snacks.
I’m terrible at math when running too I’ve always said that. Going out to run in the Ohio blizzard coming through and sled riding with my son before the game.
Got a Super Bowl workout planned too :)

Reply

Watching the superbowl but cheering for the food and friends. I can take football or leave it. Had a great hilly run today, then went to church. I did fall though and somehow got road rash on my shoulder through 2 layers of clothes. Whoops! No aches or pains though. Making buffalo wing popcorn (caramel popcorn with hot sauce and cayenne pepper and butter YUM!) And potato skins. Best part of yesterday was getting off work early and spending time with my family.

Reply

I’m terrible at maths at the best of times, let alone when I’m running! :) haha I should try Brooke’s bowling style it looks like it worked for her :) I’m watching my first Super Bowl today! Exciting but bittersweet as it is my last night with my man before we are 8000 miles apart again :s The best part of my Saturday was a lovely hike in the North Vancouver mountains :) have a lovely Sunday!

Reply

I got a couple different dips when I was the farmer’s market for the game today. I decided on roasted red pepper hummus, tzatiki, and bacon cream cheese dips. I tested the bacon one already and it’s delicious.

Reply

It’s so funny that you should mention the challenge of doing math while running. I was just thinking about that the other day. Based on all of the comments, I guess it’s pretty normal!

Reply

Glad someone else has the same math issue – I am bad at math whenever I am exercising. And I am a CPA! Once a week I take a precision run treadmill class and we have to add and subtract from various baseline paces. I am always goofing up. I’ve taken classes from this instructor for a few years, and am glad he never asks what I do for a living- ha!
We are in the middle of a big snowstorm here – pleasantly surprised to see so many people in yoga class this morning. And appreciative of all the instructors that had to brave their way to the gym today – I only had a 3 block walk.
I am looking forward to watching the superbowl halftime show and eating pizza tonight. More excited about the pizza – yum!

Reply

Math towards the end of a long run is pretty much impossible for me. I chalk it up to a low blood sugar state…my brain is not allowed very much fuel as my muscles are stealing whatever is left!

I love the pic of Brooke bowling….intensely watching that ball roll, sprawled out on her tummy, so cute!

Reply

I love maths during my runs, it takes my mind off the hard miles sometimes…

Reply

Oh god I feel you, my mind just doesn’t work towards the end of my runs – too high on endorphins!

Reply

You need a puppy! I do, too. I have major puppy fever.

Reply

We are literally snowed in over here…well kinda, we have 2 vehicles with 4wd so we have already been out in it. We have about 5 inches so far and its still snowing.
We are watching the super bowl but due to the weather our company cannot make it over. We’re picking up some pizza at Little Caesars and eating munchies. I will not be tracking food today. We’re cheering for the Seahawks, I feel like they are the underdogs, and we always root for the underdogs unless the Packers are playing, then we always root for the Pack!
Good job Brooke on the strike!!!

Reply

We were suppose to go to a super bowl party but the midwest got hit with a ton of snow. So planning on watching the game with a bowl of soup, corn bread and the veggie tray I was going to bring.

SEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA…………….HAWKS!!!!!!!!!! Bring it home again, boys!!!!! :) Happy Sunday to you and your family!

Reply

I have to admit I complained during my entire 5.5 miles yesterday – but it’s done and I’m glad I went! Lucky to have a great group of accountability partners!

Reply

And GO ‘Hawks! (I guess, since my Colts lost!)

Reply

Chili is my super bowl contribution!!
I always do math in my head when running – I can tell when I’m near exhaustion or starting to dehydrate when I can’t figure anything out:)

Reply

Totally random, but I love that color combo of the questions!

We had a fish fry and fettuccine alfredo with all the regular party food. The puppy is ADORABLE! Did you see the commercial with the lost puppy and the horses for Budweiser?! I died. So cute.

Reply

It’s so funny you say that about doing math; I use math as my test to make sure I’m not going to pass out. At the end of a long run, I make sure I can do simple subtraction and addition. The only time I haven’t been able to, I started to faint about 30 seconds later!

Reply

I’m not too bad with math (#engineer) but there’s something about doing math while running that really makes the entire running experience feel so much tougher. I think I just prefer to let my mind wander while running because the moment I try to focus on something I start struggling!

Reply

Blue Apron for dinner during the game.

Well timed post. I was just thinking about “runners math” during my long run yesterday and I saw the new Skittles at the store and was very curious.

Reply

I seriously thought this was just me, I have the hardest time figuring out how many miles I have to go when I run outside! One time I was worried I was having a stroke, but then it came to me. I think my brain hides the real amount from me so I won’t give up… that’s my reason and I’m sticking to it.

Reply

My favorite part of my Saturday was my run! It was an easy 8 miles in the perfect weather. I had the best sushi ever for dinner and a delicious ice cream sundae for dessert!

Reply

This weekend I went XC skiing for 2 hours on Sat/Sun. It was fun, but just not the same as running (however my hiney is so sore! yeah!)

Superbowl was at 0230 here so I did not watch.

If I were to have watched I would have wanted a big, yummy homemade sandwich on a baguette. That just sounds good.

…..now I want a sandwich.

Reply

Yep, the blood flow seems to shy away from the brain during those long runs. I once stumbled upon a kleenex floating in a puddle at around the 18 mile mark and my first reaction was that it was a jellyfish.

Reply

I am all about the puppy cuteness! I melt! Love the pic of Brooke laying down watching the ball roll. Adorable!

Reply

I had a perfect long run on Sunday…..after a fail on Saturday, so I just really needed to mention it, :)

Reply

Ok, I can’t wait to try peach Skittles! Thank you!!

I wish I could have done a long run this weekend. My distance has gone down so much, thanks to the horrid plantar fasciitis. I want to get rid of this torture!

Reply

Sweet puppy!
We watched the Super Bowl and were rooting for the Seahawks.
Fun game and just fun family time.
Made a really yummy guacamole :)

Still working through my injury and still cross training :)

Reply

Yes and yes on the purple skittles! They have my heart! ;)

What do you do to be sure about your safety during your running? I live in South Carolina.

Reply

I was rooting for the Hawks. We were SOOOO close! Ahhhh!

What an adorable puppy!

I always love New or Limited Edition foods too!

Reply

OMG. Math is absolutely IMPOSSIBLE near the end of a run for me too!! LOL
