Rather be underdressed, a proud moment and leg length inequality.

I found some deer footprints while out on my run today.

8.25 miles @ 7:58 average pace.  It was pretty cold out but I chose to wear a vest instead of a running jacket.  I would rather be underdressed and be a little cold while I am running than overdressed and hot.  This does not apply to my hands though—>  the hotter my hands are the better.

Bless my mom’s heart.

I just couldn’t do another treadmill run this morning and I needed to be outside so she hung out with the Brookers while I hit the road.  When I came home they were hiding in the corner waiting for me to get home so they could jump out and scare me.  Good thing Brooke’s giggling gave them away.

IMG 3958

Then Brooke got to work on her Rachmaninoff piece.   PS do you see the painting?  My dad is quite the artist!

Rewind to first thing this morning:

Every waiting room should include massage chairs.

Back to seeing Dr. Bennett (Utah people, I highly recommend him and I am not just saying that… he has helped me a ton and here is his number in case you want it —>801-513-1078)!

My body doesn’t love marathon training and so he is going to be a big help during this training cycle to make sure I get to the starting line of Boston injury free and strong.

My right leg is always the leg that gives me problems—> The reason why= Leg Length Inequality (LLI).  This can be caused because of structural reasons (like the picture below… a difference in the bones and anatomy from side to side) or because of functional reasons (the pelvis is held twisted by the muscles or a jammed joint).

Functional LLI is very common for runners (especially for women that have had kids)!  Running on one side of the road all of the time when there is a slant in the road is a huge cause for this problem too.  This has been the cause of most of my injuries over the years—>  I can even start to tell when my left leg is a little longer than my right.  My right hip has been letting me know that it is there over the last few days (I call this a hot spot—> not an injury but something to pay attention to) but a simple unjamming of the joint this morning by Dr. B and my body felt perfect on my run right after.

“Leg length asymmetries appear to be the third most common cause of running injuries and occur in 60-90% of the population.” Source and more about it here too.

IMG 3973

The normal lunch cooking going on.  Sweet potato in the very back and in case you were wondering… Yes, the 1-2 sweet potatoes that I eat each day are in fact turning my skin orange.  Worth it.

A proud mothering moment occurred when Brooke asked for MORE broccoli after she finished her first plate.  It warmed my heart that was still pretty cold from running outside.

I lift, foam roll, get astym, lots of fun stuff to help with running:)
I’m biased but my pups are the best!! However, they have no special talents other than lots of snuggling!

Reply

That is the best talent of all. Let me borrow them for a few days please:)

How often do you get astym? Have you noticed a huge difference?

Reply

I love astym! Right now I’m going twice a week to work on my Achilles but I typically go once or twice a month for maintenance. It hurts so good!

Reply

Yes, I have leg problems. My right is a lot shorter than my left. I broke my femur in college (stress from running) and Mayo Clinic suspects it is the reason for my foot & ankle injuries. I’ve compensated for it for too long. Now I’m in PT working on those imbalances. I wished your doctor lived closer although my PT at Mayo is pretty darn good!

Reply

OUCH… super painful! Just come stay with us and go see him haha. Glad you have such an awesome PT and I hope that your feet and ankles stay healthy!

Reply

Yes! I had leg length differences. It’s caused 2 stress fractures in my left foot two separate times because I was putting more pressure on it when I would land on my foot because of the length difference!

Reply

WOW… that is crazy Amanda! I am glad that you have figured out what the problem is and I hope these stress fractures stop happening asap!

Reply

I remember that photo of Brooke. She was so tiny then :)

Reply

I KNOW… I miss those itty bitty days! I hope you are having a fabulous day Valerie!

Reply

I foam roll at least 5 times per week and I have physical therapy exercises that I do 3-5 times per week to keep my wanky hip happy.

When my husband was in college, his dog was trained to get bottles/cans from the fridge for him. Except he wouldn’t stop, so he just brought all the cans and bottles to you until there were none left in the fridge!

Reply

BAHAHAHA that is seriously the coolest thing! Brilliant.

Good job on keeping up with the rolling and pt exercises Sarah!

Reply

That’s interesting about the leg issue. I actually never knew about that, thanks for sharing Janae.

I guess seeing deer tracks is better then bear tracks!

Reply

You are such an optimist Hollie. PS I am seriously considering Phoenix… wanna pace me for a killer time?!?

Reply

I foam roll quite a bit, do yoga, weight lifting, and lots of squats/butt/hip exercises.

Reply

Trivia—> what are your favorite but/hip exercises? I’m always on the lookout for more.

Reply

I like reverse lunges, clamshells, single leg squats, single leg deadlifts, and leg lifts.

I have so many problems with my right hip- getting through my last marathon with no pain was a miracle. I think all of the squats I did while training really helped.

Reply

Oh, I also really like doing different variations of jump squats.

Reply

Thank you so much for sharing. I hear ya… it is amazing what squats and strength work does for our running and injuries! Here’s to an injury free 2015!

Reply

That’s the plan! Hope your hip is feeling better!

Reply

So cute that she loves broccoli as much as you do!

Annabelle finally kicked the bottle habit (it was long overdue) and she is eating much better now! She also loves to give hugs and pat you on the back while she is hugging you. It melts my heart. :)

Reply

Oh the pat on the back… that is the cutest thing ever. MISS YOU LINDA… we should do another race together asap!

Reply

My left leg is longer than my right. I am supposed to wear a lift in my shoe but I hardly don’t anymore. Shame on me. Have been lucky that I haven’t had any injuries thus far (fingers crossed).
We have a min-pin/chihuahua (mutt) named Chewy that I found as a stray about 5 years ago. He is the sweetest dog ever. Don’t know if this is a special talent but his favorite spot in a car is on the dash. He rides there almost always in all of our vehicles. We just got a Corgi-Mini Aussie mix puppy about 3 weeks ago so just getting to know him and his personality. Chewy is adjusting much better than I thought he would since he has been an only child for so long. We don’t have kids yet so my only proud parenting moments are of the doggies. Ha!

Reply

Okay, that is the cutest thing ever. I would love to see Chewy hanging out in the dashboard as you are driving around town! Glad he is adjusting so well! Hey, I want to be a proud parent of a dog too!

Reply

I have no idea if one of my legs is shorter! I’m the same way when I dress for running. I’d rather be cold than hot with the exception of my hands and feet! I won’t hesitate to double up gloves and socks.

Reply

We are a lot alike!

Reply

Two amazing words for you ladies…HAND WARMERS…makes all the difference in the world when you feel cool but have warm hands on a chilly run!!

Reply

I have been hydrating like a champ and eating lots of quality nutrients. My body and mind feel optimal this way and that can only help prepare for my double digest run I am absolutely craving.
For the mental aspect of it I also wear my running clothes to remind me I am a runner even if not running right now.

Reply

I definitely think the BEST thing I do when I’m not running is hot yoga. It stretches me out and helps build more strength in my core and legs.

I should do more foam rolling and more strength training but that’s for another discussion.

Brooke is so cute! I wish my 2 year old would eat more veggies! I always have to find ways to sneak them in. My proud parenting moment lately was when my munchkin was able after tons of practice to identify a ton of her ABC’s. Not all but most, we’ve made the flashcards a fun no pressure game and I love that she loves learning.

Reply

Dogs are the best! My husband and I adopted a puggle two years ago, and he (Charlie) is the sweetest little thing. He’s smart and has figured out when my husband gets home from work. At 5pm he’ll sit by the window waiting to see the car, and then start squealing with excitement and running in circles. Charlie also likes to be held on my hip like he’s a human baby!
Pilates, yoga, and squats/bridges/lunges help so much with my running!

Reply

That picture of you and Brooke working out gets me every time, it’s so cute!

Reply

My right leg is shorter than my left leg. My PT found this out after I pulled my Achilles when I started running. I have tons of issues with that leg (torn labrum, IT Band) and I do leg lifts, bridges, planks and squats (not as often as I should) to help strengthen my core. When I am really good, I alternate running with weight work and the elliptical. Haven’t been really good for about 9 weeks, see next comment!

We have a puppy-16 weeks old- and her talent is falling asleep on me. If I get up, she gets up! Does not make for a productive day. Good thing she is really cute!

Reply

I would never move! I am so happy that you have a puppy.

Glad that your PT found out the problem and here’s to an injury-free year! Just plank with the puppy asleep on your back;)

Reply

I think ab work weirdly helps my running! Keeps those hips stabilized!!

Weird fact of the day: We didn’t have any croutons so on top of my mountain salad I put popcorn. It was amazing and I regret nothing. Thought you’d appreciate that one. :)

Reply

I am in bed before 9 PM nightly….asleep by 10PM. Sleep is so critical to recovery! Also, I’m a fan of active recovery so I’ll often do some light pedaling on the nights that I have long runs and/or try to get out for walks.

One of our dogs is an ultra dog in training – he’s up to about 8.5 miles….he actually knows to start running when my Garmin beeps.

Our youngest son (5) told me he wants to be an “exerciser” when he grows up!

Reply

That’s one of the cutest things ever…an exerciser! Way to set a good example, Mom!

Reply

Duncan my labradoodle knows when we get off the highway to go to my brothers house. He gets so excited. He also knows how to do lots of silly circus tricks. And when I drive up my block as I am headed home I can see him in the window of my living room and I can see his face when he realizes it’s me. So cute.
I need to foam roll more. I definitely have more issues on my left leg from running on the roads.

Reply

Loved your article in WR. You are rocking it and totally showing up in all of my feed. :) way to go.

And proud mommy moment.. my daughter knows how to take selfies. She knows the correct way to point my phone and she even says cheese as she holds it. Haha ok maybe not so proud, but it’s petty cute

Reply

Oh yea and she’s almost 2 (next month)

Reply

That is seriously awesome. Be proud:)

PS you can’t escape me… muhahaha!

Reply

Agreed- would rather be a little cold than too hot out there, except for my hands! The Luluelmon Fluff Over Mittens have been a lifesaver this year – best running accessory I have ever purchased!

Reply

One of my dogs is incredibly smart. I can look at him, then look at his pillow and he knows to go lay down. He also gives high fives. Our other dog’s superpower is being able to produce bucket-like quantities of drool…enthusiastically.

When I started running this morning, I actually felt like I was “on tilt.” I think my body was totally out of whack. It took about 2.5 miles to feel like I had any mojo. I often wonder if I have leg length issues.

Reply

Oh, and when I originally read your title, I read it as “undressed”, not underdressed. Thought maybe I stumbled onto the wrong blog. :)

Reply

In that diagram you have above, may I ask which one your left and right leg corresponds to?

Reply

Luckily, I am dealing with a functional problem and not anatomical like the diagram!

Reply

I had an issue where my left leg was slightly longer. Turned out to be hip impingement where I had a little too much bone on my hip and the femur wasn’t shaped correctly so range of motion was terrible amongst other painful things. No wonder I could never get past the 10K distance for years!
Anyway 4 weeks ago today I had FAI arthroscopic surgery to shave some of the excess bone off, un-wrinkle the labrum & fix some other stuff.
It’s a rather difficult thing to properly diagnose, but the surgeon I went with actually invented the surgery he did on me and I am already feeling so much better.
Cheers to keeping you running injury free!!

My dog is awesome … on cold nights, at some point I often feel him cuddle up against my back for extra warmth. And we have family howling sessions – if myself or my husband starts to howl (at least, a human version), Angus will start howling at us too, with funny little yips in the middle. We really want to know what he is saying to us! And whenever we leave the house, he does a little barking dance at the door, as if to say, he can’t believe we are leaving without him. I <3 Angus!

I love that picture of you and Brooke stretching – so adorable!

Reply

I don’t do them as often as I should, but I foam roll, stretch, and I have recently started really trying to work strength training into my schedule.

My dog loves asparagus, oranges and snap peas. He loves to cuddle on the couch (he’s 80lbs) and doesn’t get that he’s not lap dog sized.

I haven’t been told I have LLI, but I sometimes wonder if I do. All my injuries are always on the same side of my body.

Reply

My Boston Terrier insists on sleeping under the covers. I tried to stop him but I’m a sound sleeper so I tend to wake up snuggling with my dog- with his head on the pillow!
Proud mama moment- my daughter was so good about me having a migraine this afternoon. She gave me hugs and kisses on my head and she is quietly reading without even commenting that this is her usual tv time

Reply

Funny about the skin turning orange. That happened to me when I had been in Hawaii working at a place for several months where we squeezed vegetables and fruits to fresh juices and delivered it to hotels.

When I got home my Dad panicked thinking I had jaundice but I never felt better. When he asked me what I was eating I said, carrots, pineapple, oranges, mangoes, papayas. Suddenly I started laughing thinking about it.

I was quite orange but had also been running and swimming a lot.

Reply

that is adorable that both your mom and brooke were hiding to scare you!!!

i have a dog that loves to try and crawl in small spaces around the house! it’s adorable to watch her squirm under the couch AND she’s the best snuggler

Reply

Wow, I’m surprised the stats are so high with injury due to leg inequality. I have a tendency to get really tight hips and over compensate in my running. Does not feel good, but probably not nearly as bad as some of the injuries in the comments. Ouch!

That pic of your itty bitty girl is SO SO cute! She is definitely heart breaker material ;)

Reply

Just getting back to running after my third baby! Maybe I should check your dr out! Santa brought us a silver lab! She’s cute but way more work than my 8 week old human baby ;) if you need a dog fix let me know! ( my Shirley is just a little younger than your Brooke!)

Reply

Im so glad I read this today (but i read your blog everyday!). I had a stress fracture in my left femur a few years ago and i always suspected it was because i was running on at the beach on the strand that was tilted for drainage. it was higher at my left leg. I also found out that i have scoliosis raising my hip a bit higher on one side. I’ve learned to stretch every day and foam roll after long runs.

I have a tiny 4 lb maltese who is 15 years old. He snores like a man. its amazing so much noise comes out of such a tiny creature.

Reply

My dog can do may tricks but my favorite is when he gives high fives! We are proud parents :) When I did insanity over the summer I noticed my leg strength had increased so much and could run a little faster. Loved that!

Reply

I’ll never forget when I was about 16 and my new ballet teacher told me that one leg (I can’t remember which) was longer than the other. It blew my mind like noting else haha. At that time, I had never hear of any such thing and I could hardly believe it was even possible!

Reply

I’ve gotten way better about core and hips. I don’t know if you read 50 after 40, but his blog has a lot of great info on the hips. I use some of his workouts.

Reply

I also have my right leg being shorter. I can feel it in my hips when it becomes grumpy. Luckily I have an amazing massage therapist that knows what to do.

Reply

I’d so much rather be underdressed than overdressed when I’m running! Yesterday, I wore a tank top and shorts while my running buddies wore leggings and jackets in the icy rain…I was a little cold, but I just can’t stand getting hot when I’m running in the cold! I realize that this makes absolutely no sense.

Reply

Our dog Dude the Black Lab has some pretty neat quirks, I swear he’s like a mini human sometimes. My husband taught him to bring us his food bowl for breakfast and dinner.

When I was running I would try and focus on my core. The races that were “easier” were always the ones where I was diligent with my crunches.

Reply

I constantly have hip issues too and I definitely think its related to leg length discrepancies from my pelvis getting out of balance. My chiro helps a lot but its sill really annoying to deal with. Im sure that the adjustments help but I wish I could figure out a way to keep everything where it is supposed to be on its own:)

Reply

That pic of you and itty bitty Brooke is the cutest!

Proud mama here! After 6 months of battling potty training, my daughter finally did it all on her own! When I asked if she needed to go, she said no. I left the room, came back, and she had undressed herself, went potty, and disposed of it.

We have two black labs and they are THE BEST! Get one now! :) My girl adores them. She has dressed them, tucked them in, ridden them, and still they are inseparable. They are the first ones in her room every morning and they protect her like you wouldn’t believe.

Reply

Our dog makes noises when he sleeps some times! It’s the cutest thing ever. My boyfriend calls it “puppy adventures” :) the one thing I’m strict about to help with my running is making sure I drink a ton of water every day. I suck at everything else though – stretching, foam rolling etc.

Janae-

I went through a really bad eating disorder, and the grace of God, I have come through it stronger than ever. I have followed along your blog for quite some time now, an dI ahem enjoyed every post. I just wanted to take a quick moment to thank you. You inspire me more than I could ever articulate as I watch you overcome struggles that you do not deserve. You are incredible. I cannot wait to be a sweet mom like you and have a beautiful girl such as Brooke (if that is how my life plans out to be! who knows!)

Also, I have just gotten back into running, and boy do you motivate me!

Reply

Julia,
I can’t thank you enough for your sweet comment. I am so happy that you are doing so much better! You are incredible. Keep in touch and keep on running:) I hope the rest of your week goes great!

Thanks,
Janae

One of my dogs knows he’s not supposed to sleep on the bed, but every morning I wake up and he’s laying right beside me. He will start off in the floor in his own dog bed, and he waits until he thinks I’m asleep to jump into my bed. It is annoying but part of me feels like it’s kind of sleep that he wants to sleep with me. Oh, and he doesn’t know any cool tricks or anything :)

Reply

I saw that dog story too! It made me so happy, i emailed it to my mom and sister. I love animals and have 5 dogs and 3 cats. One of dogs, Muffin, smiles. When I call her name she makes a huge grin and shows all her teeth. Shes such a sweetie.
Im glad youre training is going well! Keep up the great work, i know it’ll pay off!

Reply

No LLI, but my left SIDE joint has a tendency to lock causing my right side to be higher and then I have a lot of hip pain. Luckily I work in a physical therapy clinic and they have shown me muscle energy exercises that help tremendously.

Reply

Ahh yes! Dogs are the best! That story is too much. I’m hoping to get a dog soon and can’t wait to have stories. :]

Reply

Oh my goodness that picture of baby Brooke just melts me!! I would love a dog, but sadly now isn’t the time :( We are in an apartment that doesn’t allow them. I feel like I am proud of everything my baby girl does, but most recently I am proud of how many new words she is learning :)

Reply

I saw that story earlier and loved it!

We are such dog lovers around here, especially Labs. At one time we had four Labs living inside (2 yellows, a black, and a chocolate). We only have one yellow left, Duke, who is nine and as laid back as they come. We had a chocolate lab, Zeus, who lived to be almost 17. We called him the Stealth Lab because he could jump onto the bed while we were asleep and we never felt him getting up there. He knew he wasn’t allowed to get on the beds, so he learned to wait until we were asleep and then he’d jump up and lie down wherever he landed. We finally gave up and let him take his place at the foot of the bed. There are worse things in life than a warm puppy on your feet.

Reply

I have a leg length discrepancy due to scoliosis. It causes me great trouble with my hips if I don’t take the time to strength train and foam roll regularly.

I have a 120 lb black lab we call the gentle giant. He loves to swim anytime he gets the chance. My 10 lb mini dachshund, not so much. So the lab jumps in the water and swims up to the boat and the dachshund jumps on his back and rides. It’s hilarious. He even does it in the pond behind our house. We posted a video of it on youtube. Yeah, I’m that crazy dog lady, lol.

Reply

Janae, this explains so much about my recent running-related injuries! I just started training for my very first marathon and for whatever reason my right leg has been killing me for no apparent reason. I vaguely remembered the nurse at my last physical saying one of my legs was longer than the other but forgot about it until I read this post. Looks like I might need to get this checked out…thanks for your insight!

Reply

I like to get massages, good amount of core work and weights. I need to foam roll more – here’s to more foam rolling in 2015!

Proud parenting moment – my 23 month old fell down today (a little bump). My 4 year old immediately ran over and gave hugs and asked if she was okay. SO PROUD of her sweet nature and kind heart.

Reply

My right innominate is always anteriorly rotated, making my right leg appear “longer.” It also leads to some funny shifts in my posture in regards to my shoulder and my loving Quadratus Lumborum (QL) (you can’t tell with the naked eye but I can feel them). I love my QL trigger points and my TFL has had some severe trigger points to the point of injury. You can use muscle energy techniques to correct the obliquity briefly yourself if you have the hip pain before you can get into the doc. I’ve also been interning at a place called ADAPT in Beaverton, OR and they have some amazing routines that calm the adductors and work on the little stabilizing muscles in the hip so the bigger muscles don’t have to be overworked and pull our pelvis in all different directions. I love my dogs!! They always alway always know when my boyfriend and I are going running, there is no way to leave her! The ADAPT exercises are what I do outside of running- they are awesome! I’ve definitely turned orange before but from carrots, although sweet potatoes are amazing! I love your post :D

Have you heard of Rolfing? Seems like your injury or proneness to injury is specialized to one area but I started working with a rolfer after this article: http://mobile.nytimes.com/blogs/opinionator/2014/11/17/less-talk-more-therapy/

My experience isn’t as heavily the emotional components outlined by the writer but I’ve had chronic headaches for years plus IT band + foot pain when upping my mileage. In working with my rolfer (it’s a mix between PT and massage therapy) I’ve learned how everything is connected and so based on your alignment that degrades over time. Our session is like someone physically foam rolling you and easily the most pain I’ve ever felt but hoping to decrease daily pain after our 10 step sessions!

Reply

Yep, I have the exact same recurring problem, and on the same leg (the right). I never know the exact moment of when it goes “out” rather I get this feeling on the subsequent runs as if I’m dragging my right leg behind me a bit. I notice that it’ll scuff the ground a bit. It’s tough to move in a fluid motion, almost as if it’s a wooden leg. I can still run on it, but it’s just… off. You know exactly what I’m talking about, I’m sure. If I keep running on it like that then I’ll get some problems… sore hamstring, sore knee, sore ankle… etc. Once I even got sciatica as all the muscles in my right leg were inflamed from working too hard at moving (because my hip wasn’t rotating properly).

Reply

WOW! You are a fast runner! I definitely underdress and often get looks when I;m wearing a tank top and capris while running. But it’s not nearly as cold here in California, so I can get a way with it. That dog post was adorable and congrats on your article in Women’s Running. I had some Leg Length Inequality that was solved at a massage therapist, while I was pregnant, although I’m sure I’ll need to get more work done in the future. Happy Marathon Training!

Reply

I started turning orange too from all the sweet potatoes, butternut squash- so I am trying to back off a little, but I NEED sweet potatoes in my life! :-)

Reply

I have SI issues and I’m pretty sure I also have a leg length discrepancy. I totally had a nerd alert moment because we used similar pictures (regarding coxa vara/valga) like the one you used in some of my classes last semester. Have a great Thursday!

Reply

I actually stay very warm when I run. I can run in the cold easily and have to be careful of overdressing…I get headaches when that happens!
I have a stalker dog that follows me everywhere I go. He even sits and stares at me while I do my core exercises! As soon as I am done he is at my side. No petting needed just to be close, its really kind of odd.

Reply

I would always rather be a little underdressed– being hot is the worst!

Reply

After I start training or running longer distances, my left knee always starts to bother me. My friend is a physical therapist so she will usually dry needle me and I have to tape my knee so that it stays in place.

That article is so sweet!!

Reply

Very interesting about the LLI! I have noticed this in myself recently because I started wearing high heels with pants for my job and always had one hem being shorter than the other! I thought it was just the pants, but as it happened in every pair, I knew something was going on.

Reply

Do you cook sweet potatoes every day? Or do you cook a bunch like once a week? If so, what is the best way to keep/reheat them?

Reply

For years, in both ballet and running, I had injuries on the left side of my body. These included Achilles tendonitis, FHL tendonitis, jumpers knee and metatarsal stress fracture. A year and a half ago, I went to see a doctor at UVA that specializes in running and he explained that my right leg is longer than my left. I now wear a heel left in all my left shoes and have not had a problem since! Small change with big effects :). You should look into it!

Reply

Your Dad’s painting is beautiful! I am an artist too and do mostly charcoal and pencil drawings of animals.

Very cool deer footprints! I was running my dog last night and we came face to face with 4 deer crossing the road in front of us! (These animals aren’t afraid of anything or anyone in our town!) I think you would enjoy a dog to run with Janae, and Brooke would love it!

Reply

Yeah I absolutely hate being hot. So I usually am under dressed for my runs.

Reply

Try wall-sits (a/k/a wall squats), 8 per day for 1 minute each (every other day). Wall squats engage every muscle in your legs as well as your glutes at the same time…this has helped me tremendously with imbalance issues since all the muscles fire at the same time. I stand straight against the wall and then slide down until I am in a seated position with me feet about a foot apart, hold for one minute. I swear by them!

Reply

Stretching! I think Crossfit actually helps because we work on mobility a lot and I’ve strengthened my back, core, and glutes a lot with all the weight lifting!

Reply

You sure those are deer tracks? They look like rabbit to me :)

I have a blind dog, so he has learned out of necessity how to follow voice commands so he doesn’t run into things (step up/down, stop, slow, go left, etc). I think that’s pretty cool!

Reply

My dog will whisper. He barks and we tell him to be quiet and he’ll do a little soft ruff. It’s so cute!!

Reply

Mmm, roasted broccoli is the best! I love that Brooke loves it too!
