Monday Matters & something I do before running in the COLD.

Just a bunch of randomness for today:

***My dad found me at 5:something one morning just hanging out in the laundry room.  When I know I am about to go outside to do a REALLY cold run I put my headband/ear warmer in the dryer for a few minutes.  I then put it on my head when it is nice and hot and run out the door.  It helps me to get out the door with a smile on my face and prepared to take on winter.

***I go in and watch her sleep a little too much.  I can’t help it.

IMG 3740

***She is really into throwing snowballs at me lately.  Luckily, her definition of a snowball is—>  1/5th of the size of a marble.

IMG 3727

***Just one last picture from Disneyland because I am secretly trying to find a reason for us to go back soon.  Gotta take advantage of the whole ‘under 3 is free’ thing.

IMG 3708

***Friends that hike Flatiron together, stay together.

IMG 3229

***We spend an enormous amount of time at play places during the winter.  We have become quite the experts on the right ones to go to.

***I love buying salad kits and this one from Costco is my favorite:

IMG 3807

I spice it up with a protein (shrimp today) and some more veggies and I am a happy camper.

IMG 3808

***Brooke was quite the party animal last night at Megan’s house.

***Ummm did anyone else know about this froyo 5k?!?!  A reader just emailed me about it and it will be coming to SLC soon… I feel good about that.

Warm gloves or a hat are necessary! It’s such a good idea to get out the door!

I can’t do shrimp. Something about the texture gets to me, I wish I liked it though!

I did a race in Colorado that had an oatmeal bar at the end – fresh, hot oatmeal, all kinds of berries, nuts, brown sugar, whipped cream – it was awesome!

I have a headache today and I’m ready to be off work so I can go workout! Then brownies for dessert tonight! Woohoo! :)

Cold weather running: I lay my clothes, gloves, hat, everything out the night before. I try to get out into the cold before I have time to think about it!
Shrimp: nay
Sadly I rarely enjoy the food after racing. My stomach just wants safe bland foods.
Monday matter: I had a great meeting with a web designer to work on my blog!

You asked the other day if anyone totaled up their miles from 2014…
I finally got around to doing it.

I had an injury and other health issue that knocked me out for 4 months, but my total was 663.11.

And yes, the .11 really matters. :)

Today was a rest day after a 21miler in the hail and windstorm so that meant a coffee date at 5pm before the evening craziness! Coffee keeps the cuckoo down on a rest day.

Shrimp-yes, but my kids like it more than I
When I was in High School my mom and I did a 10k in the “bakery district” and they had these darling mini loaves of Franz bread. They were so cute!

Totally warm the accessories on the radiator or in the dryer. Shoes and socks included! I cover the radiator in my office with my socks, shoes, and hat and at home the mittens and balaclava are on there, too.

I just stared to *really* follow you and love your enthusiasm/hilarity.
My monday is just coming to a close with an episode of House on Netflix. Enjoy your day!

Made this creamy coconut-parsnip soup that I got to enjoy for lunch with some chicken. But it was almost sweet like it had added sugar – I didn’t realize cooked parsnips get so sweet.

Wow, Brooke’s lashes are so long! Just randomly noticed that from the profile picture.

brilliant idea to throw cold weather running gear in the dryer before running out the door!

Reply

I love shrimp!! Hmm best treat after a race would be the New Jersey marathon. We got soft pretzels and mini cupcakes.

Reply

That’s a great idea for warming gear up in the morning! I just bought a bunch of hand warmers to slip into my gloves.

Reply

Over the summer I did a zombie survivor race (I was actually a zombie), and at the end there was beer and food trucks! It doesn’t get much better than that.

Reply

I love running in the cold so I just bundle up really well and head on out. but that is a really really good idea.

I only like grilled shrimp. It’s so so SO amazing. I could live on it. It’s delicious.
I don’t like cold shrimp.
I definitely don’t like breaded shrimp.
Just grilled.
All the time.

The babies are the best and most beautiful when they are sleeping. For obvious reasons. Their sweetness is so very evident.

I am a horrible (wasteful? but, sorry, i don’t care!!) overuser of my dryer in the winter. At night when I’m taking my shower, I put my flannel pj’s or oiselle yeti in the dryer so that when I get out of the shower, I have hot clothes to put on :) I hadn’t thought to put my running gear in there. Thanks a lot b/c now my electric bill will only go up! But seriously, awesome idea. Running socks will definitely be going in there.

Reply

I got one of these for my mom for Christmas. She loves it. Might be more efficient than throwing everything in the dryer.

Hi! Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. My mother got one of those for me for Christmas two years ago! It doesn’t get hot enough for my liking but I appreciate your feedback :)

Reply

That’s good to know! I was thinking about getting one for myself. I should probably try hers first. Then again, we live in California, so it’s not like we’re battling really harsh weather.

Reply

Ah, I see! I am in Boston. Brrr :)

Reply

Love the dryer idea! My favorite is wrapping up in a towel straight from the dryer after a shower, especially during the winter.

To get myself out the door, I make plans with running buddies! And, I don’t let myself think too much, but just do it :)

Reply

I have to try your dryer trick – it’s so hard to get out the door in the morning when it’s freezing out.

Reply

Brooke’s eyelashes! Holy moly, lucky girl.

Love shrimp. I love the idea of the headband in the dryer. Usually, I’ll put my towel in the dryer while I’m in an ice bath, and then my boyfriend brings it over to me when I get out. It’s glorious.

Reply

That’s a good idea in general before running in the cold! A quick 5 minutes in the dryer for all my gear makes it feel better when I first step out.

Reply

I wish I had the problem of needing to do something to get out the door when it’s cold. It’s been in the 80s here!

I never really like the food provided at the end of the race. I’d much rather drive to Chipotle for a chicken bowl or go get a big burger :)

Reply

Putting your gear in the dryer is the best idea ever! I never thought of that, but I’m always going to use it. I love shrimp. Basically any kind of fish is awesome.

Reply

I give you credit for running in the cold! I can only run on the treadmill in the winter!

Reply

I love looking at pictures of little Brooke too! Nothing too exciting going on in my Monday. Fish for dinner? Sounds good to me! Happy Monday! :)

Reply

That’s a great idea about putting running clothes in the dryer before going outside! I always warm up for 5 minutes or so inside with a few dynamic stretches before heading out into the cold. It helps my joints feel awake and warm and makes the run (especially the first mile) feel better.

Reply

Hmmm, why is there no fro-yo race in Chicago? My favorite post race treat was after the Elvis is Alive 5k – frozen chocolate covered bananas and peanut butter sandwiches.
Grilled shrimp – yes!
Today was a total indoor day – spin class and tread class.

Reply

I try not to get too warmed up before a run, because I know I will just be disappointed later. Lol. So I don’t go by any heaters.

And awee I love shrimp.!!

Reply

I wish my dryer wasn’t in the cold basement, or I’d totally steal this trick! I love shrimp, and I also love shrimp chips. They are a crunchy snack, kind of like baked fries, except shrimp flavored!!

My post race food faves are so simple… Hot dogs and ice cream sandwiches. I can’t even remember the food at other races, but I remember that hot dog like it was yesterday.

Reply

That dryer thing is a GENIUS idea!!!!!
I just saw something on the news about a measles outbreak at Disneyland….it was on the TV at the gym. I wasn’t really listening to it, I just saw it pop up.
Fro yo at the end of a 5k…maybe but not anything farther. My stomach rebels after races :)

Reply

The Hershey Park half was my favorite in terms of the chocolate and goodies given away at mile 12 and at the end of the race! I love taking my clothes and gear out of the dryer right before heading outside – definitely makes it a little more comfortable.

Reply

I love shrimp! So yummy – but I haven’t had shrimp in awhile. I kind of want a shrimp ring all to myself now….

I haven’t had that much great food after a race – but once I had a burger and a beer – it was great!

Reply

Shrimp – YES! Love it even more on a salad, and I need to hunt that one down at my local Costco, it sounds incredible!

I usually take a couple hours to get my appetite back post-race, and I almost always opt for super salty burger and fries with a giant Dr. Pepper. It ALWAYS hits the spot!

Reply

Woah! A froyo race?! That sounds amazing! And yay yay yay to shrimp – LOVE THEM!

Reply

I have the same ear warmer. It’s my fave!

Reply

Lucky Sara!! I always put my shoes over the heater vent before heading out on a cold run. No frozen toesies for me!

Shrimp are delish. My husband makes this bread with melted cheese and shrimp. Somehow, it is SO GOOD!

Monday is my down day to work and do chores around the house. I’ll be watching the college football championship this eve.

Reply

I love how Brooke’s hair looks like Mickey’s ears.

LOVE shrimp, love all seafood basically.

Has the best post race food just yesterday….hot cocoa and warm chocolate fondue with dippings like marshmallows, cookies, pretzels, bananas. It was delicious.

I will only get out the door for super cold runs if friends are waiting for me. If it’s just me….I will stay in bed, lol.

Reply

I LOVE shrimp – put shrimp in anything and I’ll eat it.

A half that I ran last year had popsicles in addition to the usual bagels and such – also a fan of races that end with cookies. :)

I went dishes/laundry crazy today – I was super productive! :)

Reply

I love the dryer idea! I am such a baby about cold weather that I rarely run outside in the winter. Will try the dryer this weekend.

I ran the Hot Chocolate 15k in DC/National Harbor, which had chocolate treats at the end, but the race was such a fiasco (started super late and traffic was a disaster!) that I didn’t have time to get anything! :(

Shrimp is ok, I love grilled shrimp wrapped in prosciutto during the summer, with a nice salad.

Monday matters- ran 8 miles at a 7:50 pace, speedy for me! Spent the day doing loads and loads of my 10 year old’s laundry – she tested positive for the flu and she had the flu shot! Luckily she is doing much better today.

Reply

I love salad mixes for when I am feeling like just throwing things together. I got one from Costco recently that has all sorts of goodness like kale, shaved brussel sprouts, cabbage, etc in it. In fact I may end up having it for dinner!

Reply

Mmmm…I love shrimp! I think chocolate (and a rose) is the best post-race treat I’ve received.

I get out the door by using hand warmers (my hands are always freezing) and dreaming of the food (and hot shower) I’ll have when I get home!!

Reply

I love putting my running/workout clothes in the dryer before I put them on to work out. I agree it does help!

That salad looks delicious, I guess I need to check our Costco for that mix. They always have great healthy foods there.

Reply

Just thought i’d tell you that you are the best. That is all. xoxoxo

I’m going to Disneyland tomorrow with my kiddos! It’s the last day our annual passes are good. We’re all pretty excited.

Reply

Cold weather pep talk with myself, “Dear Amanda, as long as you don’t trip on ice and manage to stay vertical this whole run, you win. Love, Amanda”

At the end of a hard run I want all the carbs and I can usually mass consume a bag of Smart Pop popcorn….it gets ugly.

Reply

Oh my, never any shrimp for me please, highly allergic here. It’s sent me to the hospital on two occasions.

But now that froyo 5k is right up my alley! :)

Reply

I’m actually a big wuss about running outside, whether it’s too hot or cold. Just give me an excuse to run on the treadmill instead, and I’ll take it!

Nay to shrimp. I’m not a big fan of seafood other than fish.

Reply

Hahaha I like that the salad has “fancy lettuce.” I usually put all of my winter running clothes on and get nice and toasty indoors so when I go outside I can start my run a little warm! Love the headband in the dryer idea though!!

Reply

I wear a headband but putting it in the dryer is a great idea. The only problem is that 30 seconds after I start running I feel like taking off all my clothes. I get super hot, real fast!

Reply

Your salads are envious to look at! I wish I could have them as beautiful and fresh as you but I take all my meals to school and they don’t end up looking quite too appealing…

Reply

Shrimp is an occasional thing for me. When I was a kid my dad and uncles would get hundreds (ok maybe one hundred) pounds of shrimp off the boats when they came in (maine, maybe January? ). Anyway, we’d pick them for days. Then eat them for… well… do you remember that scene from Forrest Gump?

Reply

I am surprised Brooke is still sleeping in her crib, V was climbing out about 15 months

Reply

That is a really good idea about the headband. I will have to start doing that…I used to put socks in the dyer all the time before runs.

I hope the froyo 5k comes to Philadelphia sometime soon. That would be amazing.

Reply

I wish I liked shrimp but I. JUST. CAN’T. The texture of it (along with the taste) really makes me gag. The froyo 5k sounds so fun!!

Reply

Three things that help me get out the door in (Canadian) winter:

1. I have a running partner – we depend on each other to get the other out the door.
2. I walk the dog for almost an hour every morning, so during that time I talk to myself about how it’s not that bad and once I’m running, it’ll get better.
3. I use hand warmers – and make sure they are steaming by the time I’m ready to head out!

I, sadly, don’t like any “creatures” that lived in water at one point. :((

Brooke’s eyelashes are AMAZING!!!!

Reply

I once ran a half where they ha Thin Mints at mile 11! I literally stopped in my track and asked the little girl if I could take one. I am pretty sure I am the only one who did haha.

Shrimp are hands down my favorite food on earth! My hometown, St. Augustine Fl has what I truly believe are the best shrimp on the planet! If you talk to the fishermen, they’ll tell you all the reasons why. All I know is they are delicious!

Reply

I love the idea of warming up your ear warmers! I’m going to try that. I have put my blankets in the dryer as I’m heading out the door so I can snuggle with warm blankets when I get home. Depending on the length of the run, I’ll start the coffee pot on my way out the door so I have hot coffee at the end of a cold run.

I don’t really like seafood, but every once in a while I get a real craving for shrimp.

Monday matters because I got free apple pie today and it was DELICIOUS!

Reply

Super random but be cautious if you return to Disneyland- read an article last week about a measles outbreak there! It said most people getting it had not been fully vaccinated.

Reply

Almost everything from Costco is good (I love that place!). I also love shrimp and other seafood :)

Reply

It’s tough when it’s cold. Today with the rain I did lots of thing to try and postpone my run. Finally out at 2pm. Great run but holy cow..WET!
I love that salad!

Reply

A race ends with your choice of strawberry topped waffles or pancakes.

Reply

Oh my, that pic of Brook sleeping is the best! I love to watch my kids sleep too. :)

Favorite race based on food treat is the Krispy Kreme challenge! You run 2.5 miles to the donut shop, eat a dozen donuts and then run 2.5 back (in under 1 hr to “complete” the challenge). I have successfully competed 2x, and I’m not sure if it’s good or bad that I can scarf down 12 KKs so quickly?! Nevertheless, it’s super fun and I do love those yummy KK donuts:). Looking fwd to it next month!

Reply

I had alligator sauce piquant after the Baton Rouge Beach marathon. Not exactly easy on the post-marathon tummy!

Reply

For half marathon distance it doesn’t matter what they have at the end, nothing sounds good. But my family goes to Bear Lake every year during Raspberry Days and run the 5k. They have the best raspberry ice cream at the finish line and I look forward to it every year. Yum.

Reply

Froyo 5k… that is the dream!!!!!

Reply

The Vermont City marathon had Ben and Jerry’s at the end- not bad! And my last marathon in France handed out bottles of wine at the finish…maybe not the best idea. Honestly I’m never very hungry after races..it hits me a few hours later.

I just try to bundle up when its really cold. I like to wear a headband under my hat and tights under a looser pair of pants.

Reply

YAY—> shrimp
My best post-race drink was margaritas….but froyo would totally top that. Bummed they aren’t coming close to me1

Reply

I love the dryer trick. I want to do that with both my headband and socks! That will probably help me not over-layer

Reply

Ear warmers and mittens in the dryer before a run!? That is the smartest thing ever!

Love shrimp; Baja Fresh has a yummy shrimp salad.

Best treat at the end of a race: ice cream sundae!

Reply

Ooo, I am such a shrimp fan but I have been staying away from it during my pregnancy. After this baby comes out (anytime now) my husband and I are planning on having a big seafood dinner. Unless you also can’t have it when breast feeding. Oh brother, I better look into that!

Reply

I love that salad kit from Costco – we had it NYE at a friend’s house and now that’s the only salad I want!

Reply

I love shrimp too :). That 5k sounds amazing!

Reply

Mmm, that salad you made with the shrimp looks awesome!

Reply

I love Brooke’s pink and gray bedding! Do you remember where you got it? (Due in April and in search of cute pink/gray/white bedding!

Reply

FROYO 5K?!?!?! WHAT?!?!?!! AHHHH!!!

Reply

I NEED that “Will Run For Froyo” shirt in my life. Stat.

Reply

When it’s cold outside, I put on my sweat pants and jacket from my soccer days…and drive on over to the gym to run on the treadmill! Haha. But really. When it’s this cold, it takes a lot to even leave my warm house and get in the car and drive there. Shrimp = big fat NAY. I never want to eat right after running but will basically allow myself to eat anything I want later that day/week/month :) Monday matters = 5 mile long run that I didn’t do this weekend and Ohio State destroying Oregon! AKA the perfect Monday.

Reply

A day late, but I had to brag on my daughter who had COLD watermelon for me at the end of Marine Corps Marathon last year. It was warm weather and I was pretty dehydrated (for a variety of reasons). She knew it along the route and rescued me at the end!!

YAY FOR DAUGHTERS!!!

Reply

I recently started reading your blog and I am getting caught up; I do a trail 10k here in Vermont every year (it’s pretty much all carriage trail) and they have a full on pancake breakfast after with maple syrup… I am not usually into sweet breakfast but it’s such a treat to look forward to!

Reply

Where is this play place? I’m always looking for good ones in Utah County.
