16.4 miles of dead legs and being supportive of marathon training.

Our long run was kind of a struggle.  We all felt like we we were wading through mud for a good portion of the run but that builds character right?

Or it makes you finish feeling really tired and wanting to go back to bed for a long time.  I am guessing we felt this way because the three of us all just started ramping up our speed work and mileage the last two weeks for our Boston training.  I just kept telling myself that finishing a long run even though we had tired legs will help us to finish up the marathon when we have really tired legs.

We did have a blast talking and laughing about randomness so it was definitely a good time overall.

It was a gorgeous day out and the air quality was better than it has been all week… Utah gets some pretty crazy inversion during the winter.

IMG 3750

Same pace as my long run last week… I guess my body just likes that pace for now.

IMG 3754

The absolute best thing to come home too.  She is being very supportive with this whole marathon training thing.

IMG 3758

She even reminds me that I need to foam roll after every run.

PS she really does do this all on her own after watching me do it so often…

IMG 3762

One of my absolute favorite college roommates was in town so we were able to meet for dinner.  I wish I got to see her more.

IMG 3772

And then we finally went grocery shopping so that we can eat at home more this next week and eat a little bit healthier too:)  Having a lot of fresh produce at home makes my heart happy.

I shop at Costco or Sprouts. Always have spinach, lettuce, butternut squash, broccoli, brussel sprouts, berries, plantains, bananas, zucchini, sweet potato, carrots and apples for produce. Other regulars are eggs, almond milk, almond butter, canned tuna, chicken breast and fish. All the good stuff!

I foam roll 3x per week. It hurts especially with all the cramping I’m having in my calf but it really does help. Tedious but helps! Enjoy your day ladies!

Reply

Wish we had a sprouts around here, but no. And you’re so diligent about foam rolling. I need that routine. Good work, Megan.

Reply

I did 12.4 this morning and struggled a bit, 16 would have been really tough. Pushing through, as long as there are no injuries/real pain involved always feels good in the end! I need to foam roll more!

Reply

Tough long runs are no fun, but yes, they make us stronger in the long run!

Have a great Sunday with your family!

I’m heading out for a long run this morning…I ate a lot last night so this should be fun. :-)

Reply

I foam roll at least five days a week for a min of ten minutes per session. It helps me know how thorough I’m being if I keep track of how long I’m spending to foam roll.

We always have apples, bananas, Brussels sprouts, sweet potatoes, Carrots and broccoli. Then depending on what is at a good price we pick up random other things.

Good job on the long run! I always feel like the tough runs help you more in the end! Enjoy your Sunday!

I don’t foam roll enough. I try after each run so 3x a week.
My main food shopping happens at Stop and Shop with some shopping at Trader Joes as well.
I am fruitless at the moment but by this evening I’ll have some apples pears and grapefruits.

Reply

I always have strawberries and lemons.
I’m a daily whole foods shopper.
I try to foam I’ll daily…especially if I have a nagging problem area.

Reply

We usually do our weekly shopping at HyVee which is our regular grocery store. Once a month make a trip to same and stock up on skinny pop, coffee, and I always get their grapes!

Reply

Sarah, I love HyVee too! Wednesdays for the 10% off health-food market.

Reply

I always have carrots, cauliflower, cucumber, tomatoes, apples, berries, and bananas on hand. I panic when I run out of any of those!
I usually shop at Trader Joes because it is so close to me!

Reply

Grocery shopping is done mostly at two stores – “The independent” which is a Loblaws store (huge chain in Canada) and Farm Boy, a smaller chain that focuses mostly on fresh fruits, veggies, meats and cheeses…..you won’t find Chips Ahoy or mainstream candy bars at this store. They have their own brands of ice cream, pie, jam, salad dressing.

I foam roll maybe 2x a week

Reply

I foam roll after every single run. Before my husband and I were married I was driving 2.5 hours (each way!) to see him on the weekends as he’s in flight school and I’d ALWAYS bring my foam roller with me!

Reply

I grocery shop at Publix — based in the Southeast.

Fun Fact — I am watching the live stream of the Walt Disney World Marathon and becoming more and more inspired that this is a goal I need to achieve. Obviously I will start with shorter distances first, but you know. ;) Happy Sunday!

I shop

Reply

I do most of my grocery shopping at Market Basket, a small New England chain.
We pretty much always have bananas and spinach.

Reply

I shop the most at Trader Joe’s (as in, too many times in a week) but also go to Whole Foods, Shop Rite and the produce market depending on sales/what I need…always have apples, avocados, bananas, frozen vegetables and frozen berries at all times- the fresh vegetables vary week to week.

Reply

Ever since I adopted my bunny, I mostly have leafy greens at home. That rabbit eats more vegetables than I do! ;-)

Reply

In Utah I shop in Smiths, Whole Foods, and sometimes Sprouts…I go to all three to find the best prices when I have time, or otherwise just Smiths. I always have berries, tomatoes, avocados, spinach, bananas, and apples.

I try to foam roll every day, but sometimes I do a runner’s recovery yoga video from runner’s world instead.

Reply

You can never start foam rolling too young :) Looks like Brooke has the technique down! I do my best to foam roll after ever run but some days it just doesn’t happen…

I always have spinach, frozen peas and frozen corn in our house. Those are our veggie staples.

Nice long run!

Reply

Oh, man. I couldn’t shop while I was on crutches, so as soon as I graduated to one crutch I hit the grocery store for produce! I always have apples, a few other kinds of fruit, lots of lettuce, cilantro (I eat it on everything), various greens, shallots, and broccoli.

Reply

My phone was acting crazy earlier! I shop at Kroger. It is the closest to me and has the best natural selection. I wish Trader Joe’s was closer and I just hate going to multiple stores when I shop!

I just got a foam roller and use it after every run over 6 miles! I think it has helped me during training because I have never been TOO sore.

My 15 miler was pretty good yesterday, but I have had plenty of runs where my legs felt heavy. I am sure my recovery run today will be like that!

Reply

I Love having produce in the house. I have lettuce/spinach and enough veggies to make a glorious salad at any moment. If I don’t, I will grocery shop before the next meal so that it is always an option.
Always have at least 3 varieties of fruit in the house. Right now it is apples, oranges, grapes, and pineapple.

Reply

I agree! I love having fresh fruits and veggies at home, but I hate letting them go bad, so I have to stay on top of it.

I always try to have oranges, apples, bananas, and whatever berry is on sale. As far as veggies go, I pick what is in season, so right now we have had lots of brussels sprouts.

I mostly shop at Aldi – perfect for our budget!

Great job on your run! Have a good week!

Reply

Ha, I feel like that’s one of 4 pictures on your whole blog where you’re not smiling!

Reply

I foam roll every day! I also eat an apple every day and always have them in my house. I also usually have oranges because, Florida

Reply

Tell me about those steak strips I see in your cart?

Reply

They are from Costco and they are my new favorite. SOOO good… if you are a beef jerky fan you should definitely try them out. I hope you have a great week!

Reply

I usually have ALL THE VEGGIES (and fruits) at home. My husband and I are huge vegetable eaters! Our selection changes with the season, but we always have bananas, potatoes, onions, and broccoli year-round. Our current winter additions are oranges, brussels sprouts, and spinach & kale.

I do most of my shopping between my local butcher shop/meat market and SAMs club. My meat market has such great prices on their meat!

I love reading this blog and seeing Brooke’s sweet face! Can’t wait to watch the rest of your Boston training!

Reply

We just got a membership at Costco but we haven’t actually shopped there yet. We got it on Friday, hubby wanted to wait till we could go in the middle of a weekday when it’s quieter! Normally I keep broccoli, cucumbers, spinach, apples, oranges, bananas, and potatoes on hand in the house. I like to make a lot of green smoothies during the week, so I have to have my raw fresh spinach!
I’m not very good at remembering to foam roll after I run. I need to get better about that.

Reply

I am really ramping up my foam rolling as I’ve discovered it seems to be the key to healing my hip flexor issue. I wonder if I could have gotten back to running much sooner (instead of taking basically a month off while I was resting and waiting to feel better) if I had gotten more serious about the foam rolling sooner, but I guess there’s nothing I can do about that now!

Reply

I try to foam roll every day but it usually happens about 5 days a week. We eat at home all the time so we always try to have a lot of fresh fruits and veggies around. Bananas, apples, spinach, and broccoli are a must every week! We have a local grocery store (Harris teeter) that has an online shopping option- its great because we pick out what we want online and just go and pick it up! There is usually a $4 fee but sometimes they waive it, and in my opinion its worth it to avoid a crowded grocery store on the weekends!

Reply

That picture with the HUGE mountain in the background in so pretty. I want to run where you run. Today I will likely be foam rolling a lot after my long run – it has been a big week for my body and it is definitely feeling it.

My favorite places to shop are Trader Joes and Costco. For just the basic things we shop at Safeway. I always have sweet potatoes, bananas, and apples in my kitchen!!

Reply

I mostly shop at Costco and Aldi for the staples, although there is a nearby Harris Teeter that is pretty convenient in case I need one or two items for something.

Reply

Most often I have spinach, zucchini, brocolli, cauliflower, onion, garlic, Brussels sprouts and winter squash.

I shop at 3 places almost every week: Lucky’s is my favorite, Albertsons because that’s where they have the good bananas and coffee deals and Walmart (unfortunately) because they carry some items I can’t get anywhere else.

I only foam roll when I feel like I need it. For some reason, babying myself with foam rolling, ice baths and massage when I am otherwise feeling fine seems to cause injury for me rather than prevent it. My stretching routine exists but is minimal for the same reason.

I love the picture of you and your running buddies. And I can tell that is a pretty amazing sky in the background.

Reply

Kroger has the grocery market cornered in Memphis unless you can stand to go to Wal-Mart, something I just can’t make myself do. I always have bananas, carrots, celery, and grapes handy. In the winter I crave oranges and red grapefruit, so those are always on my list.

Reply

Ahhh… the dead legs feeling. I know it so well! But you’re right–the best way to teach our bodies how to run when we’re exhausted, is to run when we’re exhausted. It sucks, but it’s great training.

Reply

Oh, how I miss broccoli! I’m about 39 weeks along in my pregnancy and baby girl does NOT let me eat broccoli. I burp it up for days. TMI?!! Haha. Looking forward to eating broccoli again in the future. Enjoy those veggies!!

Reply

Awesome long run!!! :) I love fresh produce too…it really makes me so so happy to have a ton of healthy foods at home!!:)

Reply

I should really foam roll more often…I usually just do it when I feel the need to. Whoops. That’s not super proactive.

I grocery shop at Kroger and Costco…I see that superfoods salad in your cart…LIVE off that stuff

Reply

Getting ready to head out for an easy (and slow because of ice) 11 miler. I’m with you on the speed work, just started it and my legs are still tired from Wed!

Reply

I just got a foam roller for christmas, I can’t wait to start using it some more!

Reply

I’m about to go on my first run since the beginning of December! I’ve been so sick & I’m still feeling rough but have to try and ease back into it, until I figure out what’s going on with my body! I’ve missed it a lot but I’ve realised how important it is to rest when sick! Brooke looks better at foam rolling than I am ;)

Reply

I don’t foam roll nearly enough, but I am dedicated to daily stretching after a run!

I like to have fresh spinach leaves, fuji apples and zucchini in the house (sort of an odd mix)! I also like to have frozen peaches and frozen mango around for smoothies :)

Reply

I like that pace also. And Yumm I see a big bag of sweet potatoes in that cart.!

I never foam roll. Whoops

Reply

We almost always have onions, green peppers, broccoli, yellow squash, and zucchini in the house. Those vegetables are just so easy to throw in a variety of dishes. The grocery store we shop at it called Payless which is funny because people from out of town always think I’m buying shoes if I talk about grocery shopping. :)

Reply

Winter marathon training is hard! I had to do 16 treadmill miles this week and pray I get outside with friends next week. Just booked my hotel for Boston so there is no turning back, just cannot wait to get to Hopkinton!!!!

Wegmans is the best for fruits and veggies!! If you are ever on the east coast, check them out!!!

Reply

I would love to see what kind of meals you eat this week with what you bought. I’m trying to eat better at home and need meal ideas!

Reply

I foam roll every night before bed
My favorite grocery store is trader joes and I do all my good shopping there every week! I always have kale, spinach, tomatoes, apples, bananas on hand , happy Sunday!

Reply

Way to push through your long run! You ladies are seriously so awesome! Thanks for the motivation :) I usually shop at Wal Mart because I love how they price match and I love their savings catcher app. I also love shopping at Sam’s Club when I need something in bulk. I almost always have lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, and then an assortment of frozen veggies. I LOVE salads, so I have to have salad ingredients on hand at all times ;)

Reply

I have broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, radishes, peppers and onions. In terms of fruit, I have strawberries.. and I just bought some grapefruit today.

I shop at Jewel, Walmart, Sam’s, Meijer, and Trader Joe’s.. and sometimes Whole Foods. I have to have everything I want–so I do go many places.

Reply

I grocery shop at Harris Teeter most often!

I always have carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms, onions, bell peppers, and tomatoes on hand for veggies. For fruits, it depends more on the season, but I love having berries & watermelon during the summer and apples & pears during the fall and winter.

I tryy to foam roll after every run, but sometimes skip it if I’m in a time crunch. It makes such a big difference, though, so I usually can make time for it :)

Reply

Bananas, strawberries, blueberries, apples, bananas + spinach, broccoli, kale.
I always have these on hand.
Love shopping at Whole Foods, Trader Joes and Ralph’s.

Love the pic of the three of you – running friends are the best!

Reply

I wish I foam rolled more than I actually do. I have it but it sits in the closet most of the time. That picture of Brooke doing it is absolutely adorable. I like to always get bananas, apples, oranges, zucchini, spinach, carrots, tomatoes, and avocados. I also get different veggies when I am in the mood. But I try not to buy food that is going to go to waste.

Reply

I usually have AT LEAST baby carrots, broccoli, cauliflower and sweet peppers at home…what else I have at homes will depend on what meals I’ve planned for the week! I shop at 3-4 different places each week – for savings and variety. I’m in Canada so some are different…Costco, Food Basics, Farm Boy and Walmart.

If everything is feeling good, I foam roll around 3 times a week…if things are getting angry, then it’s once a day, maybe twice. I do believe that you can overdo and just makes things angrier by foam rolling too much.

Reply

I love to shop at Target!

Reply

Awesome job on the long run! I try to foam roll after every run and whenever I have a kink. Find myself shopping at Sprouts mostly lately (best produce – we are spoiled in SoCal!).

Reply

I shop at Harris Teeter and Costco. I usually shop 2x per week.

I stretch each night in front of the TV and also massage/roll when I need it. Probably not nearly enough. I think it’s important to do it when you don’t feel like you need to, more of a preventative thing. It looks like you had a great 16 miler, even if it was a struggle, you still kept the same pace you usually do which is a great sign!

Reply

I usually like to have the essentials for salads – lettuce/spinach, tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers. I can also put those same veggies in a sandwich or wrap with some protein for lunch as well.

Reply

Good job on your long run!!! It is so hard to push through muddy miles…I felt that way and I only did half what you did AND I was on the treadmill! You are doing so great with your training. I bet it feels amazing that Brooke is at an age where she understands your sport and supports your training as best she can!

Reply

We always have broccoli at our house, and I usually have bananas and frozen fruit for smoothies.

We almost always go to the Stop and Shop near us, it doesn’t always have the best selection, but it’s only a half mile from our house!

I don’t foam roll as much as I should, probably a few times a week unless I have an extra sore spot, then I do it more often.

Reply

Oh man, I’m the worst at foam rolling. I don’t do it nearly as often as I should! I did 16 miles this morning and it was tough! I’m not looking forward to 18 next week. That always seems to be the hardest one for me mentally.

Reply

I always keep a bag of fresh mixed veggies, squash, mushrooms, and sweet potatoes on hand. I have been roasting veggies like crazy because it is the best thing ever!

Reply

I have never done a long run :( I’m feeling outta my league here. I usually just do 5k’s three times a week. Itsfull blown winter here so I’ve started using an indoor track so I don’t have to use my dreaded treadmill. I have never done foam rolling…maybe I don’t need it with my short runs? Anyways good on you all for ring awesome.
Raspberries, strawberries, mangos, bananas, pineapple live smoothies. Shop wherever is convenient at the time. Love Costco but it’s an hour from where I live.

Reply

At home we generally have apples, bananas, tomatoes, lettuce, onion, sweet potato, bok choy, brussel sprouts, chillies, asparagus, broccoli, strawberries, blueberries … and then a random mix of what’s in season – corn, canteloupe, mango etc.

I don’t foam roll enough!

Reply

I don’t foam roll becsuse I don’t have a foam roll at home. does it really make a huge difference in your recovery? Maybe i should invest in one.

Reply

Bananas, apples, carrots, and some kind of leafy greens are produce staples we always have around our kitchen. I do most of our shopping at Trader Joe’s, and then some at Whole Foods and another local grocery store.

Reply

I love that picture of little Brooke on the foam roller! That’s too bad about your run, but I’m sure you’ve experienced that before. Hope your next one feels better! :)

Reply

First of all, that is the cutest jacket ever! Faves: zucchini and sweet potatoes, muesli, oat milk, cashews, and dark chocolate…always in the house. Today I ran 36km in a hail and windstorm and had tired legs the whole.darn.way. BUT, my favorite bakery is 1km from the finish so that helped quite a bit.

Reply

I try to always have access to sweet potatoes, carrots, onions, broccoli, and kale. I recently tried kale sprouts at Trader Joe’s and loved em!

Reply

We usually have apples and sweet potatoes in the house at all times, but both blue and blackberries were on sale this week so those are currently in our frig! Target and Harris Teeter are our stores of choice, but I also love Trader Joe’s :) I also foam roll after every workout…I feel so much better when I do!

Reply

I love trader joes, but they don’t always have the specific things I want for a recipe. This week no problem finding brussel sprouts and grapefruit though! YUMMMYYY. ALSO I started listening to the Serial Podcast this morning on my run. I ran an extra half mile just so I could listen to the whole thing! Looks like I’m hooked :)

Reply

I’m so excited to see so many people mentioning Sprouts! We are getting one by us and I can’t wait! No Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s nearby :( I shop mainly at HyVee, which I do love, but I’ve been wanting a health food store so bad!

Reply

I’m a huge fan of foam rolling bc I don’t get sore after a long run when I foam roll….however, I have a reward system for myself. If I foam roll all the trouble spots for 10-15 mins I can relax with ice cream, read blogs, crawl into bed, etc. I find this system to be motivating ;-) the worst thing about foam rolling is I get an upper body work out from it :/

Reply

Whenever winter rolls around I stock up on brussel sprouts and kabocha squash. Idk what it is about it being cold outside, but I end up cooking those at least once or twice a week.

I need to foam roll more, but mostly I just look at it in my closet and think it is too high for me to reach.

Reply

I think my family literally went through 8 bags of skinny pop while i wad there for the holidays. So. Dang. Good.

Reply

you have such a great group of supporters

Kale is my favorite veggie! It’s always in my cart. I use my roller after every run. I probably need to foam roll some more. Love that Brooke loves to roll too. She’s going to be a fantastic runner!

so sweet that she rolls!

Is that a new Garmin I see?

Reply

I love Natural Grocers! I always have spinach and baby carrots on hand no matter what.

Reply

My son (about Brooke’s age) loves to foam roll, too! Toddlers are fun :) Oh, and we always have broccoli and bananas.

Reply

I grocery shop at wegmans– the best store ever! We’re moving this week so I’m trying to clean out our kitchen, so I have a severe lack of produce and it’s making me sad! Jealous of all your healthy stuff :)

Reply

We shop at Kroger and Trader Joe’s. And sometimes Marc’s because their Bob’s Red Mill stuff is super cheap.
Our shopping list is pretty much the same every week: apples, bananas, oranges or grapes or strawberries or watermelon (whichever is in season or on sale), spinach & romaine, green peppers, purple onions, carrots, broccoli, cherry tomatoes, wasabi peas, TJ’s greek dressing, kind bars, some kind of chocolate which is either TJ’s chocolate bars (the red ones that come 3 in a pack), Justin’s or Newman’s Own or Unreal chocolate pb cups, almond milk, frozen veggies, boca & morningstar farms burgers, Alexia potato puffs, and chobani. And ALWAYS a couple pizza’s for the freezer for those “spur of the moment dinners”. :)

Reply

Look at all of those fresh foods- yum!

Reply

I lent my brother my foam roller on Sunday and my two year old cried when he saw it leave the house. Ha!

Reply

I really like shopping at winco (love their bulk). I just went to a local place called Rancho Market, they had a lot of good deals on produce.

I try and foam roll every day! I work on concrete floors every day so it really takes a toll on my body!
