What I eat before a workout and some tangents.

One thing I get asked a lot is about what I eat before a workout.  Get ready for a very in-depth answer;)

If I am running early (at like 5 and we are doing 10 or less miles)—>  Nothing.  It is usually too early for me to even process what I am about to do let alone think about eating.

If I am running early and we are doing a tough workout/speed work/10+ miles then I plan ahead and have a banana in my car ready for me to eat on the way to the workout.

If I am running a little bit later in the morning then I have a yogurt or banana or toast when I first wake up at around 7.

If I am going to a pump class or spin class and running a few miles after then I have an egg with cheese on top on some squaw bread (like this morning!!) about an hour before the class.

I have real breakfast right after finishing my workouts and it usually involves oatmeal, yogurt creation, cereal or an omelet these days.

If it is Sunday morning, I am having chocolate chip pancakes with Brooke.

I woke up Sunday morning to a text from my brother that lives in Kentucky and all it had was this picture.  This was probably the best way to start off my day.

IMG 0120

As you know, I go through phases and become really obsessed with something for a few weeks and then move on to the next thing.  Lately, I can’t obtain enough candles.  This is my current favorite and I light it every single day.

IMG 0129

I can’t even put into words how happy it makes me that Brooke loves to bake with me.  I am liking this 2.3 years old stage.

IMG 0133

Some people have asked about where I got Brooke’s parrot sweater from—>  I have been getting a lot of her stuff from HELLO SPARROW because I am in love with everything that they make.  I love their unique designs and prints and everything is super soft and durable.

IMG 0087

Ashley Olsen out for her run in a button up shirt.  I would probably chafe to death if I attempted such a thing.

IMG 0044

I am very upset at my sister for giving me one of these cookies because now I will not be able to even drive by this place without stopping to get one.

IMG 0137

Loved Laura’s instagram quote the other day!

IMG 0124

This was my afternoon snack today.  I am just hoping that the nutrients in my baked sweet potato cancel out the diet coke.  Every now and then, I just need a lil’ caffeine.

My food of choice before a workout is much like yours – complicated. It just depends on what I’m doing, when I’m working out, am I running or cross training, how long has it been since I ate, etc. There’s just no easy answer.

Snack today – half of a Dove milk chocolate bar. Healthy, no. Delicious, yes!

I do not understand those Olsen twins. That looks like the most uncomfortable thing ever. I hate it when I have to run more than a few steps when I’m in jeans. Its terrible, yet somehow, her outfit seems worse.

I currently cannot use my left foot. Some muscle in there decided to give out and I can’t actually lift my foot up. It will point just fine. Always a good thing when you have a marathon in less than a week! :)

Reply

Ummmm I am very concerned about your left foot. That is crazy! Sending healing vibes your way, gotta get to that starting line healthy!

I was squatting down for hours yesterday pulling out carpet staples (I highly recommend hiring someone to do this, it isn’t fun) and haven’t been able to pull my toes up for almost 24 hours now. Not great timing, but surely it’ll be better by Sunday. Right?!

Epsom salt bath
or
contrast therapy

May or may not have been in same shape before a race and had to do this

Reply

I’ll try anything! What is contrast therapy?

Reply

Cold water 4 minutes
Hot water 3 minutes
Cold water 3 minutes
Hot water 2 minutes
Cold water 2 minutes
Hot water 1 minute
Cold water 1 minute
Always end with cold water
I put ice in my mop bucket, set on the side of the tub and fill the tub with fairly warm/hot water with 2 cups Epsom salts. Always end with ice. I had a 3rd degree sprain in April (just weeks before a half) and a possible torn lower leg tendon while training for an October half. I ran the half in October and have not been able to do squat since. Just got out of a boot yesterday and getting laser therapy. I do believe in Epsom salt baths (2/3 times a week) and this contrast therapy works like a charm for me. You can google it too. It was suggested by an orthopaedic doctor when I sprained my ankle.

Reply

Adjust to your tolerance level as 4 minutes in ice is tough.

Reply

Thank you! I’ll try it! Hope you get better soon! The boot is no fun!

Reply

I was released from the boot yesterday and given permission to get in the pool and do upper body if I want.
Getting my things together to head to the gym right now. Since I run to burn off the crazy and I haven’t ran in over two weeks I am a little crazy and need to break a sweat in another way other than a hot flash. Good luck and listen to your body but remember you can do hard things.

Reply

I always run really early in the morning.
Even for runs under 10 miles, I try to eat a few bites of a Picky Bar.
For over 10 miles or a tough track workout, I’ll eat a gu beforehand and some Picky Bar.
Today’s snack…popcorn!

Reply

I still have not tried Picky Bars… I need to get on that ASAP!

Reply

Picky Bars are AMAZING! I got a sample back when I ordered the new Believe Training Journal and now I’m totally hooked! Plus Lauren Fleshman is the coolest.

Reply

Yes, she is! :)

Reply

I am such a fan/dork about supporting Picky Bars and Oiselle! I love their goals and mission. And I have a girl crush on Lauren Fleshman and Steph Bruce!

Reply

I don’t like to eat before an early morning run either, although lately I’ve been having a little coffee which has been helping with energy levels a ton. Otherwise, oatmeal seems to be the best thing to eat for breakfast if I have some time to digest. It’s a tricky balance!

Reply

I always workout at early o’clock so I either eat a banana or nothing. If I know the workout is going to be really tough, or I’m running a little longer, I throw some almond butter on the banana. Then I come home and have real breakfast!

Reply

Ashley Olsen – Why would you run in that? So strange.

Tangent – I’ve been trying for a decade to get my husband to wear casual shoes instead of just running shoes all the time (not that I don’t love kickin’ around in my sneakers, but sometimes you need a medium between that and being dressed up.) His answer was always that he wouldn’t because what if he suddenly needed to run somewhere? Well, last month he was driving down the road and saw someone on his bike, that he didn’t yet know had been stolen right out of our garage the night before, but it’s a pretty distinctive bike. Anyway, since he was wearing his running shoes he was able to chase after the guy. No, he didn’t catch him, but one of his cycling team buddies drove past my husband running after the guy and followed him in the car as far as he could and later saw the guy walking down the street. My husband was able to recover his bike because they had a great idea of where the thief abandoned it.

I’ll never be able to get him to wear casual, non running, shoes. (Though I’m really glad he got his bike back! We have more $$ in bikes in our garage than in cars!)

Reply

HAHAHA your tangent is the best tangent ever. I like the way your husband thinks… you never know when you need to RUN! So happy you guys got your bike back!

Reply

I love this. :) I always keep a spare pair (with socks!) in my trunk in case my car breaks down and I need to run somewhere.

On another tangent, I heard a country song the other day and the lyrics were something about his car breaking down outside of town and he ran ten miles to get to her. I thought, “ten miles?!” What kind of romantic gesture is that? I want my man to run a marathon to get to me. No, an ultra! ;)

Reply

Oh how I LOVE squaw bread. I have it about every day. But never tried it with an egg on top..will have to try that tomorrow!

Reply

It really is the best bread ever! Let me know what you think:)

Reply

Why in the world is Ashley wearing that to run?! I shouldn’t judge, maybe she cannot afford a moisture wicking top ;-) Hah! So weird!

The most uncomfortable thing I ever ran in was a sports bra that chafed me for about 10 miles. The shower afterwards was PURE TORTURE. I thew that bra out immediately!

Reply

Hi Janae, love this post about food ideas. It got me thinking… it’d be great to see posts on other logistic-y things. For example, I’d love to hear how you handle childcare while you work out. We are hoping to have our first baby in the next year, and I’m nervous about how I’ll get workouts in with a little one! I’d love any advice.

Reply

HEY KATIE!! Congrats on your first baby on the way! My situation is a little different now but this is basically how it works–> If I am running super early, then we just sleep at my mom’s house and I get home before she wakes up. I run a lot on the treadmill now or my mom/sister/a good friend watches Brooke while I go to a class at the gym or go running outside! I am lucky to have so much help so that I can still work out! Good luck Katie!

Reply

If I run in the early morning I usually don’t eat more than a banana, like you, if anything at all. On long run weekends I always eat at least a banana, but occasionally a piece of toast or oatmeal. Sometimes I’m nervous before runs, and I can’t handle anything more than that.

I can’t believe she is running in the shirt! Haha, I just think if I had her money, I’d be running in Lululemon EVERYDAY!

Tangent – I’m considering buying one of the Jillian Michael’s DVDs to work on getting my belly toned. Thoughts?! I know you used to do her workouts a lot. I’m a little worried they’ll be WAY too hard and I’ll get discouraged.

Reply

Hey Natalie! I love the 30 Day Shred and she shows you different levels of difficulty for each move which is helpful! I love how they are sweet and super effective! Good luck, you can do it!

Reply

I usually do a strength training workout in the middle of the day. I almost always eat greek yogurt with some oats or cereal mixed in before I work out. I am starting to get back into running and I am thinking I will need to lighten up my snack a bit. Thanks for the ideas!

Reply

Have you put Justin’s maple or vanilla almond butter on sweet potatoes yet? I promise you.. it is LIFE CHANGING!

Reply

I need to try that NOW!! Thanks Hannah!

Reply

My before-workout eats definitely change based on what I am doing but it is most often nothing. It’s terrible but I usually get to the gym at about 5:30 and like you, I just can’t even think about eating at that hour. If it is a looooong run (12+ miles) I will have a banana and Clif bar. If it is a swim or spin, something that won’t make my stomach so sensitive to food, I have a banana.

Walnuts and dates as my snack. YUM.

The latest uncomfortable thing is my HR monitor – it slices my chest every time and I have a super painful scab there now! Haha.

Tangent: I am going to the Habs game tonight here in Edmonton and I am SO EXCITED!!

Reply

Have so much fun tonight! Yes… HR monitors are super uncomfortable to me too!

Reply

Go to REI and ask them for their white climbing tape. I put about a 2 inch strip right in the middle of my chest where it usually chafes and it works miracles!

Reply

Tangent: I was in the office kitchen with another employee, mentioned that the boss had brought in donuts and there were still some on my desk. She was heating up her lunch – eating late at 200 – at said that should felt she should eat lunch before having dessert. I told you, “You’re an adult.” She thought for a sec, and said “You’re totally right, I’m having a donut before lunch.”

Reply

That is one GIANT stuffed potato!

Reply

I can’t eat before I run. Even before a half I force myself to drink about a third of a protein shake and that’s all I can handle. I should try something during a long run, but am too afraid! :)

Tangent- I convinced my family to go cheer on a friend at the finish line of the Marine Corps Marathon yesterday and it was awesome! We were in the last half mile, which is uphill, and it was amazing to watch how determined those runners are!

Reply

I MUST eat before I run, no matter how early. I wake up starving and can’t run on an empty stomach. Usually a small bowl of oatmeal with fruit (berries or half banana) with some peanut butter. And then I eat a second breakfast as soon as I get back!

Reply

I never eat before I workout at 5am. It’s hard enough getting up early just to workout. There’s no way my brain could process getting up even earlier to eat. I need sleep more than fuel. If I’m working out later aka 7 or 8, then I have scrambled eggs white on eziekel english muffin with tons of sriarcha. I just discovered them and they are holly yum!

Reply

I have to eat before a run. Low blood sugar? Not sure. I usually like protein drink with fruit. Banana pancakes are awesome if it’s not too early. Sometimes I grab a banana and squeeze some Chocolate Hazelnut butter packet from Justin’s. Usually that’s just for a long run or when I’m running a relay.

Reply

Love the quote. It sort of describes my life this year. After a very bad string of relationships that didn’t work out and my finally coming to terms with the fact that I might not get to fall in love again (first love died of cancer many years ago) I met someone earlier this year and slowly things fell into place. I can see so clearly why the others didn’t work out. They fell apart so that the right situation could fall together. :) #overthemoon

I didn’t workout today but I usually have a dry waffle or toast with butter before a run.
My snack today was a delicious cupcake. We celebrated my birthday at the office. :)

Reply

Most mornings I start my exercise by 5am, so, like you, I don’t really want to eat anything. My only exception is when I’m doing a long run (probably over 15km), and I’ll try to have an English muffin with vegemite … yeah, I’m Aussie :)

Reply

If I am with it enough in the morning before an early workout then I will have a banana. That’s about it. I will try to have a nice dose of carbs + protein afterwards. Side note: what is up with the Olsen twins? Who would run in that? I agree with you…. chafe city.

Reply

I eat a banana or a piece of toast on the way to the gym. I need something but I can’t have anything too heavy.

Reply

I used to hate having digesting food in my stomach when working out. I could not eat within an hour or so of working out. This past week, though, I’ve started a low-volume, high-intensity rowing plan and just eat whatever, whenever. It’s still too new to know what will work best.

Reply

My eating is complicated as well based on timing, distance, etc. Usually it’s just a few bites of a Luna Bar. But on 10+ training runs, I will usually eat a frozen pancake or waffle with honey.

I’m hoping that shirt Ashley Olsen is wearing is at least her brand. Otherwise, there’s no reason/excuse. I had a pair of shorts that didn’t stay in place. Didn’t realize how much damage was done until I got in the shower. Ouch.

Tangent: Not running my originally scheduled marathon this weekend because my training partner is injured and it doesn’t make sense to fly out to the East Coast, etc. (I was running it with/for her as part of her goal of 50 marathons/50 states). So, looked to see if I might find a local marathon in the next few weeks to take advantage of my training. There are 3! within two hours of me this weekend. Morgan Hill Marathon, it is.

Reply

Anything small and carb-y is perfect before most runs for me!
My snack today was a honey crisp apple and some pineapple. So delicious.

Reply

My go to breakfast before runs is a half bagel with a little cream cheese. Sometimes I dress it with sliced almonds and dried cranberries. I don’t really think about what I’m eating before other workouts because they are usually spontaneous.

I want that baked sweet potato. It looks so delicious.

Reply

Usually toast and almond butter before a run for me, but lately I have been thinking about making the switch back to just coffee before the run and eating breakfast after, because I have been eating 2 breakfasts lately and I don’t think it’s really the best thing. Eh.

Reply

I generally eat banana + pb before any workout! If it’s a race I’ll eat it with toast, if it’s just a regular run I’ll go without. If a race isn’t until later I’ll eat oatmeal! I had a madagascar vanilla kind bar and some dry roasted edamame for a snack today! Then a piece of banana bread from my friend because who says no to banana bread?!

Reply

Chickfila cookies are THE BEST chocolate chip cookie in my opinion!!

Reply

If I’m running in the morning I pretty much always have an English muffin with peanut butter. It works, so I don’t mess with it.

If I’m running later in the day I just make sure I wait a decent amount of time after I eat and I’m usually good to go.

My snack today was an apple toffee oatmeal raisin cookie.

Tangent: my boyfriend and I might be buying a franchise that works with kids and I’m super excited/really freaked out about it.

Reply

If I’m doing a training run longer than 18 miles I’ll have a banana before hand. Of course if it’s a marathon then it’s a different story. But most I workout at 5a and like you and most of the other girls I can barely function or get out the door. Food is the last thing on my mind.

baking candy corn and white chip cookies tonight. I can’t wait!

Reply

I am a creature of habit when it comes to food and running. I always have a cup of coffee, scoop of peanut butter, and banana before longer runs. If I am doing a shorter run I will have a lemon luna bar. My fave!

The most uncomfortable thing I have ever ran is was a garbage bag. Don’t ask. :)

Reply

Bananas are my favorite pre run food. If I am doing an easy run I usually don’t eat anything. Longer runs and harder runs usually a banana or sometimes a honey stinger waffle. I’ve also been trying eggs before my long run and that’s gone well so far! My morning snack today was a pear and afternoon snack was trail mix (almonds, cashews, and raisins). I have been eating sweet potatoes for almost every meal lately!

Reply

Hi there! I would have a very in-depth answer of the eating before workout question as well, but these days all of my workouts seem to take place in the evening, so it’s easy. I eat a bowl of cottage cheese with nuts and an apple about 1.5 hours before my workout. If I work out first thing in the morning, I’ll have a small Greek yogurt, because I cannot work out on an empty stomach. Nonetheless, I always like to have some food in my belly and sometimes will rely on protein bars in a pinch. Happy Monday to you:)

Reply

I’m glad I’m not the only one on a candle kick. Just stocked up at Bath &Body Works. My absolute fave…. Toasted Marshmallow from Bath & Body Works. Go get one now. Then go back the next day and get 6 more because it’s seasonal and you’ll burn through them even before Christmas arrives.

Reply

One time I ran in shorts that kept riding up and it was really a tragic scene for 12 miles.

Reply

Snack today was string cheese, an apple and some almonds. I have been so hungry since yesterday’s marathon but also so tired. Basically just grabbing whatever I can and shoveling it in. Also I wake up so hungry, I always have to eat something like as soon as I get up. Funnily, this early morning hunger disappears during taper/ recovery?! who’d have thought haha.

I think adidas makes the MOST comfortable running shorts. They are light and loose in the legs but stay fitted in the waist. LOVE em.

Love Brooke’s sweatshirt. Wish I could have it in adult size!

Reply

I have tummy troubles, I don’t like to eat before hand either, but then I bomb out when the mileage gets higher

Reply

I am in a total minority in that I always eat before I work out — no matter what workout — and it’s kind of a lot: 2 eggs, toast, apple, banana, coffee w/ a cup of almond milk! And then I go running, walking, swimming, cycling or whatever. I guess I just have just trained my body to be able to handle it because there is no way I could go without any fuel.

You should see me on days I have to do a fasting blood draw. I am kind of a baby about it….

I have no words for that picture of her running in a button down shirt….
(???)

Reply

I definitely eat before I workout. Since my workouts vary in times it can be breakfast or lunch. If it’s more than an hour after a meal I make a quick protein shake. I totally get hangry so I’m one of those eat every 3 hour folks.

Reply

my snack today was dried mango from trader joe’s– SO GOOD.

Reply

Peanut butter and/or a banana is my go-to pre workout snack. Always have a big breakfast after…refueling is the best :) Also, I believe the huge sweet potatoes I eat at dinner cancel out the chocolate I eat after.

Reply

I usually eat a banana or 2 when i run in the morning… or nothing at all if it’s a short run like 3-4 miles. sometimes nothing at all if it’s 10 miles, but always try for a couple bananas before a long run. if it’s in the evening, i try to stick with as much fruit as a i can throughout the day as the i don’t want anything heavy in my stomach when i run. Smoothies are probably my favorite post-run snack/meal for sure!! :)

my snack today was banana-strawberry-beet smoothie :)

Reply

Thank you for sharing that quote. That’s the motto I’ve been trying to live by lately and I was just thinking about how things seem to be looking up so it was interesting to come across that quote on your blog. :)

Reply

I don’t normally eat before I run (so worried about having tummy issues and needing a bathroom). I’ve only done 1 half so far ( and I didn’t eat before that race either). Once I start gearing up to my full marathon training I will have to try and test different fuel strategies.

Tangent: The highlight of my daughter’s week is when we get Chick-fil-A for an after school snack….I think she might be addicted….which makes me her dealer doesn’t it? It’s soooooo good though!

Reply

What I eat before a workout normally depends on how much time my stomach will get to digest it before I run! If I’m running in the next fifteen minutes, I’ll normally have nothing or maybe a date but if I’m running in a couple of hours I use it as an excuse to have a huge carby breakfast :)

Reply

Lately I have been drinking coconut water on my early morning runs. It’s my new secret weapon. For my long runs, I’ve been eating Applegate hot dogs – it sounds so gross now that I typed it out!

Reply

Man today I was swamped at work all I could do was snack on one See’s chocolate. My feet are beyond exhausted. Before a long run though I really try to eat a banana. But for short runs I don’t eat anything. I will usually have a protein filled breakfast afterwards.

Reply

It took years for me to be able to eat before running. Now I like to have oatmeal with fruit, nuts, and a dash of Greek yogurt before a long run. Otherwise, I usually do a banana with almond butter or a piece of toast. For ridiculously early runs I have either a banana or clif bar on my way out the door.

Reply

What is squaw bread?!

Reply

Chick fil a cookies are hands down the best ever. On valentines day they give one to every customer for free…so be prepared for that!

Reply

Get the anthropologie Capri blue candle in a jar (volcano scent). Won’t regret the purchase-promise!!

Reply

I do the same thing with food before running. Seems to work and I love coming home and making a big breakfast!

Reply

I eat many different foods before I run, but today I had sourdough bread and jam with a hard-boiled egg. Pancakes are one of my favorites and having them on Sundays is something I like to do, too!

Reply

I usually do a 4am boot camp, so no food before that! If I’m working out at 8am or later, I will do something light (banana) beforehand. Otherwise, I eat a full breakfast within an hour of finishing my workout.

I had a frozen banana and a pumpkin chocolate chip muffin for a snack.

I don’t necessarily remember the most uncomfortable thing I’ve run in, but I do remember that time that my underwear chafed me. Oy.

Reply

I don’t eat anything before my runs either for the most part. I got into a bad habit of not eating anything before weekend long runs during marathon training but luckily still ate before the actual race! I’m always paranoid about stomach issues but a banana + pb + toast seems to work well!

Reply

I usually eat a little of my homemade granola with some milk before my long runs, plus a few sips of coffee. Its been working so well for my training that I think on race day (3 weeks till half marathon!) I’ll eat it too just so I don’t jinx myself ;-)

Most uncomfortable thing I have worn while running were those very popular Soffee shorts while running HS Cross Country – what was I thinking? Chafe city.

Tangent: I work as a Product Development Chemist (sounds fancy but it really isn’t). I was in a coworker’s lab and chit chatting about our new sample request process for customers, when another coworker walks in with a CHOCOLATE-CHOCOLATE cupcake. That’s chocolate cake WITH chocolate icing. Literally, mid sentence about the sample request process I run out of the lab to snatch a cupcake. When I get there there are 4 cup cakes – yellow with LIGHT BLUE icing. I literally gagged and turned down the cupcakes. I DON’T do colored icing – its weird. Seeing that blue literally ended my cupcake craving. Silver lining: I saved 300+ calories :D

Have a great day Janae!

Reply

Haha! I love that the candle fragrance is “Fire”. Very inventive. Lol…

Reply

Like you-it really depends on what time of day it is. Bananas are always a good option though!
My snack was apple cobbler! Not very nutritious, but it’s good apples, right?
I used to run in cotton shirts and shorts. Chafing all over and so much sweat!
Random tangent: When I have children, I hope they are half as fashionable as Brooke is. She’s gonna have to start her own fashion blog!

Reply

I don’t eat before I run, unless it’s a race. I need a good 3-4 hours to process any real food. If I’m dong a long run, I end up taking a Gu right before I start or early on in the first few miles to get something in my stomach.

I do crossfit and I always eat a granola bar or energy bite in the morning before class. I feel shaky lifting weights if I don’t!

Reply

Well…I wake up hungry pretty much 100% of the time. But I don’t eat unless I know that it’s going to be a long run or workout. If that is the case, I usually eat either a banana smothered in almond butter or a toasted waffle almond butter sandwich (for REALLY long runs)

Any tangents to share?
I’m on day three of a rest week. I’ve ran 3 marathons + 1 half in just over four weeks. This was the end of a pretty intense racing season (for me). My husband pretty much demanded that I take a week off all exercise….I think he just wanted more happy hour dates….but I’m going a little crazy to be honest. I watched over an hour of trail running videos and I want to lace up! BUT….I know this is good for me yada yada yada :)

Reply

My pre-run eating is very similar to yours. The biggest mistake I make with running is going for a later-in-the-day run (during nap time) too soon after eating. I always regret that yet I do it over and over again!!!

I still haven’t been to Chik-fil-a but hope to this winter! Especially for a cookie like that :)

Reply

Brooke is adorable – seriously, her braids and the baking … ugh, my heart is melting <3 (Just like the choco chips in your pancakes ;) )

I love the clothes on the site you mentioned- I’ll be forwarding it to my mom friends ASAP!
