Time to TAPER! 22.1. And a running question for my friend Jess.

I was planning on running 20 miles today but I also always love to get a 22 miler under my belt when training for a marathon.  When I hit 20 miles this morning I still felt pretty good and decided that 22.1 would be a fun way to end.  8:20 average pace (but we always pause our gamins for drink breaks/lights/random breaks).

This is our favorite drinking fountain in the world.  I don’t know what it is about this water but it is so incredibly refreshing.

Blurry pic but it shows that fall is here.

I have missed my training partners so much and so I loved spending the morning with them.  As we passed a flag that was at half-staff we talked about where we were and how we felt on September 11th.  Never Forget.

And the best reward after a long run.

IMG 7772

Today’s run was definitely a confidence booster for my upcoming marathon.  This has been an extremely short training cycle and I have been worried about not having enough endurance built up by race day but after today, I feel real good about it all.

You know you had a good day together when you have four stamps and a sticker from all of your activities.

IMG 7795

I don’t want her to leave tomorrow but I am just going to have to put on my big girl panties and be okay with it.

Had a huge breakfast when I got home from my run and then I was craving a bowl of nutrients (and a cookie) for lunch.  Winner:

So my friend (the one I always trail run with) just found out she has to have surgery.  She has lateral compression syndrome with chondrosis and so they have to go in and clean up the meniscus.  They may also have to stretch out the tendon too…

I wanted to ask you guys if any of you have had this before?  How did it go?  How was recovery?  How is your running now?

Ever had surgery on anything?

Do you pause your garmin when you take a water break/stop lights etc?

I am absolutely a garmin pauser. . . always!! But I do admit that I have regretted it at times during race day when those darn race people don’t pause the timer for me!

PS: sending your friend good vibes for the surgery!

If it’s going to be a very short stop, I don’t pause my garmin, if it’ll be a little longer, then yes, for sure. Sometimes I forget to turn it back on, that’s a pain.

I have had two surgeries. A septoplasty to straighten my septum and a nissen fundoplication – basically they tied part of my stomach around my esophagus because I didn’t have a valve stopping the acid from going up my esophagus. Neither was fun, but necessary. Good luck to your friend, I’m sure everything will go well and she’ll be back to it in no time!

BTW…you two look like you’re running in different weather. Tank and shorts on you, long sleeves on her!

Oh my goodness… those surgeries sound awful!

HAHAHA yes… I overheat very quickly so I strip down:)

Sometimes I forget to turn my Garmin back on too. It’s always such a bummer when I realize it! I have also forgotten to turn it off at the end of a run too which is almost as bad, especially when timing a race!

I’ve had various surgeries on my nose, ankle, and teeth, but nothing serious, thankfully. I do remember getting the laughing gas, and the nurse at one point said, “You’re going to start laughing now.” And then I did, but I don’t know if it was because of the gas or because she said I would.

Ahh fall already! I can’t wait to go up one of the canyons and take it all in. Utah knows how to do fall the best!
Awesome 22 miles…Ive never done more than 20!
Surgery: I had my twins via c section. I remember being so scared that I’d feel them cutting me so I had them make doubly sure I was numb enough!

I always paise my garmin on training runs during stops, but I do my best not to linger. Congrats on a strong long run!!!

I’ve never had surgery but a friend just had meniscus surgery and she came back stronger than ever!! Her surgery was inuna few months ago and she already raced in two triathlons and won the first and was second in the other!! I have my Garmin set to auto pause when I stop. I like to know what my actual run average is because I won’t be stopping during a race so I feel that pausing it gives a more accurate reading. Great job on your run! My neighborhood has a water fountain but I really wish there were others around town!

Reply

Oh no! I feel so bad for your running buddy! I’ve never had any major surgery, but I can imagine how tough it must be, especially to not be able to run for awhile!

I’m definitely a Garmin pauser. On certain runs I’ll use as a race day trial and I drink my water really quickly and won’t pause just to get an idea of what I’ll be dealing with on race day.

Reply

I never hit pause when I randomly stop for the bathroom or water or whatever. For me it just doesn’t matter much either way so long as I get back out there and finish up the run lol…Wishing your friend well with her surgery!

Or theres one thing i hate is pausing whatever tracking system I’m using! I feel illegitimate doing that.

I had ACL repair surgery last spring, which is pretty much a bummer of a knee surgery. I was a marathoner and downhill skier before and worried I would A. never be able to run or ski again without pain and B. never be able to regain my fitness level and get back marathoning (or just that it would be REALLY hard). Long story short, after counting down the days till I could finally run again (4 months for me, different for everyone), I hopped on that treadmill, ran for 12 glorious minutes and remembered why I loved it in the first place. Its definitely NOT been an easy recovery, there’s a lot of pain and tears and frustration, but I’m back to running 6-7 miles at a stretch and am aiming for a marathon in December 2014. The one thing that really got me through my recovery was loyal and loving friends who came over and cared for me, watched terrible television with me, hugged me and were just generally awesome. Tell her to hang in there, keep smiling and laughing and she’ll be back at it and tougher than ever!

Do you run 22 miles on an empty stomach??

Reply

No way!!!!

Reply

Mine Garmin is set to autopause, so if it’s too long, it does it on its own. and I’m ok with it :)

Good luck to your friend!! Sending her heathy vibes!

I tore my meniscus in several places and had to have it cleaned up. Recovery was not bad, just a little frustrating because they want you moving and active and back to normal as soon as possible but it’s hard to do with a limited range of motion. So I could do strength training classes but I couldn’t walk around Target. A little frustrating but it was a very proactive process. Good luck to her, I’m sure she will be fine!

22.1, awesome! I will usually pause my Garmin for water breaks and to force down some gels. I have a hard time eating gels while running. Results in a huge sticky mess :) I have a 20 miler on Saturday but I have been thinking about making it 22 as well! We’ll see how it goes.

Happy 22.1 miles!
Proud of you.
Chatted during prep to my running co-worker about you. You have a speedy running partner whenever you make the trip. :)

Congrats on your 22 miler, that’s awesome! Always, always pause whenever I have to stop to drink water/refuel – guess it’s just the perfectionist in me!

Best wishes for your trail running buddy. Luckily, I’ve never had to have surgery which makes it seem extra scary.

If I’m running by myself I usually pause my Bia (http://store.bia-sport.com/), because I get very caught up in my average per mile. But when I’m running with a friend, I usually don’t because I just care more about knowing my pace at any given moment and how far we’ve run vs. my final overall time (and I know I’ll forget to turn it back on because I’m “socializing”).

I like your friend’s vest. Is it strictly a safety thing or does it have pockets or other functionality? I have a Brooke’s vest that I like with pockets. But it sometimes gets too warm.

Reply

I don’t ever pause my garmin because I refuse to stop during a run, haha! I guess I do stop it if there’s a light though. What do you have for breakfast after a long run?!

Reply

I do pause my Garmin and forgot this fact when I checked my official time in my half a few weeks back and it was LONGER than my watch! Duh.

Reply

I do pause my garmin! I feel like it’s unfair when I have to stop for a
Minute or more and I have been doing really well,
Not cool traffic!!!

Reply

You bet I pause my Garmin…but I only really stop during longer runs and I try not to stop long…I also pause it if I take a walk break (probably cheating but oh well). Do you eat anything before your long run…here is why I ask. I usually don’t eat if I run in the AM because it is so early…even my last 18 miler I just had a handful of cheerios before I left and I was fine…well for my 1/2 a few days ago I decided to try to do it right and try something different (never try something new race day, why don’t I listen to myself)!!!!!!! So I had a banana, piece of toast and a gel before the race…ugh my stomach hated me!…it was also crazy hot so that could have contributed. So just curious :)

Reply

I pause my Garmin for lights/traffic, other than that I don’t stop.

I’ve never had surgery, but if I was smart I would get a MRI and have the surgery that the surgeon is very sure that I need for a torn labrum. But, I’m a baby and am avoiding it for a along as possible. Good luck to your friend and I hope she heals quickly and as pain free as possible!

Good luck this weekend, I hope it flies by and Brooke is back in your arms!

Reply

Does LASIK count as surgery? If so, then yes. It was pretty easy though and not much in the way of rehabbing except trying not to touch your eyes for a while. I do pause my garmin but I always wonder if I should because taking the break gives me time to rest which means I can probably sustain the run or pace a while longer so is that really representative of my fitness level??

Reply

You look a bit lean and strong in that picture. All that training must be paying off be sure to eat plenty before the Marathon. I suspect you do not want to go into it too low on fuel, especially since you run such quality races.
You are an inspiration with all the hard work.

Reply

I always pause my Garmin when I take breaks. I don’t typically take many breaks (I just want to get it done!) but at lights and stuff I’ll hit pause.
I have never heard of that surgery before but I did have surgery on my hip about 4 years ago. I hope your friend has a speedy recovery!!

I do pause my Garmin for long breaks but not for quick short ones. The more I pause it, the more likely I am to forgot to restart it!!

Good luck to your friend, she will definitely come out stronger and faster!

I used to have my garmin set on auto pause. Then I ran the SF marathon and when I crossed the finish line and hit stop I thought I had PR’d by two seconds! Lol, I was so excited cause SF was a much tougher course than my previous. Anyways, when my sister checked my official results, I had not PR’d after all, I was off by 38 measly seconds. Yep, my auto pause had stopped a few times when I hit some aid stations and stopped to drink. Now I don’t use that function anymore, I’m afraid I will forget to turn it off again for a race.

Hang in there and do something fun tomorrow! Awesome on your long run!
Praying I never get injured that surgery sounds serious. I’m a baby.

Congratulations on your 22 miler! Having never run a marathon, I can only imagine how much of a confidence booster that must be to have a long training run like that that feels so good!
I always thought that I if/when I ran a marathon, I would want my longest run to be closer to 26 miles than many people do.

So sorry for your friend, my best wishes to her, that is just plain no fun.

I have never had surgery, but I hope that your friend heals quickly!

Congrats on the 22-miler! You are awesome!!! I am sure once I get to 20 this weekend I will just collapse on the ground and not want to go another step :)

I do pause my Garmin when I am getting a water break/going to the bathroom during training runs, but I don’t on race day. I probably should not do it during training either because it definitely gives me the freedom to linger a little longer before I start up again.

I always remember to pause my Garmin for breaks but it never fails that I ALWAYS forget to turn it back on. FAIL!

I pause my garmin…if I am tracking how long I run by minutes then if I am not running I shouldn’t have it going.

I had knee surgery my senior year of high school. I had dislocated my knee cap and overstretched my patellar tendon and torn a bunch of cartilage while doing so. I followed my rehab instructions to a T and was back to working out and running after only 3 months. Now it never hurts! The most important thing is to follow instructions and work your way back in only when your body is ready.

I’ve had my ACL repaired twice! What a mess I am, but I still run (straight lines and preferably even ground :))

Yes to pausing the Garmin! Stay strong this weekend Janae and way to go on that 22.1 miler! BEAST.

One of my best girlfriends had surgery on her meniscus back in March and she had a great recovery – back to normal activity by July. Keeping your friend and her surgery in my prayers!
I always pause my Garmin during water breaks and stop lights. It makes me feel better to read here that you and so many other runners do the same!

I actually just had surgery on Friday for endometriosis/infertility. It’s been a tough recovery so far but I’m almost back to feeling halfway decent. Def have missed running this past week, I couldn’t imagine not running for months like those of you that have had knee surgery. My doctor said no exercise for two weeks and I nearly fell over. Oh well, it’s all for a good cause, hoping and praying for a healthy baby in 2015.

I ran up the canyon a week again and it is so BEAUTIFUL! And that drinking fountain does have the best water!

Girl…it is time for you to shine in a few weeks! You will be awesome. You will be strong and powerful. You will be unlimited.

I haven’t had the surgery myself but I actually work in the OR and I have seen a ton of them done. It’s a relatively minor surgery as far as the actual procedure goes, and recovery is definitely a lot quicker than joint surgery or anything bigger. I would say the most important things for your friend to do are:

1) Research your surgeon. There is a huge difference in outcomes between OK surgeons and great surgeons. Ask around, do some homework, and don’t just find a guy that does the procedure, find THE guy. Ask friends who work in healthcare and they will have a reference for you.
2) Give the PT everything you’ve got. Physical therapy is so incredibly important in returning to function. Follow the exercises to a T, and don’t try to come back before you get the OK from your PT. I believe in them so much and it seems to be the make-or-break factor in recovering from those procedures.

Best of luck to her!

I pause the Garmin if i’m stopping at a water fountain and at lights. Other than that, I just walk while I’m drinking or eating…

ACL reconstructive surgery 2.5 years ago. Really sucked as I was training for my first full marathon. But it all worked out in the end – ran my first full in April and currently training for Chicago. I agree that she will end up stronger in the end, that she will discover more about herself, that she might discover other activities that bring her joy as a result (I ended up starting yoga and swimming – these activities make me happy and more well rounded). Someone mentioned taking the PT seriously – great advice. I suspect she will work hard to recover.
Pausing the Garmin? Absolutely.

Your fall photo makes me miss fall back in New England! This is my first year in California and while there are some leaves changing in Berkeley, it’s weird – a) it’s not all of them, and b) most of them just stay on the trees! It looks pretty but it’s nothing like home.

Reply

I don’t use a garmin but I do pause my running app at stoplights (not for water breaks…I normally incorporate the water breaks into the “walk” portion of my run:walk:run intervals).

I’m praying that all goes well with the surgery for your friend.

Reply

I always pause my garmin! When I train I love to keep track of about every stat I can with each run, so I would hate for a walk or drink break to interfere ;)

Sending strength for your weekend without Brooke. I recommend spending some time with all of your family and friends. Get your nails done.

I had surgery to replace my ACL using one of my hamstrings (after tearing it during indoor soccer), and they cleaned up my menisucus when they were in there, as well. Recovery was long – six months – and following my physio guide was a must. I’m running my first marathon (ever) in October, two years after surgery, but I ran a half about nine months after surgery.

Good luck to your friend!

I understand your friend’s pain. I tore my MCL playing kickball the other day and I have to have surgery now. It is heartbreaking watching other people run past my window knowing I can’t for now. Time heals everything, right? We runners are strong – because we have the mental endurance to run marathons, we have the mental endurance to deal with hard things.

Totally KNEW you had those miles in the bag…and girl, you did EVEN better. Look at you- you are my running inspiration!!! I had the tendon on my right hip lengthened on July 10, 2014. Originally I was going in for surgery to repair the massive amounts of soft tissue damage, my pretty much non-existant labrum and shave off a bunch of abnormal bone that had grown on my femur and the hip socket (I know, I know … I have a crazy messed up hip). But when my surgeon went in he found it was worse than expected and my tendon was so tight it literally was leaving grooves in my bones.

I’m still not back to running (won’t get cleared to even think about that until November) but I can use my spin bike and walk plus do *some* strength activities. It’s a pretty intense procedure and takes a long time to heal but its so worth it. Good luck to your friend! And just know that the road to recovery is long, painful and frustrating but in the end its worth it.

Reply

I always pause my GPS watch when I stop. I know a lot of people don’t, but I like to enjoy my long runs and not feel pressure to push myself if I want or need to stop. Long runs are about distance for me and stopping is okay in my opinion. Shorter runs are a different story for sure.

Reply

If I’m running by myself, I don’t stop my Garmin but if I’m running with the kids (double stroller and occasionally my 7yo. runs/walks too) I stop it for things like diaper changes, picking up thrown shoes/sippy cups (my youngest is in THAT phase), and while we stop to look at statues or duck ponds.

Currently, I have a small rotator cuff tear and tendonitis in that shoulder but am hopeful that I’ll be able to avoid surgery with the PT that I’m doing.

Reply

That salad is making me hungry! I was telling running buddies today that I was stopping the garmin because we were stopped to discuss a running route and where we should turn. You can’t run a race every week and I like to know the pace for running only!

Reply

I always have my garmin set on auto-pause. At my half-mara this year I made a mortifying mistake of drinking too much water before I ran, and then didn’t want to miss getting in my front coral, when I really should’ve used the bathroom one last time! By the time the race started my bladder hurt, had to wait a total of 7mins to use the porta potty at mile one!! I’m scowl at my race time every time I see it! The race pics from the first mile are a combo of me in pain and freaked out that I was going to pee my pants!!

I haven’t had any running related surgeries, but I got my wisdom teeth removed the Monday after I graduated with my bachelors (not the graduation present I was hoping for) and my gall bladder removed in 1998.
