A runner’s clinic, a spin playlist and where you can find me tonight.

Now this was fun.

My good friend teaches a conditioning class for dancers at a local college and she asked me to come do a runner’s clinic for her class.  They are building up their running endurance over the semester to help them with their dancing endurance so I came and talked to them about form, training plans for their goals, shoes, cadence and some mental tips for running.  I wish I could do this kind of stuff every day because I LOVE talking about running and helping people get started.

Brooke wanted to join in and add in what she has learned about running over the last 7 months of her running career.

IMG 7952

I let Brooke choose what we did afterwards:

And then when it got a little later it was time to go teach spin.  I just got some adorable head wraps from Five Gates Boutique to help keep all of my hair out of my face while I teach.  These wraps also cover a big portion of my head so I can go even longer between hair washings and/or coloring my hair;)  TMI.

PS I have had these spin/biking shoes for 8 years now and they still feel great…  that is pretty impressive.

IMG 7977

Class was great and I really do love teaching again.

A lady in my class had the coolest necklace.  Love the different race logos on the charms from races she has done.

IMG 7975

After class Brookers and I went to an indoor play area and I ate a turkey bowl with the most delicious caramelized onions on top from Which Wich.

IMG 7979

The spin playlist for the week!  The Centuries song by Fallout Boy is new(ish) and it is definitely going to make the cut for my marathon playlist in EIGHTEEN DAYS.

Saw this yesterday and this may be the best Instagram I have ever seen.  You know where to find me tonight.  I can’t wait to find out what the shocking news is.

I love onions but my stomach not so much. I usually wear a bangbuster headband from lululemon when I run and they are wide and tight enough to double as an ear warmer in the winter which is how I justify the purchase! I’ve been running for almost 10 years, although on and off.

Reply

I would love it if you ran a running clinic for us ;) Wow I love that race necklace – such a cute idea! I also use headbands whenever I workout, if I don’t I look like I’ve been electrocuted!

I’m so excited for The Mindy Project!! I will be watching tonight too! Very excited that she and Danny finally got together! It’ll be interesting to see where they take that relationship in the story line.

I started running competitively when I was in second grade. I was the only girl on my cross country team in high school, which had its advantages and disadvantages! (Pro – always having a date to the school dances:)

I do a headband or a hat. I can’t have my hair in my face. It’ll drive me crazy.

I used to hate onions but love them now. I could eat them with (nearly) everything!

Reply

That’s cool they asked you to do a clinic. I’ve never had good luck with headbands. They honestly always seem to fall off my head or just look awkward, so I gave up. Oh or they have given me a headache I guess.

I like onions a lot. I haven’t had any in a while but that should change soon. At least I hope it will.

Reply

Because I’m clearly not an adult and can’t go to the store and buy onions. Ha, on the grocery list they go.

Reply

I have been counting down the days until today… THE MINDY PROJECT DAY! :) So glad it’s finally back!

So cool that you got to go give running tips to the dancers!! I have been running since June 2012. I can’t believe it’s been that long already and at the same time I feel like I’ve been doing it my whole life :) The marathon next month is basically my 2.5 year runnaversary gift to myself, haha.

Reply

I’ve been running about 17 years. But only really got into races and such the last or so years.

My hair is short, so putting on a hat usually works for me. If I’m not wearing a hat, then a bondi band works too.

I love onions, but I don’t like them raw in sandwiches or burgers. I can only do carmelized in those. Raw I like in tacos, salsa, stuff like that. Weird??

Reply

LOVE Mindy Project!!!!
Ive been running for about three years seriously.
Always bobby pin the bangs back and braid it.
Yes to onions. But I like them raw.

Reply

I run in a visor when the weather is warm and a head noodle (or head sock– whatever you want to call it) in the winter. My hubster uses the Halo headbands with their little rain-gutter band to prevent sweat going into his eyes, but I don’t run ad long (or sweat as much!). I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOO excited for TMP. I do most of my internet/computer/laundry while watching programs online and walking with the treadmill desk, so I’m pretty stoked to have my fave shows back! :)

Reply

Obsessed with Mindy!!! Do you also watch New Girl? Because I have a feeling you would love that show too. It comes on right before Mindy tonight :)

Reply

When I run, my hair has 2 ponytails, 1 headband, and probs some bobby pins up in there. It’s a rats nest that can’t be tamed, take me as I am running world!

Mindy Project is absolutely hysterical but what I am really living and breathing for is THE RETURN OF SCANDAL!!!!!

Reply

I love the Mindy Project! I also love her and just finished her book Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me and had a few laughs.

Reply

I have been running for ten years…. that makes me feel old.

Not seen the Mindy Project! But I need a new comedy now 30 Rock is gone from my life… and I heart Kelly Kapoor, so maybe the Mindy Project is the way forward…

Nay on onions!! They are like little slimy worms in my food as far as I’m concerned. #gross But maybe my tastes need to mature ;)

Reply

I love the Mindy Project and I’ve been running longer than you’ve been alive. Runners get better with age, trust! :)

Reply

Love the headband! Does it work for running too? I cant find a headband that actually stays on my head while running but not so tight that I get a headache. It is actually driving me nuts!

Have you heard the remix of radioactive? Pretty great running song…you may want the edited version though :)

Got my run in this morning before the toddler I watch even woke up, it turned into a speed workout because he kept moving around (on the monitor) and I wanted to hurry and finish before he woke up! Motivation from a 2 year old :) It was awesome because Im going through a really tough time now and needed those endorphins to face the day! Now we are enjoying green smoothies together.

Reply

I’ve been running for 12 years…but in the last 3 have switched to more “distance running” from track stuff. I am really enjoying the change :)

onions – yes. but only if I don’t have the cut them up.

super cool that you got to do that clinic. One of my favorite things about my job is that I get to help runners everyday learn to enjoy running more and be better at it.

Reply

I have been running since high school but really only training/racing for 7 years. I think for about 15 years I have run as a form of exercise in some way.
I haven’t had much luck with headbands so I just put my hair in a ponytail and hope for the best!

Reply

WHO ELSE LOVES THE MINDY PROJECT?

Love that Centuries song is awesome!!

I started running in 2006 or 2007. I’m not sure anymore.

I have to wear a headband when I workout. And if it’s a really sweaty workout, I have to have my hair completely off of my sweaty skin. That usually involves a messy bun.

Onions? Yay!

Reply

How fun to teach a clinic on running! I’m sure you did great and the girls had to love Brooke. Onions are okay with me… minus the breath afterwards :S

I ran my first 5k five years ago. It’s crazy how much running changes a person! After the 5k, came a 10k, and then a bunch of marathons. It’s like a bug a person gets… after one race, I was hooked :)

Reply

I didn’t think I liked headbands but I just recently tried the non-slip ones and I’m obsessed. What was I thinking??? I can’t pull my hair back without wearing one now. I do like onions but I watch my carbs closely and I was surprised to learn that they have more than I realized.

Reply

Negative on the onions. My stomach does not love them for some reason. Love the headband girl! I’ve been wearing the Fabletics ones we got at Blend and they are awesome for keeping sweaty hair wasps out of my face and ears too.

Reply

I have been running for 20 years! It almost seems impossible seeing as I’m only 32… but not only is it possible it’s a reality!

When I work out I usually wear a headband and when I race I wear a braid… I’m super superstitious

I. LOVE. ONIONS! I literally would eat onion sandwiches…. miracle whip and red onions… no judgement

Reply

I’m all about onions. I used to eat them like an Apple I’m told. I would love to come to one of your running lectures. You should start having them once a month. I’d fly out!

Reply

I love The Mindy Project! Have you read her book, “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?” It is sooo good. I laughed out loud through the majority of it.

I typically where a headband AND bobby pins. My head has been, ahem, blessed, with 2395845894 fly-aways so I need both hair contraptions to get those things in check.

And, I have been running/training for a half marathon since May 4th :)

Reply

My favorite is to just through my hair in a top knot. Although it’s more of a hot mess.
Onions. Depends. Cooked are delicious!

Reply

I always wear a hat or a visor and my hair goes in a pony. But I have been curious about those head wraps. They might be a good alternative. I sweat a ton! And my curly hair gets unruly.
I like onions except raw unless in guacamole or pico de gallo :)
Started running in 2006. :)

Reply

I’ve been running for 6 months and I love it!! I usually put my hair into a bun and then bobby pin the hairs that get missed out, I hate having an hair touch my neck when I work out so most of the time its a headband and a bun! I love onions, that turkey bowl looks amazing!

Reply

I’ve been freaking out over Mindy’s countdown posts, I’ll be glued to the couch tonight to watch her and New Girl return!

Been running since 2010, and onions on everything always ALL THE TIME. Love them.

Reply

I have so many issues with my hair when I run- haha! I usually do bobby pins but those sometimes don’t work so great with my bangs. I prob should use a headband buuuuut that would involve searching through my closet to find one…

Reply

I have been running for almost a year! I usually use a headband, but my hair falls out anyway.
I can handle cooked onions, but not raw ones, unless they’re the purple kind. (yes, I know, I am very picky :))

Reply

I seriously want to steal your eyelashes in that headband picture. But that would be weird so I won’t.

I typically just pull my hair up in a ponytail when I workout. I’ve tried buns, but they always fall out from the bouncing. I have zero idea how people workout with their hair down. My neck gets too hot and sweaty and my hair would look like a hot mess by the time I was done.

Reply

I absolutely LOVE The Mindy Project!!! I seriously laugh out loud when I’m watching (which doesn’t happen often). I can’t wait to watch the new episode tonight!!

Reply

I dabbled in running a bit, but officially this is the 3rd fall season of running for me.

I typically just throw my hair into a high pony and it does okay. When it’s bugging me, I’ll throw a headband/wrap thing on my head.

<3 onions :) And seriously, helping people with running would be like the greatest job ever!

Reply

I LOVE The Mindy Project!!!! Soo excited for it 5 come back! We should watch together one of these days. ;)
And I love that headband. So cute!!

Reply

I love The Mindy Project! Mindy Kaling is so funny to me. I must use a headband when I run or do any kind of working out. My hair is short-ish now but even when it was long a headband is necessary. Bic bands are my favorites! Always yes to onions.

Reply

I am so excited for The Mindy Project and New Girl to be back tonight!!!! I will definitely be camped out on my couch tonight!

I have been running consistently 4 months and love it more with each run!

Reply

PLEASE post your running clinic online! I would love to be able to hear what you have to say about form, training plans, goals, shoes, cadence and mental tips for running. pah pah pahlease!!!!!!

Reply

Love onions, especially onion rings and strings from the Cheesecake Factory! I will always choose onion rings over French fries and love adding onion rings (or the onion strings) to my salads. Best salad topper there is.

Reply

I wear a headband when I workout. I need to check that one out–love it!
I have been running since I was 15 (42 now). It has certainly evolved over the years but hoping it will always be a little part of my (varied) training program. And I do love onions but the problem is, they don’t love me back.

Reply

i think i’m going to start watching the Mindy Project bc it’s on with New Girl and i adore New Girl. Although Nick and JEss have to get back together bc they’re soulmates.

I get my hair OFF my face, it drives me insane. I really wish i could get a whole bunch of headbands but i think they’re soooooooo expensive!!!!!

I love this playlist! Mine is in 4 1/2 weeks and i am SOOO EXCITED!!!!

Reply

Love The Mindy Project! Thanks for the reminder, I didn’t even know it was premiering. But I think the “shocking news” is the premiere itself, not that there is shocking news in the first episode. At least that’s the way I took it.

Reply

YES to onions ALL of the time! I love them so much! :) I’m a big fan of the Mindy Project, and can’t wait to watch it!

Reply

I LOVE the Mindy Project! I am so excited for the return tonight!
I use many many bobby pins to keep my hair up, I just haven’t found a headband that works! I would love to hear your running seminar :)

Reply

Yay to onions!

I watched the first episode of the Mindy Project when it premiered and really couldn’t get into it. I need to give it another chance!

Reply

God bless the Mindy Project. I’ve been waiting to watch all summer!! In the meantime I started watching Community, which is pretty funny but not AS funny as Mindy!

Reply

You would be a great coach!

Can’t wait for Mindy Project tonight! Definitely one of my favorite shows. :) I just hope they get renewed for a full season!!

Reply

I’ve been running for around 5 years and quickly became addicted.
I use a headband with rubber grips to hold my hair back.
Yes to onions, but only if they’re cooked.

Reply

I LOVE The Mindy Project! I’m so excited to watch tonight!!!

For my hair, pony with a Halo headband. I cut bangs about a year ago and I hate working out and having them stick to my forehead

Reply

I’ve technically been running for around 9 years. Started in cross-country in high school, but took a 5 year break until my first half marathon. Then I didn’t run for another year and now I’ve been running for just over a year. Third half marathon in two weeks and first full marathon in April!

Onions=yes. always.

Reply

I love that woman’s necklace! I have been thinking about getting a necklace with a 26.2 charm. I have two ultras coming up (a 50k and then American River 50) but for some reason the 26.2 distance seems the most significant.

I can’t believe your marathon is only 18 days away! Hopefully getting back into teaching spin will keep the taper crazies at bay.

Reply

YES I am so excited for the Mindy Project tonight too!

Reply

I can’t stand sweaty hair in my face when I’m working out, so I put my hair in a pony tail and if I have bangs like I do now, I use bobby pins to keep my bangs out of my face.

Reply

LOVE those head wraps! I just recently chopped my hair to about shoulder length and can’t seem to find anything that will keep it back and out of my face for workouts. Just ventured over to Etsy and will definitely be putting an order in – thanks for the link!

I’ve been looking for a new show to get into lately…will have to tune into The Mindy Project and see what all this hype is about!

Reply

I have a ton of fine, curly/wavy hair and a small head. For workouts I put it in a pony or bun and NEED a headband too. Only the velvet backed ones seem to stay put. Things just shouldn’t be this complicated.

Not an onion fan ’cause of the texture. If they’re tiny and cooked into something I’m ok.

Reply

running hair=2 hair ties with hair twisted into a bun and a Sweaty Band. I think doing this to my hair everyday causes a lot of breakage and baby bangs…but I can’t stand my hair in my face or on my neck when I run.

Reply

cannot WAIT for the mindy project and please hold my onions (unless it’s just for flavoring and i can pick around them). so cool you taught the class all about running, it’s amazing when you find your passion!

Reply

I would love for you to do a post (clinic would be hard for me since I am in PA:))about form, training plans for goals, shoes, cadence and some mental tips for running!!
Not a big fan of raw onions, but I love cooked onions. My daughter who will be 9 (also named Brooke) loves them too!

Reply

I love The Mindy Project! Literally SO excited that it starts back up tonight! I find something oddly attractive about Danny Castellano haha.

I’ve been running for about ten years now, on and off. I ran the Pittsburgh Marathon back in 2012, and definitely want to do another at some point in the future, though I don’t know when yet.

And my hairrrrr… I always wear a baseball cap when I go to the gym or go running – it covers up my nasty hair, and also helps me get in the zone haha!

Reply

I’ve been running about 2 years now! Many more to go :) I use headbands to keep my hair back. I just bought one from Lululemon and it works so well!

Reply

Love the headband!! I use various headbands. Most are okay for running, but I can’t find one that stays put while I play volleyball.

Reply

I’ve been running since I was 10, and I love onions if they are cooked :)

Reply

Never saw the Mindy project (I love tv!)
Been running since junior high but most recently been avid for the past 4 years, did my first half marathon 4 years ago.
I put my hair in a bun every day when I run. I cannot stand having any hair touching me while I run especially since I sweat a lot!
I love that necklace the girl had, where did she get it I wonder??

Reply

love your head wrap!! i throw a giant crazy bun on top of my head, use a bobby pin for the baby hairs underneath near my neck, and top it off with a lululemon headband!

Reply

I LOVE that necklace! I saw those at the race expo for Big Cottonwood and wished I had a kajillion dollars to spend.

I’ve been running since I was 17 but didn’t start loving it until my mid 30’s.

Bobby pins for my hair. I have a really small head and while head wraps are cute, they just don’t work for me.

Onions–yay.

Reply

I love that necklace! Do you know where she got it and how one can collect charms for it?

Reply

I will ask her the next time she comes to my class!!! I hope you are having a great day!

Reply

I only eat onions if you cook the crap out of them. I hate the crunch! I also have an unnatural level of hatred for peppers. ;) I’m a good friend to have if you love that stuff. I give it away frequently! haha
I’ve been running for a few years, had to slow down a bit right now because Crohn’s is being a pain. Once I get that taken care of I’ll be back at it!
I love that lady’s necklace! It’s awesome!

Reply

You KNOW I love The Mindy project. I think we need to have a party. Maybe Candice would actually want to join us since it isn’t The Bachelor. I already have a treat in mind that I would bring (because that is how my mind works. Everything revolves around and starts with food).

I have a few headbands I use when I run. Sometimes I forget and the little flyaways drive me INSANE. I think those big headbands that you wear are so cute, but I don’t think I could pull it off so I have yet to buy any.

You need to let me know when and where you teach cause I would love to come to a class. I miss a good spin class.

Onions are delicious. I cant eat them when I am pregnant (especially red ones) because they make me nauseous and give me heart burn, but any other time, I love them.

I have been running for 12 years now. Wow. That is crazy sauce. I am not old enough to be running that long. Right? RIGHT?

That picture of Brooke on the swing is adorable. It just truly captures happiness and being a child.

Reply

Onions-yes! But not the day before a race…
How long have I been running…I would venture to say, longer than most people on this blog have been walking! (that hurts just to type it!)
I will be starting spin after my marathon in a couple of weeks….

Reply

I just ate Which Wich for the first time a couple of months ago and now I am in love! It is crazy the number of topping choices they offer. I already have plans to go there on Saturday ;)

Reply

The Mr. and I caught 3 straight episodes of the Mindy project when we were in Park City. The first time we watched. So funny, now we are hooked and went back and started at season 1.

Wich wich was on my to-do list when in Utah, I must come back.

Reply

I love raw purple onions in salads! So good! And it’s funny because I never used to. Also YAYYY MINDY! I’m so excited! :)

xo

I “had” to run for conditioning for sports in high school, but I definitely wasn’t a fan of it. The summer after my first year of college I picked it up to stay in shape for the college crew/rowing team I was on. But then I decided not to row anymore and I just fell in love with running…especially after running my first race. So I guess I have been running for about 7 years.

Usually I just let my hair do whatever it wants, but when it’s windy I’ll wear a headband or visor.

Reply

Where was that neckalce from?? Been looking for running jewelry and that one is super adorable!

I’ve been running on and off since the seventh grade. I have massive curly hair so I have to put it up in a pony tail with a headband.

Reply

What type of spin shoes are those? I’m in the market for some and have been reading reviews. 8 years and still great – now that’s a stellar recommendation. Thanks!

Reply

Running, running, running. I have been running since I was really little—probably Brooke’s age. My parents would take me to all-comer meets to run the 50 meter dash in a little sweat suit. I did not stay in my lane, to say the least. I started running competitively in 7th grade and have been at it since!

In the last 3 months, I dropped my habit of wearing pre-wrap headbands—something I picked up from my years of playing basketball because it was “the style” of the high school team in my hometown when I was an elementary kid. I’m letting my hair go free now which may be a terrible idea, but we’ll see how it goes. Pre-wrap still remains my favorite “fly-away controller” since we couldn’t wear bobby pins in high school (I’d like to meet the runner that was injured by racing in bobby pins) until recently.

Onions: YAY. Especially on a good bratwurst. 

Reply

I haven’t seen the Mindy project, but I read her book this summer (Is everyone hanging out without me?) and LOVED it so I have a feeling I’d really like her show too. I keep the hair out of my face by using headbands with teeth. The flexible bands don’t work for me sadly because I guess I have an oddly shaped head! They slip right off :(

Reply

Have you heard of the band Parachute?! They have a bunch of up tempo songs you may like for your spin class! I would recommend Higher off their CD “Overnight”.

Reply

Headbands all the way! I’m currently obsessed with Sweatybands!

Reply

Where do you teach spin??

Reply

Hi! I was wondering where she got her running necklace from? I am looking for one and can’t find one that I like but hers is so cute! I just love reading your blog since you are so real and funny :-)

Reply

Never watched the Mindy Project (although I hear that I should), but I DO love New Girl, which started back tonight. Love it!

Reply

I haven’t seen the Mindy project yet!

I have been running on and off since the 6th grade and I’m still not very great haha

I brush all my hair out and spin a ponytail around in my fingers and keep spinning until my hair automatically goes into a bun and then I take a ponytail/hair band and wrap the twisted bun. It doesn’t pull on my scalp and stays REALLY well with a tight hairband! I use bobby pins for my baby hairs.

LOVE onions.

Reply

Shocking but I didn’t manage to get into TMP. Perhaps I need to give it another try.

Reply

I love Mindy Project, it’s my favorite!
