First speed workout in months!

I woke up and got on Instagram (my absolute favorite) first thing and I am glad I did because after seeing a bunch of different people do some hard workouts it inspired me to attempt a speed workout.  I was also short on time and so I needed to do something quick and I was craving a ‘sweat in my eyeballs’ workout.

1 mile warm-up

6 x .5 miles fast (I did mine in—> 3:07, 3:11, 3:11, 3:11, 3:11, 3:05) with .5 mile recovery jogs in between each one.

Normally, I would do a cool-down mile after this but I didn’t have time today.

This was extremely hard for me, it has been a very long time since I have done speed work.

I had to keep repeating to myself for each one that I can do ANYTHING for 3ish minutes.  When doing speed work just focus on the repeat/interval that you are doing at the time.  Don’t start thinking about how you have x more to do.  Stay in the interval that you are doing (or you can also think about how awesome you are for already doing the previous ones).  Thinking about how many more you have to do is scary when you are pushing yourself to the max.

There is nothing like the feeling after finishing a hard (for you) workout.

Now that I am not living with my parents and being able to run before Brooke wakes up in the morning means that things are going to change a little bit:

-Workouts will probably be a shorter than they used to be (besides my long runs).

-A LOT more treadmill miles and jogging stroller miles.

-Luckily, my mom and sis are the best to babysit when I need to get out for a run.

I will miss my running partners a ton because I will be missing out on the early morning runs but…  on Friday nights I will probably sleep at my mom’s house so that I can still go running with them early in the morning on Saturday and get back before Brooke wakes up!

Brooke is already loving inviting her friends to the pool and then over to our house to play in her room.

Lunch was a good one—>  I filled up red pepper halves with shredded chicken and broiled them for a little bit and then topped them with bbq sauce and garden tomatoes (isn’t it crazy how garden tomatoes are 4 trillion times better than store bought tomatoes?!).

IMG 6297

I am pretty sure that buying this couch was one of the best decision of my life.  Anytime brooke is napping or after she goes to bed just know that I am sitting in this extremely comfortable spot (although, my sister did say that anytime she comes over this is her spot).

PS I will do a little apartment tour once all of the furniture is in.. that will be in a few more weeks!

Thanks so much Katie! I hope you are having a great day!

Reply

I was hoping you had ways to work in your runs now that you’ve moved…yay for your awesome family!!! And you know I think running strollers are evil so I’m definitely going to say be careful with that! Listen to your body! Way to go with the speedwork :)

Reply

HAHAH yes but Target carts are okay:) Remember, I think you are absolutely the best!

Reply

Target carts for speedwork only…and only if using proper form in a flat parking lot ;-)

MAC. hands down. i will never go back to PC.

I love instagram, and i do follow a lot of runners (including you!) It does help with motivation, for sure. (and i love checking out people’s running outfits! hah)

That couch looks amazingly comfortable. Have fun decorating the rest of your apt.!

Reply

YES, seeing all of the different running outfits is so fun (and it makes me jealous too). Have a great day!

Reply

Mac and PC, there’s a reason I swear.
I follow a ton of runners on instagram
And my favorite spot in my house is on the lanai in the hammock chair.

Reply

A HAMMOCK CHAIR!?! I NEED!

Reply

I used to have a couch like that and it was the best thing ever! I still am not sure why I don’t still have it!!!

I follow a lot of runners on Instagram! Whenever I am feeling low on motivation I look through my feed and get instant runner’s jealousy and have to go out and do my own run, haha! Sad but true ;)

Reply

MAC!!! :)

i have to follow runners and workout gurus if not i would never get out of my apartment. haha

Reply

I try to do the same thing with Instagram, if I get on first thing, all those runners I follow are usually all I need to get my butt out of bed and hit the pavement, even if it’s just for a short run! Sometimes it can backfire and make me feel “lazy” for not going out there and running hard EVERY day, but I just have to tell myself not to get caught up in the comparison game.

Love your couch, where is it from?! My favorite spot in our little apartment is definitely the bed, it’s just too comfy! :)

Reply

Instagram is my favorite! I follow quite a few other runners and I find their photos really inspiring!
I’m a mac fan but had to switch to a pc when mine died last year due to finances. I miss it very much, but my pc does the job as well.

Reply

I think since your sister is pregnant she should get that spot. It’s just one of those unspoken rules ;)

PC

My favorite spot is my bed. Cause that means I am sleeping…oh how I wish that is where I was right now.

I follow all my running friends on IG, and apparently those people show up on Ross’ feed cause I like the picture and then he mocks it all and will tell me ‘Oh look a picture of feet, a watch and a quote!’ Whatever. What does he know ;) I definitely find ‘most’ people inspirational….some people are just crazy, if you know what I mean.

Reply

You are my running inspiration!
We have a napping couch, definitely a favorite spot.

Reply

Ha, I have a favorite spot too, in my favorite recliner. Anytime one of the kids is in it when I come into the living room, all I have to say is “out,” and they know what I mean, lol.

That picture of Brooke and her little boyfriend is too cute.

Great job on the speed intervals! I die going at a 3:45 pace for those 800s, so I seriously don’t know how you do it!

I’ve been wishing I had a couch with a chaise lounge so I could lay out like that. But, I’ll have to stick with my regular couch for now. Yours is so pretty and is a great color! I follow a fair number of runners on Instagram and seeing them post things does inspire me to work out…and it definitely inspires me to sign up for races when I see how much fun they’re having at their own races!

Reply

Mac — always :)

We recently bought a new sectional couch with a chaise (much like yours, actually) which is where I’m sitting right now — it’s the best!

Reply

My fave spot is lounging on our L-couch too!

Way to go on those speedy half-ers! I find the treadmill to be the best way to do speed work.

Reply

Definitely Mac!!! And we have the same type of couch and that is also my favorite spot:-) Just something about it!

Reply

Love that speed workout–I’ll try that myself soon. Though I’ll have to hold that pace for a lot longer time, LOL, because I run way slower than you ;-)

I love that couch, too! I saw one in the IKEA catalog and it’s on my list for when I replace the furniture we have now.

Reply

I just love your blog!!! I read a ton of them daily and yours is definitely my favorite!! You are definitely an inspiration….and not just for running!

Reply

Mac! I love my leather loveseat. It fits me and my dog perfectly and I spend lots of time there.
I love seeing garmin watch pics on ig. Just seeing others post their miles and accountability.

Reply

Yes! I follow mostly runners and they’re awesome inspiration! I’m not running for a week or two while my knee heals so for now they’re pumping me up for when I get back!

MAC :)

Reply

Mac all the way!!

Most of the people I follow are runners or other Moms

My couch has perma-indent from my behind from when I was pregnant with my twins and it’s also been my spot to nurse all 3 kids. Basically, everyone knows it’s my spot and don’t even think about taking it!
I love following runners on IG and lots of my favorite foodie people! It’s by far my favorite social media.

Reply

I have a Mac that is on its last leg! Every time I hit the space bar it pops up with an equals sign and the sound goes off. :) Hopefully getting a new computer this Xmas!

Reply

You should try more HIIT workouts! They’re quick, effective, and intense.

Also,…you should follow my insta: @thefitty :D

Reply

I’m all about foowjng others on Instagtam it gives me tons of motivation to stay fit and eat healthy! The food porn can be dangerous though. I own a MAC. I bought my first ones last year. I love it, but I wish someone would tell me how to organize my pictures into folders easily.

Reply

Ahh, my heart hurts for you missing your morning running partners!

Since moving to a new city a YEAR ago, I have yet to fnd a morning running group. There are hundreds of people who meet in the afternoons for run clubs, but without anyone running with me early in the dark, I am confined to the treadmill on weekdays.
I’m not giving up though!

You are spot on about tomatoes! I live in NC so we have some of the best in the world at our farmers markets, but NONE are better then the garden tomatoes my grandparents get from my grandfather’s former patience!

Reply

Now that I’m getting into running more, I need to start doing some speed workouts to cut down on my mile time! That couch looks so comfy, my dad has the same shape and I always sit in the same spot on the end!

Reply

Mac all the way!

I just started back with speed workouts after a seemingly endless break from it to recover from a hip injury. Unfortunately the first one, hill repeats, was terrible! I think only the last two repeats (of 8) were close to target. Ugh. But this week’s two workouts I hit my times and felt awesome doing so. I hope this is direction I keep going as I lead up to my marathon in October.

I’m sure you’re going to get back to your speedy self soon. Your bad workouts kick my best workout’s butt.

Heya Janae!

Josh is an apple hater–I totally want one one day though haha.
Whenever I see speed workouts on insta–it makes my stomach hurt! Speed kills me so hard. I think track just ruined me. Talked about insta nausea—hopefully I get over that one day!

Reply

YAY for speed work! Way to get back at it, girl! Fast as usual. :)

I switched to Mac in March and will never go back to PC. I can’t believe how much easier it is than a PC. I follow a lot of runners and triathletes on Instagram (among other social media) because I can learn a lot and get inspired!

Reply

I follow a lot of runners on Instagram but also people in Air Medical transport. It feels like keeping up with my buddies even though I haven’t met all of them.
My favorite place in my house is my bed. I know its lazy and awful but as soon as my ex moved out I painted the bedroom, got a new bed and bought a big screen TV. If I’m on the computer, watching a movie or just hanging out it’s my space!

Reply

Oh my gosh I love your couch/pillow! They look so comfy :) And wow – your speed is insane!

Reply

I’m definitely a Mac person. Pretty much every electronic device I own is Apple and I love it because everything syncs together and makes my life so much easier!

I love instagram and definitely follow runners (including you) for inspiration!

Favorite spot in my apartment is my couch :)

Reply

Super cute!! How exciting for u! I love your sofa I have a mocha colored one and love the long part where it’s my spot. Your food always looks simple and yummy like I can throw that together thanks for the ideas.

Reply

I follow Stuftmama on IG and FB and get inspired by her workouts and the foods that she eats. I also follow you and love seeing your IG posts or new blog posts :D

Reply

You have my couch! That’s totally my spot on the couch too, it’s the best :)

The running blogs I read are such great motivation. I’m barely on IG

I am very close to making the switch to Mac, my PC is falling apart and everyone I know seems to have and love their Macs.

Reply

Your blog inspires me to run! I don’t really use instagram.

I have a roomate and he and his girlfriend are messy, so my favorite place is my room because it’s the only clean place in the house!

Oooh love the couch! Where is it from? I’ve been looking for one just like that for ages!

Thank you! RC Willey!

Best spot is the right seat of the small coach – my two year old in my lap, four year old tucked under my left arm, and it’s got an end table, so I can have my coffe in close proximity to my right hand :)

Other than my friends & family, I mainly follow whole30 & paleo posts to keep my nutrition inspired. What are your favorite running IG’s to follow? Need a little inspiration there too ;)

Reply

I’m definitely a mac girl. I find them so much easier to use (I’m not exactly tech-savvy) and I love how they never get viruses.

I don’t follow a lot of runners per-say. I do, however, follow tons of healthy lifestyle/food/raw vegan people! They definitely give me inspiration! I don’t really get motivated by social networking sites though.

My favorite spot in my house it my den. My mom’s tearing it out to expand the kitchen in a couple of months and I’m seriously heart broken over it.

Reply

DEFINITELY Mac. No questions asked. My favorite spot in my place is my couch as well. I’m on it most of the time that I’m home. If it’s nice outside, I’m also on my porch a lot too. That couch looks amazing!

Reply

Definitely Mac and everything Apple… It is same “crack” for me as Nike gear for running!

I love getting inspired through Instagram, blogs (like yours!) and other social media. I also really love when I can inspire other people :)

My favorite spot in my apartment is my sofa. I had one in the same spot, but since I got new one that is really high quality and I love it I have been spending lot of time on that sofa :) Reading, blogging, using my Compex and recovering after runs! I love yours!!! Can’t wait for the tour of your new apartment.

Reply

I’m a PC person but I don’t want to be! I work in web development and Macs are wayyyy better for it but I can’t afford one just yet :( Soon I hope! Your apartment looks gorgeous, I can’t wait to see it all together :) My favourite place is my bed…. funny how I have a whole house and yet if I want to relax or even work 99% of the time I do it in or on my bed!

Reply

Once you go MAC, you never go back.

I can relate to the treadmill miles and stroller miles! My running has changed a lot since having a child. It takes waking up super early to fit in a run or slowing my pace to bring the stroller.

Reply

That couch seriously looks so comfortable!!! I love the ones with the extensible part because it feels like you are lying in bed yet you are sitting in your living room! The best of both worlds!

I am obsessed with instagram these days, it is my favorite social medial outlet and I definitely get a lot of motivation from there!

Congrats on your speed work! I love seeing your progress!

Reply

I have always had PCs but I am looking into getting a mac soon. Now that I have the iphone and ipad I think it just makes sense.
I love seeing other inspiring workouts on instagram! Although on my rest days it sometimes makes me jealous:)

Reply

I went from Mac to Chromebook- one end of the spectrum to the other! (and I love it!)

Reply

I follow a lot of other fitness motivated people through Twitter and Instagram. Sometimes they are the extra push that I need to get out the door or remind me why it is important to go that extra mile.

Reply

I love those corner seats too- so comfy!!

Reply

I can’t wait to see your apartment all put together!

I’m Mac all the way :)

I only follow you and Kara Goucher on Insta. I should probably look into following more because I love seeing the stuff you all post.

Fav spot in my house is either my jacuzzi tub or on the left side of our sectional where I can see both the front and back yard.

Reply

I like the sound of your new plan. Sounds like things are working out.

I’m a Mac kind of gal.
Yes, social media totally motivates me to work out. That’s what brought me to your blog in the first place.

Reply

Mac all the way! All our electronics are Apple products. I follow both runners and other types of athletes (some tri, some crossfit) and get inspired by all of them. Favorite spot in the house, that’s a hard one, a mix between my “spot” on the couch and my bed. Because I just love our bed since I work a shift job where I sleep at work on old twin beds in a bunk room.

Reply

Mac for sure! I have had mine for 5 years now and it hasn’t slowed down a bit.

I love following runners on Instagram! Our whole CDR account is just following runners and bloggers and whoever else I find inspiring (a few nature photographers thrown in there!) Sometimes you just need a little proof of what other people are out there doing to inspire/ guilt you into getting up and going!

Sounds like a great workout, good to see you’re back at it!

Compromise is the name of the game, mama. and you are SUCH a good Mama. way to fit it in!

I have the same style couch and that is my favorite spot on it!

Where did you get that couch? I love it!

Speed workouts are hard stuff! I’ve never been on instagram or twitter. I need to start keeping up with the times don’t I? :)
