We somehow survived 8 hours on the roads yesterday and I will share with you our secrets of how we did it.

1.  I did a toning circuit workout at the hotel gym to get my muscles nice and tired before sitting in the car for so long.  I did THIS ONE!

2.  We spent all morning long with Brooke’s besties at the pool to get her extra tired and then left San Diego 4 minutes before nap time.  Worked like a charm and girlfriend slept like a rock for the first portion of the trip.

2.  We ate at Chipotle because we are both obsessed with their burrito bowls with guacamole and as much salsa as they are allowed to pour on top.

3.  Even though I packed plenty of healthy snacks…  gas station food gets me every time and I couldn’t say no to some candy and a diet coke for some much needed caffeine for the rest of the drive.

4.  Nemo.  Nemo.  Nemo.  Bless Finding Nemo’s heart because that movie kept Brooke very entertained.

5.  My amazing road trip playlist and the fact that Brooke now understands the concept (and importance) of dancing when a really good song comes on.

6.  Stopping in Mesquite, Nevada to walk around at sunset and then find a play place to get out as many wiggles as possible.

7.  Staying the night in St. George with one of my oldest and greatest friends so that we can get a good night’s sleep and then finish up the rest of the drive tomorrow.

5 things I am looking forward to coming up:

1.  My sister just got a pool.  We are going to finish off summer the right way.

2.  I am going to go TRAIL RUNNING THIS WEEK… it has been way too long.

3.  To cook.  After so much eating out, I can’t wait to make my own meals and eat at home (eating at home vs. eating out is 4 trillion times less stressful when you have an almost 2 year old).

4.  We move into our new place in 11 days…  AHHHHHH PARTY AT OUR HOUSE AND EVERYONE IS INVITED:)

5.  This week I get to meet a friend (that I met through the blog) for the first time ever… we have been emailing for over 3 years now!!!

Tell me a few things that you are looking forward to!!!!

Now I want to go on a trail run! It’s been way too long since I went on one. I know what you mean about not being able to cook. For 21 days I am only at home for 8 of them! I’m so sick of hotel food!

I am the same way with gas station food on a road trip. I like finding treats that I don’t usually purchase. It’s one of my favorite parts of a road trip!

We drive back and forth to the homeland, it is about 650 miles one way. We leave super early in the morning (4am) and our rule is, if one of us has to use the bathroom, we both go. The first time V made the trip he was 3 weeks old. It was the longest trip ever, because it was just him and me, and I was breastfeeding.

Now he is 7 and does the trip better than I do. I find that I get super tired towards the end and need to eat crackers..for some reason that wakes me up.

The gas station food gets me too. I swear only the good stuff, you can’t find anywhere else is in the gas station.

Safe travels!

I fall asleep when I drive. Or I used to. I’m not as bad now. But my trick is Hot Tamales. I do love crackers but I don’t think they’d do it for me.

Sound like you are finishing off summer right!!
This week I’m going to be on my own with my kids a ton so I’m trying to think of some fun things to do with them. There’s a new splash pad by us so maybe we’ll try that. Entertaining toddlers is exhausting! Come play with us!!

Can’t wait to see your new place. House warming party for SURE!

I am so so so so so happy for you for getting your own place! I’m going thru a similar process right now and my parents had to put my two children and I up and even though I’m so grateful it would be nice to have my own place again. So very excited for u!
Ok restaurants and small children terrify me more than spiders crawling all over me. I totally agree that cooking at home is better.
Have a good week!

I love all of this- especially that your sister got a pool!
I am also looking forward to getting back to my own cooking at home. Lately I feel like the weekends have been so busy and I am going away all the time- while that can be fun its also nice to get back to a routine and better eating!

So exciting that you get to move into your new place soon!!!!

At first I read that as you did a circuit workout in the car LOL. I’m glad the drive was easy and that you have a ton of fun things on tap.

funny story…a while back when I tore my calf and was hopped up on Vicodin, I watched Finding Nemo several times a day for a week straight. I, however, don’t remember this, I just hear the horror story from Jonah who was taking care of me and had to sit through watching Finding Nemo 50 times in a week. Apparently I love that movie as much as Brooke!

I’m still confused as to why you were in SD?>…..

My husband has the week off so we get some much needed family time and I get a little bit of a break since he’ll be around to help with the boys. Thursday we’re heading up to a family cottage for some swimming, fishing and fun. I’m quite excited to have some nature time! Oh and I bought the Divergent series and another new book for my e-reader just in time for relaxing.

I am looking forward to meeting my best friends new BABY today!!! She was born yesterday and I’m already in love with her.

Can you share that playlist?? I love lurking playlists and stealing songs for mine :)

So exciting that your sister got a pool!!!! I have recently decided that just slowly swimming laps is the best way to recover from a long run! I used to always think I needed to really swim hard or pool run, but just paddling around at a leisurely speed feels SO good!

The countdown is ON for your new place! :)

I’m looking forward to starting some dance classes in August! I’m getting an unlimited pass :)

I’m excited to SEE MY BEST FRIEND TOMORROW!! He was in Canada for a couple of weeks so we obviously couldn’t see each other or even talk so I’m super duper excited to see my favorite person..

Whoa! Pool and trail running sound like two awesome things to look forward to!!

What I am looking forward to this week actually happens next weekend, I am going to a good friend’s bachelorette party at a lake house. I can’t wait to be back on some water again, relaxing in the sun with some fun girls!

I love road trips. They are awesome. That is all.

Reply

I think I need to employ those trips for MYSELF! Well, maybe not when I’m driving.
Road trips are a free pass to eat a ton of junk. Mmmm soda. Mmmmm candy. :-)

After training for months on road, I too get to run on trails. YES! Enjoy it!

Reply

I’m looking forward to going to Maryland in a couple of weeks to see my best friends and run a 12 mile race!
It sounds like you had your road trip perfectly planned out! I always pack healthy snacks but never eat them. I’ve done many long road trips (including 4 8 hour ones alone) and drink a lot of red bull!

Reply

I’m super excited this week because I’m going back to Chicago for a baby shower and then my mom and sister are coming down to visit me if Florida for my 30th birthday. I’m starting a month of 30 challenges because, well, I need a goal to accomplish pretty much anything these days. So I’ve got that going for me :)

Reply

It looks like your road trip has been quite successful. Nemo would definitely entertain me too! I am looking forward to running the Cascade Lakes Relay this weekend with eleven other wonderful people – 217 miles in 38 hours – can’t wait!!!

Reply

I always love cooking after a long period of having to eat out, too. I start to miss having control over what goes into the food. I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s obsessed with Chipotle guacamole! What I’m looking forward to this week: going to a Chicago Cubs game and a two hour long massage that I have scheduled!

Reply

That sounds like a well thought out plan, I always try to work out really hard before a trip so I can just chill and enjoy the rest. At least here I travel by train so I could always do push-ups ans sit-ups if I wanted to though it would freak all the Chinese out

Reply

Awesome job on the drive! I did 7 hours with my little guy a few weeks ago and the iPad with Bubble Guppies was a lifesaver!!

I’m looking forward to holidays! 2 weeks and then I’m flying home to see my family in Vancouver :)

Reply

I am looking forward to Friday when I am finished with Yoga Teacher Training! It has been a great experience, but 6 hours of training 6 days a week is wearing on me. I plan to sit and do NOTHING all day next Sunday. :)

You did that entire trip on your own with a toddler=you are my new hero. Amazing.

Reply

Looking forward to some good runs this week and creating my marathon training plan :) Glad you survived the ride home! I’m always looking forward to my own home cooking when I get back from a trip :)

Now that I’m not working Andrew and I are trying to cook more meals at home. Tonight we had a balsamic chicken Panini with tomato and mozzarella and it was gooooood. I totally agree with you about gas station food. I got a diet Pepsi and Mike and Ike’s for my drive from Maryland to North Carolina and that definitely helped :)

That sounds like a crazy long drive! You guys flew to CA, I thought? Were you there getting back your car post-divorce? If this is too personal/none of the blog’s business, please ignore or delete! I’m just confused on what I missed with flying there and driving back…

Awe, you drove right through my little hometown! I’m the town 30 minutes before you got to Mesquite! Road trips with kids can be tough! We drove 5,000 miles between Thanksgiving and New Year’s! It was exhausting! I love that we now live in Hawaii and are very limited in road trip options!!

Reply

Sounds like you had a good trip, looking forward to hearing about the new place!!

Reply

I’m so looking forward to my first run after a very long break due to injury. My last run was 25km on Jan 18. Then I tore my meniscus and ACL. Knee reconstruction and a few hurdles later and I still can’t run yet.

Great plan for the road trip by the dynamic duo! Can’t wait to hear about your new place and the next exciting chapter in your life. Your one amazing person :)

Super mom! You deserved that diet coke!

I lòve stopping at the gas station for Cheetos and Ginger ale. And then I can drive anywhere. I have a 18 hour road trip to Wisconsin in two weeks, in a bus with kids. I’ll be armed with my snacks.
