Something I am very proud of.

I am very proud of the fact that I have mastered Brooke’s bun.  I can barely brush my hair but when it comes to Brooke’s hair, I have it all figured out.

IMG 3757

My Little Pony stole the show for the object that kept Brooke’s attention the longest on the airplane.

IMG 3776

We left the house at 6 a.m. and got to Louisville at 5:30 pm (because of some flight delays).  Brooke was a little exhausted by the time we got there.

IMG 3781

My brother, his wife and his oldest little girl.  They are pretty much the best ever.

IMG 3779

I got to see where my brother works:)  This is one of the planes that he flies.

IMG 3782

They drove me and Brooke straight to my brother’s favorite restaurant in Louisville.  Havana Rumba… a delicious Cuban restaurant.

I wish I could put that garlic butter on everything I eat from this point forward.

IMG 3786

I told my brother to order our meals because I hate making decisions but I told him that I did need guacamole at some point.

A raspberry shake and guac with plantain chips!

IMG 3788

And the star of the night… fried plantains and some crazy delicious meat and vegetable dish.  I can see why this is his favorite spot.

IMG 3789

This is my first time ever being to Kentucky and I can’t get over how gorgeous it is and last night I had my first experience with lightning bugs, we don’t have those in Utah.

I am glad my nieces think of me as HRG:)

IMG 3793

Kazoozles waiting on the kitchen counter for me.

IMG 3795

And after all of the kids went to bed we watched this hilarious show.  Absolutely hilarious.

PS THIS article offers GREAT advice for marathon recovery!  Even though we may feel good after a marathon and like we aren’t sore, there is still damage that has occurred that needs to recover before it is a good idea to run again.  They said that research shows that it takes TWO full weeks for muscles to return to full strength after a marathon.

Check it out if you are looking for a great way to get back to training after the marathon (this is what I will be using when I start running back up again!)

Off to Churchill Downs for some horse races!

What is the best part of your Thursday going to be?

How many different states have you been to!?!

Who has been to a Kentucky Derby or any horse races?

Do you live in a humid area?  If yes, HOW DO YOU RUN IN THE HUMIDITY!?!

-Nope.. super dry in Utah and I noticed the humidity in Kentucky the second I got off of the plane!

I am going to six flags great adventure with the niece and nephew today. Roller coasters! Woo hoo! It’s very humid here in ny and nj. Going up to 87 too. When I see my first fire fly I know summer has officially begun. I have been to about 30-35 stated so far. Utah is not one of them yet. But I know I will get there soon. I want to ski there.
Love the mastered bun!!!

Reply

I live in Ohio so definitely very humid here in the summer. I can’t believe you don’t have lightening bugs in Utah!! We used to spend summer nights catching them in jars (and then…releasing them. Exciting I know). Also boys used to step on them and scrape with their foot it makes a neon streak on the sidewalk, but I never did that it made me sad.

Reply

I went to the Derby last year and it was so much fun! Kentucky is gorgeous. Have so much fun with your family!

Best part of my day – getting to go visit Newton Running headquarters this afternoon!

Uh no, Denver is super duper dry and my hair shows it. hello no volume.

Reply

I love Newton Running!!

And yes. Denver. We have no moisture in our air. Not just my hair. I have crocodile skin. So not friendly.

Reply

Ditto. I am in Loveland and have dry skin and hair. I do love how the humidity makes you look so much younger :)

Reply

yes! And Loveland. So pretty. I have to load on the moisturizer. I should just buy stock in it. So wrong.

Reply

Have fun with your Kentucky family, those signs are so cute!

I live in Florida. Humidity, hi. Summer months are the worst so I run really slow (not on purpose) or just pick the treadmill. And my make-up melts. And if you’ve lived there your whole life you still don’t get used to it. On the brighter side (ha!), I love living near the ocean and I don’t think my body could survive a winter like yours, so I’ll just continue living the humid life :)

Reply

Yeah, you’ve def mastered Brooke’s bun! I can never make mine look that good!

Best part of my Thursday will be plopping on my couch this evening. Being 35 weeks pregnant is catching up to me!

I live in Boston which is super humid in the summer. The humidity levels are highest in the morning which is my also my favorite time to run so I’ll just slow my pace down and bring LOTS of water. Or if it’s 95-100% humidity, I just skip the run and head to the gym or run in the evening. :)

Reply

I just just in Lousville about two weeks ago! I do live in a humid area, and I don’t run very well in it at all!

Reply

That Cuban food sounds amazing- I need to make plantains asap!

I live in Maryland and the humidity is just hideous. Ne morning I went over to my friend’s house to run at like 99% humidity. When I got to work later I realized my skirt was wet- my running shorts had soaked my car seat and then soaked my work clothes- with sweat. Yeah. You basically just hate life and run really slow.

Today’s another 99% humidity day and the best part will be when I’m done working in a non air conditioned building and can go home and stop sweating!

Reply

I grew up in Indiana and now live in Virginia, so I have never escaped hot and humid summers. Running in the humidity is not the least bit fun, but you just do it. Even though the mornings are very humid, I still prefer to battle the stickiness versus the blazing sun/heat of the afternoon. Cold showers or jumping in the pool post-run are my favorites.

Have a great time visiting your family and enjoy Kentucky!

Reply

Best part of my day is picking my dog up from animal hospital to come home from her surgery! I used to live in Chicago and the summer is just sooo humid, I would never have run outside, but luckily it’s a lot less humid in England! Have fun in Kentucky :)

Reply

We recently started going to the horse races once in a while, and got kind of hooked! They’re free at our track, unless there is some special event or competition, and one of my running group friends actually owns a horse she races there. So that’s always fascinating.
Brooke was a trooper for such a long day.

Reply

I went to both the Derby and the Oaks when I was in college — both were super fun, and I’m jealous that you’re headed out to Churchill Downs today. Have fun in Kentucky and try not to drown in the southern humidity!

Reply

Lightning bugs are one of my favorite things abut summer. Just seeing them makes me think of being a kid and catching lightning bugs while running trough the sprinklers :)

Reply

Welcome to Louisville! It’s a little weird to see places so familiar to me (airport, Havana Rumba, etc.) on here – enjoy your visit! You guys might enjoy the zoo (it’s small, though), the kid’s Science Center, the Louisville Slugger museum, etc. Hope you have a nice time while you’re here!
And, I’ve been to every Derby (or Oaks – day before Derby) the last 10 years or so. Fun times!

Reply

Impractical Jokers is ridiculously funny! I just discovered it a couple months ago and it cracks me up!!!!

I live in a humid area and I’m mostly used to it I guess… but some days I do have to do my easy runs 30 seconds slower than my normal easy pace just so I don’t die!

Reply

Best part of Thursday is that USA IS GOING TO WIN IN THE WORLD CUP TODAY!!!!!!! WOO HOO! #ibelievethatwewillwin

I have been to SO many states, Kentucky being one of them, very pretty!

I live in the south (Charlotte, NC) and yes, welcome to the humidity! It rained yesterday afternoon and then when I left work at 5 pm it was probably 100% humidity, no joke. And yes, we crazy Southerners run in it! Have a great trip!!

Reply

It’s super humid here in Maryland, and super early in the mornings too. I like to run in the mornings before noon and on super warm/humid days I go in the evenings after the little man goes to bed, but just around the neighborhood for safety. I love evening running with all the lightning bugs all around.. it’s pretty. Until you run into them… literally. Nothing like a bug covered shirt to make you feel awesome.

Reply

Plantain chips with guac sounds amazing!! Never heard of that combo before. Today we’re picking up a new vehicle! Very excited for the hubs to have a dependable car. Enjoy your trip!

Reply

I lived in KY for a couple of months during a college internship — if you’re in Louisville you MUST (I mean it’s life or death here) eat at Lynn’s Paradise Cafe. My favorite KY running spot would be Cherokee Park — gorgeous and shady for those HOT KY days! Enjoy beautiful KY!

Reply

Kirsten, unfortunately, Lynn’s shut down a couple of years ago. But yes to the best running through Cherokee Park!!

Reply

Oh my goodness, I am devastated!! It was hands down the best breakfast in town.

Reply

I know. Those biscuits were insane! But now we have Toast on Market, Wild Eggs, Highland Morning, Wiltshire Pantry and Atlantic No. 5. Just to name a few… if you are ever back for a visit. :-)

Reply

So weird seeing you in my hometown! Make sure they take you to Comfy Cow for some ice cream. How long are you in the area?

Reply

So glad you survived the plane ride!! That makes me less anxious about my five hour plane ride with a 22 month old coming up next month.

I live in Maryland and it is SUPER humid. I think you get used to it, like you have gotten used to running at a higher elevation. It does make marathon day so much easier if you’ve been training all summer in the humidity and your marathon is in October and all the humidity is gone…if you are looking for positives.

I’ve never been to Kentucky but I’ve been to a lot of States in my lifetime – although I don’t remember all of them. I haven’t been to some middle States like Nebraska, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Colorado, Utah, Montana, Wisconsin, Ohio, Wyoming, Idaho, and Michigan. And then I’ve never been to Alaska or Hawaii. There are so many places I’d still love to see in the US!

Reply

Today is the LAST Thursday of work until september… wahoo.. we are having a carnival for the students…. can’t wait

I have been all over the North East and South East… Texas, Nevada, Arizona, and Hawaii

Well we went to the Belmont Stakes when we lived in Long Island and we went to Belmont and Aqueduct Tracks a lot and we live 40 minutes away from Saratoga Race Track….it’s ALWAYS a good time!

It has been sooo humid here! Running is tough, you basically have to suck it up and deal. I try to go early in the AM when it’s not “as bad”. Nothing good happens in the humidity… my hair doesn’t function, my make up looks terrible and my body won’t run…grrrrr

Reply

I can not believe you’ve never seen lightening bugs! Growing up that was one of the BEST things about summer! Now my kids love to chase fireflies as they call it and capture/release them.

I grew up living in TN and now live in Northern AL…both are soooo humid! It’s no fun at all to run in the humidity even at 4:30am! ha.

Enjoy your visit! KY is very beautiful!

Reply

It’ veryyyyyy humid in PA. I slow down, take water, listen to my body (which usually means not doing more than 3-5 miles depending) and if I need to, take a/c breaks mid run!

Reply

New York is terribly humid in the summer. I don’t know how I run in it which is exactly what I was thinking this morning as I sweat myself silly out there. I have never been to Kentucky but My Little Pony was my favorite when I was little!

Reply

The best part of today is it’s my birthday!!!!!
No lightning bugs? I thought they were everywhere!
I live in MD and it has been 90-98% humidity a lot! Yesterday when I ran it was 85 degrees and 95% humidity!!! I just let myself stop when I need to do or slow down and drink like it is my job when I get home….but actually I have a pretty high tolerance for the heat and very low tolerance for the cold :)
Enjoy KY!

Reply

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!

Reply

I’ve read your blog forever but I’m not a big commenter. But I couldn’t resist since you are in my city! Welcome to Louisville! I’m sure your brother will make sure you see all the highlights. My brother used to give tours at the Derby museum which is a great way to see behind the barns where they keep all the horses and the science museum has great hands on stuff for kids.

The humidity here is no joke. My hair lives in a pony tail during the summer months. Not even worth the effort to attempt to dry it.

Most locals avoid the derby like the plague and go the days before it on Oaks. I’m really enjoying the night racing these days – not so miserable sitting in the cheap seats when the sun goes down.

Oh and someone mentioned Orange Leaf for yogurt the other day in a comment we have those here so you should definitely try it during your visit. It’s my favorite!

Have a great trip!

Reply

Her bun looks adorable!! Glad you had a great flight!

Enjoy your time with your family :)

Reply

When I run in the humidity (mostly everyday) I stick gels in my gel. Since my hair puffs up and becomes afro like…they tend to stay lodged in there for when I need them. In reality just drink lots of water and realize your pace will slow. (That’s how I run in the humidity).

Reply

Perfect bun! My daughter is a dancer, so I know perfect bun when I see one!

I live in Virginia and it is humid. I either run for distance (not time) in the summer or use the treadmill. I have a hard time breathing in the humidity and get hot really fast, so I mostly stay inside.

I have lived in 5 states (Mass, Maine, Indiana, Texas, and VA) and visited at least 13 others. I need to travel more with my daughter so that she gets to see the US.

Now that school is FINALLY out (we went late due to so many snow days), we are hanging out, I’ll run 5-7 miles, make a Target run, and my daughter starts private ballet lessons- she is beyond excited! Oh, we’ll probably watch some soccer, too. Go USA!

Reply

This morning was SO humid for my run and my legs felt like lead, totally dragging. Best part of thurday is heading up to cape cod for RRCA coach training this weekend! Very excited!

Reply

Garlic butter and plantain fries… I’m so jealous!

Reply

Yep, super humid where I live all summer. Mostly you just have to slow down and know that it’s not going to feel great. :)

Reply

To escape Midwestern humidity (I live in Indianapolis) I either have to run at like, 6:30am (haha) or… hit the treadmill. Not gonna lie, I’d rather run in 35 degrees than in the 90 degrees and humidity we’ve been having this week.

Reply

I live in Florida where it is jungle-like humid about 11 months out of the year! You get used to it…sort of. Been to the Kentucky 11 times, love it! Churchill Downs is ah-mazing. Have a great time in Kentucky.

Reply

Welcome to the great city of Louisville! I have an almost 21 month old son and live in the Highlands area so please e-mail me if you want to meet up for a playdate/stroller walk or a late night fro yo/best ice cream you’ll ever eat date. I’d love to show you some great parks in Louisville if you’re family is tied up during the day. Louisville is such a fantastic city so I’m glad you get to experience a little bit about it, even if you do have to fight our humidity. :-)

Reply

Oh and please, please, please, if you get to do nothing else, eat a doughnut from Nord’s Bakery. You will thank me forever. Best doughnut you will ever eat in your life. The glazed “pretzel” doughnut, “French fry” and maple glazed doughnut topped with a strip of bacon are the top dogs for sure.

And Comfy Cow ice cream is the best in the city. Cross my heart.

Reply

Ahhh!! I used to live in Louisville and LOVED Havana Rumba. Great food!!! Enjoy the city (not the humidity, I know… right?!). If you get a chance, have your brother take you to the Highlands and to Cherokee Park (also in the Highlands). The park is beautiful and you can walk the loop (I think it’s close to 3 miles if I remember correctly) with Brooke. Those used to be my old running grounds. :) Have fun!! xo

Reply

What a great picture of your brother and his family! I live about 1.5 hours north of Louisville in southern Indiana and the humidity is BRUTAL. I’ve lived here all my life and still hate running in it. The key is to not think about how unbelievably drenched you are :) The last 2 days I’ve been a slave to the treadmill because I just dread being miserable outside! Have fun here in the wonderful Midwest!

Reply

Never been to KY. Love that your family calls you HRG… that’s when you know youve made it big lol. Glad Brooke survived the flight.

Reply

I have a great plan for running in the humidity! I don’t. Simple as that.

Reply

I love Louisville! My best friend from college lives there. Go to Homemade Ice Cream & Pie Kitchen for the BEST pie in the world. You’ll love it. I highly recommend the derby pie! I make my friend take me there every time I go. Enjoy :)

Reply

My brother was telling me about that place! I will make sure to get the derby pie! Thank you!

Reply

I used to gallop racehorses at Churchill…Louisville is one of my favorite places in the entire world. :) Enjoy every second!

Reply

That is so so cool!

Reply

How sweet of your brother and his family! Have fun in Kentucky! I am excited about today because my Dad is coming over to watch the U.S.A soccer game with me, and then friends are coming over later this afternoon!

Reply

One thing I’m looking forward to today is watching the USA/Germany World Cup game today while I’m at the fitness center (I’m hoping to catch the second half!). Baltimore is very humid during the summer…it usually feels like your going into a hot shower when you step outside. Hope you’re enjoying KY!

Reply

Brooke is so adorable <3 I love her bun!

Reply

Enjoy your trip!

I just moved back to a very humid area a few weeks ago and it is TOUGH! Sometimes you just have to catch yourself a break and take it easy. It takes your body a bit of time to get used to the humidity. And sometimes, if I really don’t feel like dealing with it I just head on the treadmill!

How sweet of your brother and his family! That is an awesome sign!

Reply

OMG, her bun looks so good! Did you use a sock- like a baby sock? I’m so impressed! My sock buns don’t look anywhere near that great.

Reply

I LOVE Impractical Jokers! My husband and his old roommate got me into it, it is painfully funny! Today I’m looking forward to having a CHILL night at home. Those are rare for me.

I’m in Texas, and I ran at 5am this morning and the humidity was 81%, but it’s been at least 90% all week. And it is SO HARD. It makes me feel like I’m just barely slugging along. I just keep telling myself it’s going to pay off when the fall and winter (finally) come.

Reply

Yeah…humidity…not cool. not cool. I lived in CO for college and the zero humidity was freaking AMAZING. Now I’m back to living in Philly and it’s oppressive. Woof.

Best part of my Thursday will be seeing a good friend who is moving on Saturday :(((

I have been to MANY a state. I’m missing the Pacific Northwest (I know) (WA, OR, ID, MT), the deep south (LA, AL, MS), Alaska, Hawaii, and maybe a few more but I don’t want to count!

Reply

Glad you arrived safely! I was in KY a few years ago for a business trip and thought it was beautiful. I’ve been to only 17 states. I had a goal to run a race in each, but it started to get expensive!

We’re having some humidity now (in Boston), but it’s supposed to leave tonight. On humid days, I usually choose swimming or spin, or I’ll go to my favorite park that always has a breeze and go for a long walk or a short run.

Totally unrelated… Not sure anyone else is having this problem, or it could be that I’m reading your blog on an iPad, but there’s a Cafe Rio border that is covering up a lot of the text in your posts.

Enjoy your time with your family!

Reply

I’ve never been there and have always wanted to!! My friends themed my surprise bday once around the Kentucky Derby…we were fancy dresses and hats… It was a fun day!!! :)

Brooke seriously has the best hair ever!
Have fun, can’t wait to read more culinary delights:)

Welcome to the South!! Lightning bugs and oh, the humidity! I live in Tennessee, and the humidity definitely makes running more difficult.

The best part of my day is meeting a friend at the park to workout! Then obviously watching

my comment sent oops! Watching USA play. :)

We love Impractical Jokers!!! Hilarious!

Those plantain chips look awesome!! TJ’s has some pretty yummy ones I’ll get when the craving hits.
So, get this, I’m having a chocolate tasting party tonight -yum! Which also means I’m cleaning the house today.
Not too many states -all of them from the Rockies west, and most of the east coast ones, but I’m missing most of the ones in the middle.
Humidity: another reason I love Western Washington. Not too dry, and not sticky!

Reply

My mom used to work at Pimlico racetrack when I was little so I have been to quite a few races. Love them!

It has been very humid here in MD.

Brooke is your twinner in that second pic. She looks just like you.

Have a wonderful day with your family!

Another Kazoozles lover!!! That candy is just the best!

It looks like you ad Brooke will have a great time in Kentucky. Your nieces are so cute with all the sweet welcome signs.

I live in Cali but we’re visiting friends in Houston. Holy cow, the humidity is insane. I feel like a “real” runner now after running in this humidity. I run slower and I look like I’ve showered when I get back from my run. Ick!

I used to work at the horse races in MT when I was a teenager. Concessions. I still hear the music in my head. ha.
I can’t imagine how amazing it would be to attend the Derby.
Have a wonderful time with your brother and his family. Eat donuts. And pie. And yeah yeah…that healthy stuff, too.

Reply

It can get really humid here in the summer, and it is NOT FUN to run in. But the alternative is being in the gym, which is not better by any means! You just power through it. It can be rough on my asthma if it’s too hot and humid, thank goodness for albuterol!

Reply

That’s so crazy to me that you don’t have lightening bugs! I guess I just assumed they were everywhere. I have sooooo many childhood memories of going outside after dinner and catching them in jars! It was so fun, haha I still do it.

Reply

I get a free soup from Hale and Hearty because I filled up the punch card.

I grew up in Kansas and it was SO humid, always. When I moved to Provo for school, I loved being able to have my sweat dry so fast after a run! BUT the altitude was a killer!

Those plantain chips look amazing!

I live in Baltimore and we get awful humidity. I guess you sort of get used to it, but it always makes running feel 1000x harder.
Brooke’s hair looks so pretty!
Enjoy your trip!

How sweet is Brooke asleep in her stroller. Precious. Have such a fun trip, Janae. Looks like you are off to a great start!

Colorado is SO dry and I don’t know how people live/workout in humidity.
I ran in Florida last year (and it was early morning) and I pretty much felt like I was going to die the entire time (and it was just a 2.5 mile run!!). Wow.

Best part of Thursday already happened. Entire workout done in the pool today and I feel amazing. Water is so healing!!!

Reply

I love the welcome sign and flowers from your family. Pure energy and love right there.

I am really looking forward to the soccer game this AM. My husband stayed home from work this morning so we can watch it together. It’s a rainy day here, so perfect for lounging.

I lived in Houston for a few years and never got over how humid it was. I would shower, get cleaned up, walk outside, and then need to shower again. At least the winters were somewhat nice.

Reply

Omg Brooke’s bun is just perfect. You may need to start doing my hair for me….Ah! My boyfriend is currently in Tennessee, and he sent me a video of lightening bugs, they are so cool!! I’m pretty sure I could just stare at those for a while.

I’m glad you had a relatively uneventful flight, have a great time!

Lightening bugs are awesome, we have them in New York! Have fun with your brother and his family!

All that FOOD! YUM! Looks like you guys are having a blast so far! I could never do the humidity. I’ve only ever lived in dry places, and whenever I go to humid places, I always feel like I’m melllllting! Haha. I do love that my hair and skin feel glorious though. Have fun today!

I love Kentucky – I’ve done a few races there, and I never cease to be amazed by the state’s beauty and hospitality. When we were in Louisville, we ate at Ramsi’s Cafe of the World and it was AMAZING. I’m a Cincinnati native and Skyline Chili devotee, and there’s a few spots in L-ville. Just sayin’.

As far as the humidity goes, it sucks. I just pack a towel in the car to wipe off with and drink lots of Nuun.

Have Em take you to Simply Thai. Best ever! And give those people the biggest hug from me!! Miss my Lagrange family!

Yes! My husband and I get Simply Thai carry-out every Thursday, so good!

Welcome to the south! (I’m in Birmingham, AL) Running in high humidity often makes you feel like you’re breathing through a straw and it pretty much sucks. Training is extra “not fun” from May-September/October (so basically the entire training cycle for a fall marathon!) Expect your pace to slow a little bit and stay hydrated.

I just counted and I’ve been to 27 states–including Kentucky!– (not counting states where I’ve only stopped on a layover) I definitely would like to make it to all 50.

Reply

Enjoy Kentucky!! I live in Ohio and love driving through the hills. If you get the chance go to Mark’s Feed Store! They have the best BBQ, fried pickles, and awesome buttermilk pies. I run in the early mornings or late at night to deal with the humidity.

I’m headed to WI today to see my Mom. She had heart surgery in April. I’m definitely not looking forward to the humidity. It will be a huge change from dry Arizona!

I don’t mind the heat, but when the humidity starts tipping past 65% percent it feels pretty swampy when I’m out for a run.

I’ve only been to KY one time! I can’t wait to hear about what it’s like there. Brooke’s bun is PERFECT!

Running in humidity is no fun. You just have to slow down and be ready for your lungs to feel heavy. It was 75% humidity the last time I ran…I have a feeling it will be the same tonight when I hit the trail. :-/

Reply

I do run in humidity! DC is crazy humid, and before this I lived in New Orleans. I have a few tips on my blog for running in humidity, but the gist of it is I run early or do the treadmill.

I actually went to my first horse race last weekend and had no idea what I was doing but placed a bet and picked the winning horse :) Super fun times. Also – no lightening bugs in Utah?! We used to catch them as little kids and put them into a jar as soon as it got dark out. In hindsight, this was not the nicest thing to do to the bugs, but the jar lit up and look really cool :)

First time comment!

I am from Ohio and live in Texas. Last year for Spring Break (I’m a teacher), my friend and I went to Red River Gorge in KY. It was absolutely beautiful hiking :) The views were great and we definitely hiked up some steep inclines!

Reply

Lightning bugs are so wonderful! I am seriously contemplating a cross-country road trip next summer so my kids can experience them. I LOVE them!

36 or 37 states I’ve visited. Definitely some in more depth than others. My visit to Kentucky was super fleeting…just a drive over a bridge from Cincinnati. As I recall, it was a pretty sketchy area.

Have a fantastic time hanging with your brother and his family :)

Reply

I live in Iowa whee it can get crazy humid in the summer months. Running early in the morning helps a little but you can definitely still feel the thickness of the air. I’m in Colorado right now and went for a run this morning, it felt great! I felt like I hardly even got sweaty when usually I’m dripping before the first mile. Have a great time with your family!

Best part of my day was my run, but that’s tied with the farmers market tonight :)
I live in the dry high mountains…I could never run in humidity and admire everyone who does!

Reply

Lived in KY all my life, same county! For 35 years! Yes humidity is a killer!!! Either early morning running or night! Lightening bugs are the greatest! My kids love to catch them! KY Derby is the greatest! Next April/May you will have to come back and visit and run the marathon or half and then stay to go to the Derby! I have been every year for the past 5!

I love love love Impractical Jokers! It takes a lot to make me laugh, and that show makes me bust a gut!
The best part of my Thursday is finishing off my trail racing series. I also think I have been to about 20 states – but here in the Northeast they tend to just blend together. I live just 10 minutes from Maine and 30 minutes from Vermont!

I love that My Little Pony is still in existence! I had one very similar to the one that Brooke is holding when I was her age (or a little older since I remember it). And that was 30 years ago! My Little Pony’s awesomeness endures.

Did your brother catch a running/workout bug? He looks super fit!

I also hate making decisions and will ask someone to just order for me :)

J, I know you have an obsession with bread =). When you’re back in AZ, ask your fam to take you to Lucille’s (bbp) at tempe market place. They have this apple (cinnamon) butter that they give you to put on some freshly baked bread (scones)… so good! If you get to try it, let me know how it stacks up.

I’ve been in 26 states. For the first 17 years of my IT job I programmed and installed voice reco solutions. You know, where you “speak” your answers when you call customer service…shhhhh… I’ve been to Louisville and had my first Hot Brown! Stay blessed stay fierce!

I can not stand humidity- but that’s probably because I live in northern California where it’s just really dry, too! I think humidity is one of those things you just get used to. If I lived in Hawaii, I’d totally get used to it no problem. ;) Brooke’s bun is SO CUTE! The best part of my Thursday? Welllll, it’s my birthday, so the entire day is the best. :) Plus, it’s my first birthday with my baby, so it’s pretty special!

Please do a video of that cute bun! I have a 14 month old daughter, she currently has minimal hair but someday I want to put that cute bun in her hair!

That bun is so cute! I wish my mom did my hair that cute when I was a kid haha. And I also <3 plantain chips – Trader Joe's makes really good ones!!

I can’t believe you’re in Kentucky! I’m totally star-struck, LOL. I live in Cincinnati, Ohio, and it is DEFINITELY humid here. As in like near the 100% humidity mark almost every day. I have resorted to running at 5 in the morning….

I am so excited reading about your adventures in Louisville because that is where I live. Totally cool to come here and see all the familiar sights of home! I have lived in Louisville my whole life but have never gone to the actual Ky Derby. The Derby Festival marathon takes a lap through the infield which is cool. Maybe someday you will come back and run it?!

Love, love, love Churchill Downs! Please go on a tour of a horse farm while you are there… they are gorgeous!

It takes me about 2 weeks to get acclimated to the humidity but after that happens it’s the best sweaty running weather ever!
My sister used to live in New Albany IN and worked in Louisville. I’ve been there plenty of times. Great place!

I have driven through Kentucky and been to a wedding in Paducah – it was a beautiful drive to the wedding and an adorable city! Beautiful part of the country!

St. Louis has crazy humidity (often times 90+% in the mornings when I run) and we have horse races! Horse races are super fun – humidity – NOT SO MUCH! I carry a little wash cloth when I run – to wipe the sweat from my glasses and arms. Also – hair in a bun – ponytails get too sweaty! Humidity is rough! Drink Drink Drink!

I’m from/live Kentucky and have been to the Kentucky Derby! One year, I was even a Kentucky Derby Princess and got to sit up on Millionaire’s Row for the race! My husband’s father has a horse owner’s pass and each year we sit on the backside and basically “tailgate” the entire day. It’s such a fun time of year! Derby is the best! Enjoy Kentucky!!!!

fried plaintain chips are the best ever!!! Bet they’d be heavenly smeared with pb! Running in the humidity is a no go. The only way to get a run in is to go in the am around 6 am when it’s still a bit cooler out. Love Brooke’s bun! I would look so woof if I tried that!

Yay! It looks like you’re having a blast!! I love the signs :)

I have a possible personal training job opportunity meeting today, so that will be the best part of my Thursday…I hope. Cross your fingers for me!

Ahhhhhhhhh good luck!

Best part of my Thursday is going to be lunch because I get THAT excited about food (or my life is just that boring…?)

LA is obviously superrrrr dry, but when I vacation in Massachusetts and run it’s like running through molasses. I’m not sure why, but I really enjoy it. I guess I just love sweating insane amounts and not being able to breath and almost dying when I run. PS brooke is adorable!

The best part of my Thursday is going to be going to the gym with hubby after work. I love working out with him!

I’ve been to 15 states but hubby and I are trying to plan out traveling around the country next year. Yup, leaving our jobs, cashing in my 401k, taking our dog, getting a trailer and heading out. Scary yet exciting stuff! Hey, you only live once!

I live in NY State and yes, it gets very humid here. I don’t run in it if it gets too hot. I would say high 70’s is my limit if there’s a lot of humidity. I’ll go to the gym/treadmill instead. I don’t want be passed out on the street from something silly like that. :)

Have a great time visiting your family!

I think you need quick video on how to do Brooke’s hair! I’ve actually never seen a lightening bug…have a fun trip!

First off, garlic butter is Ah-mazing!!
Second, how in the world do you do that bun?? I have two little girls and need a tutorial. Please? You’re awesome!

The best part of today is it’s my baby sister’s bday! She’s 11 now…can’t believe it!!

I’ve been to 8 different states, but would love to see so many more.

The only thing I know about the derby is that people wear big hats and use it as an excuse to day-drink. Clearly I was not cut out for that life haha.

It’s pretty dry up here in NorCal. But I would probably take running in 80° and humidity over the 100° dry heat we have here!

This is random as I’m not usually a big commenter, but I got excited when I saw the Cuban food. I’m Cuban and that food looks fab! Guac isn’t typically Cuban, but the rest of the stuff looks just like my mom’s cooking! And just as a fun fact, the meat dish looks like Ropa Vieja which translates to “Old Clothes” because it’s all shredded. :)

Hi! You probably don’t remember, but you helped me out many tines when I struggled with stress fractures! Anyway, I’m from louisville and just wanted to tell you some of the BEST restaurants you have to go to! Im sure your brother knows them but I had to let you know :)
Definitely check out Mussels and Burgers, hammerheads, Game, cafe lou lou, guacamole, and mojitos tapas if you can! If you had to pick only one of those, deffffinitely go for Mussels and Burgers :) enjoy your time here!! Im so glad you tried havana rumba! The old owners of that restaurant currently own Mussels and Burgers, as well as guacamole so im sure you will love it!

Favorite thing about this Thursday: Finally getting to a yoga class AND it was my last day tutoring students for the summer, woohoo!
Humidity: Oh yes (Missouri), and it sucks. I do the majority of my runs on the treadmill right now which is a major boo! If only I could wake up and run first thing, but I’m not quite there yet;)

Reply

I’ve never been to Kentucky but would love to visit! I’ve heard it’s beautiful!

I live in Iowa and the humidity is crazy. You just get used to it and push through. And since it also gets super hot, I usually run early in the morning or indoors. I heart the treadmill, so that doesn’t bother me!

I’m training for my first marathon and I love that my schedule included the first two weeks after the marathon! Excellent points about recovery time!

Reply

I run in the humidity with a frowny face, mostly.

Reply

I grew up in TN and CT and there is definitely some serious humidity in both places. I’m currently battling humidity right now. Luckily, I’m mostly running on the treadmill, so I’m avoiding the humidity for the most part.

Hope you have a great visit with your family!!

Louisville has some great running spots. I know you are taking some time off, but if you visit again would love to share some routes with you!

Reply

This is my first summer in NY, oh my goodness I don’t like the humidity. I handle it by not handling it at all. The treadmill and I are becoming great friends.

Reply

I’ve been to the Kentucky Derby!! I went when Blue Bells died!
Man what’s gotten into me? I’m so extremely, unusually eager to share this that I am actually commenting on a post of more than 100 comments, where you won’t even see this Janae haha. Oh well, makes me feel good!

I’m SO jealous you get to go to a horse race. I cried the first time I saw one.
I hope you tear up too! Have fun!!

Reply

I am swooning so hard at that photo of the guac and plantain chips.

Oh my goodness, I live in Kentucky and I am so close to you! Is it sad that I really want to come to Louisville and wander around hoping to run into you? I will probably never be in Utah. I hope you enjoy our state — I love it!

Reply

My sister lives in Louisville. And I am addicted to Impractical Jokers. Funniest show ever.

Reply

I have been to 32 states. :-) but Utah isn’t one I’ve been to… I will have to get on that! I live in lexington… Kentucky’s humidity is no joke! I went to the derby in 2011 and it was amazing! Happy Thursday!

Welcome to Kentucky!
Make sure you take a run downtown.
Also take a trip over to the zappos outlet . Always some cheap running stuff there.

Glad you shared that info about recovery! I’m signed up for a marathon in October, but I just had a friend ask if I wanted to one in September – exactly 4 weeks before the one i’m already signed up and training for! I’ve actually – and stupidly really – been contemplating doing them both and pretending like i’m THAT great. This little info tells me NOT to do it. :)

Your dinner looked absolutely delicious!! I’m kind of obsessed with plantains!! :)

Thursdays are my Fridays!

I’ve lived in 8 states and been to maybe all but 12?

Yup, I used to live in Louisville. Looks like your brother flies the ERJ?

Yes, I live in FL. It’s hard. But the temps get higher in Louisville. I went to somewhere in the NE for business and they complained about the so-called humidity that day and us Floridians were like, what humidity? LOL

Reply

Have fun in Kentucky! I used to live in Tennessee and now live in North Carolina so unfortunately I am very used to humid summers. Usually I run first thing in the morning, in the evening when sundown begins, or hit the treadmill to beat the humidity.

I am just now catching up on a lot of your posts! Wedding planning kinda takes over your life!!

If a lightning bug lands on you and lights up it is good luck! And the humidity…………you just learn to deal with it. It is humid all the time, but it is usually bearable if the temp is 75 or below. Right now in Chattanooga, TN it is so humid and we get big summer thunderstorms…………..my run last night had me outrunning dark thunderheads to get home! I remember being out in Idaho and their idea of rain is NOTHING like in the South! As much as I hate the humidity and misquitoes, I LOVE the scenery………………farmland, greenery, and you really should see the Great Smoky Mountains in the fall…………..all you can see is patchworks of color! I will have to send a picture this fall! Have a great week!
