I have taken it upon myself…

That one time my brother and I left the house at 6 a.m. to drive 30 minutes for the best donuts in Lousiville.

IMG 4020

I have taken it upon myself to be your personal finder of the best apple fritter in the United States.  This one was incredible but the coconut donut from Nord’s is the real reason to go there.

IMG 4016

Brooke slept in until 9 a.m.  She NEVER does that.. she has been partying too hard with these cousins of hers.

Brooke just eats the sprinkles off of her donut so I am not going to ask her to review her donut for the blog.

And I am done with donuts for awhile.  I have had plenty between my Seattle trip and now Kentucky:)  Back to normalcy when I get back to Utah on Monday.

IMG 4027

Before trying out my apple fritter I hit up the local YMCA for a good sweatfest.  A bunch of people have asked where I get my strength workouts from…  Google helps me out with this one.  What did people do before the internet?  I just search for whatever muscle groups I want to work out and then choose the one that looks the best.

This one was the winner yesterday and the below move was surprisingly pretty hard especially by the time I got to the third set.  My shoulders wanted to collapse.

Screen Shot 2014 06 28 at 11 24 04 AM

Lunch was at their absolute favorite sandwich shop.  I had a bbq chicken wrap that had coleslaw in it.. genius.

I really lucked out with the world’s best sister-in-laws.  My brothers chose well.  This SIL of mine has been in my life since I was 12.  I like her.

IMG 4032

One of the main reasons that I decided to come to Kentucky this weekend was so that I could go to my niece’s baptism.  I gave a talk at the baptism and like any other time that I have to public speak I was sweating like crazy and my hands were shaking uncontrollably.  Public typing is a lot easier than public speaking;)

IMG 4062

And the grill master nails it again.

IMG 4084

Have a happy happy Sunday and the next post is all about the absolute BEST RACE DAY TIPS!! Get excited.  I think they will help you on your next race!

—————————————————–

Where do you get your strength training routines?  Or do you just come up with them on your own?

Anyone work out at the YMCA!?!  How do you like it?

What is your ‘ideal’ sleep-in time?!

-I would love to wake up at 8:15 everyday.  That sounds heavenly.

Public speaking—> are you good at it or is it not one of your favorite things!?!

-As a teacher I loved it (does that count as public speaking?) but it is kind of scary for me to do it in any other circumstance.

Those donuts look amazing! Off I go on my 12 mile long run :)

Reply

I hope you had an amazing long run!!!

Reply

It was pretty hot (in the 80’s at 8:30AM!) and I mapped out a hilly route, but it went well! It was my last long run before my first ever half marathon in two weeks — Missoula, here I come!

You’ve been such an inspiration to me; thank you for being awesome :)

Reply

I used to only work out at the YMCA but the one here in NJ is too far away. I just work out at anytime fitness now which is nice since it’s open..anytime.

I use the Nike training club app on iPhone. I find it nice because you can do 15 minute targeted workouts.

Reply

I really like my local YMCA. My ideal sleep time is 7:30…but unfortunately I rarely sleep past 6am…

Reply

My ideal sleep-in time is 8:30 :) The apple fritter looks heavenly!

Reply

I wish I could sleep until 7 every day. But the whole work thing means I need to wake up by 4:30 everyday so I can squeeze in my workouts.

Reply

I would love to first open my eyes at 7 am but I am always up way before that! My strength training routine usually just comes from all of the techniques I have learned over the years from group fitness classes and a bout with a trainer years ago. It works for me, I think lol.

Reply

I’m taking notes because my brother lives in Louisville, too, and I need ot know where to get donuts next time we visit!

Brooke gets cuter and cuter every day!

Reply

Thanks Ali! I hope you are having a great Sunday!

That is great news about your niece, yay! :)

I get a lot of my workouts from Pinterest. I’ll modify them most of the time, and sometimes I’ll do a couple different ones … I like to hit total body when I strength train. I’ve never tried that move you posted, will do!

I prefer to wake up before 9 on the weekends. Any later and I feel like I’ve missed a part of my day! Which is weird b/c most of the time all I do is lay around haha.

As far as public speaking, I find that if I talk really loud it makes me feel more confident. I’m left with a deaf audience, but hey I survived.

Reply

Pinterest has some great workouts!

I really don’t mind public speaking. I think it’s kind of fun. I was the same as a teacher, loved it. When I started presenting to staff more, it felt just like teaching.

Reply

My kids are still rockin their Christmas pj’s too! They’ve grown so much since then, though, that the tops are too short and half of their stomach shows!
I actually don’t mind public speaking except that my voice gets shaky so I sound more nervous than I really am.
I would love to sleep in til 8. That sounds like an absolute dream!

Reply

I use YouTube for workout/strength moves.

No YMCA where I live.

Ideal sleep in time would be around 7-8.

I’m fine in front of 100 students, but I get super nervous in front of my peers.

Reply

I’ve used the New Rules of Lifting for Women program and it was really great. The author gives clear instructions for each move and an easy to understand lifting plan. It’s a couple of months long but well worth the time. I saw huge improvements in my running, as well as definition forming in my arms/legs. Now, a couple of years later, I’m using another of his books and love it even more (NROL Supercharged). Check it out!!

Reply

I’ve never heard of New Rules of Lifting for Women–thanks for sharing!

Fritter and grilled pineapple looks amazing. Brooke will be pooped on the ride home….you have that to look forward to. I just use my plethora of fitness DVD’S. So many great strength training workouts, or if I’m at the gym, I can always resort to my Body For Life moves. I would wake up at 7 if I could sleep in. My body just doesn’t work that way. Public typing….I like the way you worded that! #nailedit Safe travels home!

Reply

Ahh Brooke is so adorable munching on her donut!! Also, an apple fritter sounds delicious right now…may need to venture out for that one.

I usually get my strength routines from Shape or Women’s Health Mag! I like to mix and match some moves depending on how I’m feeling that day, but I think maybe I’d see better results if I focused on one muscle group per day.

I absolutely hate public speaking. Whenever I have to present in class, I freeze up, my words won’t come out, I’ll stutter, I’ll forget what I’m saying, my hands shake, it’s just a mess! Although maybe this is just because I know the professor is evaluating me so I’m nervous about the grade…

I hope you have a wonderful Sunday!! Looking forward to the race tips!!

Reply

I am excited for your race day tips!! I had a race yesterday and a few more coming up soon so am always looking for more tips :)

If I could sleep in until 7:30 every day I would be happy but I’m up at 530-6 to workout and take care of my toddler.

I am useless when it comes to public speaker (despite having a job where I speak for a living!!!) I get so nervous and usually end up rambling!

Reply

I do Blogilates videos at home and usually take strength classes at the gym. Sometimes I’ll just go in there with no plan and usually end up getting a really great workout.

My ideal sleep in time is 10:00!

One of my hugest fears in life is public speaking. As in, full on hyperventilation, shaking, sweating etc. It’s ridiculous how scared it makes me, especially because it’s something so insignificant in the grand scheme of things!

Reply

Oh man, is that grilled pineapple? I am drooling! SO GOOD.

I agree with you a wake up time of 8ish would be the PERFECT sleeping in. I wake up at 4:30 every day so that would give me TONS of extra sleep.

Reply

Girl you get up so so so early!

Reply

Mmmmm sleep-in time would be any time that is 8.5 hours after I fell asleep!

Reply

I love public speaking. The only thing I have ever won is a state speech competition in hs. So much cooler to win running races like you ;).

I like nike fit for strength. More body weight stuff then weights, but beginner is still a challenge for me.

Reply

I think winning a state speech competition is pretty awesome, too :) Seriously–public speaking is not something many people have a knack for!

Reply

My ideal ‘sleep in’ time is 8:00am, but I usually end up waking up around 7-7:30am on the days I can sleep in. I just can’t stop thinking about all of the stuff (like long runs) I need to get done!

I HATE public speaking. I get so scared, which is dumb because most (if not all) of the people listening to you have no reason to judge and usually they’re interested in the information.

Reply

Everything I know….I learned from Google!

Reply

Google knows all!

Reply

Okay, first of all–I think that if I did those seated DB external rotations….my shoulder would pop off :) How did they go for you? You didn’t say anything about your shoulders popping off so something makes me think everything was fine.

I usually come up with my strength training routines on my own but I have also used other blogs, Pinterest, and google before. Sometimes I just need someone to tell me what to do! I also have stolen moves from PUMP before, I do admit.

My ideal sleep-in time is 8 hours after I go to bed :) I can tell I am getting older (the old, old age of almost 25) when I know that I don’t really like going to bed past midnight anymore. I really enjoy being in bed by 10:30 and up by 6:30. I like to be to get things done before work! With that being said, I was in bed until 9:30 today and yesterday. It’s a work in progress…

Have a wonderful Sunday!

Yum, yum, yum. I love donuts!

My idea wake-up time is somewhere between 8-8:30. Unfortunately that rarely gets to happen :(

I used to work out at a YMCA and loved it. Now I just use my apartment complex’s gym because it’s free and convenient.

Reply

I record strength training routines from personal trainers (ie: those “yay you just joined our gym! Here are a few personal training sessions!) to use later. I also really like the Total Body Transformation article in Women’s Health magazine: http://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/body-transformation

You’re welcome! Have fun building those guns! ;)

Reply

After doing two races in two weekends I kind of think you deserved all those donuts! I know after a race I always treat myself a bit :) What would life be like if we couldn’t do that once in a while!!!

My ideal waking time is 10am!! I only ever sleep that late on Sundays but I look forward to it allll week!

Reply

I would LOVE to get to sleep until 8 o’clock. My son makes that impossible though. A YMCA is the first gym I ever worked out in, but that was in my hometown. If I’m doing strength workouts I just kind of make them up as I go. It’s probably things my sister taught me at some point or something I’ve seen online. When it comes to public speaking if I’m comfortable with what I am speaking about then I don’t mind it, but if I don’t know what I’m going to say or don’t fully know the topic then I’m a nervous wreck!

Reply

I absolutely love FitnessBlender.com. They seem to have a little bit of everything!

Favorite time to wake up? probably 730…it’s still quiet outside and I don’t feel like I’ve wasted the day away!

Thank you Courteney for telling me about FitnessBlender! You are the best!

I used to go to the YWCA when I was in univerity. It was super affordable and always empty in the mornings when I went.

My boyfriend helps me come up with some strength training routines, but I definitely use google to find more!

Reply

Oooh- I really love grilled pineapple! YUM!! I used to be terrified of public speaking, but now I really enjoy it and do it as part of my career!

Reply

Google is the BEST for finding workouts! Pinterest is good too :) I gave a speech at my 8th grade recognition last year. It was super scary, but so rewarding!! ps the wrap sounds amazing. Once I got a wrap with fish, cole slaw, and french fries. ALL in the wrap. YUM!

Reply

I’m really weird and love getting up at 6am. I looooooove it, feels like there’s so much more time in the day even though it makes me go to bed earlier. And we don’t have YMCAs in Ireland – I use my college gym, does that count? I usually use the strength training exercises that came with the free weights I bought to use at home but I’m looking for a really good book or something to help me get better routines!

Reply

I am good at speaking to kids, but when it comes to speaking to my peers and those who are older than me..forget about it! I get sooo nervous!

Reply

I loooove grilled pineapple :-P

Reply

I get sweaty and nervous public speaking too! It got worse as i got older. I sub teach kids and very easily feel comfortable doing that. And I loved being in the drama club in high school on stage. Go figure. My strength training includes push ups sit ups and leg lifts squats etc but I do have weights and weight bench my mini gym in my garage with treadmill etc when I can’t leave my kids. No membership required. I love it. I can even do a workout while they ride their bikes in my front yard.
Sleeping in til 8 this summer!

I workout at the Y…in Louisville. I really hope you werent at the norton commons location yesterday, if so I just missed you!

Reply

First of all, love your black and white striped maxi skirt in the pic above. So cute!

I’ve had a lot of lifting programs designed for me in the past few years, so I now know enough exercises to kind of compile whatever I’m feeling that particular day. I love looking on pinterest for core workouts though!

Ideal sleep in time for me is between 8:30 and 9 am. (Not too bad for a college student! haha)

What was the sandwich place you went to in louisville?

Reply

Hey! It was called Red Pepper and it was in La Grange! So so good!

So I NEVER comment (but have been reading for a long time), but I just can’t help myself in matters relating to apple fritters.

You NEED to go to Martha’s Vineyard–there is this bakery that is open during the day but at night it closes except for the backdoor shop called Backdoor Donuts–they make THE BEST APPLE FRITTER. Plus, they make something called “The Charlie” which essentially is heaven in the form of a hot donut+ a big heap of ice cream+ whipped cream + hot fudge. I’m not sure it is even legal but I’m okay with breaking the law if it isn’t.

That is all. But seriously, go.

I need the Charlie right this second!

I love apple fritters. I had no intention of getting one at the store last week, but it was singing to me. It sounded like Enya.

As for public speaking, I’m terrible at it. I can memorize a script, or a song, and perform like it’s no one’s business, so long as it’s fiction, or a song to sing, I’m fine. But actually speaking gives me the shakes, sweats, and blurry vision. This is why I always declined when my former Worship Leader at church (I’m on Worship Team) asked me to pray in front of the congregation.

Reply

I’m not a fan of strength training but I do it. I like finding workouts on Pinterest. I love waking up at 7 and sitting in my screened-in room and enjoying the birds before I get my work done. I’m looking forward to your Best Race Ever Tips. :)

I don’t have a strengh routine and need to find one ASAP

Reply

I do find that if I eat a lot of something…like donuts, or Skittles, I need to take a step back and eat something else. Like Hot Tamales. ;)

Good on you for taking the donut break. You’ve been pretty awesome with your eating, I’m impressed.

Reply

My ideal wake up time is 8am. Luckily my daughter likes her sleep, so now that it is summer I get to sleep until 8 a few times a week.

On my strength training days I use a combo of P90X, your 8 minute arms video, and a few Popsugar (from Pinterest) 10 minute workouts.

I am a decent public speaker when I am 100% confident in the topic. And if I’m not too emotional! But it has been awhile since I’ve had to do it.

Have a safe flight home and enjoy the rest of your family time.

Reply

I used to be a teacher too, but teaching is wayy different than public speaking…I can’t explain it, but I could easily get in front of a room full of students and talk for hours, but actual public speaking is a whole other story!

Wow – you have such an awesome family – lucky Brooke (and you!) to have all that love.
Ideal sleep in time – 9am (but can’t remember the last time that happened)
As a former teacher/musician I got over my fear of public speaking/ playing quite awhile ago. I think the key for me is to be prepared and then I don’t stress.
Strength training – not enough – though I’ve just returned to pump
I am so jealous of the delicious treats you have in the US as well as having Trader Joe’s – I reckon you should eat whatever you feel like on hols and don’t worry what anyone else thinks – we only live once!
Hope you keep having an awesome time in Kentuckyx

MAN! I wanted a donut so bad this morning before my 10 miler, but when my mom and I got to the bakery, THEY WERE CLOSED ON SUNDAYS!!! Boo hoo. My Hus actually drove through Louisville today on his way home from TN. Shoulda had him stop THERE! haha :)

Reply

YES! Two thumbs up for the YMCA!!! ( Can’t you just picture the Village People singing the song and doing the Y.M.C.A. actions?) Not only do I randomly work out at my local Y but I also WORK there…have for about 8 years now.

I do believe its the best “family facility” around not only due to the monthly membership price but also because of what it offers!!!

That grilled pineapple looks amazing! This weekend I had grilled peaches and they were a major grilling game changer. The fact that they were perfectly ripe Georgia peaches made it even better.

Reply

My little boy got baptized this weekend. It was awesome…. and I didn’t even have to talk ;)

Reply

Public speaking makes me so nervous! My general auidence is 5 year olds so anyone older than that age group makes me nervous :p
If I could I would grill everything in the summer! It’s one of my favorite things about this season.

Not only do I work out at the Y, I teach classes there and I am the Wellness Director there! I love it, and I LOVE what the Y does for the community!

I have never had an apple fritter but I seriously think I need to try one soon! I get ADD with strength workouts, so last fall I joined CrossFit and now I love being told what to do. Ideal sleeping in would be 8ish! These days I consider 7:30 to be late for sleeping in, but if I had the time, I’d love just a bit more!

apple fritter is my weakness! I was at the YMCA and saw someone using these, so I picked them up: Strength Stack 52. (www.StrengthStack52.com)

I think you’ll like them too! They are basically exercise cards that let’s you play games with your workout routine, totally fun, got a good sweat on!
