Marathon goal pace and some things you probably didn’t want to know but I will tell you just because.

On Saturday I was getting down on myself during our long run because of the 8 miles that we were doing at marathon goal race pace. I kept thinking… I can barely keep this pace for 8 miles… AND I THINK I WILL BE ABLE TO DO IT FOR 26 MILES IN JUST 6 WEEKS!?!? I thought for sure I must be crazy to believe that my marathon goal pace is even close to possible for an entire marathon and I started to rethink my goals.

Good news for me/you/anyone else that stresses out about not being able to think you can keep up goal race pace for a marathon:

Take some time to read THIS ARTICLE!!! If your goal pace seems easy/doable during training and you feel like you could hold that pace forever, time to make a more intense goal:)

There are things like the taper (fresh legs), your glycogen stores being full (because you have been tapering and carb loading) and the adrenaline/course support on race day that will help you to run at that goal pace for 26.2 miles! No more worrying, you’ve got this!

———————————————

Some things you probably didn’t want to know about but I am just going to tell you anyways:

1. Still in sweat pants/pajamas at 4:49 pm yesterday. Keeping it classy.

IMG 0689

2. Paige got a beautiful new road bike and I love her trainer set-up at her house. Mom of two very busy little ones and finding ways to get in exercise. I love it!

IMG 0690

3. The absolute best dry shampoo and dry CONDITIONER you will ever find in this world.

IMG 0692

4. When I tell Brooke that we are going to say prayer she folds her arms right away. It is adorable.

Yes, the santa pajamas are still being worn once a week. I can’t help it.

IMG 0695

5. I got out for a run this morning. 7 miles @ 8:20 pace. Quad not 100% but feeling good enough to run on it, I mean I did take THREE WHOLE DAYS OFF.

IMG 0706

6. An app to find the best doughnuts in your area. Now that is a million dollar idea.

Screen Shot 2014 04 30 at 7 40 58 AM

7. Baby flip-flops. One of the cutest things ever.

IMG 0702

8. If you are looking for the World’s Best PB Bars recipe you don’t have to keep looking because I found it for you. I finally smuggled (probably not the right word) my friend’s recipe. THESE are the best.

IMG 0669

8. I just found a restaurant where they come make the guacamole at your table. I have no words.

Those santa pjs are SO cute I’d wear them year round too :) I love the idea of this donut app. A new donut place opened down the street from my house, and I need to check it out ASAP.

It’s funny you should talk about goal pace. The week before I ran my personal best in the half, I ran a 5m race in the exact same pace. I felt so awful during that 5 miler and I was really down on myself…half marathons and fulls are not exactly the same but relevant story.

I think my next full marathon is around your goal pace. I’ve always struggled doing workouts during training which is probably why I don’t.

Reply

To fit in my workouts I have to be flexible..which can be hard. Sometimes the mornings are crazy and I need to do them at lunch time, sometimes morning and lunch are crazy and it is not until 4 or 5 (my LEAST favorite). My favorite is the morning…but we are also late nighters so 5 am is no good for me! My favorite time is 7 am :). That is getting WAY easier now that summer is coming!!!!
7:27 is my goal marathon pace. I am doing Richmond in the fall. Right now I am working on halfs and 6:52 is my goal pace!!!!
Today’s run was the the hardest and slowest I have had in a long time. It was cold and windy and raining…I just got it done! The weather was like this yesterday too and I didn’t mind too much but today I REALLY minded!
Brooke praying is very cute!

I did a slow run/walk this morning and took pictures along the way so I could show everyone how beautiful it is to run in Florida, well, except for gators and flying disc but hey, no place is perfect.

If you want to work-out, you have to organize/utilize opportunities to the best of your advantage. For example, my husband works crazy hours; I now get up early and go as he’s up and about, working. Don’t worry about feeling selfish about doing an activity that YOU enjoy. We all need time out – as part of our daily life. I also think that the mornings are much more conducive to exercise – what do other people think?

In a nutshell, for me, it’s about routine, planning and having fun with a training pattern!

Ps. I inspired by pyjamas …. and am so happy that you wore yoga pants all day – I do EVERY DAY :)

THANK YOU for that post!! My first marathon is in 25 days, and I’m completely freaking myself out at the moment. I feel like I should be running every second of every day to make up for times when I couldn’t train!!

I am pretty busy (if I do say so myself), and I always try to run as soon as I finish work. Running home helps get you home faster than public transport AND gets those miles in. Win win!

PS – There are occasions when I work from home. Like yesterday, when I was in my dressing gown til 5pm. It’s what the cool kids do.

I read a post-Boston Shalene article and she said she had trouble doing 2 consecutive miles at goal race pace (which was her actual race pace!) on the course when she tried in Sept, and obviously she did it 13x 2 miles 7 months later. Anyway, that article is absolutely right about having an aggressive goal that never feels within reach — but you also have to believe in yourself.

Reply

I love my road bike. I’ll bike to work just to get miles in. I need a trainer though for my house. And I won’t worry about your race goal. I ran a 10k at a good pace and felt awesome, a few days later struggled to keep that pace for 4 miles. Usually it’s because of my nutrition. So I re evaluate and start fresh the next day. Monday it was because I did and hour of spin right before. So many factors!

THANK YOU!

That’s exactly what I needed to hear. I just ran my first and only 21 miler for my first marathon in a few weeks. I walked away not feeling very confident about finishing my marathon. But what you wrote is exactly what I needed to hear!

I typically do my workouts before my little guy wakes up in the morning or during his nap time!

Most used app –> probably Instagram. :)

Find a gym with amazing childcare. That’s the only way I can get my workouts in. I tried getting up at the crack of dawn and I was useless after 2 pm. Do what works for you.

I look at my Joss and Main app a lot, but I don’t buy often. It’s just fun to look at when I have to wait for kids or appointments.

I’m going to run something today. I won’t know what my legs are willing to do until I get there.

Great post!! Thanks :)

My first marathon is June 21 (RnR Seattle!) and my goal pace is 5:45/km (Canadian here, too early for me to convert that to miles haha) but I am going to be happy with a finish no matter what my time is because this will be a HUGE accomplishment for me!

Thanks for the post! I am training for a marathon on May 18th and have attempted to do some longer (10-12 mile) marathon goal pace runs… they are SO hard. It’s so discouraging and makes me think I won’t hit my goal, but I know everything is completely different on race day! Good luck with your upcoming marathon – you’re going to kill it :)

had a nice rest day this morning, expecially since it was pouring AND my son turned 3 today so extra cuddles in the morning :)

OMG, this is so timely. I am wrapping up my 18 week marathon training plan in a few weeks and have been thinking exactly what you mentioned (“OMG, this pace for 26.2 miles??”). Thanks for the article :)

2 mornings a week (I would do more but my husband can only go in “late” these days) I get up at 4am and run so I am home by 6:00 to get the girls ready for school. Then Sunday morning I meet a group at 6;30 for the long run. One other day I run in the evening after my husband is home and 2 days I do the stationary bike while my girls are doing home work. It works out for us :)
My goal pace for my next marathon is about 8:05-8:10 avg but it’s not until November so I’m enjoying some easier runs for now!

When mine were small I would do it at their nap time on the treadmill or put them in a jogger and go outside. :)

Same here – up at 4 a.m. to run or go to the gym – sometimes my hubby joins me (especially at the gym) and sometimes I run with friends. If I don’t get my workout done early in the morning, it’s not happening. Evenings are too hard and I’m exhausted from my commute, two kids in every activity under the sun , dinner, laundry, puppies, etc., etc. etc. Definitely a morning worker outer over here ;)

Reply

I run when I can – typically 3x a week. I just don’t have the time to go out 5-6x a week. I also do circuits from home once Max goes to bed. But that is only sometimes as I also just want to relax at that time of night.

My most used app is twitter! I am not sure whether I will be running or not today – it is pouring buckets out there and I don’t have access to a treadmill :-(

Thank you for posting this! It’s EXACTLY what I needed to hear! I’m running my first full on June 1st (Windermere Marathon, Spokane WA) and it’s freaking me out a bit since my coach just told me what pace I need to aim for…and it’s 30 seconds faster than what I had been imagining I’d be doing. I’d of course be THRILLED if I can make it happen…but I can’t fathom having to run that far…that fast. Seeing this post today is a confidence booster since I know I’m not alone! And that really, is why I read your blog – you help to boost our confidence and your posts are a true enjoyment to read. Thanks again!

4:15 am is my friend – only way my running happens;-)
Agreed on MGP, I’ve never hit it and felt like it was “easy” for a sustained distance in training, nor do I ever try. Somehow, it happens in the race!

4:20 is my friend! If it doesn’t happen then, it doesn’t happen at all!

My girls wear santa PJ’s year round, I see nothing wrong with it ;) Finding time is my constant battle – if I can get out of work 10 min early, I can sneak in a 30 min run before I pick up the kids, I try to do that 2-3 days a week and 1 run on the weekends. Not enough time to train for a marathon :( One day! I’m trying have a better attitude and calmness about my “busy” and not be frustrated that I don’t have time for all the things I want to do. I just read this GREAT blog post about the “glorification of busy” http://carlabirnberg.com/2014/04/29/ending-the-glorification-of-busy/

That race pace article is so true! For my last half marathon I could barely manage 3 miles at my goal pace without feeling like I would die, but on race day I managed it (still felt very hard though :/).

Weekday workouts happen for me before 6.15 AM so that they get done.

Thank you for this information on keeping up at marathon pace!! It has been going through my head more than usual when I am running at my race pace and then I think that I cannot possibly keep it up for my scheduled half marathon etc. I have a race on Sunday and reading this was perfect timing! We have some restaurants that make the guacamole tableside here in NY – the best!

I have an 8 year old, a 6 year old and a 2 year old. Some days I wake and run 6 til 7am when the hubs is home with kids. Some days I run after dinner with the fam I leave them home with daddy. Some days after I put the kids to bed I run on the treadmill. And yes some days I have the garage set up with a movie and toys while I run. I don’t feel guilty about it one bit because they don’t watch tv much and is fun for them. I also take my 8 year old on shorter runs with me. All about being flexible. No excuses.

5am runs and workouts before baby boy and husband are awake. And now that the weather is getting nice I can get my runs in with son in the Bob (best running stroller).

I’m so glad you posted that article. I just started hitting the pavement these last 2 weeks since my foot injury in Jan and I’ve been really stressed about my pace not being where I was pre injury. Maybe I need to look at it more as a challenge though for my body to work back up to where it was.

Peeps training for a marathon—> What is your marathon goal pace!?! 3:30!!! my previous is 3:35…and 3:30 (8 min per mile) seems rather daunting to me.

its pouring rain today. ill do 5m tempo on the treadmill!

Oh we have a place that does that too! You can customize your guacamole and it is cheaper then the chain restaurants like Qdoba. My girls love guacamole but they do not like avocados and I do not get that at all. My 6 year old has tried to explain it to me but I still don’t get it.
Oh and you would be proud. We are doing Healthy Running Kids with my 2 girls and in order for my 3 year old to actually “go” when they say “go” during her 50 yard dash we have to greet her with M&Ms at the finish line. We are proud parents. We figured that out after the first race when the director said “go” and she stood there, then he patted her back and told her to run and she said “NO”. The M&Ms have unleashed her inner athlete. My 6 year old does a 1/4 mile and half the course is up hill and she has the cutest little running form.

I just wrote out a calendar for the month of May with a very loose schedule since three kids can change your workout plans. I try to run 4 days and cycle 1-2 days. I am going to sign up for my first full this fall in Richmond! Goal pace a – finish b- 4:30. c. 4:15.

Thanks for the marathon goal pep talk. That is probably my number one thought as I do speed work! How the heck am I going to do xx pace in six weeks!

I know a 5k is nothing compared to a marathon, but I have to say running the race somehow felt easier than any of my training runs, even with the hills. I was surprised at my time and thought my Garmin was wrong, but the race volunteers confirmed it. I was running faster than I thought I was, just because it felt easier. Maybe it is the same for a marathon!

I’m sure many people are way busier but I am a teacher, in grad school, and up until last month I worked a part time job too (now my part time job is growing a human). I just get up and work out before work, as early as I have to! I’ve been up at 3am to do 20 milers before the work day if I had plans on the weekend. Just accepting that sleep has to be sacrificed for ultra/tri/marathon training worked for me (now it’s much easier because I just work out enough to stay healthy and it takes SO MUCH less time!).

I run most mornings at 5:15 am. On the weekends it may be 6 am. But I done before my family gets up.

My most used app on my phone is probably itunes or my email, again – blech.
I am not currently training for a full, but two halves in August. Those will probably be just for fun as the hubs is running his first one ;) But after that, my goal is to break into the 1:40’s for a finishing time, which is an average of about 7:40. I know I can push myself harder during a race; I’m just not sure how to do that…
I will probably run after work to my bff’s house today, because we are going to get shoes! Yay! Also, my calves are crazy after our hills this weekend. Oy!

Making time to run is harder for me right now than it ever has been. I can get up at 3:30 to do it but after a few days I’m sure it would take a toll on me and I’d turn into the meanest mom in America! I try to get all 3 kids to nap at the same time and hop on the treadmill..they cooperate with my plan about twice a week ;) my last choice is to run around 8:30 when everyone is in bed and it’s either clean up dinner dishes or run..tough choice ;) oh, the joys of having 3 kids in 2 years :)

My run today was a 5 mile tempo run. With some hills mixed in because my half-marathon next week will be HILLY. I started running without music recently and I’ve been loving it; I feel like it sharpens my focus and I’ve actually been running faster. I did use my ipod for the last 2 miles of my long run last weekend for a little extra motivation and I loved that. I think I will use that strategy in the half. I like to run solo; so it was a solo road run today in the windy rain. Is that smart when I’m fighting a sore throat? Aww well.

That is good to know! I would have thought that it would need to feel easy but it makes perfect sense! Loved the article. So excited for you!

Being single with kids makes it more of a challenge. My kids are no longer able to ride in a jogger and not big enough to run with me. I have my bike on a trainer in my room and bike 2-3 times per week. I get one long bike ride outside every Thursday, thanks to all day kindergarten and a day off from work. Saturdays are my long run day and I use any available family member to watch my kids so I can run. I have even slept over at my parents house so my kids can sleep in. During the week I run during my lunch break at work. I do a quick 3 -4 miles and eat lunch at my desk. Finding time to swim is my training difficulty right now.

omg guacamole restaurant!!!

I’m aiming for just a solid 10 min pace this marathon, I tried to go 9:40 for my first one and ended up at like 12:30 because I went out to fast and it got soo hot. I don’t care when I finish I just want to feel like it was a solid consistent effort

I was a single mom for a long time (my daughter is 8 and we just moved in with my bf) so I had to find ways to fit in my workout. I’ve been fortunate enough to be able run during my lunch break. On the weekends (or if I didn’t have time at work) I would let my daughter ride her bike next to me while I ran, or we’d go to the track.

I usually work out after I put my boys to bed. I’m one of those weird people who like to work out at night. It helps me unwind from the day. Unless I have a long run, then I get up early on Saturday while my husband watches the boys. My run tonight will be on my sister’s treadmill. It’s been rainy and cold here all week and I’m a weeny about running in those conditions. Btw, my boys still wear their Santa pj’s too.

Mon-Fri I get up at 4:45 am & either run or strength train before work. It’s hard to get up that early but it’s hard for me to get up regardless of the time! It’s great to get it done early & I feel so much better the rest of the day.

This theory is SO true – two years ago I ran the Boston Marathon at 7:41 pace. I NEVER ran a 10 miler at that pace never mind 26 miles. I did one day of speed work per week but nothing super long and no tempo runs. (although I’m one of those crazy elliptical/stairmaster people so I would simulate tempo running on the machines). So either someone else inhabited my body on race day (not likely) or the taper/glycogen/adrenaline thing really works. I’d vote on the second scenario :) You TOTALLY got your upcoming marathon. I’ve been following your workouts and they are intense. You’ll be so set on race day.

that should say 7:47 pace :) the runner/number freak in me and my inability to lie :)

I have to schedule my workouts or I will not do them. I do have to have a little flexibility because I never know what time I will get off work, but I have weekly mileage goals I stick to. My workouts are pretty much always after work, and I have to start right when I get home or I will sit on the couch and never get up again!

My most used app on my phone is probably my email, or pinterest…

I didn’t get to run today, I had to wash ALL the dishes – I was out of plates. Boo.

This first part has me feeling so good! :) Yes! Good to know because darn, marathon pace DID feel pretty easy to me this time around and didn’t meet my goal but I plan to try again and thinking I should set my sights higher.

my most used app is facebook. I have a half in September, that is my next scheduled race

My 18 month old is wearing the same Christmas pajamas tonight! :) Love them.

I am a busy person and fit in my workouts after work and longer runs on the weekends. I wish I had more time for workouts though, like back when I was in college and just had to go to classes.

My run was a very rainy 1 mile. We planned on running longer but it started thundering and lightning. And you just can’t mess with that.

My most used app is the weather app or facebook, I will admit.

I’m doing my first FULL marathon this October, so I’ll start training June 15th. My pace goal is 10:00. I mean, I’m normally a little faster, but I think keeping it at 10:00 will be a challenge for the whole 26.2. But i’m having high hopes in myself! ;)
No run OR workout today! I have a 1/2 on Saturday, and have been having some foot problems – I think plantar fasciitis??? – so taking it easy this week!
I have to schedule my workouts/run into my everyday schedule so that I stick to it. However, now that it has become such routine, it gets easier I think, too keep at it and make time.

My husband is incredible and watches the kids each morning for an hour or more while he gets ready for work and I workout. I’m kind of a very grumpy wife/mom if I don’t get some me time in the morning.
And that article is so AWESOME!! I have my first half marathon post baby #3 in a few weeks and I really want to PR. It might not happen b/c my baby is only 7 months old and I’m not sure I have all my speed back yet but this article gave me hope. You rock, thanks!!

I didn’t run today. I’m still resting my Piriformis. So I went to Pilates and got my butt kicked on the reformer. My legs are still shaking. It sure helps my hips though!

Most used app?
I use ZipList for my grocery shopping. This way I never forget my list – unless I forget my phone and that is rare!
Good luck with the training!

My kids are still rocking their Santa jammies too. I kinda wish I had some.
I love what you shared about your marathon pace. I never thought about it that way and it has given me hope that I can kill it at my races this summer. So thank you!
About getting my workouts in, I do 90% of my training when the rest of my family is sleeping which means getting up between 3:30 and 4:30 am depending on the plan for the day. It sounds insane but it works really well for me.

Thank you for assuaging my worries! I’ve been running 8:45-9:00 miles pretty comfortably for the last two weeks or so, and then my run group set an 8:55 pace during our five mile group run and I was DYING. I made it, but it was rough. A good reminder that my previous faster runs were done on fresh legs!

My first half marathon was at a 9:00 pace, which was FAST for me at the time. It totally was the adrenaline, carb loading, and competitive spirit of race day. :) I was out for the count for days afterwards, but it was so worth it! Can’t wait for my second!

What cute baby shoes! I’m a little nervous to put my daughter in them because she’s so clumsy, like me!

JANAE- (shameless plug) but I’m selling Be Mom Strong shirts for my good friend’s 4 yr old son that was just diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. You can see the details on my site below, but if you could help spread the word to all your fab mama followers I would be forever grateful!

Those baby flip flops really are the cutest!

I’m not very busy these days, but I have a feeling in a couple of months when we have a new baby and I start a new job, I’ll have to figure out how to fit in workouts a little better.

If I am busy, usually the best way to fit in my workouts is getting up early to do them. This requires going to bed early, but to me it’s totally worth it. I am a morning person though so I have way more energy in the morning than I do at night.

Love those flip flops, especially the color!

I just had tableside guacamole too during a work lunch – mmm so good.

Hilarious about Brooke folding her arms, Gabriella puts her hands over her eyes when we pray. It’s so cute! Love their little interpretations of how we fold our hands to pray :D

Come to my house and I’ll make you OG guac at the table.

table side quac is the best! A couple of restaurants in Austin offer this service….for an extra fee!

Thank you! Just what I needed to hear today. I’m having some self-doubt issues concerning my upcoming races (Provo 1/2 Sat and UV Marathon in June), and my brain needed a pep talk. :)

What restaurant is the guacamole at?!

I definitely get the “FEAR” of the marathon goal pace the closer the race gets. Just stick to your plan on race day and you will be awesome!

I love the fooducate app, you scan whatever you want to eat and it gives you grade for how healthy it is.
