I am now a Thai food chef.

New thing I am doing—>  taking a cooking class anytime I travel to a new place.  This was legit and now I can make 5 Thai dishes.  Come on over and I will make them for you.   We did this one of the first nights I was there.  It was a 4 hour class and we learned a ton about Thai cuisine.

IMG 0489

Our instructor.  He was hilarious.

IMG 0490

We learned about each of the ingredients that went into the different meals and we each cut up the items for our own dishes.

IMG 0488

Then it was outside to cook everything. I do not know why I decided to wink at the camera.

IMG 0495

Tom-Yum-Goong for our first course.  This was actually probably my favorite part of the meal.  I love soup.

IMG 0497

Pad Thai for the second course and after that we made a chicken salad (that I forgot to take a picture of).

Look how fancy we were:

IMG 0501

And the green curry doesn’t look very pretty but it turned out pretty good.

IMG 0503

And the real star of the show… mango sticky rice.  We even made the coconut milk that we put on the rice from the meat of the coconut.

IMG 0504

Brooke better like Thai food because we also got a cookbook at the class and I am about to be cooking this stuff up all of the time.

IMG 0506

And after the class we took the train back.  Just a few people on the trains.

IMG 9789

PS I made it back to Utah safe and sound and for some weird reason I really enjoyed the 20 hour flight home.  I see nothing wrong with enjoying sitting for 20 hours so that I can just read, watch movies and eat airplane food (which is surprisingly good).

——————————————————–

Ever taken a cooking class?  What types of things did you make?

If you could learn to make any type of food really well… what would it be?

Thai food lovers—>  what is your favorite dish?

Sundays…  how long do you stay in your pajamas for?

-Today it will probably be around 5 pm when I get out of mine and into a different pair of pjs for the day.

Glad you made it home safe. I actually don’t hate long plane rides either.

Fave Thai dish would have to be coconut curry chicken soup and pad thai but i honestly love all of it. When I went to Thailand I took a cooking class too and I remember it being such fun. I hope your reunion with Brooke is/was amazing!!

glad you made it home safely…now tell us how excited Brooke was to see you

I’ve never taken a cooking class. I probably should because my cooking skills are really lacking.

If I could learn to make one thing I think I’d choose mango sticky rice because after seeing it on your blog I can’t stop thinking about it.

Pajama days are great!

I have loved following your adventures in Thailand. My daughter did a study abroad program there at Chulalongkorn University and she loved it. She took a Thai cooking class and has cooked pad thai, mango sticky rice and green curry for us when she is home visiting. I was fortunate to be able to go over and visit with her for 2 weeks and had a wonderful time. It is an experience I will never forget.

I am so happy that you were able to experience this even though I’m sure you missed Brooke terribly.

I’m so glad you had such a great time! Rest up and snuggle with Brooke today :-).

Oh Janae!!! After reading your blog this last week- I want to go to Thailand so bad! How incredible!!!!! I’m so happy you had the chance for such an amazing experience.

Reply

Glad you are home safe!! I regret not taking a cooking class in Europe when I was there! But, if I were to be able to master one food it would be sushi. :)

Reply

The cooking class sounds like lots of fun! I’ve never taken a cooking class before, but it sounds like lots of fun!

When I was a kid we used to have birthday parties at a place called Kitchen Time where the theme of the party is cooking a three course meal (including the dessert) and then eating it. That is the extent of my cooking class experience – although I often think of taking baking classes now.

Reply

Welcome back!! Glad you had such an amazing trip (minus the stomach thing). Okay, now put-lease we are overdue for a massive Brookers photo dump!

Reply

That food looks delicious!! I’ve never taking a cooking class but it’s always on my to-do-list!

I’m so jealous you enjoyed a 20 hour flight! I get SO antsy after 2 hours on a plane….

I wish I could stay in my PJ’s all day but I’ll probably change (into yoga pants) to run my errands. :)

Reply

What a great idea to take a cooking class on vacation…..P.S. I am still in my pajamas.

Great trip Janae. It looks like you had a blast! Thailand is on the top of my list as a place to visit. I love Thai food. Thai fried rice and drunken noodles are my favorite. My wife and I went on a cruise and hit Cozumel and took a cooking class. It was one of our most favorite times. We learned to make different salsas, margaritas, and then they incorporated salsa dancing lessons. We hit church on Sundays so we do not stay in PJs very long. Have a blessed day!

I bet that train smelled delightful HA!

I really want to make rice with coconut milk now. That has to be delish!

Reply

I would love to be an Indian food chef! Yummmmm in my kitchen!

Welcome back doll!

I’ve never taken a cooking class but I definitely could use one or 10:(

My favorite Thai dish is coconut curry pad Thai:) I use to get it all of the time at this fab little restaurant in london.

If we have nothing planned (which is very rare) I will stay in my pjs all day!

Reply

That is actually a BRILLIANT idea to take a cooking class every time you go somewhere, I seriously might start trying to do that!

Glad you made it back safely! I selfishly don’t want you to come back only so I can live in Thailand vicariously through you haha (just kidding :))
Yey for seeing Brooke!

Glad you made it home safe & sound!

Your vacation was as fun to see as I hoped it would be! I’m glad you had such a fun time.
My pajama plan is the same as yours. Conference= pajamas all day then if my family is lucky I’ll change into some different ones for dinner.

Reply

I’m not as much interested in cooking as I am in eating. I may sound a bit spoiled, but I enjoy letter others cook, while I focus on the eating. :)

I stay in bed on Sundays until about 10-11. I usually do my long run on Sundays in the afternoon. I like to let the air warm up a bit…although, here in Ohio that doesn’t always work out…It does give me an excuse to stay in bed longer though!

Glad you had a nice time in Thailand!

I think I need to go to Thailand just for the amazing food. It looks delicious! Glad you got back safely! I know it was a great trip for you and I’m sure you are more than ready to see your sweet Brooke! :)

Reply

I love airplane rides! They’re the best. Especially when you get food. I haven’t done a long one for a while, though. Not since Russia in 2005 actually. It’s been way too long!

Reply

I absolutely LOVE Pad Thai! It is so simple but always my go to dish when we order take out! Sundays are generally our only lazy day of the week! We all hang out in our pjs until 10 or later! It’s so nice to be able to just sip coffee and catch up on reading!

Reply

I oddly enjoy long plane flights too. Add it to the list of our soul-mateness.

I have done make your own pasta cooking class. We made the sauces too. Delish.

Reply

Hahah, gotta love your hat in that photo!

I would want to learn how to make spicy (Chinese) Szechuan Eggplant… so good and crispy and fried and spicy!

If you see this, I wondered: do you take vitamins? I spend a lot of money on vitamins.. like Super High-Potency B, Hair Skin and Nails, and Fiber supplement, and I wonder if it is just wasting money.

Reply

I have never taken a cooking class, I’m so jealous of your new Thai food skills!

I would love to know how to make Thai food, or really good Mexican food!

Pad thai is my go-to for Thai food, but I also love curry.

I would be in my pajamas all day long if I could, but I have to get presentable enough to take my dog out (we don’t have a fenced yard).

Reply

I have always wanted to take a cooking class! Just regular American food would be nice since I can barely cook haha… but I would want to learn how to cook Italian food! Pasta.. pizza.. carbs. yum. On Sunday’s I don’t even get out of my pj’s. And I don’t change them either hehe:)

Reply

Glad you had a good time and now back with Brooke. The food that you cooked looked amazing. Would you share the cookbook title? I would love to make sticky mango rice!

Reply

Love your perspective about the plane ride! And you’re not winking at the camera, it’s your cute smiley eyes! When you smile, your entire face smiles with you–I love it!

Reply

You’re already back?! Did it feel like to you your trip flew by?

Reply

Glad to hear that you made it home safe and sound, lady! I have a hard enough time managing a 6 hour flight, so I have no idea how you deal with a 20 hour one. I’ve been wanting to travel to Australia for a few years now, but I can’t deny that the long flight has been kind of a deterrent…

Also, I’ve never taken a cooking class before, but I definitely want to sometime soon. Is it horrible that I really want to take a baking class though? I like dessert better than dinner ;)

Reply

I have very rarely traveled withOUT little kids. 20+ hours in transit with little kids is grueling. Doing it solo or with another adult is fun to me…even with delays and lost luggage. I’m so glad you had a great time :) And how awesome to learn how to cook Thai food! I love Thai food. I’ll bet you’re snuggling your girl right about now :)

Reply

So much fun! I would love to taking a cook class on Mexican food! I love long plane rides as well!

Reply

I def wear my pajamas as long as humanly possible on Sundays. So, usually all day until I need to go somewhere.

Reply

I love Thai Food. I have so many favorites. If I had to pick one it would be Tom Yum Soup. I’ve never done a cooking class before, but I’ve been looking at the ones offered at Sur La Table lately to decide which one to take.

Reply

Thai food is my favorite cuisine. I’m not sure what my favorite dish is, but I had a spicy drunken chicken entree the other day at a Thai restaurant and loved it. So jealous of your trip!

Reply

I would love to be able to make Indian food, though it would probably still not count because I cannot handle the level of spiciness of standard Indian food.

On Sundays, we stay in pajamas until we have to go outside, or realize we’ve been awake for 4 hours and still haven’t.

Reply

I have never taken a cooking class but probably should. I cook a lot but am not that great at it… So any type of cuisine could probably help me out.

Reply

Yay!!! So happy you did this! This was my number 1 experience in Thailand and I still reminisce about the mango sticky rice I made :).

Reply

Yay! U made it home safely.
The food you made look so delicious and pretty.
Enjoy conference weekend. Cinnamon rolls at our house today. How about you?

Reply

I have been known to stay in them all day, but now that I do groceries on Sundays, I usually get dressed when I put my youngest down for his nap at noon. I’m glad you had a great trip. I’m totally jealous of the weather, bright colours and pretty much everything down there!

Reply

Hey…Just found your blog a few weeks ago and I really enjoy reading your entries! Thank you for sharing your daily adventures and I especially loved your journey in Thailand. Makes me want to get out there! Glad your home safe and sound and reunited with Brooke…she’s a cutey!

I took a pizza making class (dough and sauces) and it was amazing, but I have no skills and have tried and failed to replicate it at home.
If I’m alone or with adults I like long plane rides, but not medium (like 6 hours). For some reason if I plan a whole day of traveling it’s fine, but if it’s medium long it just ruins my day. With kids, the shorter the better.

Reply

I took a cooking class a few years ago and we made a chicken dish and pizza! It was really fun. I stay in my pajamas all day on Sundays. Sometimes I put on real clothes (aka leggings and a sweatshirt) to go grocery shopping but then I’m back into my PJs as soon as I get back:)

Reply

Yum! I have been in pjs for about 36 hours straight thanks to a lovely stomach bug. I am oddly looking forward to the first chance I can wear regular clothes and leave the house!

Reply

I took a cooking class with some girlfriends several years ago. It was fun! I would love to take a cooking class in Italy!

I hope Brooke likes Thai food!

The cooking class looks like a lot of fun. I’d love to learn to make Indian food. So tasty!!

I’ve been to Thailand twice, each time for 2 weeks and took cooking lessons each time.love the food! And the people. And the country.

I took my husband to a dim sum cooking class for his 30th bday–it was fun & delicious! We made various dim sim (Asian dumplings) and dipping sauces…so good! I would love to take a Thai cooking class. One of my favorite Thai dishes is the tom yum goong that you made. It’s middle name isn’t yum for nothing;)

Reply

I have always wanted to take a cooking class! This is so very cool. My favorite thai dish is pad thai & pad gra pow. The latter is a very spicy dish that I haven’t had in so long. Now I am craving it!

ps. re Sundays, pajamas ALL DAY erry day (I wish)… Ha.

Reply

I LOVE mango! Please share the recipe!!…or your own take on the mango sticky rice!

Reply

I took a cooking class where we made different desserts (including truffles) and sampled champagne (it was my kind of class!).

We make it a goal to stay in our PJ’s until at least 2 on Sundays….or wait…that might be everyday for me (I work from home).

I really want to go to Thailand now!!

Reply

We took a cooking class in Italy: fresh mozzarella cheese and pizza. So good and so fun!

Reply

I love the idea of taking cooking classes when you travel to new places. I will definitely be doing this the next time I travel!

Reply

I’ve never taken a cooking class, and now I’m wondering WHY?? Looks so fun! And…I’ve never actually had Thai food, I should for sure remedy that. That mango sticky rice looks divine!

As I type I am still in my pajamas…its 4:30pm! Love conference weekends! :)

Reply

Yay for a great trip! I’m so jealous of your pad thai making- teach me please!

Reply

Oh my Gosh, the dishes look so amazingly yummy, yummo. Thai food is one of my faves, Pad Thai is my faviourate but i am still trying to master the recipe.

Reply

Would love to have my food blog chronicle the one dish I hope to perfect….great idea! I think right now I’d struggle to pick between the perfect quiche, the perfect sirloin steak, and lobster! Guess I’ll have to start learning all 3!

I love mango sticky rice, but one Thai dish I cannot live without are drunken noodles!

I try to get out of my pjs as quickly as possible on Sundays or else they would never come off!

Reply

Janae what a brilliant idea to take a cooking class during your travels! I love this, I’m going to plan to take cooking classes on my adventures. I love thai good, pad thai and green curry are favorites. I’m with you on enjoying airplane time, especially when there are individual TV sets.
So glad you made it back, and so happy you had a blast outside of getting sick!

Reply

I think it’s completely acceptable to stay in your pjs ALL DAY on Sunday, with the exception of church and planned places to go! Let’s just say I definitely stayed in pjs today. :)

I have taken a bunch of cooking classes, including cooking classes taught my Iron Chef Morimoto, Anthony Bourdain and Jamie and Bobbie Deen. I would love to take a real Thai cooking class, love Thai food. One of my favorite dishes is Chicken Mango Curry with Jasmine rice, yummy.

Glad you got home safely! It looks like you had lots of fun aside from the food poisoning. Yuck. Rocky and Sarah really know how to be great hosts! I’m amazed at all the fun stuff you guys fit into your trip!
I’m envious you’ve learned to cook Thai food. I love Thai and my favorite dish is drunken noodles. I make it at home but I order it every time I go to a Thai restaurant.

Welcome back to America!!:):)

That looks awesome! Food art! :-)

I’m claustrophobic, so I get a little antsy on five-hour flights. I’m not sure how I’d manage a flight like yours.

I’m all about staying in my pajamas all day. Isn’t that what weekends are for? Especially after a long run.

Welcome back!

Taking a cooking class in a foreign country is genius! I want to know how to make authentic thai food!! Pad Thai is definitely my favorite Thai food. It’s all I ever order, really.

I had to put on real clothes to go to church on Sunday, but on normal days, I pretty much wear my pajamas non-stop unless I have to leave the house.

Reply

Cooking class in a foreign country? Now THAT is a brilliant idea. I can’t believe it didn’t occur to me when I went to England, which is the only time I left the U.S. Although, to be fair, England is not exactly known for its yummy cuisine.

Reply

That is such a great idea to take a cooking class while traveling! I went to honduras a few years ago and we learned how to make tortillas from scratch- it was SO cool! of course by now I have forgotten everything I learned… haha oh well

Reply

So glad to read you are home safe and sound :) What a fun thing to do ~ taking a cooking class while in a foreign country! Now you must have all of your family members over and cook for them :) Thai isnt my favorite but I did find this recipe for Pad Thai and I absolutely love it : http://browniesfordinner.com/2010/05/11/easy-pad-thai/ hope you enjoy :)

Pajama days? love them sometimes all day until shower time then in fresh brand new jamas :)

The food looks great!

And ya, that is my commute daily to/from work on the train!

Reply

It looks like you had such a fun (and delicious) trip! It would be so cool to learn how to cook another type of cuisine in that country. I hope to be able to do so one day. So far I’ve only tried Pad Thai before, and loved it, but that mango sticky rice looks delicious!

Pajamas are ok any time of the day- I’ve had Monday off from work and haven’t changed into real clothes yet at 12:30 pm! ;-)

Happy that you had a wonderful trip!

I love this – cooking classes are such a fun way to learn more about the culture and making your own food seems so much more rewarding!
