Two runs in one morning which means two breakfasts in one morning.

Two runs this morning. One with my running posse at early o’clock for 7.5 miles with two of those miles at tempo (6:35, 6:30) to test out the waters with speed again. This pace felt hard but at the same time it felt really good to get moving after doing only easy running since coming back from taking time off because of my shin splints. Even though I realized how much speed I have lost over the last little while those two miles got me excited to start working really hard for my marathon in June.

I got home and had oatmeal and then…

My second run was later on with a good friend that is in town visiting. 4.5 miles on the trails. The first .7 miles were STRAIGHT uphill, I thought my legs were going to fall off. Luckily, it was all pretty flat after that.

I am front loading my mileage this week because I probably won’t be running much at the end of the week because of traveling.

The best way to refuel. Why don’t all egg sandwiches come on a perfect/buttery croissant?

People that like to split entrees so that you get to try more than one thing are the best kind of people.

No big deal… each slice of bread is only like 3 inches tall.

Utah, you better not be playing a cruel joke on me… no snowing again until next winter (every year Utah gets warm and beautiful and then it gets cold again and snows. Rude).

All packed for Thailand. Running shoes, swimsuits and my leopard pillow so that I can sleep on the plane…. All I need.

82 degrees by 8 a.m in Bangkok. I feel good about that.

The Curly just got here so we are doing what we do best before going to pick up the other kiddos from school.

PS I love it when Brooke naps like this with her little buns up in the air.

Ever had shin splints? What did you do to get rid of them?

-I took 12 days off from running, iced, foam rolled, deep tissue massages, scraping and running on the trails more has helped them SOOOOO much.

What would your perfect breakfast be?

Do you ever run twice in one day? How often? Do you like doubles?

Parents reading—> When do your kids nap? How long usually?

-Brooke is down to one nap but they are usually 2.5 hours long! All of this bike riding is making her tired.

I have run twice in one day- not my favorite since I feel like the hardest part is getting out the door- hate to have to do it twice!

Perfect breakfast is oatmeal with PB and banana. Or banana and chocolate chip pancakes. :)

I don’t think I have ever run twice in one day! I kind of want to try it now!

Which was better…eggs on croissant or French toast? :-)

Brooke needs to teach Annabele how to nap. She is inconsistent and doesn’t like to nap in her crib. :-/

Perfect breakfast: something that involves Nutella. Lately my favorite is greek yogurt and a tortilla with nutella on it. MmMmMm. 2 a day running or running at night then the next morning isn’t my favorite. I usually take a whole 23 hours to recover or else my legs are really tired for #2. My little munchkin just turned 1 and still naps twice a day, but I’m thinking my days are numbered seeing as it’s after 4 and he is happy as a clam. But one long nap might be a really good adjustment for us!

I had shin splints twice and only time off helped.

I wish I could do 2 a days but in Florida it’s ridiculously hot by 9am so that aint happening anytime so, oh and I’m injured, so that’s that.

Reply

My perfect breakfast would be a huge waffle, with a side of pancakes, and another side of scrambled eggs :)

UGH shin splints… I wear Pro Compression socks or sleeves on almost every run over 5 miles because I swear they are the only thing that will keep my legs together. I use KT Tape if they are really annoying, but as long as I make sure to keep tabs on my shoe mileage and replace them, I can usually keep my shins happy. But they will tell me the first mile over the shoe limit! I have tried to stretch and strengthen my weeny calves to try to help my sensitive shins, it’s helped a little bit.

You’re going to have the BEST time in Thailand. I loved it there!! Don’t get scammed into buying jewelry though, its a big scam there that my boyfriend unfortunately fell for.

That breakfast looks incredible! I never let myself have croissants very often but they’re probably the worlds most perfect food. My go-to breakfast every day is a whole grain bagel-thin with peanut butter and banana sliced on it. I will never get sick of it. :)

Reply

I love two a day workouts! You have such pretty places to run. I wish I had nice trails to run. I’m pretty sick of running through the same neighborhood roads all the time.

Reply

Ugggh me too! I want trails. Well I’d have to drive there and we have mountain lions I get scared.

Reply

First, I love that you have a running posse. Everyone needs a running posse in my book.

I don’t usually do doubles, but weeks that I want to get some extra miles in I enjoy a longer run in the morning and just a few miles in the evening.

Perfect breakfast must include bottomless coffee or bhakti chai and bacon. And sugary carbs in the form of GF pancakes or waffles. mmmmm

I had shin splints in high school when I was running and playing soccer. I think it was the surface changes that did it. I ended up fracturing my left shin and had to take 12 weeks off. Whatever you do, don’t let them get that bad!

The only time I have ran 2x a day was when I was training for the Red Rock Relay. I never fare well with 2 a days…or evening runs. I hate having all the food in my tummy. I did one of my evening runs after having had 2 BYU mint brownies. Lets just say I don’t make wise choices and they don’t taste as good coming up as they did going down.

My mom makes a version of kneaders French toast that I think is better than their friend toast and it is my perfect breakfast. We always have it for breakfast when we are all together. She uses kneaders bread, makes a homemade caramel apple syrup, whipped cream and every fruit imaginable from Costco to top it off with. Plus we have bacon, sausage and scrambled eggs. Mmmmm.

My other favorite is the chilled oatmeal from Corner Bakery. I think the last time I had it was when I went with you though and that is WAY too long ago, which saddens me. I need to change that ASAP.

No naps for my kids. It has been 2 years since any of them have taken naps. Oh how this baby is going to rock my world. lol.

Nothing I loved more than when my son slept with his tush in the air! So adorable and sweet.

Oh shinsplints – they only appear when I haven’t been horseback riding enough! Running and riding are so complimentary to each other – I’m talking about the posting without stirrups kind of riding, though.

Reply

I’ve had shin splints several times! Absolutely no fun whatsoever. I just rested and stretched. They were all better within a week.

My perfect breakfast would be bacon and chocolate pancakes. Yummy.

I hardly ever run twice in one day. I used to be really into sprinting and if I didn’t get the time I wanted at first, I would come back an hour later and try again until I did it. ;) Now that I’m more into distance running, I try to get it in all at once.

Reply

Nothing wrong with two breakfasts. Have to love the trail runs!

Shin Splints – Never had them, have ITB pain though, that is rough as well.
Perfect Breakfast – Steak and Eggs, I’m a guy lol
Run Twice – I’ve done it a few times, often I do a trail run during my lunch break then a recovery run later that night.
Kids Nap – Our 1.5 year old takes one nap a day around 10 am. They are anywhere from 30 min to an hour depending on her activity that morning.

I had shin splints on and off for quite awhile when I first started getting into distance running. The thing that helped the most was stretching and strengthening my calves.

I’m not sure I’ve ever run twice in one day…..I have a feeling it would be bad for my very injury-prone body. :)

Reply

I LOVE pancakes or big fluffy waffles…but pancakes more!
You are going to have such a great trip.
I think I have only done 2 a days a few times….I usually feel an injury coming on when I try to do that. :/

Reply

My best napper took 2 hour naps. They stopped napping by 2 yrs. I have a friend whose kids nap for 3 hours until they were 5.

I have been thinking that I have shinsplints, cramps etc. in my calves and my Chiro said it might be compartment syndrome.

Was your pain mainly on the front of you legs? I do massage and scraping type stuff . It kills, but helps so much.

I’ve had to ditch my Pureflows in favor of some Glycerins. Maybe the angle and cushioning will help.

My husband was in Vietnam recently. He loved the heat, but not the humidity. Have a great trip!

Reply

Yes to shin splints- I rested, tried to strengthen some of the weaker muscles, and have worn compression sleeves since that time 2 years ago. When are you leaving for Thailand?

Reply

Perfect breakfast: Belgium waffles, biscuits and white gravy, bacon, coffee, and hash browns with ketchup. Carbed up!

Reply

I love runny eggs! It’s so simple, yet I could eat it every single day. On toast w/jelly and hot sauce. Plus a big cup of black coffee.

I’ve never had shin splints. I’ve had hip issues, broken foot, stress fractures, plantar fascitis…..us runners really do a number on ourselves.

I don’t run twice in one day…..My body can’t take that much. lol.

Reply

Kneaders french toast!!! Gahhhh that stuff is the BOMB. Yumm.

I am so excited for you to go to Thailand! I can’t wait to read all about your adventures! :)

Reply

I’m terrified of doubles, I don’t know if my body would respond well. I’ve never had shin splints but I’ve seen them a lot in my soccer friends over the years.

Reply

I do love two a day workouts but I have to be in the mood. Some days it is hard so I usually don’t plan them they just kind of happen.

That is SOOO exciting that you are going to Thailand! I am JEALOUS!

Reply

What trails do you run on? I just ran my first trail race and am now hooked!

Reply

I think I have shin splints right now! So frustrating. I’m just going to ice and foam roll and see how that goes.

My 2.5 yr old naps after we pick my first grader up from school. So usually around 2:30 or 3pm. He’s usually down for at least 2.5-3 hours! It’s my quiet/free time! I will hate life when he stops napping. Lol

My perfect breakfast is bacon, eggs, potatoes and a biscuit! Yum!

Reply

My perfect breakfast would be some Mickey waffles with a side of fresh fruit and eggs! :) I have never had shin splint (knocking on wood!). Great job on the double! I enjoy doubles but they can be killer!

Reply

I only had shin splints in HS. Got fitted for better running shoes and they went away and have never returned.
The biggest pain with doubles is having to take two showers in one day! Also I haven’t really been doing high enough mileage to justify doubles. But for my next marathon I’m going to up my mileage to 60-70mi/wk and then I will have one or two days total where I do an easy run in the morning and a speed workout in the evening.

Reply

I rarely run twice in one day, however I will cross train and throw in a bike ride or swim after my run. I’ve been fortunate enough to avoid shin splints all my life – but I can imagine they spoil the party. Favorite breakfast would have to be an omelet loaded with all kinds of goodies with a side of hash browns <– happens like twice a year.

Reply

The only time I’ve had shin splints is in high school when I was on the track team. My coach scraped and wrapped them and I thought he was trying to kill me! It was painful but worked!
I love 2 a days but I actually haven’t done them for a few years..maybe that’s why I like them!
My girl twin sleeps for about 2 hours while my boy twin naps maybe every other day. It’s a sad, sad, sad, sad, sad day when they start to give up naps. Sad. Sad. Sad. :)

Ummmm your second breakfast? YUM

Reply

I had never had shin splints before now. I equate them to taking a fews years off to let my body rest then getting back in to it too much, often, and fast too soon. when i ran in the past I was always teaching a BOSU class and doing lots of plyo and instability work which strengthened all the little muscles in my calves a lot! After about 5x of trying to just rest and stretch then get back in to it with no uck i decided to try adding back instability and plyo work, not running consecutive days for now, increasing my mileage and speed slowly, being mindful of my running surfaces and sneekers, stretching, compression socks. I know this seems like a lot but for me it is worth it to be able to run! im beyond excited to be back! (knock on wood)

Reply

Brooke napping like that is just adorable!

Reply

i don’t think i’ve ever ran twice in one day, but way to go! you knocked out a ton of miles today :)

i usually eat oatmeal and a hard boiled egg for breakfast, but my favorite item to order when going out for breakfast/brunch is a veggie omelet with avocado, toast, and fruit!

Reply

I have dealt with shin splints since high school hurdles. ugh, they did a number on me! I have to say that they just take time to recover for me. I also find running down hills makes them more likely to develop.. weird, i know. But, I try to avoid downhills for that reason, even though I love going fast down them ;)

Reply

I usually read your comments because I love what people have to say but I’m super late today so…I have to skip the conversations. Sad day.

I love to do two runs but can it really be counted as a run when I really just get up and throw a mile on the treadmill to “wake up”. That’s it. Just a mile. Sometimes two if I’m feeling wild and I have time but usually not.

Favorite breakfast…scrambled eggs.

My daughter is 26 (works full time in the Governor’s office~I love to tell people that~ and they frown on people napping), my son is 23 and is a Marine and they DEFINITELY frown on people napping and my last one is 17 and he’s on spring break. Boy probably will nap all week. Does that count?

I agree…when the babies sleep with their little hineys in the air…those are the best naps.

Reply

Oh my goodness, you are going to Thailand so soon!!!!!! Gahhh you are living my dream, I cannot WAIT to hear about every single adventure and delicious bite of food!
I am a weirdo and don’t really like eating breakfast out though I adore eating lunch and dinner out. I love seeing friends in the morning so will always agree to it, but I am far happier with my own eggs, or yogurt bowl!

Reply

Ever had shin splints? What did you do to get rid of them?
Due to issues with improper fueling… I got them ALL the time during cross country! The elliptical and ice baths were my best friend for awhile. Also, I wore my compression socks constantly.
What would your perfect breakfast be?
Ugh I just love everything about breakfast in general. Right now, I am craving the chocolate-mint oatmeal that I made at home… But ugh bagels with lox and waffles and toast and all that wonderful stuff.

Do you ever run twice in one day? How often? Do you like doubles?
When I am home, I do two-a-day workouts a lot. At school my time is limited so I don’t do them as much. I like them when I’m feeling blah but want to get good mileage in.

Reply

Definitely get suckered into the twice a day run thing. Not by choice though- just finding time to fit it in with the kiddos. :) I can’t believe your trip is so soon!!!!!!!!!!!

I had shin splints when I ran in high school and had shock therapy. Now it’s my arches that bother me but only since moving to a place with no hills. I never do doubles but I don’t run enough lately. My oldest (now 9) used to take 3 hour naps and it was awesome! My second napped 30 min at a time and the longest nap he ever took was 1.5 hrs but it was rare. My third just stopped napping a few months ago and used to nap 1.5 hrs (he’s almost 3).

Reply

I had shin splints in high school. I don’t remember really doing anything for them…I think they just went away. I occasionally run more than once in one day, but if I do its only a couple miles in the evening.

OMG sleeping in Child’s Pose = THE BEST!

I did get shin splints when I first started running long distance. I got better shoes. :)

Perfect breakfast…that changes every.single.day.

I have never tried a double running day. I’m sort of afraid to, but I’ve been tempted lately. I might very well give in.

I did all those things to get rid of my “shin splint”. Turns out I have a stress fracture of the tibia. WORST. NEWS. EVER. I was training for my first half marathon in 2 years and I’m super bummed out.

I am so so sorry Jennifer! You will be back and stronger than ever!

I’ve never ran twice in a day! I think if I did my body wouldn’t like me. That French toast looks sooooo yummy!!!

I have my first shin splints right now. Track just started and I’m not used to running on the hard surface!

My perfect breakfast would be french toast and fruit and some sort of savory side. Although my weekend breakfast is pretty yummy too – scrambled eggs, pb banana toast and a green smoothie!

Reply

I ran twice in one day a few weeks ago but that is very rare for me! The best breakfast for me would be some super thick French toast, with extra crispy bacon and some eggs. With a BIG cup of coffee.

Depending on the day, my son (14 months) takes either one or two naps. A 2 hour nap around noon and then sometimes a power nap when we get home at 5.

Reply

That french toast looks amazing. That and waffles are my favorite breakfast foods. When we go on vacation, it’s freshly made, so I end up in a breakfast coma daily.

Thankfully, I’ve never had shin splints, but I was battling shin splints when I did Insanity – all those plyometrics! I stuck with it for 30 days, but when my marathon training commenced and the pain wasn’t going away, it was bye-bye Insanity. Nothing messes with my running if I can help it.

Reply

I love doubles! I usually only do them if I’m running >10 miles on a weekday, and one of the runs will be 4 mi easy and the other will be the rest. I always used to get really bad shin splints, but when I started running in Newtons, that helped a lot. Deep tissue massage helped, too.

Reply

I don’t ever comment on your blog, but I am really excited your going to Thailand cause Sarah is my sis-in law! I really enjoy reading your blog though and can’t wait for your posts!

Shin splints in high school from running track. I ran the 4×400, 4×200, and 400 open. My relay and I were the best in the state so I never wanted to take time off. Ran with shin splints and stress fractures for two years. Caused a lot of damage, had to turn down offers to run for some Ivy League schools. It took years for my legs to heal fully. Now I do a lot to strengthen my feet and calves, and I work hard to maintain good running form. Haven’t had a problem in over 5 years. Hope yours heal quickly and stay healthy and strong!

I occasionally do two runs in a day when I’ve done my scheduled run in the morning and then have run with someone else at night. It’s hard to resist a run when you can run with a friend!

I’m an eggs Benedict girl :) I enjoy running twice a day…once hard and fast and one as a slow escape from thinking.

I hate two a days. The haven’t in over a year, but I did once on a Sunday in preparation for a relay- I felt like it took my entire day! Prepare to run, run, eat, recover from run, eat, prepare to run, run, eat…. sleep. I would rather just do that once!
Brooke is too cute napping like that!
My favorite breakfast is homemade blueberry pancakes!

Reply

I occasionally do two runs in a day when I’ve done my scheduled run in the morning and then get the chance to run with someone else at night. It’s hard to resist a run when someone asks you if you want to go for a run with them!

I love buffet breakfast where you can have little bit of everything yummy, pancakes, French toast, muesli, bacon, eggs, croissants, hash browns mmmm. I can not wait to hear/see all about Thailand, I went to Bangkok & Phuket back in 2006. I would love to go running twice in one day especially since it’s getting cooler here, I feel more motivation in autumn:) Brooke’s sleeping style is adorable too.

I’ve never run twice a day but I’m thinking about helping my eldest start cross-country training. He went in a race with me and came second in his age group with NO training! I keep wondering what he could do if he trained for cross country. And you’ve now given me the perfect motivation – a repeat meal if I train with him! I’m really looking forward to reading about your trip to Thailand. Have a blast Janae!

Reply

I’ve been dealing with shin splints on and off for a year and a half and treated with a combination of compression, ice, stretching and trading surfaces (treadmill for asphalt). Fingers crossed they stay happy and healthy!

Reply

I usually get shin splints at least once during training for a race, and the only thing I’ve found that helps is just taking a little time off, doing lots of compression sleeves, calf stretches, and icing. I wish there was a miracle fix, because they are the WORST! Luckily I haven’t had to deal with them for a while, and I’m hoping they don’t make a reappearance anytime soon.

I need to find a kneaders, I wonder if it’s just a Utah thing? I need to see if there’s one in Texas!

Reply

When I got shin splints I iced, rested, and compressed a lot. Eventually I self-diagnosed myself by referring to the internet (everything is true on the internet you know) and decided it was okay to start running again. I kept it easy paced and made sure that it didn’t start hurting worse. Eventually they went away!

Shin splints are the worst. I hope you have a great trip. I have done doubles, when I needed to get a long run in and there wasn’t enough time to get it all done at once.

I wish mine still napped..but he is old enough to let me nap ;)

Reply

You are UNREAL! I tried running twice in one day and my legs never forgave me. My perfect breakfast is anything with a ton of apples and peanut butter. It’s all I need in my life. Well, that and maybe chocolate. :)

Reply

First, let me say I totally got emotional when I seen your bag for Thailand! I’m soooo jealous… what an amazing opportunity:) I lived in London for a year and always regretted not doing more traveling while I was in Europe.

I battled shin splints throughout my college running career… basically I iced everyday after practice and ice bathed a few times a week (not as easy to do in the winters here in NY).

My perfect breakfast is stuffed french toast (no judgement)… it’s stuffed with extra love and calories I justify it because I run… and its also absolutely DELISH!

My Ella is 17 months and when she is home she will do 2 two hr naps (which is great for me bc that allows for me to go for a long run & then hit her second nap…Lol) however at daycare she will do cat naps throughout the day. And Brady who is 3.5 barely naps at home and naps for about 1.5 hours at daycare…

My brother lives in Bangkok! He is a chiropractor there and when we lived closer he did amazing things for my running after I broke my ankle. I miss him so much! It’s pretty steamy there so make sure to drink lots of water. You are going to have so much fun.
My youngest still naps about an hour and half…I don’t want it to end because that’s when I get my work out in. I don’t usually do two runs in one day but yes to two breakfasts in one day. Love eggs Benedict!

I agree — sharing meals is the best! My husband and I really don’t even order at most places without consulting each other on what we’re having first!! Eggs Benedict is my favorite but that french toast looks amazing!

That french toast makes me want to have second breakfast and I definitely won’t be running twice today. I’ve done two-a-days a couple times before, but I don’t make a habit of it because I feel like it completely exhausts me for the following day.

I’m actually planning on two runs today as the hubs is only up to 5 miles and I’m training for a race so I need a couple more.
My kiddos sleep on Sunday afternoons and that’s about it these days. Sad.

FYI: My son who is a little over 3 years old, STILL sleeps like that, we call it butts up 7-up.

Shin splints are the current death of me! I’ve been battling with them since November, took a month off my doctor’s orders, and they returned again along with my return to running. I wish I had a magical solution but I don’t :(

Have an amazing time in Thailand!!

Reply

I have had shin splints in the past and they were such a pain. I was doing all my running on pavement at the time, which I learned after incorporating trail running, was not helping. I went to regular physio, taped my shins while I ran and iced immediately afterward. Eventually they went away. :D

Wow two runs in one morning – you are awesome!

I only get shin splints when I add speed or really up distance…I run through them if they start on a run because they usually go away after a mile.

I love all breakfast foods…I love eating breakfast for dinner! Usually French toast and scrambled eggs are my favorite, but some of my favorite places to eat are breakfast places like The Pancake Pantry, Country Boy, and Loveless Café in Nashville and Aretha Frankenstein’s in Chattanooga. (Tennessee)

I have run twice during the day before, I am not a morning person though, I would rather run when it is daylight and sunny!

Reply

I have done 2 a days a couple of times when I had to split up my mileage because of other commitments.

Best breakfast always is eggs in an omelet or scrambled, wheat toast and hash browns. I am not so much for the sweet stuff for breakfast.

Shin splint are awful I have been dealing with them on and off for a couple of months and after being a long distance runner for several years, I have found out why – I changed my Ghost 6’s to Pure flows and Launch. Bad bad as I have been told by fellow runners and others in the running shoe industry I know. When you are trying to increase speed into your distance, you NEED a shoe with cushion esp. when your running high miles (I do 45 average a week with longest runs at 10-13 miles). Otherwise the splints will keep coming back and then you risk a host of other more severe injuries. Our bodies were not made to run long distances with high speeds like we do. So, I went back to my Ghost 6’s and my splints are SO much better. I have been told the Pure’s and Launch are for shorter, speedier runs and how right they are! So be careful in those Pure Flows and maybe try a more cushioned shoe for your long runs so those nasty shin splints don’t come back. It’s running season and you don’t want to be injured during this awesome time of year :)

Reply

I thought I had shin splints but, as it turned out, it was a stress reaction in my tibia… I’m now in a walker boot and no running for six weeks ( four more weeks to go…).

Reply

I just posted about how I cured my shin splints – http://livefitandrun.blogspot.com/2014/03/lets-talk-about-injuries-shin-splints.html Basically compression socks, foam rolling, and ice is what helped me. I still have problems from time to time.

The only time I’ve run twice in one day is during my Relays.

Breakfast is always hard for me. I always want the sweet/carbo-riffic: french toast, pancakes, cereal etc., but I know that eggs and vegetables are so much better for me. Most days I just have a Luna bar. Low-glycemic AND sugary tasting. Win.

Perfect breakfast would have to be… eggs, pumpkin bread, fresh fruit, scones, lots of coffee!!!
