And I was worried?!? Also, my first ever selfie in Japan.

That was fun.  I WISH that I could have left the airport in Tokyo to explore… Next time. PS I guess my name is now Janaen.

IMG 9654

At least I remembered to take a selfie while in Japan.  You can see Japan outside of that window.  You are welcome.

IMG 9675

And I was worried about the long flight?  What could be better than people bringing me diet coke and food all day while I just sat there, watched movies (and they played HOUSE ((one of my favorite shows ever)), wrote emails, slept and read.  A great way to recover from a 16 miler if you ask me.

IMG 9668

Heather also hooked me up with plenty of candy for the trip (and DC for when I get home to recover from jet lag).  She is a good soul.

IMG 9652

And like usual, I have some random things to share with you:

One of my favorite quotes ever:

IMG 9484

From 27 Little Struggles that Only Runners Know, my favorites:

Screen Shot 2014 03 27 at 9 56 23 AM

Saw my road bike in the garage.  I forgot that I still had it (I think it is 8 years old?) and it made me miss my long solo bike rides in the canyon.  When I get back, I am hittin’ the bike up again.

IMG 9653

I already miss this little thing so so much.

And a short little video of some things from the last week.

What a lovely inaugural japan selfie :)
I’m running a half marathon in Philadelphia on Sunday. Weather is calling for cold wind and rain so I’m guessing the highlight will be brunch afterward. Lol.

I haven’t rode a bike in years. I fell off one in camp and got a concussion and never really rebounded. Terrible I know :(

Good luck in Phili!

Four things:
1. I can’t believe you’re already chillin’ over there! You are the most productive blogger of my life.
2. The quote about laughing or crying in life makes my heart smile.
3. OMG I FEEL LIKE I JUST RAN WITH YOU.
4. “GO…GO…GO…” <3

Again, have a BLAST, missy!

Have a fabulous time in Bangkok!! I was there once when I was 9 (too young to appreciate it) because my aunt and uncle live there. I should’ve gone with you! I hope you have a bunch of Brookers photos/videos saved up to post this week otherwise I’ll go through withdrawal!

Reply

As a child we used to love the plane rides…nothing but sitting and watching movies. It felt like time was a completely irrelevant and meaningless.

Have fun over there Janae! I’m doing a small race tomorrow then relaxing the rest of the weekend. :-)

Reply

Good luck in you race.

Reply

I flew from Houston to Maui, it was a long trip.

I miss Brooke already too. ;)

Reply

Longest flight was Quebec, Canada to Australia… 24 hours sooooo long!!
I’m so excited to see and read about your adventures.

Reply

Ive always loved that quote! You can tell it’s said by someone with age, experience and lived some life.
I’ve flown coast to coast so nothing like even close to what you’re doing! I can’t wait to see your food adventures!

Reply

(quiet reader here) Oh man, I’m IN Japan, and was even hanging out in Tokyo for the day. If you could have gotten out of the airport, it would have been fun showing you around, plus the cherry blossoms are blooming so it would have been extra pretty. Have a great time in Bangkok…and longest flight for me was here… or London… I can’t remember.

Reply

I spent two weeks in Japan in March 2010! The cherry blossoms were gorgeous :)

Reply

Enjoy your trip!

Reply

Diet coke definitely helps me on plane rides!! Although the longest flight I’ve ever taken is only about 8 hours.

My boyfriend is a cyclist, so is my dad. It’s only a matter of time before I start…I like spinning though!

Reply

Have a blast! Good luck recovering from jet lag, and I hope to see lots of selflies in interesting places!!

Reply

Longest flight was from Boston to Riga, Latvia which was 15ish hours?

I don’t love biking but I wish I did! Maybe someday! :)

Reply

Wow, Japan is really empty. LOL My hubs rides a bike but I sort of really suck at it. I am going for a ride this weekend because I’m injured and can’t run. Wish me luck!

Reply

I was on I think it was an 18 hour flight to India…and then when we were there we had another 18 hour train ride!
We are taking the kids to an aquarium tonight, some running, some cleaning, and church :)

Portland, ME to Sydney was a stinkin long flight. My flight to Connecticut this weekend is only two hours –much better!

Have a great trip!

We have a children’s bday party tom afternoon so I am hoping to squeeze in a light am run and I think on sunday its going to be a RELAX day because I need one… like legit, stay in my pj’s all day long.

My longest flight was like 6 hours to FABULOUS London-town… I love that place and I would still be living there if it weren’t so expensive. But Thailand is on my travel bucketlist!

Nobody wants to see me on a bike! It’s all soooo bad!!! That and swimming! These are two reasons I could never do a triathlon:(

Reply

New York to San Diego is my longest flight on record which I guess is like nothing compared to flying to Japan! I did fly back from San Diego through Salt Lake City and totally took pictures of the mountains from the airport! So beautiful. Next time I need to leave the airport and see Utah!

Happy to read your post this morning. Did not know if the blog was taking a vacation too. Thanks for always sharing your life with us!! Keep enjoying every moment your in.

The longest flight I ever took was from Amsterdam to Minneapolis. While it’s not supposed to be more than 8 or 9 hours (i believe), we ended up sitting on the runway in Amsterdam for 3 hours first before leaving, so I ended up being on the flight for 12 hours. I definitely started pacing towards the end. Glad you didn’t mind the flight so much!

Reply

Ah the delays on the runway drive me crazy. I dont travel much now but back in the day I would get so antsy just sitting there. Your comment brought me back to more traumatic times lol.

Reply

My longest flight ever was I think 5 hours? I can’t imagine sitting in a plane for longer than that!

Have SO MUCH FUN today exploring around, eating good food and relaxing! Can’t wait to see pics :) I am planning a trip to Thailand for next year!

Reply

Have a fantastic time! Weekend plans include a 20 miler, dinner out for Dine Out Boston week, hanging with my friend’s kiddos, and pacing my friend in her first race post-baby :) Not bad, I don’t think.

Longest flight was to Europe- 8 hours?

Reply

Good luck pacing, paced my Fiance for the first time last night and it was amazing and hard at the same time.

Reply

My 4 1/2 year old is having Surgey this morning to remove her adenoids, and since she needs to take it easy and rest this weekend, I bought her “Frozen”. So we will be couch bound with Elsa and Anna this weekend ;) …. My longest flight was from SFO to Orlando, with a then 3 1/2 and a 14 month old, it was long and painful….I also have a beautiful road bike that has been collecting dust in my garage – going on 12 years! I wanted to do triathlons after I graduated nursing school, but life has always been too crazy to put in serious training. My husband always talks about selling it, but I vow to use it one day!! Have a fantastic time in Thailand! Looking forward to hearing about your adventures!

Reply

Hope your little one has a speedy recovery. The movie will help.

Reply

LOVE road biking! I wish I lived in Utah so that I could come with you!! In the summer I ride my 8-mile commute every day, and I’m really looking forward to starting that up again soon! We still have over a foot of snow on the ground and morning temps in the teens, so it will probably be another few weeks. :/ Our spring is coming very late this year!!!

Reply

I hope you have a wonderful trip! Enjoy!

My longest flight was from DC to Frankfurt in route to Rome. It was a red eye so I slept a lot of the way over.

Reply

Can’t wait to read about your adventure. I love long bike rides living out in the country I ride for hours taking in the view and its my best time to think. Now if only mother nature would stop making it feel like winter here in Ohio. Have fun exploring and eating!

Reply

Seriously so jealous you are traveling! I’m going to live vicariously through you for the next week.

Weekend plans include a fire and ice party: watching frozen and catching fire, taking my gma to the orchestra, soccer, and lots and lots of thesis writing.

Longest flight was to germany but I don’t remember how long it was.

LOVE to road bike. Wish it were warmer to go out and bike!!

Reply

Looks like travels are going well so far, thats great. That is a great way to recovery from 16 miles. Oh and that junk food was awesome lol. I would be missing the little ones as soon as I left my door too.

Weekend Plans – Little league, and hopefully running.
Longest Flight – I think about 4 hours, flight from AZ to DC
Road Biking – Does using my mountain bike on the road count?? LOL

Longest flight ever was from massachusetts to Cali—It was about 7 hours long! I don’t know how I would do on an even longer flight.

I can’t wait to read those little struggles-they look HILARIOUS. WHO SENDS THE BREAD BASKET AWAY???? lol

I have my last long run this weekend for Bosotn-I’m doing an organized r ace so that I have some nice scheduled water stops! :)

Have the BEST TRIP EVER I cannot wait to read all your updates! Be safe running and have FUN!!

Reply

I can’t wait to see your pics of Thailand!!! Have a great time! My longest flight…9 hours to Ireland. :-)

Reply

Longest flight was Miami to London. I tried to sleep the whole time but mostly just watched 6 hours of tv and read a whole book… Not the worst day :)

Reply

Have a great, safe trip!!
I love that video, so sweet. I love how close and loving your family is.
I do have a bike; actually its my sisters that she ‘loaned’ me when she was pregnant….9 years ago, haa! But its a hybrid, so I cannot go super fast on the road (like my triathalete friends when they ride!). I do love a good bike ride though.

Longest flight-Boston to Germany.

Reply

New York to Tokyo nonstop. It was hell on an airplane and the primary reason I will most likely never go back to Asia.

Reply

Struggles: I LOVE this article, new favorite <3 Still freezing in NYC soooo no tan lines to be seen… Anywhere!

And my longest flight was the summer before my Senior year in high school, non-stop flight to London. Sometimes I wish I lived in Europe just because for the very reason it does NOT take a million hours to go to another country.

Reply

I love flying on airplanes!! Super jealous you got to fly on 3! Just relaxing, writing a paper (which won’t be relaxing haha), trying to catch up on Anatomy, and skype date with the boyfriend :). Oh and eating!!! Never road biked, but it sounds absolutely fun!!

Reply

Good luck on your flights!! I’m so happy you technically got to go to Japan haha. The Narita airport is awesome! So much good food and gifts to check out.

Reply

Detroit to Seoul was a long one (14 plus hours) I watched tons of movies, that always helped. Plus Detroit to Narita (Tokyo) was a long one too.

Reply

So glad you’re having fun already! You’ve just been flying, so imagine how awesome Thailand will be!

The farthest I’ve flown is Boston –> Bremen, Germany. I think it was eight hours.

My weekend plans include a 10 mile training run tomorrow morning, followed by a spin class then going to the TRI-Mania Expo. Then Sunday, I have a 5k. Hopefully I’ll get in a burger and fries after all that running!

I love road biking. This August, I’m riding 192 miles over two days to benefit the Dana Farber Cancer Institute here in Boston. I’ll gladly go riding with you in the canyon!

Reply

Good luck in your 5K!

Reply

Thanks!

Okay…. love Brooke’s model pose on the playground! Gorgeous! :)

Curly saying “this is really hard!” <– precious

"Go!" <— Brooke's singing… adorable.

Have a great time on your trip… bound to be so beautiful!

Reply

I love that video so much! I’m glad we’re not the only weird family that walks around singing the Frozen soundtrack (all the time!)
Weekend plans are a longish run in the morning and date night!
The longest flight I’ve ever taken is maybe 5 hours.
I enjoy biking, more so with friends though :)

Reply

AH so exciting!!!!! I can’t wait to hear about the trip!

Reply

I’m so excited to hear about all of your adventures in Thailand! And I love that quote!! Awesome video of your cute family. I especially love when Brooke patted for you to sit by her – so cute! And gotta love the Frozen singing! :)

Reply

Weekend plans include some yoga, Women’s Conference, and eating healthier (the week-long sugar-high birthday celebration needs to end!).

Longest flight was from NY to Frankfurt. I don’t sleep well–actually not at all–on planes.

I haven’t done much road biking. And, when I have, it usually involves me pulling a trailer full of kids behind me. So does that count as road biking or strength training?

Oh my gosh! You are almost to Thailand! I’m sooooo jealous! And also sooooo excited for you! Don’t you wish you could skip sleeping while you’re there so every second can be taken advantage of!? Have a marvelous time!

Reply

My weekend plans include watching a movie tonight, absolutely nothing tomorrow, and church on Sunday. Pretty low key.

The longest flight I’ve ever taken was almost 10 hours from Germany back to D.C. I’m going to have to try the long run before long flight thing, I think that might just make sitting for 10 hours more bearable. ;)

I LOVE biking! My sister and I have been into it lately, it definitely works some different muscles than running, but is more low impact, which I love. Really good cross-training.

Reply

Yes, yes, and yes! Weekend plans: grill out, spring clean the house, get in a long run, lots of snuggles. Longest flight for me was Atlanta -> Cape Town. 16 hours straight. And because I am crazy I am doing it again in 3 weeks, this time with a 14 month old. I LOVE my road bike. I miss it very much because I haven’t been on it since I found out I was pregnant back in May of 2012. I will be dusting it off soon though.

Reply

Ah! Fun! Have such a great time. Also your family has so much fun together. It’s so cute!

Reply

Have a fab trip!

Reply

You know how to fly in style! I’ve been on a few killer flights, but almost always with a buddy. This summer I’m heading to Scotland by myself (hiking adventure!) and so I’ll have to bring books and candy to make up for a lack of conversation. I LOVE when planes have awesome movies/TV!

What are you doing in Japan? I must’ve missed the memo!

Reply

Longest flight for me was a year ago from LA to Kuala Lumper, Malaysia. It was 23 hours! I threw up twice and barely ate anything the whole way. I love flying but for some reason those really long flights on the 500 people planes made me sick. Now I’m kind’ve scared though after that Malaysian flight disappeared. I flew that same flight a year ago.

Reply

23 hours, WOW! Flew that flight a year ago?? Yeah I would be nervous about that too. Fingers crossed for safe travels in the future.

Reply

I love cycling! I am pretty sure though that I have worn my $100 Costco bike out though. I can’t keep up with my friends who have REAL road bikes.

This weekend…running, hopefully! This has been the toughest training season ever for motivation since I started running!

Reply

So excited for you! Have fun and be safe.

My longest flight was going to Italy.

This weekend we are celebrating my daughter’s fifth birthday.

Reply

Have a safe trip! From the looks of it you have some awesome foods and snacks to keep you entertained! Almost there!

Reply

Airplane rides are quite relaxing when you don’t have your babies with you!!!

Also, I’m guessing your middle name starts with “N”… Hence the “Janaen.” It means “Janae N”

Reply

I hope you have a fun, safe trip! Looks like you’re off to a good start :)

Longest flight was only 4.5 hours. I need to travel more obviously.

Weekend plans include brunch out at our favorite eatery with some friends and double long runs for this girl. Those pancakes will be much needed!!

Reply

Have a great time in Thailand! Probably my favorite place on the planet, I’ve been there 3 times. I’m trying to figure out how old my kids should be before I torture them with that flight! Is 4 yrs and 20 months too young? Training for Grandmas marathon in June, so trying to get a good long run in this weekend. Hopefully it’s not windy…

Reply

People sending the bread basket away? Sorry, I have to put my foot down! I will not tolerate that kind of nonsense.

Laughter trumps crying every time.

Reply

Looks like you are on your way and already having a great time. The longest flight I have been on was a flight from Portland, OR to Amsterdam, to Kenya. Definitely a LONG travel day(s). The movies and constant service definitely help!

I would join you on the road bike anytime. I have been going out for some great rides lately and can’t seem to get enough (except when it is pouring down rain and I’m stuck on the trainer).

Reply

Probably about 12 hours. I think seatmates can really make or break a flight.

This weekend I’m going to a surprise party for a friend of mine. Will be interesting to see if she guesses.

Reply

Singapore was my longest flight I ever took. It was 16 hours. Actually I never minded the long flights I always have plenty to occupy me. Go to Asia isn’t bad but coming home the jet lag is much worse.

Reply

I have never road biked (well since I was a kid if that counts) but I fell in love with mountain biking when I moved to Utah. I promise you would LOVE IT!! I love to run the trails, but you can explore so many cool new trails on a bike. What I’m hinting at is..you should totally take it up…and then come up to Park City to mountain bike!

Reply

weekend plans! speed work and taxes, you can take a guess as to what’s happening first. Also, brooke patting the seat for you to sit was the most heartwarming thing i’ve seen in a while. :)

Reply

Ahh Tokyo is AMAZING!! So jealous of your trip!! :)

Reply

Oh my gosh, I’m so excited for you!!! Have the best trip! :) And that video, with Brooke saying “Go” to the song. Melt. My. Heart.

19 hour flight from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to D.C. My husband and I were traveling home with our newly adopted 7 mo old twins. I think it was an unforgettable flight for the entire plane…what with the crying of two babies and the smell of their 14 blow-out diapers. That flight was even longer than my flight from Kuwait to the Texas when I returning home from being deployed for 12 months with the U.S. Army. Both were sweet rewards though as they meant being reunited with family.

I am excited to read about all of your upcoming grand adventures!!

Reply

It is so totally different flying without kids. My longest nonstop flight was SFO to Auckland, New Zealand. With a 9-week old. I think it was 14 hours. Have a great time!!!!

Reply

Longest flight was last week. 20+ hours of travel. Bogotá – Atlanta – Amsterdam – Germany
Have fun in Thailand!

Reply

Is your middle initial N? I think they put the middle initial right after the first name for whatever reason :)

Reply

Girl!!! Enjoy your time and soak up every minute of it!!! Its not every day you get to just leave the world behind and take off to another country!!!
We are hitting up the movies tonight. . going to see NOAH! The best movie theater, you can order dinner from your seats:-)
Some time tomorrow with my sister n law, brother n law and my little nephew!
Longest flight, last February the hubs and I flew to ITALY!!!!! AMAZING!
Enjoy*enjoy*Enjoy!!!!

Reply

Enjoy your wonderful adventure and cant wait for you to share all that you have experienced! Thank you for the video ~ it is so cute. I dont think I have ever heard Curly speak before and she sounds so adorable.

Reply

Don’t you just love how they can misspell the name Janae? Is it really that hard to spell?

Reply

Lived in India for a while, so the flight from Chicago to Delhi was exhausting. Your outlook is awesome! I know there are ups and downs, but keep that head up. You are so strong!

Reply

Yay for Japan!! My mom is from Japan so we go pretty often. It ends up being a total of about 13 hours of flying. But my longest flight was from Utah to South Africa….5 hours to DC and then another 17 hours to Africa

Love the quote :)

Reply

Yay! Have the BEST time! And thanks for the sweet video. Made me smile :)

Looks like a beautiful run! Brook is adorable as usual. =)

ahhh i wish you could have explored tokyo! narita is kinda a sucky airport right?! i just got back last month! i’ve taken many long arse flights haha but i cannot complain because it’s allowed me to see india, new zealand, japan and the philippines to name a few! my longest leg was a 16hr jaunt. dear god. most are only 12 hours though in one stretch!

Reply

Yay international travels! Have an amazing time in Thailand! Can’t wait to read all about it / super jealous because I haven’t been to Asia yet!

Reply

Does your middle name begin with an “n”? I think that is why there is an “n” after your name.

Have fun in Thailand!

Reply

Glad the flight was smooth, the longest I’ve ever done was St. Louis to London and it wasn’t terrible, although I’m not a great flyer so I don’t know that I’ll ever have an “easy” flight.

Have a wonderful time in Thailand, my mother-in-law just returned from there and had a wonderful time and said that the food, scenery and people were amazing!

I’ll be doing my last weekend of prep for the Go! St. Louis marathon relay and the weather is actually supposed to be nice here so I’m looking forward to it!

Reply

I think the longest flight I’ve been on was from Dallas to Seattle, so not long. We want to go to Hawaii this summer and that is going to be a challenging one, although you make it sounds like *heaven*!!

I’m going to barre class 3 times this weekend and will probably run 6-8 miles. I am working on painting some furniture for our house, so I hope to do some of that as well (I live the exciting life!).

Reply

Why is this the first time I’m ever answering your awesome questions!!!? Lol First, can I tell you my 2 favorite parts of your video? 1. Brooke’s laugh haha <3 2. Hearing your voice :( It kinda made me realize how much I miss you. Can we have a FaceTime date when you get back??

Okay so this wknd I'm going to the gym first thing in the morning. Yes I said gym. I'm on this crazy 12 week fitness plan with a coach and everything. I know I'm slightly crazy but I'll have to tell you why I'm doing this on our FaceTime date. Then Isaiah has a baseball game and Xenia has her soccer game. I'm also watching the woman's conference (can't wait). Going to church and that's about it..

Longest flight ever was to NYC for mine and Jose's 7th wedding anniversary. Jose almost cried and had a minor anxiety attack. I'd never seen him sweat so much hah!! He hates flying!!!

When you go on your bike ride can you imagine me riding next to you!? Picture me doing funny things because that's exactly what is be doing if I was there with you. Love you to pieces!! Have fun! xo

Reply

Almost to Thailand! The longest flight I’ve ever taken was actually the same route you’re on – SF – Tokyo – Bangkok for my Thailand trip last year :)

Reply

Longest flight I have ever been on was from Houston to Hawaii…I think it was about 8 hours. I had ran the Houston Marathon the day before so I did alot of eating and sleeping on that flight!

Reply

Okay so…Brooke patting the seat beside her? My heart melted. So sweet. Already such a good friend.

I hope you have a great time!!!! My longest flight was about 2.5 hours- not long. I’m not doing ANYTHING this weekend and I’m so excited for it!

Girlllll you are going to have the BEST time in Thailand!!! I used to live in Hong Kong, so I’ve been to Thailand a few times and it is amaaaazing! Definitely the longest flight I have been on is JFK–>HKG which is direct but 18-19ish hours. Glad you had a good/smooth flight!

Have a wonnnnderful trip! Brookie will love seeing your pictures when you come back! And so will we!

Xoxoxo

I love that quote too :) Have an awesome trip, enjoy and take care.Brooke is soooo adorable, love the video. I love road biking, when i am not running or surfing and i would come with you but i am all the way here in Australia ;). My longest flight would have had to be 24 hours, yukky i am no good on long flights.

Reply

I flew to Australia and it was insane! Have so much fun!!!

Reply

I THINK my longest flight was Denver to Bangkok….but I’ve had a FEW long flights, so not sure if THAT was the longest, but I’m pretty sure…Oh that video had me laughing…Brooke patting the seat next to her for you sit down…all the kiddos dancing and singing…isn’t it ridiculous just how CUTE kids are doing regular things like, walking down playgrounds steps?!

Reply

omg….Brooke’s little giggle is adorable! You are livin’ the dream running in those trails! Amazing :)

Reply

I live in Oz so everywhere is a long flight!!!! Longest would be Brisbane to London (around 24 hrs) and BNE to JFK (around 24 again including layover). Luckily Asia isn’t too far so Bangers is only 9hrs with a direct flight!!

Reply

I love you so much friend! So glad you liked the treats and diet coke :) you’re the best! I know you will have an amazing time! And I miss you already. I’m already going through withdrawals! Travel safe! Love you!

The longest flight I’ve ever taken was 5 hours to Hawaii. It wasn’t bad because I was so excited to get there and flying Hawaiian airlines is awesome. Before that the longest flight I’d done were less than 3 hours to Washington or Idaho and I always loved flying.

Glad to see your adventure is going well so far.

Reply

I think the flight I took from Chicago to Amsterdam was 12 hours? Luckily, I went with a friend, so it didn’t seem that bad.

This weekend I had my baby shower and spent a ton of time with my in-laws.

Looks like you had a pretty good trip getting to Thailand! I hope the rest is just as fun.

Reply

My longest flight was from Michigan to South Korea, which was ~13 hours long. Not fun when you’re 6’0″ tall and crammed in the middle of two strangers. :(

Reply

Girl, are you flying first class?? That’s one way to recover from a 16 miler for sure.

My longest flight was from Tokyo to Chicago – that one took 14 hours. :)
