I love everything about you and speed work during a flood.

Two crazies met at 5 a.m. in the pouring rain to do some speed work this morning. I always question my life decisions when my alarm clock goes off to get up and run when I am so warm and comfortable in my bed but like always, about 2-3 miles into the run I remember why I choose to get up and do this.

Warm-up and then we did:

2 miles @ 6:19 average pace

1.5 miles @ 6:13 average pace

1 mile in 6:07

We did a recovery jog in between each set and a cool-down for a total of 10 miles. I got home from our run and Brooke was still snoozing so I did 3 more on my treadmill until she woke up for a total of 13.

We were completely drenched from the rain and millions of puddles but training in crazy conditions make us ready to be able to handle anything on race day.

The birthday week festivities have started. My mom, Brooke and I went up to Salt Lake City to hit up our favorite mall.

My niece colored this purse and gave it to Brooke and now she carries it absolutely everywhere with her. Her little strut gets me every time.

DSC 9693

J Crew, I love everything about you.

IMG 7846

Cheesecake Factory just so happens to be connected to the mall (and that is probably why it is our favorite mall). This salad had a big crunchy tortilla on the bottom of the salad with chicken, beans and corn. Oh and also the CF bread is the best way to start any meal.

DSC 9674

And then we attempted to take a picture together with the birthday ice cream but Brooke just wanted to dig in, she doesn’t have time for pictures.

The last 15 seconds of this video is the story of my life. The ice is trying to kill me. BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!!!

I hate running in rain :( I’ll wait it out/go during a lull and that takes care of it most of the time but I hit the treadmill in thunderstorms or heavy downpours.

I fell on ice last week and broke my pinky toe! Ugh so clumsy and now I’m spending a week cross-training instead of running so I should’ve stayed inside clearly.

Reply

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE running in the rain, but not down pour. My first marathon was done in down pour ran…funny thing is I still did another marathon! Raspberries and vanilla greek yogurt sound amazing right now!

I am a air weather runner. I lived in Chicago for 24 frozen years. I now happily live in SoCal and have adjusted to the weather quite nicely ;) Ice/snow not a problem here. i wont even run outside if its below 50 or really raining. Hats off to all you runners that are tougher then me!

Reply

I’ve almost fallen on the ice just trying to clean off my car. This winter is ridiculous!

Reply

I ran the Chicago marathon when it was 30 and snowing one year and then a few years later I ran it again and it was 90. Ah, gotta love the Chicago weather :)

Reply

I like running in the rain in the summer, but when it’s cold, no way.

The worst race I ran in was probably a 10 miler with torrential downpours. There were whole stretches of the race that were ankle deep in water. The chafing was pretty terrible that day.

Reply

Would that be the 2011 Top of Utah one? That was my first marathon and it’s up there with the worst ones for me.. But the one that takes the cake was last year’s Ogden Marathon. It poured rain the ENTIRE time. I’ve never been so happy to finish a race than that one. Normally I don’t mind running in a light rain but when I have to run that far in one and it’s pouring buckets? No thank you.

Reply

I PR’ed last years Ogden because I wanted out of the rain so badly. I think I heard that was the first year it rain in like 10 years for them

Reply

That marathon weather sounds crazy! I’ve never had any really bad or weird race conditions… it’s just always hot here (south Florida).

I like running in the rain because it cools me off! However, I don’t like when the rain is coming at a slant and constantly getting into my eyes … or if it stops raining before I’m down and then it’s all humid and I’m soggy.

This last December I did a half marathon in a blizzard. The roads were NOT clear and I don’t think I would’ve done a training run in those conditions let alone a half-marathon if I’d known what to expect. I’m still happy I did it, but it was quite the experience!

Reply

What day is your birthday??? Or did I miss that along the way?? Mine is tomorrow!! I am loving ice cream cake and really want to try the red velvet blizzard for my birthday….

Reply

Happy early birthday!!! You should come visit me soon… We have a J Crew outlet 5 minutes from my house :) And I pretty much hate running in the wind and rain. Worst conditions in my opinion!

Reply

living in portland i’ve become accustomed to rain running but i won’t do it when it’s a torrential downpour!

i also have an extreme fear of falling and slipping and therefore do not run when it’s icy (or go ice skating).

something that sounds delicious to me right is hot fudge!

That video I feel encompasses the running community, including the fact that she said it was’t slippery and then managed to find an ice patch. Poor girl, bet it hurt (her booty AND her pride) but it makes me happy to see people getting out and enjoying it still.

Reply

I slip and fall even when I am walking in the snow/ice!

Reply

You’ve convinced me. I bought my first pair of Brooks shoes today (Ariels). I decided to wear them around the house to break them in. :)
Yay for pre and post birthday celebrations! I agree with stretching occasions out for as long as possible.
I enjoy running in light rain and I haven’t slipped on any ice because I’ve been staying on my treadmill. :)

Reply

I love running in the rain, as long as it’s not too hard. I always wear a hat if I know I’m going out to run in the rain, so I just love an excuse to wear my hat and that the rain is kind of refreshing.

Reply

tres leches cake sounds amazing right now, I ordered it on Saturday night but it just wasn’t great. and I was pretty upset that I wasted 6 bones on it.

Reply

Ooooh that fall looked painful!

I don’t mind running in the rain in warm temps, but I’m not a fan when it’s cold — I’ll stick to the treadmill in those cases!

Reply

I dont love running in the rain but sometimes I run way better because I dont notice myself getting hot or sweaty because all i feel is rain.

Pizza.

Reply

There is absolutely nothing I love more than running in LIGHT rain, not a downpour. :) A nice drizzle keeps me cool. Also, I too love everything about J. Crew. It is my absolute fave!

Reply

Worst running race conditions…a 5.6-mile cross-country race the morning after about 6 inches of snow fell. It was so fun. For real.

I don’t always mind running in the rain…but I also don’t always like it.

Reply

I don’t mind running in the rain, but one of my marathons was so windy the rain was horizontal. You think you’re used to it, then this big gust would smash against you and you ended up with a wet Willy full of water in your ear. Oh, yeah.

I don’t need ice to fall. I can bite it on any given day in perfectly fine conditions. I usually come up with some excuse for why I fell. And occasionally it’s true.

Craving ALL things right now. I committed to not eat sugar today. So, naturally, all I want to eat is chocolate. And King cake. And a salted caramel dipped in chocolate ice cream sandwich. (Why are these things in my house!?)

Reply

I am pretty pathetic when it comes to bad running conditions, so I hit up the treadmill to avoid the bad. I justify it by telling myself that treadmill running is thought ment training.

Reply

I know I’ve said a million times about the time I slipped and fell in college and broke my arm..but seriously ice is no joke!

That sounds like an incredible workout! Wow, I am floored just thinking about it. Great job as always Janae.

I have ran a bunch of races and the worst that has happened was rain! Knocking on wood!
I love running in the rain!
Loving all the clothes and right now some cheese is sounding really yummy!

Worst conditions I’ve ever run in…my senior year of high school state cross country race. There was deep snow on the ground and it was snowing during the race. And in junior high it started pouring rain during practice while I was wearing a white t-shirt. Traumatized for life.

Reply

I love running in the rain especially in the desert! It’s something about the smell that I absolutely love! I’m craving guacamole & veggies right now.

Reply

I’ve stopped running outside for right now because of the ice, but I’ve slipped plenty while out on walks! I love so much about J.Crew too… except their prices!

Reply

I love running in the rain (as long as it’s not too cold a rain). I find it invigorating for some reason.

A piece of chocolate sounds delicious to me right now. My favorite is the Trader Joe’s organic dark chocolate truffle bars. YUM!

Reply

I don’t mind running in the rain, but a downpour in my eyes is not fun. I have definitely fallen on the ice this year and had some nasty bruises to prove it. I have stuck with the treadmill for the past few weeks for that reason!!

Grapefruit sounds delicious right now :)

Reply

My first half marathon was the Dallas White Rock Half Marathon. It was in the 20s and rained/sleeted the entire time. But I ran fast because I wanted to be done so badly! haha

Reply

Your motivation for running and training inspires me all the time! That sounds like a great workout.

I love all of Brooke’s outfits and the cute headbands are my favorite!

Watermelon does sound delicious right now. Can’t wait for spring/summer! I would also love a milkshake; my sister and I were talking about them last night when it was too late to go out and get one.

Reply

Running in the rain can be fun, but only if I am PREPARED to be running in the rain. If a beautiful blue sky suddenly starts to pour, I am not a happy camper ;)

Reply

Oh man! All of these comments are making me so grateful for my SoCal running weather! The worst race I’ve had was a half marathon that was about 30 degrees at the start and two of the hotel busses were late and so the start was delayed about 40 minutes AFTER we had discarded our sweatpants and bags!

Right now a peanut butter sandwich sounds to die for! Oh wait, I’m eating one as my afternoon snack ;)

Reply

The salt lake marathon last year…rained on me the entire time!!
I love the rain but not running in it. I can’t stand being pelted in the face!
Yum Cheesecake Factory sounds delicious right now!

I fell hard on some ice this weekend during my long run. Some guy saw me and laughed … Didnt even ask if I was okay first (then it would have been fine to laugh!)

Reply

My first half marathon rained cats and dogs….lol. But it was so worth it when I crossed the finish line. I ran another 1/2 marathon in February here in Nova Scotia following an ice storm which resulted in some super serious tricky footing.

Your training motivates me to no end! :)

Reply

I kind of like running in the rain :) it’s fun. Until your shoes are soaked. That’s not fun. Ok girl we need to celebrate this week!! I’m all about birthdays!

Worst running conditions, I did a race once during track season in high school where the wind gusts were 45mph. it was HORRIBLE!!!

Cupcakes sound great right now!!

Today is day one of a 7 day juice cleanse so every last, little piece of food sounds delicious. There’s a Chipotle bag staring at me right now, so that’s the most dominant craving. I think I could like running in the rain, but my one and only jacket I have didn’t pass the rain test the other day so rain is not that fun, right now.

Reply

I have been really lucky with race conditions for half marathons. I once ran a 5k in single digit temps and wind. I could have done without that.

I like running in the rain, it keeps me cool. Plus once you’re soaked it’s like, might as well keep going. Reminds me of being a kid and playing outside in the rain.

I have definitely fallen a couple of times on the ice this winter.

Chocolate sounds good to me right now…and pretty much all the time.

That video is epic.

I like running in the rain, I don’t like how nasty it makes my shoes.

I fall just walking on the ice.

Reply

Cashews sound good right now.

Ran a 5k in 32 degrees with a 25 mph wind. Luckily it was short.

I just had the most amazing pineapple/coconut smoothie and I just finished it and it STILL sounds delicious. Would it be weird to make another….?? I agree- J Crew is perfection. And I’ve never run in ice or snowy conditions, since it doesn’t get that cold here! Seems so scary though!!

Reply

I ran a half two years ago in MI during such awful blizzard conditions that I got lost on the course. It was so slippery and blustery that at a turnaround they had race officials stopping runners about 1/8 of a mile before and demanded that we walk!!!
I’m running that same course this Sat. Pray for me!!!!!

I was just watching some fashion week coverage and spotted little Harper Beckham. She is Brooke’s doppelganger! Both are little fashionistas too.

The worst was the insane downpour during the 5k at the Zoo. Not only did I run, but we stayed and visited the zoo afterwards. I was freezing for the entire day!

I just saw that video this morning! Poor girl! I’ve fallen 3 times so far this winter, which is somewhat of a miracle because last year at this time I think it was probably about 20 times!!

My aunt made these pecan pie bars and brought them to our family dinner, and ever since then I have been craving them!!!

Reply

I’ve actually been pretty lucky with race conditions (knock on wood) I think the worst I have dealt with is a little rain but nothing bad. I have dealt with some pretty hot temperatures which can be frustrating, but I think rain or snow can be worse!

I have fallen down on ice this winter but not well running. I was texting and walking… that’ll teach me. Right now some freshly baked bread sounds amazing.

i wanna try out some brooks shoes. i know you said you are loving the pure connects but do you feel like the pure flows are more supportive? i need a little more support but still want a lightweight shoe. what about the pure cadence? have you tried those? i guess i’m just trying to find out what the difference is between all the pure line shoes. thanks!

Reply

I don’t run in the rain. Ever. I always worry about what will happen if it rains on race day but just can’t bring myself to get out there and train in it.

Reply

Some of my running group friends and I ran the Cloud Snapple Half Marathon about four years ago and it started snowing HARD about one minute into the race. We had at least four inches of snow on the ground by the time we finished and it was so slippery at places. I had huge bushy snow covered eyelashes and eyebrows! And of course my camera battery died so we didn’t get any pictures!

My PR marathon was in the pouring rain, so I guess I don’t mind! :-)

The brisket I made for dinner didn’t just sound delicious, it WAS delicious!

Reply

Worst race conditions that you have ever had?
My last leg of Ragnar Napa was 8.5 miles in the rain and hail!

Do you like running in the rain?
Yes – it sprinkled and rained on my run Sat. and it felt SO good!

Have you fallen on the ice this winter yet?
Lucky to live where ice is a non-issue :)

I tried to run the last time in snowed in Charlotte and it was stressful running on that ice!

I’ve *never* ran in the rain before! Something to add to my list?

I did an 8 miler Saturday in the rain. It felt pretty amazing! Almost like running in the weather like that makes you a bad ass runner.

I haven’t managed to fall on the ice yet…although it’s probably a good thing I don’t run outside in the winter, because I’ve had a couple of close calls just walking the dog.

I just went to Cheesecake Factory this weekend and had the BBQ salmon dinner…yumm!
That sundae looks divine!
Was prob mean if me I lol when I saw the video. Ouch!
I don’t like when my feet get wet but I’ll take that over the heat. Haven’t ran in bad weather for a race yet. Jinx I got a race this Saturday!

Reply

Oh – that poor girl in the video! I slipped on ice (while trying to get to class) years ago and broke my leg and I have been so tentative about snow and ice every since! A full Wisconsin winter with crutches was enough to put the fear of slipping in me!

Reply

Worst Conditions: After it snowed a foot and it was 14 degrees and windy.

What sounds delicious: ICE CREAM OF COURSE!

I haven’t run in the rain yet, just snow, ice and freezing conditions.

Reply

I despise running in the rain. DESPISE. And the wind. :)

I have only fallen twice, but they were both bad, B-A-D spills, within one month of each other and there was blood for both and a broken bone on the second.

What sounds delicious is Godiva chocolate. A box all for me. Yes, please!

Reply

Bah you just made me crave watermelon! I’m also craving chocolate chip cookies– I have some in the cabinet but I’m trying to keep myself away from them… haha.

Reply

Someday I will run as fast and as far as you. You are super awesome!

My first 10k I ran into about a 40 mph headwind for the first half. It sucked so bad. I’ll run in just about anything but the wind kills me every time. I actually enjoy running in the rain and the snow. It makes me feel like some sort of bad ass even though I’m totally not.
I fell getting out of my car at the gym (there was freezing fog) and I landed first on my step rail of my car and then the ground. I got a huge bruise and I couldn’t sit on my left butt cheek for two weeks.
What sounds good to me right now? Chocolate chip cookie dough. Always and forever.

Reply

With this CRAZY Midwest winter, I have screamed as I slipped about a million times, but I have yet to actually fall—doing 12 tomorrow, so I hope I didn’t just jinx myself :)

Reply

I think running in the rain can be refreshing! It makes me run faster too :) I have lucked out with race days and haven’t experienced any bad conditions! Cake sounds very good to me right now…mmm thanks a lot! ;)

Reply

The worst race conditions I ever had was heat and humidity so extreme that they had to cancel the race and I didn’t get an official finish time. The big bummer was that particular race was my first half marathon, so although I covered all 13.1 miles, I didn’t technically finish. I don’t mind running in the rain as long as I have the proper gear–especially my Brooks Ghost GTXs. :)

Reply

I saw that news video last night! So funny – that would totally be me too! The worst race conditions I’ve ever run in was a cross country meet in high school when it was pouring rain the entire race and there was a section that we ran through a foot of standing water! Ca-razy!

Reply

Rain yes wind no no no.
I ran my 6th half on Saturday and it was so cold/icy/snowy my water froze, there was only 1 water station on course and my gels turned rock hard. Also my fingers were going numb even with gloves so I had to tuck them in my jacket sleeve and pray that frostbite wouldn’t occur. It was brutal with a capital B. I swear I am framing that medal haha. I survived with my slowest time but hey I got it done ;)

The brown bread at Cheesecake Factory = amazing.

Reply

I LOVE running in the rain as much as I love ice cream…that is A LOT!

Be careful out there!
By the way, I love CF!! The vanilla bean cheesecake is delicious!! Try it sometime! :)

Reply

I don’t mind running in the rain if it’s warm, if it’s cold and there’s any kind of precipitation or wind, I’m inside.

I had some Starbucks’ salted caramel hot chocolate (they sell the packets at Target) with coconut almond milk… it’s so magical… so that sounds really good now. I hate winter! Especially when I have to leave the house.

Reply

I LOVE running in the rain . . . and snow. But not ice! Delicious: I am randomly craving Betty Crocker strawberry cupcakes with strawberry frosting.

Also, I just have to say if I have a little girl someday she will always wear her hair in a bun like Brooke. Gah – so cute!!!

I do like running in the rain. A light rain is fine, but not a downpour. My last race was in the rain and I got a PR!

Buffalo Wild Wings teriyaki wings sound like HEAVEN to me. I think it’s the only food that I have a literally crave all the time.

You’re totally right about the Cheesecake Factory bread. It’s the best!!

What a great run you had! I seriously don’t know how you keep that crazy fast pace! I’d feel like I was dying haha. I love running in the rain!! It’s always been one of my favorites. And a couple years ago, I got lucky enough to run a 5K and the 10K right after, and the whole thing was in the rain :D. I really want a latte from starbucks haha.

Reply

I love running in the rain in the summer – not sure how you do it in the winter cold. That sounds like the opposite of fun. But it must make you feel really hard core!

The worst race I did was a Jingle Bell race in Atlanta and I wore short sleeves and capris and thought I would warm up (because HELLO, it’s Atlanta) and I DID NOT. I was soooooooooooooo cold I could barely move and my hands were frozen. Luckily it was only a 5k or something, but I wanted to cry I was so cold.

I just finished my breakfast so I’m not craving anything right now. I also ate 1.5 pieces of Southern-Style Strawberry Cake for dinner last night that I made for my sister’s 30th bday yesterday (recipe from Joy the Baker), so I am a bit sugared out still. It was REALLY sweet.

Reply

I laughed so hard at that video when I saw it. It has been icy and snow covered for weeks and if not that then we are having -20 weather with windchills so running outside isn’t a good idea. but people like to run outside and “be tough” by running in the elements.

Reply

Wow 13 miles before Brooke woke up, that is fantastic.

Worst race conditions – does 50 degrees count?
Running in the rain – doesnt really bother me
Fallen on ice – yes, just did that on Saturday
One things that sounds delicious – Cheescake factory, thanks for that!

fries always sound delightful to me.

And I don’t fall on the ice because I just refuse to run on it. I prefer to get injured falling off my couch.

Reply

I ran a mud/obstacle race in September (when it is usually hot) wearing a tank top and capris. The weather took a random sudden dip into the 40s and I was completely unprepared. The first obstacle was jumping into a pool of ice water too. Such a lovely experience, but now i have another notch on my belt.

Reply

I ran a half marathon one year on the COLDEST day of the year. I live in Florida, we don’t do cold, but the morning of this race it was sleeting. Sleeting? I doesn’t sleet in Florida ever, but it did on race day. Yipee! It only got up to 30 degrees during the race and rained/sleeted the whole time. It was just awful and horrendous.

Bacon. I would love a huge platter full of crispy bacon.

and some orange juice.

worse weather I would say was a freezing pouring rain marathon in 34 degree weather.

I’m not a fan of the rain. I’ve ran a lot of races in the rain, I hate it so much it makes me run faster.

I hate running in the rain! I am a wimp haha

Something about that brown bread at CF, I love it too!

The worst race day conditions are a tie..i once did a half in the negative temps where i never got warm even once. Then, one year i did the Boston marathon when it was 80. In April. And you couldn’t breathe. Sooo. I don’t really know which was worse…Although—spectators were giving me popsicles during the marathon for Boston…and THAT was wonderful. And ironically, in the half marathon..i WAS a popsicle :)

I love, love love running in the rain. i almost never care that it is raining unless it is FROZEN rain. then i care bc that is yucky.

YES….I have Fallen. I split open my knee in three spots…i have permanent bruises bc it was three months ago and the scar is STILL there. Yuck.

Enjoy every SECOND of your bday week pretty girl!!!

Reply

you’re a rockstar for running in the rain and snow! i’ve only run when it’s been sprinkling, but never during a rainstorm. i’m pretty clumsy, so i’d probably trip and injure myself ;)

i’ve never bought anything from j. crew, but they have the cutest clothes. i should probably change that soon :)

cantaloupe sounds REALLY good right now. i’ve been craving summer fruit like crazy lately. hurry up, summer!!

Reply

worst race conditions were during the Flying Pig 1/2 a few years ago. It was POURING at the start, but eventually it kept letting up until a light drizzle through the last 3 miles. it ended up being a big PR race for me, and i think it was because i tried to have fun running in the rain instead of worrying!

Reply

Haha I totally laughed at that video and I don’t usually laugh when people fall but man!

Reply

I don’t really mind the rain and it’s a good thing because two of my races last year were in the rain. One was a really cold mud run and the other one was on the 4th of July! (It’s not supposed to rain on the 4th of July;)
It’s actually the cold that I hate. I was pretty proud of myself for getting in a run this morning at 18 degrees. I know that’s not a big deal for a lot of people, especially you northerners, but I live in TN and prefer running without all those layers and in 50 degree temps:)

Reply

I like running in cooler temperatures, but this December I did a 5km race, there was a good snow pack on the trails and the temperature was -42 Celsius with the windchill (that’s about -44 F). I stayed warm with my layers, and snowboarding socks but I had full on facecicles! I’m glad it was for a great charity!

Reply

I ran a half-marathon in the rain. It wasn’t as bad as expected. I luckily have not fallen on any ice yet this year. However, I did knock my head against an icicle hanging off my house today because I was avoiding slipping on the ice covering the ground.

Reply

My last half marathon was in the pouring rain, and it was miserable. Not to mention it totally killed the after-party and I didn’t even finish ONE of my free beers. That is a sin!

I only like running in the rain if it is a slight drizzle, and preferably only during the last mile of a run. Otherwise, I totally hate it. There’s something about my face/hair being soaking wet that makes me a little crazy in the head.

Yes, I have fallen on the ice this year and it just so happened to be the smallest patch of ice ever….but it was just enough to throw me off balance, and then I did a crazy flailing-my-arms dance before digging it. Pretty comical stuff once I figured out I wasn’t injured!

I have been craving some REAL Wisconsin cheese from my favorite cheese store back home. It is sooooo good! I think I just might have to call them now and place an order :)

Reply

wow! I feel so bad for her!! That was a hard fall! I almost wiped out at work yesterday on my way inside!! The ice is out to get everyone this winter! Revenge of the ice!!

I ordered that exact same salad after running Boston last year. I have not had it since and now I want one.

I ran a half marathon thru Nashville where it was 50 degrees and raining.by the time I started I was soaked, there was water gushing down the streets, and when I got done it took me 20 minutes to find my boyfriend in the parking lot…I had seen him when I crossed the finish line but lost him after that and was so cold and so so wet…….not fun..but I still managed to finish with a good time!
