Our last day in California and BROOKE is back partying with us again.

Our goal for yesterday was to spend as much time as possible outside in the 70 degree weather.  For about 30 minutes we just laid down on the sidewalk and talked about all of our plans for this summer when we can spend all day outside again.

IMG 7038

We were pretty hardcore and went on a walk for an hour and then did some pushups on the trunk.

IMG 7039

We walked by some pretty memorable places like Yum Yum Donuts… aka the donut shop I went to a little too often when I was living in San Jose.  Open 24 hours a day = they make people happy for 24 hours a day.  Apple fritters for the win.

IMG 7043

Whenever we go on walks we always take pictures of our favorite houses (kind of creepy, I know) that we see along the way.  I like to get ideas for the house that I get when I move out of the basement in 20 years;)

We also have deep discussions about things like how squirrels would be so much scarier if their tails were shaved.

IMG 7040

Early lunch before church.  I am on a bbq chicken salad kick lately.

IMG 7042

And after church Bangs had her famous BAKLAVA (she puts chocolate in her baklava which makes it extra good) for us.

IMG 7036

I think she should set a goal to make this every time that she sees me.  I also think she needs to open up a restaurant/bakery one of these days.

IMG 7041

While waiting to get the Brookers back.  Good memories from the days that I used to road bike and that one time I did a century.  My century was by far the hardest thing I have ever done exercise wise… that is a long time to be on the bike.

IMG 7044

And at 4 pm we were back together again.  I never used to understand why it was so hard for my sister when her kiddos went with their dad for the weekend but now I fully get it.  It always feels beyond amazing to get them back though.

She is pretty stoked about the elmo sandwich cutter that I found for her.

IMG 7070

Dinner at my aunt’s house. They are the absolute best.

IMG 7055

Take out from Buca Di Beppo.

IMG 7069

Early flight back to Utah today.

If you could choose any place in the world to live ($ doesn’t matter for this question)… where would you live?

Any road bikers?  How often do you bike?

Tell me one goal that you have for this week!

I’d live in Annecy in France. Lakes, mountains, hiking, running, cycling, skiing and baguette every day! But in the meantime, San Francisco is pretty perfect!!!!

Glad you got your baby back!!

Reply

Ahhh I lived there for a few months, it’s perfect!

Reply

So jealous!!

Reply

I would live in SF or NYC. I love big cities with good public transportation (I hate driving…so random)

My goal is to go to a fitness class every day this week (it’s free for the first week of the semester at my school!). I just had my first cycling class today. I hated life for the first 20 minutes, but now I’m hooked!! :)

Reply

I’m so glad Brooke is back :)

Reply

Toronto. My favourite city in the world. Bonus is that I already live there ;). I would love to get more into biking this summer. I genuinely enjoy it, but had my bike stolen a few years back and have yet to replace it! Glad you and Brooke are back together!!

Reply

This week I start training for my half marathon in March. So the goal for this week is to get all my training in.

What a fun week you guys had!

If I could live anywhere and my parents would go too, I’d love to live near water and the mountains. Maybe near Lake Tahoe. Our kids are so close to my parents that we couldn’t go somewhere without them. :)

Reply

I am not a road biker but I spin sevearl times during the week. Maybe one day I will buy a road bike and see what it is all about, but just not in the budget right now :)

So glad you have sweet Brooke back! Have a safe trip home!

Reply

The reuniting is the best!! Bucca is the best!! I love their Cesar salad!! If I could live anywhere in the world it would probably be on some Island in the Caribbean. I do not bike at all but would love to.
My goal for this week is to drink enough water everyday.

Reply

Wow. I haven’t been here for a while.

Yes, it’s so difficult with divorce and having your child court ordered to not be with you, for lack of a better term, sucks. I went through that from 2005-2010. Then, her dad gave up all rights to her due to child support in which he could not pay. It’s hard because my daugther also lost the paternal side as she no longer sees them and she lost her only father figure.

Now I’m re-married and we do our best to make our family stable and happy. :)

Reply

We have that elmo sandwich cutter too :-) It makes lunchtime that much more fun! Glad you and Brooke are reunited! Bangs’ baklava even looks like it belongs in a bakery haha. I’ve never tried baklava but I’d definitely want some with chocolate in it.

Reply

That squirrel comment totally cracked me up. It’s so true!
I would live right where I am right now (small town Idaho) because I love it.
I’m not a road biker yet but I just signed up for the Spudman (my first tri, yikes!) so I’ll be biking in the spring and praying I don’t get hit by a car. Is it weird that that’s my biggest fear related to road biking? People get hit while riding bikes around here more often than I’d like to admit.
Also, my goal for this week is working on my swim technique so I don’t drown in the river on race day :)

Reply

Spudman is a great tri! You will love it!! Swimming in the river is my fave!

Reply

San Fran is actually my favorite place in the world :) You went to some very familiar (to me) sights this weekend!

I’m a very Novice road biker! There’s a ride that I’m doing in August and I wanted to sign up for the century…but it’s 6 weeks before my first marathon so I think I would be better off focusing on the 50 or 75-mile ride. 100 is a lot!

Reply

I’d live in some very rural place in Wyoming or Texas (very different, I know) with no one around for miles :) or I second a previous comment and say Annecy which is pretty much heaven on earth.

Reply

Yay to have Brooke back!! Have a safe flight home!
I would have to say I would love to live down south, I love the southern charm, hospitality and just the laid back atmosphere.
I road bike all the time in the summer, I love it!
This week is all about trying to do more speed for running, I need to get my speed back!

Reply

what an awesome friendship you have with your sister, so unique.. have you heard of http://www.blogilates.com/ ?? is a super cool chic that teaches yoga/pilates, super fun.. she’s in Park city today and tomorrow, you should go

Reply

I want to live in Hawaii! Its so pretty there and WARM! My goal this week is not be such a woosy this week when it comes to running in the cold. Half marathon training starts again soon.

Reply

If I could live anywhere I think I would pick San Fran … or I would stay right where I am. I love living near a beach and don’t think I could ever give it up. The idea of living near mountains sounds amazing too, but I don’t think I could handle the cold!

That chocolate baklava looks amazing!!! YUM!

Hope you have an easy flight home!

Reply

Probably Arizona during the winter and back up here to Canada in the summer/fall. I was never a huge fan of winter, but now that’s it’s really hindered my running, I want out during the winter.

Reply

I’m a road biker! In the winter I hardly bike at all, but the rest of the year I bike almost every day to commute to work!

If I could live anywhere, I’d probably choose Colorado or Northern California. I love the mountains and epic trails they have out there. All in all I’m pretty happy in New Hampshire though, and my husband and I both have a lot of family here, so it’d be hard to leave!

Reply

I would stay in my home state of Arizona but move up north to either Sedona or Flagstaff.

One goal for this week – get back on my training plan and I’d like to introduce some weight lifting to my program

http://runningschlub.blogspot.com/

Reply

I think the thought of squirrels with shaved tales will haunt my dreams.

My goal for this week is to figure out how to calm down my dog when they are doing construction in the basement. I think it might be a futile effort.

Reply

Hahah tailless squirrels would be so creepy. My goal for this week is to run without shin pain!

Reply

I think I would live in Hawaii. I just went there over the holidays and it was the most stunning place. I’m glad you have Brooker back. I can imagine how hard it would be…but luckily it looks like you had a lot of fun things to keep you distracted.

My goal for the week is to kick my running rut in the butt, and get back out there and start increasing my endurance again.

Reply

How nice to be in warm weather for a few days! One goal this week…get over this cold and get more than 5 hours of sleep…and run of course. :-)

Reply

Last week, I wasn’t able to get in as many runs as I normally do and I was a little less strict on my diet plan. So my goal this week is to get in an extra run or 2 and to get back to eating clean.

And because it’s cold and snowy here, my little girl has been watching a bit too much tv. So I’d like to get her out more and to be more creative with things to do at home that don’t involve the tv!

Reply

I bike! I have biked several 40-50 + lengths and 2 centuries. At this point I run and lift more than bike.

Reply

Ever since we did Ragbrai, bike ride across Iowa, I did a Sunday ride of 2 hours with Chris while the weather was still nice, and continued the trend by making Sundays my trainer ride.

Goal this week is to get myself to be an organized efficient machine for next week……I have the busiest week ever next week.

Safe travels home.

Reply

I am so glad you are reunited with her!!! She is so adorable!

I wish it were that warm here in UT…… :/ I am not a biker, but I did a half ironman, and so 56 miles on the bike felt ubbbberrr long to me. hah!

Reply

Awww YAY! So glad you have Brookers back again!

I would probably live right on the beach in San Diego. Beach life is right up my alley!

Reply

10 mile long run with no pain. Heading to the Chiro this morning.
I need some sunshine. Looks like you had a nice time.

Reply

I would say San Diego or Orange County for the US. I’d take Chicago if the winters weren’t so awful….and I’d choose Cape Town if it wasn’t so far away from the rest of my family!!!

Nike Women’s is amazing. I am running the DC half in April to compliment running the SF full in 2010!

Reply

My goal for the week is to no longer be a weekend splurger! I’m so tired of how I feel on Sundays!

Reply

So this has nothing to do with any of the questions you asked, but have you ever wondered why you don’t see squirrel poop? I mean, they must poop?! Is it just too small to see? The unofficial mascot at the school I work is the squirrel because we have SO MANY of them and yet I never worry about stepping in squirrel poop!

And to add legitimacy to my comment, if I could live anywhere in the world it would be the shore…preferably somewhere in NJ where I spent my summers, but pretty much anywhere on the shore!

Reply

Best question ever. Now I need to find the answer.

Reply

I live in Brooklyn and there’s a squirrel (I call him Gus Gus) that I feed every morning so my cats can freak out and watch him through the window annddd…He doesn’t have any fur on his tail!!! He must be a pretty gangsta squirrel and gotten in a fight..it’s actually pretty cute/funny looking!

Glad you made the best out of your weekend!!

Reply

I would pick Anywhere warm!! :)

Reply

If I could live anywhere, then it would have to be at the beach. Somewhere sunny but not too hot. I’m not even particular about what beach :)
I don’t know that I would consider myself a road biker, but I do bike 1-2 times each week.
One goal this week is to get my homework done early so that I can enjoy my weekend. This probably would have been easier if I didn’t leave all of my books at school…

Reply

I would either live in London or Spain. I’ve visited both with my family, and absolutely loved each place. Maybe I’d live in London and have a vacation home in Spain! A girl can dream!

Reply

Yay looks like you guys had a fun time.

I would live in Italy or Greece and definitely on the water. :)
I am running the Miami Half Marathon in two weeks so this week I really want to focus on quality runs. I am hoping for 3 nice runs and 1 speed run.

Reply

East Coast for me. Boston is home, but I also love NYC. So much culture, good food, sports team, public transportation.

Reply

So glad you & Brooke are back together again!

My goal for the week is to get in a 6 mile run – it will be the farthest I’ve run since having my baby boy, but I’ve got a half marathon on the books now so I have to start getting serious! :)

Reply

SO so so jealous of your beautiful California pics!

Reply

I don’t mean this rudely at all, but my sister is Mormon and she is not allowed to buy anything on Sundays, like from restaurants, retail stores, anything that causes other people to work. Does your church have different rules? I would love it if I could convince her to get sushi with me on Sundays!

And i Love living in Fl, but I could definitely live in Costa Rica. Pura Vida!!

Reply

Hey!!!!! So we don’t shop or go out to eat on Sundays either unless we are traveling:) hope you are having an amazing day!

Reply

Ah I love Buca!

Goal this week… run 1 mile after crossfit every night.

Reply

So glad you have your girl back!!

My husband and I bought road bikes a couple years back, but only bust them out every so often…couple times a year? Which is stupid since we live right next to a trail that runs along the water! We need to get back into that. Also, way to do a century ride! Maybe that should be my next goal….

Have a great week HRG!

Reply

Distance makes the heart grow fonder. Although you’re apart for a few days, the reunion makes you appreciate and love each other even more. <3

I miss seeing Bang's friends face all the time! As if it isn't creepy, but she just seems like a good person to be around.

Reply

i am soooo ready for it to be warm here. glad you got to escape to warmer temps for a few. xoxo

Reply

It’s a tie between La Jolla in San Diego area and Capitola/Santa Cruz. I love my beach :) I haven’t been on a road bike in years. Mine is collecting dust. I use my mountain bike every so often for the trails.

Goal: finish two paintings.

Hope you had a fun time for your quick trip to CA. It’s been unseasonably warm but gorgeous out here :) Glad you have been reunited with Brooke.

Reply

I totally saw you and your sister taking the picture outside YumYum when we were driving yesterday :-)

Reply

You should have come said hi!

Reply

Glad you have Brookers back. She looks really thrilled about that Elmo cookie cutter. Maybe we’ll take your word for it? ;)

Did she like the puppy purse??

I do love San Francisco. But the world is so big, I’m not sure I could narrow it down. If money is no object, can I just travel a lot? Have six homes? One in SF, one in Switzerland…you get the idea.

As for my week…more successful and far less stressful than last week. That’s my aim. :)

Reply

She loved it! Thank you for remembering! I hope your week is way less stressful!

Reply

Sydney, Australia! My fiance and I are studying abroad there a year from now. I visited there for a few weeks many years ago, but LOVED it. It’s such a great place! <3 PS I totally take pictures of houses I like too #creepy

Reply

You and your sister are so beautiful. It’s lovely to see the relationship you have together.

If money weren’t an issue, I would hire a translator (until I learned the language) and move to France or Italy.

I’m a road biker (mostly because I’m always injured and can’t run)! I live in New York so it’s too cold to ride outside (for me) a good portion of the year, but when I can get outside I’m on the bike about 4 times a week. During the cold months I ride my bike on the trainer inside usually 4 days a week.

Reply

I LOVE your sisters purple sneakers! Brand/ model Please!

Reply

I love the Pacific Northwest (Portland and Seattle), but I would ultimately like to live in Minnesota where all my family and friends are.

My goal this week is to find a different job.

Reply

I would live somewhere in Italy for the beautiful views and of course the delicious food. One goal I have for this week is to go to a yoga class!

Reply

I would stay exactly where I am in Bend, Oregon. It has the small town charm and world of recreation/adventure outside my doorstep…however, I wouldn’t mind a vacation home somewhere tropical. :)

I do a lot of road biking in the late spring and summer. It’s a great way to get out and see the scenery.

Reply

I think I’d stay right here in Oahu! We’ve been here a year in corporate housing in Waikiki which is crazy busy, so I’d buy a house in Hawaii Kai and be content. I love the active lifestyle and laid back attitude, along with amazing people!

My husband is a hard core cyclist, he’s done one double century and is signed up for another in March! I’m doing good to ride 15 on my mountain bike ;)

Reply

I like the region I’m in…East Bay. I’ve narrowed it down to 7 houses, all decent driving distance to my kids’ schools. But second choice would probably be St. Jean Cap Ferrat or Villefrance-sur-Mer. In a beautifully restored villa, of course.

Reply

YAY Brookers is back!! Life is complete again!!! :) Seriously you are so strong, Janae, I admire you in SO many ways.
Now I can’t stop laughing at the picture of a squirrel with a shaved tail! LOL!

Reply

Yay for Brooke being back!!
I would loooooooove to live in Tokyo. I spent two months there back in 2009 and it was an incredible experience!

Reply

I honestly don’t know where I would live if I could live anywhere! Somewhere warmer than Utah, but not too hot, or too busy haha. My goals this week is to clean my house really, really good and keep it clean until my baby girl comes :) Wish me luck!

Reply

Did Brooke like her puppy purse?

Reply

I wish California were cheaper to live in! I think it’s a tossup for me between Hawaii (vacation that never ends?) and California.

Reply

Arizona! My home…it’s the best place to live! I’m doing my first Barre class this week. It was a 2014 goal of mine.

Reply

I love looking at houses when I’m running – my mom actually got the idea of what color to paint our house while she was on a run with a friend! If I could live anywhere in the world I would want 3 small little places – one in Southern California near my in-laws, one in Massachusetts by my family, and one in Europe somewhere, probably France or Switzerland! Those are my favorite countries!

Reply

squirrels with hairless tails sounds like something out of my nightmares lol

Reply

I don’t even have to think about it. I’d go back to Paris in a heartbeat.

Reply

I’d live in Manhattan if money was no object — I’d spend all day just seeing musicals/plays :)

Glad you are reunited with your wee one!

Reply

If I could live anywhere in the world, it would be South Carolina, right near the ocean. More specifically, Kiawah Island. I absolutely love it there, and the weather is perfect running weather most of the year. My one big goal is to just make it through this week – I have a really stressful week ahead of me. Just tryin to take it one day at a time…with lots of running added in the mix!

Reply

I would live on the beach in Oahu!!
Glad you have Brooke back with you!!

Reply

Yay for Brooke being back! My kids are 6 and 12 and I still miss them when they stay with my mom or something!
I think I would still live in Illinois…just in a nicer house. Or on second thought, I hate winter so maybe California! :)

Reply

Brooke looks so happy to be back with you!!

Reply

I would love to live by the beach! Goal for this week: more clean eating

Reply

so glad brooke is back! i’m happy you were able to enjoy yourself this weekend. your san francisco trip looked like a blast :)

if i could live anywhere, i’d choose italy. i studied abroad in rome during college and miss it like crazy!!

Reply

Okay, squirrels with shaved tails?! Basically very fast jumping rats?!?!? :0 I don’t think I want to be near that! LOL.

I can’t even imagine how happy you were to be reunited with Brooke :)

Reply

Waikiki. We went there for our honeymoon. I just loved the weather.

My husband bought me a really nice road bike for my birthday last year. He’s a triathlete and is encouraging me to lean towards that direction. I am honestly terrified of riding on the road, especially on our country roads in Kansas. I ride in the same town I run in and enjoy the change of pace. I also use my bike on our trainer in the winter.

My goal this week is to stick to week one of my half marathon training plan!

Reply

YAY!! So glad you’re back together again!! :) I hope you are having a great Monday!! :)
Who doesn’t like their sandwich shaped like Elmo?! ;)

Reply

Hi! This has nothing to do with this blog post, but have you heard the song Cannonball by Lea Michele? It is my favorite song to run to, and it also gives me a mental kick in the butt when i’m having a rough/emotional day.

Lots of love to you and Brooke!

Reply

If I could live anywhere it would be Hawaii so that I could surf all the time, good surf too, it would be epic!

I don’t bike because I like my bones and I dont want to break any of them ever again.

My goal this week is to make my hubs feel as special as he makes me feel because tomorrow is his birthday.

Oh, and taking pictures of cool houses you would love to own is not wierd…(I do it too!)

Reply

It’s great that you have Brooke back with you!

I don’t bike outside, but I just bought a spin cycle for my basement gym! Can’t wait to get it put together and get going on it!

Reply

I would live somewhere where the food is awesome, plentiful and cheap and anywhere close to water.

I bought a road bike when I quit smoking 8 years ago. It’s pretty and fast. I did a couple triathlons but the closest one is 1 1/2 hours away and $80 just to register so it’s been awhile even though they are a blast. I bike on some cross training days, but I used to bike 20km a day 5 or 6 days a week when I was a teenager. I was 25 before I started running and the sole purpose was because my clothes didn’t fit after quitting smoking. Can’t imagine life without running now.

My goal is hills (done) core and circuit later in the week and to put together and plan my youngest son’s 1st birthday party!! Can’t believe how quickly the year went.

Reply

Baklava just may be my favorite dessert. Add in chocolate!? Wow, am I jealous!

That pic of you and your sis is adorable.

Reply

I would actually probably live in San Fran :)

Reply

Isnt a squirrel with a shaved tail the same thing as a RAT!?!

Reply

I can’t eve imagine what it would be like to let your babies go…so I am so happy you have each other to lean on when you do. Love you both more than you’ll ever know! My two sisters. :) I wish I really was sometimes…. xoxoxo

Reply

No question-I would live in Colorado. We’re putting together a plan to make that happen!

Reply

I would live in San Francisco (where I live now) just in a bigger place :) especially after going to the east coast this past weekend – it was colddd!

Reply

At this point in time, I would LOVE to move to Portland, OR. Although, I would much prefer to live in another country…Thailand or Italy or…LOVE biking. I just need to get another bike. I would love to do some races and do a triathlon some day – it’s on the bucket list. :) And one of my goals for the week is to do my FIRST speed training workout on Wednesday! Scared!

Reply

One goal for this week… to get keep up my half marathon training with all this snow we are supposed to be getting. Snow makes me want to hibernate in the house, until the very last minute when I have to go into work. We never get snow days, unless we are already scheduled off.
Glad Brooke’s back!

Reply

Creepy squirrels for sure!

If I could live anywhere, I would move back to my Oregon. I’ve been seriously considering it lately…

Reply

One goal for me is to drink mostly water. I’ll allow coffee a couple times :)

Reply

Totally agree on the Nike Women’s…..There is a reason 30,000 people run the race and there is still a lotto to get in!

Reply

I would live in Ireland. Hands down, Ireland!
