Another snow day over here in Utah.

DSC 9431

I did zero cardio today.  I took a pump class but I didn’t do any cardio.  This is very weird for me because I usually focus in on running (and in the old days spin and the elliptical) and throw in some weights if I have extra time.  Today I wanted to give my calves a day off after getting them scraped yesterday.  Another reason for the lack of running was that I just didn’t feel like running…  Don’t gasp all at once.

I also didn’t have enough time to fit in cardio today because we had to make cookies.  Best excuse ever.

DSC 9423

I used this recipe and they turned out pretty darn good if I do say so myself.

 NewImage

Today has been one of ‘those’ days.  6 months ago it was one of ‘those’ days every day so I am happy that they only happen once every few weeks now.

My mom knew exactly how to get me out of the house.  She offered to take me for my favorite salad bar.

 DSC 9433

I put Brooke down for her nap and then I ate my 2 lb salad and watched The Mindy Project and just like that I was out of my funk.

NewImage

And now I feel as though Brooke and I should take advantage of the fresh new snow and go sledding or something!

See you in the morning friends!

What are your Thursday night plans?

Anyone else get some new slow recently?

How many days a week do you do some sort of cardio workout?

I don’t think there’s ever been a day where I do strength but not cardio, I’m more likely to take a total rest for sure.

Thursday night plans are sadly just a lot of prep work, I have a giant oral exam for my phd program tomorrow :(

Reply

Good luck tomorrow on your oral exam! You will do great Emmeline!

Reply

Thinking of you today. I know it must be awful! So glad you’re supported by family and friends. Every day will continue to get easier!!!

Reply

I’m so sorry you having “one of those days”. I’m having a pretty crappy day myself, but I think going home and seeing Annabelle will help. I just hope she isn’t in bed by the time I get home :(.

I hope you have a great night and a better tomorrow. :)

Reply

Sending you thought hugs and prayers. J you are amazing. You are going through a really hard time yet still manage to stay positive. You are such a light in a dark world! We need more people like you!

Reply

:( Hang in there girl, sending you a huge hug!

Reply

Hang in there girl! Keep doing what makes you happy! Those cookies would make me pretty happy right now ;)

It’s super weird to me to go a day, that’s not a rest day, without cardio. Fridays are usually my “no cardio” day. I take a Body Pump class and core strength class. Hope you have a great night!

Reply

I wish I could do more cardio! I try to aim for an even mix, but days when I don’t reallyyy want to run happen a little more often than I’d like.

Glad you’re feeling better – have a great rest of your day!!

Reply

Glad you’re over your funk day. It happens to the best of us, and has been happening to me more often than not due to the plague of unemployment. I always like the saying, “This too shall pass.” I try to remind myself of it when things get tough, whether it’s mile 25 of a marathon, or just a day when it feels like nothing can go right.

Thursday night plans are probably just dinner at home and Scrabble/Jeopardy (we play while we watch) with my husband. Nothing too exciting around here!

I lived in CA and AZ before moving to North Carolina last summer, so I got snow in my backyard for the FIRST TIME EVER yesterday! It was pretty exciting!!

I’m technically training for Boston, though I’m still injured, so I try to do cardio everyday to replace running! Swimming and pool running aren’t quite the same, but they’re better than nothing.

Reply

Those cookies look amazing! Wish I could have one…without all the baking ;)

Watching Big Bang Theory tonight. Always puts me in a good mood! Just like watching Modern Family. LOVE that show!

Reply

Sometimes I think some cookies & favorite shows can fix anything!

I am trying to fit in more cardio these days.. I have been running or rowing after crossfit every night.

Brooke is too cute even with her little hurt nose!

Reply

Going to a free CrossFit class.

We have sunshine today!

I usually do a daily cardio. Sometimes it’s only a 10-20 min warm-up. I was running 35+ miles every week, but I’ve cut back.

Reply

I’m all about the cardio too – but trying really really hard to sometimes work in some weights…gotta get strong! I’m in the midst of a challenge I made for myself to run every day for 30 days…but I’m already thinking of switching to a spinning day to rest my legs a bit.

I just got into New Girl – it’s hilarious!

Reply

Ohmygosh I LOVE NEW GIRL!

Reply

New Girl is the best! Schmidt is absolutely hilarious!

Reply

I do cardio (running) 6 times a week and do one day of cross training or just straight up rest.

Your cookies look amazing!

I hear we’re suppose to get 5-10 inches of snow tonight here in Denver…yay cleaning off my car to get to work will be my workout for the day…

Reply

Happy thoughts for you on a funky day. Sledding and cookies sound like an excellent combination.

Reply

Definitely a cardio junkie too… I feel very strange when I don’t get a run or spin or SOMETHING in! The guys at the gym make fun of the fact that my cardio to strength ratio is about 18:1 but oh well :)

Enjoy the gorgeous snow (and of course cookies and hot chocolate after;)

Reply

I’m having one of those days too :( a quote that helped me this morning – “some days your kite will fly high in the sky!! Other days it will get stuck in a tree.”

Cardio kickboxing class kicked me out of my funk today.. And I’ve been craving a ginormous salad bar! I live hin San Diego and would you believe there is NO giant salad bar to be had??? Scandal!!

Reply

Salad, cookies, cute babies… all great things to get someone out of a funk. Sending you hugs.

Reply

Healing maybe explains why u dont have “those days” more often. Keep it up girl! And way to go mom for taking u for your favorite salad.
I love that cookie recipe and when we use choc chips, white choc chips and butterscotch chips all at once, we call them calico cookies. (Cuz they r the same color as a calico cat…er..kinda :) ) I have some calico cookies on my counter right now that ive eaten way too many of.
Did I ever tell u that I make cookies with my kids every sunday? Its a good tradition. One more thing that makes sundays special.

Love Brooke’s brightly colored sweatshirt. So cute.

Oh and to answer your 1 of your questions; I do cardio 3 days a week (and strength training 3 days a week.)

Reply

Mew had quite the adventure here in Georgia ! With two snow days off work I took advantage and I cross trained like a beast ! Tootles, melissa

Reply

I’ve been trying to cut down on cardio and do it 4 days a week.. mostly running. It’s hard, though! haha I take one complete rest day, but the other days I usually do a circuit or just lift. That salad bar looks yummy :)

Reply

I didn’t feel like running yesterday either. I didn’t understand the feeling although I have come to recognize it as a sign of overtraining on the horizon. I am more of a cardio person than strength training but I have really been working on more weights and mixing things up a bit. Feels weird when I don’t run though!

Reply

I had one of those days today too. Even my morning run was blah. But I ran this afternoon, outside for the first time since we actually have temperatures above zero and now I’m funk free. Glad you shook you funk too!

Reply

Well yes, we did receive about 3-4 inches of new “slow” *is that what they call snow in Utah?* today!!

I shoveled. It was horrible. My shoulder/neck hurts now from lifting all that…my personal weight session right in my driveway! YUK! I always say I don’t want to be another family with a snowblower but I was wishing I had one today.

Reply

Ahhh Mindy. She is the best at curing any sort of sadness or blues! That snow is gorgeous, alllllmost makes me wish it snowed here! Almost ;)

Reply

My basketball game got cancelled due to the snow so now I have no plans… I’m so bored! I had one of those days too. Winter blahs :( I would go run but it’s a blizzard outside! Ugh winter!

Reply

I do my cardio at least 4 days a week.

Look forward to testing the cookie recipe!

Reply

Hey Janae…sorry to hear about your day :( You are so strong and such an inspiration. I am glad you have your loving family & supportive friends. Just take those days as they come and do whatever makes you feel good! You deserve it.

I am in Colorado so we are getting more snow tonight. Not loving it but vacation is just over a week away.

I try to get 4 runs in per week. The other days I sometimes do cardio (bike or swim) but for sure weights and then one complete rest day with nothing but maybe a nice bath.

Reply

3 days cardio, 3 days strength. Although the two will overlap in a workout from time to time.

Reply

Don’t you love when moms just know how to help you out of a funk?? Keep your chin up..there are so many of us out here who adore you and are inspired by you!
I got the same Utah snow as you! I wish our kiddos were friends…they’d have a blast together :)

Reply

I try to get cardio in two to three days a week, and the other two I’m at CrossFit so that varies, but is mostly strengthening. Today we did hand stand push-ups and pull-ups, which was great because it gave my legs a rest for my long run tomorrow. Tonight, just heading up to bed early. Have a great weekend!

Its okay to have a “down” day once in awhile. We all have them sometimes, its nice that your mom helped pull you out of it. Now you know the winning combo for future moods, salad bar & Mindy Project. :)

Reply

We’re supposed to be getting a ton of snow here in Denver! Fingers crossed my hubby gets home from London tonight AND that we get out Saturday for our (delayed) honeymoon!

Reply

I watched the three most recent Mindy Project episodes last night and I’m all caught up – DYING for a new episode!

Reply

Tonight I am just going to be chilling at home working on some writing stuff. I am in Provo and we got some snow today, but not as much is it looks like you got. Well when I am not pregnant I normally do cardio at least 5 days a week, but it has definitely been more like four while I have been pregnant.

Reply

I’m sorry you had one of those days, but I’m glad your mom helped cheer you up! That picture of Brooke in the snow is sooo cute!
I used to only do cardio, and then I got into strength traning dvds, but now I need to find a happy medium between the 2!

Reply

I love the mindy project…best show ever! Glad you are out of your funk:) and yes my jaw did drop when you said you didn’t feel like running today lol. Thursday night plans consist of studying, tv and institute at the church. I try and do 5 days a week cardio.

Just remember tomorrow is a new day!!! Oh and that silver vest is so stinkin’ cute. I love it!!!

I am glad you watched Mindy. If you hadn’t mentioned it I would have definitely recommended watching TMP to cheer you up. You should def re-watch the episode where Danny is going to be her gynecologist … seriously I laugh to tears every time!

“My warrior name is … Beyonce Pad Thai” :D

Today has been one of “those” days for me as well (but for different reasons)… SO tough to get through! I did run today, since it always helps with my mood, but it was a very tough run today…Your day sounds like a much better plan to life the spirits! Nothing better than baking cookies and eating a 2 (or 5) lb salad while watching TV. I usually do that every night…followed by a big bowl of popcorn and ice cream :) And then a little more ice cream before bed…

Reply

I am spending the evening with my true companion…my dog who went to the groomer today and smells so yummy and is so fluffy and soft.

We got a little snow a couple days ago. It freshened up the gray old snow.
I do 4 days of cardio a week.
It is always good to see the perspective and notice the progress. It’s ok to still have those days every few weeks. And in 6 more months I bet they will be even less frequent. Looks like you found some ways to pull yourself through today. :)

Reply

I try to get 5 or 6 cardio days a week. Tonight I am watching several episodes of Dexter on Netflix. I’m almost finished with season 7 and 8 is the last one. I can’t believe I never watched this show when it was on. I love Mindy Kaling! She is hilarious.

Seriously, the best cookies ever! Gotta try them!! http://2dinefor.com/2011/07/14/heavenly-chocolate-chip-cookies/

I am posting my new running shoes photo on FB. I know, such a geek. Waiting for Big Bang Theory and getting the kiddos through homework and finishing laundry. Very excited for the half school day tomorrow and the run in the new shoes. Still a little ice around here so no running at night right now. Could be ugly! Beautiful snow in Utah!

Having a bad day isn’t bad, as long as you climb out of it…and it sounds like you did.
Tonight I get my cardio in the form of basketball! I am no good at it, but it is fun. It is my form of speed work. :)

Reply

Love the Mindy Project!

I usually do cardio about 5 days a week (running).

Tonight we had a super exciting night…dinner out and then grocery shopping (ha!)

Reply

I’ve been doing more strength training than usual … I’m a little over running for the time being (we can go ahead and gasp at each other)

I’m glad your day got better, I love how you always find a way to stay positive HRG :)

Reply

Hopefully ‘those’ days are few and far between! Our Thursday night plans involved heading for dinner with friends at the Chinese buffet and now I’m relaxing on the couch watching The Taste!

Reply

I do cardio almost every day… with running I can’t stop myself!

Reply

Glad you got out of your funk!! Food and The Mindy Project would cure me too ;)

My plans tonight are polluting my mind with Vampire Diaries on netflix and sleeping on a blowup mattress in my now empty apartment… moving tomorrow!

Have a great rest of your night!

those cookies look amazing! Glad you are having a better day! : -)

We got some snow in Chicago. Not too much but it came with a lot of wind. I hear we are in store for a lot more this weekend.

Reply

Now I want a huge salad and some chocolate chip cookies! Maybe tomorrow…

I run about 4 days a week but usually get in 2 more cardio/toning combo workouts.

Thursday night plans consisted on eating popcorn and snuggling on the couch with my little girl and hubby. Now that they are in bed, I’m catching up on some shows and social media. :)

Reply

I used to have those kind of days, too. I promise there will be a day when you realize you can’t even think of when the last time you had one was! I’m glad you found some silver lining today! And now, I need to go check out this Mindy Project….I’ve never seen it! I loved her in The Office.

I just want to give you ten really big hugs. I can’t imagine what you’re going through. But I am so proud of you for being so great for you AND Brooke..you are hugely inspiring.

Hi Janae, I’ve never commented here before, but I just wanted to say that I started reading HRG about 6 months ago, and I think you are the most positive, enthusiastic person. I also think you’re a wonderful mom to your cute little girl :) Everything always looks brighter in the morning, so I hope tomorrow arrives with lot’s of good things in store for you and Brooke. Thanks for writing such a motivating, positive blog, God bless you and your family :)

Thank you so so so much for your sweet comment!

It is so beautiful there! I live in CA no snow where I live.
You are such a strong person in and out. We’ve all been there in one capacity or another….tomorrow is another day.

Reply

I’m like the total opposite–I’d rather have a lifting/weight training day than cardio. hah! I used to be a cardio junkie though. I get my cardio fix at least 2x week though–zumba and some running.

LOVING the snow too. It’s so pretty!

Reply

I worked until 7 and now I am sitting on the couch with my hubby trying to get tired and ready for bed! Almost the weekend! HUGS! Hope you feel better!

Reply

I try to do cardio 3-4 times a week. But really, my first love is yoga.

I love salads but I hate salad bars! Sad, isn’t it? It’s the sneeze guards. Just knowing sneeze guards are attempting to protect the food, but probably aren’t doing the best job, totally grosses me out. I stay away from buffets for that very reason as well. I know, I know, I need to get over my phobia. But I can’t. I prefer to not see where my food has come from and have it appear looking magnificent on the tray of a server. Totally illogical, I know.

But still, how do you get over the grossness of the sneeze guards at salad bars?

Reply

I take myself to the Whole Foods salad bar and watch the Mindy Project on bad days too. Morgan always cheers me up!

Reply

Big hugs to you! I hate having those days but sometimes they can help us take a step back and do something nice for ourselves ; )
My favorite salad bar is at Whole foods but I REFUSE to spend that much $$$ on a salad. BUT my local grocery store has a big salad bar for half the price per pound…LOVE IT.
My Thursday night plans were spent on a conference call for Ragnar ; )

Reply

I bet Brooke would love sledding!! I mean, then again, who doesn’t love sledding??

Yesterday, I ended up procrastinating my run so much that my Thursday night plans ended up being running on the treadmill while Mike did an Insanity workout next to me.

Reply

Funk days are the worst- I’m glad salad and the Mindy Proj cheered you up! (I’ve never seen that show, I should probably check a few episodes out because I’ve heard lots of people talking about it!) Good for you going to body pump, I probably would have just stayed in bed! haha

Reply

running’s great blah blah blah… WHAT DO YOU THINK OF MINDY AND DANNY TOGETHER!? I CAN’T WAIT TIL APRIL.

Reply

I know how ‘those’ days go. I actually wrote a post on wednesday about that–it would have been mine & Tyler’s two year anniversary and I was struggling big time. I know that’s nothing compared to going through a divorce but it still was quite emotional.
Seeing how strong you handle everything has served as inspiration to me. <3

Sweets always get me out of a funk, running does it as well. I usually end up kickboxing for cardio but the last 2 weeks have been about running and running only.

Reply

You got me craving a big ole salad now.

Which I guess isn’t a bad thing, now is it? :)

Reply

Thursday night was pretty low key but I was okay with that.
We have some fresh snow from yesterday but I would totally be good with some more white fluffy pretty!

I tend to do cardio at least four times a week. I rest on Tuesdays and Saturdays so that cuts out two days. And I like to chuck in a pump class now and then, I love them!

Thursday night plans normally consist of sleeping… I have triathlon swimming training in the morning which means a 5:00am start, then I do circuits afterwards so I’m exhausted at the end!

Reply

I’m oddly jealous of all the snow you guys get out there … I’m trying to convince my husband to find a job out that way but no dice…not yet anyway! We’re lucky to get a couple of inches a few times a year in VA. Boo!

Reply

The Mindy Project always makes me feel better too!

Reply

I try to do 3 days of cardio, and 3 days of strength/circuit training. Doesn’t always happen though :)

Reply

a giant 2 lb salad and fresh baked cookies would put me in a good mood, too. :) sending you lots of hugs! xo

I hope you’re feeling better. I can relate to having “one of those days.” Sometimes you just need to check-out from life and give yourself a break to recharge. I go shopping or my favorite restaurant on those days.

No snow around my house, just lots of rain! Heard an older song by Kelly Clarkson yesterday that always makes me feel better and thought I would share it with you. It’s called ‘The Sun Will Rise’ from her Stronger Album. :-)

Hi!

I’ve been following your blog for a while now, but it’s been a while since I’ve commented! I found your blog while living in Seoul, S. Korea and it was such a delight to read while living in a country where I had a hard time commenting with people :)

I actually started reading your blog after deciding that I wanted to train for a marathon! I got very sick in the meantime, which took a toll on my body — I’m still recovering, but am able to run again. Yay! These days I’m definitely having to listen to my body and take breaks between cardio sessions. Otherwise I’m fatigued for days.

My question is: do you have any training programs that you recommend? Or associations through which to go through to find a running coach? I’m still wanting to reach my goal of running of marathon, but want to do it in a way that supports my body — especially in light of what it’s been through the past two years.

Thank you! Happy to re-connect with your blog :)
