4 things that got me through my treadmill run.

PS don’t forget to watch our video from cruising around SF.

The 4 things that got me through 10 miles on the treadmill:

1.  I had no other option, we were staying in downtown Oakland and for some reason my mom didn’t feel comfortable with me running around there at 5 something in the morning by myself.

2.  ‘We Bought A Zoo’ was on and I had never seen it before, it kept me kind of entertained.

3.  My sister was on the elliptical next to me for the majority of it and we turned the ac on full blast.

4.  I had enough more than enough glycogen in my blood stream from the x amount (I’m not going to tell you what x equals in this equation) of apple fritters that I ate over the weekend.

Brooke has become quite the little traveler.  I can’t even count how many plane rides she has been on in her 17.3 months of life.  She is really into apples lately.  Another fun fact, Brooke’s elbows are extremely ticklish.  I learned that yesterday.

 IMG 7081

4.5 hour plane delays aren’t the most fun thing with a 1.5 year old but luckily she fell asleep for a little while in the hammock that we created for her.

IMG 7105

Subway to the rescue (we thought we would be home for lunch but no…) because I refuse to spend $15 on all of the other meal options that they offer at the airport.

IMG 7106

Once we finally did get home I had the best package waiting for me.  The Skinny Runner sent me her Garmin 405.  It is a collector’s item in my opinion and it is still in perfect condition. My Garmin is pretty much done and so this was perfect timing.  There were also some swedish fish in the package.  She is a good good woman.

ahhhh I just did my first 20 miler for Boston on the treadmill this past Sunday (snow/ice on the roads)… I have done 16,17,18 and now 20 on the ‘mill- all due to either my location/weather/or an injury that I was worried would need immediate attention. I require amazing movies and television to do this- I spent Sunday finishing up the first season of Homeland- highly recommend!

Swedish fish. Yes, please :) or Sour patch kids. Or any other fruity gummy yummy thing. Breakfast dessert anyone?

Longest treadmill, about 3 miles.
Chocolate bar right now at 8am. ;)
And longest delay was 8 hours on my way to Italy. I already get really anxious and excited when going to Italy because I can’t wait to see my family, add a delay and I’m no ones best friend.

Reply

12 miles is my longest on the TM and I have done it a few times. I down right like a long run on the TM, with a good show, my snacks and water right there………now I wish it were long run day. :)

Longest plane delay was 8 hours. That was semi brutal.

Reply

Chocolate bar!!! I have a 405 and I love it… But I can’t get it to stop auto pausing right now. Hmm, I think 10 was my max and it was rough.

Reply

That’s so sweet of her to send you a Garmin! What a nice gift! My 305 is still hanging on…no issues yet and it’s three or four years old. But I rarely use it, which I am sure increases longevity. I use the stopwatch function for track and the GPS side for my long runs, so I can keep track of distance. I used to use it more for that purpose, but I am so used to the routes in my area that I just don’t need it that much anymore.
Chocolate bar always wins, BTW…

Longest treadmill run was 9 or 10 miles, I usually try to avoid for anything over 6 or 7 but there were floods and it couldn’t be helped. I don’t mind the treadmill though, it’s just better to train on the surface I’ll be racing on :)

Longest delay was a whole day and a half. We were in Vegas in December a few years ago which was pleasant, but a snowstorm hit and the whole eastern half of the US was closed down. They flew us to Miami (?!) rather than leave us in Vegas so we had to sleep in the Miami airport and wait 12 more hours to take our flight home to VA.

Reply

10 miles on a treadmill wouldn’t rough. I think the longest I’ve done on one is 8 miles and I was forced to because of an ice storm. My mom is the same way though and doesn’t like me running when it’s dark. Having your sister there would make it better though! Right this second at 8am I’d choose Swedish fish. No question. She is a good friend ;)

The longest run I’ve ever done on the treadmill is 13 miles. I’ve spent a couple hours on ellipticals before when maintaining fitness during college injury. I personally find the elliptical much easier because you can sit online or blogs…ha if we are honest.

Trashy tv, good music and Internet keeps me sane…though coming from swim team where you spend 2 hours staring at the bottom of the pool anything seems more exciting.

Stay warm over there!

Longest run on a treadmill for me I think was 8 miles (which was almost my longest run ever) but I had to stop a million times to walk. I would choose swedish fish right now, I may have overdosed on chocolate this weekend. Ooops.

I’ve been wanting to see We Bought a Zoo, is it good? I listened to the audiobook for a while when I was running last year, but then I got bored and quit.

Reply

Glad you made it home safely! I’ve ran about 16 miles on the treadmill. Good movies are a must! Chocolate always wins out!

Reply

Longest treadmill run was 10 miles but I am determined to get to 15 miles. Boredom definitely sets in before exhaustion…need a good show(s) or movie.
Sweedish fish all the way or any sort of gummy.

Have an a awesome Tuesday Janae!!

Yay to getting home safe and sound.
Brooke is quite the jet setter :)

Longest run on treadmill was 8 miles and it was brutal. It’s too long of a distance for an indoor run.

That’s awesome skinny runner sent you her watch. :) yay for runner friends they are the best.

Reply

I once ran 20 miles on a treadmill just to see if I could do it. I also did an 18 mile training run during a snow storm on one last year. Bad lifetime Christmas movies got me through that one.

I’d totally pick Swedish fish.

I had a 6 hour plane delay once, but it ended up being awesome because I was switched to a direct flight and got home at the same time I would have on my original flight.

Reply

Longest TM run : 10 miles. Thank you, Downton Abby

Sorry, can’t choose – it has to be both

One time, my husband and I waited from midnight to 7am in a seedy diner/parking lot in rental car for the airport to open so we could fly home to Seattle. There is officially nothing to do at the Newark airport.

Reply

We flew to Brazil (with Noah) in November overnight and it was ROUGH haha. I think it was only 8 hours but that was enough with him! Glad Brooke does so well! Her outfit is super cute, love the denim with the leggings!

Watching Movies is the only way I can run on a treadmill these days. It’s awesome that Skinnyrunner sent you her watch, now that’s what I call a friend.
My longest run on a treadmill has been 18miles. I would have a chocolate bar over Swedish fish right now, Swedish fish and coffee don’t go well :). Longest plane ride was 4hrs.

Reply

Chocolate. Always chocolate. Longest run on the treadmill has been I think 12 or 13 miles. I haven’t been hating it as much as I usually do these days. Just ran 6 miles on it and felt great.

Reply

I once was heading home for a long weekend and I was stuck in Detroit. I knew the plan was delayed a few hours but after waiting longer than expected they canceled the flight and I was stuck in Detroit overnight. So much fun…

Glad you are on your way home! have a safe trip!

Reply

I’ve done 8 miles and that’s probably my limit. Chocolate bar!!!

Reply

I’ve done 11 on the treadmill when I was training for my first half two years ago and I was too nervous to run in the sons here in Chicago! And Swedish Fish, of course.

Reply

4 miles is basically my max on the mill… It definitely helps to have something on TV though. And right now, at 640 AM, I’d have to go with chocolate. The little bit of caffeine is kind of needed today…

Reply

Swedish fish for sure!!!!

I had the 405 (the green one) until my mom got me the 620 for Christmas. You will love it!!!

Reply

Longest tm run was a few weeks ago when they cancelled my marathon because of an Ice storm. I was all ready and carb loaded so I did 22 indoors.

Longest llabe delay was 6 hours stuck on the runway in Italy. Nope, actually trying to get out of Boston last year the day after the marathon. American had a computer shutdown nation wide and we were delayed 14 hours..I may have foam rolled in the terminal :)

Enjoy all of your time with that little girl today!

Yeah Oakland just isn’t the best place to go running at 5 am hahaha. Longest run I’ve ran on a treadmill was 15 miles. I don’t know if I could ever do that again!! I would be pick chocolate bar! Chocolate just always wins, I have no control around it hahaha.

Reply

I have the 405, too. I got it used on ebay for $70, and it’s still going strong a year later! I don’t think I’ve ever done more than 12-ish miles on the treadmill. I don’t mind it, and I don’t get bored if I have a TV show or movie to watch, but I don’t have my own treadmill so I hardly ever use one.

Reply

17 is the longest on a treadmill. Not fun!

Reply

I’ve probably only done 3-4 miles on a treadmill… I can’t take any longer than that! And hmmm I’d probably go with sweedish fish right now. Seeing them in your pic makes me crave them! :)

Reply

6miles is my longest TM run. TV is the only thing that saves me. I loveddddd we bought a zoo! I thought it was such a sweet movie.

Reply

I think the longest I’ve done is 5 miles on the treadmill and that was pushing it. I may have to suck it up and do more within the next couple months though since I’m training for a half in March, and it’s COLD outside. Eeeek.

Chocolate bar all the way. You’re going to wonder what in the world is wrong with me, but I don’t like Swedish Fish. I know, I know.

Reply

11 miles :-/. Never again! Treadmill running does build mental stamina though. I save my running magazines for use only on the treadmill as incentive! Also, I’d choose a crunch bar, which I have a bag of in the kitchen :-D

Reply

I love watching movies while I run! It makes the time go by sooooo much faster because my brain stops thinking about how much more I have to go ;) I ran 12 miles on the treadmill once, and I don’t even know how I did that!

Longest run on the dreadmill was 20 miles :( We were going out of town so I had to do an early morning run and a woman near us was assaulted the day before so the hubs said treadmill or no run. I talked to my BFF on the phone for about 1/4 of the run, it helped tremendously.
Swedish Fish!
Longest delay was a few summers ago when they turned our plane around about an hour into the flight because something was wrong with the plane (talk about freaking me out) & we were indefinitely grounded. We got on a flight several hours later and finally made it home. That business was crazy!

Reply

14 miles is my max on the treadmill — i thought i would die!

Reply

Yay for a new Garmin! The longest run I have ever done on the dreadmill is 2.5 miles – I can’t stand it! And We Bought a Zoo is an amazing movie :)

Reply

My 405 is still working great. The new ones are more stylish but why spend the $. Longest run on TM – 20 miles. Yikes. Boring. It’s a toss up on the chocolate or swedish fish – would depend on my horomonal load :-)

what a nice friend you have to send you a garmin!!! :) When I ruined my IPOD, my nice friend gave me one of her old ones…I was soooo gratefuL!! :)

I did a 20 this weekend on the ‘mill. “What Alice Forgot” kept me entertained….Thanks for the reccomendation…I love it and finished it yesterday! LOVED the ending!!! :)

Swedish FISH!!! LOVE THEM!!!!!!!

A long time ago I ran 11-12 miles on a treadmill. I don’t think I could do that now!
I would always choose chocolate:)
I feel like I am ALWAYS delayed when traveling….I was once delayed in the Portland Maine airport for 8 hours. I have also had flights cancelled or flight delays that caused me to miss connecting flights. My family thinks I am bad luck to travel with!

Reply

Lake Merritt is a half mile from your door. It is lit and safe, I run there every morning!

Reply

We always fly out of Oakland and so next time I am there can we please do an early morning run together?

Reply

There are tons of places to run starting in downtown Oakland! I live there, so I should know. I ran the Oakland Marathon last year… Check out their course map. For a real challenge, head up Piedmont or Grand Ave into the Okaland Hills! That will definitely get the heart pumping at 5am.

Reply

Chocolate bar, hands down. I bought my BF a Dove Cookies N’ Cream one yesterday…..it looks AWESOME.

I used to run double digits on the treadmill. Can’t do it anymore. I’d max out at an hour.

Reply

I have done 22 miles on the treadmill. I had to get my miles in before my kids soccer games! Netflix and a DVR are a must! Too many miles on the treadmill this winter! I had to a 10 mile tempo run this morning on it. Now to enjoy a snow day with my family!!!

Reply

12 miles on treadmill.
I would pick Swedish fish, but I just started a cleanse. No candy for 10 days!
The only really bad thing that has happened to me flying. Is when my baby and I got air sick at the same time. A lady on the flight sprayed me with her Perfume and gave me some breath mints. In the SLC airport .

Reply

6.5 miles was my limit. The weight room I use doesn’t have a t.v. Just a bunch of high school kids listening to music insanely loud. But I don’t have to pay a membership and the treadmill is nice so I can’t complain too much. I will be ready for some above freezing temps to get outside runs in. It was 36 degrees out the other day when I did 10miles and it was GLORIOUS!

So nice of skinnyrunner. I have a love/hate relationship with my little Garmin forerunner 10. It has a hard time finding location.

Reply

My longest run on a treadmill is 10 miles I think. I did it at a gym and it was oddly entertaining to see several people start and finish their workouts while I was still running. I’m a little slow haha. Oh yeah… swedish fish all the way.

Reply

Oh my gosh yes! I do 10 miles at my college gym pretty regularly and I always love watching the people come and go, it certainly passes the time!

Reply

23 miles on the treadmill once, preparing for Running Fit’s ‘Trail Marathon’ in Michigan.

(don’t judge me)

Reply

Swedish fish for sure!! gummy > chocolate any day!

Reply

I’d take a chocolate bar. Right now :)

Longest TM run to date is 10 miles. I might have to tackle 12 this weekend, depends on the lovely weather. We’ve been having wind gusts up to 60 MPH and steady at around 35 MPH, and I’m just not that dedicated to outdoor running to fight that kind of wind! I don’t mind longer runs on the treadmill, I usually put in a movie or a TV series on DVD that I wouldn’t normally just sit and watch, so it’s kind of fun.

Reply

My longest treadmill run was 15 miles a year ago……just because I wanted to see if I could do it. Lol.

Sorry I don’t care for Swedish fish! But I would take chocolate any time in any form.

Little Brooke has probably flown more in her life than I have! Haha. I don’t think I’ve ever had a long delay, maybe an hour tops.

Are you running the SF marathon, Janae?

Reply

I am going to have to do a 7 mile run on the treadmill on Saturday – that will be my longest. And chocolate bar, hands down!

Reply

longest run probably 8 miles! i hate how the treadmills at my gym turn off after an hour, so they restart.

chocolate bar all the way!

6 hours but it was in the portland airport, which is awesome and i love to people watch, so it wasn’t that bad!

Reply

Once, I did about 8 miles on a treadmill and that is by far my max – usually I can’t do more than 5! And I would choose a chocolate bar…I will always choose chocolate over candy ;-)

Reply

The longest plane delay I’ve ever had was only about 2 hours or so – I’ve been lucky!

We have the same Garmin now – yay! It is still a bit bulky but it does the job!

Swedish fish!

Reply

I have done a 20 miler. That was pretty much the worse thing ever. I have done 15,16, 17, 18 as well, pretty brutal!
I have to go with a chocolate bar right now!
Longest plane delay was 8 hours. It was awful!

Reply

My longest treadmill run in 17 miles. Last weekend I did 14 on the treadmill because it was too slippery outside and it’s looking like I’ll be on the treadmill all week with the cold blast we are getting.

Reply

Swedish Fish all the way! Hate chocolate… weird, I know. Ohh so many delays I can’t even remember the worst one… that’s what happens when you live in NYC and there are delays every time you fly.

Reply

I think the farthest I’ve gone on the treadmill is 8.5 miles. Thankfully I have one at home, so I can crank up the tunes and take potty breaks as needed without worrying someone will take my machine! :)

LOVE Swedish Fish… Miss Skinny Runner! :(

I think the longest delay I’ve had was maybe 2-3 hours. It wasn’t super long compared to what many people experience.

Reply

Longest flight delay… 20 hours. Ha. They cancelled out flight to Hawaii and we had to get on a flight the following morning. The worst way to start out your vacation. I would definitely chose a chocolate bar right now.

Reply

Longest treadmill run = 11 miles and it was surprisingly not bad at all. I think the key is just to make sure you have some distractions. I’m a sports fan so as long as I can watch a football or basketball game I’m interested in, I’ll good to go ;)

I have never had an Apple Fritter – I always imagined they would be too apple-y for a donut haha. I like my donuts to not contain anything healthy like fruit in them! haha

Reply

I think 10 miles is the longest I’ve done on a treadmill. It automatically shut off after an hour and I had to start a new “workout” on it.
Hmmm that’s really really hard. I love both chocolate and swedish fish!!!

The only danger to running in Oakland at 5 in the morning is that it’s still dark this time of year, and you might get hit by a sleepy driver who doesn’t see you in the dark!

Reply

I muscled through 5 on a treadmill recently and though I was going to melt from boredom, congrats on making it through 10 thats amazing!

Reply

6 miles is my longest on the treadmill. It’s tolerable if there’s something good to watch on tv.

Never had a flight delay of over a couple hrs. I bet that was a loooong wait in the airport with a toddler!

No way would EVER choose any candy over a chocolate bar! Don’t even have to think about that one!:)

Reply

Ugh, long flight delays are no fun. Good thing there was Subway to get you through! The longest flight delay I’ve ever had was like 13 or 14 hours. I had to stay overnight in a hotel in Zurich all by myself until I could get a flight out the next day. At least it makes for a funny story now!

Reply

I can only last an hour on the treadmill before going crazy! That is about 7 miles for me. I don’t know how you did 10. Way to go!

I would always choose the chocolate bar…I can’t turn down chocolate! :)

My longest delay is about 6 hours (2 of which were on the plane waiting to leave). It was terrible and they lost our luggage on top of it.

Reply

Woo hoo! I’ll be running the SFM as the 2:00 pacer (1st half). Then I’ll go back to the finish and run the course backwards, snapping pictures of all the pacers from my running group :). I did that last year and it was a blast.
Also, that’s super awesome of SF to send you her Garmin! Blogger friends are so awesome!

Longest treadmill run- I’ve done a few 20 milers. I don’t hate the treadmill if I have things to keep me entertained.

Delays…. I NEVER got delayed until I met my husband. Once I started dating him and we began traveling together delays are now an expectation for us EVERY time.

My longest run on a treadmill is 8 miles. I don’t own one or a gym membership.
Swedish Fish!
My longest delay/cancellation was 2 days after MCM 2012 due to Hurricane Sandy.

The longest treadmill run I’ve done is ten miles… I had 9 miles on schedule for today so I did 3 this morning before the snow hits and plan to go back to the treadmill after work to finish the rest. Do you ever split up your runs?

Delays as differentiated from layovers or sudden cancelations…probably 8-ish hours. We used to travel with our kids a lot, so a delay is a bit more stressful. Being in that limbo with an infant and a toddler gives it quite a different flavor! Worst layover was 20 hours in Rome as the lone adult with three kids ages 6, 4, and 1. Schlepping 2 boosters, a car seat, a portacrib, three weeks worth of toys/books/clothes for 3 kids, a diaper bag, snacks and sippy cups…from the airport to the hotel (walking cuz I foolishly thought it was close) and back again less than a day later to get on a 10-hr flight home… We can do hard things :)

Oakland is SO CLOSE. Next time!

Longest plane ride was 23 hours to Asia!!! I would rather have a chocolate bar right now! I won’t do any more than 6 miles on a treadmill!

Longest run on the treadmill was 14 miles to kick off 2014! Movies and TV are huge for getting me through some monotonous treadmill miles :) Glad you had a great trip with your family!

Chocolate bar. I’ve never been a huge fan of fruity or chewy candies (except caramels!). And movies are the only thing that get me thru long runs on the treadmill. I think I’ve done around 8-10 miles max on my treadmill.

Reply

Longest treadmill run I’ve ever done is 3 miles. I’m a wimp…ad can’t last any longer than that on the ‘mill. I would choose a chocolate bar. I love chocolate. Longest plane delay I’ve ever had is 12 hours. UGH!

You know you’re probably safer at 5 a.m. than 5 p.m. in most places – the crooks and creeps are asleep! At least that’s what I tell myself when I’m running in the dark early morning.

Longest treadmill run – maybe 5 miles?

Chocolate bar! No brainer for me, ever. Always chocolate.

We were delayed about 5 hours in Barcelona once, which made us miss our connection in NYC, finally getting home to Los Angeles about 28 hours later.

Longest treadmill is 7 miles back in college. Now I avoid it and will run outside in almost any weather!

Chocolate bar!!

I was flying from Montana to Vermont with a layover in Chicago. After a 2 hour delay (1 on the plane) with my 14 month old (by myself) I ended up in a hotel over night and was one of the lucky ones who got out at 11 am the next day… all in all about 15 + hours. People were so nice though (we were all headed to Vt- we are nice people). I was by my self since my husband stayed in MT for a conference. The worst part was I had 1 (yes ONE) diaper left and had to go find some at an interesting convenience store!

swedish fish!!

I used them once as fuel on a long run….but I kinda just stuck a handful in each of my pockets. My pockets are still red…. :/

Chocolate bar! but only if it’s dark chocolate.

Long flight delay was only 2 hours – I’ve been very lucky when it comes to flying…I usually end up with an empty seat between myself and the next person over too!

Longest on a treadmill was 90 minutes – however many miles that actually was haha

As stupid as it may sound, the fact that the TV was open may have saved you! I see too many people on their treadmill without any music, podcast or movie. It’s a lot easier to forget the pain when you are entertained by something else! I personally never run on a Treadmill without my iPod.

By the way, thanks for the article Janae. Really fun!

Ugh, Christmas travel is the worst – I was flying on the 22nd of December, landed for my layover in Toronto all right, but then I found out that my final flight to my home town (about a 45 minute flight from Toronto) was delayed for four hours. Waited for about 2 and a 1/2 hours, and was then told that the flight had been completely cancelled. Air Canada was going to put everyone into hotels for the night (there had been a huge ice storm in Toronto this year), so I waited in line for literally six hours to get a hotel (which ended up being a 45 minute drive from the airport). Finally got to my hotel after midnight (and being up since 3 AM to start travelling). Then they didn’t even re-book me onto another flight until 11:30 PM on the 24th/25th, which meant I had to wait two full days for my next flight (and not being home for Christmas eve)! Luckily my parents drove the four hours to come and get me the next day and bring me home so I made it home in time for Christmas. It was a horribly long layover, I felt terrible for other’s around me who were waiting for even longer than I had, but was very thankful that I was still given a hotel to sleep in and not the airport.

…And I apologize for the story I just wrote to you about layovers, but I guess it shows that things could always be worse? ;)
Hope you’re having a great day!

I spent 12 hours in the London Heathrow airport one time, with my friend. We were flying standby, too, so that just comes with the territory. We switched off taking naps, it was quite exhausting, but now looking back it was pretty fun too :) Not at the time though! Ha!

I think Brooke just might have stumbled upon the best idea for airport lounges. Wouldn’t it be great to have adult sized hammocks, especially when there are major delays due to snow storms and you end up spending the night at the airport?

I had a couple of 18 milers and a 2o on the treadmill when I was training for Boston in 2010 during a particularly snowy winter for us. I watched TV, otherwise, I would have gone nuts!

I don’t like Swedish fish (am I still allowed to read your blog?), so I’d definitely pick chocolate. Make that dark, please!

The worst delay I have ever had was 19.5 hours. It. Was. Awful.

Swedish fish, almost always. Every once in a while I want chocolate, but rarely over gummy anything.

I had the 405 and loved it!!! I lost it at a race last year. I cried, and then upgraded to the 610. It’s like iPhones. I’ve had it less than a year, and it’s already outdated.

Longest treadmill run would be about 8 miles, I think.

Swedish fish, pretty much always.

Longest flight delay (not counting cancelled flights) was around 12 hours.

The longest delay I’ve had to deal with was in Salt Lake City. My mom and I went to Park City for Christmas and we got snowed in for a couple hours. The people watching was really fun though and we parked it right next to a window to watch the luggage get loaded. I am already registered for the SF Marathon! I am so excited!! :D

The longest treadmill run I have ever completed was 10 miles. I watched Ever After while running.

Right now I would choose some swedish fish!

My plane has never been delayed. (haven’t traveled by air that much) but I hope it never gets delayed!

Aw man, I would have run with you! I’m just a couple of miles from downtown Oakland. I wouldn’t run alone at 5:00 AM, but with two, it’s safe enough :)

My longest treadmill run was 24 miles. I don’t know how I did it… But it was really icy and dangerous outside that whole week, and I had to get in my last long run before one of my early spring races. :) I love fueling with Swedish fish, but I’d pick a chocolate bar right now :)
I was stuck in SLC last month overnight when the airport closed from all the snow. It was awful… Normally, I’d just rent a car and explore, and walk around. This time, there was that 8″ or so of new snow, and I’m in a walking boot. I was lonely! At least I got some work done (I was out in Idaho for work, I’m a photographer) and I was able to fly standby home the next day. :)

Good job on your 10! I did 6 on the dreadmill today and felt like a rockstar. What got me through? Watching a youtube video concert of Kid Rock at Sturgis in 2013.

I want to be friends with other bloggers who will send me cool packages!

I also find running on a treadmill quite boring. I usually do it if the weather condition is bad and I usually don’t last very long. Anyway, I get through it by listening to music or just plain grit my teeth and get it over with!
