When my mom and I are together this kind of stuff happens all of the time.  We both really like donuts.

DSC 8145

After church we were on our way to get some lunch and when we passed by Yum Yum we knew we had to stop to get some donuts for later on when we were with Brooke at our hotel.

We randomly chose a pizza restaurant in Willow Glen and it was a good decision.  The bread that they brought out to each table was homemade whole wheat and it was perfect.  I am going to get back into making THIS bread again because I love homemade bread.

And the absolute best food that we had at a restaurant while in California:

A garlic chicken pizza.

And then I was reunited with the Brookers.  I feel whole again.

Brooke was giving that little boy the stink eye for stealing her train.

Turns out Brooke is good at giving the stink eye lately…

My aunt and uncle prepared an amazing meal for us before we left to stay the night in Oakland.  The fish was perfect and the fruit was from a farmers market so it was extra good.

Yayyy for such a sweet reunion!! I’m happy for you :)

This morning I ran an interval workout on the treadmill. I had to convince myself that the feeling of burning lungs is enjoyable haha. I finished off with the stair climber and the rower, and then had to go to work.

I have never made homemade bread but would love to try it out! Do you need a bread maker or can you use a regular oven?

I pretty much love any donut haha… and the last place I flew to was Bahir Dar, a city in northern Ethiopia (where I am currently living)!

Have a great day – I’m sure it would be hard not to now that you and Brooke are together again!!

I love Brooke’s stink eye! I have to laugh when I see my students give each other the stink eye! I know they probably want to say something nasty, but they are trying to abide the saying “If you don’t have anything nice to say…” hehe! It’s okay, one can say so much with just their eyes!

Safe travels back to Utah!

I’ve never made homemade bread. I tried to make my grandmother’s biscuits once but they came out like hockey pucks.

I’m on week 2 of my intermediate half-marathon training plan, so a few short runs and a 5 mile run on Saturday. Going to the gym to do weights today.

Love Boston Creme donuts!

I flew to Phoenix last week for Thanksgiving.

Have a great week!

So happy you are reunited with Brooke!
Planning on running 4 miles on the treadmill while watching the Today Show.
Fav donut anything chocolate or cream filled

Haven’t flown since July 2012. I prefer to drive if possible so I can over pack!

Reply

Yay! So glad you and little Brookers are reunited again! I’m sure you’re on cloud nine!

I don’t make the bread with yeast that you have to let rise and all that… They intimidate me. I’m all about “quick breads” though – you know, banana bread, pumpkin bread, zucchini bread, etc. :)

Today I’m planning on doing a random assortment of cardio at the gym – I don’t really have a plan – just something to get those endorphins going. The rest of the week will consist of a run or two, and then a couple Power Pump Classes.

Favorite donut is a chocolate glazed Krispy Kreme or a Boston cream.

Aaaand I adore your leggings! You’re the cutest.

Reply

I practice the “love the one you’re with” philosophy with donuts. It’s served me well.

Reply

Hahahah best philosophy ever!

Reply

So glad you and Brooke are back together again!

Favorite donut = Boston cream and red velvet.

Monday is bread making day in our home. Our kitchen and dining room have a large wall of windows, so the sun shines in and warms the area just right for helping the bread to rise.

Since we’re still in VA, I’m skipping bread making today, but next Monday… bread making Monday is back!

This week will be a lot of yoga and core as we’ll be away from home for most of the week.

One more day in VA and then we head back to WA. Praying for another successful flight back home with our little girl.

Your eyelashes in that last photo!!! To die for! :)

Love Brooke’s stank eye, lol.

Reply

I’m so happy for you janae! Let’s hope Brooke doesn’t give you the stink eye ;) my dad makes the best homemade bread- I don’t even know what it is except that it has a whole bunch of herbs in it and I finish an entire loaf in one day. So good. Enjoy your reunion with Brooke to the fullest :)

I have made bread in the past but not for over a year. I do love my bread maker, the smell of fresh bread is the best!
No workouts yet, still in recovery from my csection.
I love a Boston Cream donut but not with the whipped cream type filling.
Last place we flew to was Arizona and it is where we will fly next :)

I found the BEST recipe for challah bread! This recipe taught me not to fear bread making – I’ve never had it fail! It’s PERFECT around the holidays.

Ingredients
1 envelope instant yeast
3¾ cups bread flour
2 large eggs plus one for glazing
¾ cup warm water (about 100 degrees)
½ cup vegetable oil
1½ teaspoons salt
¼ cup sugar

Instructions
Prepare the yeast by mixing the yeast with ¾ cup of flour and warm water and whisk until smooth.
Let yeast stand until it puffs up, about 10 minutes.
Whisk in the two eggs, oil, salt and sugar into yeast mixture until incorporated.
Then add the remaining 3 cups of flour and mix into a ball. Knead until smooth, about 5-10 minutes.
Place the dough in a warm, cleaned bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Let the dough ferment until it has doubled in size, about two hours.
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and divide your dough into two pieces.
For a three strand braid divide one of the pieces of dough into three more pieces and roll each one out into a flat piece.
Starting with the small end, roll each piece up into a strand. Braid that sucker up starting in the middle.
Repeat with the other piece of dough.
Cover the loafs with plastic wrap and let proof until tripled in size, about 1.5 hours.
Glaze the breads with the last egg and bake for 35 minutes at 350 degrees.

Those mini sprinkle donuts look awesome! My favorite donuts are double chocolate- the chocolate cake donuts + chocolate frosting. Recently though I had a HUGE longjohn donut with maple frosting and a slice of bacon on top and my life was changed.

Reply

I am not a bread lover but do love love love Ezekiel Cinnamon Raisin bread…as for donuts, I always loved Dunkin’s Chocolate Crème Filled and over the years because partial to a boston crème. There is a great donut spot in Brooklyn (Peter Pan bakery) that makes ridiculous munchkins and donuts. Anything from there is a delish.

LOVE your dress in the first photo! Please share where you got it?!

Good Morning :) So happy to see Brook safe and sound in your loving arms:)

Here are two awesome and easy-ish bread recipes, they are not mine so credit goes to the recipe makers: http://tastykitchen.com/recipes/breads/jalapeno-cheese-bread/
and http://www.ourbestbites.com/2012/01/multigrain-bread/ I am also a fellow homemade bread lover. I suggest getting a bread machine, it opens a whole new world to you.

Donuts? As a matter of fact we are eating my favorite donut ~ chocolate covered donut over white cake, from WaWa and it’s delish. With a side of Starbucks dark roast its like out of this world.

Last plane ride was to go to Bothell, Washington ( a suburb outside of Seattle). My Mom fell and hurt herself badly :( She is doing to much better now and proves just how wonderfully tough she is! I live in Maryland so the flights were looooonnnnngggg and tough but I would do it all over again.

Exercise plan this week? Just to do something I have been a slacker in a big way.

Hope you all have a safe and happy flight home!

I started yesterday (kicking off December right) prepping for my 1/2 Ironman training that will REALLY start in January. I need to add in some cycling, yoga, and swimming this week to all my beloved running. Time to get serious.

Reply

That must be so hard being away from Brooke! I give you kudos for not curling up into a ball and crying for hours.

I have no workouts planned for the week as I have a horrible chest cold and finals and we are moving. Three of my least favorite things.

And I LOVE donuts – my favorite are chocolate glazed. I get it every single time. So yummy!

Reply

So glad you are reunited!
My mother in-law makes bread all the time and it always smells so good! (I can’t eat because I am GF!)
This week I have a lot of running, yoga, kenpo and strength workouts.
Last time I was on a plane I was flying to Florida!

Reply

So happy you have Brooke again! My favorite donut is either the chocolate cake one with chocolate frosting or the chocolate cream filled. I’m also not above the super cheap donut sticks that cost less that $1… The last place we flew on a plane to was Brazil!

Reply

For this week I am going to the gym to workout I’ve got my own personal fitness schedule made for me by a fitness instructor. So that my muscles will be stronger for running.

Reply

Yay for getting Brooke back ;)
We r currently in the middle of a snow storm. 20-30cms of snow today :(. So I will not be running or driving today. Stationary bike and yoga planned for tonight.

Those donuts look so cute! I want one :)

Reply

I love the book/donut tradition, adorable!
I make banana bread whenever our bananas start to look sad.
I have a 20K trail race this weekend, so just getting ready for that.
I love maple buttermilk donuts.
Last place I flew to was TX to see my BFF.

Reply

Omg her stink eye is too funny! And I love Willow St Pizza!!

Favorite donut is a maple glazed old fashioned.

I don’t fly very often….with 3 kids it’s too expensive. Last place was when I was pregnant with my second I flew to Southern California to visit a friend. That was about 7 years ago!!!!

I suck at making homemade bread, so I can’t help you there.

Reply

You made it!!! I bet that was a looong weekend but you got through it and kept busy. Seriously, great work.

Favorite donut is powdered sugar.

Last place I flew was home from a work trip in London.

I like the Soft Millet Sandwich Bread from this book: http://www.amazon.com/Gluten-Free-Vegan-Bread-Artisanal-Recipes/dp/1570617805

I love donuts too.. I only crave & eat them about 2x a year, so when we are reunited it’s magical!

This makes my heart so happy! I am so happy you got your nugget back!
I want to run my little butt off this week and try to hit 5 days a week with one or two spin classes. I almost hit 70 miles last month so I have to exceed that number this month.
I flew with my one year old from South Florida to Georgia…all I can say is traveling with a baby is not so fun.
Hope you have a safe trip home!

APPLE FRITTERZZZZZZZZ!

I’ll definitely be doing my rigorous PT workout with the tiger, but other than that I’m not sure.

Reply

I looooooove your dress in that first picture!! It’s gorgeous and looks amazing on you! :) Donuts = only mini ones! Unless they’re maple bars, which in that case, load me up!

Reply

Those donuts look pretty darn good as does that pizza! I want to get that book for Aiden too. He loves dogs as well. I didn’t know Ree Drummond has kids books either?! That’s cool. I love her.

Reply

I make homemade bread all the time, in fact we NEVER buy bread from the store anymore. I use a bread machine–super easy! I make honey wheat bread for sandwiches, and then whenever we have a family dinner I make something special like cranberry oatmeal or banana walnut or pumpkin.

We went through the whole reicalm with this company and parted wih a consderable sum of money. We were told our claim had succeeded but we would have to pay spanish tax but as we do not have a spanish account they would process the tax for an additional fee. Donuts are one of my favorite things! I used to eat them all the time when I was little and then got greedy one vacation morning and ate 3 donuts and a donut hole in one sitting. Needless to say I got sick and didn’t eat another donut for probably 7 years. But now I know my limit :) We used to go to Yum Yum all the time in college when I lived in San Diego. My cousin and her family live in Willow Glen and I love that restaurant!

Reply

I can’t even handle how amazing your relationship is with Brooke — you’re both so very lucky to have each other :) Those childhood traditions that I had with my mom are some of my favourite memories from growing up.

Reply

Yippie for a reunion!!!

Reply

Awww I’m so glad you two are reunited! The last place I flew to was Kansas City, but this afternoon I’m getting back on a plane to fly back to CHICAGO!

Reply

Happy you’re whole again!
My running friend can’t have gluten or soy so she bought a bread maker and makes her own bread. After many of our long runs we’d return to her apartment just as the warm loaf was ready and slather it with butter. She tries all types of flour. The one I like the best is sort of sweet. It’s made with almond flour.

Donut? BLUEBERRY CAKE!

Last plane flight was to Rapid City South Dakota (for running of course)

And this week I’ll be doing some rowing machine and elliptical tomorrow and running Thursday and Saturday. I’m also tempted to buy a mini trampoline for myself for the holidays. Looks like a great way to burn a few extra calories…

Reply

LOVE DONUTS! Very happy with a regular old maple bar.

Thanks for sharing your happy reunion. You guys are too cute!

The last place we flew to was Disneyland. The flights were great, but the kids were sick the whole time we were there. We were walking zombies.

Workout: at least 12x400m at 1:45 pace. Lift back and shoulders.

Reply

I make bread all the time. This recipe makes great loaves of bread, but you can also use it for pizza crust: http://www.artisanbreadinfive.com/2010/02/09/back-to-basics-tips-and-techniques-to-create-a-great-loaf-in-5-minutes-a-day

I could really go for a donut right now. Traveling with you and your mom sounds awesome!

p.s. where are those leggings from? I love them!

Reply

I am not a donut fan….the rest of my family can make up with their favorites for the lack of love I have for the round ~ greasy ~ goodness.

We are flying to Florida in January…..and haven’t been on a plane in 2 years so looking forward to that.

Reply

We LOVE Ree Drummond’s Charlie books! We read them to our daughter every night per her request!!

Wish me luck, second ever half marathon is this Saturday with the forecasted high temp being 23 with sleet and snow. A far change from the 59 degrees it is today!

Brooke’s stink eye is the cutest! Last place I flew a plane to was New Jersey, then I had to take the Metro North back to Connecticut. I took it back a day before the deadly train crash happened on Sunday. Feeling really, really thankful that I wasn’t on that train.

I rarely eat donuts, but if I am going to splurge, double chocolate all the way!

Last place I flew to was San Fran. I love CA!

This week my plan is to just get moving again! This last week was full of slacking :) Oh well… back to it!

And the last place I flew was to Cambodia & Thailand for vacation in September. It rocked. That 30 hr travel time however, did not. In a big way.

Reply

I have a bread machine that gets used about once a year. Favorite bread – blueberry – the blueberries are cooked in the mix and the bread is purple.

7 mile trail run today. I really need to work on stretching/rolling better – I’ve been stiff as a board lately.

Favorite donut – Krispy Kreme when it’s hot.

Last flight – Atlanta to Los Angeles on Saturday. Flying to Hawaii tomorrow.

Reply

Love your Christmas traditions. Those donuts look amazing!! Last flight was coming back from Syndey, Australia to NYC after our one-year anniversary trip.

Reply

Salads with those crunchy noodles are top are the best. I don’t think salads should be made without them. Much better than your basic crouton in my opinion :)

This week I am starting to build mileage again for a half marathon I am running in Feb! Very excited about doing long runs again!

Reply

Her stink eye is the best! Glad your back together :)
We used to get the bismark (jelly filled) doughnuts with frosting when we were little and they’re still my fave!

Reply

I am loving you Christmas traditions so far!!

and WHERE are those leggings from??? love!

Reply

the evil eye look is hysterical and her cheeks are so cute! glad to see your big happy smile back!

that pizza looks amazing! and that bread too! so hungry now.

When you mentioned the Christmas dog book I thought it might be Ree’s. I like her stuff. She seems like a sweet person.

Favorite donut?? I can’t choose so maple bar and chocolate chip glazed then covered in chocolate frosting. (if this has a name I don’t know it)

I don’t make bread often because I know that hot out of the oven bread is my kryptonite but this recipe is one I like to make in the winter (since u have to get the oven so hot to make it). I like it because it doesn’t require any kneading, just a little planning ahead. It reminds me of the yummy cibatta bread in the bakery. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/08/dining/081mrex.html?_r=0

the last time I was on a plane was almost 8 years ago. I was on a plane to Idaho (with my 9 month old baby girl) to take a class at a natural healing place. Wow it’s been a long time! We just try to drive since we have 4 little kids now.

Workouts for this week are: pyramid weights work with my cathe friedrich dvd (M,W,F). Oh my gosh lifting some of those cycles are so hard i want to lay down!
Then cardio on T, Th, Sat. I haven’t decided if it will be mostly cardio dvd’s ( I don’t have a gym membership) or some a few miles a day running. I was running about 24 miles a week but just needed to start doing something different because my body was rebelling (or maybe becoming to efficient) and not wanting to get off this plateau I’m on. My cardio is always followed by 30 mins of p90x yoga (just the first 35 mins though. i don’t have time to do the whole 100 mins!)

Enjoy your day!

Reply

oh and I should say not running a lot this last 2 weeks has been super hard mentally. I almost don’t know what to do, but I do get a about 6-10 miles in and I will ramp it back up (with the running) in January. can’t wait! Right now I’m trying to build up my muscles again!

Reply

Her stink eye is hilarious!

I have made a wonderful Hawaiian bread before. I should find my recipe for that…

The last place I flew to was Charlotte, North Carolina from Oregon.

Reply

Those stink eye pics are perfect! I love how little kids can be so honest with how they feel. Adorable! Glad to see you two back together again :)

Reply

my coach has me doing lots of additional cross training and strength work over the winter — so today was a run AND yoga! great combo. donuts are best in any flavor, but i really like the cake-y ones.

Reply

I had a dream last night that I was running on a trail when you and a group of other bloggers ran up beside me. You run so much faster than me though, so to tempt you into running slow with me, I decided to tell you all about how the Color of the Year is this greyish purple. I think I read that you like purple so obviously that would make you want to run slow so you could talk about it with a stranger, hahaha.

Reply

This makes me so happy!!!! Of course I would have ran with you!!!!

Reply

:D Yay for hypothetical dream running buddies!

ps I LOVE that you said “would have” instead of “would of”. LOVE. I get very tired of all the “would of’s” in this world. Just goes to prove there are still good people out there…

Reply

I’m rubbish at baking bread. Banana bread is easy to make, but I don’t think it really counts as bread!

Reply

I think I did too much Holiday partying because I got sick with my main symptom exhaustion.
I cannot even think about workouts, but I sure can think about donuts. The only time I feel semi normal is when I eat things with big sugar quantities.

Reply

Last time I flew on a plane was home from Italy after a magnificent family trip with my hubby and two sons.

My favorite donut flavor is Bavarian cream, but I haven’t had one for a few years. There was a place next to campus at Virginia Tech called Carol Lee Donuts that made the best donuts in the world! Yum!

Love Brooke’s stink eye look! :-)

Reply

I use the Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day method for bread. I almost always have dough in the fridge. I love their pizza cookbook too. I can have homemade artisan pizza on the dinner table in about 30 minutes if I already have dough in the fridge!

I ran 4.8 miles today. I’ll probably run one more time, hit the bike once, maybe swim. We’ve got a 4 mile Jingle Bell Run this Saturday.

Cherry fritters!

Last place I flew to was NY 6 years ago for my BIL’s wedding. I did NY with a 3 month old and felt like super mom!

Reply

Re-united and it feels so-o good (with my singing voice). I’m glad Brooker and you are back together.

That pizza looks amazing and homemade bread is always the best! My mom and I make a really good copycat version of the dark brown bread from the Cheesecake Factory. My favorite donuts are the cakey ones with either powdered sugar or cinnamon powdered sugar!

Reply

So happy you have been reunited with your daughter. That book looks so cute. We don’t have much donut variety here. I can’t go past a hot, fresh cinnamon donut with scalding tea. Enjoy this special time.

Ok, that pizza looks soooooo good! My mouth is watering!

Glad you two ladies are back together again! :)

Reply

So happy you’re reunited! :) My favorite homemade bread is banana bread – that counts right? I went to Pure Barre this morning (tryyyying to be better about strength and toning!) and I’m already excited for my run tomorrow! Last time I flew was to Vegas for the RnR 1/2 Marathon on my birthday!

Ree Drummond! One of my favorite food blogs, and I love that she has childrens’ books too!

My mom makes homemade persimmon bread… so delicious! She found a way to make it butter-and oil-free, yet moist and yummy!
Wow! Brooke is so big now :D

Reply

I’ve made banana bread etc…but not real bread. i don’t dare buy a bread maker because I KNOW what I would do when it was through baking-lol! I’m headed out the door in a minute for a strength training exercise class at the Y. Last time I flew it was home to the New Orleans area. I don’t think there is a donut I don’t like. Brooke does have that stink eye down-that’s hilarious! Glad you two are back together again!
