The reason I don’t go running at night…

We had to get to the airport at early.com yesterday so a run did not occur.  (And then our plane was 3 hours late…  not my favorite thing).

Brooke and I were goners and slept for pretty much the entire flight.

IMG 4794

Don’t be jealous of my veiny hands.

PS If you are wondering why I was wearing the same outfit (some may argue that I am wearing pajamas and not real people clothes) two days in a row… It is a long story and the story doesn’t really justify the situation so we will skip out on the explanation.

I had one diaper left in my possession when I got home so the first stop was to Costco to go buy 150 of them (gotta love bulk).  While I was there I decided I was going to buy real groceries so that I stop eating out so much.

Booooooooooo:

IMG 4808

What I ended up leaving with: Qunioa, craisins, feta, spinach, wraps, beef jerky, chicken, shrimp and fruit leathers.  I will probably buy most of my produce at the normal grocery store because I can’t finish off bulk produce all by myself (unless it is broccoli or spinach) before it goes bad.

I put Brooke down for a nap, had some church things to do and had enough time to fit 2 miles in on the treadmill…  This is why I don’t run at night—> I know I won’t do it or I won’t get in a full workout.  I started at 7.0 mph and bumped up the speed every 45ish seconds and ended at 9.6 mph (the fasted I have ever gone on my treadmill).

Dinner was a spinach salad with chicken.

Day #2 of our 25 Days of Christmas Traditions!!!  Brooke and I went and picked out a Christmas ornament and of course she wanted a dog ornament.

DSC 8202

We went over to my sister’s house to decorate the tree.  We will be having Christmas morning at her house this year.

Add these to the list of traditions too.  The mini peppermint waffles were the best in my opinion.

A question from a reader!  I have never experienced problems with blisters so I was hoping that anyone that has could help her out in the comments!

“I have a question I am hoping you can help me with. I have been a runner for several years and haven’t had a real problem with blisters until about a year ago. Any time I run over 3 miles I come home with a blister. Some are small but some are rather large. I have tried different socks, shoes, loosening my laces or tightening them. I have also tried some foot powders. It makes running races very painful and about mile 8 I feel like I have to walk quite a bit because I just can’t run on them.”

Anyone have any recommendations for her?  Have you ever dealt with blisters from running?

Night runners… give us your tips on how to make it happen!  How long have you been a night worker outer?

What are some of the staples on your grocery list?

I am with you on the night running thing! If it doesn’t happen in the morning, it just doesn’t happen!

I’ve never dealt with a blister problem so I’m not much help there :(

I get the worst blisters from running but honestly they have always been from bad socks. Have you tried injinji toe socks? They prevent from toes from rubbing together and prevent blistering for me. Also keeping my feet as dry as possible.

I don’t work out at night at all. I’d rather be up at 4am versus going to work out at 4pm. LOL so my tip is go to bed at 8pm to take up at 4am. ;)

Reply

I live in San Diego and a bunch of my friends work for Injinji! They are the only socks I wear for running and I totally agree!

Reply

I used to have horrid blisters from running and spent oodles trying to find good socks. Injinji have been the only ones I have been able to wear and not get blisters!

Is that actually how gracefully you sleep on an airplane?! I definitely think I’m one of those mouth open, head rolling people!
Love that Brooke chose a dog for her ornament!
Staples on my grocery list- tons of veggies, wraps, and whatever fruit looks good!
I get blisters under my toenails, but it looks like she’s tried everything that works for me. I wonder if bodyglide would help?

Reply

Yes, Bodyglide! I put it in between my toes, on the balls of my feet, and on the tops of my toes. (a THIN layer!) Totally works!

Reply

Grocery staples: chicken breast, greek yogurt, cereal, tons of veggies, wraps, and ICE CREAM!!!! :)

Reply

I know she’s tried different shoes, but has she tried different shoe sizes..? Your feet can change sizes (especially if you’ve had kids)- maybe the problem is the size, not the actual shoe.

Socks are really important- if you have blister problems, spend lots of money on the right kind of socks.

Maybe put Vaseline on the areas that are affected the most? Some kind of lubricant to protect against the friction might help.

I also had a random/awkward blister on the bottom of my arch (where nothing usually touches..?) I think the problem was the insert I had, because when I changed it out, I didn’t have any more random/awkward blisters :) Hopefully some of that helps?

Reply

I second the Vaseline! I just put it all over my feet before a run and it seems to do the trick!

Reply

Ditto for me too – it works great!

Reply

I can’t run at night either! Brookes face looking at that ornament cracked me up. I know Holidays can be hard when you are divorced but I’m so glad you have so much support around and of course you have all of us!

Reply

I always buy almond milk and some kind of veggie every grocery trip. Running at night is usually pretty tough but sometimes after a stressful day I can run forever.

Reply

I can’t buy produce in bulk either. One thing that might help is doing a little bit of meal planning and then only buying the produce you’ll need. It helps stuff not to go bad, and it’s pretty easy once you get the hang of it!

Don’t know if she’s tried Injinji, but I second the fact that they are the best running socks I’ve ever worn.

Reply

I have gotten blisters before, even with really good socks and shoes. Try body glide! Rub it all over your feet before you put socks on. It worked for me.

Reply

We always buy nuts from the bulk bins. Every week. We love to snack on them and they are so much cheaper in the bulk bins–which we love!!!

I can never sleep on planes–love that you can!

Reply

I don’t run at night, but I do run in the late afternoon when I get home from work. My motivation, especially this time of year, is to get out the door as quickly as possible so that I don’t have to run in the dark!

Reply

Suprasorb H worked wonders for me!

I hate working out at night. But if I have to, I put on running clothes and without much thinking go out in front of the door. I’d feel silly if I didn’t run.

Reply

I buy spinach, banana and nuts in bulk.

Reply

Love Brooke’s ornament!

Reply

I would get them anytime I changed my sneakers and from certain socks I owned. Then I found this one day shopping through CVS and started applying it before my runs. I love it! I hope it helps!

Ditto on the bulk produce. I actually end up making a couple smaller trips to the grocery store rather than one big one because having too much around that I need to use up just stresses me out… especially when it can go bad like fresh fruits and veggies. This is probably why I can never make banana bread — my bananas never manage to reach the perfect level of ripeness because I eat them up too quickly.

Reply

Wrap your feet! It worked wonders for me when I was marathon training. I would use a nonstick gauze pad and then secure it with athletic tape over where I got the majority of my blisters (Mine were mid-foot and on the outer side.) It helps you heal and prevent new ones!

Reply

Sleeping like a little angel on the plane. Lucky you! I pretty much buy the same stuff every week at the store, milk, fruit, veggies, whole wheat bread, almond butter, pomegranate raspberry preserve, Babybel cheese, egg whites, oatmeal and natural white cheddar cheetos. Yum. Costco is such a dangerous place for me. I go and all of a sudden, I need everything.

Reply

I get bad blisters…sometimes they are even blood blisters. Unfortunately, I haven’t found much that helps. I always run Vaseline on my feet before I run and I stick to thin running socks. I finally stop getting them once my feet blister, heal, and repeat enough times. I hope you get some relief soon!

I can run at night time if I have to. I def have to make it interesting with speed work or some other type of fun treadmill workout.

Grocery staples…almond butter/peanut butter and bananas!

Reply

I’m more of a morning exerciser.. but sometimes I really really love going for a night run.. These runs are never part of my real training plan..but more about having fun :) Grocery staples.. Almond butter, lots of fruit and veggies, full fat greek yogurt, eggs, chicken and coconut oil!

Socks that don’t wick basically just turn your shoes into a swimming pool! Also when you run your feet swell so anytime you try on shoes you should consider going up a half size. Also if you get fitted make sure you are standing so you can see how your foot handles the weight. Some peoples arches collapse quite a bit and elongate your feet! Especially if you have ever had a child (carrying around extra weight is work for your feet!) so if you have possibly had a baby recently get refitted!

Also learn to love bodyglide. I will put that ish on EVERYTHING and I have zero problems any more. I still get the standard wear and tear but nothing I can’t handle any more! Hope that helps!

I am a morning / afternoon lady! I don’t like working out when it is dark!

Grocery staples: Zucchini, boneless pork chops, chicken breasts, red onion, sweet potato, and eggs!

Reply

I’m sticking around for the comments. I have a horrible hotspot on my left arch that I got about six month ago now and nothing I’ve tried makes it better. It makes running over three miles really difficult.

Reply

I used to have pain on top of my feet. X-Ray shows I have bone spur on both feet. I just changed the way how I lace my shoes. It leaves space over the area that hurts.
My shoe lace looks like this,

Hope it makes sense.

I use to have major blister issues. I switched my socks to a thinner sock (which seems like the opposite) and it really helped things! I will also use a product called Second Skin to help with the blister its self.
I will do my long run in the evening. I have so much to get done and I don’t have much time during the week and so I really saver this time. I make sure to eat carbs in for breakfast and lunch and drink enough water but not too much. I like running in the evening because I enjoy coming home eating dinner and falling asleep right away! :)
Lunch meat, rice cakes, fruit/veggies, natural peanut butter and almond milk are the staples in my house!

Reply

I used to get blisters all the time and now I swear by Injinji toe socks and inserts because my feet overpronate. I haven’t had blisters since!

Reply

The BaindAid brand blister stick actually works really well. I tend to get a blister on my upper toes and the blister stick keeps them from happening, or getting bigger. They have it in the pharmacy sections at most stores.

And I actually prefer to run in the evening/night. I burn off any stress (or treats) from the day and feel I have more energy to work harder. Plus I fall alseep faster after a workout. If I workout/run in the morning I’m a zombie for the rest of the day.

Reply

I get blisters from certain shoes and socks, but haven’t had any since I got new shoes. I mentioned it at the Running Room when I was buying the shoes, and the people there swear by Bodyglide (also great for chafing in other areas).

I have a very hard time running in the evening, so it’s pretty rare for me.

I always get grape tomatoes, orange pepper and cucomber for my lunch snacks, frozen strawberries (sliced) to go on my morning steel cut oats, almond milk (plain AND chocolate), and some kind of gluten free yumminess (cookies or granola bars).

Reply

I got blisters when the toe box of my last pair of shoes were too big. I would definitely suggest different shoes! But if you’re stubborn like me and want to wear the shoes for their lifetime anyways, I put band aids over the blistered area for long runs – but just the sticky part! I got a big costco sized box of band aids and trimmed the gauze part off. Gauze part = blisters anyways.
I’m a shift worker so I’m pretty much an anytime runner! And I always need spinach, red pepper, feta, bananas, apples and whole wheat bread/wraps when I go for groceries!

Reply

I’m an AM runner! If I don’t get it in first thing, it’s not happening. Haha.

Reply

That used to happen to me before I knew the importance of getting a 1/2 size bigger than my street shoes. (Also before I starting using the Pureflows). :)

Reply

I love night running! I think it’s all about getting into a routine and just making it a natural extension of what you do at night. I found it really hard at first but now I just know: get home from work, small snack, run, late dinner, etc. I don’t even have to think about it.

I’ve only ever gotten a blister once during a long run. I think the reason was my socks got wet from a puddle and they were mostly cotton. I usually wear bamboo socks during long runs and have never had a problem with them. I know the commenter tried sever:)al different kinds, but if she hasn’t tried bamboo yet it may work!

Reply

Have you tried Body Glide on your feet? I put it between my toes and other area I am prone to get them and it prevents them like a charm!!

Hope you find something that works!

Reply

sounds like an exhausting journey home! sometimes runs don’t happen and life does, and that’s okay. hang in there!

Reply

I used to run after work only and also dredwd the weekday run. Sad huh. The treadmill and morning workouts have now changed my life. I love the feeling of starting the day with a good sweat, as well as knowing I don’t have to worry about fitting it in at night.

Staples: apples, bananas, oatmeal, peanut butter, coffee, creamer, eggs, whole wheat bread/English muffins, brownie mix, gelato….

Reply

Um, I meant “dreaded”… Blaming my man hands…

Reply

Body glide or vaseline for those blisters!

Reply

I wear Wrightline socks and have never gotten a blister when running.

I could never run at night, I am a morning person so if it’s not done in the morning, or afternoon…it’s not going to happen!

Staples for me are avocado, apples, quinoa, greek yogurt…I must buy these every single week!

Reply

Unless it’s the weekend all my runs are at night because there’s just no time before work. It usually takes a LOT of internal pep talks to make me do it because I’m usually so tired after work. I’d prefer to run during the day but with my work schedule it’s my only choice so I have to do it or I don’t run! For blisters, I can get them pretty bad so I usually wear some sort of padded plaster or blister plaster on the places I know I’m likely to get them just to give me extra cushion there when I run.

Reply

Quinoa in anything and everything! Makes the pooper happy, too.

As for the blisters, maybe the shoes she’s picking out don’t have large enough toe boxes for her. Or maybe go up half a size? I wear a 7 in flats and heels, and my Brooks are size 8.5.

Reply

I sometimes take bandaids with me on a run and if I feel a blister start I will stop, dry my foot, and bandaid up! :)

I LOVE running at night. It takes all the stress from the day and melts it away. Running in the morning is nice because it is out of the way, but running at night for me is so much more than getting a workout in. It is a time when I reflect on my whole day, sort out what stressed me, and let go. It is my processing time, and in the morning I already feel great and fresh, so there is nothing to really process. That said, sometimes it is hard to get myself out of the door. I usually have a certain time in my head that is my cutoff time. If I dont start by x,y, or z, I dont get to run that night. So that helps. I love running as it gradually gets darker but getting home before complete dark (of course, in winter I have run in the morning or afternoon or just stick to my neighborhood, but I dont mind that). Also, I love running at night because I am not weak/hungry like in the morning. I have eaten lots of food so I am ready to run with energy! :)

Reply

I have gone night running and night riding after my kids have crashed out for the night. I am lucky in that I live off of a very nice paved trail that has a two mile loop that is lit…BUT…I usually end up running my normal route away from the lights. I usually have on a head lamp and my red rear cycling light just in case any cyclists are coming (again, no cars on this trail). I actually enjoy it because I am usually one of the only ones out there. It really gives me time to focus on my run/ride and simply clear my mind. A nice hot shower usually relaxes me enough to fall right to sleep.

Reply

Staples are milk, cheese, eggs, some kind of pasta, broccoli, carrots, Brussels sprouts, DESSERT :) and I’m sure I’m forgetting some just like I do when I’m at the store… My night workouts consist of walking to the fridge to get snacks or to the bathroom to pee. Sorry I can’t be more helpful there!

Reply

I get blisters on any run over 10km, and I have tried the double-layer socks that rub against each other instead of your foot, new shoes, etc. but the thing I find works the best is to slather your blister trouble spots in Body Glide before your run. I use it for my feet to prevent blisters, and also my collarbone & neck area where my sports bra rubs to avoid getting chaffed there. Give it a try :)

Glad your flight wasn’t flat out cancelled! I don’t know how the weather is in Utah yesterday/today, but here we got 5 inches of snow last night and it’s currently 5 degrees. I’m suuuuuuper nervous for flying home in a little less than 2 weeks… I don’t want the flight to get canceled. I love that she got to pick out an ornament! Such a cute idea!

When I was working full time and sometimes worked until 7:30 if I couldn’t get myself up in the morning I basically had to force myself to run some days. One thing I knew I could never do was come home – I would always opt to go to the gym instead. I would go to the gym and run that way I didn’t have to ability to just go pass out on the couch. To be honest, some days I would skip it I just had to be honest with myself on how my body was feeling.

Both my podiatrist and a runner friend who did two tours of duty in Iraq (think wet feet in Army boots) recommended moleskin to me. I started to get blisters two weeks before a half marathon, and moleskin saved me. It is much better than a band-aid. I find that body glide or vaseline helps as well.

Reply

I’m the same! I can’t do a night workout or run. Or even afternoon haha I just end up laying on the floor for an hour, then telling myself, “Well I have other things to do, and if I do this workout, it won’t allow me to get the others done”.
I always have to have a meat of some kind, and mixed greens on hand! That and bananas and almond butter :)
Aw, I love the look on Brooke’s face when she’s looking at her ornament! So cute :)

Reply

i get terrible blisters too although not usually until i run higher mileage – try glacier gel (http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=glaciergel&tag=googhydr-20&index=aps&hvadid=36295661139&hvpos=1t1&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=878194478480351593&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=b&hvdev=c&ref=pd_sl_fznfve44q_b) it’s the ONLY thing that has worked for me in terms of preventing blisters and blister pain! they help SO much.

Reply

This http://www.amazon.com/Toms-Blister-Shield-Skin-Powder/dp/B001FPYL8G for blisters. Also, have you had your shoes professionally fitted? I get blisters because I have a wide toe box and narrow heels, so knowing that has really helped me to determine what shoes I can and cannot wear. Also, cool wool socks are awesome, no cotton!
I cannot work out at night unless I want to be awake super late…
Grocery staples: almond milk, ice cream, apples, bananas, and green peppers.

Reply

For blisters…Body Glide and good socks (I like Wright Socks and Smartwool).

I used to get HORRIBLE blisters and blood blisters UNDER my calluses, but ever since I started dilgently applying the Body Glide and only wearing specific socks to run in, I’ve been completely blister free!!

Reply

I just can’t run at night, physically impossible.

Reply

I run in the evenings, right when I get home from work (these days, because that’s right before the sun goes down). But I’m not a morning person and I already have to wake up at 5:30am to get to work by 7. I couldn’t wake up any earlier to get a run in. I will admit it is harder to run when the time changes and I can’t run til 8pm. At that point it’s hard to find the motivation to get off my couch and get going!

I’m having a sale on my blog to get rid of some running things I’m no longer using… check it out!j http://whatarisaid.wordpress.com

Most workouts I can do at any point in the day, but running is definitely a morning activity for me. It’s the whole ‘start your workout before your brain knows what your body is doing’ kinda thing ;-)
I buy a lot of meat and pantry staples in bulk (I just freeze the meat) and buy my veggies and fruit each week – the boyfriend isn’t a huge produce eater, so I can’t eat that much considering that I don’t get much help. Staples for me are: squash/sweet potato, spinach, eggs, almond milk, baby carrots, oats, brown rice, chocolate.

J! I am so glad to see you have been reunited with your best buddy! The picture on the plane is adorable… Hope you both have a fantastic Day#3 of Christmas!

Best Blister Advice: In addition to all of the great suggestions above, especially getting the right socks, I recommend duct tape for blister prevention. Following the advice of one of my crazy ultra marathon running friends, I started putting duct tape over the hot spots to prevent blisters before long trail runs. May sound rediculous, but it stays in place, is pretty cheap, and has worked so far. I also recommend using 2nd Skin gel patches and then covering the gel patch with moleskin patches; this method is good for covering current blisters, especially painful ones. The gel patches are soothing and provide a little extra cushion than the moleskin alone or bandaids. Hope this helps! :)

Make sure your shoes fit properly. Some people get blisters or bruises when their shoes are a little too snug!

Reply

For blisters, has she tried going up a half size in shoes or trying a different model?

I used to work out after work everyday when I had a traditional work schedule. Now that I work from home, though, I usually work out in the morning.

We pretty much buy the same things at the grocery store every week. We’re pretty boring that way.

Reply

I used to get blisters all the time on longer runs and speed work. I got lots of suggestions for body glide, vaseline, new shoes, different socks, etc. and I tried it all. The only thing that has worked for me is the socks made by wrightsock. These are the one’s that I have:

http://wrightsock.myshopify.com/products/stride

They are a double layer sock and they are designed to have the friction between the two socks so your feet do not experience the friction. I swear by them! Good luck. Blisters are the worst!

I have been meaning to buy those chocolate star cookies at Trader Joe’s! I bought a beautiful box of their Belgian chocolates as a gift for one of my son’s teachers- they have the best chocolate!

Body gluide aaaallll over the feet. Sometimes Sometimes when I am running long I even put bandaids where I usually get them to prevent them from happening.

Those little peppermint waffles are amazing. I need to make a trip to TJ in a bad way.

That is exactly why I don’t (or try not to) exercise at night either. If it doesn’t happen before noon, there is a 90% chance it aint happening at all. Last Tuesday I didnt run until I put my kids to bed. I got done running around 9:30 and then couldn’t sleep until 1am. No es bueno.

Oh and welcome back to the tundra. I may have cried this morning while walking into the gym, while it was still dark and the wind was blowing the snow sideways into my face. Why do I live here again??

Reply

I love sleep so I just cannot get myself out of bed early enough to run before work. Whether I go to crossfit or run, I plan my workout in the morning and pump myself up throughout the day/ talk myself into it. And it always helps having a workout buddy.

Has anyone tried the strawberry flavored almonds? I limit myself to the small personal bags but they are a must buy.

I’m a night runner whenever I miss the morning. I love running at night. It’s so peaceful.

I was just reading somewhere…Runner’s World? Blog? Some elite (or really awesome runner far better than me) used Aquaphor on her feet before every run and has never had a blister or lost a toenail. She swears by it. I wish I could remember who that was…

I used to have terrible problems with blisters until I finally got fitted for running shoes and accepted what the clerk at the store told me… You MUST buy your running shoes bigger than your regular shoes. I refused to buy bigger shoes for years because I (stupidly) wanted to wear a small size and have my feet look cute and tiny in a small shoe. I just thought it was normal to have to “break shoes in” and accepted that blisters were a part of new running shoes. Let me tell you, THEY ARE NOT. I finally bought a size and a 1/2 bigger (like the clerk suggested) and never went back. Maybe the size 8 running shoes don’t make my feet look cute and petite but it beats the pain of blisters. I felt like a new person once I finally bought the correct size shoe.!!

Reply

HOLY TINY FEET! You wear a 6.5? I envy you. That’s the size that always has the super cute shoes on clearance. Sigh. Darn having a super average sized foot so I have to pay retail for everything.

Reply

I’m definitely not a night runner.
I haven’t dealt with blisters, but I do have a runner’s question. When I run in the cold, when I’m done with my running there is so much pressure in my nose and head. It hurts so bad. By the time I get home, my nose is running, but it doesn’t relieve the pressure and I walk around the next day or two like I have a cold, which I don’t. I don’ t know what I can do to prevent this.

Reply

I am mostly a night runner because of my schedule… honestly it is just hard and you have to make it a habit and just force yourself to do it. My biggest issue with running at night is fuel; I hit a wall way more often than when I run in the morning and I think it’s because of not eating properly throughout the day so if you are going to run at night, you have to pay careful attention to everything you are eating all day long.

Reply

Sorry I cant help with the blisters. Hope she finds relief soon though.

The majority of my workouts are in the morning. Im way more productive in the morning.

Oh Brooke’s face with that dog ornament. So adorable! It will be so fun to look back on each years ornaments. (Dont forget to put the date on them) my baby girl was so into pandas for the last 2 years. Now she loves cats and dogs more. Its fun to see their tastes change.

So staples from the grocery In our house: the 3 b’s-butter, bacon, bread. I order an organic produce basket once a week and that takes care of 80% of our produce needs.

Hope u have a great day Janae and Brooke!

Grocery staples: Greek yogurt, cinnamon raisin bread from TJ’s, dried cranberries, candied almonds, goat cheese, spinach, PB, and banana.

I used to get blisters EVERY RUN. Same spots, too– on the tip of one toe on my left foot, and on the inside ball of my right foot (which always turned into quite a large blister, and I’d often get blisters UNDER blisters in that spot. Annoying). The only thing that worked for me was switching to Smartwool socks. Ever since I started wearing those, I haven’t gotten a single blister. If you’ve already tried that, then my heart goes out to you. It’s frustrating when you’re muscles and lungs feel great, and then a blister pops up to get you.

Reply

I might have worn the same outfit three days in a row last week because I was on a break from school and student teaching so I had nowhere to be and I was too lazy to get dressed. I went from pjs, to gym clothes, to the same outfit. I’m okay with it.

Yesterday, I was stuck in a meeting until 3:45 and a couple of my friends wanted to hang out and chat about our day, but I told them I HAD to go to the gym first otherwise I would never have run. I ended up leaving the gym at 5:45, which is way later than usual, but it did feel good to run off my stressful day.

Reply

I don’t have any experiences with blisters to be able to help out, but I am a night runner!

I run at night by myself sometimes, but I really prefer to have a partner. That way I can’t get done with my day and think I’m too tired or whatever because she will be counting on me! At this point too though, it’s become part of my routine, so it’s easier for me to do night workouts than morning workouts. It’s all about what my body is used to by now.

Reply

I wrap the area that gets blisters with athletic tape (you can buy it at pretty much any pharmacy- it’s just the white tape in rolls) and that helps prevent blisters!

Reply

I love how great food tastes after a workout.
I run 5-6pm, then make dinner, and by the time we are eating ymmmy.

I have also been known to run 7-8pm after an early dinner. and then same thing……..bowl of cereal, jelly toast, whatever……..also delish.

Reply

When I used to run Cross Country in high school we would put duct tape on our blisters before going on a run. It helps stop the painful rubbing against your socks/shoes. It’s the same idea as a bandaid but stays on much better!

Reply

I have only run at night (treadmill) when I’m wide awake and feel like a slug on the couch after everyone else is in bed. About twice a month, and honestly its turned out to be my best runs….both times in November got me my distance records and improved speeds.
My first ever 5miler and then this Saturday night I got my first 10K done.

granted most people don’t like the idea of a 10k ending at 10pm? No worries, I was able to be asleep by midnight and up again with my toddler at 6am like normal.

Reply

Grocery staples include: tortillas, bananas, apples, cheese and crackers!

I do like working out in the evening – BUT I do not run outdoors in the dark. I find that running or working out in the evening does help give me an extra boost in the evening.

My Mom gets blisters constantly and I swear it’s because her shoes are too small. She wont listen to me or my sister though but maybe your reader should try a larger shoe?

I do not run, lift weights, bicycle, zumba or generally move at all anytime in the night time hours. I just cant. I am a get it done in the morning first thing kind of girl. I have always been that way and probably always will.

My grocery staple is froyo. Yes, I know, but I buy Edy’s frozen yogurt every single week of my life, without fail. I have also been known to purchase reeses pb cups to go inside the Edys froyo and it is delish! You should try it and then we can both be addicted.

I am a runner of the night. It’s funny how morning runners don’t understand how people can run at night and yet I think morning people are a part of some freakish cult and I refuse to drink your kool aid and wake up earlier. Mostly, it just works with my schedule.

Reply

That is so funny. I am completely part of the morning cult :)

I love your idea of starting a Christmas Tradition for Brooke. I have a 10 month old and would love to start something like this. Please keep sharing your daily fun!! :)

I’ve never gotten blisters from running, but I was a professional ballet dancer, so I got very used to blisters! If you haven’t tried it yet, you might try putting bandaids over the blisters and then wrap it with athletic tape (you know the cloth-like white kind?). It won’t necessarily prevent blisters, but it makes dealing with them a lot easier. You could also look at some of the gel-toes covers ballet dancers sometimes use–I don’t know these in particular but something like that if it’s on your individual toes. (http://www.discountdance.com/dancewear/style_BH1450.html?camp=Froogle_BH1450&utm_source=Froogle&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=BH1450&utm_campaign=Products&gclid=CPOIx8a2lLsCFUtp7AodV2EADQ) Wrapping your toes in Moleskin is always helpful too! Good luck with the blisters–I know what a pain they are.

Glad you made it home safe!
I went to costco yesterday too! I just posted my shopping cart ;) http://www.hungrymotherrunner.com/2013/12/in-my-shopping-cart.html

I am not a fan of night running either.. I did a few this summer and it was always a PR run.. I run faster because I think creepers are behind me.. ha!

I loved working out when I worked swing shift – right after work at about midnight. Then home for dinner, a shower and bed (aka snoozing by 1/2 hour post-workout!). It was glorious – but I had a lot of workout buddies, which I think is always key.

Pretty much all of the good blister tips have already been covered above, but I would like to know what changed for her a year or so ago? Weight loss/gain? Does she have kids? Age? Location of blisters? Previous / current mileage? Climate? Foot shape? Shoe type(s)? Insert / insoles used?

My feet are crazy low volume but crazy wide (women’s 7 1/2 EEEE). I used to sell shoes/boots at a high-end hiking store before going back to school to become a medical type. Keeping your feet happy is such an incredibly important thing to do, but it is also very individual. Be willing to try lots of options, but remember there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Also be very willing to spend money. Possibly lots of it. You only get one set of feet in this world, so take care of them – and LISTEN to what they are trying to tell you! Knowledgeable shoe salespeople, physical therapists, sports medicine folks and podiatrists can all be excellent resources – or any of them can lead you astray. Advocate for your feet. Good luck!

Reply

No changes in lifestyle so I am not sure why the change in my feet. I have tried going up in shoe size as well. I have tried most of these remedies but to no avail. The majority of my blisters are on the balls of my feet. They get so large that even walking is painful. I love all of the comments and help. I will try taping my feet before I run, I have worn glide in the past but not recently so I will try that again as well. Thanks so much for all of the great feedback. I love it!!!!!

Reply

Hey Amy,
I sometimes get blisters under the ball of my foot too. A podiatrist recommended some extra padding there, so I bought some cheap insoles, cut a circle maybe 1.5 inches across (i.e. the size of the ball of my foot) and used double sided tape to stick it to the bottom of the shoe’s insole. I’ve definitely had fewer problems since then. If you give it a try, maybe tape down part of the patch but leave an edge free so you can grip to pull it back off again if it doesn’t work for you.

Glad you got home safe & sound! Sweet picture of you 2 on the plane.

I am a complete morning workout person! Early.com (5 am). The only thing I can do later in the day is a swim but never workout at night. Sometimes I see people out running at 8 pm and I am baffled–but I am sure that is what the morning commuters think of me out there in the wee morning hours! Staples = fruits, veggies, guacamole, lean meat, almond milk and NUT BUTTERS! I have a serious obsession with nut butters….

Reply

I prefer running at night. It helps me to clear my head and relax from the workday. I have to go right after work because if I go home I am much less likely to go run.

My grocery store staples are chicken breasts, apples and peanut butter, carrots, onions and bell peppers, sandwich thins, and Cheezits. I cook most nights, so I make a weekly grocery list to keep the meals interesting.

Reply

When I break in new running shoes I slather my feet with Vaseline before putting my socks on. Works for me every time! (I use a Kleenex to apply the Vaseline so my fingers don’t get all goopy).

Reply

I’m horrible at working out at night too! I rarely get it done then. For the blisters, I used to rub body glide on my feet and that seemed to help. I also wore balega socks and they did the trick too. They also sell toe caps that I wore when I used to get them every run.

Reply

I love the balega socks!! They have worked great and They do minimize the blisters but I still get them after mile 6. : ( Definitely the most comfortable socks I have found though.

Reply

I don’t run at night unless I have a buddy or I’m going to the high school track across the street. Im a scaredy cat :D
Costco will be the death of me… I spend way too much money there… WAY too much money :p But I feel like everything is such a good deal!!

Reply

I have heard body glide and baby powder work, but I’ve also heard of people duct taping socks to stay in place…just sayin. lol

Reply

I run in the dark, but at 5:15 in the morning. I do not like running at night.
Staples on my grocery list: Fage yogurt, half & half for my coffee, chicken breast, cheese, apples, pretzels.

Hi Janae :) Happy to read that you, Brook and Mom made it back to Utah safe and sound. Really who cares if you wore the same outfit two days in a row :) and who cares if you eat out frequently, I mean really. My husband I do eat out frequently depending upon what is going on and I like it, ie: no dishes to clean. And it can be healthy if you choose to do so and it is fun to try different things.

Anyway, we buy the same wraps and feta cheese that you showed in your picture. My Mom loves this feta cheese, and eats a lot of it! We also buy lots of individual yogurts because they are such a great grab and go item. Also, sugar snap peas, Costco has a great deal on these. Also, broccoli, turkey bacon (oscar meyers from costco, again a great deal), and beans.

Hope you and Brook are having a great day!

I used to look forward to running at night. I didn’t hardly ever dread it. I was just so happy to GET to run! It was the only time that worked in my schedule.

Vaseline where you get blisters
Then put on some decent running socks
Vaseline lasts longer than body glide I find

A doggy ornament is perfect for Brooke this year! Now just follow it up each year with a new ornament that represents something she is into or a new accomplishment that year…first bike, swimming with dolphins, first race, graduation etc. Our kids ornament collection brings back fun memories and they will have a nice collection to take with them to our own tree someday. (Put a little date on the bottom of each)

The only thing that have saved my feet during a run are these blister patches:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003URZNW0/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Nothing I had tried worked (new socks, new shoes, different lacing, etc) until I got these! I haven’t had a blister since.

Reply

Thanks Jenna, those look amazing. I will definitely be trying those out. Great tip!! Thanks

Reply

I would suggest a visit a running store, explain the problem and get fitted for shoes. If it is a continuing problem then it certainly could be the sizing of your shoes or the fit of your shoes. You should not have to apply bodyglide or anything else just to not get blisters for a 3+ mile run.

Reply

I hate night running!!!! I’m so low energy after work – I just want to veg and hang out.

Reply

I haven’t had a blister problem, but if it’s happening that regularly, I’d reevaluate shoes/socks choices.

I’m live according to my schedule. If I schedule a night run (which I do about 2x’s week), then I do it. I prefer first thing in the morning, but I do what the schedule says :)

My grocery store staples are French bread, cheese, spinach, and red onions. Those 4 things are ALWAYS in my shopping cart.

Reply

I always work out at night! I feel like I dont have enough food or caffeine in me until at LEAST 7pm haha

Reply

I get blisters in the same spots every time I up my mileage. They eventually turn back into the callouses that were there. I know sounds lovely doesn’t it. But it’s really like breaking my feet back in again. I love experia and injini socks! They helped me too. I workout after work. It’s just part of my routine. If I didn’t I’d go home & stand in front of the pantry… not good. :) But Saturday long runs are in the morning.

Yummm I need to get to TJ’s asap!! I love peppermint everything!

I workout in the afternoon as a good study break– but I can’t imagine it being very practical if I were a busy mama like you!

Moleskin works for my friends that get blisters. I don’t get em, but they look painful! eeeek.

I only work out at night if I slept through my alarm in the morning, and then I’m grumpy all day because I have to run after work. Humbug. However, I make it happen by pumping myself up with music, and making my night run a combo run/core workout. I run shorter distances if I’m going running at night (I live in kind of a dodgy neighborhood), and then I do the IronStrength workout. It’s fun, forces me to cross train, and breaks up my general running-only routine. I also get to sport all my dorky night running gear: reflective arm bands, a blinking light tag (yes, I do feel like a bicycle), and neon anything and everything I have.

Staples of my grocery shopping: bananas, milk, trail mix and eggs. And cheese.

Reply

Try Vaseline for blisters!

Reply

Yes I love the holiday TJ’s items, especially the frosted mini gingerbread men!!

I really only buy spinach, apples, and carrots in bulk–b/c we can always eat those fast enough!

Love that pic of you guys asleep. TOO cute.

Blisters: if your foot moves in your shoe, use the “ankle lock” shoe tying technique. Invest in moisture wicking socks and use body glide. To treat: I usually poke them with a clean needle, drain and keep bandaid over when running and let breathe when not.

Night running: treadmill, headlamp/hand lights, or run in an area well lit.

Food staples: my recent blog was on them and their benefits. :)

I don’t usually get blisters, but any time I have I’ve found the bandaid advanced healing blister “skin” to be amazing in helping them to heal quickly (and to allow me to keep running without wincing at every step!).

I also picked up those dark chocolate stars! And ate at least 6 for breakfast (that’s what I get for grocery shopping before breakfast;) I didn’t try the peppermint waffles, but will have to pick those up on our next trip!

Reply

(knock on wood) I’ve never really had problems with blisters so I don’t have any advice. I work out mostly at night because I am NOT a morning person so sometimes I’ll start a run at 9 outside or 10 on the treadmill. Once I get going I usually can make a good work out and can sometimes motivate myself to do some strengthening after.

Reply

Food i can’t live without: lettuce, chicken, apples, greek yogurt, almonds, bananas, and juice.

It sounds to me like she could be wearing the wrong size of shoes…sometimes if a shoe is too small, it can lead to blisters. I found that o ut myself last year, once I went a ahlf a size up, it alleviated all blisters. Also keeping up with weekly toenail clipping helps.
Hope this helps!!

i HAVE to be a night runner in the wintertime an d it breaks my heart. I just can’t bring myself to do 90% of my miles on the old ‘mill. i miss daylight, warmth, and shorts (in that order) Motivating myself with a treat when i get home helps get me out the door!!

Reply

I think someone else recommended this earlier, but I have had great luck with Bandaid Friction Block: http://www.amazon.com/Band-Aid-Friction-Block-Stick/dp/B00166FZBG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1386101048&sr=8-1&keywords=bandaid+friction+block

Besides running, I also wear it with heels or any other shoes that rub funny.

Reply

I had major blister problems when I trained for my first half marathon after I hit runs of over an hour. The only thing that ended up working was relacing my shoes into a “heel lock”.

I also use body glide when its really hot out because I live in Georgia and the humidity is the worst. That helps as well!!

Reply

Blisters! Such a drag! Generally there is not enough room in the toe box of the shoe if chronic blistering is occurring. You may even need to go up 1/2 size in shoe to accommodate this issue. Once a blister has occurred, the best remedy is to get a bandaid on it, and then cover the whole section of foot with duct tape- you may even consider prepping the foot this way before the long run begins to prevent having to walk due to pain.
I have a whole article on blisters ony website: http://www.runningyourbody.wordpress.com
I hope you find your answer there!

I get the double layer socks and also build calluses on my toes. Gross I know but it works. When I get pedicures I ask them to leave them alone lol. Runners don’t have pretty feet :). The double layer socks and body glide do wonders for me. Blisters suck so bad though :(

I don’t run at night unless with a group! It is hard to get motivated. I usually have to drink a coffee or something with caffeine to get a workout in past 8.

Reply

If my workout doesn’t happen before about 3:30 in the afternoon, it’s definitely not happening. I just can’t do it later in the day!

Reply

I love running at night. I work in a restaurant, so my shift is usually over sometime between 10 and 11pm. I bring my running clothes to work, make sure to have a little cup of coffee as I’m finishing up my shift, and then change out of my uniform into my running gear and run in the neighborhood where I work before I go home. It’s cooler than running any other time of day (I’m in HI) and it helps calm me down, especially after a busy shift. There are definitely nights when I’m worn out and don’t want to do it. It helps that it’s an established routine and I feel like I don’t have the option not to run. On the other hand, I have zero will power to get up for an early morning run. How do you do it!?

Reply

I have only really gotten blisters when I try a completely different type of running shoe. It can be tricky, but I think you need to get shoes big enough that they will fit as your feet get bigger while running, but not too big that they will move around too much and rub your feet.
I have never been a night runner! A couple times a year I may run after work but 95% of the time I am out running first thing in the morning.

Regarding RECURRING blisters:

I have had these for the ten years I’ve been running and anytime someone suggests socks, powder, blister band aids (these last one mile on my feet and then fall off) I roll my eyes.

Personally, my combination of wide feet and overpronation don’t fit any of the dozens of running shoes I’ve tried so far. I’m 99% sure your shoe is not right.

If you have had few injury issues, low arched less restricting shoes are the way to go! Mizuno inspire was the best for my situation. Honestly minimalist shoes feel amazing on my feet (no blisters!) but I can’t do those with severe pronation.

If you’re like me and get injured you just gotta build up those calluses in more stable shoes. Body glide + curad soft wrap slows down blister formation by about half.

GOOD LUCK….. Feels a bit better knowing there’s someone else who knows how much constant blistering sucks… You’ll figure it out!

Reply

Run in socks only designed for running! That’s the only thing that worked to make my blisters go away!

Reply

Did you try switching shoe SIZES?? This happened to me 2 years ago and it turned out that I was unknowingly running in shoes that were one size too small. I had just assumed that my running shoe size was the same as my regular shoe size and it turned out that I needed one size up for running.

I hope you figure it out!!

I am so excited to read about the traditions you start this Christmas with Brooke! Makes me miss being little and doing those traditions year after year! You should see if there is a place where you could see reindeer! When I was little, the Whole Foods by us had reindeer to pet and feed every year! So naturally we saw them, and of course we had to leave cookies and REINDEER FOOD for Santa on Christmas eve.

Reply

I have the same issue. I put tape on my feet where I normally get blisters. This helps me.

Reply

Vaseline and good moisture wicking socks for blisters.
Grocery staples are greek yogurt and ice cream!

FOR THE READER QUESTION: I get a re-occurring blister on my right foot (that is my pronating leg). I had to get inserts that adjusted my entire gait and I haven’t dealt with a single one since. If I don’t wear the inserts, I start to form a blood blister in the same spot and its always on my 7 mile runs. I wear Superfeet Insoles in Blue.

Reply

Okay, why has nobody else commented on those lashes?! They look super fabtabulous and you MUST share the kind of mascara/super tips to get lashes that amazing.

Reply

I am definitely a night runner. Even though I am a morning person I do not like running early. Due to my schedule I would have to head out to run by 4:45AM and I just don’t feel safe running outside at that time. Most people are still asleep so the neighborhood is eerily quiet and I feel more vulnerable. I run at night, anywhere from 6pm when I get home from work to 9pm. I live in a nice neighborhood so I feel safe running there at night. On the weekend I run in the morning… most of the time.

My staples: English Muffins, Apples, Almond Butter

Sorry I can’t help with blisters I have never had any but keep us posted if you find a cure!

Reply

I’ve used body glide or Hammer’s Seat Saver on hot spots, and both of them work well! And definitely check your shoe size! Get them measured at a running specific shoe store. And try more socks!! When I worked at a shoe store, we recommended the double layer Wright Sock to customers who struggled with blister problems.

Reply

I can’t run at night either!! If I ever have to do it I try to rope someone else into running with me – I really can’t do it alone! haha

Reply

I am complete opposite- I can only run late afternoon or evening! I don’t even mind running in the dark. I need to find some night races… :-)

Same as Hannah: omg your lashes look *so* fabulous!

Cotton socks will keep away the blisters. I tried compression socks once and got my first (and only) blister, quickly went back to cotton. Moisture wick is good is good for keeping your feet dry (especially in the summer). I also apply vasoline between my toes. The one time I had a blister on my “little” toe, I drained it, put on neosporine and a bandaid. In 24 hours it was fine and I never stopped running. As for running at night, Asics makes a running shoe with reflectors (nimbus?!?), they’re about $20 more than regular shoes ($150 +/-) . I wear a reflector vest so didn’t see the need for the more expensive shoe. Also, running shoes should be a full size larger than regular shoes, but that’s a no-brainer, every runner should already know this.

I love that tradition! We do it every year with my parents still!

Ahh! My one year old also has those pajamas. Gotta love the Carters selection at Target!

Love your pants! I’m having a legging party at my house on Saturday at 1 that has fun patterns! Seriously, I wear them everyday. Who wears normal jeans anyway?!

Reply

I’m an after-work runner except for Saturdays. I have been since high school. After marathon training, I got really used to getting a long run first thing on Saturday mornings. Now I don’t feel normal if I don’t get it in. It’s hard to motivate yourself sometimes (especially in the winter) to run at night but when you sit at a desk all day you are just itching to move! PS I totally agree with you on the produce at Costco. It’s just not worth the cost savings if half of it just goes bad before you can eat it.

Reply

For blisters get Smartwool socks! I haven’t had a blister since I started wearing them. They are kind of expensive so buy one pair and try them out.
