Running in the dark tips and the positives of going to California.

We are getting in as much quality snuggle time as possible.

I can’t believe I forgot to tell you this but on Tuesday’s run with Josse we saw a shooting star during our first mile.  It was beautiful and we were both in awe.

This is a pic of the moon from this morning.

Rachelle, Josse and I took it nice and easy up the canyon this morning.  We are all in the mood to take things slow this month.  Actually, all of my running friends are kind of dealing with burnout right now…  Must be an epidemic.

We look forward to this drinking fountain (and Josse prefers to do some yoga while drinking from it) every time we run in the canyon.  The water is sooooo good.  I think it comes straight from the mountains.

We did 7 miles at who knows what pace because I forgot to turn my garmin off after I finished running and then drove home with it on so it says that I did a few 2 minute miles at the end.

Brooks sent on over some awesome night running gear.  The Women’s Essential Capri and the Women’s Nightlife LSD Lite Jacket III  will make sure that you are seen when you are running at night.

PS the white thing is the jacket… it folds up into a little pocket that is on the jacket.  As you probably already guessed it, I get really excited about the fact that it does this.

The shell is windproof (thank goodness) and water-resistant and it is perfect to put on over warmer gear (or over just a tank if you live in warmer areas).  It has double back vents and it is incredibly light (just 4.3 ounces).  It has reflective spots on the front, back, sides and arms… perfect for early morning running or night running plus I love the white and pink combo.  The only thing I wish it had is front pockets because I love having front pockets on all of my jackets.

The wide waistband is my favorite part about the capris… the waistband makes them extra comfortable.  There is a back pocket that is waterproof and the material that the capris are made out of is incredible soft and comfortable.  The capris also have front and back retroflectivitiy.

And some awesome tips from Brooks about running at night!

Tips for Night Owl Runners

  • Run Against Traffic.
  • Obey All Traffic Laws.
  • Open Your Eyes.
  • Keep Your I.D. on You.
  • Carry your cell phone at all times.
  • Stay on Well Lit Paths.
  • BE VISIBLE.

Highlights of Nightlife

  • Check out this video on the effects of nightlife gear here.
  • Retroreflectivity
    • In addition to the visual intensity of our Nightlife colors, reflective details are fully integrated into each piece for 360° of visibility.
    • Many pedestrian-car accidents happen when turning corners and not head on. 360° of visibility helps the runner be seen from all angles.
  • Human in motion
    • The location of the retroreflectivity on five key motion zones and outline of the body signal to the brain that the wearer is human, versus a traffic cone.
  • Fluorescent colors
    • High visibility fluorescent material absorbs energy and reemits it as visible light
    • Fluorescent colors are most important daylight and dusk lighting conditions
  • Contrast
    • Contrast design increases visibility in daylight and dusk lighting conditions
    • Colors outlined in a contrasting color or most visible to the eye. Color with a black border is easier to see. This is a prime example of why Brooks’ Nightlife gear is often paired with the contrasting colors of black or anthracite. Try it for yourself with the example below:

We are about to get on the plane now for California and a good friend of mine reminded me to focus on the positives of this trip (because I have mastered the skill of focusing on the negatives of the trip;)

1.  SUNSHINE.  Lots of it.

2.  Running in sunshine.  Running in shorts and a tank!?!?

3. Bangs. Bangs. Bangs. Bangs. (FYI if you are a new reader… Bangs Friend (Katie’s nickname) and I always have an incredible time together and I have missed her so much).  I can’t wait to see my California friends.

4. My aunt, uncle and cousins that I have missed like crazy.

5. I will be sleeping in until the afternoon ever day.

6. My mom will be making her stuffing for Thanksgiving at my aunt’s house.  I don’t know if I could handle a Thanksgiving without both Brooke and my mom’s stuffing.

7. Delicious Mexican food… I have missed my favorite taco restaurants in San Jose.

Hope you are having a great day and I’ll see you soon!  Happy Thanksgiving Eve!

Good luck this weekend!

I love that you are focusing on the positives, its definitely better for your heart and mind than the negatives. If you are feeling sad, only let yourself be sad for 1 hour per day, and then pull yourself out of it. That’s my rule when I’m going thru tough times.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving and all the good food that will be there.
Totally focus on the task at hand and stay strong. So glad that
your parents are with you. Good luck. You are an amazing mother; you will get through this, I promise.

Welcome back to California! As long as you wait until the sun is up tees and shorts are perfect! I’ve been running about 5:30am so I’m still in sleeves. (and reflective, promise!) but the weather has been really lovely.

Travel safe and Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving to you and Brooke and your whole family. Keep up the positive thoughts (even when you don’t feel like it, just like your mantras when you are not feeling a run!) and know that all your readers will be sending them to you also!

I had a layover in the Salt Lake City airport this morning, and I looked for you at Cafe Rio! I was very disappointed when you were not there. :) I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!!!

Reply

Hahahah we flew out of Provo, otherwise you would have found me there! Did you eat there? Please say yes!

Reply

No, I didn’t. :( It was 10am in the morning, and traveling always makes my stomach feel weird. So I just nibbled on a bagel and a protein bar! But I just moved, and there is a Cafe Rio about 30 minutes from where I live, so it is on my list of places to visit!

Love, love, love your black and white tights in the cuddling photo…where did you get them? Sending you positive vibes for cali…Hope it all goes well:)

I LOVE the Brooks Nightlife gear!! I have almost everything they make because the bright colors make me very visible in the woods during hunting season.

Remember your record of getting through difficult dates is 100% so far! I read that once & it stuck with me. You’ll get through this. Look at what you’ve already gotten through & you’re even stronger! Just look for the positive like you said. You got this!
Happy Thanksgiving!!

Have a great thanksgiving Janae! Good idea to focus on the positives, I live not far from San Jose so I can agree to enjoy the Mexican food!!

You go girl! Love the focus on the positives bit :) You do a great job of that every single day, so you have a lot of practice and just remember how many people you are inspiring every single day. Fact–when I see that HRG has a new post, I do a mini-dance on the inside because I know it’s going to be fun/cute/funny/awesome/helpful. I like other blogs too, but nooothing compares, nothing compares to yoooouuuuu. Creepy much!

Another one of the positives of going to California :)

Reply

Have a great Thanksgiving and time in CA!!

Reply

I’ve been looking for night running clothes; perfect!! Good luck in CA. Holidays and travel seem to make a difficult situation so much more challenging. Keep that “bright side” list with you!

Reply

It’s wonderful to travel somewhere warmer this time of year! I got to my parents house last night and ran in shorts this morning…two days ago I was running in a windchill of 5 degrees with a million layers on where I live. So warmer weather is a definite POSITIVE of Cali for you!

Also, I’m feeling a little burnout too from running…I think its from the cold weather. At least that’s what I’m blaming it on. :)

Reply

Whatttt that jacket is the coolest. And yay for your mom’s homemade stuffing!! :) Have a safe flight, and enjoy your time here in (mostly) sunny California!!! <3

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you have a great day full of positives :)

Reply

I have the white Brooks jacket, I’ve only worn it for one run so far but it kept me dry in cold rain last week.

Enjoy the singing and try to focus on the positives of the weekend :)

Reply

Happy Thanksgiving! Looks like you’ll be in my neck of the woods! The weather has been beautiful up here (except for a cray cray stint of rain last week). Enjoy the break from the cold:) Also, you mentioned delicious Mexican food in San Jose, I sincerely hope you mean La Vic’s. If you haven’t tried it…you.must.go! (and don’t forget to ask for THE SAUCE, they will know what you mean)

Keep your head up girl and have a blast!:)

Love all the snuggle time you got in with Brooke <3
I was feeling kinda blue since my cutie-pie daughter will be gone for a week starting tomorrow, but your post reminded me to find to find the positives about it. Here's what I've come up with: I'll eat cereal for dinner every night! I'll watch whatever I want on TV!

Sending you big big hugs and support for your time in California.

Keeping you in my prayers this week, but I know you will make the best of the situation and have a wonderful thanksgiving. Believe it or not, it DOES get easier.
Since you’ve been using a lot of quotes recently, I’ll throw one in from Les Mis – “Even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise.”

I also was hoping you had some advice about stress fractures. I know you had one in the past and I was wondering what your symptoms were, or if you could direct me to a prior post about this issue. My doc thinks I have one in my femur and I guess I’m hoping he’s wrong :)

Much love this week!

Good luck Nae!

Dropped my glove in the port-a-potty during my run this morning. It was awesome. I figured you all could start your day with a giggle at my expense. Happy Thanksgiving Janae (and all the beautiful ladies who read her blog). Have a wonderful day.

Sending you even more hugs. I’ve never been in split family situation, but my best friend and her daughter are currently going through it. Thinking of you two and how strong you both are!!!
