Our Thanksgiving Celebration

First of all… I have gotten some questions about where some of my boots and my purse are from.

Remember when Brooke was this small….

NewImage

1.  ‘Troopa’ Boots!

2.  The newer version of my tall boots that I bought 6 years ago…. HERE!!

3.  My purse is from HERE!!  (I like to refer to this purchase as ‘the time I was going through heck and thought that spending a large amount of money on a bag would make me feel better… and it did… and it still does.”  I do think that spending good money on a bag is okay because you use it EVERY single day).

And Brooke wanted me to give you her outfit details… Target.  Target.  Their kid clothes are my favorite.

My whole family (including my cousins, aunt and Mer) came over last night to celebrate Thanksgiving.  My parents and I will be in Northern California for Thanksgiving so we thought we should do something last night with everyone before we leave.

Brooke woke up from her nap in a very grumpy mood.  She has gotten good at the pouty lip.

I swear they are twins that are just 7 years apart (ps that is how far apart me and my sis are so that makes me happy).

What… you don’t have taco soup and cornbread when you celebrate Thanksgiving?!?

 DSC 7987

My Mom’s Taco Soup:

1 lb ground beef

1 large onion-chopped

1  28-oz. can crushed or chopped tomatoes

1 15-oz. can tomato sauce

1 15-oz. can corn, undrained

1 15-oz. can kidney beans, undrained

2 14-oz. cans pinto beans, undrained

1 envelope hidden valley ranch dressing mix

1 envelope (or 2 tbsp) dry taco seasoning

STEPS:

1.  Brown beef and onion in skillet.  drain.

2.  Put all ingredients in slow cooker and cook on low for 4-6 hours.

3.  Garnish individual servings with tortilla chips, shredded cheese and sour cream.

What our family looks like after we eat large meals.

My aunt gave me the best back massage ever.

IMG 4469

And of course some desserts made an appearance.

PS I think my parents really like being grandparents.

Canadian Thanksgiving already passed a while ago – it was in October! My Sunday night dinner was some traditional Ethiopian food with my landlady. She is a doll and it was delicious. Looks like you guys had a great time!

I love Brookes Elizabeth Taylor Knot on her head. Big sunglasses and that could be her Halloween costume next year!
My favorite thing is stuffing mixed with cranberry sauce! in the shape of a can of course.
My siblings are 3 year, 6 years older, and then 6 years younger. My younger sister was a surprise.

I think I’m looking forward to broccoli cheese soup the most :-) One of my sisters is 20 months behind me, the other is 5 years! Safe travels!

We’ll be in Northern Virginia for Thanksgiving visiting my folks and my hub’s son. It’ll be a chance for our daughter to meet everyone and vice versa. Included in that is a hoped-for meeting with the woman who hit my hub while he was riding his bike that forever changed his life.

The woman is awesome, and were it not for her, I wouldn’t have my hub. She just had a bad moment of sunlight and trees, and as a result.. pow!

She took it very hard (lost 17 lbs in depression the first month post accident) which is understandable given that it was less than 50-50 that Scott would live. That Susanna and I will (finally) meet her in person so she can see how far Scott has come thrills me! (Scott and the woman chat each year on their “anniversary,” so she’s seen good healing, but seeing a running-around baby from the mangled man on the bike, well… it’s a whole other level of healing and peace.)

Oh, and the other great part is that we’re staying at one of my closest friend’s house. She’ll be out of town, and …. yes, she was the first person on the scene post hit. She thought she’d be the last person to see my hub alive.

So thankful for a nasty situation that has turned beautiful with faith, hope, and love!

This is one of the loveliest stories I’ve ever heard.

Reply

That is a sweet story! I want to hear how it goes. Will it be on your blog?

Reply

What a powerful story, I hope you guys get to see her!

Stacy,

Thanks.

I hadn’t planned on blogging about it, because I never thought it would matter to anyone but us. Hmm… *shift of perspective*

We’ll see what happens and how it all evolves. I don’t know how many emotions will come up, etc.

Right now I’m just trying to keep almost-one-year-old Susanna from tearing up her Grandma and Grandpa’s place… while being grateful for Scott’s “angel” at whose house we’re staying.

Seriously, the woman texted and said, “if you need anything, just text”- meanwhile she’s left us her house (and her car if we want it)- with food and more. She sees beyond the accident, the struggles, and into the positive life changes as a result of it. (Though it profoundly impacted her, as one might imagine… Holding a man, his right ankle nearly severed, not conscious, blood everywhere. All the while she’s a cyclist, a runner- a super fast one, a triathlete knowing the full impact. Yet, not knowing who he was nor if she’d ever be in contact with him to find out. … She found him via a Washington Post article on his accident.).)

Today is our Thanksgiving! We don’t have family anywhere near us so were celebrating with friends! My favorite dish is the sweet potatoes! Sunday night dinner was Chicken quarters with green beans and rice- delish! I have 2 sisters (twins) and a brother- my brother is 6 years younger and my sisters are 7 years younger!

Happy Thanksgiving!

We have Thanksgiving at my in-laws’ every year. My family wasn’t big on Thanksgiving and are HUGE on Christmas, so we decided that’s how we divide the holidays.

My sister is 2.5 years older than me and my brother is three years younger than me.

I think I had cereal for dinner last night, but that was after eating my body weight in popcorn at the movies.

Reply

Thanksgiving will be in MN!! My favorite food is my aunt’s pumpkin torte…it’s amazing!! Load it with whipped topping and it’s indescribable

Reply

I love stuffing too! And cranberry sauce. I have to have those two things.

This is my first year not having Thanksgiving with all my family in NY…we will be here in Colorado this year with a few family members and some friends.

My sisters are both older – 6 and 8 years.

Reply

Love Brook’s outfit! I agree, Target clothing is the best :-). I’m glad you got to have a pre-Thanksgiving Thanksgiving with your family.

I’m with you, stuffing is glorious and my family goes all out. I can’t watch them make it because then I might not want to eat it (you should see the amount of butter that goes in there!!!).

My brother is 4 years older than me.

Reply

One year for Thanksgiving, I made a huge pot of chili and jalapeno cornbread. Best Thanksgiving ever.

We are having Thanksgiving at my parents house thouse year.

Looks like quite the feast! Those brownies look delicious!

My siblings and I have 5 years between each other — I’m in the middle and my brother is 5 years older & my sister is 5 years younger :)

I love all the fashion in your post! This year I will be celebrating at both my husbands family house and my mom’s side of the family at her sisters house! Lots of travel!
Turkey and homemade cranberry sauce!
Eggs with cheese, turkey sandwich with hot peppers and apples.
18 months and 5 years lol.

I am bummed you won’t get to spend Thanksgiving with Brooke, but I am sure she is thrilled to have an extended holiday starting this weekend with you! Who wouldn’t love a whole week of Thanksgiving!

I have one pricey purse (around the range of yours) and I have worn it for every possible occasion for almost 2 years now. I don’t even feel tempted by other purses since I bought it. I don’t buy a lot of investment clothes, but I think purses are worth splurging on every few years if you can!

The picture of Brooke and your niece is a heart melter for sure! I love the way she is looking at Brooke:) You must have a terrific family!

I’m celebrating thanksgiving dinner with my boyfriend this year for the first time

I love your clothes! Maybe you could just be a professional shopper for me?
My girl woke up grumpy from her nap yesterday, too. It must have been a thing!
My siblings and I are all about 5 yrs apart..there are 4 of us.

Reply

my husband and i are at home (away from our parents/families) this year for thanksgiving, so we made sure to invite our “second family” of friends here in DC over for a friendsgiving over the weekend. on the actual day of thanksgiving, i think we are going out for chinese food!

Reply

I know I’m in the minority on this one, but I freaking LOVE green bean casserole! I add quinoa to keep my pooper happy (what, we’re all runners, we can talk about that, right??).

My older brother and I are 12 years apart. We don’t talk about poop. He’s not a runner.

Reply

Wow, your parents really spread you guys out! Mine are 2.5, 4 and 5.5 years younger. My husband and I have already celebrated Thanksgiving twice (Saturday and Sunday) and still have two more to go to this week!!! I’m most looking forward to my mom’s squash rolls!

Reply

I will be spending thanksgiving the way god intended: stuck with family I don’t really want to in a house that’s too warm, with food that is inedible, and forced to wear something that doesn’t have an elastic waist.

Now that I have an office job, I firmly believe all holidays should be celebrated in cozy, comfy pajamas.

Reply

Celebrating at home! Love home <3
My sister is two years older than me and my best friend!!
Fave thankgiving food is probably sweet potatoes ((although I have those on the regular anyways ;) )

Reply

I will be spending the first half of thanksgiving at my house, then the second half of the day with my boyfriend’s family at his aunt’s house, then on Friday going out to dinner with with grandma. Totally looking forward to the dessert :D! My Sunday dinner was french toast, then I had a pineapple bacon sausage with crackers, ugh best dinner of my life! I am 2 years apart from my brother, but it’s more like 3 because his birthday is so early in the year and mine is so far.

Reply

I am most looking forward to every carb related item there is…potatoes, stuffing, corn, bread…yeah, the good stuff. My brother and I are 3.5 years apart. Love having an older brother :) Happy early Thanksgiving, looks like your first one was a great one!

Hey Janae! Guess what’s going in my crockpot today?? Your cream cheese chicken chili! I lovelove that recipe :)

We are going to my daughter’s house for Thanksgiving. This is her second year doing Turkey Day.

We call stuffing “filling” here in PA Dutch country…looking forward to my Mom’s amazing filling.

My bro and I are almost 3 years apart. We are both adopted <3 <3 <3

My husband and I are going to have a low key Thanksgiving here at our house. We were going to go home but due to some unforeseen circumstances we are gonna hang here – and I am OK with that! We usually skype with the family!

I love that bag!!! I have never spent so much on a bag before though, and probably never will. I am still carrying my diaper bag around, but feel like it’s almost time to retire that thing.

We are spending Thanksgiving with our golf partners. It’s odd because my sister lives less than a mile from us but she always goes to her in-laws and although I spend a lot of time with them too – I don’t really enjoy Thanksgiving with them because they don’t do a traditional sit-down meal. I’m picky about Thanksgiving traditions.

My Sunday night dinner was Turkey Pastelon from SkinnyTaste – super yummy!!! And I am looking forward to a baked corn dish recipe that I always make (my grandma’s recipe).

And I am the middle child – my older sister is 21 months older than me and my younger sister is four years younger than me. I have been close to both of them throughout my life but am now probably slightly closer to my younger sister since she lives down the street and my older sister lives across the continent.

Reply

We are heading to New Jersey for Thanksgiving! Can’t wait… it’s my favorite. I’m looking forward to the pies… pumpkin, blueberry, banana cream with chocolate… all of them!

Last night I (seriously) had Honey Nut Cheerios and a pear for dinner. Pathetic!

My brother is 18 months older than me, then my middle sister is 3 years younger than me, and the youngest is 18 months younger than her! We are 30, 29, 26, and 25!

Her top knot is so cute- she looks so grown up with it. Tell her to slow down :)
Love her cute outfit & YOURS too! That bag..ahh! I die.
So glad you were able to have a ‘pre’ Thanksgiving together <3

This is the first year our family’s T-giving celebration will not be at my Grandma’s house. I have spent the last 30 Thanksgivings at my Grandma’s house but this year it will be at my cousins because there is more room… and A LOT more of us!

You have the sweetest, bestest family my friend!!! luv you bunches! :) xo

So much talk of Thanksgiving around the blogworld today — makes me sad that us Canadians celebrated over a month ago! I may just have to cook up a Thanksgiving-esque dinner this week so I don’t feel left out. And amen to gorgeous bags… I have a serious weakness for nice handbags, and I can justify the high prices because we’re basically attached at the hip ;)

PS – I could really go for a bowl of taco soup right now…

Reply

I’m a believer in retail therapy! And yes – Target really does have some of the cutest kids’ clothes! Little Brooke is always stylin’ just like her mama.

Looks like a fun family-filled day! Those are the best. :) Good food is always a plus too!

We already celebrated Thanksgiving twice when we were in AZ visiting family last week, and we still have two more Thanksgivings this week! I’m certainly not complaining. My favorite Thanksgiving food is stuffing, mashed potatoes, turkey, and gravy all in one bite!

Reply

We will be at my sis’s house this year for T-day :)
I am most looking forward to my sandwich concoction of a roll, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and turkey.
My Sunday night dinner was actually an easier version of taco soup :) Love.it.
I am 2 years, 16 years, 17 years, and 18 years apart from my siblings – and we’re all from the same parents ;)

Reply

We are celebrating Thanksgiving in NYC this year. I’m a little bummed about not getting to enjoy my mom’s cooking because I love her stuffing and casseroles, but I’m so excited to watch the Macy’s Day parade live.
My Sunday night dinner was a homemade tomato and tortellini soup. Warm and delicious.

And dropping a lot of money on a bag is (almost) always a good idea! :) I’ve purchased a few ‘pick me up bags’…and some ‘pick me up shoes’ and I don’t regret a one of them!

Reply

Wow, Brooke & your niece really are twins! Its uncanny lol

Glad you guys had a great early Thanksgiving dinner. I live in Canada so we had our Thanksgiving back in October, but my favourite is stuffing. Last night for dinner I had a bbq chicken salad, not nearly as exciting as your dinner.

I’m 3.5 years older than my sister. We used to fight over typical sister things when we were kids, like borrowing each others clothes, etc. without asking, but now we’re really close.

Reply

My siblings are all about 2 yrs. apart. 5 0f us.

Sunday dinner–mashed potatoes, corn, crockpot chicken.

More importantly, dessert last night was Great Wall cake from PF Chang’s.

Love Roasted Sweet Potatoes w/ butter and brown sugar.

My brother and I are 17 months apart and I love it! I actually am not a fan of Thanksgiving food, but I love the desserts you had at yours :) I would say I look forward to the rolls haha so lame, I know.

Brooke’s outfit is adorable – Target does have the cutest little girl clothes. Can’t say the same for the boys but really, I never found too many outfits for my son that were all that adorable like one can find for girls… I will be in Manhattan with the fam for Thanksgiving at my aunt’s house. My son will be with his dad – it is actually “my” year but I always let him go where and when he wants and I just sorta knew he would want to be at his grandmother’s house with his dad and she really does make an awesome Thanksgiving. I will be looking forward to the sweet potatoes and stuffing!

My heart aches for you when I think of all the hardship you went through this year, and looking at these pictures also makes my heart oh so happy for you. You have a truly amazing, beautiful, wonderful family. Truly, truly. I sincerely hope that’s what my kids’ lives look like when they’re grown.

I actually only want dessert.
We celebrated Thanksgiving with my sister’s family with past weekend, and although I like Thanksgiving food, once I have it, I am over it……..Thursday is just a tad too soon for it to be a repeat meal.

Sunday dinner was taco salads.

Reply

That cornbread looks amazing!

We are celebrating Thanksgiving night. I have to work that day and get off late, so the family is holding up dinner until I get home.

Reply

whaaaat janae my mom makes that exact same taco soup! except sometimes we use rotisserie chicken instead of ground beef. girl i thought that was just like something my mom made up and called ‘taco soup’ just because it has taco seasoning in it hahaha.

i bet our moms would be buds.

Reply

I totally agree. Spending more money on things you use every day is totally worth it. Also, when you get tired of that purse, feel free to send it my way. I love it! Anything MK is adorable. And that taco soup and cornbread look delicious! I hope you have a great Thanksgiving even though you don’t get to spend it with Brooke. You’ve got a lot to be thankful for! :-)

My older brother is 2 years older than me, and my younger brother is 4 years younger! I like the 2 year age difference better because I feel like we’re more on the same page, and I didn’t see my little brother as much as he got older because I left for college when he was 14!

I almost bought that skirt for my little, but I wanted it in black and they were sold out of 12mo. Bummer.

We’ll be celebrating Thanksgiving at home until late afternoon and then we’ll be heading to our remote cabin for a few days of ATV riding and adventures.

I cannot wait for the Turkey, it is by far my most favorite thing.

Last night we had spaghetti and meatballs for dinner and it was lovely.

For the first time ever I will be preparing Thanksgiving dinner at my own home! It’s just me, my husband, the in-laws and the baby so we’re keeping it very simple. We are having my husband’s family over on Thanksgiving and some friends will be visiting from WI – 13 total! My husband has everything finely tuned in the kitchen and the turkey fryer all set up and ready to go. I have a 4 mile race that morning for which I get a free bottle of Sangria so I think we’ve got a pretty good deal! I most certainly run for alcohol – especially when it’s free ;). I’m looking forward to spinache casserole and gluten free stuffing. I just recently figured out that gluten and I aren’t getting along and my husband has been awesome in looking up recipes for Thanksgiving and changes he can make for me.

My folks are visiting my brother in TX this year. We are 3 years apart.

When I went through my divorce I didn’t spend a lot of money on one thing but instead I spent it on a ton of little things. I kinda wish I had bought a sweet bag and some boots! I loved your line “and it did… and it still does.” Well-said!

I made spaghetti and garlic bread last night. I honestly ate about 1/2 lb. of spaghetti and 3 pieces of garlic bread. Apparently I thought that my easy 8 miler this morning required carb loading.
Stuffing is my favorite part of Thanksgiving too. We are heading to my mom’s… less than a mile away. Cornbread casserole and green bean casserole are what I’m in charge of. Easy peasy!
Happy Monday!!

Hi janae! i just wanted to wish you a happy real and fake thanksgiving! I LOVE your purse and totally agree- there’s nothing wrong with seeking something out that you love and using it to its fullest extent :)
And i just LOVE all of Brooke’s lil outfits! She is such a cutie.
Just did Cassey’s Pop Pilates videos on youtube- do you like those? They are super fun. I wonder if teenagers would like that kind of thing because it’s very uplifting and Cassey talks about being “strong not skinny” which is such an essential message! Anyway I know you have mentioned speaking to girl’s groups for running so I thought someone may want a recommendation like that.

My sunday night dinner was leftovers from an indulgent weekend with the bf! We went to an amazing french restaurant saturday night and I had the lamb. SO GOOD.

My siblings are 1.5, 4, 6, and 16 years younger. Mom said when she came home with no. 4, she looked down and saw four kids under the age of 6 and said “Oh crap.”

I’m abroad. We usually host Thanksgiving for a few expat friends in our tiny apartment, but we are moving back to the US in less than a month, so things are just too chaotic to do it this year. :( My work is doing a thing though, and I’m going to a carolling thing on Friday (obviously the day after Thanksgiving is the first day to celebrate Christmas. . .).

Love your bag! I know what you mean about spending money on a quality bag! I have bought a couple of Petunia Picklebottom bags since having kids, and I love them so much I could cuddle them to sleep!

I usually look forward to the pies at Thanksgiving because we don’t do the typical apple and pumpkin (much to my husband’s dismay). We go for the gold with the French Silk pie from Village Inn! If you haven’t tried it, you MUST on Thursday! Mind blown. :)

I’ll be making the mashed potatoes this year (for the first time in my life), so I really hope nobody is looking forward to them the most….pressure! :)

I’m the oldest of 5 kids in 6.5 years….my parents are crazy! :) My kiddos are about 3.5 years apart and I think it might be longer before the next wee one rolls around. We’ll see :)

I celebrate gratitude every single day of the year, but we are going to my BIL’s this Thursday to have Thanksgiving dinner with family. No turkey…they’re doing a BBQ. Since my kids finally love turkey and all the traditional Thanksgiving stuff, we will be doing that at our house on Saturday, I think…if I can manage to prep the turkey and get it in the oven at the right time! lol Last year that was an issue :P

When my grandparents were still around we always had ravioli at Thanksgiving. I think I need to resurrect that tradition :) I love stuffing…which is a real GF challenge. I like the “regular” kind that is basically soggy, buttery, spiced bread with some carmelized-ish onions and celery. NO NUTS.

Sunday dinner for me was popcorn at Catching Fire :)

I didn’t realize you were SUCH the baby! Sadly, I have no siblings…so I made up for it. In our blended family there is a 29-year spread, oldest to youngest. The spacing goes like this: 18 mos, 4 years, 16 mos, 4 years, 14 mos, 8 years, 2.7 years, 3 years and 4 years. (Lots of kids makes it super confusing…they are 33, 32, 28, 27, 23, 22, 14, 11, 8 and 4).

That pout face is fantastic. :)

We are having Thanksgiving with my husband’s family on the actual holiday (his mom’s side), then we’ll have T-day #2 at my mom’s on Friday with my stepson and a bunch of mom’s friends, and then T-day #3 with husband’s dad’s side on Saturday. I will probably explode from food at some point.

Ditto on the stuffing. It’s the best.

Last night my husband was watching football at a friend’s house so I hung with my mom and we ordered pizza and caesar salads – delicious!

Reply

This year, I’ll be at my Dad’s again. :) We welcome any “orphans” that need some turkey meat and stuffing.

Speaking of stuffing – that’s the part of the meal that I love the most!!

On Sunday night, my Dad took me out to dinner at a newly reopened Italian place near his house. I had strachiatella soup, tons of bread, and shrimp diavolo. SPICY!! Oh yeah, and Baskin Robbins for dessert! ;)

I have two older brothers and we are each 18 months apart. My Mom had her hands full – especially when we all had chicken pox at the same time! :)

Happy Thanksgiving!!

My two favorite things about Thanksgiving are stuffing and mashed potatoes (clue that you are a runner – you go straight for the carbs)!! I am 3 and 6 years older than my younger sisters, 6 years younger than my brother, and 8 years younger than my older sister. I love how close we all are despite the age differences! :)

I’m celebrating Thanksgiving with a bunch of fraternity brothers… it should be interesting! I am looking forward to stuffing…and pumpkin pie. For Sunday night, I had ice cream straight out of the carton as my dinner. My brother and I are 7 years apart, my sister and I are 18 months apart. :)

I love homemade rolls!

I made cream of broccoli and red bok choy soup, roasted cauliflower, sliced tomatoes and bacon on the side. Had to have meat somewhere in the meal.

If you like stuffing, u should try the sauasage stuffing recipe from our best bites sometime. Pretty delicious.

Sister thats 15 years older, sister 13 years older, sister 5 years older, brother 16 mos older, and brother 3 years younger. I love having a big family. You always have a friend and lots o’ variety! (And drama and nonsense but hey, no one’s perfect :) )

I eat well on thanksgiving…. first step-grandparents, then mom’s, then grandma’s! I’m most looking forward to my stepgrandpa’s homemade pumpkin pie – made from his homegrown pumpkins!! Sunday dinner was cheese breadsticks. Lots of nutritional value right there:)

We’re having thanksgiving in bald head island at the beach. It’s going to be freezing, but I can’t wait to eat all those yummy foods – especially the broccoli cheese casserole:)

My siblings and I are 16 months, 2.5, 8, 11, and 13 years apart. Add to that that we’re all girls except for the youngest (poor guy).

My husband and I are celebrating Thanksgiving with our friends in Ankara, Turkey. We are hosting Thanksgiving at our house this year. I think I am most looking forward to the turkey this year. I only have 1 sister and we are 7 years apart as well!

I love Thanksgiving! This year I’ll be cooking ( a small meal) for four people. It’s my Thanksgiving debut so I need to make it good! My favorite Thanksgiving food is green bean casserole.
We are purse twins! Kind of…I have a Classic Hillier Hobo bag. It was a birthday gift from my fiancee. I felt ridiclious accepting it but it’s such an awesome bag and still looks amazing four years later. I allow myself to splurge on a few things…purses included.
Have a very happy Thanksgiving!

I love that bag too. I always have the urge to shop when I’m going through something difficult. I’m going to my aunt’s for thanksgiving. Not too far away. Difficult times make you really appreciate those who love you unconditionally & are always there.
Happy Thanksgiving!
