Nothing like a little challenge to wake you up.

I do not love it when this happens.  I swear I had my garmin plugged in all night but somehow it didn’t charge. I guess it is good to have some garminless runs every now and then.

A peaceful 10 miles in the canyon with my homie Josse.  She has the BEST stories ever.  I am always fully entertained when I run with her.

IMG 3898

We took this picture below when it first started to snow a few little flakes —->  5 minutes later it was a full on blizzard (I am just exaggerating a little bit this time).  There were points during the run where I had to close my eyes because the snow was coming so fast towards my face because of the wind (that is not an exaggeration).

I strangely loved it.  Nothing like a little challenge to wake you up.

We also saw a deer running down the path… the deer even stayed in the correct running lane the whole time.  Such a polite deer that understands running etiquette.

IMG 3900

Came home and did a few weights (three times in one week.. I know, right).

Refuelage with Alyssa at my restaurant.    Brooke was trying to catch the snow.

IMG 3920

The Cafe Rio.  I had half chicken and half pork in my salad.  Perfection.

Enter in the usual mom stuff and before I knew it it was 9 o’clock and I met up with two of my girlfriends for dinner at the tortilla bar. This was my first time here and it was incredible… the sad part about it is that it is closing in 1.5 months.  I will go as much as possible in between now and then.

The flavors in each dish were amazing.  We had an apple salad, queso and I had an avocado taco and a chicken one (I cannot for the life of me remember what it was called though… something fancy).

The avocado (with goat cheese) taco was my favorite part of the meal.

The three of us girls don’t know how to go a day without dessert so brownie sundaes and lots of talking ended things perfectly.

Enjoy every second of your Sunday!

I’m way jealous you got to hang out with Alyssa again! That sounds like a super hard run though… I can’t even imagine. The (record) high here is 85 today!

Your food photos kind of remind me of our dinner last night… the best burritos ever.

If you’re ever on the Washington coast, shout for a food rec (we have 2 in our town). The one is a tiny Mexican place with 2 tables inside (yes, 2) and about 6 outside. The food is fabulous!

We ate our burritos while Skype-ing with my sister last night. She was so impressed that her niece was a burrito fan!

Off to more clamming and making bread and muffins today!

Looks like a great time.

I am still adjusting to this 50 degree weather up here, let alone snow. I’m sure I’ll get used to it eventually…maybe it just won’t snow this year. Nice job in the snow and without a garmin. Right now I’ll need to do untimed runs for a while when I can get back to running…I’m excited to check out all the parks around here :-)

Looks like you had some delicious eats yesterday! Especially that brownie — yum!

Happy Sunday!

Wait what?! Why is it closing?

I love running in the snow too…so quiet and peaceful. That brownie sundae looks amazing. I had a homemade one last night. :-). Happy Sunday!

looks like an amazing time. I am pretty jealous of all the friends you have. I need to work on making more friends.

Reply

You could always try running in ski goggles to keep the snow out of your eyes ;) I’m not sure how I feel about running in the snow, but I’m more than willing to head out into it to snowboard.

Happy Sunday, Janae!

Have a great Sunday! I’m up early to run a half marathon this morning, wish me luck!

Hope you rock that half marathon!

It sounds like a cross between an awesome run and a super challenging one – kudos to you! :D

I brought brownie sundaes to work on Wednesday for our work lunch! I used the Ghirardelli brownie mix from Costco because it is hands down amazing!

It’s race day today and I will face down my arch enemy if the 1 hour 10k! I’m right on the cusp of breaking it, so it could go either way. Wish me luck!

Looks like a fun day! One question for you- what do you do when you have dinner plans for so much later in the day? Oftentimes that is when people can all get together to go- 8, 9pm- but by then I’m starving! Do you have any tips for how to manage that?

Reply

Oh man, that salad looks delicious!

I can’t end a day without dessert either…You should know that I only flew through Utah once and while I had a stopover there, I was convinced I was in the middle of nowhere. Now I realize how foolish and sheltered I am/was and feel the need to come back simply because it always looks like you guys have the best food!

Reply

I feel the same way about dessert… I HAVE to have something chocolate after dinner.

Your run looks fun…I haven’t had any snow storms happen yet while running here in Denver *knock on wood*.

Also, question about the Cafe Rio you go to for those amazing salads…is that the same place as “The Rio Cafe, Mexican Restaurant”? We have a few of those here and they are delicious. You cannot go and not get a margarita, its a rule.

Before I started reading your blog I had never tried a taco salad. You have converted me, and now I think about them way too much :)

Reply

I have an unbelievable craving for tacos now…off to the grocery store! Have a fun and chill Sunday!! :)

I’m so jealous that it’s already snowing there! I really love running in the snow. It seems so peaceful and cathartic. Hope you’re having a great weekend :)

Reply

Josse must be a running machine. If I had to run at your pace A) I’d collapse and die (not an exaggeration) and B) my stories would just be “ow ow ow ow ow.” Have a wonderful Sunday, Miss Janae!

Reply

We seriously better get to run together someday!

WHERE DID YOU GET THAT SHIRT?! Is it cats or dogs? Because if it’s cats I’m buying it right now.

Running in the snow is good – once you warm up! Happy Sunday Janae :) :)

Reply

It is cats! It is from a boutique here in Utah:(

Reply

Its hard to run in the cold and snow but sometimes I love it! Looks like you had a great run :) enjoy the rest of your weekend!

The snow is amazing! No snow here… No RAIN here, which we really need!

Have a lovely day

Mmmm… your posts always make me hungry for a huge salad. Yesterday when I went to the store, I got all the fixings for a cranberry almond chicken salad but forgot the lettuce!! Augh!

Reply

avocado and goat cheese is such an awesome combination!!

Reply

Dude, I didn’t know you could have both meats in your salad at Cafe Rio?! I may have to try that – I always get their sweet pork salad – it’s the best!

I tried running outside on Friday – and the snow was coming down like yours was yesterday (we didn’t get the snow they predicted on Saturday) – I only did 3 miles outside on Friday until I had to stop because I couldn’t see/keep my eyes open with the snow coming down at an angle. I know that some people can run through snow (dry snow, I can, but wet snow, no) but it got to the point where I was afraid of running into a car! Should be better today – clear as day!

Have a great sunday!

Looks like a fun run even though it was a challenge. I strangely miss running in the snow in Utah. :)

And why is Tortilla Bar going to be closing?? We went there when it first opened and it was amazing. I remember always seeing it packed after that when we would drive by. Sad :(

Reply

It is so sad… They said it is because they want to try something new!

Reply

That happens sometimes when I plug in my garmin- urgh- so annoying!!

Reply

I LOVE snow. I am endlessly jealous of your beautiful, nature filled runs. It is 82 today. That does NOT get one in the holiday spirit!

Reply

SOOO fun to see you!! We need to do this more often :) Love you girl!

I was baking with one of my friends yesterday afternoon when it started snowing.. a little dusting at first and then a full on blizzard! Seems like Utah and Montana share weather patterns ;)

Dessert looks deliscious!

Random question. My brother wants compression socks for Christmas. He’s a ‘new’ runner and is trying to build mileage (and get in shape). I’m struggling to find what I think are legit compression socks. Any recommendations???? Or better yet, what are some must have items for someone who has just started out with running?? That might be a fun post for you (if you haven’t done that already:) thank you!!!

Reply

I will have to do that post!!! I highly recommend PRO Compression!!!!

Alyssa is one of my all time favorites… I found her early on in my “blogging life” and she is such a sweet friend.

Have a great Sunday!

Reply

I dunno …looks like BROOKE is the one doing weights ;-) You need to teach her how to take pics so there’s #proof that you did weights, too!

Reply

avocado tacos? sounds like heaven inside a tortilla :)

Reply

I’m video chatting with Alyssa right now!!! You’ll have to join us next time :) I’m trying to come out for the retreat in St. George so we’ll have to all hit up Cafe Rio together!

Snow? Really? It’s the mid 80’s here and I can’t even remember what snow feels like (I haven’t seen it in many years), but it was great seeing your pictures. It really is pretty. Those tacos look amazing and I love goat cheese, it is my all time favorite!

Reply

Wow that snow looks so pretty ! Great running! Re: the dying Garmin..I’ve been having the same problem. I leave it on the charger sometimes longer than it needs and I notice when I go to use it (not daily, forced to do some TM runs bc of baby) it’ll have a low battery. Makes NO SENSE. But I have noticed on occasion if it’s not connected to charger properly and perfectly it’ll dislodge a little and turn the watch on? hence the batt will die. Or I’m just completely unlucky. I check it like crazy now and as soon as the charging is done I remove and make sure it’s turned off. Sorry for long winded post but the Garmin thing drives me nuts!

Reply

after seeing how much fun you are having on your run… it kinda makes me miss cold weather. i did not think i would miss fall and winter when i moved to phoenix, but i think after seeing your photos i kinda do miss it!
and the same thing happened to me and my garmin this week. it was charging all night and when i headed out for my run, there was no battery life yet. i agree a run here and there without the garmin is kinda nice!

Reply

That is so cool that you saw a deer!!! I love them :) And so funny what you said- such a polite deer ;) That cafe rio salad looks amazing and goat cheese and avo taco?! Um, yum.

xo

Reply

No joke that same thing happened to me yesterday. I went to grab my Garmin for 9 miles and it was only half charged after I knew I charged it the night before! Thankfully it held strong and didn’t die until I’d finished my run. So frustrating though. Glad you still has a good run!

Reply

I am so jealous that it is snowing there! I love running in the now the few times a year that I get to (2-4 times!).

Reply

I am strangely looking forward to running in snow! I wish somehow it could be both sunny and peacefully snowing at the same time… I generally hate running Garmin-less too (although mine shows far slower miles than yours does!) but I admit once in a while it’s kinda nice to be untethered. Hope your Sunday is going swimmingly.

On the other side of the spectrum, it’s been 90F here in Texas. It’s so weird to me that we’re going through different challenges when it comes to running! Love those snow pics though! You are a trooper. I’m so Texan that snow would definitely make me have second thoughts about running! I doubt I’d ever get completely warm again!

Hi Janae! Have you read the article about running in the Wall Street Journal? I’d love to hear your thoughts on it! I linked to the article as well as a HILARIOUS counter argument from Runner’s World :) happy sunday!

I went to Cafe Rio for the first time today. Drove over 100 miles to Wenatchee, WA and met my stepdad for lunch. I had the vegetarian salad—so good! We played in the snow on the way home. Great day and fabulous lunch.

Reply

That makes me so so happy! It is the absolute best:) glad you got to try it!

Reply

I had no idea you could go halvsies on Cafe Rio salads!! Might have to try that next time…although I don’t know if I could ever get anything but all pork :)
I can’t believe your car said 33 degrees on it. I was just talking about how cold it is outside & checked the temp: 53 degrees. Ohhh California!

Your run sounds so fun. I wish I had more people around here to run with!!

I seriously love long runs with people who tell fun stories. It makes the miles just fly by.

Sounds like a pretty awesome weekend :) I am a southern girl so I don’t know if I’d run in the snow or not. I kind of have a “no running below freezing” rule! That salad made me hungry.

Avocado and goat cheese taco? That sounds too good to be true!

Hey girl! I love your little running coat, I think you mentioned where you got it but I don’t remember, can you remind me? Thanks! You’re the best. :)

Thank you!!! It is from brooks! Hope you are having an amazing night!

I love running in the snow. Everything so peaceful and serene…I often do my cool down stretches outside while taking it all in. <3

My Garmin charger acts up sometimes, too. I don't understand the whole clamp in the right spot. Even when I have the teeth lined up with the holes, it takes a few tries to start charging. It's a good thing I have my routes measured, and I'm used to going Garminless up until recently anyway.
