I am now one of ‘those’ people.

Running tip of the day:  Don’t run 24 miles within a 16 hour time period and then jump into a 15 passenger van for 6 hours to drive home.  Just trust me on this one.

We finished.  I loved it.  I am now one of those ‘Ragnar 4 Life’ people that talk about Ragnar like it was the best vacation ever (only runners understand how you could call running/not showering/driving around in a van/not sleeping can be called a vacation).

We got home in the middle of the night and my brain is not currently working properly so I will have the recap of the race post up later.

Until then…

How we ate after the race was over when we were all starving after surviving off of bagels and fruit snacks for the previous 30 hours.

Pizza.  Pizza.  Domino’s, I haven’t had you for a while but you are delicious.

IMG 3497

After hanging out at the finish line for a while we went to one of our teammates parent’s house for the best burgers and grilled veggies in Nevada.  We all inhaled these babies.  We also got to take showers at their house and get into comfy clothes for our trip home.

IMG 3511

They also had homemade peach pie and ice cream waiting for us.

IMG 3512

And on the drive home I convinced my team that a DQ stop at 10 pm for S’mores blizzards (and french fries because after all of that sweating we needed to replenish our sodium) was necessary.

My fave delivery pizza is pizza pizza (Canadian place).

Rest up!!

Congrats on completing your first Ragnar (aka the best run-cation!). Favorite type of pie is pumpkin and I plan to indulge after a Turkey Trot Challenge on Thanksgiving! And yes, I plan my vacations around running races :) Running races is the best way to see a new place and we runners get different perspectives.

What a “vacation”! Only a die hard runner could appreciate a trip like that! It sounds like crazy fun though! I bet the food tasted that much better after all that running!! Favorite delivery pizza is Dominos and I love cherry pie.

Reply

I always run on vacations, and usually we plan our family vacations around a race so that my siblings and I can all race together!
Favorite pie: coconut cream! That peach pie looks amazing though!!!

Reply

Not at all surprised that you loved it :D And don’t hate me, but I don’t -love- pie. It’s alright, but if given the choice between pie or something like cookies, cake, or muffins, I’ll always go for the later. Happy Sunday!

Reply

Really any kind of pie- warm with ice cream is my favorite, but pie on it’s on has to be chocolate. That meal at your teammates parents house looks amazing! What a nice treat!! Followed by blizzards and french fries? Perfect. Do you dip your fries into your shakes? So good. And yes I usually incorporate running or at least some kind of fitness into my vacations (well since I’ve been living a more active lifestyle). Can’t wait to read your recap of the race (after you get home, hug your #1 girl for an hour, and rest!)

I love chocolate pecan pie! And I definitely prefer Papa Johns over Dominos. I am so bad about running/working out on vacations. I tend to get so lazy!

Reply

You’re not the only one who pulls stunts like that. When I ran Richmond, we drove home right after, and with traffic and a restroom/dinner stop, that seven-hour trip turned into 10 hours. I figured I was going to be hurting regardless, so why not just head home? It was worth it to sleep in my own bed. :-)

Dutch apple is my favorite, and Rubinos in the DC area is the best pizza I’ve had thus far. They really need to open one in my neck of the woods.

As I plan my 2014 race schedule, I’ll be making mini-vacations out of those trips because there will be more traveling involved. Gotta make the most of it! :-)

Looked like a ton of fun!

Glad you had fun! I’d love to do a Ragnar Relay race.

Reply

Congrats!!!! Next weekend we are headed to Vegas for Rock n Roll half marathon so our family vacation this year is definitely running related. Can’t wait!

Reply

Congrats on doing Ragnar! I can’t wait to read your recap! Your teammate’s parents were so nice to feed you and give you hot showers!

I’m an apple pie kind of girl and love Paisano’s Pizza for delivery. It’s delicious!

We always run when we’re on vacation. We planned our vacation around running Big Sur one year. That was fun!

Reply

Ahhhhh congrats!!!!! That is so awesome; what a great experience.

I love apple pie with a crumble topping (my mom makes one called fish-market apple pie that is soooo good!). Always run on vacas- it’s the best way to see a new city! Hmmm we are way rural and have almost no delivery places near us, so I get to enjoy funky craft pizza instead. Yum! I will, however, always have a soft spot for pizza hut’s buttery crust, stuffed or plain. Congrats again! xx

Reply

I’m not the biggest pie person, but lemon meringue or chocolate cream are always my favourite options!

Reply

Oh, don’t hate me, but I don’t like pie. I just like cake way too much to give pie a spot in my dessert roaster.

Sometimes we plan vacations around races. I’m guessing more and more in the future because I’m fairly new at competitive running.

I’m hoping to run a Ragnar (or a relay) this spring in the Rockies.

Reply

yay for ragnar! i LOVED it so much i just signed up for an ultra. i imagine you’ll do one of those someday too. my husband and i did ragnar together this year and it was his first race. definitely an experience to remember!

For Pie- any made by one of my brothers-in-law (I have 5). Specifically the one who won the Navy’s top chef award two years in a row.

For Pizza- Any from The Pie. Utah folks, will you please enjoy some for me! Thanks!

There is a restaurant here (in Florida) that serves a Chocolate pie topped with vanilla ice cream and reeses pb cups, and it is my all time favorite. You really should come here and I will take you there and buy you one because it really is that good.
Not a fan of most of the delivery pizza places but Costco has the absolute best carry out pizza in their deli and it’s very reasonable and good. (big Costco fan)
I don’t plan my vacations around races but I do look for races where I plan on vacationing and if possible, I enter them. I also do run on vacation and I try very hard NOT to stray from my normal running schedule because otherwise I get all cray and my family hides from me.

Food looks deliscious!

Reply

I really want to do one of these one day.

Reply

We rarely order pizza, but when we do it’s from Dominos — so good!

Glad you had a fun time! Your post running meal looks delicious!

Reply

I’m curious to see how long it’ll take you to recoup from this one ;)
I pretty much like most fruit pies and pumpkin.
I almost always run on vacation but haven’t planned many vacations around running, but this may soon change.
I love Papa Murphey’s Hawaiian BBQ with jalapeños. It’s pretty amazing.

Reply

apple pie! YUM so so good!

Reply

PEACH PIE omg yum!! I really like any pie. Especially warm with ice cream. I liked the old Dominos- I don’t really like it anymore! Smores blizzards are my fav – they have a hint of coffee! Super excited for the recap!!

Reply

Great job!! Sounds like a blast.

Favorite Pie? Pumpkin with a cheesecake layer. Does it still fall in the Pie category then?

Favorite Pizza? Hawaiian with black Olives and mushrooms. Creepy combination-but I learned that no one else ever eats it-so I don’t have to share!

Reply

Congrats on Ragnar. Several of my friends have done Utah Ragnar, so it’s neat to see Vegas and looks like you guys had a great time. Cherry cream cheese pie and coconut cream is my favorite and love some Papa John’s.

Reply

Blackberry or boysenberry! :)

Running on vacation is actually one of my favorite things. I love to discover new trails and sight-see while running.

Reply

YAY! I’m so glad you enjoyed Ragnar. You are one of “those” people…. how much fun is it to be sweaty and slightly delirious in a van with old or brand new friends???

Now you should run Cascade Lakes Relay with us (Electric Dream Machine) in Oregon this year :)

I love running on vacation, particularly trail running.

Pie?! I don’t discriminate, I love all pie.

Reply

So glad u had a great time and happy u made it home safely. That peach pie looks so yummy right now.
Enjoy your rest day and little Brooke!
Can’t wait to hear details about the race.

Reply

Fantastic- sounds like so much fun!

Reply

I just want to go out to eat with you…forget all that running stuff. HA!

Hubs and I just shared a Smore’s Blizzard last night ~ to end our date night ~ that was my first taste of one and I think the Pumpkin Pie is still my favorite. ;-)

Reply

Favorite pie is apple and pumpkin.
I’m definitely a Papa Johns girl for the well-known chains. But there’s a place here in Tucson called Mama’s Pizza that honestly has the best pizza you’ll ever taste…and I’ve been to Italy. We had family visit a few months ago from VA and their quote was “this is the best pizza I have ever had in my life.” It’s that good.
For running on vacations, I tend to just search for hotels for fitness rooms. :)

Reply

Favorite delivery pizza is DEFINITELY Papa Johns with the garlic dipping sauce! I die. Favorite pie is probably shoo-fly pie with a chocolate bottom or a coconut cream pie! I’m so happy you had a great time at your first Ragnar and you’re home safe and sound! Enjoy your Sunday!

Reply

Papa John’s hands down. Then Domino’s. Then Pizza Hut.

And I love DQ blizzards. My fave is triple chocolate explosion.

Sounds like you made great memories.

Reply

PUMPKIN pie!!! But only my mom’s recipe- it’s the best! I don’t like delivery pizza (gasp!) but I love homemade cheese pizza!

Reply

i’m not at all surprised that you loved ragnar! i can’t wait to read your full recap – looks like a blast! :)

i usually pack my running clothes/shoes on vacations, so i can either walk or run around the area. my favorite vacation run was along the beach in maui last year – most beautiful run i’ve ever done :)

my absolute favorite pie is my grandma’s apple pie. pumpkin pie is also really good, too!

Reply

All sounds pretty great to me! I would love to do a Ragnar kind a relay sometime with my running friends back home. Must be a blast!

And the food, oh all the food. I can only imagine how great those s’mores must have tasted after 26 miles and too little sleep ;)

Reply

Olliliberry pie from Avila Valley Barn u must try! I like Me and Eds cause it’s down the street…I’m seriously gonna plan a mini vacation around a race now…so fun! And people who open their home up like that are true angels. Love that.

Reply

Favorite pie: Apple! Since my vacations are usually traveling home to North Dakota – I always run because it’s home!

Favorite pizza? Papa John’s. Hands down. Softest crust! Best pizza place bread? Little Caesar’s cheesy bread (I think!)

Congrats on Ragnar! Now you are going to be one of the billion of cars that I see driving around Utah that have a Ragnar sticker on their window! Just don’t do what I saw one gal here in Logan do, don’t hang your Ragnar medal from your rearview mirror. One – too heavy for your mirror – that’s just — no. 2) You’re asking for someone to steal it – just don’t do it. :)

Reply

How can you choose a favorite type of pie!?! I would have to say key lime pie probably! I just don’t know how I can choose…I also LOVE all fruit pies, peanut butter pie, chocolate chip pie..oh the endless options!!

Reply

That pie looks awesome! My favorite is my sister’s apple pie. I do run on vacations. I have taken solo trips to run races, but not family trips.
Blizzards and Ragnar must go together we had the after finishing NWP.

Reply

Pecan pie is my favorite:) so good! Glad you had fun and can’t wait to read about it!

Reply

Congrats! I haven’t had Domino’s in years but it was good. My son always wonders why I won’t order it, I just feel like we live in NY, there’s an awesome pizza place on every corner. But I really should get him Domino’s just once to experience it lol…I don’t always plan a trip around races but lately I have been doing so..looking into the Zooma half at the Ritz in FL – only problem is, to go to FL in January, it should be warmer than 60 degrees to make it worth it – this location is pretty far north.

Reply

CONGRATS!! The Hood to Coast relay was my favorite race I’ve ever done-love the feel of turning a usually solo sport into a team one. :)

Reply

So impressive you go girl!

Reply

Yum I want a peach pie now!! Glad you had a blast!! It sounds like a crazy time! My fave pie is apple :) It’s classic.

xo

Reply

Pumpkin pie is the only kind of pie I like. But I so do love it!
Yes, I agree with you. Only a runner would call a 24 hour relay the best vacation ever. Simply the best all around experience.
I always run on vacation no matter where I go. I tend to overindulge heavily while vacationing so running is a must for my sanity. It doesn’t fix all of the bad food/beverages but helps a little bit.

Reply

This makes me so excited! I’m doing a relay in SC in March and I can’t wait!

Reply

I don’t really like pie all that much, but it would either have to be french silk or dutch apple. I have never planned a vacation around running, but always run on vacation…except when we went to Disney and we were going from 7 am till 10 or 11 pm with a 5 and a 7 year old! I was too dead tired to run :)!

Reply

I love too many pies to choose just one–pumpkin, cherry, lemon meringue, rhubarb!

We honestly don’t get delivery pizza very much, we either get take n bake, or I cook it at home, or when we want to splurge we pick up from this great little Italian ny style local pizzeria, yum!

I do like to run on vacations, really depends on where we’re going. I’m signed up for my first full in March in LA, so that will be a fun getaway for the whole family.

I can’t wait to read your whole recap, a Ragnar race is on my list of to-dos!

Reply

Congrats on your first Ragnar! I understand what you mean by “4 life.”

Domino’s is my favorite delivery, but we rarely order it. I make and freeze large batches of pizza dough, so it’s so quick and easy to make pizza at home.

Reply

I always run on vacation…its a great way to explore! And my husband and I kind of planned our honeymoon around running the Houston marathon (we planned a 3 day layover in Houston on our way to Hawaii).

Reply

I can’t wait to do a Ragnar, it is definitely on my Bucket List to do one, or two, or three… :)

Favorite Pie is a Sea Salted Caramel Apple Pie I have made for a few years now. So delicious!

I really like Papa Johns pizza for delivery but you can’t beat a traditional Italian Pie. We have one place here that makes them and it has to be eaten immediately upon ordering at the restaurant to get the ultimate experience.

I have started to secretly plan some of our vacations around races. Not sure everyone would be too happy with that. Oh well!

Reply

Don’t you just love how you can eat after running so much!?! I’m not a huge pie person but my sister does make a delicious Oreo Pudding Pie that is amazing in the summer!!

Reply

I actually went to my grandma’s house today with my sister and learned how to make her amazing homemade pie! My sis made cherry and I made apple :) About to try a slice and I CAN’T WAIT! My favorite delivery pizza is Jets. I think it might only be a Michigan thing but it is THE BEST! So if you’re ever in the mitten you gotta try it. That race looks awesome and I can’t wait for the recap. I might be crazy enough to try it sometime…

Reply

Can’t wait to hear the full story! I’ve always wanted the inside scoop on what a Ragnar is like.

Cherry pie. Always and forever. With ice cream, of course.

Reply

So far I’ve only done two halves and both were out of town so they were vacations in themselves :) I love the gluten free pizza from a place in Charlotte called Fuel

Reply

Congratulations!! The shower must have felt heaveny after all of that – those types of experiences always make me appreciate the small things in life :)

Apricot or raspberry pie – all the way. I love the tartness!

Favourite delivery pizza – Zeps!

Reply

Umm, I’m super jealous that your Dairy Queens still have the Smores blizzard – I tried to order one here a month ago and they said they didn’t have it anymore because it was a special.

There’s no way I could pick a favorite pie but at this very moment I want some pumpkin pie with cool whip. And my favorite delivery pizza is a small chain over here in WI called Glass Nickel. It is incredibly delicious, especially the fetalicious :).

Reply

I know we have GREAT ice cream near our apartment, but every time I see DQ on here I am convinced that I NEED it!

Congrats on finishing! :)

Reply

Of course you loved it. I don’t understand why you never explored this side of running/racing before. I can imagine you to be an exceptional vanmate. So so so glad you had a great time…and so glad you had a royal FEAST at the end. I need a towel now…I’m drooling :/

Reply

I’ve never planned a vacation around a race, but I have found races to run while on vacation. I also usually do run on vacation, just less than I would during a normal week.

Reply

Congratulations!! So glad you had a great time! Now you got me wanting to do a relay!!

I love apple pie!! And sweet potato pie… and pumpkin. lol oh! and chocolate cream pie!

I do usually run on vacations if it works out. I have only done one race around a vacation – Chicago Marathon & it was my favorite race!!

Reply

Apple pie or strawberry rhubarb are my favorites. and with ice cream.
I haven’t had delivery pizza in awhile- the whole not eating gluten thing :(
