“Sitting is sad. Running is happy”

Friday:  early morning run with my girl Josse.  We went running in a new area and that always makes life way more exciting.  I did a total of 8.15 miles with an average pace of 8:20.  Yesterday was my longest run since the 1/2 marathon a week ago and my legs are finally beginning to feel normal again.   I am telling myself that it is a good thing that it took me so long to recover because that means I really pushed myself outside of my comfort zone in the race.

PS I love this!!! One of their slogans:  ‘Sitting is sad.  Running is happy.’    Agreed.

IMG 3119

1. First lunch:  Can of vegetable soup (WHY does it say each can contains two servings?  Why do I ever think that one can will fill me up for lunch?)

2. Second lunch:  Almond butter/jelly/banana sandwich (a meal that I will love for the rest of my life).

I went to the store while Brooke was napping to get the good stuff.  Did you know I have an exact date set up for my DC quitting day?  It is less than 3 months away.  I will need your love/support/help when I kick my favorite habit.

IMG 3125

It has been way too long since I have gone to Which Which.  I think this was Brooke’s first time eating there and I knew before we even got there that she would love it because Which Which was one of my biggest cravings when I was pregnant.

 DSC 7411

Clearly she loves that I kiss her cheeks 4 trillion times a day.

DSC 7415

And the usual nightly walk around the neighborhood.  Yes, I did wear my Uggs from 2002 so that I could wear boots that were kind of similar to Brooke’s boots.

IMG 3133

After Brooke went to bed I got to hang out with my sis, Paige and their husbands.  I am getting really good at this 5th wheel thing:)  We even had a late night stop at Dairy Queen and I went with the double fudge and cookie dough Blizzard.  Try it.

I may attempt to go to a pump class today after my run.  That would mean that I made it to 2 pump classes in one week.  Before you know it I might make strength training a regular activity in my life or something crazy like that.

I sit way too much, I’m about ready to install a stationary bike at my desk so I can pedal while I work. That was actually my Saturday morning workout – a two hour bike ride! Boring, but it feels good to sweat. The science totally backs up that Brooks slogan. Sitting is literally lethal.

No Which Which exists anywhere near me :(. What’s the best sandwich? I haven’t had a chance to experiment, so I would need suggestions.

Good luck with quitting DC! You should chronicle the process for us, because I really really need help with this, soon! It’s getting out of control.

Reply

Yes! I second this…please chronicle the DC quitting! I’ve been trying to quit for about a million years…to no success. I have to do this…my addiction is getting ridiculous! Hell, I’ll even join you in the process if you want an accountability partner? Maybe it’d help both of us?!

PS. I’m delurking to chime in about diet Coke, of all things! Ha! But I’m a runner too and love your blog.

Reply

I love that Brooks sticker!
I stand and walk all day at work, but I sit a lot at home (reading or online). I used to be a lot more active, but I’m letting myself be lazy while my injury heals. I realized that even light activity is slowing healing down (even WALKING!).
But after this is better – I’m getting that Brooks decal :)

Given my femur fracture, I’ll be doing another boring ab workout today. Poor me!

Reply

I’ve been there girl! Femur fractures are awfully hard to recover from. I fractured mine three years ago and all I can say is that a lot of swimming and aqua jogging helped!

Reply

Thanks for the encouragement! This had been going on for a long time and I’m pretty darn frustrated.

Reply

My Saturday workout is going to consist of me walking around the outlet mall for hours. I hope that counts. We are getting an early start and I didn’t want to drag my buns out of bed before that. Plus my gym is a loser and doesn’t open until 8 on Saturdays.

Reply

I just ran 3 miles….huge for me since I haven’t run that far in about 6 months after my hip issues. ;-)
But I will be working out a little later while watching my daughter and her team run the STATE CC MEET today!! So excited for her and all of the girls!

I use to be a DC junkie…for sure 1 or 2 a day…however, for months now I quit drinking all soda (except when mixed with an occasional adult liquor ;-) I can’t believe I don’t crave it or miss it….and even in the “drink” it seems so sweet to me. You will do fine I am sure!!

Reply

Good luck to your daughter!! My state meet was on the 19th.. I got 4th! :)

Reply

I try not to have too many days where I sit around too long because I find they tire me out a lot more than the days where I’m up and moving around. If I had a treadmill desk that I could work/blog at, I’d be one happy camper.

Happy Saturday, Janae.

Reply

I ate a lot of Mac and cheese when I was pregnant…and sour patch kids. Lol

I sit at a desk all day long, so I try to get up and take a walk every hour.

I haven’t run since Monday, I can’t wait to hit the pavement!

Have a great Saturday!

Reply

I craved total junk food- snack cakes like Devil Dogs and Little Debbie.

Today is the kickoff of the Holiday Meltdown Challenge and I can’t wait!

Reply

I sit a lot during the day since I work in an office. But just more reason to get my runs in before work and my triathlon trainings in after. Trying to counteract the sitting!

My favorite sandwich/sub? WEGMANS!!! They are going to rule the world someday. You just watch =P

Reply

I’m definitely more aware of when I sit more throughout the day. I get really restless, so I try to stand for part of the day. I usually have lots of walking breaks running from one place to another. Going for a longer run this morning and group core! :)

Reply

I’m pregnant right now, and I eat Panera like it’s going out of style! I literally always want it. OJ was big for me in my 1st trimester!

Reply

I have to sit at my desk most of the day but I drink lots of water so I can get up and take lots of bathroom breaks :P

This morning I’m running a 6k that starts and ends at a brewery! Then I get free beer at the end! And my mom is coming to cheer me on!!

Reply

Yes, I sit a lot at work. I really want one of those treadmill desks!!!!!
My workout today is probably going to involve a small amount of VERY easy spinning and maybe a walk. I broke my arm and banged my knee pretty bad in a bike accident last week, so I am just barely getting back into doing very small amounts of exercise.

Reply

My pregnancy craving was orange juice. I had to start every day with it – now I never drink it.

Today I’ll be going for a nice 6 mile run, by myself! no baby jogger:) I love running with my little one but it’s going to be much easier without her!

Reply

I went from a job where I was always on the move to a job where I sit all day – such a difficult adjustment!

Reply

That. Face. Brooke’s face when you are kissing her cheek is too much!

I have a desk job but can’t stand sitting all day! Everyone thinks I am weird because I prop my laptop up a few hours a day to stand, but hey, if they won’t give me a standing desk, I have to make do :)
My workout this morning was a 5 mile shake out run before a half tomorrow, wohoo!

Reply

Your Which Wich sandwich always makes me want to try them! We just had one open in this area, but it’s still a good 40 minutes away. Someday I will be in that area.

My biggest pregnancy craving with my first daughter was milk with ice. The thought of that, well milk at all, makes me ill. With my second daughter it was Kit Kat bars. Still love those!

My job has me on my feet and on the move most of the day. I love it!

Today’s workout will happen after work this afternoon. I will run!

Reply

I sit way too much during the day and always love days where I’m up and moving around! At least I sit way less than I did all summer studying for the Bar Exam! Now THAT got on my nerves!

And I agree – a whole can of vegetable soup always leaves me hungry an hour later!

Reply

I sit too much when I am working. On my days off, I barely ever sit. But I’m a nurse and even though it seems busy. There is a LOT of charting and a LOT of sitting.

Reply

I HATED sweets when I was pregnant with Noah and only wanted chips, cheeseburgers, pizza, and cheese. Chocolate made me want to throw up and it’s normally one of my main food groups haha! I also love which wich. Anything with buffalo sauce is what I normally get. I’m not a vegetarian but their black bean burger is good. Have a good weekend!

Reply

My Saturday morning workout will be the Frisky Fall Friday workout from tone it up. But I will scratch the running in lieu of the eliptical. Already ran 4 times this week, need to throw a little cross training in there.

Reply

Why is there no Which Wich in New York? I craved the total opposite of my normal cravings when I was pregnant – I am normally a sweet tooth and while I was pregnant, I didn’t want anything sweet, only wanted pizza, sandwiches and food versus dessert.

Reply

Saturday workout plans – treadmill run and stairstepper! My marathon training plan starts this Monday, so Im enjoying my last weekend of no strict plans (although I realky do love having a strict plan to follow)

Im interested, if you love diet coke, why do you want to give it up?

Reply

I work in an office so I sit way more than I’d like. Brooke’s cheeks are so cute, I understand now why old ladies want to pinch little kids cheeks, they’re just so adorable!!

My workout today will be a gym strength one bc it is a torrential downpour outside and then tomorrow I will do a long run bc its supposed to clear up outside. Have a great Saturday everyone!!

Reply

I am pregnant right now, and my cravings are lemonade and V8 juice, neither of which I drank very much before I was pregnant. So weird!

Reply

I think I’ll do some yoga this morning — I did a new strength workout on Thursday and my legs are still sore! Yoga will be about all I can handle :)

Reply

My pregnancy craving with my oldest was grape soda. With my second, it was steamed milk with vanilla, and with the youngest it was avocado. Random!

No workout today — I did a slow, easy 6 yesterday in preparation for my first half tomorrow morning. So excited/nervous!

I definitely sit more during the workweek. I’m a lawyer — typical desk job, and I don’t move around as much as I should once I land at my desk in the morning. But on the weekends, it’s non-stop running around with three busy kids. My fitbit tracks my steps, and it’s literally THOUSANDS of steps more on weekends, esp. combined with a long run!

Reply

Ooooh good luck!! :)

Reply

Thank you so much!

Reply

I just ran 7.
Oh yes, quitting the diet sodas…….I always give mine up for lent. Then last year when that wasn’t really a big deal I was so surprised, maybe I didn’t ‘t love it like I thought I did.

Reply

Next time you make that pbj/banana/jelly sandwich grill it (georhe foreman) it makes it amaaaaaazing

Run today is an easy 3 before my half tomorrow

Reply

I hate sitting! I always feel like I need to be moving. So I usually am. :) This morning I ran ten miles and just finished peanut butter and strawberry banana french toast. Sounds weird, but oh so good.

Reply

I work in an office, so I sit quite a bit during the day, but I try to get up and walk around as much as I can. My theory is that if I drink a lot during the day (working on hydration too) I’ll have to use the restroom, which is on the other end of the office, so I kill 2 birds with one stone.

Reply

When I was pregnant, I ate at least my body weight in potatoes. Potatoes in any form, preferable with lots of salt and specifically Kerrygold butter. Since I was so sick for so long both times, I just went with it!

I’m gearing up to run a 5k this morning. It’s my first 5k since 2011, and my kinda-secret-not-really-secret goal is to PR. It’s a pretty ambitious goal for where I am right now, but reach for the stars, right?

I’m not a big sitter. At a normal shift at work, I cover between 7-10 miles just walking around (according to my pedometer) and I try to walk 10k steps on my days off (I don’t count running). The research showing how prolonged sitting can negatively affect one’s health is very interesting!

Reply

Even though I work on the computer, I get up throughout the day and move around as much as possible and after 4pm I am moving.

I ran in the pouring rain today and I loved it because Im crazy like that.

Reply

I still wear those uggs too! (sadly NOT because mine match my children’s…I do just ’cause…lol)

Reply

I always craved fruit, and cheeseburgers with the twins (probably because my iron was low – I don’t love meat). I’m a mover and a shaker during the day. I teach high school & I pretty much need to be near them all day. I have a shakeout run scheduled today. we’ll see if it actually happens.

Reply

My biggest pregnancy craving with child #1 was canned biscuits. The ENTIRE can! With child #2 it was sweet potatoes and raw cookie dough. Not together. :) We got a Which Which where we live about a year and 1/2 ago and our fav is the turkey with cranberry and dressing. Yuuuuum.

Reply

Because I’m still in school I feel like I’m sitting all the time. Getting up to go to the bathroom or get a snack is the highlight of my day!

Reply

I hate sitting!! It’s the worst!!

Reply

if i am at work, i sit mostly but if i am at home with my nephew, i am running around!

no workout here as tomorrow is my first half marathon!

never been to which which…not sure if we even have one!

love the boots and the top knots!

Reply

I didn’t have pregnancy cravings as much as I developed food aversions. I suddenly was grossed out by eating portobello mushrooms. And I loved them before that

Reply

I craved mashed potatoes like crazy when I was pregnant!
I do amix of sit and move throughout the day, though yesterday I laid around almost all day-pathetic.
I did a 3 mile run with my training group this morning. I struggled a bit, not sure what the problem was.
I think Brooke is rolling her eye and saying “mom”! But how can you not kiss that face!

Reply

I’ve never been to Which Wich …. none near my house :(

Reply

Saturday mornings I usually sweat it out for a hour and a half of hot yoga. Today I had an epic fail though, forgetting a towel.

Reply

My weirdest craving was thick sliced roast beef rolled up and dipped in mayo. I never ate it, but man, I fantasized! My husband refused to let me stoop to that level of gross.

Reply

I sit all day and I hate it, especially after my accident. Hoping one day I won’t be tied to a desk all day :(

Also, I don’t know anyone who just eats half a can of soup…1 can = 1 serving and that is rarely enough for a meal.

Reply

All I wanted when I was pregnant is tomatoes. I couldn’t get enough of them! Good luck with kicking diet coke. It’s a hard habit to break. I found that once I drastically increased my daily water intake, I didn’t want things like soda or tea any more.

Reply

My biggest pregnancy craving was pretzels with peanut butter but I love it still. Can be a choking hazard because the combo is pretty dry so a glass of chocolate milk is always my chaser.
I admire you for attempting to quit DC, my weakness is coffee and yummy flavored coffee creamers EVERY morning…but I only live once…so not planning to quit…

Reply

I’m 14 weeks pregnant and so far have had no pregnancy cravings (unless you count wine…) and I sincerely hope I don’t get any. My pre-pregnancy sweet tooth was hard enough to handle, the idea of combining it with a pregnancy impatience and hormones sounds horrible :)

Reply

Both of my pregnancies coincided with the holiday season, and I was absolutely crazy about egg nog…I couldn’t get enough of it (the non-alcoholic kind, of course!).

My workout this a.m. was 7 glorious miles…glorious because this was the first time since my Oct. 6th marathon that my darn IT band didn’t hurt. Feeling excited to start taking on some higher mileage again!

Reply

LOVE that Brooks slogan! So true!! That sandwich looks amazing. I want one now. I’m actually currently pregnant, and the only real “cravings” I’ve had are for apples and water. lol does that even count?! This is one healthy baby ;)

xo

Reply

I NEEDED spicy food with both of my pregnancies. Wasabi, mexican food, spicy chinese food, buffalo wings, jalapenos…it was nuts!

Reply

This may be hypocritical advice since I have yet to break my DC habit buuuttttt… You may want to wean yourself off because it could help reduce the no-caffeine headache you might get. :)

Reply

My Saturday workout was my first 8-miler since I got my stress fracture. I’ve been running again for a montha nd veeery gradually upping mileage. Of course all runs are slow! 8:15 pace for this one… dang I remember when 7:45 was my easy pace. Oh well… slow and steady wins the race and I got to see all the SUPER SRS runners heading off to the NYC Marathon expo.

Good luck to readers who are racing it! I’ll be at mile 18 cheering.

Janae, if you want any tips on strength training, email me. :) You seem to have a great attitude toward training lately and I’m happy for you.

Reply

We are getting standing desks at work and I ‘m so excited! Now I sit for about 7 hours during waking hours. When I go on vacation I relish being on the move and active.

I do NOT like taking rest days but I took today off in the hopes of running quickly at a 7 mile race tomorrow.

I am always the fifth wheel. Aren’t friends nice to accept us?:)

Reply

Stand pretty much all day. #hairdresser. Had a 16 miler today…training for Baton Rouge full.

Reply

Which Which.

Finally someone that understands. I love that place.

Never give up diet coke. That is all.

Reply

Sitting was part of my ED. Like I once went the whole day without sitting down. So I’m trying to sit more! I just hate it though. I like to be on my feet! It is possible to stand too much!

Today I ran a zombie run – so fun! And I won overall women – free sweatshirt woot woot!

So I finally figured out which which. It’s Actually Which Wich. Like which sandwich… that took me awhile to finally put together lol :)

Reply

My Saturday morning was a quick 10k and a few strength training exercises — still trying to bring back any kind of distance myself post race.

Reply

Runners against sitting — I LOVE that!!!!

I am itching to run so badly today. I haven’t run since Wednesday :( My knee has been inflamed and really bothering me. I was supposed to do a 5K tomorrow with my run coach, but she has me sidelined. I am focusing on the BIG PICTURE of my half marathon on Nov 10th!

Reply

I used to crave Wonton soup when I was pregnant.
My workout today was an easy two miles. I was glad, because I was running on empty this morning.

Reply

I kicked DC to the curb about two years ago and haven’t had one since then. I don’t even crave it anymore- it’s kind of amazing. I do drink sparkling water sometimes and I am a coffee drinker, so I think that helped too. I tried to quit before but this time I just changed my mantra, instead of “I can’t have it” it became “I don’t drink that”.

Reply

I craved citrus like crazy with both pregnancies! No surprise that both girls down lemonade like nobody’s business :)

Reply

I try to move around in the day, even though my job is predominantly behind a desk. It’s not uncommon to see me running down the hallway to someone else’s office instead of sending then an email.

Yesterday’s workout was a mud run called the raw challenge – heaps of fun!!

Reply

Sitting is sad sad sad :( I’m on the move a lot but it hurts a LOT but I really get sad from sitting.

I remember having a sudden craving for vanilla pudding during one of my pregnancies. So bad that I walked at 10:30 pm to the gas station convenience store and bought a packet of instant pudding and a carton of milk, went home, made it, and promptly ate the entire bowl as soon as it set. For me every pregnancy had it’s own craving oddities. Medium rare cheeseburgers…no blood made me cry and I couldn’t eat it. Spicy Hunan chow mein. Chile verde burritos with guacamole, sour cream and LOTS of hot sauce. Of course, where the food came from was often just as important as WHAT it was.

Reply

I sit a LOT at my job and I really wish it wasn’t that way! I love being active all day and wish that my job involved a lot more walking around, such is the life of an accountant… :/

Reply

I never sit, actually I hate it. I either move or lie down.
Incline walking for today

I love your posts and they help me so much. Please post as much as possible. Of course if you want to :)

Reply

On Diet Coke – Just do it girl. You will feel sooo much better. I finally kicked a 10 year Diet Dr. Pepper habit last year and don’t miss it a bit now. I love me some green tea nowadays.

My Saturday workout consisted of a leisurely walk to the store. I am enjoying the recovery days after my first marathon (MCM) haha.

Reply

I transformed my desk at work to a standing work station this last June, so I am on my feet 8 hours a day plus whatever workout/running I get done after work. I recently read in Runner’s World magazine that sitting is the new smoking. That is scary! Glad I made the switch to a stand-up station :) So much healthier!

Reply

My biggest pregnancy craving is burgers (and of course a side of fires). I limit myself to one a week though so I don’t go too overboard!
My workout today was swimming. Feels great at almost 39 weeks pregnant!

Reply

You are way too amazing to be a fifth wheel for long…:)
I have Never heard of which which but I bet I would LOVE IT!!!
I am constantly on my feet…I love sitting when I can!!!!
My run was only seven miles today but tomorrow is long!!!:)

Reply

I didn’t have one pregnancy cravings, that is weird right?

I feel like I’m always on the move, but once we put my son down for bedtime, by 8pm, I don’t move off the couch until I go to bed. I do get up at 4:30 am though and workout everyday so I tell myself I deserve to be a couch potato by that time! :)

Reply

I hate sitting too much, but with my stress fracture I have been sitting more than I would like. That blizzard sounds amazing – blizzards are one of my favorite things in the world and that is a FACT! :)

Have a great weekend!

I gave up all artificially sweetened drinks this past summer. The times I craved it the most was after a run and at night. Sometimes I drink apple juice mixed with water to get my sugar fix without getting a TON of sugar. It will be hard, but you can kick Diet Coke. And having your blog will hold you accountable. I broadcasted on my blog when I was giving it up so I had no choice! I didn’t want to fail and have all my readers know. I honestly can tell no difference in my body or running performance having given up the artificially sweetened stuff, but I know it’s better for my body, even if I don’t notice a difference.

Reply

Shhh, don’t tell anyone (obviously a real secret if I’m going to leave it in a comment on YOUR blog….what is this? commenting 345?)….I craved Wendy’s hamburgers. Yikes. But gosh, they tasted good. I’d drive home after teaching and stop at Wendy’s before picking up my other kids sometimes. I’d just sit there in the parking lot and enjoy every last bite. Pretty sure I got a few odd looks. Thank goodness for not being a sitting person so I could afford the few random Wendy’s stops.

Reply

I have a love/hate with sitting. I hate not being productive, but I love the opportunity to just sit and be, without the stress of a million things to do.

Reply

My job requires an office with a desk and a computer soooo….that means I sit a lot throughout the day. Drives me crazy and makes me want to run and it means that I NEED to run! BTW, still love those Uggs and I can’t believe you are going to give up Diet Coke!!

Reply

I am a soda love as well, I just can’t kick the habit. I limit myself to one per day (sometimes I don’t even have one) and it must be a can of *regular* coke.
I stand all. day. long. As a Kindergarten teacher I’m actually kneeling, squatting, bending over, standing, walking, running, I literally never sit at my desk. Those kiddos take a lot of energy!

PB & strawberry jelly is one of my favorite meals too…I just can’t get on board with the almond butter….

Happy Sunday!

I love Brooke’s hoodie!

I sit a good portion of the day, so I try to get up often and stretch and take the dog for short walks.

No Which Which here :(

Saturday is our off day from the gym, so we try to take the dog for a good walk or hike that day.

I tend to sit a lot thanks to school… but hopefully since I will be an online student after this semester that will change :)

And I got SO excited when I saw the Which Wich sandwich in your post! I love the chicken pesto sandwich. I load it up with mozzarella, avocado, lettuce/spinach, tomatoes, cucumbers, oil, garlic and salt! I can’t wait until I move back to Orlando so I can order it all the time :P
