What to do when your running motivation gets low:

It happens to every single runner out there-  sometimes you just lose your motivation.

You start a training plan and you are overly excited to hit every pace/mile/step perfectly.  You set a goal and know that you will do anything you possibly can to hit that goal.

Screen Shot 2013 09 14 at 2 13 43 PM

But then somewhere along the way you lose your motivation (a little or a lot) and it is harder to get out for your run (but you do it anyways because runners are strong like that).

I don’t know if is just because the temperatures are getting colder or because I am still tired from my 20 miler… maybe it is because I have been training hard (for me) for a few months now or because I have a lot of emotional stuff going on but my motivation has definitely dropped this week.

That is okay.  It is normal for us to not always be excited for our alarm clock to go off to get up for our runs or to put on our running shoes, actually that is normal.

Here are some things that I am doing to get my running motivation back:

1.  Revisit your goals.  Yep, I have my goals written down and it helps me to read over them again and really think about what it will take to get my goals.

2.  Read running magazines.  This may not work for you but it always gets me more excited about running.

3.  Give yourself some time off/lower your mileage/skip a hard workout or two.  I am not going to take time off because CIM will be here before you know it but I did cut my tempo run out yesterday (also because my hips were tight) and I might cut my long run down a little this weekend to help with the mental burnout.  Our minds and bodies really can only handle so much (you can work on building that up;) so give yourself a break and next week you will be feeling a lot better.

4.  Recruit people.  I already have someone recruited to do my hard workouts with me next week.  That always gives me motivation to get out the door.

5.  Accept it and move on.  I am just accepting that the last few runs have felt really off for me and I am going to move forward.  We all know that after an off week is always a REALLY good running week.  Just know that it is normal to lose your motivation every now and then and that should help you to not stress out about it.

6.  Instagram.  Holy cow… this always motivates me.  Seeing other people’s awesome workouts and races always motivate me to get my run in.

7.  Watch movies like THIS one.  Thank goodness for YouTube because I think you can find a million running videos that will inspire you.

8.  Talk to someone about it.  My poor mom has probably heard a little too much running talk since I have moved in.  It just helps to get it out of your system and usually the person you are talking to can pick up on the reasons you feel unmotivated and help you find ways to get motivated again.

9.  If your lack of motivation is just because you are tired and you are just having a bad day…. show yourself some tough love and just go out and do it.  Stop the complaining and run it out of your system.  You will always come back in a better mood.

For example here is what happened this morning when I walked up the stairs and saw my mom.

Mom:  What’s wrong?

Janae:  Just kind of sad.

Mom:  Well, then go run it off.

And that I did.

She knows me too well and like always it worked.

 IMG 2118

(7:21, 7:22, 7:12, 7:09, 6:52, 6:50 and 6:47)

10.  Remember why you run.  If you are putting too much pressure on yourself then take a step back and think about the real reason you run and ease up on yourself a little bit (I mean, women rarely put too much pressure on themselves;)

Bonus:  This one is especially for me.  Don’t eat bags of candy late at night because when you wake up you will lack any and all motivation to do anything but eat more candy.  I am working on it:)

For the random Brooke fact of the day…

IMG 2121

(Don’t worry the curling iron is off)  Brooke always sits in the sink while I do my make-up and today she grabbed the brush and opened up the powder and started putting it on.  14 months.  I guess she kind of watches what I do.

How is your running motivation right now?  High.. Low.. Somewhere in between?

What do you do to get motivated again?

Would you rather run in the extreme heat or the extreme cold?

What is one of your current running goals?

My motivation is finally back on the upswing after months of being down. I haven’t stopped running but I just haven’t been feeling it. What is working for me is changing up the schedule a little bit. I was a morning runner but I am bored to tears with my routes. I’m switching to heavier weekend and evening running so I have the time to drive to a new place to run. I’ve also started taking classes at the gym. This is helping to remind me that I enjoy being active and working out. It makes me feel great!

hi jessica, im kind of out of motivation for long distance run for quite some time. im ok with short distance but when it comes to long distance, my whole body is just too lazy to run and i just end up walking most of the distance which is a very turn off feeling. any insight that could help me to overcome this?

Too cute! My 18 month old started getting into my makeup and got some not so fun stuff in the carpet… So! I cleaned out some old eyeshadow cases and a powder case, let them dry, then refilled them with super fun colors of nail polish! Once they were dry, Addison could play with them without me worrying about makeup getting everywhere!

This is such a clever idea!

This is a great post Janae- I’m dealing with some minor injuries and have had to scale back my running and am feeling pretty down about it. I’m not training for a race so I know it’s fine to take time off. I’d definitely rather run in the heat (I’d just go at 5am) I hate dressing in layers for the cold- takes forever, and then when I get hot mid-run I have nowhere to leave them.

I love your outfit in the mirror pic- super cute, plus Brooke kinda matches :) Glad your run helped you today- mom’s really are the best!

BTW: I’ve been eating too much candy/sugar at night too- and it’s not helping my early workout motivation.. but how to stop? haha.

My running motivation is great. My body is a little sore. I ran the Portland marathon on Sunday and paced my friend to a 30 minute PR. I’m running NYC and was too sore for miles this morning hopefully I will feel better tomorrow.
I would rather run in the cold than hot any day.
Current goal a PR at NYC!

Ohh I just recently found out about how awesome the Portland marathon is and am putting it on my bucket list for next year. Checking out your blog now and hoping to find all kinds of details about it! Awesome job pacing your friend to such a big PR. Maybe you can pace me next year?? :)

My running motivation is pretty low. My workout motivation is great though! I just can’t find a reason to push myself. My half marathon is pretty far away so its hard to stay focused. I haven’t been stressing too much and trying to just enjoy the fun workouts I’ve been trying!

Reply

I know exactly what you mean – my half marathon, which I was super excited about at first because it is my very first, isn’t until next year and right now I am really struggling to stay motivated with my running. I’m still going out and doing it but I’m not feeling it at all. I am loving my pilates class and other exercise just now though so I don’t know what’s wrong!

My running motivation is high… I have 4 races coming up in the next two weeks (RnR Brooklyn 10k & Runner’s World 5K, 10K, and half!). I change up my training schedule or try a new workout video/class to reboot motivation. I would rather run in the extreme cold, I think. Hopefully I never have to choose! My current running goal is run a sub-2 hour half marathon.

How did you know I needed this? I have no motivation. I seriously have no idea where it went. And this is very bad because I have the Undead Race on Saturday and the Provo Halloween Half on the 26th. I honestly can’t get excited about either of them. I need a swift kick in the butt!

Reply

this is a great post! My running motivation is low at this point only because I just ran a half on Sunday and one the weekend before and my legs are shot and just want a break from running. I hope I get my motivation back even though I don’t have a race coming up!

I loooooove this post!! All great tips! I love what your mom said too: “well, run it off.” Such good advice :) I definitely prescribe to the tough love one, especially if I know I’m just in a bad mood and need to snap out of it!! You and Brooke are twinsssss and it’s adorable! Yay for stripes!

“Just go run it off”… haha mama is pretty awesome :-)

My run mojo basically gets revved up this time of year because Texas fall/winter running is close to perfection.

I hate that the motivation “lows” happen, but they always pop up. I don’t think I’ve been through a single training cycle for any race when I haven’t had at least a few days of motivation “lows” … but I’ve always come out of them, and I know you will too! I’m hoping to beat my half marathon PR this Winter!

I love Brooke’s hair in that little “pony” on top of her head. She is so adorable, Janae! :)

I’m with you there.
I found that I’m working too much and my 12 hour shifts are not conducive to energy for running. I’m working so much because I divorced recently and have more bills….and I’m also tired because of the emotional toll of divorce.
It’s a big circle and just getting the UMPH! to get the shoes on and actually leave the house can be overwhelming.
I’ve never regretted a run that I did. Even if it was a crappy one.
Hang in there, you have some great ideas that I have used and it all comes around.
Candy is good.

You and Brooke are so cute and matchy matchy in that last picture.

My motivation is low lately, but I think I burned myself out at the beginning of the year and never gave myself time to recover. So I’m slowing down. I haven’t stopped running, but I lowered my mileage and I’m running without my Garmin. It’s working pretty well.

I’d definitely rather run in the cold!

My motivation is about a medium-high right now. I love running in the fall so that helps. When my motivation does dip, I love watching race/workout videos on Flotrack or youtube (here is my all time favorite: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70UF82nysIU) It is a short video because it is only a 600 m race but it is so great!!!

Cheer up Janae!

I love this post. I have been pretty motivated lately (which is rare!) but I will keep these in mind when my motivation is lacking.

You and Brooke match :)! My running goal is 3:15 for my marathon in like 10 days!!! I am not so sure about it though. My running motivation is a bit low right now…I think because I am tired…and nervous :)! I just remember that not everyday is going to be a great running day and I am going to have spurts when I just don’t feel like running. I usually let myself take it easy on those days and try to enjoy the run.

Awesome post as usual! I was just thinking about motivation this morning. I am all done with major races for the year, and I’m actually more motivated now than ever to run! I think it’s the pressure thing. I had been in training mode literally all year and ran five half marathons and trained for a marathon, but ended up having to pull the plug because of a hip flexor strain. I took some time to scale back and heal my hip, and my legs are stronger than ever. I do all of my running at 5am or earlier, and it’s easier to get out of bed now than when I was training. I do it now because I WANT to! Because I love running, and it feels fun again. I did a tempo run this morning, just because. I think having a training plan and a goal race is a huge motivator, but sometimes it causes more harm than good aka burn out. I think I’m more motivated now by the cooler temps. I hate running in extreme heat, I don’t mind loading on the layers.

I would much rather run in cold – hot just makes me cranky and dizzy

I have that same face powder. Holla! It only becomes eerier the things your kid will do that they have obviously learned from you without your knowledge. Some funny. Some not so funny ;) Her top knot is the best.

Glad to know you are human. I was beginning to think you were a running robot. I kid. But seriously it seems like you haven’t missed a work out and are nailing them all.

My running goal is to actually run again. It’s a good one I think. I miss it. Like a lot. Especially after this weekend. And I have ran in the heat and I have ran races in 7 degrees. I preferred the 7 degrees MUCH more. What? You have heard me say that before? Weird ;)

Glad your run helped you feel better this morning. If I ate a bunch of candy the night before, I am MORE motivated to run it off the next morning. Lets just say, I never missed a workout while on my vacay last week because of my eating habits. Ha!

Reply

My run motivation is so low it is almost non existent. The only thing that gets me excited is the idea of doing intervals. weird

I get motivated by reading your blog!!! I read a few others as well but your is by far the most motivating :)

I am not training for anything in particular, that may be part of the problem ;) I would WAY rather run in the extreme cold than the extreme heat! I can always layer my clothes to stay warm!

read running blogs! :)

I need this right now! I am tapering (marathon less than 2 weeks away!) and somehow my body thinks taper = no running. I need to push myself to get out there for an easy 7 mile run. Don’t worry-it is happening, but just taking longer than normal. I like the cooler weather! We even had snow last weekend!

I’m glad you posted this today :) I think I have post race letdown after the half marathon I ran this past Saturday. I took Sunday off and ran again on Monday but it just felt off! My sleep patterns are all screwed up, and I think I’ve just burnt myself out. I’m a teacher so I go go go all the time, and I just don’t think I’ve given myself enough time to recover! Reading your blog reminds me that it’s ok to take a day during the week off and I definitely don’t need to beat myself up about it! :)

I looooove looking at Instagram and reading blogs when I have zero motivation. It amazes me what some people can do!!

I have found that I go through very distinct phases with my running. One where I absolutely love it! Another where it feels perfectly average, and one where it just kind of sucks.
Unfortunately right now I am in the latter, but experience has taught me that it’s just a phase and I’ll be over it soon enough. For me personally there’s no magic bullet just patients :)

Last week I was going through a low motivation running slump. Luckily it coincided with a down week in my training. I guess my running coach is really good at her job and just *knows* when I’ll need a break! This week, after doing really low mileage last week, I am so ready to hit the road!

I think I’d like to run in extreme cold. Living in south Florida I deal with heat year round and it would be interesting to try something different!

Reply

I actually just did this today. My run just wasn’t there and I couldn’t stop thinking about when I’m not forced to run and train. So instead of my 5, I only made it 4. I. Just felt exhausted and had some pains, so I was ok with 4. I pushed myself so that was good! Hyatt being said, I’d choose heat over cold but cloudy and 65 is ideal for me :)

Right now my #1 goal is to cross the finish line of the NYC marathon!

This post is very timely for me. My motivation is definitely low right now. I just finished a half marathon on Sunday, and I didn’t PR (I knew I wouldn’t). I didn’t have a bad time, it was my second fastest time. I just feel so blah about the race. I saw some of the preliminary photos and I feel like I look horrible. And not in that normal – all races photos are horrible way. More like I just hate the way my body looks right now. And I feel like I train so hard and then just feel blah. I don’t know, it’s hard to articulate. And I signed up for my first full marathon. It’s in March so I sure hope I get my motivation back soon.

My goal is to PR at boston half this weekend! Right now my motivation is high … I’ve been running all kinds of new trails/bike paths/reservoirs/boardwalks instead of my usual neighborhood routine… that usually gets me out of a rut! Reading blogs and instagram always motivates me too!

My running motivation is pretty high right now, but I was definitely struggling a couple weeks ago. I think its normal to go through the highs and lows when it comes to running. I agree that reading running magazines and watching videos help improve motivation.

I love how she sits in the sink, that’s too cute! And I’d rather run in the hot than cold – I get sinus issues running in cold weather, so once we get to November-ish my workouts move indoors.

My motivation is just right currently. After our time in Utah when I ran here and there, being in a town that has quiet and well paved streets is … almost… making me want to return to road running.

Today I ran a bit with the BOB and Susanna. It felt pleasant as opposed to solo trail running. I can see it happening more and more, and I’m accepting that it will happen at “my pace” which is just fine.

I miss running in the extreme heat and humidity of Virginia. Those runs at Leesylvania SP taught me what I could endure if I chose to endure it. Somehow the extreme winds of our town are less appealing when it comes to going for a run.

I wondered if they make weather shields for adults like they do the BOB weather shields. Hmm…

I feel like I’ve been suffering from a little burnout myself lately. I’ve been in heavier training for races/marathons since February. I’ve ran two marathons already (June, September) and have two more this year, including CIM. I’ve started looking forward to having some time off and I still have 8 weeks to go! But you just keep going because that’s what you’d do in a race, right? No giving up!

I love you and Brooke’s matching outfits! So cute!

I’m finally getting my motivation back for the first time since early this summer. After years of going it alone since I have running-averse friends, one of my newish friends who lives down the street wants to run with me! It also might have something to do with the fact that I have a half marathon in the next two months and I need to train a little harder now…my motivation always goes up as race day becomes more of a reality!

Reply

I almost always get low on motivation in the last few weeks before a race if I’ve been training hard for a long time. I get burnt out and get to the point where I can’t wait to get the race over with and take some time off. For me what helps most is running in new places and running with friends.

Current running goal: to run again. I want to be able to flee from a mugger or run out of the way of an oncoming car. After that, I want to run for fun again. Keeping my fingers crossed and my hopes high :)

This was never so true as this morning. I had to get up at 3:00 this morning to fit in 8 miles of intervals. This is the first time I’ve done this workout. I had an awful night and got maybe 3 hours of sleep. When my alarm went off, I flat didn’t want to do it and started bargaining with myself that maybe I could do it after work. I had to give myself a little tough love. “Suck it up, buttercup, you aren’t going to be any more well rested after a day at work. Think about how great it will feel to get off work and get to snuggle up on the couch.” So I did it…and it was totally awesome! The time went by really fast and I felt amazing afterwards. Yeah for endorphins!

Reply

My motivation is pretty high right now since I’ve been able to fit some workouts in, but I know how that motivation can ebb. It’s very cyclical for me.

I think that you may be struggling with motivation, but you have plenty of determination, and that will pull you through :) it’s great that you’re listening to your body and making modifications as needed!

Honestly my running motivation is so low right now. It’s nearing the end of xc season and I am burned out!! But thank you, Janae, for sharing this post. I can relate so much to this article, and I feel like you posted this at the perfect time for me! I am not sure if I have just been in a funk or if I was training too hard and just got burnt out, but I can totally relate to this. I am starting to get more into it and am even going to a running club tonight to see if that might muster up a little motivation! I really enjoyed seeing that even amazing runners like you get burnt out at times, so thank you for posting this!

My running motivation is pretty high right now, it has to be, I have 6 races in 8 weeks, 5 half marathons and a full, ouch!
But, when I need motivation, I go run a completely different trail, path, track, etc. Change of scenery works wonders.
I complain about the heat all the time but if you put me in the extreme cold, I swear my nose would fall off and then my fingers would be too numb to pick it up. It would be ugly, just ugly. So, I guess I’ll keep the Florida heat.
My goal right now is a sub 2 half and I think I can do it too; if no one notices the wheels on my shoes….Kidding!

Omg Brooke is so cute!! Love her little bun in her hair too, ahh!

I struggle with low motivation with running too, I think it comes in waves. Thanks for the tips, it helps to know I’m not the only one who has a hard time dragging my butt out the door sometimes. For me the low motivation days are usually weather-related (cold and rainy = trackpants and couch time) for me.

One of my current running goals? To lace up those sneakers and start ;) So thanks for these tips, Janae. I find that one of the best ways to get motivated to run, or do any kind of exercise, really, is to surround yourself with people who love it and feed off their enthusiasm and energy. That’s what’s so great about the blog world — it’s a never ending source of motivation.

I haven’t run consistently in way too long, and really have no motivation to do so… it’s gotten so bad I have a hard time running 3 miles… and I’m really wanting to get back into shape and lose the weight I’ve put on since I’ve moved back to Colorado… so it’s kind of an awful circle… I feel bad because I’m not running, but I don’t run because I’m too tired/busy/cold/whatever… then I gain more weight and get lazier, then I go for a run and think “Ok, now I’ll just repeat in a couple of days”… but I never do.

I LOVE running in extreme heat. Despise anything under 50 too.
My running motivation has been high lately, possibly because I chose to forego a full this year to work on a half PR. That has come and gone and now I’m looking forward to a 10k with a first time racer. How fun!

Did you see what I ate for breakfast? You and me both on the candy at night, candy first thing. In all seriousness, too much sugar before bed gives me sort of a sugar hangover in the morning. If you are lacking some mojo, something to consider?
Sometimes changing up the time of day increases motivation for me. As soon as I tell myself I am not doing it at 6am, all I want to do is it at 6am. I’m complicated.

Hi Janae!
I also live in Utah and just seeing those mountains is my biggest motivation! It’s pretty incredible to run along a dirt trail and see the city on one side and mountain on the other. One of my friends told me that you never regret a run, so when I feel like I don’t want to get out there I remember that and I’m off! Also, cute running clothes help a ton! Winter running is my favorite.

I love what your mom said! I try to remind myself of the feeling I get when I run and that gets me out there! I don’t have that feeling in any other part of my life. I really look forward to doing something physical and a mentally stressful day!

I was just in a running rut after one of my previous injuries started bugging me again. Taking a week off really helped and when I did run after the time off, I was reminded of how awesome running is!

My motivation is pretty high right now, but I have definitely had my lows. Love this list of things to do when I do hit that low again.

Janae-Honestly, reading your posts every morning is one of my major motivations…I am fortunate that I rarely get injured, but just a day prior to my first real marathon (I was supposed to run the Portland Marathon this past weekend) I tore a tendon in my leg. The pain was so excruciating I could barely walk let alone run, so obviously I couldn’t do it. That being said, another one of my greatest motivations is being grateful every single day that I CAN run. I know my injury will heal, and I will be out there again in no time. Just this short time of not physically being able to run reminds me how grateful I am to be healthy and have the capability to do so for most of the year :)

Reply

Reading about other people always helps motivate me! I think if they are doing it I should be doing it too. My 5 year old daughter loves makeup she is a total girly girl. I think we maybe in for some trouble!

Reply

My running motivation is high, but I had a period of pretty low for a while after a not so great race.

One thing I do to get me motivated to run again is buy new clothes. Obviously can’t do that EVERY time, but if I’m feeling kind of down about running I might buy myself a new piece (new shorts, shirt, etc) and then I HAVE to get out and run to try it, and I have to be happy because who can be unhappy in new running clothes?

I’ve never run in any kind of real cold, but have run in extreme heat.. So I pick the cold.

My current goal I’ve been working on is sub 2 hour half. I’m so close (PR of 2:06) so I hope to get it at my next race (Long Beach half). I wanted it at the last race I did, but weather was too extremely hot :( Hopefully all goes in my favor, and if not, it’s not the end of the world and there will always be another race.

Reply

My running motivation is SO high right now, too bad I can’t run :( stupid femoral stress fracture! I am almost to being able to cross train though!

When I do run and I start to lose motivation I always make a point to remind myself of my goals! It’s important to remember why you are doing it. I always tell myself that not every day is going to be easy and the hard days are what really make you a better runner!

Reply

My running motivation is really high right now. I think it is really high because I can’t run at the moment because I have an injured foot (either a stress fracture or ligament damage – I get my MRI results soon) and I’m sick with the flu!!

To keep myself motivated I make sure that I change my routine. I might change the time I run or change where I run. I might go and run in a different suburb or along a different trail. It makes me really excited to run somewhere new or somewhere I haven’t run in a while.

And my goal at the moment is to run a half marathon at the Susan Women’s Fun Run on 8 December :)

Reply

My number one running goal is to run forever! :-) Right now my running motivation is very high, but as soon as it gets cold, it will drop. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’d prefer to run in the heat. That’s totally changed from about two years ago.

Brooke’s topknot is too much. So cute. If you ever need a change up from your running schedule you should come to the Tuesday 5:15 am spin class at 8th. Its a vacillating brick class. Spin for seven minutes hard, run for four minutes hard, spin for seven, run for four, etc. I loooovvveeee it. Kicks my trash everytime.

My running motivation has been lacking since my 50K last fall. It was the worst 7 hours of my life, and the training for it was pretty miserable. I pushed through an injury and kept running. No good. I’m also in school full time, so I’ve kind of accepted the fact that it’s OK to not be running a lot now. Last fall I was so stressed with running and school, and it just didn’t work out well. Not having that burden right now is great. I run when I can. I can’t remember the last time I ran 6 miles at once. I got some motivation back this summer when I was running in Germany with my best friend (and first marathon partner), and I LOVE running in Germany. I don’t think I’ll get motivated to really run again until after I get done with school. I’d love to run a 1/2 marathon in every state. So far I’ve got California, Colorado, Nebraska, and Iowa. And Switzerland. But that doesn’t count. ;)

My running motivation is pretty good right now, but I’m running 3 races in a row starting 10/20! Ah!
Today, I ran after work around my school’s campus (I’m a high school teacher) while my students worked on their floats. There is nothing more motivational then running with and around athletes. I actually raced one of the X-country runners. I held my own for almost 100 meters before he kicked my booty, but it was fun!
Oh my, I don’t like either extreme of weather; although, you can always add layers.
My current goals are to not walk at all in the Nike Womens, to hang with my BFF while she hits a PR at a 1/2 marathon that I’m doing with her, and to not poop myself while running my first ever marathon. I’m really working at a 4hr time.

I miss it being light in the morning while I run… Great tips on keeping motivated. You’re so speedy!

I get my motivation from other runners, whether it be reading the current runners world magazine, runners blogs or my current read, Chicken Soup for the Runners Soul. There are so many motivating stories in there. I think that if those people can overcome their obstacles, I can get my lazy butt out the door to run.

Running motivation is high although I haven’t ran since my race on Saturday so my legs are itching to get moving again so that could be why I’m motivated to run!

I like running in the cold a lot. I feel more comfortable in layers and the pathways are less crowded.

When I’m lacking motivation I take a couple days off incase I’m experiencing burnout then force myself to get out there bc usually I feel great once I’ve started.

I love that you guys have matching shirts on in that picture.

When I lose motivation I always make sure I’m getting enough iron because I’ve learned that’s one of the first hints for me that I’m not getting enough. Of course it’s not always the case, but I always check now!

I definitely go back an forth with motivation. My SIL tells me I’m a robot but I think it’s only bc I just keep going, going, going. I’m always training for something bc I love hitting goals- that helps. And I completely agree- I can have a yucky running week and in it’s wake is a lovely well deserved much needed amazing running week. I think our bodies just need to relax sometimes, ya know?
To get my running mojo back, or keep it going I do a lot of the same things as you! Running movies like St Ralph are awesome! And running websites, books, and especially blogs help ALOT.. Reading your accomplishments is one of my favorites!!

I love BOTH heat/cold weather running. There is just something about running in the extremes that makes you feel like a champion!!:)

I try to set a new smaller goal to accomplish like running in a new location or try to see running in a particular weather as a new challenge. Challenges get me motivated.

hahaha that picture of brooke…so funny and cute! its amazing how much kids watch you and mimic

How is your running motivation right now? it was low low low but now its medium i would say! haha

What do you do to get motivated again? i listen to my body and take time off of running and do things like biking, pilates, barre etc instead

Would you rather run in the extreme heat or the extreme cold? wow this is a tough one…gonna go with the cold because at least you can do something about it and bundle up.

What is one of your current running goals? after the bmore marathon this saturday i am going to stop marathons for awhile and focus on speed and lower race distances

My motivation is at an all time low this week because life has gotten so busy. But I keep trying to remind myself that a run will only help me feel better.

Great post.
I know what that means. I’ve been running for 15 years now, but for the years 2005-2010 after an intense period (I did too much) my running mojo was at its lowest, an awful long and frustrating period. I almost quit at the end of 2010 when I was ill for weeks. Then I saw a picture of the Garda Lake Marathon and that was the ignition. I felt that had to run this marathon and so I went from 0 to 42km. Oh, it was hard. Harder than when I started running as a novice.
But now I’m back on the bandwagon.
I listen to my body and cut back immediately when I don’t feel good. But I keep running, maybe a little slower or a little bit shorter.
My goal is to finish Venice Marathon on the 27th. Hopefully under 5 hours.
Keep going!

My running motivation is pretty high right now, I have only been back at it for 3 weeks now so I am still just excited to be able to run!

What do you do to get motivated again? – I remind myself how for the last 5 months all I’ve wanted to do was run and now that I am psychically capable of it I BETTER take advantage!!

Would you rather run in the extreme heat or the extreme cold? COLD! I melt…

Running goal is to be smart and listen to my knee. There is also a 10k I want to run on Nov 13th… I actually ended up tearing my ACL two days before I was supposed to run my first 10k so it is only fitting that it is my first race back!

This blog entry came at the perfect time for me – so THANK YOU!!! My motivation is at an all time low, which isn’t good b/c on Saturday I am running my FIRST EVER (and likely only!) half marathon. I was excited when I signed up, I was excited during training, had a great 10 miler, than a great 11, then a decent 12….then the wheels fell off. I got sick and am still recovering. Missed a 3 miler and a 5 miler turned into 4.3 with a lot of stops. The race is extremely hilly and I am just worried I can’t do it and even worse, I don’t think I want to!!! I’m mixing up my playlist, mentally imagining myself crossing that finish line, etc and I just hope that all works and that i wake up Saturday NOT short of breath like I feel now (probably anxiey) and ready to run!!

Definetley would rather run in cold than heat!!

Current goal – 13.1 AWESOME miles on Saturday. Actually at this point I’d be happy to finish!

You can do it, Lauri!! Getting sick right before a big race is so common. It happens to tons of runners! You’ve still got a few days before your race so focus on getting extra sleep and I bet you’ll be golden on race day! Just think of how accomplished you’re going to feel once you cross that finish line! Good luck!

I’m low on motivation… or low on time to go out and do what I’m motivated to do? Ah, I can’t decide.

This post could not have come at a better time for me! My motivation has been very low and the thoughts during my run this morning were focused on how to get out of this rut. :) I think it is great to acknowledge that you are burned out, take some time off, and get back to it. It works for me!

A new playlist always motivates me when I am in a slump. I really don’t know how people can run without music.

I have been fluctuating over the last few months between great running weeks and burnout. I just came back from a 10 mile run and feel great but that can all change by tomorrow lol. I handle the burnout by taking a step back, lowering mileage and re-evaluating why I run. I recently decided I don’t feel the race itch so I have pulled out of races. Weird, isn’t it? I agree. But, I still love my morning runs so that is what I am focusing on and enjoying. That may have helped with some of the burn out for me.

truly needed this this morning. not only was my debut marathon a horrible experience but then i got 30 stitches in my knee 6 weeks ago. needless to say my running motivation and ABILITY is practically gone. but i need to get it back because i want a second go at the marathon for aGOOD experience!

I love that video… I have written it out actually & have it written where I can see it!

My motivation is so low right now!! I have to get over it because I have my second half in 2 weeks. My first was 3 weeks ago and I sloshed through it like a turtle!!! I get super excited to run after reading my slew of running blogs, and then I talk myself out of it. Grrrr……..

My running motivation is pretty good right now. I run a half at the end of the month and I’m ready for it. I don’t like running in either extreme of weather. Somewhere in the middle is perfect, although living in Houston, Tx it tends to mostly be hot and humid.

My running motivation is somewhere in between right now. But I’ve been really busy!
I step on the scale and the brings the motivation back up.

Gosh this is crazy that you wrote this post! Skinny Runner wrote a similar one the other day and I can totally relate to both of them! I have a half marathon this Saturday here in Charlotte and I have just kind of let my running go to the side…granted I did a 10 miler last Thursday, but way slower then usual and it’s really made me frustrated/unmotivated! The thing is, it’s hard to get out there, but once you do it’s always worth it and I know I will feel that way on Saturday as well regardless of whether it’s my best run / race or not and I’m ok with that :)

You and Brooke are just so gorgeous by the way!

Reply

ahh I needed that. My race season is almost over and I’m ready for a two week break so i can recharge for next spring. :)

I love the picture of Brook in the sink. Super cute putting on makeup!!
My running motivation is up and down, I go online and read quotes a lot to help me get motivated.

You should also list reading running bloggers blogs!!!
Huge motivation for me:)
I’m all about running in the cold.

My running motivation is to just keep scheduling events. I have two marathons and two half marathons scheduled between now and February. If I don’t have something close on the horizon, I know I won’t get the runs in. However, I typically run these events between a comfortable 9 and 10min/mile pace, so it’s I’m rarely thinking “I can’t do this.”

Reading running magazines and twitter definitely help me a lot!

My running motivation is over the top right now! I have a half marathon in 4 days and the New York City Marathon in just 24 days! The only issue: I got the flu yesterday :( I feel better today but I have no energy whatsoever left in my body…

Reply

My running motivation just increased dramatically after last weekend’s 10k PR. A good race is always motivating, don’t you think? Also, I watched a video of myself running and realized I have developed the world’s longest stride and heel strike. What? No!! So now I have a new mission; increase my cadence! I am determined to channel all that wasted energy into speed and that is definitely motivating!

This post was well-timed for me. I am currently 19 weeks into a 24-week training plan for the Philly Marathon and I am getting burnt out big-time. For me, looking forward to running with friends on Saturdays helps, and yesterday I was able to convince my husband to do a quick 4 miles with me which was awesome. Variety seems to be key for keeping my motivation up (or at least… intact).

My running motivation is HIGH right now. It definitely helps to read running magazines and running blogs.

To re-motivate myself, I remind myself of my goals and how GOOOOOD it feels after a run.

I’d rather run in the c-c-c-cold!

Current running goals – Finish a marathon in about 3:45….I’ve been “off” the last year.

Running motivation is low right now. Moving has wiped out all of my extra energy and my achilles is still giving me trouble since Ragnar two weeks ago. I tried a little jog this morning and it’s still hurting :(

I would much rather run in the freezing cold. Once you start running you get warmed up anyway!

Reply

I’d say I’d rather run in any extreme weather that we ARENT in right now. Is that awful for me to admit?

I had a step back week last week. I think I hit a mental wall and physical burnout. The one skipped workout definitely did wonders for me and now I am back in the saddle in training for CIM.

I find when my motivation is low, I read running blogs and it perks me up. that and reading the running magazines too :)

This 47 year old gal had real challenges with the VA heat & humidity this summer so I ‘ll take cold anytime. I got really ill a few times this summer trying to push it. I guess us gals deal with changes in our bodies our whole lives. My goal though is to be running at 70 no matter the speed :)

genious. my mother says exactly the same thing!

This is what i wanted to read. So glad that i am not alone. I have been running for 20 years and only time i stopped was when i was in hospital having my children. Normally i get up at the crack of dawn, put my joggers on and run and i always feel so great afterwards, BUT lately i have lost all motivation, i have not run for 3 days and i feel like crap but i just cant seem to put my joggers anymore, they are near my front door untouched. I seriously need to get my tempo back bigtime, wierd thing is that when i dont run i am more inclined to eat the ‘bad’ food, when i run i am a health nut. HELP!!!lol seriously
