Wearing mittens while doing speedwork.

I don’t know if I am laughing, tripping  or crying from being tired in this picture but we will just pretend I am laughing with my eyes closed when my dad snapped the picture.

2 things:

1.  I have never worn mittens while running until today and I kind of loved them.

2.  Before the run my legs were the color of snow but it was so cold outside this morning that they turned to the same color as my shirt (ps THIS is still my favorite shirt).

IMG 2203

I had a very late start this morning and so by the time I could get out for my workout school had already started so I couldn’t use the high school track.  Instead I went with my dad to the park where my dad always walks.  Each time around is .43 mile so I just kept track of my distance with the garmin.

1 mile warm-up

6 x 800 meters (or .5 miles today)

400 meter (.25 miles) jogs in between each interval

2 mile cool-down

I like seeing improvements.  I still have a long ways to go in terms of speed work if I want to get that sub 3 marathon but that is okay, I am ready to work.

IMG 2218

Besides just working on speed work I am working really hard on my mental muscle!  This ARTICLE is awesome if you are wanting to learn more about this:

Screen Shot 2013 10 10 at 12 10 12 PM

My two favorite parts from the article.  I really think you should read them.

“It’s not lactate levels in your blood or oxygen shortages in your muscles that force you to slow down, it’s how your brain interprets those signals. In other words, the effort of running is only as hard as your brain perceives it to be. Scientists have since demonstrated that seemingly absolute physical limits are imposed by the brain—not the body.”

“Until recently, coaches and sports scientists believed runners should be as fresh as possible for workouts—well fueled and fully hydrated with rested legs. Now elite athletes sometimes do the opposite: train on empty stomachs and tired legs to stimulate the adaptations that help them cope with the rigors of racing. We’re due for the same shift when it comes to the brain, Marcora believes: Fresher isn’t always better……  If your brain is fried after a stressful day at work or a sleepless night with a sick kid, don’t follow the usual advice and reschedule the hard workout you had planned. Instead, embrace the mental fog and hammer the run. Yes, your times will be slower than usual, and the adenosine levels in your brain will be sky-high. You will hate running, and life in general, and Sam Marcora in particular. But if, a few months later, those please-stop-now runs translate into a PR, you’ll forgive him.”

That’s some good stuff to think about during your next run:)

My sister’s kids have fall break right now so we are living it up with them today.

I think they are sick of smiling for the camera.

PLEASE try this combo before judging it.  Make a grilled cheese sandwich and put jam on top of it.  I thought it was the weirdest thing ever before I tried it and once I tried it I will never go back!

DSC 6816

I made grilled chicken salads for me and the sister.

DSC 6815

And now we are off to get hot chocolate since it is close to freezing here.

PS judging by Brooke’s hair I would say she had a rough nap (it was in a cute bun before she went down).

I just got that same shirt, but in the turquoise, and I love it! It’s amazing.

You should read the book Running Within. It’s all about the mental aspect of running. It is FANTASTIC. Seriously. Please read it. I promise you’ll love it. Don’t be discouraged by the dorky cover, it’s the best book I’ve ever read.

Reply

I put on my capris and long sleeve pullover only to find it pitch dark and too scared to run outside!

I love just olive oil and balsamic vinegar – and salt! and now I am craving a salad…

I spent time with my coworkers today – both at work & outside of work!

Reply

I really love your running shirt. I actually do wear mittens sometimes and like them a lot. Gloves make my fingers turn numb so I always choose mottens if I need something to stay warm. Brooke’s hair looks like mine… Everyday. Just kidding but she does look like she had a pretty good nap!

Reply

Oh my goodness you are cute!

I wore a hot pink, long sleeved, lightweight shirt under my Under Armour shirt. Capris because it was only 40* out. Brrr, cold weather’s coming!

Reply

On my run this morning I had on black Nike shorts, orange Oiselle long sleeve top, Lululemon headband, Target C-9 bra, Mizuno shoes black Target $1 gloves, Garmin 220. I hope that is detailed enough.

If you have never try grill cheese with maple syrup, you should. It sounds weird but it is so good.

Reply

I am going to have to try the grilled cheese maple syrup combo. What kind of cheese do you recommend? I like grilled swiss cheese and grape jelly the best right now.

Reply

I like American or cheddar with the syrup. I hope you like it.

Reply

I grew up eating grilled cheese with a bowl of home-canned peaches on the side, and dipping the sandwich in the peach juice. I love the sweet and salty combo, so the jam or syrup is right up my alley!

Reply

GREAT article! Thanks!

Favorite salad dressing: Brianna’s blush wine vinaigrette. It’s AMAZING on strawberries if you like those in your salad.

I love hot chocolate when it’s cold enough for it, which doesn’t happen much in Tucson. My favorite is peppermint hot cocoa.

Loving Brooke’s nap hair! My daughter (now 28 months) used to always wake up with “that was a gooood nap” hair. :)

Reply

I had some red legs after my run this morning too. I haven’t gotten the gloves out yet though. It probably won’t be too much longer before that has to happen. Nice job with your run!

Reply

i read that article and found it pretty interesting. note at the end, though — he doesn’t do well in his marathon! because he wasn’t physically fit enough. so, meh. i don’t know.

Reply

I thought the same thing! I just love the idea of training physically hard and also training your brain hard for a race!

Reply

Years ago I read a study where mentally imagining yourself work a particular muscle (e.g. biceps) daily for a few weeks actually improved the strength of that muscle. It’s amazing how one affects the other.
I just found the New Scientist article on it : http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn1591-mental-gymnastics-increase-bicep-strength.html#.UldoC1DLrwk Like I said, it was years ago.

Reply

I’m about to head to my pilates class…in yoga pants and a tank. Nothing too exciting! I know it’s so bad for you, but I’m on a ranch dressing kick! I actually really don’t like hot chocolate- I know that’s weird! I’ve just been around coworkers all day! And my students!

Reply

I LOVE those thoughts on running & the mental aspect of the brain. Such great thoughts!

I def love hot cocoa–need some on a day like this for sure!

Not sure yet what I’m gonna wear to teach my class tonight….but it’ll prob involve capris & a longer top to cover that bump fully! ;)

Reply

Hot chocolate is one of my go-to hot drinks. I don’t drink coffee, and rarely drink tea, so it’s either hot chocolate or apple cider if I want something hot.

Reply

I love that mental running thing. I had a tougher run recently, and it was definitely a mind over muscle situation!

My favourite salad dressing is balsamic vinigarette. Because I’m fancy ;)

Today I’ve spent LOADS of time with my colleagues and not enough family with my family! I can’t wait to go and say hi to them. Enjoy your time with your family – they’re the best aren’t they :)

Reply

I love your shirt! It is so darn cute I wouldn’t want to sweat in it. Which leads me to one of your questions. you would not want to see what kind of shirt I wore on the treadmill this morning. So thin and worn you can almost see thru it but it keeps me cool. Oh and running capris. I can’t believe you can wear those shorts when it’s so cold!
I’d rather eat a brownie than drink hot chocolate. I’d rather eat my calories than drink them.
We’ve had 2 cold days here in So.Cal where I live. It was 47 degrees this morning. ( I know this is nothing compared to what you have in Utah! I’ve never lived someplace cold so I wouldn’t even understand real cold.
I’ve been with my 4 kiddos all day.

Reply

Ohhh I love my running mittens! My hands get freakishly cold so I layer gloves inside of them!

Reply

Favorite salad dressing: Buffalo ranch by Wishbone.. so good. I like hot chocolate, but I prefer hot tea. Tetley brand to be exact, with a dash of milk and two Splenda’s :)

Reply

Love that bed hair! Have you tried banana in your grilled cheese? it’s pretty amazeballs but be careful as the banana really heats up and can burn little tongues (and big ones!).

Reply

I haven’t tried that but now I have to!

Reply

My workout was an hour on the elliptical- so I wore shorts(cheap cotton ones from walmart- I actually don’t like any of the real running shorts) and a blue (old A&F layer tank haha) It was REALLY hot in the gym today-I love your shirt btw- and great speed workout- it’s fun to see improvements :)

i’m loving the Bolthouse yogurt dressings lately- my faves are the blue cheese and ranch one!

Love hot chocolate in the winter- it really warms me up. Sometimes I have a smoothie or ice cream and follow it with hot cocoa to warm me back up haha.

Can’t believe you haven’t used mittens- so much better than gloves!

Reply

If you’ve never tried it, I -highly- recommend tossing a banana in your PBJ and grilling it… the banana becomes all ooey and gooey and… omigosh… I can’t even finish that thought.

I think that mental strength definitely plays a huge role in running, but I’m not sure how I feel about training on empty… To me, that’s just asking to get injured.

Reply

Her post-nap hair is so funny, haha I think that’s how I look like when I wake up too.

Hot chocolate is the best invention, I like it best with whipped cream on top. I don’t have it very often (like 3 times per winter) but I just love it. I also love apple cider with cinnamon. Oh man, so good.

My favourite salad dressings right now are just homemade creations that I make up in my head. I love creamy dressings but they’re no good for you, but I make them with plain greek yogurt + bbq sauce for a bbq chicken salad, or plain greek yogurt + salsa for a mexican-style salad, I could go on… but you get the drift. :)

Reply

I wore a pair of black capris and a homemade tie die t shirt!!! It was fantastic. I did a 4 mile tempo run (I’m healing remember, baby steps) and watching pawn stars. It was awesomeeee.

I always make my own salad dressing, right now I am on an apple cider vinegar and evoo kick!

Are you a big hot chocolate drinker? – nope, tea!

I have been with lots of people! My co-workers, my roommate, the people at old navy, the people at the grocery store, and I will soon be with friends celebrating a birthday over lasagna and cake, WIN.

Reply

I read that article in Runner’s World and it was definitely really interesting.

I wore capris and a short sleeve stop for my run this morning. They were both from Old Navy. They actually have some pretty good workout gear and it is really cheap.

Reply

I love hearing about your runs – until I can run again, I will live vicariously through you ;)

Reply

Ahhh that peanut dressing is one of my FAVORITES that I miss from Trader Joes. DENVER GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER!!! Get the TJ’s FINISHED!

Reply

I could use a hot chocolate right now. It’s cold and rainy here and I’m snugging with my baby girl and my puppy. I’m starving…maybe pizza is in my future.

I love that shirt! Does it actually keep you warm? But not too warm?

Reply

I have spent most of the day with my husband getting a bunch of work done before we head out of town for the Chicago Marathon tomorrow!

I am currently loving to put salsa or corn, black beans, and chick peas on top of my salads instead of dressing. It is quite delicious!

Reply

LOVE hot chocolate. The peppermint kind is my favorite!

Reply

I still need to try that dressing! It sounds so good!

I like hot chocolate. Especially the flavored/specialty kinds. But I would rather have my calories in the form of ice cream…even when it is cold.

My kids, their friends (they had a play date here since it is Fall break…and there is not much we can do outside), and the dentist. I have a cavity this time around. Lame.

Brooke’s hair is the definition of awesome. Another definition is your run! Holla! Yay for improvements and the fact that you braved the weather makes you way more hard core than I will ever be.

Reply

It has been the best Ohio October weather that I can remember so I wore shorts and a tank! 70s and sunny all week. Taking full advantage and have run more in the past two weeks than I have in a really long time.

I love sweet n sour dressing. So delicious! My favorite is a local brand.

Brooke’s nap hair looks like my hair after I have been sleeping…

Reply

I wore a BUFF (best race swag ever), Nike Pro shorts, and a old long sleeve cotton (don’t knock it, it still works!).

I am obsessed with Marie’s Blue Cheese Vinaigrette. On a wedge salad with an obscene amount of bacon? Perfection.

I’ve been with my co-workers…all day. I <3 them, but is it 5PM yet?

Reply

I love the cheese/jam combo! I do it in the morning on toast. Favorite salad dressing is bleu cheese and I also LOVE hot chocolate. It’s just not cold enough here yet!

Reply

1) I love that shirt! The color is just perfect on you.

2) I totally believe you that the grilled cheese jam is amazing. I once had the following sandwich at a friend’s house and now it’s one of my favs. I call it gourmet Grilled Cheese: Sourdough bread, Sharp white Vermont cheddar, cherry preserves/jam and fresh basil. It seriously is the best. I definitely recommend you try it! Do it, you WON’T regret it. :)

3) we miss you!

Reply

It was 60 degrees while I was running today so I wore a Target C9 running skirt, a Nike tank, and mizuno wave inspires. It was so nice out! I don’t have strong feelings about hot chocolate. I will drink it but don’t crave it. I spent the day with my kiddos. Great job on your run!

Reply

It was pretty cold out here this morning (52 degrees) but I hope it doesn’t get so cold that I have to wear mittens. damn.

I wore capris, tank top, and a SF Giants running jacket (all white) with my visor and reflective gear. :)

LOVE hot chocolate. Speaking of which, hear of the hot chocolate runs happening around the country? http://www.hotchocolate15k.com/ There’s on in SF in January (if you’re back out this way again at the time).

Reply

Ok you’re a champ. I need to get out and run even though it’s cold. and I love, love that shirt!!

I’ve been with my coworkers all day. Can’t wait to go home and get in sweats and a comfy blanket! Tonight is the first night I’ll have stayed in all week, so I’m excited!

Reply

I spent the day at work and then with my daughter at her last cross country meet. Wish I could make the season last longer!

Reply

THE BEST grilled cheese topping is tomato jam. It’s my new favorite thing to put on a lot of things but grilled cheese is where it really shines. If you’re up for a project I highly recommend making some!

Reply

My workout outfit today was black capris from Target & a lululemon tank, and my workout was an hour of jumping at an indoor trampoline park. So fun, and a great workout!

Reply

Salad dressing for me = lemon juice and olive oil. Sometimes French dressing works for me, too.

Today has mostly been a hub and daughter day, though I did just Skype with my parents for the first time.

Oh, and the guy who picks up scrap metal came by again today to get more of our bought-a-new-home-and-the-yard-needs-to-be-cleaned-out metal today. He’s become like family, and he makes our yard and house better… so… yay for coming over, John!

Reply

no gloves here yet… it is getting chilly though.

I was around my patients all day today haha. Now I’m relaxing with my hubby and puppy:)

Reply

I ran an easy 4 miles today and I wore black capri leggings, Nike pro compression singlet and a new balance shirt. And of course my brooks adrenaline. I love apple cider!!! Not as a big fan of hot chocolate. My favorite dessert here lately is a cherry and peach crisp. Basically throw that in a pan with a little butter and cinnamon and vanilla and then pour a bunch of granola on top. Bake for like 15 minutes and it’s perfect!!!

Reply

Janae where did you get that top for Brooke? It is way too cute and i need to get one for my little girl!

Reply

It is from Carter’s! You have to get it!

Reply

I’ve definitely made cheese and jam sandwiches before! Never grilled, though, something I would love to try! Grilled cheeses with apple slices are good too

Reply

I just want to brag that I just ran 11 miles on a treadmill. Like I’ve never done that before and I feel like I’m channeling my inner Janae ;) I love that top!! You’re so pretty!

Reply

Grilled cheese with jam? Ill have to try it!

Reply

You need to try a brie and berry jam grilled cheese. It will seriously rock your world.

Reply

I love hot chocolate… I even drink it in the summer in Arizona!!! There is this place by one of the canals I run on and I always stop for hot chocolate for the long drive home.

Reply

I love hot chocolate. Top it off with real whipped cream, and I’m one happy mama. Love that Run Happy shirt. I need to find one!

Reply

I had such a long day at work. I’m lying on my bed contemplating slipping my run when I read your post. Now I must go work on my brain/willpower on the treadmill.

Reply

Nice job with the 800s! The views from your runs are always so amazing.

Reply

I wore capris, long sleeved shirt and MITTENS this a.m.! Was a wee bit chilly.
Interesting info on the mental aspect of running.
Love hot chocolate but don’t drink much of it for some reason.

Reply

I can’t pay attention to Brooke’s hair because I’m too busy wishing I had Brooke’s SHIRT in my size!

Reply

I used to wear cotton socks on my hands when it was cold because they double as excellent runny nose wipers. Love your girl’s bed head :) I worked out (did my PT exercises) naked because I remembered I needed to do them right before I got into the shower! You asked for details! Lol.

Reply

I actually love Cholula as salad dressing :)

Reply

What amazing running scenery you have! You are such an inspiration :) I’m running my first half marathon and when I do my long runs, I figure you’re probably running at the same time, except much faster and much further so I try to stick it out!
Love Brooke’s hair <3

Reply

Just read that article this week–it’s a good one! I wore shorts and a long-sleeve shirt today, but no mittens yet! :)

Reply

You want to know something equally weird and delicious. Cheddar and a marshmallow on a saltine cracker. Warm that puppy up let me tell you, it is mmmmm good!

Reply

Brooke’s hair! It’s soooo long!!! And pretty awesome after the nap, too ;) I will definitely be having hot chocolate tonight, too. You’ve convinced me. It’s not even that cold, but I don’t care. It sounds delicious. I wore my fave hot pink tank top to work out in today, with black yoga pants :)

Ooooh, I’m a teacher-I wish we got a fall break! Here in Houston it is still pretty darn warm.

I was with kids all day at school, then came home to my parents and my girls!

Reply

Not a coffee drinker so I love hot chocolate!!! Cute top!

Reply

Those post nap cheeks are looking so kissable!

Rest day, so no workout clothes. Don’t tell anyone, but I stayed in my pajamas the entire day!

Definitely a hot chocolate drinker! And I spent the day with the husband – he’s been gone for business the past 3 days, I was glad to have him home.

Reply

I love good hot chocolate, but I’m picky. It has to be quality. Like the ghiradelli mix my fiancé picked up for me… Mmmm.

Same with my workout clothes. I’ve been super adoring my Costco threads lately. Really good quality for not too much dinero, and every season they release a new set that works with all their previous sets too.

I’m not going to lie though; if I’m running on the treadmill in the early am, I’m usually wearing as little as possible, because no one can see me!

Reply

No run this morning.

I love hot chocolate! It’s the best!

I’ve been with my husband and the dog all day!!

Okay, so I’m a stranger to you but you share so much I feel like we’re friends already so I’m going to share something I found today. You always talk about how much you love your exercise clothing, and I found the perfect underwear for you! (It’s completely normal to suggest underwear to strangers right?) So anyway, they’re called rundies!!
http://www.oiselle.com/shop/rundies?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_content=rundies%2Bcute&utm_campaign=rundies
There is the link. You probably already know about them, but if not, they seem like something that would definitely help you get excited about running if you’re needing motivation. I mean I definitely would be.

We just got to IL to visit some great friends that I miss tons!!!

My CWX Stabliyx tights for the first time since last winter. Oh they felt so good!!! And bright neon green long sleeve shirt with thumbholes. dude i am so nerdy about the thumbholes. i refuse to buy long sleeve running shirts without them!

Reply

Brooke’s hair is so long and you are so fast!
I was driving home from work and it was such a gorgeous day that I pulled into one of our awesome trails, peeled off my scrub top (t-shirt underneath) and did a 2 mile power walk in my scrub pants. I’m glad I did it too! Catalina will always be my favorite dressing, but right now I’m making my own with EVOO and basalmic vinegar and seasonings. I LOVE hot chocolate. Today I’ve been with co-workers and family.

Reply

My legs were bright red when I got back from running this morning too. It was in the low 30s this morning, but I’m still trying to hold out in the shorts every morning! I have had to use a headband and gloves/mittens though.

I made this hot chocolate today because it was 50 degrees in CA! Brrrr for us thin-skinned people :) http://karainthekitchen.com/nutella-hot-chocolate-homemade-marshmallows/

Great article – I get so much inspiration from your blog, thank you so much!
4 inches of snow this morning, first time for my ice bugs.
Cheese with sweet stuff is delicious!
Hot chocolate – no, mulled wine – yes!

Today is a rest day – I have my marathon on Sunday so I’ll put in like 20-30 minutes super easy tomorrow just to stay loose but nothing today. Just stretching. I may go to the gym just to use the power plate. I really wish I had one of those at home. It’s my favorite.

My favorite salad dressing is balsamic vinaigrette.

Today – no one, just the dogs so far. I’m the first one up per the usual. TGIF – one more day of work this week! I’ll be with Jackie and Kate at work all day, the people at Target as I need to stop by and then my friend is coming in tonight to run the marathon with me on Sunday. And by ‘with me’ – she’s doing the same race as I. She doesn’t have the insane dream of BQ’ing. I don’t know why?!

Reply

I have always been more of a tea drinker. I used to love French Vanilla Swiss Miss, but they discontinued it last year. So no hot chocolate for me. :-( Tazo Chai tea is awesome though – like pumpkin pie in a cup. :-)

You make me want to eat salad.

Every time I see that Utah background, it makes me want to be there (after my fall season is over though – nothing beats those gorgeous leaves). It’s so beautiful!

I was with about 400 elementary students (I’m a counselor) all day yesterday, followed by an evening with my husband and cat. Today will be the same. TGIF! Race in the a.m.

You are so cute. I love love love your blog.
Also, the fact that it’s freezing there is so weird to me! I need to live in Utah! :)

I haven’t gone for my workout yet, so it’s still undecided as to what I’ll wear :-p And my best friend stayed the night last night, so I’ll spend some time with her today, plus the boyfriend!

Oohhhh I love me some grilled cheese with strawberry jam! Have you ever had a peanut butter and pickle sandwich? If not, I challenge you to try it. It’s like grilled cheese and jam: it sounds weird but tastes delicious! Use bread and butter pickles. The salt/sweet combo is fantastic!

Reply

My workout yesterday was 5 miles on the TM. I did 25 pushups after each mile to break it up.

I was basically just with my coworkers yesterday…lame. My husband had some after-work thing that he didn’t get home from until right before I went to bed! Hopefully today we will get to meet up with some old friends, though. :)

I wore capri tights and a gray lightweight burnout t-shirt that I love for a run by the river. My current favorite salad dressing is the ginger-miso dressing from Whole Foods. Oh my goodness, so delicious! I actually sometimes top stir-fry with it, too…

I love this and the article in it! Especially “Embrace the Mental Fog, and hammer the Run.” The mere sight of the Chicken Salad is making my mouth water for lunch. Fun Post!

Running with mittens, wow!!!

Brooke’s hair is so funny in the last photo!

Your grilled cheese with jam sounds a little like a Monte Christo, so I can totally get behind that. ;-) My mom always puts garlic powder inside of the grilled cheese sandwich when she makes them. I had no idea that wasn’t how everyone ate them until I was an adult!

Reply

I recently discovered your blog and have been lurking daily for the past 3 weeks. I had to comment though because I ALWAYS eat my grilled cheese like that and everyone always thinks I’m a weirdo! My dad has always eaten it like that and it’s amazing.

What kind of mittens are those? They look awesome.

I haven’t worked out yet today, so I’m still in my pajamas trying to muster some kind of motivation to move.

In the winter I LOVE hot chocolate. It was freezing on Saturday when I was working at the outdoor Hartford expo, so I was pretty much mainlining hot chocolate all morning.

You have to try Adding an egg to that cheese and jam sandwich.
Just trust me.
