The reason I got into marathoning/racing etc.

Once upon a time I was doing my usual 60 minutes of ellipticalling (what I did every single day of my life for a few years) next to Megan and she told me that she had just signed up for the SLC marathon.

Somehow this girl convinced me to sign up to do the race with her.  She is quite the saleswoman.

Within 7 minutes of getting home after our conversation at the gym I was pushing submit on the registration form for the marathon and then the magic happened.  My aunt sent me an awesome training plan and I stuck to it like glue (along with teaching spin classes and using the elliptical to cross train).  I did every single training run (except for one) on the treadmill because I am crazy like that and then I did the marathon.  And I was hooked.

You’re welcome for completely useless information.

This is Megan, she is the reason I did my first marathon (I always knew I wanted to run a marathon but I was just going to wait until I was 60 or something to do one so that it didn’t matter how fast/slow I finished).

Last night after I put Brooke down to bed I picked her up for a special date to Sodalicious in Provo.  It is in a tiny building and there is a walk up window and a drive thru.

Nothing weird about getting a Dirty Diet Coke (DC, lime and coconut) late at night.  This decision is going to feel really good on my early morning run.  Who needs sleep?

Let’s continue moving backwards throughout the night.

Birthday dinner (only 3 months late) with this gorgeous friend of mine.  They get to eat for free at a few different restaurants and they invite me to come with them because they know I have a thing for food and talking for hours on end.  Kind of one of my favorite things.

The main course was like Thanksgiving dinner.  The twice baked potatoes were my favorite.  The chicken, cauliflower and carrots were also amazing.

I found my new favorite grain ever… it was in the brussels sprout dish…. FARRO.  Please try it, it is so good.  PS everything at this restaurant is local and organic.  I will be back.

And a fun little walk with Brooker around Provo.

PS reader Katie took first place in her costume contest.  I think the piñata costume is the best Halloween costume ever.

Since it is Halloween we need to have a serious question about what candy you got the most excited about when you would go trick-or-treating as a kid?

-Twix and Milky Ways

ALL THE CANDY!!! Jk I like anything with chocolate and caramel! Do they still make fast breaks? I used to love those! Not a fan of scary movies… At all. Give me a comedy or chick flick!

Reply

LOL – I love this comment Elizabeth!! No to the scary movies – we can watch a chick flick together and eat chocolate candy. ;)

Done and done.

My uncle got me to sign up for my first race then I fell off the running wagon but a couple years later my boyfriend ran and I wanted to show myself I could do it again. I just finished my first full marathon on Sunday!!!

Such delicious food in this post!

I was really hoping to see “Hocus Pocus” on tv, because it’s pretty much the best Halloween movie ever, but no luck :(

Guess I’ll just have to eat fun sized chocolate bars to console myself :)

Reply

Favourites have to be Kit-Kat and Aero… wow as I type this I’d pay a lot of $$$ for one considering they don’t sell them here!! :( People also don’t celebrate Halloween in Africa so I will not be doing much – but enjoy yours!

Reply

Scream has to be the best Halloween movie! We have been watching The Shining – we have to watch it in installments because I’m a wimp and need to stop to watch Modern Family so I can sleep at night. We’re on to Day 3.

My Dad got me to sign up to my first race back in 2005 – we did the City2Surf in Sydney, Australia together. It was amazing: the view as you finish of Bondi Beach was great. Plus we got into the corporate tent for food and massages thanks to Dad’s work ;)

Happy Halloween!

I’m the biggest wimp when it comes to scary movies, so the best I can do around this time of the year is Nightmare Before Christmas ;) And when it comes to candy, Twix used to be my all-time favourite before they slapped an allergy warning on it, so now it’s KitKat and Skittles… although not together.

I’ve never run a race since I just got back into running a few weeks ago, but I’ve been eyeing some up, so I have a feeling it’ll happen next spring :D

Reply

I’m giving out sweet/sour candy tonight simply because my husband already ate all the chocolate!! I don’t have a candy preference….I’m not a fan. Shocking, I know. My father got me into marathons when I was in high school. I now sign people up for marathons as a p-trainer and group ex Instrctor. Do you plan to teach spin again? I miss your playlists !

Reply

Hocus Pocus is my fav Halloween movie… Followed by the Great Pumpkin. I’m with you on the candy: twix and Milky Way :)

Reply

Eating free at restaurants?! Where can I get myself one of those gigs! I hope Brooke scores lots of good candy tonight. I know you’ll make sure she doesn’t miss out. My favorites were always the gummy candya like twizzlers. We have a whole bag in the closet. I am going to be that friend that gets all my friends into marathons since I’m already getting them on the run train. It’s too addicting not to!

Reply

When I was student teaching my co-op teacher was a runner in high school and college. I was already running but for the sake of running and fitness, not for a race or a goal. I was probably up to around 6-7 miles and she told me about a local 10 mile race. I must have been vulnerable one day after working with a bunch of 3rd graders and agreed to doing it.

Best decision I ever made.

Reply

I still think it’s crazy you trained for your first marathon on a treadmill!
Those buns in the photo look incredible.
My favourite halloween chocolate bar was definitely Reese peanut butter cups and least favourite crispy crunch.

Reply

I did pretty much all of my training on a treadmill for my first marathon today! Those Reese’s pumpkins get me every time! I just tried Farro for the first time and I love it too. Happy Halloween!

Reply

For the longest time, I ONLY did my long runs on a treadmill, also. The nice thing about treadmill running is that the weather can’t affect it, you can totally zone out without the chance of getting hit by a car or chased by a dog, and there’s no chance of getting lost! I switch up treadmill running and outdoor or track training because when you get to the actual race, it won’t be on a treadmill. I don’t feel fully prepared unless I train on a natural terrain for at least half of my workouts.

Flavored tootsie rolls. Can’t wait to see Brooke’s costume! Rory is dressing up as a golfer and Mollie is a witch…a nice one I hope! :). Have a great day!!

Reply

Tootsie roll pops, smarties (the Canadian ones, so chocolate), coffee crisp yum yum yum
My friend Kia convinced me to do my first 10k. She had done a half marathon out of nowhere and I figured if she could do that, I could do a 10k!

Hershey’s Cookies n Creme & Milkway win in the chocolate category.
Sweedish Fish & Sour Patch kids win in the other category.

My high school cross country coach got me to sign up for my first road race my sophomore year. I needed some motivation to stay active in the off-season. One race and I was hooked!

I can’t wait to see Brooke’s costume. Happy Halloween!

Reply

My favorite candy are Three Musketeers and all things gummy!

I am not a HUGE fan of scary movies, BUT my husband loves them so I think tonights Halloween agenda is to download some horror movies and watch them together!

My husband got me to sign up for my first race. I saw him running and was always spectating, and finally I gave it a whirl and I haven’t stopped since!

Reply

Totally agree with you–Twix and Milky Way are my top choices!! When I buy the bag of mini’s of like Snickers, Milky Way, Twix and Baby Ruth, Twix and MW are *always* gone first.

Reply

Anything chocolate without nuts or coconut…well snickers are ok :-).

My good friend Rachel got me to sign up for the Nashville Half in 2007 and I’ve been hooked ever since!

I can’t wait to see Brooke’s costumes!

Reply

Hands down the reeses cups. To this day they are my favorite.

I am so excited to get back to running now that my knee is healed and kick some butt :)

Reply

My husband got me to sign up for my first race and he’s not even a runner! I was always the most excited about anything chocolate-not much has changed!

Reply

I was kinda the same way about the marathon, I had a friend who asked, I signed up and just did it and now I am hooked! I totally looked forward to Whoopers! I love Hocus Pocus! Not really a fan of scary movies, or anything scary really!

Reply

Love farro – it’s the best!!

Happy Halloween!!!

Reply

I do not like scary movies at all. My favorite candy is peanut butter m&m’s and I don’t know why I signed up for a marathon….I think I just thought it would be a cool accomplishment!

Reply

It’s not random that you told us how you got into racing. It’s a fun fact to know!

Reese’s Peanut Butter cups were always my favorite candy.

I NEVER wanted to run a marathon. I told all of my friends – don’t ever let me run one. I’ve run 4 and will run my 5th at Boston this year. Why?? Because I also love the schedule and sticking with a plan. It is so fun to write out goals and go for them.

I got into running when I was a Freshman in college. I always played sports but used running as a way to get in shape. The lacrosse team went on crazy “LONG” runs of 5 miles. Ha. I was miserable and lonely and running made me feel good. It still does! :)

Reply

one summer i spent being a nanny for kids in spain. it was fun but a bit boring/lonely at times — and the kids were driving me nutso! so i decided to fill off of my time and emotional space with running which led me to register for my first marathon. funny to hear how people get into it!

Reply

My excitement and enthusiasm for a twix has not waned yet.

Reply

In my humble opinion, there is no better candy than pb cups!!!! Simply the best :) Getting them for Halloween made my night!

I love farro too! I just tried it for the first time a couple weeks ago at the Whole Foods salad bar! Yum!

Reply

Reese’s and snickers!! Always have been and always will be my favorite. I’m a big scaredy cat and cannot do any type of scary movie. I don’t even like Scar/the hyenas from the Lion King!!!

My husband is the one that encouraged me to sign up for my first race (other than the occasional 5k), but it was his best friend that got him to sign up.

Reply

Smarties and Oh Henrys!

Reply

My friend Camille was doing a Race for the Cure 5K in support of her mom who was then fighting breast cancer. She invited me to be on her team, even though the race was down in Louisiana and I was living in Connecticut. There was something in me that couldn’t say no, so I signed up, having not run more than a mile in my entire life (and that was more than ten years prior). I could not imagine how much it would have impacted my life back then

Reply

They are all good.. I just can’t decide.. but I can tell you the ones I won’t eat.. anything with coconut or black licorice.

I started following some bloggers that made running in races seem super fun and exciting. I signed myself up for my first 4 mile fun run and was hooked.. So thanks you were one of the reasons I started entering races!

Reply

My favorite is butterfingers, who can resist peanut butter and chocolate…ahhh!

I’m not a huge fan of scary movies, but I will watch them with my husband. I like to joke that it makes me a good wife :)

I signed up for my first 1/2 marathon right after my Dad was diagnosed with lung cancer, that is when I decided to start running. It gave me a way to stay focused during a difficult time.

Reply

I love farro!!! I cook it up and top it with copped fresh tomato, fesh parsley, a bit of lemon juice, avocado and Parmesan cheese! It’s fantizzle!

Favorited candy, Reese PB cups…. That will be my dinner tonight, with a side of Reese’s pieces for variety.

Reply

What is going on with that pinata picture? Both people behind her look like they could be upset that she won lol

Reply

I love Reese’s!! Reese’s Pieces are the BEST <3 And Mars Bars, but those are an Australia thing and aren't sold here in the US :( I have so many friends who go to BYU and it's crazy to think they could be running into you around Provo and have no idea!

Reply

All the people at my school were running the Ottawa Race Weekend, so I decided to randomly join in on the fun! I had only just started running again a few months prior. I haven’t stopped since :-)

Reply

Reeses Peanut Butter cups trumps all. And I put my Twix in the freezer and eat them a few days (okay, few hours) later.

My mom convinced me to sign up for my first half-marathon! Nothing like the support of your momma to get you going.

Reply

Snickers and Reeses! Which are still my usual go-tos. I believe I had a brief love affair with twixs as well. I always ate the best candy first and left the worst for last (i.e. 3 musketeers and whoppers). This year I’m 15 weeks pregnant and have a wonderful excuse to eat allllllllll the candy, have a 14 month old to steal it from our neighbors with his adorableness and pregnancy means you change taste buds even 5 seconds so ALL the candy sounds oddly delicious this year. HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Reply

haha I just posted a blog post about the best Halloween candy! My favorite is Snickers.

Reply

Butterfingers all the way! It’s taken so much will-power to not go through the bags and hide them so the kids can’t have them! Reeses come in second, but they’re only good frozen!! Especially the bite sized (not mini).

The Exorcist is my favorite yet scariest movie at the same time! That movie freaked me out in HS and the house we lived in at the time did not help!!

Reply

Fav Halloween candy: Almond Joy and Peppermint Patties. I love scary movies (not alone though!) I started running about 4 years ago, and by running I’m mean 2-3 miles a day. Then a little over a year ago my BFF Katie decided to see how far she could run without stopping and figured if she could make it to 9 then she could sign up for a marathon. I did the same thing, made it 9 and decided to sign up for my first half 4 weeks later. I’ve been hooked ever since and I’m running the same full this weekend that she did last year.

Reply

My favorites are Kit Kats and Starburst!

I signed up for my first half marathon the summer after high school with my best friend. Our high school track coaches were doing it and we thought it’d be fun…and then the obsession started.

Reply

Anything chocolate was my favorite as a kid.

My friend from college text me and said, “hey do you want to run a half marathon with me in 3 months”. I said YES!!!!! She said, well that was easy. We didn’t train as much as we should have but we had so much fun!

Reply

I love Reeses!

I also have to say that Farro is THE BEST! I recently discovered it and the texture is so awesome. I’m so glad there’s another fan out there!

Reply

Reeses Pieces will always and forever be my favourite Halloween candy! I’m dressing up like a panda bear for school today and so excited!!

I just absolutely love Hocus Pocus! Not a big scary movie fan so that and Charlie Brown take the cake ;)

Reply

My absolute favorite halloween candy was and still is Twix and Reeses Peanut Butter Cups. I buy lots every year for halloween and then I can’t find it and so we have to go buy more. Inevitably I buy stuff I dont like, give it all out and then just as mysteriously as it disappeared the Twix and Reeses PB Cups reappear and I spend the next week eating them all. For some strange reason this keeps happening year after year.

Reply

any candy with chocolate in it, in particular reese’s and twix. But seriously anything with chocolate, I was that kid who would take everyones unwanted whoppers

Reply

One of my closest friends… her husband is a runner and they decided to just sign me up and pay for my registration and told me later that I’d be running it. I did everything wrong, though… showing up late, wearing cotton, only training on the elliptical. Luckily, it was a 4.2-miler :)
I’m forever grateful for them signing me up!

I’m training for my first marathon a year in advance because I desperately don’t want to suck. I’ve got plenty of half marathons and 5ks under my belt, but the marathon is so terrifying to me that I have to do it. What was your first marathon time? I’m desperate to know.

I signed up for my first 5k as a way to keep myself motivated after my first ever run. Besides, at that point, nothing sounded more fun than a color run. And then 3 months later I was doing half maries in under 2 hours. The rest is history.

I was a chubby kid, so candy was candy, but my absolute favorites were (and still are) butterfiner, twix, and any form of reese’s.

Did you know that in 2014, they are releasing a Butterfinger Peanut Butter Cup? I am so excited.

Reply

Okay so I read your blog fairly religiously (mostly because I share your love of running, candy and frozen yogurt) and so you can imagine my shock when I recognize one of your pictures in the blog! Kate is a fellow streaker (name of our running group!) She had a fantastic costume for ladies night at the running store and deserved 1st place! But you can imagine how jealous others were of the new watch!

My sister got me to sign up for my first half marathon. We were supposed to run the same one but wound up running races at the same time in our home city. It worked for us and got me hooked. my favorite halloween movies are hocus pocus and practical magic!! love love love them. Can you tell I grew up in the 90s? haha

Now N’ Laters and Skittles are the best!

I just tried a farro salad from Wegmans for the first time two days ago and LOVED it. I love the chewy texture! My favorite Halloween candy was definitely a reeses peanut butter cup, but I loved BottleCaps too!

Reply

skittles!!! and like NO HOUSES ever have had them!

I really like the lady in the background of the pinata costume, she does not look amused.

I actually love different candy on halloween than I regularly do, for some reason those little two packs of waxy twizzlers get my heart atwitter. It’s bizarre.

I love farro – I had it with roasted brussel sprouts in a lemony dressing last night as well – it was perfect!

My little boy is dressing up as swiss cheese today. He (and I) are so excited.

I was essentially forced to do my first race by my boyfriend haha It was just a color run 5k but I was such a newb to running and so nervous. I’ve done a bunch since then and I’m happy he coaxed me into it :)

I have discovered Farro as well and it is fantastic – so funny that you mentioned it!
If you have a Cheesecake Factory restaurant near you, they have an AMAZING farro Greek salad…. farro, feta, tomatoes, cucumber, (I have them hold the beets!) – it is so, so, so good! And I’ve found farro in my local grocery and can’t wait to create something yummy with it!

Reply

I just signed up for my first real race, and I just new it was time to stop thinking I was going to do it some day and just do it.

Growing up 3 muskateers was a favorite. But the best part was going around to all my neighbors houses the next day and asking for left over candy. I totally got that idea from the cosby show.

Reply

Snickers, Twizzlers and Almond Joy were my favorite! I started running in college and it was just light runs around 2 to 3 miles. Then after having kids, I decided I wanted to work at getting back in shape and decided to run my first half a year ago and just ran my second half this past weekend. I absolutely love everything about running!

Reply

My favorite candy is mounds. Pretty sure that’s not a popular Halloween hand out choice though!

Reply

Reese’s PB cups. Hands down, best candy ever. And snickers. :) I was running for years before I ever did my first race, and I made it a half marathon. I was running half that distance regularly but I wanted to push a little further. I’ll have completed my 4th half next weekend. That full marathon is still intimidating to me…

Reply

Snickers! I sneak them out of my kids’ Halloween stash every year! I’m a total wuss and don’t watch scary movies. Haven’t yet signed up for my first race, but working towards it now :)

Reply

I did my first race with my Grandma!! It was the Muddy Buddy which is 6 miles of running and biking. It was so much fun!
Happy Halloween!

Reply

Reeses! Also Twix. and M&Ms.

I just had a moment of bravery one day and just decided to sign up for my first half! After that I was hooked and I love racing. 4 halfs and 1 marathon later, I’m a happy girl!

Reply

crunch bars all the way, twix was (is??) a close second. i’m a big fan of 100 grand bars too. scary movies make me sleep with lights on and afraid to be at home alone (yep, i definitely act like i’m 30). this explains why i went to a haunted house with a friend while my husband was traveling for work. oops. my husband gave me the courage to sign up for my first marathon (which is SATURDAY WAHOO!)… he knew it was a bucket list item for me so he started providing me with extra supportive comments about how i should just do it and stop talking about it! :)

I always liked the new weird candy that u only got like one or two of. And those popeye sticks…
My cousin got me into signing up for my first half. I was always so impressed when she would tell me her weekly mileage.

Where is a picture of Brooke in her Halloween costume??!! I’ve been waiting patiently all week :)

SNICKERS! And anything gummy! I accidentally typed Snickerson….must be a leftover habit because my maiden name is Nickerson haha

M & M and Reese. I do not watch scary movies.
My sister, Pamela got me into running and I have to thank her more often for that.

No one got me to sign up for my first race (a half marathon)! It was all me, and I actually convinced my boyfriend to register, too.

Favorite Halloween candy as a kid were Baby Ruth and Reese’s.

I was on the train in Chicago with my then (now ex) boyfriend and I saw a sign for a charity organization that said “We can train you to run a marathon!” I joked with him and said, “Oh look, I could run a marathon. They would teach me.” He laughed at me and said “You could never run a marathon.” We got home that day and I immediately signed up for the Chicago Marathon. I’ve run it 4x and haven’t looked back since!

My birthday is on Halloween so growing up, I thought everyone was giving me candy as a gift. LOL! My faves are Twix and Baby Ruth. :)

Reply

I don’t even remember which candy as a kid. It was all about quantity not necessarily quality. ;-) However, that has changed as an adult. We now fight over the Take5 candy bars.

In fact, I have been known to bribe a child or two for one of theirs….YUM!

Reply

SUGAR BABIES! Closely followed by Lemonheads and Milky Ways.

My best friends in high school convinced me to sign up for Bay To Breakers during my senior year. I wound up having bronchitis and DNS. 7 years later, my rowing coach mandated that we enter the Philly Zoo Run 10K. I’m pretty sure that’s the only 10K race I’ve ever done…and it was my first race.

I used to love scary movies. Not so much anymore.

Last night was THE BEST…I am seriously still laughing. Love you more than you know cute thing! I demand a repeat…and a dollar movie!! xoxoxo

I convinced myself to sign up for all the races I’ve done–I don’t really have any running friends. Wait, let me rephrase that–I don’t really have ANY friends locally, running or otherwise!! Pretty sad, if you think about it….

Anyways, I’m currently training for my first full marathon, and I can’t wait :)

i am OBSESSED with farro.

My favorite halloween movie is Hocus Pocus.

Okay, I have heard too much about this Dirty Diet Coke lately- I need to try one!!! Coconut anything is always a good idea!! As for the candy, I always got most excited for Almond Joys, 100 Grands, and 3 Musketeers :) Still do. ;) Gosh, fave Halloween movie? That’s so hard!! I love The Addams Family and Halloween! I have a love/hate relationship with actual scary movies. I close my eyes through the majority of them, but still enjoy watching them? If that makes sense?

Sodalicious! That is an awesome concept – I would be in some serious trouble if there was one of those around here.

I am not a fan of scary movies at all. I don’t really like being scared out of my pants. Plus I have a very crazy mind and I manage to think about that stuff forever after seeing it. I feel like if someone is crazy enough to make a movie about it then there is someone out there crazy enough to do those insane things.
See, I’m already freaking myself out!!!

I actually signed up for my very first race on my own. I had been running for a while and wanted to be able to say I did a 10k. At the time that seemed like such a long way. Afterwards, I was hooked. I signed up for two half marathons that I ended up not being able to go to which was terribly disappointing. Well this year I got back into the races. I can’t explain the feeling I get from doing them. It is so exhilerating plus I want to do better every time.
Trail runs are by far my favorite – my first 1/2 was a trail run and I wish there were more in my area.

Hi Janae!

Favorite candy = Milky Ways for sure!!

I have a question for you. Did you get any type of certification in order to teach spin? It seems like you’ve been teaching for a while? I’m wondering how that came together originally because I’m interested in instructing fitness classes. Thanks so much!!

Happy Halloween!!!!

I am NOT a fan of scary movies! My heart gets all crazy and I get all anxious. Not a good mix. I’m probably the jumpiest person in the world, so I’ve also been known to show candy, and maybe even a cell phone, rows in front of me in the theater. Bad News.

My first race was a multi-sport relay race. I knew it was coming up and was hoping to find a team. My employer decided to put one together and I immediately sign-up for one of the two running portions.

My favorite candy to get was Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and Milky Ways. Still some of my favorites!

There was an elderly man at my gym this morning dressed as a pinata. So cute!

I’m with you on the Twix and Milky ways.

My husband actually got me to sign up for my first race (we were engaged at the time). It was a 5k a bunch of his coworkers were running and he got roped in so he wanted me to do it too, haha! That was in July 2011 and I ran a 33:33. I’ve shaved 10 minutes off that time since then, so I guess you can say I was hooked after that first race!

I started running cross country in high school mostly to annoy my english teacher (he was the coach) and I kept running it through college because I absolutely adore running. However, I loathe racing. I feel ill just remembering races from college and high school.

That said, I was training for my first marathon but alas injury sidelined me. If my training was any indication, it was going to go very well. (However my huge mental block –> running 6 mile tempos faster than a 3 mile race regularly and feeling great) I dont know that training is that good of an indicator for race results for me. I need to learn to enjoy racing, like I enjoy running.

Random question, but I thought you said you had been running since you were 12 pretty much every day? Did you quit running to eliptical for a few years in there? And had you run half marathons before you ran your first marathon?

Twix and Reeses were my fav! I was 9 at my first race – Cellcom 5k. Did you run xc or track in high school? I love scary movies although I haven’t seen many!
