Running really changes your perspective.

You know your long run is off to a good start when you don’t even realize that you are running until mile 4.  Our conversation was too entertaining to even notice that we were running.

Isn’t it crazy how much training for long distances changes our perspective… two months ago 14 miles sounded like a crazy long run to me and yesterday it felt almost normal?  Running messes up our brains in a good way and we are hooked.

The canyon in October is the best.

After a quick wardrobe change (I wouldn’t wish having to stay in your sweaty running clothes when it is cold outside on anyone) we drove up to SLC for the Hit and Run 5k.  It was beyond fun and I will have a full recap up in a few hours.  PS for some reason my niece was camera shy all of the sudden.

I came home and made a turkey sandwich, got to go do some church things, cleaned my car out and tried to keep as busy as possible (it is beyond weird for me to not be chasing around a 1 year old all day ((that is my favorite way to spend the day)) until dinner with the girls at Guru’s.

Vegetable burrito and sweet potato fries… between those two things I must have had at least 10 servings of vegetables:)

And I got to snuggle baby Ford, we bonded big time last night.

A girls’ night without a trip to The Chocolate would just be wrong.

Just trying to make the picture more interesting by holding up the cakes.  Megan and Candice!

3 inch deep cookie right out of the oven topped with vanilla ice cream really is the way to go.

Hope you are having a great Sunday.  I am going to see if I still know how to sleep in this morning.  I have a feeling I am going to be really successful.

I was just talking about this to someone the other day. Right now as I’m in the met of my training running 10+ miles isn’t a big deal. I look back and think wow. That is a lot. A year ago 10 miles was huge or my long run. Then you talk about it with nonrunner friends and they are as baffled as you are.

That is part of the reason I will always fully believe no matter how fast or slow you finish a marathon that is a huge accomplishment in itself.

Reply

Consider me baffled! I can only hope to know what running 10 miles would be like one day. Keep up the great work, ladies!

I hear you on the sweaty running clothes thing! Never have I felt such bone chilling cold as sweat drying after running.

Reply

keeping busy is a great idea, however I doubt you will be able to sleep in

Not gonna lie — I honestly can’t even imagine running 14 miles, but this is coming from someone who’s never run more than 5 at a time, so almost triple that seems like a big feat. I love that you’ve been seeing so much improvement in your runs though. You train hard, and it’s paying off :)

That sounds like a very successful Saturday! Today is my last long run before my races (yay!) and my injured BFF agreed to bike with me my first hour. I agree, it makes the run fly by. Get some good rest today!

You are so crazy! And I am too I guess – I can’t wait to heal so that I can get back to being a crazy-runner :)

Wait, did you really tell us you ate a three inch deep cookie but not expand on the type of cookie? Blasphemy.

Yes, that is what my focus was on during this post.

I absolutely love reading about your desserts. I am also one of those people who needs dessert everyday! Try to enjoy your sleeping in time today :-).

I am sitting on the floor playing with my 9 month old right now and heading to the Ravens game later. :-)

LOVE that picture of you and your Sis’s family! :)

How funny! Last night I passed the Chocolate on the way home from the cougar game. I was going to ask you if it was good. Now I know! Someday I hope to see you in Provo! Haha now it sound like a stalker. You’ve almost made it through the weekend. Go Janae!

I hate the cold weather because you really do have to change as soon as your done or you get FREEZING.

I love getting to a point where double digit runs are no big deal. Right now they are tough but during marathon training I could do 10-12 before work. The picture of the canyon is gorgeous. I love fall leaves!

Aww what a fun day, that burrito looks awesome!

What a great Saturday! Run with friends, a fun 5K, great food and that dessert?! Seriously, that dessert. I need it. Can you please wrap one up and send it my way? And you might was well throw in a side of those sweet potato fries.

What a beautiful view!
I agree that our brains are tricked into thinking the distance is short. 14 miles was my “shorter” long run this week and it felt weird to only run that!

Reply

I can’t wait to hear about the Hit and Run! Looks like so much fun! I’m up before my alarm for my half marathon this morning. Can’t wait!!!! :)

Good luck today!!!

Glad you have friends, family, and fun stuff to fill your days! Utah landscape is beautiful.

Looks like a day filled with great friends, great food, and tons of fun! Have a great day — the reunion is just around the corner :)

Love the desserts! I woke up thinking about two things- chain sawing and desserts. Do you know how many desserts one needs to fuel a good day of chain sawing?

That’s my Sunday today! Chain sawing, letting my arms rest, and then making dessert for the family. Now … should we have lemon dessert, chocolatey ones, or someone what healthy ones (homemade granola and ice cream)?

Hmm…

Oh sleep… what is that? Heh, I’m pretty successful with it too, when I get a chance.

I’m so envious of your running group! It must be nice to have so many good friends to share the miles with :)

The shift in perspective is a very funny thing. I love how flabbergasted some people are when you tell them how many miles you’ve done in a day, when it doesn’t seem that far at all! People are also shocked when I tell them that I walk, on average, about 10 miles a day at work.

Reply

What church things did you do? It sounds like your ward has a ton of activities! We hardly have enrichment (erm I mean relief society meetings) in my ward anymore.

Hope you have a great Sunday!

Hey!!! Going to the temple:)

look like fun and glad your long runs are feeling normal! i hope to get there one day but for now i shall struggle with my 3 :) i will now also spend the morning convincing my husband that a 3-inch cookie IS acceptable for breakfast. yum.

It was great to see y’all up the canyon! You’re right….it was unbelievable beautiful this morning. Glad you ladies gad a good run :)

The scenery on your long run looked amazing, we went for a hike yesterday to see the leaves and I am definitely a little bit obsessed with Fall. Today is Canadian Thanksgiving so we are going to me making a turkey today with stuffing, mashed potatoes, etc. I can’t wait!!

Have a great Sunday, I hope it flies by and you get Brooke back in your arms before you know it.

I love your running buddies pic! You are going to get that sub 3 for sure! Have a great Sunday Janae!

Reply

Janae, you are beautiful, inside and out!

I love that canyon in the fall and miss it so much. I also miss group runs with friends – so glad you have so many awesome running buddies and wish I still lived there so I could be one of them :) Also, I have a really good feeling about you getting your sub 3!

Happy Sunday!

Reply

Glad your long run went well! Burritos and sweet potato fries sound wonderful :) Miss you friend!

Reply

That veggie burrito!!! I’m so happy that I have a group to run with in the winter. Those 12 mile runs ALONE last year were not so fun!

Reply

I have 14 miles today and I was just thinking: less than a year ago it would have sounded completely insane to be doing this for fun every Sunday… Now I can’t wait for my long run.

Reply

14 miles seeming easy peasy means your training is going in the right direction. Keep going, Janae!!! And I’m so jealous of all the delicious food you eat on the daily. It all looks so, SO good!

Reply

I love love the chocolate!! I think I need to go and get my pazookies fix real soon. Great job on the run!

Reply

Sounds like a fun Saturday! I have never one more than a ten mile long run but hopefully that will change in the near future. But I definitely know what you mean about our minds tricking us into thinking that what used to be long to us isn’t anymore :) I love that feeling!

Reply

That picture of the canyon is gorgeous!

Reply

Probably a reason why I’ll never be a marathoner – I can’t fathom running 14 miles and considering it a regular distance :-p
Annd of course, drooling over that cookie.

Reply

looks like the perfect saturday! glad you had a successful run :) and yes, running really does change your perspective, although i think 17 miles in one day is insane. ;) my farthest running distance has been 13 miles (during my half marathons – the most i ever ran during training was 9).

Reply

Looks like you had a great day filled with good running, good friends and good food!

next time we should skip dinner and just head right for dessert. Sad I had to miss out on the Chocolate!

but so glad you got quality bonding time with Ford.

I’m excited to hear your recap of the Hit & Run race…my husband and I are registered for one in May!

Reply

That looks like one epic cookie! How you you resist when it’s still warm and topped with ice cream?

Reply

A 14mile training run then a 5km race. You are mad! Did a half marathon in Munich today-best organized race I’ve done- fab atmosphere and route! Now celebrating!

Reply

Wow I hope some day I will be able to run 4 miles before even realizing I was running!! ;) It’s so the opposite right now for me haha! But you are a rock star, so that’s just what you do. :)

xo

Totally know what you mean about running messing with our heads. Now I think it’s totally ‘normal’ to run at least 10 miles a day…but when I tell people they look at me like I have two heads. Ha!
Today will be a wonderful day…reunited & it feels so good :D Thinking of you all weekend!

the canyon looks gorgeous!
Also, the guacamole on the burrito is calling my name…

Hi janae,

Long time reader here. Lately I have been so bored during my runs. I know that sounds funny but i have been just bored. . . Tired of my music. . . Tired of my books on tape. I don’t have any runner friends who run during the times I can run. Do u have any ideas for how to combat running boredom? Future post perhaps? I don’t know what’s been wrong with me lately. I usually love my run.

Hello! I have been reading your blog for about 6 months now. I love reading about your day to day life/run/eats! I ran a half marathon today and improved my time by 6 minutes! (1:50 to a 1:44). Your blog served as a great motivator throughout my training… :-) So thank you! And you seem like such a sweet person. Thank you for such an inspirational blog!

Reply

Amanda!!!!! Huge congrats!!! Way to take 6 minutes off, you are rocking it! Keep me updated on how you are doing!

I remember last year after training and running the marathon anything less than 16 miles seemed easy and stress free. It totally changed what I considered a ‘long’ run. I can’t wait to hear about the 5k. Sounds like so much fun. It was so good to see you and hang out with you last night. Love spending time with you girls. I may have drempt about both my dinner and dessert last night. ..it was all so delicious. I would be happy if we hit up both those places weekly. Mmmmm.

The worst thing ever is when your dryer doesn’t dry your clothes all the way so you have to go workout in a gym with a fan blowing directly on your legs when your wearing damp leggings. SO uncomfortable!! Can’t wait to hear about the 5K!

Reply

That actually sounds like the PERFECT Sunday! I so wish I could be there to run with you guys, it looks like so much fun and I can totally relate to the whole, “there is no better way to spend the day…” a) you are with friends b) enjoying gorgeous nature c) feeling so alive and pushing your body d) feel so satisfied, happy and relaxed afterwards. Running Rules! I have just been slooooowly getting back into it and I just ADORE it. Almost as much as I adore you and Brookers…

You sure are keeping busy until you get to chase around your little sweetie pie. XOX

Ps Happy Thanksgiving from Canada! We are cooking up a big turkey dinner with all the fixins today AND tomorrow.

I love how long runs become so much more manageable when we mentally know we can complete them!!

Reply

I hope that I get to a place where running more than 3 miles is the norm. I’m starting a half marathon training, so I hope that helps me up my mileage and become comfortable with running more miles. I’m not too worried about the time right now, just the distance.

Reply

This post is so true. A year ago 12-13 miles seemed like nothing, but after being sidelined by an IT band issue, I’m slowly rebuilding my mileage… so even 10 seems like a lot! I’m glad to see it keeps getting better. :)

Reply

The most I can run right now is 8 miles. I did it in 68:31 which is 1 minute faster than I did it last Tuesday. A PR for me! Its hard for me to find the time to run longer because my kids are usually in my office begging for breakfast by then. Id like to try running outside. I just need a garmin (im obsessed with the #’s too) and a way to take my huge (I love it) samsung note with me. My husband always wants me to take my phone if im going to be outside alone so early in the morning.

I am DROOLING over that cookie. DROOLING!

Looks like you had a pretty good weekend. Hopefully you get to see Brooke soon!!
