A very good financial decision and what I look forward to the most.

Have you ever seen the show Cut Throat Kitchen?  It is awesome.  We somehow managed to get all three kids on the same exact nap schedule yesterday so once we put them down my brother stayed at home with them while my SIL and I picked up Subway.

SUBTEMBER= all of the footlong subs are only $5.  It has been a long time since I ordered the buffalo chicken sub and I will be taking advantage of it this month since it is cheaper than normal.

We ran errands and my nephew had to make the biggest financial decision of his life.

I think he is happy with his investment.

IMG 0994

When we got home we started prepping our dinner by first marinating our pineapple in brown sugar.

IMG 0995

And getting the lettuce ready to grill.

DSC 6164

It sounds weird but grilled romaine lettuce is the best.  We just brush olive oil on both sides of the lettuce and put it on the grill for a few minutes and then when you flip it top it with parmesan cheese, salt and pepper.

DSC 6173

Earlier in the morning my SIL and I promised each other a Dairy Queen trip after dinner so there was no backing out.  While in the drive-thru line I asked my Twitter BFFs what flavor of Blizzard to get and the S’mores flavor suggestion caught my eye.

I can’t thank you enough to those that suggested the s’mores blizzard.  Please go get one before they stop making it.

DSC 6175

I think I am having a harder time than Brooke with the idea of getting rid of the bottle because I look forward to our cuddle/bottle/talking about the day together on the floor every night more than anything else.

Nope, just a Mommy in training for the next couple months ;)

I love grilling pizza! It tastes so good. I’m getting ready for the marine corps marathon, even though I wish I was recovering from running the disneyland half on Sunday…

right now i am just running but end of October starts my training for my FIRST MARATHON!! holy crap!!!!!

Reply

I love grilling pineapple. Pineapple, steak and salmon…oh and sweet potatos. I’m pretty sure I live on that sort of dinner combination most days of the week. Subway 5 dollar footlongs saved me so many times at work last year.

I’m training for NYC but I haven’t really done anything different minus adding a few more miles to my long runs ha ha. I’ll get too antsy any other way really.

Reply

Oreo Blizzards are my favorite…Sometimes I mix it up and get Oreo cheesecake!
Right now, I’m running to run. My next race is in November so I have some time to ease into training.

Reply

That smores blizzard looks amazing and I bet it would be my favorite if I tried it! My favorite now is the heath bar brownie blizzard. YES. PLEASE. :)

Reply

Oreo cookie all the way!!! But I occasionally like to try other blizzard flavors too. Love love love grilling salmon with a bit of honey spread on top. Training for marathon #3 in December and hoping to PR and BQ!

Reply

Double fudge cookie dough, yum!

I love grilled vegetables!

I am training for a 1/2 in San Francisco in October and a full November 3rd (Ah!)

Reply

When I was pregnant I got the brownie batter blizzard more times than I am proud of… I need to try smores!

Reply

That grilled lettuce sounds awesome I wanna try it!

Reply

my fav blizzard is the tropical one- can’t remember the name but it’s got pineapple, coconut, and banana! sounded like a strange combo at first but it’s so good :)

Reply

I remember how hard it was to pick something from those little candy machines! And my parents didn’t make it any easier by refusing to give me more than $1. This is probably the second or third time that I’ve heard of someone grilling lettuce, and I thought it sounded kind of strange at first, but I may just have to give it a try… For now, grilled corn on the cob is my favourite thing.

Reply

Love the glow of the orange ligths.I hope you get some snow but not a major blizzard. Forecast here is for flurries tomorrow night.Merry Christmas!

Reply

I have never heard of grilling lettuce but that looks awesome! I will have to give that a try before summer is *officially* over…Grilled salmon is my absolute FAVORITE thing on the grill, with vegetable/chicken kabobs a close second. And thanks for the heads up on Subtember. I may be taking advantage of that soon too :)

I think I am running a half on Saturday…still kind of deciding because I haven’t done a ton of running lately but I’m definitely doing a half in mid-October so this one coming up may be a good ‘practice’ :)

Reply

Hamburgers are definitely favorite grill item of all time!
We sadly do not have a Dairy Queen anywhere near us.
I have just finished my Triathlon season this weekend and my next race is the Corning Wineglass Half Marathon.
I need to figure out a way to switch over to training for it. Not sure how to do it.
It will be my first 13.1 distance if you do not include the 13.1 I ran in my half ironman. or my death march as I like to call it.

Reply

Yum! I never thought of grilling lettuce. I would so eat that. Then again, I’d eat just about anything with parmesan cheese.

Even though missing out on bottle cuddle time is sad, we do a book-reading cuddle before naptime and bedtime and that’s just as special. We say a little prayer together and it’s definitely my favorite part of the day (thought it’ll definitely be easier for the two of us to fit in the rocker when I’m not massively pregnant–due next week!).

Reply

I’m googling DQs in my area now. I’ve seen the s’mores blizzard on pretty much every blog out there and since it’s my favorite dessert, I need to try it. I’d say steak is my favorite thing to grill. Oooh and pizza! My mom makes the best grilled pizza ever. Breakfast time, food is clearly on my mind right now.

Reply

mmmmmm….grilled pineapple!!! I love Oreo anything including blizzards!
My favorite thing to grill is steak and chicken.
I am training for the Kansas City Marathon in less than 7 weeks!!!!! :)
I make a Ceasar salad similiar to what you had that is soooooo good. I will have to post the recipe!!!!!

Reply

I just put together my get back into running plan! There is a half marathon I want to do in April as my first notable race post ACL surgery. I am so excited to start it next week!

Reply

I LOVE DQ’s Frozen Hot Chocolate…if they even still make it. I will definitely be trying the grilled romaine lettuce thing. Sounds so good!

Running to train, but having a hard time with my shins…..

Reply

Yes I have had the s’mores blizzard…I think it’s my favorite! Right now I’m preparing to do a my third half-marathon…coming up in October!

Reply

I like to have white corn in the husk grilled.

No blizzards for me…

Training to race :) Can I run brag for a second: In my 10k on Saturday I PR’d and I placed 7th in my age group out of 802 and 41st for women out of 5132. I’m super stoked!!!

Reply

I am not a blizzard fan! But when I was younger I lived off the mint smartie blizzards.

I love BBQing potatoes on the grill with lots of seasoning and garlic and onions mmm.

I’m running my fourth half this Sunday! Super excited!

Reply

Smores blizzard sounds interesting, I had a chocolate chip cookie dough blizzard on the weekend and it was so good. Cookie dough is always “old faithful” for me, can’t go wrong.

I’m thinking about registering for a half marathon this fall, probably October. I have had some knee/back pain lately from running so I am hesitant but if I foam roll and stretch like its my job before/after every run I think I can swing it with minimal pain.

Reply

Brooke is such a cutie pie! Smores is my favorite Blizzard too!

Reply

My fav would have to be the peanut butter cup one, but I have had the S’mores one on my list of ones to try so I will have to try it out! That grilled romaine lettuce idea looks amaz!! I was running to train for a race but with a hectic schedule of late, I have resolved to running to run and see how that goes before I commit to a race.

Reply

My favorite Blizzard flavor is the mint oreo one and my favorite thing to grill is burgers. Don’t tell anyone that my kids had a bottle until they were about 2 – just one a day in the morning when they woke up – because, like you, I had a hard time giving up that cuddle time with them.

Reply

I’m running to run. I’m also finally starting to work on some speed. I know I have the endurance and now I want to pick up the pace.

Reply

I need to get on the Smores Blizzard, I haven’t tried it yet!

Reply

I have never had a blizzard…of any flavor. Shame on me, I know.

Reply

I’ve never had a blizzard haha but that one sounds amazing!! I use to be addicted to Wendy’s Frosty, but that was only because I didn’t have a DQ near me and I didn’t know of it, I guess I was sheltered when it came to ice cream haha. Grilled lettuce sounds so weird, but oh so delicious!! I’ll have to try that sometime. I just run to run :) Well at least right now.

Reply

yum! I love grilled pineapple! So good! and that blizzard sounds pretty good too :) Cute mommy/daughter cuddle time.

Reply

I’m training for my first half marathon in Staten Island on 10/13/13. Are you still coming to NYC in October?

I’m a big college football fan and my team, the UT Longhorns, are playing BYU this weekend. It’s in Provo, Utah and I thought of you!

Reply

That is awesome! Yes! We should meet up!

Reply

My favorite blizzard is pretty standard, vanilla ice cream and reese’s pieces. Sometimes I like to try other candies but nothing compares to reese’s pieces. I love to grill everything. It’s so much easier than cooking in the house. Right now I’m running to run and although I’m just starting, post-injury, I’m REALLY enjoying it!

Reply

Oh Butterfinger Blizzards are my fave!!! They need more DQ’s in Utah…there’s not nearly enough.

Favorite thing to grill? PINEAPPLE!

Reply

I don’t have a favorite blizzard flavor…does all count? :) My favorite thing to grill is vegetables, any vegetables will do, just lots of em!

I’m training for a 1/2 in October and then will be starting my Boston Marathon training in Jan.

Reply

I have been hearing all about grilled romaine lately and definitely think I need to try this out! Looks amazing. I am semi training…I don’t have a running race coming up but I have a stair climb in November that I really want to rock so I have been stepping up my running as a way to prep :)

Reply

Don’t listen to anyone about when you should give up the bottle. Take your time and enjoy the bottle time. I do mean when Brooke gives up the bottle!

Reply

I like this comment a lot.

Reply

It is hard! Once my son tried a sippy cup, he refused the bottle (literally, he switched over in one day). I thought for sure it’d be a long process and I’d get to keep doing at least a morning and evening bottle…but nope, he was done :( Waaaahhhh where is my baby going?! :)

Reply

Grilled pineapple really is the bomb dot com. I have heard about grilling lettuce, but have yet to try it. I am sure I would have to do it myself when Ross is not around because he would claim that the grill not be used for such things ;)

I am so glad someone suggested smores. I was going to, but by the time I saw your tweet it was hours afterwards and if you were still in line deciding which flavor to get, well, that would mean you have some serious decision making problems.

Thanks for the heads up about Subway. I haven’t been in a long time, but I think with $5 foot longs, it will have to make an appearance or two this month on our menu plan. Hope your run today is less hot than yesterdays and you have a great day! Keep giving Brooke the bottle and cuddling with her at night. If she is 4 and still drinking from the bottle, then I will hold an intervention for you ;)

Reply

I heard the S’mores blizzard was fantastic – I have not had a blizzard in years and years!! Not many Dairy Queens near me actually although growing up they were a staple – Blizzards and cherry dipped cones – YUM!!!! I think back in the day there was a mint oreo one that I loved and my brother always got the one with Nerds candy in it!

I actually love grilled veggies like Zucchini! Also grilled fish – salmon – yum!

I JUST signed up for my first ever half marathon. Freaking out. So i’m currently training for that!

Reply

Favorite blizzard flavor is PB cup.
Favorite thing to grill is corn.
I was training to run a November marathon, but I’m not running at all right now due to unexplained shin pain. Hoping it’s not too serious so I can get back to training SOON.
That picture of Brooke is too adorable!!

Reply

Rock n’ Roll Philadelphia 1/2 on September 15th.. going crazy already and it’s only a few days into my taper!

Reply

I love the oreo blizzard. It’s the only one I’ll order!

Reply

The picture of Brooke snuggled up to you is so sweet! Snuggling will still happen with or without the bottle. If she isn’t ready to give it up, then don’t rush her. There’s no rule that says you have to stop bottles at one. She will transition when she is ready. Wait until she starts talking and can tell you things. Every night I ask my son what he is thankful for, and he lists three things. Some days it is legos and superheroes. Other days it is his grandparents or something fun we did. Then we pray and thank God for everything on his list. I love it. It is just a great way to end our day.
I’m a major chocolate fan. I love the chocolate extreme blizzard. We don’t DQ that often, so I tend to stick to that. We’re getting an Andy’s later this month, a frozen custard place that I loved when I was in college, so I’m sure I’ll be going there for my favorite cookie dough & caramel concrete.

Reply

My favorite blizzard is the chocolate blast I think- with brownie chunks and chocolate chips. But I haven’t had one in forever. I have not tried the s’mores one. Maybe…

I’m training for a half marathon next month. My first. So I’m training to get the miles in. My next one in the spring I want to run in under 2 hours. It will give me something to work towards over the winter.

My favorite thing to grill is shrimp. There’s just yummyness that doesn’t come through when you cook it in a skillet. Grilled pesto shrimp tonight! Yum!

You don’t have to take Brooke’s bottle away… And taking it away doesn’t mean cuddle time goes away. Don’t let other pressure you into doing what you/Brooke aren’t ready for. She’ll continue to get the health benefits from drinking a bottle at night. I think you guys have been through enough that keeping the comfort of the bottle (for her and you) is perfectly fine. But just my 2 cents :) (ps- I’m still nursing my 1 year old very often- and I will blow up at he first person that urges me to wean her- we aren’t ready :))

Reply

I will have to try that grilled romaine… looks delish!

My favortie thing to grill is definitely kebabs… any time food is served on a stick, I am generally happy about it.

Right now I’m in the throes of training for my first full mary(!!!) but I have a half at the end of the month to distract me ;)

Reply

Grilled romaine IS the best. That s’mores blizzard looks amazing. I always order a blizzard with Reese’s Cups AND cookie dough. :)

Reply

I’ve never heard of grilling lettuce, but that really does look delicious.

You really can’t go wrong with any of the blizzard flavors.

Reply

Never even thought about doing that with Romaine lettuce… totally giving it a try!!!

Reply

The smores blizzard is amazing! Be careful-they’re addicting!

Reply

Never had a smores blizzard, but man o’man I love the Butterfinger ones. And Snickers. Actually, I’ve never tried one that I didn’t love.

Reply

Just running to run right now! I like the freedom of not having to do a certain distance and being able to do what I WANT to do, but I am starting to miss the hard-core training that I do for a race. This is a busy time for me anyways though, so it’s good to be running less miles. Later this fall I want to really ramp up the miles again and do some long 30-mile trail runs in the mountains on the weekends!

Reply

My favorite things to grill are shrimp and asparagus.

Currently training for the Chicago Marathon!! And then 2 weeks later I’m going to run the Rock ‘N Roll St. Louis Half Marathon with a friend to help her finish her very first half!

Reply

I haven’t ever grilled lettuce, I’ll have to try it, it sounds delicious.

I usually get mint oreo, but I’m boring like that.

I’ve learned with my kids that just because they’re changing and growing and some of my favorite things are falling by the wayside doesn’t mean that they aren’t replaced by new and even more awesome things.

Reply

I love anything put on the grill. It sounds weird but I think I just like the taste of the “char” on anything! My favorite blizzard has to be the chocolate chip cookie dough or the funfetti blizzard they had last summer!

Reply

Grilled romaine sounds good!!

I love the heath blizzard–sooo yummy!

Reply

Promise me that sometime you will try the mint chocolate chip Blizzard! :-)

Your grilled romaine lettuce looks good. I never would have thought of that.

Reply

Peanut Butter Cup all the way!
I’m training for a marathon too!

Check out where I get all my running gear! http://expertbrand.com

Reply

Grilled lettuce- will try that!

Reply

You’re the second blogger to recommend the DQ S’mores Blizzard today. Guess I will have to hit up the local DQ and see what all the fuss is about! YUM! Considering the fact that I inhaled WAY too many s’mores around a campfire last week and am still hankering for more, this is an easy assignment!

Reply

Asking me to choose a favorite Blizzard flavor is like asking me to choose my favorite cihld!

So how about asking me which child just painted happy rainbows and unicorns on an appropriate canvas (not the wall) with something non-toxic? Ah, then that would be peanut butter cup!!

Favorite thing to grill? Does roasting marshmallows count???

Reply

That looks Delish. I am trying the grilled romaine as soon as I can. My favorite thing to grill is CORN!! Yum!
I am training for a relay that I am running with 5 other ladies! We gave a team of 5 energetic Utes and a lone coug!

Okay a Blizzard needs to be in my near future. And Brooke’s little hand is giving a thumb’s up! So cute!!

xo

Reply

I’ve actually only ever had two Blizzards in my entire life, and the last one was about 5 years ago. I know, sinful. I need to get on this ASAP.

Reply

The cuddling at bottle time is what I miss most about having little ones. Don’t rush getting rid of the bottle :).

Reply

You are in Arizona!! Yay!! If you need someone to get FroYo with or if you want to run like a turtle, I am your girl!!
Enjoy your family time.

Running to train for Ragnar Napa on the 20th!

Love getting a vanilla Blizzard with Reese’s pb cups and Butterfinger :)

Reply

I had to try the s’mores blizzard, and I was anticipating it to be great, but it wasn’t. Oh well.

I like training for races, because it gives me a focused plan to follow. Otherwise I’m all over the place!

Reply

I grew up LOVING the chocolate chip cookie dough blizzard. The best part was always the bottom. I’d eat it as slow as possible and save all the cookie dough bites, so it was like a little gold mine! Now I need a DQ trip…

Reply

My husband makes a mean grilled salmon! That with some veggies, yes please. And I’ve had grilled romaine before, its pretty awesome.

Not training or running right now! Just walking and doing pilates and yoga during my pregnancy.

My favorite Blizzard flavor is the Turtle Pecan Cluster. Simply the best!

My favorite thing to grill is pineapple and peaches and most veggies. So good!!!

I am running to run and am pretty happy about it most of the time.

Reply

The grilled lettuce is no joke. Simple Caesar salad. Yum!

I’m training for several races. I have a marathon at the end of September and then one in December, plus three more half marathons for the rest of the year. I even have 6 races I’ve registered for in 2014. Running all the time!!

Reply

I like pretty much anything grilled but I love grilled asparagus or a hamburger done on the grill.
I love Oreo Cheesequake but I’ve already decided next time I’m going for the Turtle Pecan Cluster.
I’m training for my first half at the beginning of November.

Reply

I tried the S’mores one and really liked it, which is weird because I don’t eat marshmallows. I like their turtle blizzards, too. Or the strawberry cheesequake! I love grilling portobello mushrooms, zucchinis, or any vegetable in general. I’m training for a 10-miler in October :D I’m running my first 5k next Saturday (I started with a half marathon as my first race) and am excited/nervous!

Reply

Yes I love grilled Romaine too! There’s a few restaurants around here that offer grilled Caesar salads, they are great!

Reply

Your dinner looks delicious — I’ve never grilled romaine before, but it sure looks good!

My go-to blizzard flavour is definitely Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups — can’t go wrong!

Reply

My little guy is the same age as Brooke and I don’t want our night time snuggles to end either!!!!

I’m really pumped to try grilled romaine, never heard of doing that until now. Sounds genius! :)

Reply

Janae – I have to tell you that during my 15 mile long run on Saturday, all I could think about the whole time was your s’mores bars recipe. I had never made them before but you have posted them so many times that I felt that I just had to try them. I picked up the ingredients on Saturday on the way home from my run, immediately made them, and proceeded to finish off half of the 9×13 pan in the course of 3 days all by myself. I brought the other half to work today and everyone in my office has stopped by my office to rave. Thanks for sharing your recipe!!

Reply

I’ve never grilled lettuce. I might need to try that though. I had to laugh when I saw your nephew with all the candy options. My kids love those as well, but if my son gets to choose we could be there all day while he tries to decide, and then he’s never happy with his choice.

BTW, why does Brooke need to give up the bottle? I’ve only ever breastfed, but since it’s perfectly acceptable to nurse until 2, I would have thought the same is true for bottles.

Reply

My favorite blizzard flavor is simple and classic: Reese’s Cup. Yep, that’s it. Second place goes to the Snickers Blizzard. I need to find a DQ.

Reply

I’m training for the half marathon in Melbourne in October and have some sort of high hamstring issue. Off to physio today. Please keep your fingers and toes crossed all is going to be ok!

the s’mores blizzard is my new favorite! it is SO good!

Reply

I just got the smores and it was HEAVEN. I love the idea of that dinner! And I am currnetly training for many races because it’s xc season!

Reply

I haven’t been to a dairy queen in maybe 2 years?? My favorite thing is their birthday cake.

Reply

you can still have that time together!!!! you could start adding a book or story to it so it is routine when the bottle goes :)

Reply

I have never heard of grilled lettuce but that does sound good to me. I will definitely have to try that. I absolutely love grilled pineapple. I love marinating it in brown sugar and cumin.

The best blizzard at DQ: ‘Cookie Jar’ .

It’s not posted on the menu but it is a real thing and comes with Oreos and cookie dough! SO good!…. Especially when ordered with chocolate ice cream instead of vanilla!

Reply

Double Fudge Cookie Dough. I also love Sonic’s pie shakes!

Reply

I would have never thought to grill lettuce. Looks delish though.

Glad you got the S’Mores blizzard! It is so divine!!

I still do “milk” time with Amelia (who is almost three) every night in a sippy cup. And I don’t plan on stopping any time soon (don’t worry, I brush her teeth after…)

Reply

Grilled lettuce, huh? That’s a new one. I might actually have to try that! I love grilling pineapple. We usually use butter w/ cinnamon but have tried the brown sugar before too. Delish!

Favorite blizzard – probably mint Oreo. It makes me sad that they don’t have DQ in RI but I can always stop by one when I visit family in MA!

Reply

Iwill grill pretty much anything. Asparagus is probably my favorite though!

Favorite blizzard – good old fashion Oreo….It remind me of trips to Dairy Queen with my grandama!
