Race spectating, medals and penny stealing.

The amazing Julia graduated with her PHD on Friday and then ran her 11th marathon on Saturday morning.   What better way to celebrate a huge accomplishment than with another huge accomplishment?  Oh yeah, she also took first in her age group.   She is kind of a big deal.

IMG 0435

I did an 8 mile run first thing in the morning and then Brooke and I drove up to Park City (seriously, one of the most gorgeous places in the world) to cheer on my favorite Utah runner girls.  It is so nice to be reunited with them again even if I didn’t exactly fit in yesterday.

IMG 0439

Brooke was just a little jealous of Rachelle’s WOMEN’S FIRST PLACE OVERALL half marathon award.

IMG 0441

So she stole someone else’s medal.

IMG 0444

We went and hung out with the girls at their hotel for a while and then we all went to lunch at some delicious Mexican restaurant.   The more sour cream the better.

IMG 0455

When the check for the meal came Brooke went to the fountain to take pennies out to pay for it.   Yes, I do understand that was the lamest joke I have ever written.

IMG 0456

You may notice that one of my ways to cope with my situation is going out to eat with friends and family.

IMG 0464

I had dinner with one of my greatest friends ever.  We have been through it all together since we were 15.  She was in town for one more night so I stole her away for salads and breadsticks.   I can’t even begin to count the hours we have spent together sitting in the booths of this restaurant.

IMG 0466

Brooke was clearly thrilled.

Food with friends is the perfect way to cope with any situation :) My metals hang on a 26.2 rack my sister made me for Christmas last year!

Three things I’m doing today: post-wedding brunch in the cutest Vermont town ever, driving to Burlington to see my cousins and Grandpa, and eating at a Dunkin Donuts (since its a necessary part of an Alaskan girl coming to the East coast!).

I’ve been to Park City many times- it’s actually one of my favorite places in Utah! LOVE it! Have an amazing Sunday, Janae!

Reply

I just came to say 3 things:
1) You are so amazing, inside and out
2) Brooke kills me with 1) her blue eyes, and 2) her thighs, and
3) That photo was taken AFTER the marathon? Why do your friends all look so perfect? I look way worse than that after a 5 mile run. I guess I’ll blame it on the Boston humidity…

Reply

Agree with everything Sophie says!!

Reply

Solid as a rock! So glad to see you are getting the love and support you need through friends, food, and family. xx

Reply

Food and family are the best ways to cope with any situation if you ask me! Race spectating is hard for me, especially if its a race I want to run. But it’s always nice to see your running friends kick butt in something you all share the love for!

Reply

Food is a great way to cope;) (For me anyway!) and having your friends and family around is probably such a huge help!
My favorite medal is my one from the Oakland Marathon and the pirate run around my city. They are both huge so that likely has something to do with it ;)

Reply

In the first race picture I thought to myself “is that girl wearing a clock!?” (flipped around obviously)… So glad you clarified what it was :)

Reply

Congrats to your friends! Three things today: 1. Orange sweet rolls for breakfast. Yum! 2. Pool time with my girls! 3. Maybe an afternoon nap.

Reply

I’ve never won any racing medals. Hope to one day!

What 3 things am I doing today? Planning on walking my dog, ordering wedding pictures and adding a blog post on cinnamon swirl bread. :) Fun Sunday if you ask me!

Reply

Oh my gosh Janae- you crack me up so much! You are, by far, my favorite blogger. Seriously, your group of runner friends just finished running a marathon? I look WAY worse after a 5k-lol! Congrats to your friend for winning-amazing! I think it is the best thing in the world right now for you to surround yourself with family and friends, I’m so happy you have such a strong support team! Today I’m doing laundry, a spin class with some friends, then maybe a walk/run later this afternoon so I can ignore the dishes in the sink. I have been to Park City before to ski and you are right it is a beautiful place! Have a great day!

Reply

Tell us more about Utah! So pretty. Is the weather mild. Very hot, muggy and a bit rainy right now in FL. I live vicariously through others’ cooler weather.

Reply

Fantastic! You are still running and eating lots if salads and looking after yourself- that is what is important for you and Brooke.

I hand my medals on the door of my wardrobe- as it’s just for me- however, it’s a bit noisy when I open and close the doors!

Reply

Today, I will…

1. Finish driving to our new home in the PNW!
2. Hug my mother-in-law and father-in-law whom I adore!
3. Watch our daughter be reunited with her grandparents (is there anything better, really?)!

Park City is gorgeous! The hub did the Tour de Park City last year, and he did the Echo Tri this year. We both highly recommend the Echo Tri, but not the Tour de Park City.

Reply

My heat lies in Park City! Outside Magazine just named it the 2013 Best Town!! So true!! Unfortunately, a little to pricey for me, but still a fantastic place to ski and eat :)

Reply

I think you are amazing. I am so happy you have so many wonderful friends and family that you can lean on. Just remember to take care of you during this process. This is something I continue to fail at.

Reply

Three things I HAVE to do today –
1. Run 10 miles
2. Food shop
3. Apply for teaching positions :)

Reply

My kids play with my race medals and they are scattered in various toy boxes, on hooks in the playroom, and on my closet door where they jangle for the baby.

3 things today: strength training, making homemade almond butter, and going for walk with kids and dogs!

I went to park city in the summer when I was in college for an ‘entrepreneur camp’. Beautiful beautiful place!

I don’t mean this to be sappy but you are an amazing person and I’ve loved reading all of the comments especially over the last few days bc it shows how many women follow you, and how many women you inspire, no matter what you are faced with (and its women of all ages!) Well done to you….

Reply

I love meeting up with friends for dinner :)

Three things? Hmm, 1) Church, 2) Rest, 3) enjoy some sunshine. It seems like very little, but I am super excited about it!
I miiiight head to Jcp for some dress shopping, but am undecided about it. I tried on one at Target yesterday that I didn’t end up purchasing and I am kicking myself for it! :)
Have a great day Janae!

Reply

Let’s see three things that I will be doing today: giving lots of hugs and kisses to my grandkids, moving my sewing room from downstairs to upstairs, and cooking a turkey today :) Those bread sticks look to yummy, it makes me crave them every time you show them. It is always good to hang out with friends, especially long term friends. Brooks top is so cute. Cant wait to see the tutorial about your sisters arm routine!

Reply

Brooke looks hysterical in the photo with the huge plaque thing – omigosh I cracked up. I love all photos of her! (My family gets bombarded with them, fyi – she is so cute that I have to show her pics around)

Reply

Today may be the last day my household consists of just two people. We might be taking one of our babies home tomorrow! Today I’ll be 1) playing one last round of golf, 2) going to dinner with my hubby, & 3) cleaning last minute things around the house. It’s about to get fun up in here!!!

Reply

Park city has the greatest ski snow.

As for race medals, at times, my kids use them to play with their barbies. Mostly, they are strewn all about my house and stuffed in odd places. I find them in the bottom of sock drawers, and they are unexpected reminders of races I have run. The only one I cherish a bit is my Boston medal (since I may need it in case my mom falls into a coma – see the movie “Saint Ralph”)

Race shirts, on the other hand, are cherished and I rarely run in them for fear any sweat stink will be embedded in them forever.

Reply

I love race medals. Mine are hanging on the corner of our bakers rack. I have to do my long run today. I didn’t have time to do it during the day yesterday so I went to the gym last night. My key fob wouldn’t let me in for some reason. Oh well. Good thing I’m fairly free today.

Reply

So glad you got to hang out with friends! Three things I am doing today… Rest day, church, and taking Noah on a walk to the park :-) enjoy your sunday!

Reply

Food + Friends/Family = Best Cure-All I Know!

Today (well, it’s already 8 PM here, so…):
1. Squeeze out my running clothes (I just got caught in a tremendous downpour).
2. Decide on something reasonably healthy to fix/eat for dinner.
3. Choose a chocolate bar for dessert (there are at least 3 options sitting in my fridge right now….eenie, meenie, minie, mo….)

Reply

I only have two race medals so far – when I get up to six, I’m going to either frame them or buy those medal displays that you hang medals on. My only contingent for my medals is that they must be for races above 10 miles.

3 things I’m doing today: I am not working out (it’s my rest day)! I’m going to finish my book and I’m going to sit out in the sun with the dogs.

Reply

I only have one medal so far. The other races didn’t give them out. It is hanging between my two closets in my bedroom.

Today I am going to church, going for a run and going on a first date. Scary.

Park City is gorgeous! I have driven through it five times now. The last time I stopped and had lunch there because the views were beautiful and I wasn’t sure when I would ever be back.

Reply

Have fun on your first date!! That’s exciting! (even if it is a little scary!)

Reply

That is a good order to do those things in. And yes, good luck on that first date! Have fun!

Reply

I make Christmas ornaments out of my medals. Just take the ribbon off and put on an ornament hook. You can look up my post about it on my blog if you want.

Three things I’m doing today: going to church, hanging out at my parent’s lake cottage and eating some yummy desserts!

Reply

That is one cool race medal!!! Looks like a beautiful day with great friends. I use my race medals as hall passes for my 1st graders. They think it is cool! My Boston medal is in a frame and I have a closet filled with medals that I am not sure what to do with.

I got in ez ten this morning and now off to Pilates. Taking in easy on a rainy Sunday.

Brooke is adorable! I am impressed with all the restaurants she has gone, too!

Happy Sunday!

Reply

I’ve never been to Utah but I want to go for Cafe Rio and this salad place.

Reply

3 things I’m doing today:
1. Going to the grocery store
2. Doing Bible study because we don’t have church today
3. Spending time with my hubby and little girl! :)

Have a great day, Janae!

Race Medals: toss up between Marine Corps Marathon and Boston. Both amazing experiences.

Today:

1. Yoga
2. Son’s missionary Farewell
3. Eat and spend time with family

Love Park City, I miss the Utah mountains terribly. Texas is great, but they do not do mountains well.

Reply

I only have one forms 5k I placed in but I have a bulletin board for mine and my husband’s bibs & medals.

Today: sleep, eat, go to work :(

Never been to Park City, but it looks like a gorgeous new vacation destination for my family!

Enjoy every minute of family & friends!!!!

Reply

So glad you got to spend some time with your friends.

I keep my medals in a box, my favorite one is from the go girl half marathon it is gorgeous!
Three things I’m doing today.
1) watching The White Queen
2)picking up my son from the airport
3) Eating somewhere yummy for dinner.

Reply

Good food and family/friends make everything better, so I can totally see why going out to eat is one of the ways you’re coping with everything. I’d do the same thing. ;)

I love, love, love Park City! It sure is beautiful. Glad you could escape there for the day and hang out with some friends.

Love to you! xoxo

Food friends and family and te best way to cope. Stay strong janae!

Reply

Today I will fold some laundry, plan some meals for the week, and have coffee with a good friend.

I usually hang my medals on a key rack, but right now all of that is in a box under my bed. My favourite medal was the one I got for my first half marathon: the BMO Vancouver.

Reply

I think it’s great you are spending lots of time with friends and family! That is what you need right now. Today I am going to church with my husband, and then we are going to my parents house to eat lunch with them, and then we are all swimming! Like you, I love family time! :)

Reply

My medals hang on a pegboard thingie. It’s hard to pick my favorite but I will say my first marathon (Steamtown) and my first Boston Marathon.

3 things:
Long run. Check.
Read.
Watch a movie.
It’s rainy here today which makes 2 and 3 perfect.

I’ve never been to Park City but I want to!

Reply

I have a place to hang them. I don’t have a favorite, but I feel like if I would ever get my butt moving and run the St. Patricks Day one, then I would have a favorite lol. Sometimes that’s all you need, is family, friends, and delicious food, nothing wrong with it :) I’m working out this morning, then doing some food prep, homework, then cutting the bf’s dad’s hair, then trying to recover and get this cold over with! Enjoy your day :)

Reply

I definitely cope with most situations by going out to eat with people I love.

Not sure what I’ll be doing today, but right now I’m eating pizza in bed, and I can’t say that I’m not loving it.

Have a good Sunday!

Reply

I’m not a huge medal collector but the one I got for my first half that I did with Rylee is awesome. It is the shape of Texas (which makes it amazing in and of itself) and it is the size of a dinner plate.
Three things:
1) Teaching a ladies class at church
2) Watching some preseason football
3) Picking my boy up from his grandparent’s house

I’ve driven past Park City before and it is beautiful. If it wasn’t so darn cold in Utah I’d want to live there.

Reply

I love Brooke’s shirt! I thought it was cute in the 1st picture- but once I saw the back.. adorable.

It’s wonderful that you have such a good group of friends in Utah Janae- and I’m sure you rocked your 8 miles.

3 things today:
1. baking brownies (in the oven right now and smell AMAZING)
2. going to Target
3. grilling out for dinner

Have a great Sunday Janae!

Reply

That medal is HUGE!! I have all mine just thrown in a bin in our bedroom. I plan to get fancy with them at some point. But projects take me forever :)

1. About to go to McDonald’s to get an iced vanilla coffee, because I am currently dog-sitting at my parents and they don’t have creamer and I don’t live like that. 2. if I’m productive I plan on getting some continuing education credits out of the way, since they’re all due in like 3 months. 3. blog reading the rest of the way. Seriously its my favorite hobby.

Never been to Utah!! But your pics are making me want to book a flight. Like now. FL humidity is the pits.

Have a great Sunday Janae!!!

Reply

I have two race medals and they are hanging from piano trophies from when I was younger. Three things I am doing today: drinking coffee, possibly baking, and going to a farmer’s market (it’s raining so I don’t know about this one). Next time, tell Brooke to grab some extra pennies to help me pay for my student loans ;) LOL

Reply

Oh man. That picture of Brooke with the medal is one of the cutest you’ve ever posted!! She’s tooooo adorable. I keep all my medals in a clear flower vase on a shelf so they’re kinda displayed but not really. My absolute favorite is the one from my first 1/2 marathon that signed up for on a whim because it ran through Times Square and I thought that seemed cool. I still get choked up thinking about finishing that. (Especially since i’m struggling to come back from injury right now.)

Anyway I hope you’re having an amazing Sunday and I’m loving all the pictures of Utah. Seems beautiful there!

Reply

I’m glad you have so many friends to help with the bumpy parts of life.

Reply

I’m a new reader, just found out about your blog recently through the Runner’s World event and I have to comment to say that Brooke is adorable!

Never been to Park City, but here’s what I’m doing today. 1) drinking coffee and doing laundry 2) going to the gym for a leg workout 3) prepping some meals for the week. Super exciting Sunday.

Reply

Still waiting for my first medal. Planning on the local Turkey Trot 5k, and then a 10k in December. Highly doubt I’ll be winning a medal for either of those though. Lots of work and miles before that starts happening.

Planning on a long (for me) run this afternoon, then the gym pool with the littles.

I love to go out to eat too, but a) it’s so expensive! And b) I’m having serious calorie trust issues lately. I pretty much stick to prepackaged foods or foods I prepare myself. Don’t want to miss my calorie goal because some yobbo in the kitchen goes nuts with the butter…

Reply

I love Park City, I visit the outlets yearly. Is this a newer race?

Reply

you are more gorgeous by the day! love that you were in PC…can’t wait for my next trip to utah so i can see you!!!!!

Reply

So nice to see you surrounded by friends and people you love.

Hmmm today I ran….ate hummus and later I shall shop.

Reply

Totally jealous of Brooke’s clothes.

Reply

I hope you guys are doing okay with all the wildfires! I saw some stuff on the news and thought about all my favorite bloggers living in the Utah area!

I love race medals! It’s such a fun way of showing off your accomplishments..because bragging about it isn’t enough ;) I’ve never been to Utah, so therefore, I’ve never been to Park City! So glad you had fun :D

Reply

I hang my race medals on a board that says RUN that I made :) I was feeling crafty one day! I love it! 3 things I am doing today, 1. Ran a half marathon 2. I PR’d at 2:10!!!!!! 3. Laying around the rest of the day basking in my PR’ness! No where near your 1:25 but I hope to be there one day!

I have never been to Utah at all but I would love to someday! By the way, I didn’t see ice cream in this post, that is also a plan for my day so I hope you enjoy some too!

Reply

You are amazing! Huge congrats on your PR! Best feeling ever!

Reply

I have so many race medals I don’t know what to do with them. Today I went to church, am going to my garden, and have basketball practice. Going out to eat always makes me feel better!

Reply

I love Park City! We went skiing there several years ago. So pretty and fun! :)

Three things I’m doing today? Going to a detox hot vinyasa yoga class, painting furniture, and snuggling with the kitty while either reading a book or watching HIMYM reruns and blog reading. :)

Reply

Ohhh my goodness, Brooke in that last picture!!! I can’t. Too much cuteness.

Reply

I am saving all my race medals until we can hang them all on our Christmas tree! We’re having a running-themed tree!

Reply

I just keep my race medals/bibs in a random drawer in our kitchen but I would love to display them somehow. Maybe one day I will get around to that.

I love going out for meals with friends/family too, and if its making your feel better I say just keep it going. Salad and bread sticks really do cure anything if you ask me. Stay smiling, you’re really inspiring to the rest of us :)

Reply

However you choose to cope is your thing. If going out with family and friends works for you then by all means. Do it.

This is a relaxing day for me. I have to study for a test for work tomorrow, make enchiladas…for work tomorrow, and run 7 miles with a friend.

Maybe cookies will be somewhere in there.

Reply

1. I don’t have too many but I have them hanging in my room.

2. I ran a 10k this morning and PR’d AND placed 1st in my age group – I am pretty happy about that!:)

Reply

She’s a TODDLER now!!!!! I love it :) My kids did the very same penny-hunting in the fountain at one of our local Mexican restaurants, too! LOL And I am so glad you’re surrounded by such LOVING and available friends and family…that is soooo important and helpful :)

I think my running medals are in a bag in the dining room. I don’t run for the bling only for the satisfaction of a job well done. All my other medals are in a box in the garage. I pull those out sometimes and show them to my kids. My favorite medal is probably the one from winning a hotly contested national championship against archrivals…about a gazillion years ago.

Today: right now watching The Aristocats with my kids, next going to REI to get my now-high-schooler (!) new shoes, later going to the library. Hope you have a beautiful day :)

Reply

What do you do with your race medals? Do you have a favorite one? My medals are hanging on a running/medal rack that a dear friend made for me that says “Run happy. Run grumpy. Run speedy. Run slow. Run a little. Run a lot. Just run.” My favorite is probably my first half marathon medal from Philadelphia last year. After losing 140 pounds and training with Team in Training, I finished my 1st half in memory of my dad in September last year. I also love my Disney Princess Half Marathon medal. It’s so blingy!

What are three things you are doing today? Ran 6 miles this morning. Celebrating my husband’s birthday today. Relaxing and enjoying not working today.

Who has been to Park City before? I LOVE Park City! It’s probably one of my favorite places on earth. I am always thinking about getting back there!

Reply

I’ve never been to Park City but I hear all the time that it’s gorgeous! Isn’t that where the Blend Retreat was held last year?

Reply

I just hang my medals on my dresser mirror in our room but I want to get a medal hanger…time to search etsy :)! I have seen some cool things people have done with race stuff. One of the coolest was a friend of mine made a blanket out of her old race shirts! It was super cool!!!
Let’s see….church, made choc chip pancakes and hopefully getting a run in. Today is usually my day off, but I took Thurs off and that kinda messed me up.

Reply

Have never been to Park City but yay for spending time with friends!

B’s outfit is to. die. for. Love it.

I actually met my fiance near Park City so we have a soft spot for it :)

Glad you are spending so much time with family and friends. Seems like you’re getting well taken care of, and doing quite alright yourself ;).

Park City is great! I would not like to live there, but every so often I rent a condo up there just to hang out with friends. They have some great trails over there too.

Reply

Park City in on my bucket list of places to visit! I love to ski and all the pics look gorgeous!!! Today I went shopping with my mom and fiance, ate a bacon wrapped hotdog topped with mac and cheese, and went to Costco…obviously my dream Sunday ;)

My favorite race medal has a tractor on it. It was from a 5K that I ran with my 10 year old this summer–yes, medals for a 5K, how cool! We keep all the medals on a little hook thing in the stairwell—

Today I did my first open water swim, went to brunch and food prepped!

I just freaking adore you! It was so much fun seeing you and getting to know you better. Thanks for sharing you and Brooke. Lets do it again. :-)

It’s been years since I was at Park City. We need to plan a trip back to Utah to see our friends up in Logan!

I hang my medals on a cafe rod in our basement that I put up just for race medals. My favorites are my Boston ones, JFK 50-Miler, and Big Sur!

Reply

Congrats to Rachelle… that’s awesome!!
I keep all my medals in a box. We had a busy day of travel and a wedding yesterday so we are relaxing today, made eggs for breakfast, went grocery chopping, and catching up on DVR :) Never been to Park City but would have heard SO many great things about it!

Reply

Nothing wrong with a hiatus from cooking! I would do it if I could get away with it, lol!

Three things I’m doing today:
1) yoga because my hips feel tight
2) making fajitas (there goes that cooking thing again, lol!)
3)maybe finally signing up for the Big D half marathon in April in Dallas!

Reply

I’ve been to Park City! During ski season so it was freezing, but I agree that it is absolutely beautiful there.

I also went to the cutest little candy shop down on the main touristy shopping strip. It was called SugarBuzz and I would definitely recommend if you get a chance.

Reply

I have never been to Park City before, But have always heard great things about the place. I just googled how far it is from my house and it is only 10 hours. So it may be worth the trip.
Three things for today:
1.laundry
2. elliptical
3. grocery shopping

Not very eventful that’s for sure!

Reply

“Brooke was clearly thrilled.” That–and the adorable picture–made me laugh so hard lol!!!

What do you do with your race medals?
My first Ragnar medal I turned into a magnet, I love it. My half-marathon one is just hanging on a random nail in my kitchen.

What are three things you are doing today? Going to church, teaching, cooking.

Who has been to Park City before? MEEEEEEE! Love it in summer for the alpine slide and love it in winter for the snowboarding.

Reply

Well, since I’m about to hit the sack, I’ll list 3 things I already did today: 10-mile run, played outside with my kids, church.

I’ve never been to Utah, but it looks fabulous in all of your pics! Not quite the same as looking at a bunch of corn and bean fields here in Indiana! ;)

Reply

My race medals just hang randomly on my bulletin board. Hands down my favorite is my TinkerBell Half Marathon medal!

Three things I did today: Ran a self imposed 10k in 6000ft elevation, went to the beach, caught up on email.

Never been to Park City but I must go wherever that salad bar is!!!

Reply

I was just at the outlet mall in Park City yesterday! And eating out cures all :)

Reply

I have two race medals now. And I just hang them on my wall with my bibs. :)

Three things:
1) Ran a half marathon and PRd!!! (Only by a minute ‘n 10 seconds, but I still did it!)
2) Ate delicious Red Robin food (including a free birthday sundae!!)
3) Went to the movies with the fam! :D

Reply

I absolutely LOVE Julia and am jealous that you got to see her on stay here! There were too many races to chose from last weekend! But, Park City was one of my favorite!

But, my favorite medal so far has been my 2012 Ogden Half. It’s shiny and gold. I think my Grandma thinks I came in first place? But, the first one is always special as well!

Reply

I love Park City! So jealous you got to go up there.
I want to get one of those hanging things to put my medals on and then fill it up! I’m running out of room on my book shelf to display them anyway.
Love you girl!

Reply

That award is actually bigger than a human head! Haha!
Is it wrong to sometimes enter races because they have amazing medals?…If so, then I won’t add that there are four or five races on my bucket list PURELY because of the medals I would receive at the finish!

Reply

Brooke’s little shirt and white pants combo is the cutest thing ever. I wish I had a grown-up version of her outfit. My race medals are just randomly hanging in my room, I need to find something cooler to do with them.

Reply

All of my race medals are hanging on a hook in my office.

Three things I’m doing today are:
1. Figuring out how to fix my work email so I can actually get things done.
2. Going for a run with Bungee.
3. Changing out of pajamas?

Reply

What a great day! Food with friends and family is always a good choice!

Reply

That medal is HUGE!! Love it!!
Those twisty breadsticks….MUST have one day. I have seen the ‘copycat’ recipe on Pinterest, but I feel like they won’t be the same, ya know?

Love you girls- you are way too cute!!

Reply

Going out to eat with friends/family is a great way to cope with things “there’s always time for a cup of coffee with a friend”.

My medals are kind of all over. I have hooks they are hung on but sometimes when I need some motivation I leave one hanging by the door where my shoes are, or bring one to sit on my desk at work. I have a few favorites, some because of the race, some because of the medal itself.

Reply

I guess Richelle doesn’t need to use plates anymore because that medal is gigantic! Congratulations to her!
