You should do this after every run and the Boardwalk.

I did my first double digit run in a very long time yesterday and it went pretty well.  My stomach felt a little weird from the very start of the run but other than it was pretty uneventful and I finished the 10 miles with a 7:11 average pace.  I started at about a 7:40 pace and worked down to a 6:45 pace.  Progression runs are my very favorite because it allows my legs plenty of time to really wake up

I came home stretched, did core work, 8 minute arms, ate and by the time I was done with that everyone was still asleep so I did the right thing and also went back to bed.

Every long run should be followed by going back to bed.   Actually every run should be followed by that.

It was quite crowded in Santa Cruz.

And like always I really wanted to try the deep fried Oreo.  One of these days I will spend $5 to eat an Oreo.

Restaurants that have toys for kids to play with are officially my new favorite.

We went for Surfrider Cafe for a late lunch/early dinner.  I have a thing for buffalo chicken sandwiches with coleslaw on them.  See that mountain of cheese in the back?  That was the amazing parmesan garlic fries.

I have to show you my cousin’s salmon tacos because they came with avocado fries (fried slices of avocado, they looked amazing) in them.

And the best part of Marianne’s is the stylin’ wallpaper.  I had a scoop of the heath bar and the brownie/caramel/fudge/oreo one.

Hope you are having a relaxing Sunday!

I have totally had a deep fried Oreo and they really are good. Splurge one day! You’ll be happy you did.

That ice cream. You’re killing me! I surprisingly don’t love fried Oreos. I’ve made them homemade before but the ones at fairs and things have too much batter for my liking. Happy Sunday!

I am very happy you added “Actually every run should be followed by that” when you said “Every long run should be followed by going back to bed” because that it exactly what I did after my 4 mile run yesterday. I had to run early to beat the heat and headed back to bed as soon as I got back! And it was bliss!

I think you are still successful in your quest to eat icecream every day ;)

Awesome sauce! I wish I could hold that pace for even a mile! Great job :)

I’ve never tried a fried oreo but I’ve tried a fried milky way… amazing. I was supposed to get 14 miles in this week but with moving, a hard 4 hr workout Friday, rain, and work it looks like my body is getting two rest days and a long run tomorrow. I keep telling myself that it’s OKAY.

I love fried Oreos, my cousin makes them every time we visit him and they taste way better than the ones at the fair. You should
Just make them at home and I bet they will turn out great!!! Tell Billy to hang in there my brother is a lawyer and a big time runner so I know how busy they can get. I’ll be praying he passes his patent BAR exam the 1st time!!

I tried a fried oreo once. It’s one of those things you just have to try, just because.

Hi Janae!
First and foremost I would like to say that I’m a HUGE fan of your website. Secondly I would like to say that you at such an inspiration to me! I struggled with an eating disorder for a while and my life was miserable, I was weak all the time I couldn’t concentrate and I honestly just wanted to die about 99.9% of the time. After a few months of inpatient I gained 20 pounds after being 90lbs. As I started to get better i decided to take up running to cope with the darkness that is anorexia, and it worked! One day I stumbled across your website and saw this BEAUTIFUL woman and the bad thoughts came flooding in again. But, just before Made the decision to starve again I saw a post about your troubles with food, and I thought: ” wow look at her! She has a healthy relationship with food and she’s still skinny and gorgeous! If she can do it well… I can do it too!” So thank you janae! Thank you so much for showing me how to be happy! You are absolutely BEAUTIFUL!

P.S thanks also for starting my unhealthy obsession with skittles and candy in general! ;)

Wow! Thank you so much for commenting! I am so so happy to hear you are doing so much better! Running is such an incredible way to cope with things and I love that it is helping you so much! I would love to chat more if you want to send me an email! You are doing an incredible job on your recovery!

I have never tried Deep Fried Oreos, but I love Oreos so I can imagine they should be tasty :)

Glad your first double digit run went well! That city looks beautiful! I wish we had nice places like that around here to go. The closest is about 2 hours away – enjoy your Sunday!!

So happy your run went well!!!!
I have to run 6.5 mile today or tomorrow and I can’t seem to find the motivation! Will def. be looking for some today! :)

Reply

Nice work on your run! There’s nothing like coming back to a peaceful house and getting some relaxing time for yourself!

Also, deep fried Oreo’s are where it’s attttt! Kind of gross in theory, but I promise they’re delicious!

Reply

What a great progression run! Sounds like you executed it perfectly (as well as the post-run recovery stuff). Hope you have a relaxing day as well!

Reply

That is an awesome run!!! Way to go! I am not sure I have ever left early enough to have everyone asleep when I got back.
I want that ice cream!!!!! It looks so good!!

Did you know that today is National ice cream day?

Reply

Ahhhh I didn’t know that! Time to go celebrate! Thank girl!

In Canada it’s free ice cream at Cold Stone if you’re in the first 200 there at 2… not sure about there!

That is the coolest thing ever! I will have to check on ours!

Great run!!!
My legs always feel so tired when i run lots… I miss when my legs felt fresh for a good long run!!!

Reply

I love when you have pictures of Billy and Brooke! They’re so sweet together :) I’m sure you will, but do make sure to review the fried Oreo when you finally try one! I live in Texas, and the home of the original fried anything you can think of, but fried cookies and candy generally freak me out, haha.

Reply

Looks like a fun place! Not sure I would try the fried Oreo. What if it was bad and then every time I wanted to eat a regular Oreo, I thought of the bad one and then Oreos were forever ruined for me?! That would be tragic.

Reply

I’ve never had a deep friend oreo but my parents got one at the Houston Rodeo one year and I’m pretty sure they liked it (how can you not!)

Reply

JANAE. You HAVE to go back right now and get a fried oreo. HAVE TO! They are the MOST INCREDIBLE THINGS EVER!!!

Sorry, I am just super passionate about fried oreos. I look forward to the state fair every year, because that’s the one time a year I get to indulge in a fried oreo, I’ve never seen them anywhere. They are seriously LIFE CHANGING!

Reply

Great job on your run!! That average pace for 10 miles is no joke! You are amazing!

I have had deep fries oreos before. They usually give you 5..so they are like a $1a piece ;) I wasn’t a huge fan. I felt like mine had too much batter/not enough chocolate or filling flavor. Perhaps I need to create my own :) I have had the deep fried pb&j and I reeeaaally like it. It made the bread super soft and the pb all melty. This year I want to try the Snickers. Basically, I know how to set some awesome goals for myself.

Your tummy probably hurt in the beginning of the run because you were nervous about your first double digit run! But you made it and that’s AWESOME. YAY. And I really want to come eat ice cream with you, Brooke, and Billy at Marianne! The flavors always look so good!

Reply

I haven’t done a double digit run since January but my plan is to finally do a ten mile run within the next two weekends. I usually do my long runs on Sunday mornings, then I like to either make pancakes and go back to sleep, or go back to sleep and then wake up later and go out to breakfast. But definitely always go back to sleep :)

Reply

That sandwich and ice cream cone both look and sound amazing!! Omg! Your hubby is fast!! I bet that run felt amazing for him. I don’t thing I could only just run once a week, I’d feel like I was losing it. Enjoy your Sunday :)

Reply

I completely agree that we should be allowed to go back to bed after our long runs. It should be a rule! :) Great, awesome job on your speedy 10 Janae!!

I’ve never tried a deep fried oreo but, I’ve heard they are really good. Happy to see that you’ve been having a great time with your cousin this past week! xoxo

Next time you are in Orange County – you should hit up the Seabirds food truck – they are a vegan food truck famous for their fried avocado tacos – they are insanely good!

I tried the deep fried Twinkie in Santa Cruz last year. I was in awe! I hate Twinkies, but deep fried changes everything ;)

At our food festival here there is always fried mars bars… havn’t tried one yet though…

Omg. I did the sleep after run thing last week. Heaven. Snuggled right up with my daughter and enjoyed another hour of pure bliss :)

I’ve tried deep fried Oreos and was HORRIBLY disappointed. It was warm and tasted very stale.

Deep fried Mars Bars on the other hand ROCK!!!

Reply

I love Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and haven’t ever but really want to try a fried Oreo too! Congrats on your run!

Reply

Ahh how fun! I love the boardwalk! :) You’re getting me excited for the Fair!! I definitely agree that going back to bed after a run is a great idea. We should make that mandatory.

After reading posts like this, I really want to live in California :(

Reply

We used to make deep fried Oreos in college all the time, just dip them in pancake batter and fry! We also experimented with twinkies, tootsie rolls, snickers, leftover Easter candy… :D

Reply

Omg! Please try the deep fried Oreos! I don’t even like Oreos and they were amazing!! I actually just got home from a half marathon and I’m about to take a nap!

Reply

I couldn’t agree more that every run should conclude with eating + shower + getting back into bed. Every time I do a long run at the break of dawn on the weekend I climb right back into bed :)

Reply

I love the picture of Brook completely wiped out from all of the fun

Heath bar ice cream is my favorite! I make it homemade and it is killer!!

Long runs+heat=napping all day for me! That’s my new summer routine: long run+eat+nap+eat+nap… I know, a very productive weekend! HAPPY SUNDAY!

The Santa Cruz posts are total childhood flashback for me. I totally know the wallpaper you are talking about at Marianne’s. Marini’s also has delicious sugary treats and ice cream. They are on the wharf, downtown, and at the Boardwalk. MUST try Morenos for tacos and quesadillas.

Reply

Sometimes I try to go back to bed after I run but I can’t because running makes me awake for the day! I eat ice cream everyday too – it’s a food group haha! And I totally go someplace a million times until I find something else to go to. Same thing with making my own meals.

Reply

Marianne’s Ice cream is AMAZING. I had their watermelon sorbet/sherbert/what ever it was that didn’t have dairy and I could have just kept eating it for eternity. I seriously need to head back there!!

Reply

Avocado fries….yum…must try to recreate

Reply

Hey! You were in my neighborhood again! One day I’m gonna see you :)

My Sunday was gloriously relaxing. After my run, I pretty much lounged for the entire rest of the day. It was great.

Reply

Speedy run! I agree, every run should end with a nap. It’s part of the run, I mean we’re supposed to recover right?

Avocado fries? Sounds like heaven! Seriously. I want to go to there.

go for the oreo!!!!!!! you will NOT regret it!!!!! omg we had them at my spring fling every year and it was a once-a-year splurge that was incredible.

Santa Cruz looks like a beautiful place!

I was at the Boardwalk on Sunday! Too funny! It was so crowded, we didn’t last long. But we had a great day. I couldn’t believe how easy the drive was from SF, we’ll definitely be going back.

What a fun day! Get the fried Oreo!!!

I was in Santa Cruz 2 summers ago and REALLY wanted one of those Oreos too! I did not get one and still regret it…
