Santa Cruz Firecracker 10k Race Recap

Before we talk about the race recap I have to show you my favorite race outfits from yesterday.  Awesome.

DSC 4587

I found out the hard way yesterday that I actually was signed up for  a trail 10k.  Okay, so it was a little more than half trail and then the rest were roads but over the 6.2 miles we climbed 950 feet.  I didn’t take my phone with me so the only picture I have of the actual race is this one below at .7 miles into the race.

6:23, 6:27, 7:49, 7:59, 6:22, 6:17 and about a 6:10 for last .2  (I bet you can’t tell where the 2 mile hill was that will leave my legs sore for at least one week).  42:33.  6:51 average pace.

So the hill.  Going into the race the only thing I knew was there was one really hard hill (no elevation chart on the race website).  After going uphill for about a mile I reached a sign that said ‘Welcome to the Hill.’  I thought that meant that I had gotten to the top and accomplished THE hill.

Nope.  It meant WELCOME as in you are about to go straight up for a mile.  I kept telling myself that the flat doesn’t make me stronger…the hills make me stronger.  Added bonus was it was on a dirt trail and it was hot but we have to train our brains to like the hard parts of running.

Photo 5

The course support was incredible.  There were a trillion signs and volunteers all along the streets and the trail. There were a few water stations and the scenery was amazing.  Do the Firecracker 10k next July 4th.

My girls:

And I met up with the incredibly speedy Laurel and her mom.  We are going to do some training runs together, I can’t wait.

DSC 4610

About the PureDrifts.  They ARE my new racing shoe.  They offered plenty of support for the roads and trails but they were crazy light and fast.  I did have to stop and tie my shoe once during the race because I didn’t double knot them.  I know.

I ended up taking 1st overall for the women (even though Brooke is trying to take all of the credit.  I am also standing up there with the 1st place 5k winner).   It was a blast and I got an iPod shuffle which is perfect because I recently gave up on trying to find my last one and I love the shuffle.

DSC 4622

I had my normal bread with jam and gatorade before the race and then as part of your race entry fee you get an incredible all you can eat breakfast afterwards.

DSC 4615

Brooke now has TWO teeth and she has a thing for pancakes just like her mom.

Thoughts about the 10k…love it, like it, never want to do it?

What have you been eating before your races?

What is the prettiest race you have ever done?

Pancakes or waffles….you have to choose one.

Wow, I am SO impressed with you! Those other girls look really speedy and you won!! Way to go Momma ;)

How come none of my races ever have breakfast like that afterwards? Plus you won an ishuffle?! That is such a great prize. Congrats!

Reply

WOW, Janae!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Definitely would choose waffles, but I adore pancakes too. Before races, it’s always toast with nutbutter and just about 1/2 cup of coffee and water.

Reply

Congrats, Mama – great race!

Reply

I love the 10k!!! I have raced 2 so far this year. And so far the prettiest was this past Sunday along the harbor on Lake Michigan in Kenosha, WI.

I usually eat a slice of multi grain bread with PB before my races. But with a half marathon coming up I need to eat more.

I will choose pancakes everytime!!! With REAL maple syrup and tons of butter of course :)

Reply

Wow, congrats on your win! I like to eat an egg and english muffin sandwich before a race, and usually a banana, too. I choose waffles! I love to make sweet potato waffles and put fresh raspberries on top!

Reply

Sweet potato waffles!!! I need this recipe!!

Reply

Here you go! :)
2 c. bisquick mix
2 tbsp. brown sugar
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. ginger
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1 egg
1-1/3 c. milk
1 c. mashed sweet potatoes
2 tbsp. canola oil
1 tsp. vanilla
Combine dry ingredients in one bowl. Whisk wet ingredients in another bowl, and then stir into dry ingredients.

Enjoy! :)

Congratulations on your win! The 10K is my favorite race distance!

Reply

Wow you are awesome! Congrats!! Brook looks ADORABLE! Definitely pancakes- chocolate chip pancakes!

Reply

That is so awesome! Congratulations lady :)

Reply

That’s awesome Janae! Looks like a great race and Brooke looked very patriotic and proud of her mom. Is she ever in a grumpy mood? Her smile is infectious!

Reply

I looked up Burgers 2 Beers locations looks like you have to come to Cleveland for a burger on a donut:)

Reply

I’m planning on doing my first 10k on Labor Day. Hopefully it goes well…!

I’m bad about eating before races. They’re so early that I usually forget. When I do remember, I have a piece of wheat toast with natural peanut butter and sliced banana on top.

2 of my races are tied for prettiest. My first half marathon ever was in Athens, GA and it was all around the most perfect college campus and city ever (biased, I know. Oh well :)
The second was this March when I did the Atlanta half and it took us through the prettiest parts of Atlanta- not the scary parts like some other races in Atlanta…!

Pancakes or waffles… Probably pancakes, unless I’m at Waffle House. Waffle House has the only waffles I like- and they are AMAZING.

Reply

Congatulations!!! I’ve yet to do an official 10k! I’ve done 5ks, a 15k, and a half – I think my first 10k will be this October :) I usually grab a piece of toast or a bowl of cereal before. Sometimes part of a larabar if I still feel hungry (extra miles lately have made me ravenous!)

Prettiest run I’ve done was the 15k in Jacksonville FL. I had never seen the city before and it has some gorgeous neighborhoods.

PLEASE PLEASE don’t make me choose! I love my pancakes and my waffles….

Reply

Congrats on your race!

I love waffles. That probably explains my love for cones. Waffles and Ice Cream are a win to me!

Reply

Congrats on placing 1st! That’s awesome!

I love the 10k distance – it’s long enough to test your endurance and speed together but still short enough to really test your sprinting ability + it’s attainable for anyone.

Usually I just do a banana and a smoothie before a 10k. If I’m going longer, I’ll add in a bowl of cereal. I actually did a guest post about my fueling regiment today on kellytheculinarian.com.

Waffles….I like the fact that they are a bit crispier than pancakes as they should be!

Reply

Congratulations! That is so awesome! You are one fast momma!!

Reply

Congrats on winning first female and conquering that hill!
I love 10k’s. My prettiest race was a half in Lexington, KY. Tons of rolling hills, horses, beautiful scenery.
Pancakes!!

Reply

Holy cow, Janae. You are so incredible and such an inspiration. To do that well on a course you didn’t know, with that kind of hill is just fabulous. A huge congratulations to you!!!! You should be so proud of yourself.

Did you get a huge trophy, too, like the 5k winner? It seems a little unfair for you to just get an ipod shuffle and she gets a humungous trophy. :)

Before a race I eat a small bowl of Joe’s O’s and a banana. My stomach can’t handle too much else before running.

Definitely pancakes over waffles for me.

Reply

Hi Janae, My name is Ying. I have been stalking you for a long while, and answered a few of your questions. But I don’t feel right if I don’t say hi before post anything more here.

Congratulations! You are so fast!

Reply

Congrats, on your first place!!! Definitely love the pancakes with loads of berries and maple syrup!

Reply

Sounds like an intense race! Congrats on the win! Brooke is too cute up on that podium.

Reply

Congrats on the amazing race! I really love the 6.2 miles, it can be tough for a race, but I think that is why I love it! Before a race I have a GF bagel and some almonds. I like the waffle a lot!

Reply

Wow that’s an awesome time! Especially for trails i can’t imagine that hill seeing how much your time increased. Holy cow. I bet those pancakes were the best form of refuel!

Reply

Wow! Amazing. Congrats on winning the 10k. That must be a great feeling.

Reply

So awesome! Congrats! And I love that Brooke is waving to the crowd, who I am sure is applauding for her. :-)

10K? Never done one, but I want to! I found myself wishing I was doing it after my last race when us doing the 5K were done and the 10K runners were heading back out (double loop for them). I was actually just researching some last night. Think I may have found the one I want to do! We’ll see how my ankle holds up to training.

Pancakes or waffles? Waffles! They have built in syrup reservoirs.

Reply

It makes me sooo happy to see you on that podium Janae!!! Soo proud of you!!!! :) :) :) You were flying!! Great recovery after your 2 mile climb. You really kicked it in for the last two miles!! Amazing.

Brooke’s two little teeth are the cutest!!

The last 10k I’ve raced was 3 yrs ago. I enjoy the 5ks & 10ks but, recovery for those races last a little longer for me BUT, I know they’re so great for improving, increasing speed!

I like pancakes!! Prettiest race – Maui marathon. :)

Hope you had a happy 4th with your family my friend!! love ya xo

Reply

That’s amazing! And you are so modest about your accomplishments. So impresed. Congrats!

Reply

I have to say that I absolutely adore that you took Brooke up on the podium with you – and the fact that she’s waving? Too cute for words.

Congrats on the awesome race, Janae – you really are such a running inspiration. Buuuuut I don’t like you making me choose between pancakes and waffles :P I’d probably have to go with pancakes, though… especially if we’re talking my mom’s buttermilk pancakes with powdered sugar on top. Holy.yes.

Reply

Those race outfits are kind of the best haha. I love when people go all out. It’s amazing.
Congrats on your race Janae!
That’s so amazing you took first overall!

Reply

I love 10km races but they are harder to find. Great job by the way!! Way to rock it :)
I always had almond butter toast and a banana, and water of course.
Probably Banff Marathon – it goes through the mountain parks.
Pancakes of course – they are also less work in my opinion :)

Reply

Congrats on the race!!!

Reply

1. Those outfits are amazing. I really wish I knew those people personally.
2. CONGRATS! Hard hill or not, you did amazing!
3. Brooke is the cutest little thing that I ever did see!

Reply

Congrats on the race, you’re so speedy!! That’s a 10km time that I will only see in my dreams, and with that hill in there too. You’re a rockstar!

I love the 10km distance too.. I have a 15km race tomorrow morning and I have never done that distance before, only 5k, 10k, and half marathon so this should be an interesting one. Wish me luck!

PS. Brookes’ 4th of July t-shirt is the cutest!

Reply

Brooke on the podium is so adorable. Congrats on finishing first–I don’t think I’ll ever finish first at a race. (It’s okay, I’ve accepted that fact already.) I’ve never run a 10k, but I don’t know how much I really want to. I feel like anything less than a half means that I’d have to go too fast or else I’d regret it. :P

Reply

So speedy! Congrats! I vote pancakes :)

Reply

Pancakes vs waffles is a completely unfair question!!!!!!!!!!! But if you are going to force me to choose….I pick pancakes :)
Awesome race!!!! That is an incredible time!!! Way to go! Your training is paying off :)
What a cool prize too! I have only done 1 race where the prize was awesome…$100 and it was a smaller 5k that I got 1st female and won it!!!! I was beyond excited!!!
I have been eating a piece of whole wheat bread with peanut butter before a race

Reply

Wow, awesome race!! You are so speedy. I wish I could come train with you!! Love the podium picture. Glad you got a new ipod shuffle….they are the best! :)

I like 10k’s. I’d rank them as #3 favorite distance. (#1= 1/2 marathon, #2 =5k)
Pre-race: depending on the length, either toast w/ cream cheese & jelly or a bagel with cream cheese/jelly.
Prettiest race I do is also the most challenging: The Quadzilla. It’s a 15k in a nature preserve, so it’s absolutely gorgeous. But insanely hilly.
Pancakes, for sure!

Reply

you are super speedy, congrats on winning!

Reply

Congrats, Janae! Your hard work is paying off!

Reply

Congrats on a great race! I think 10Ks are one of the most painful race distances. Take the 5K, double the distance, and triple the pain! My husband makes the best whole wheat pancakes & homemade syrup, so add my name to the pancake column. YUM!

Reply

Congrats on winning the race! My family ran in the Firecracker 5K, but it was all the way across the USA in Virginia! I’m started to dig the 5K distance! I used to think the half-marathon was too short! :-) I usually eat a banana, and half of a bagel with a tiny bit of peanut butter on it before my longer races; and just a banana for my shorter races. If I’m forced to pick only one, I pick pancakes!

My husband and I ran the Big Sur Marathon several years ago and it was gorgeous! A close second is the Virginia Wine Country Half Marathon in beautiful Loudoun County, Virginia!

Reply

Waffles over pancakes… Unless the pancakes are filled with something like chocolate chips or blueberries.
I’m doing a 10k next Saturday and the course is all uphill. I’m a littler nervous. Congrats on 1st place!

Reply

I’d pick pancakes every time – I can’t even remember the last time I had waffles.

Reply

Yeah!!!! Congratulations for 1st place but also conquering that hill. I think that is a great thing to run through your mind that hills make us stronger not flat place. Im going to remember that one :) That Brooke is so adorable, her hand wave while you are accepting your placement is so cute.

Reply

Pancakes! I wish I could run. Racing looks like so much fun!

Reply

I would love to do a 10k … as soon as I can run 6.2 miles. I can run 5 right now, so I’m working my way up
I’ve never raced, so I don’t know what I eat before hand
Waffles! Definitely waffles

Reply

Congratulations on your first place, how cool is that!

Reply

I want to run a 10 k but they don’t seem to have any around here.

Reply

Haha the good thing about a giant hill is that the miles before and after are usually angled (hopefully gradually) downhill!

Reply

The only race I’ve ever done was a 5k, and I really liked it! Congrats on winning, that’s awesome!

Reply

Congratulations on your race!

I would pick pancakes over waffles every time. Every time!! They are so gorgeous and fluffy in a way the waffle can only dream of.

The prettiest race I’ve ever done is a trail race in the Lake District in the UK. It took you through the English countryside and up along the top of a mountain ridge, where you could see all the lakes. It was amazing.

Enjoy the rest of your holiday!

Reply

I did my first 10k this past spring (I’ve always done 10 milers and above) and I loved it. I was able to run hard(er) because it was only 6 miles and it was over before I knew it :).

Congrats on 1st place! That is amazing.

Pancakes all the way…but choosing between pancakes and french toast would be difficult.

Reply

I’m close to Santa Cruz, so I may just do this race next year :)
Love 10K’s!! One of my favorite distances.
Hmmmm I love both, but I grew up on waffles, so I have to go with waffles!!
Congrats on taking first! You are way to fast!!

Reply

Great job! I love the 10k (I’ve only ran 2, but I really want to run more!) I’d probably vote waffles.

Reply

I think I really like the 10K. I like that you can strategize more than the God awful 5K, but it’s not so long that you’re thinking, “when is this going to end??”

Graham crackers or bagel with peanut butter.

I ran a ridiculously hard trail race earlier this year and ended up spreading out so I was running alone for big sections and it was just gorgeous and peaceful.

Waffles. 100%.

Reply

Congrats on the win!

I would definitely go with waffles because you can fill the little craters with everything delicious!

Reply

Way to go girl!!! Congrats!!!

Reply

Love the 10km!! And I’m a bit biased but I choose any runs here in Victoria as the prettiest :) you have ocean, mountains, forest, beaches… Beautiful!!

I’m a bread with jam girl too before a race :)

And I choose waffles because you made me choose but I definitely love both!!

Reply

Congrats on the win!! I wish I could ask that guy where he got his flag tights because those are possibly the greatest things I have ever seen.

Reply

I figured out that I love 10ks. But, I am not sold on trails. Yet. Way to go!

Reply

How awesome! Congrats to you!
I love the guy in the last picture who obviously thinks Brooke is adorable :-)

Reply

I’ve only ever run one 10k but would love to do another!
I do toast with almond butter and honey.
I’m normally more of a savory breakfast type of girl – but I do love french toast!

Reply

Girl? How do you run that fast? Seriously? I’m not even kidding….

Reply

Wow, congrats on the win! Awesome! Fun to get such a great prize, too. I haven’t tried a 10K but I want to do one!

Reply

I love the 10k distance, you rocked it!!!

Reply

Great job Janae!!! The prettiest race by far was our half in Utah :-) You don’t get that in Texas. I choose chocolate chip pancakes!! Although yesterday Joe made me some Reese’s ones that were pretty stellar!

Reply

Waffles with Strawberry topping
Prettiest race…was probably the Niagara Falls one…we ran past the Falls twice, and the rest of the time still ran along the water

Reply

Awesome job!

I’ve only done one 10K but I keep meaning to do more.

Pre-race is toast w/ PB + a banana.

Pancakes, always pancakes.

Reply

Wow! Congrats on coming in first place for the 10K! Sounds like a tough course.
I want to be able to love 10K’s, but each time has been not so fun… feeling like I can’t breathe the whole time!
Question: Did you do a warm up or anything before the race?

Reply

Wow! Incredible race! That hill sounds tough, but you powered through! Way to go!

I have total race envy this weekend. I’m one of a few runners that didn’t race this weekend. Lame. I’m in therapy to get over it.

Reply

Congrats on the race! :) :) :)

Reply

Great job!!! :) Looks like it was a fun race!! Brookers is so cute!!

Reply

Awesome job! Brooke is always super cute, but I love the pic of her up on the 1st place stand with you! I’ve never done a 10K but want to find one for the end of next month because I have a 15K trail run coming up in Sept. I have a hard time eating before I run, but I don’t run very far yet so that’s not been a problem. Guess I better work on figuring that out. I love pancakes and waffles equally, but when I make pancakes I’ve been making the sour cream pancakes from Pioneer Woman. They are very good!

Reply

I ran a 10k yesterday as well in Ashland, OR. It’s by far the prettiest race I’ve done. There were also a lot of hills. This was my dirt race since moving back to Oregon and my love for running developed in Illinios. So, I’m used to flat courses!
Before a race I have a bananna and peanut butter. I’m kinda superstitious about it. It’s absolutely what I MUST have before a race!
Pancakes v waffles? I go with waffles because I like to put peanut butter in top and I like how clumps of PB get stuck in the holes of the waffle.

Congrats on doing so well in your race!

Reply

Great job at the Firecracker!! Guess what? I have an exciting trick to share with you! A new way to tie your shoes so they won’t come undone! And, no double knotting! I started tying mine this way and they have literally never came undone!

http://www.runnersworld.com/running-shoes/gear-tip-how-tie-your-shoes

I love 10ks! Not as tough as a half but more to it than a 5k :) The prettiest race I have run so far is the Summer Roundup 12k (Colorado Springs), which I am running again on Sunday. The prettiest run I am training for but haven’t run yet is in August, the Pikes Peak Ascent (half marathon race to the top of PikesPeak).

I like to eat a peanut butter and banana sandwhich before I race.

Pancakes alllll the way!

Reply

congrats on first place! that’s VERY awesome :)

i always eat a bowl of banana oatmeal before a race. i normally would pick pancakes, but i’ve had the strongest craving for waffles lately. a waffle maker is on top of my wishlist!

Reply

Go girl! Congrats on first place. It sounded like a tough race but we all know Janae can handle any kind of running.

Reply

LOVE the 10K! It’s managable and you can eat what you want after…okay I do that after any distance race, haha! My next 10K is the Disneyland 10K over Labor Day Weekend. It’s the first ever 10K at DL, Alice in Wonderland theme. Anyone else running it?!?!?!

Pre-race meal: whole wheat bagel/toast, peanut butter and a banana.

Waffles, hands down. I get extremely excited if a hotel I stay at has a waffle maker for the complimentary breakfast…little way too excited…

Reply

Congrats on an amazing race! I can’t imagine running a trail race with a GIANT hill and still keeping such an awesome pace!

Reply

Seriously, you’re my running hero. Congrats!
I would love to do a 10k. I did a 15k yesterday and it felt a little long (as I train for a marathon….) but I think it’s because of my awful hill that I had too. Totally killed my pace!
Pre race I always eat an egg on a piece of toast. Works every time.
Waffles. I’m just not big into pancakes. Sorry!

Reply

Congratulations!! That is wonderful–way to go, Janae! I told you that you would kick trash. ;)

Reply

It usually depends on how soon the race is as to what I will eat. Most of the time it is just a Lara bar or something of that nature. If I was running later on in the morning like if the race started at 10am, I would have a bowl of oatmeal.

Reply

Wow…congratulations! You are SO fast!

Reply

Congrats, Janae!
Prettiest run: the Sydney Running Festival Bridge Run. http://www.sydneyrunningfestival.com.au/enter/bridge-run
You run over the Sydney Harbour Bridge, through the Royal Botanic Gardens, along Circular Quay and finish (most years) at the Sydney Opera House.
Race breakfast: Carman’s oat/fruit/nut bar or toast & Vegemite and a banana. Pancakes all the way!

Reply

Way to go speedy! Love how Brooke is loving the limelight! :)

I haven’t done a 10K before, which I think I would love. There is a local 8k race that I am doing again this year. That is the PERFECT distance!

Have yet to figure out what the best breakfast is for me before a run. I always seem to either eat too little, or something that makes my stomach feel like lead.

Reply

I have never done a 10K! I need to make that a personal goal to finish soon!

That breakfast looks too good!

I love waffles or pancakes, just depends on my mood (although the waffles hold more syrup in their little pools!:)

Reply

Congratulations!

I like frozen waffles (with lots of honey) before an event. But if we’re talking fresh — then pancakes all the way!

Since I call my runs “events” rather than “races” — you might guess why the 10k isn’t my favorite distance. I actually prefer longer –half or full marathons. 10k’s are just too competitive for me — I’m more of a stop and enjoy the scenery kind of gal. (i.e. not fast)

Reply

Congrats!! Awesome time!! I love that you bring Brooke up on the podium with you:)
Can’t decide prettiest race but I’m doing one in the mountains (in British Colombia, Canada) in August which should be breathtaking.

Reply

Congrats on a great race! I love how Brooke has her arm up to accept the award (or wave to her fans). :) I love when races have a good post race eats. Yesterday’s Butte to Butte 10K in Eugene offered local chocolate milk, bagels, bananas, chips and a local trail mix for racers afterward. Not too terrible.

Reply

The 10k is my absolute favorite! Perfect distance, not too short and not too long! I eat the same pre race breakfast that I eat before my morning runs: banana and a slice of whole grain toast with peanut butter or almond butter and coffee! Pancakes all the way! Living in Florida most of our races are near the water so I am lucky with that.

Reply

Congrats on the win! I like the 10k, but for some reason I hardly ever do them. I should remedy that. The prettiest race I’ve ever done is the Estes Park (Colorado) Marathon. It’s tough, but absolutely gorgeous!

Reply

I love 10k’s! They are a fun distance where you can push yourself hard….plus, they are usually held around a holiday where you can dress up and not take yourself seriously if you don’t want to!

Lately before races, just toast or oatmeal.

Pancakes or waffles….you have to choose one.

Reply

By the way – congrats on winning first place!!! So awesome!!!!!!

Reply

Waffles. Always waffles. I love the little pockets of syrup!

I’ve never fun a 10k race, but I think it’s a great distance. I always enjoy my 10k training runs, but I don’t see too many races at that distance. Time to start searching them out!

Reply

Pre race I’m all about that banana with peanut butter! :) Congrats girl, that’s awesome! You’re so speedy!

Reply

Congratulations!! I love that Brooke is up there with you!! :)

Reply

Congrats, girl……you are incredible!!! Even though I will NEVER be quite the runner like you are, I still find some much inspiration in how awesome you are!!

Reply

FIRST?!?! great job!! :D :D :D

Reply

Congrats!!
Pancakes are our traditional post-race breakfast! My girls expect it and it’s so delicious eating without guilt :):)

Reply

Congratulations! That looks like a blast, I’m definitely going to be looking up fun July 4th races for next year!

Reply

Congrats!!

Waffles!!

Reply

Oh my gosh you are way too fast/impressive/awesome/badass!! Never actually run a 10k race, definitely prefer longer distance to shorter distance though. I wish I had a really pretty race that I’ve done, but they’ve all been pretty boring courses AND if it was a nice course, I probably would have been in too much pain/discomfort to notice haha. Oh and definitely pancakes. Specifically chocolate chip, or blueberry, or macadamia nut, or peanut butter. I’d even go so far as to say that pancakes are one of my favorite foods (aside from cereal) because they are so wonderfully versatile <3

Reply

Congratulations!

The prettiest race I have ever done was a half in Annapolis… Those hills kicked my butt. Never ran a 10k but I’m afraid of them!

Reply

Awesome!! So speedy o_O and now I’m curious to try the PureDrifts.

Reply

Congratualtions! That’s amazing. I love that Brooke is waving to her fans! Free breakfast after a race is the best idea ever :)

I love 10ks. The prettiest race I’ve done was a 10k last year in my home town. It was along the cliffs overlooking the sea. So pretty, but so so windy!

Reply

You are awesome and constantly inspire me to work on getting faster.

Reply

Congrats on 1st place! I’d like to do a 10k sometime this year. Defin pancakes!! Pumpkin or chocolate chip…..or both :)

Reply

Girlfre,n you can fly!! Great job pulling those hills and taking 1st place!

Reply

The 10k distance and I don’t get along. In fact, until recently my best 10k per mile was slower than my best half marathon per mile – and now it’s only about 9 seconds faster. Which is…odd. Because I’m slow and tend to go out to fast, you would think that I would be better at the shorter distances because I have less time to tire out, but…not the 10k. I think the distance hates me.

Reply

Pastry chef from Canada ( smore’s bar fan) also loves the 10 K. However, I NEVER come first- very impressive- congratulations!

Reply

Give me a 10k anyday!!! Love them. And when I’m done…..I will take about eight pancakes not waffles. :)

Reply

Congrats on winning your 10K! Sounds like working with your coach is really paying off. I love Brooke’s 4th of July tshirt–that butterfly is adorable! I really enjoy running 10Ks; it’s a good distance and doesn’t take up too much of your day and the recovery period isn’t too bad either. My only complaint is that most 10Ks don’t give out finisher medals like 1/2 and full marathons. I love my finisher medals!

Reply

Congrats!
I still think about your hubby when I double knot my shoes.
My last pre/race meal was half a blueberry muffin and it was perfect.
Pancakes all the way!

Reply

Goo Janae!!! So speedy! That is awesome how you won an ipod shuffle. That is next on my wishlist. I’ve only ran one 10k but I liked it a lot… I’m running a half marathon tomorrow! I ran a 5 mile race on the fourth which was a lot of fun. Before races = toast with pb and banana. I think I’m a pancake girl although I’d take either one anyday.

Reply

Haha – my 5K race last weekend was much like yours – a huge monster of a hill and boom, my pace goes way off (I stopped to walk). It was an out and back, and a runner warned me – but still, the giant hill of almost a KM was yucky.

Waffles!!

Not too sure about 10K’s – I really like the speed of the 5K’s but 10K’s are fun too!

Reply

Congrats Janae!! Awesome race and loooove the pic of you on the podium with beautiful Brooke :) glad you had a great day!

Reply

YOU ROCK MAMA!!!!!!
Whooo hoooo!!!!!!!!
I have never entered a 10K race but I think it would be fun!
I have a 5K on Sunday, maybe a 10K will be my next race :)

Reply

WOW!!! You are incredible, Mama!!!!! You inspire me, and I love that photo of you and Brooke on the podium.

Ben and I just ran a 10k race at the Gold Coast this morning. I really like the 10k distance because it’s short and sweet, and I don’t have to bring any gels or fuel with me.

Normally, I would hands-down say pancakes, but lately, I have had a thing for waffles, strawberries, and whipped cream. Your s’mores look amazing – I love those things and want some now! Enjoy your post-race food and relaxation – you earned it! xox
