Missing a race.

In my grand running plan that I had for myself a few months ago I was supposed to be running a PR marathon today at the Utah Valley Marathon…. but that IT band of mine decided to rebel and so I wasn’t running for 6 very important training weeks.

No marathon for me this morning but there was a relaxing and beautiful morning beach run with Katie.   We are trying to look like we were doing yoga on the beach in this picture.  I don’t know, it was really early.

The views were just okay;)

Hope you are having a wonderful running filled I’ll be back later with a million pictures from camping and eating s’mores because you really do have to eat s’mores when you are camping.

And a random picture of Brooke playing on the keyboard at the library.  She makes her father very proud.

What races have you missed because of injury/sickness?

How was your run today?  Anyone race?  Ever ran on the beach?

My run was quite lovely. I ran a 5k for pediatric cancer, which I intended to do for the sake of the cause and not the race, but I PR’d! Unexpected PR’s are the best.

Reply

That’s awesome! I had an unexpected PR today, too, at a half marathon I was using as a tempo/training run. Yay!

Hi Janae! I’m Mandee, and i’m 18 years old and a new reader of your blog! I love it so much and you have inspired me so much in my running! I’m really starting to love running this passed few weeks and really want to sign up for a race soon! I’m having some hip issues but hoping it quits being annoying soon. I used to HATE running outside and only ran on the treadmill but within the last month or so i’ve started to absolutely love it. I was on vacation in Myrtle Beach last week and ran twice on the beach, it was AMAZING. Just wanted to drop in and say hi and say how much i love your blog and how much it has helped me to learn all about running and everything that goes with it!! :)

Reply

OH and you officially have me hooked on chocolate milk as fuel.

Reply

I haven’t had to drop out of the race *knock on wood* but I have missed a race because I don’t know how to read a calendar and forgot about it. oops. I love running on the beach but it is HARD!

Reply

I missed the first race that I ever registered for! An 8k…because I had trained too hard and hurt my knee real bad. Live and learn :)

Reply

I missed several races my first summer of running because of injuries, since they were on the short side it was less of a bummer because I hadn’t put in months of training (or, much at all come to think of it!) I was injured again last summer and somehow made it to my goal marathon- then spent 4 weeks recovering. Ugh! Luckily a coach, a smarter training plan and some extra experience have kept me healthy so far this year :-)
I had a 17+ mile long run yesterday and it was great!
Have an awesome time camping…!

Reply

I raced in a 5K today. It was not best time and not my worst. It was really humid out which seemed to affect me.

Reply

Ran my first 10K race this morning. Made it in an hour. It was full of hills and misty l plus I had some tummy issues. I have never ran on the beach; too scared that I will roll an ankle on the soft surface. I am afraid to answer the question because of Murphy’s Law.

Reply

I found out I was pregnant 2 weeks before my second marathon so I missed it! She was soo worth it!!!

Reply

I’m still missing ALL the races. I did go for a trail run today that makes me very happy!

Reply

LOVE your shirt! Bright pink is my favorite :)

Reply

Brooke is concentrating so hard on the computer!

I missed the Rock ‘N’ Roll USA Marathon a year ago because of a back injury. No fun! :-(

I had a great run today with my running group and a visiting running group. We had brunch afterward!

Reply

The biggest race I missed was USA jr nationals because I tore my rectus femoris 3/4 away across the muscle where it attaches at the hip. That was by far the most painful injury I have ever had. The doctors advices me to not run because if it tore completely I would most likely never run the same again and have to have reconstructive surgery to fix it. Sorry for the sad depressing story. But I am still running to this day so it all worked out. Enjoy ur runs on the beach!!!

Was supposed to run the Nike Womens Half in SF last Oct but had tendonitis and severe shin splints in both legs so I couldn’t. I was so bummed. But I got in the lottery for DC and ran that last month so that made me feel a bit better! Still would like to get out to San Fran one day though

Reply

Boo IT bands. At least Brooke looks happy on that colorful keyboard!

Reply

Sorry for the missed marathon. I’ve had to mis a few, and I volunteered instead. It was a good substitute, but not nearly as fun!

Reply

Volunteering instead is a great idea Gracie! I think all runners should get out and volunteer sometimes and experience it. Definitely a great idea if you’re injured and can not run to still be a part of the race (:

Reply

Sorry about your missed race…I’m sure you will get that marathon PR very soon! I had to drop out of my first marathon about 5 weeks before the big day due to posterior tibial tendonitis. My doc. assured me it was no joke, and the pain pretty much convinced me I needed to stop. I was devastated and seriously cried off and on for over a week about it. But, I’m starting training again and hope to make 2013 the Year of the Marathon :)

No race this weekend for me, but I have a half marathon that I’m looking forward to next weekend!

Brooke is so adorable and I just adore those cheeks :) My youngest had squeezable checks like that and it makes me cry a little on the inside now that she is 7 and they no longer bounce when she runs.

Reply

bummer about having to miss the marathon today, but luckily there are a bazillion more races in your future! you’ll definitely PR in your next marathon with your training plan :)

i can’t wait to hear all about the camping trip! you’ve officially inspired me to plan a beach camping trip this summer!

Reply

I was sad to miss a local 10K last weekend because of a fussy leg injury. It was on the same trail as my first half marathon and right off the bat it gains 600 feet in elevation (7,000-7,600). I wanted to run it as a “rite of passage,” visiting my first half course a year plus afterwards. Oh well, I’d rather get to the next race healthy!

Reply

I grew up on the coast in MA and always ran on the beach :) it’s my favorite!!

Reply

Beach running is the best! Looks like you guys had a great time!

I haven’t missed a race because of injury but because of pregnancy.

Reply

I sat out of Pittsburgh this past May because of my IT band…. a.k.a. HUGE downer :( I took some time off and eased back in- I start back to training tomorrow and I am pumped!

Reply

Sorry about your missed marathon, bummer :(

I ran on the track today and it was such a nice change of pace. I turned it into a game so I had fun. The weather is so weird today. It’s damp, cold, overcast and muggy all at the same time.

Reply

OMG… have you seen that “Jelly Belly” brand makes sports beans? I just found them and instantly thought of you. For some odd reason you always pop in my head when I walk down the candy isle at the store. Just though I’d make you smile today. But seriously – have you tried the performance jelly beans? I looove JB jelly beans and wonder if the new sport beans are good.

Reply

I’ve missed Brooke’s “Boo” hair!! Glad to see it back! Definitely brightened my mood after studying all day!

Reply

Race was cancelled today :( Nasty weather. Worked out though cause I’m still sick. Hence m Week of Laying Low post on my blog. Very hard to do!

Reply

I was supposed to run a PR and possible BQ at the Newport (OR) marathon on the 1st and couldn’t because I had a funeral to attend. It was a bummer, of course, but it was more important for me to be with my husbands family and support them. There will always be another race!

Reply

One spring break I ran 12 miles on the beach. On the way back I actually had the very thought “if I had a running blog like janae, this is the kind of run I would take a picture of myself after.”
I still came back and took the pic……I am going to look it up now.
Looking forward to the camping recap.

I was supposed to run the Timpanogos 1/2 last year for my 40th birthday, ON my birthday! It was perfect. And then I got sick & couldn’t do it. :( But I paid $20 to move it to this year, so I’m aiming for July 27th. Woohoo!

Today’s run was beautiful. Ran the Deer Creek trail, and then cheered on the Utah Valley Marathon runners for a bit at the end.

Reply

Brooke’s hair is so cute!

I had to cancel two races this spring because of my broken ankle. Both were going to be with my 12 year old daughter. One was a race for females, only. And the other was a Color Me Rad run. Next year!

I’ve never ran on the beach. Yet.

Reply

I ran my first 5k race since being “blessed” with a stress fracture in my shin during the NYC Half back in March. I couldn’t believe how nervous I was and I kept telling myself “its JUST a 5k” but it was a very important 5k for me. I’ve missed lots of training and races that I had planned for myself. I am hoping I can begin my training for my marathon debut in Chicago in Oct. I’m worried I won’t have enough time to train as much as I want, but I can’t afford to ‘over-train’ and be placed back onto the injury shelf. I’m sorry you missed your marathon this morning but I appreciate your attitude as I am trying to think positively. :)

Reply

I have never ran by a beach and I hope to someday:) I did a 5k with my sister who just started running, one for the books:)

Reply

My phone was being a jerk today about playing my music so my run felt a little sluggish. But it was a shorty (3 mi) so no harm done!

Reply

I’m fighting the same battle. I took my longest run in five weeks today and had minor IT band flare at 8. I’m trying to decide whether or not to skip Kona in two weeks or run/walk/cuss it. Doing so will save up for Chicago but c’mon! How can I not do this!

Hey, listen to your coach and not random people like me, but this morning I learned something new. I stopped and did the foot-over-foot IT band stretch right when it started hurting. So that happened at 8, 9 and 10. It WENT AWAY for 11 and 12. That’s never happened before. I’m also hitting the weights really hard to build around that darn band. That seems to help too.

If they ever invent effective IT removal surgery, I’m in.

Good luck, kid.

Running on (or near) the beach is always amazing…glad you take advantage of it!
Can’t wait to hear about how camping went!

Reply

i did a steady 10 miles today and a quick yoga lesson to stretch! i can’t stretch on my own unless i have an instructor telling me to. your beach run looks lovely. i’ve never successfully run on a beach… the sand is too much!

Reply

My senior year in college I trained for my first marathon (Dallas White Rock) – I ended up sick with bronchitis the entire week before the race and didn’t run it!! Sadly, even though that was almost 23 years ago, I still haven’t competed in a marathon – every time I train I end up with a stress fracture.

Reply

I missed my very first 1/2 marathon a couple of months ago because of an ITB injury so I feel your pain. I’ve slowly started running again but it’s not going great. I hope I get my mojo back (if I ever had it). I’ve never camped on a beach so I’m super curious to see the pictures and to hear how it went! We went out to eat today and one of the desserts was a homemade s’more with homemade burnt marshmallow (how do you make a marshmallow?) anyway of course I ordered it-yummy! I always burn my marshmallows on purpose-do you?

I’ve never had to miss a race (knock on wood). I have a half marathon next Saturday that I feel mildly trained for. For some reason, my runs on Saturdays have been alternating with really good awesome runs and oh my gosh I want to die I am going so slow runs. This morning was a not so good run. I was supposed to do 6 miles, but stopped at 3. I am attributing it to running on an empty stomach, dodging sprinklers, and the fact I had the last of my wisdom teeth removed on Thursday afternoon. I thought a day and half off would be enough, but THE PAIN. So I came home, showered, downed some advil, ate some mushy food, then fell asleep on my couch while watching old episodes of Dawson’s Creek.

BTW, the fashion on Dawson’s Creek is hilarious.

Reply

I run on the beach at work a lot and oh man does it work your calves. I’m always so sore I can barely walk the next day. Brutal, let me tell you. I’ve missed lots of races for track/xc for a lot of minor injuries, but I missed a 5k for a more serious groin injury last year. It isn’t fun but the healing makes us better runners in the long run (ha. Literally).

Reply

I have a great (though slow) 12 miler today. I haven’t missed any races yet for injuries (KNOCK ON WOOD!!!) but I’m sure it will happen sometime. Next race is a week from today! woohoo!

Reply

Ah, I had to miss a race today, but just a 10k. We found out our puppy has diabetes and needs to be monitored on the new medicine– quite the excuse for missing a race, haha.

Reply

Ran 10 miles today on the beach in Santa Monica! So many people to watch, it’s entertaining! Plus there are attractive men playing volleyball and that always is a nice way to pass the miles…

Reply

I did the utah valley half! Last night a friend asked if I wanted to take his bib (he got hurt) so on three hours of sleep and zero training I did it. Amd had a blast! It was beautiful and sooo green! I will send you the post race high vibes today!

Reply

Great pictures from beach! Looked like a blast. Last September, I dropped out of a trail marathon because I was 10 weeks pregnant :) Not really “injury or sickness”, but I was sure FEELING morning sickness.

My husband and I had a great 6.2 mile run with our 3-month-old son in the jogger! It was actually sunny and NOT raining :) Have a great weekend!

Reply

I haven’t missed any races but that’s partly because I haven’t signed up for many haha.

Reply

Ick I hate IT issues – I’m still getting over mine too. Training this week has been off as I’ve been traveling so much but my marathon isn’t until October so I think I’m still definitely ok.

My aunt just ran her first 5k this morning! She’s been doing the Couch2 5k Program.

Reply

I spent a lot of my summer last year being injured. It was hard to train for my half in September. V and I have been busy getting our exercise on this week. I worked out twice today!

Reply

Ran a 10k (Bellin Run in Green Bay, WI). The race consisted of 20,000 participants! It was huge! But I had a PR even weaving in and out of many people. Loved it!

Reply

Were you in Half Moon Bay by any chance?? I ran early this morning along the beach trail and I swear I saw you in the camping area with Brooke (either that or you have a doppleganger!).

Love living on the coast and being able to run along the beach every day. It’s amazing.

Reply

Ahhhhhhhhhhh that was me!!!!! You should have come said hi!

Reply

No way!! Oh what a bummer! Next time. I live down here so if you come back we should meet up. Hope you had a great time!

Yes for sure!

Last summer I missed out on a Mud Run cause of plantar fasciitis. I was pretty bummed about missing it cause a couple friends were going to be running it with me.

Reply

I had to miss a 10 k because I had a stress fracture. Not sure if I’ll be able to run my half marathon in 2 weeks….

Reply

Beach running is the best! I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy some incredible beach running on the Gulf Coast, along coastline in Nova Scotia, in Cannon Beach, Oregon, and, best of all, on two Hawaiian islands! Wish I were on the beach now!! And, yes, s’mores are required by law when camping!

Reply

Don’t worry about missing the race, you have so many years to run more!!! I was just wondering if you guys thought that it was bad that I consider 6 miles one of my “long” runs, since its really not that far… In a few weeks im going to start training for my first half marathon so ill be doing longer distances!!

Reply

Oh, sorry to hear it! I haven’t missed a race due to injuries, but I have raced poorly on many occasions due to burnout or whatever else. Not sure what your next racing plans are, but maybe consider Cal International? It’s not until Dec. and appears to be a fast course, although I’ve never raced it: http://www.runcim.org/

Reply

I ran the 5K Rugged Maniac and it was GREAT! Loved all the mud!!!

Reply

Missed three of the same half marathons three years in a row due to injury. Finally conquered it the fourth year!
My run today was a crappy 10 miler where I never found the groove. Frustrating but tomorrow is another day.

Reply

I change my mind all the time about races. So much so that I don’t even pre-register anymore. Obviously I just do little local races…those big ones aren’t for me!

Reply

I was supposed to be running Utah Valley today too. It was supposed to be my first marathon. 7 weeks ago I sprained my SI joint..it connects your pelvis to the back of your hip. Apparently, I got all misaligned during pregnancy, and I was on a run with the stroller one day and my hip went out. My lower back and hip hurt so bad, and I couldn’t even walk for a week. Yesterday I ran again for the first time..,having to start over and miss running the marathon stinks! Hopefully I will be able to run one soon.

Reply

First 1/2today!!! I did the allstate Chicago half in 1:32….3rd in my age group. I was happy. I was secretly hoping on my best day to get 1:30….but 1:33 was my realistic goal :)

Reply

Ahhhhhh amazing!!!!! Huge congrats!

Reply

Thanks! I really liked that distance! I have done 3 fills but hadn’t done a half yet! ….I could have done without the 6 hour drive home we had after it….but it was a pretty race along lake Michigan and we had lunch at walker brothers for pancakes!. Your beach background is great! I love Brooke’s hair like that :)

Reply

I’ve missed TWO half marathons because of the same foot being injured 2 separate times :(

I didn’t run today but I’m going to run tomorrow!

Beach camping sounds like so much fun!

Reply

Janae, such a bummer to miss your race! This was a good post for me to read because I couldn’t run at all this past week due to tendonitis in my left achilles. I probably have a few more weeks of rest before I can hit the pavement. I wanted to run my third marathon this September, but it doesn’t look like it is in the cards if I can’t get back out there soon :( being patient seems to be a big part of running sometimes!

Reply

I ran the UV half today and thought of you missing the full. I was able to PR by over a minute and crushed my time on the same course from last year by 5 minutes, which at the time was a PR. It was a beautiful day to be running in Utah!u

Reply

Wow! You are incredible!!!! Way to go!!!!!

Reply

I injured my IT band and had to miss three races (Virginia is for Lovers 14k, Disney Princess Half, and the Shamrock Half), so I’ve deferred into all of those for 2014. I’ve just started running again, then reinjured myself at the roller skating rink (went with my class of fifth graders as a promotion celebration!)

Reply

Ah man. I am so sorry you weren’t able to run the race you wanted today. And I for sure missed you. But thanks again for letting me use your bib
It was such a gorgeous day and course and I tried to enjoy it enough for the north of us ;)

I have missed the canyon lands half and the Ogden marathon due to injuries. Boo.

You will crush your marathon goals one day…and I will be there at the finish line to cheer you on!! Love you.

Reply

So sorry you are missing your race! Looks like you kept yourself busy, which I’d imagine was helpful, mentally. I DNF’d at Chicago last year due to a hip flexor injury and had to skip a half marathon I had scheduled about a month later. But, now I’m back on track and am getting back to PR shape, which hopefully you will be soon, too! :)

Missed my first ever race (5km) due to depression and a binge-eating disorder. Signed up the following year and smashed it, went off my anti-depressants and just recently ran my second half-marathon :)

Ah I missed 3 races this year : ( A 10k, half marathon trail run, and a marathon. Stupid ACL!! Love how colorful that key board is!

PR’d by 2’17” during Saturday’s 10K! Could have been 3′ but I didn’t push at the end because I didn’t want to eperience dry heaves (as it usually happens). I’m pretty mad at myself now… oh well, next time :)
