The track ate me alive.

I knew I was in trouble when my warm-up had me out of breath:)  PS I went to my old high school’s track….. go Timberwolves.

DSC 2350

On my schedule for today I was supposed to go to the track to do a timed 5k after a warm-up and followed with a cool-down.  My mom came and walked around with Brooke in the jogging stroller while I ran.

My coach told me to go out conservatively and shoot for negative splits (second half faster than the first half).

I thought I was being conservative because I felt great in the beginning but by mile 2 I realized I went out way too fast.

I did an incredible job at positive splits though;)

6:25, 6:35, 6:45 and I don’t know what the last .1 was…. total time 20:30 average 6:37.  My legs positively wanted to die but this will help us see where I am at and how I progress in the next few months.  FYI I literally finished and within 2 seconds I was laying on the ground because I was so tired.

I did a little bit of super slow running with Brooke afterwards.  You simply cannot be sad ever when this is your view (ps don’t worry, she had 12 layers of sunscreen on):

Do you hear angels singing when you see the below image like I do?

I am going to Arizona tomorrow so my mom took me for my favorite salad and bread twists before I left.

The sister is sick today so I took Curly with us and then I am going to pick up the older kiddos from school and take them all on an adventure in just a few minutes.

Curly is already mourning the fact that Brooke is leaving… evidence below:

Mom’s really are the best.  I could hang out with her every day.

Our high school mascot was actually a railroad bridge (the Hi-Liners) – no joke. Peppers of all colors and cucumbers. I haven’t run yet (work first), but I have a feeling I’m going to be really wiped out afterwards…

Reply

Empowered after my workout today :) my longest distance since coming back from a knee injury and although the 6 miles seemed to take a LONNGG time mentally, I felt amazing afterwards. Then, my 20 month old greeted me with huge smiles and snuggles after waking up from his nap as soon as I hopped off the treadmill. Timing was perfect! Talk about endorphins :)

ooh ROUGH!! Good job on those speedy miles!!!
I love Brooke’s chubby thighs ;) (why aren’t they attractive past baby-stage anyways?!) LOL

Reply

That’s hilarious! salad bars are my heaven too – I just wrote about that :-)

High school mascot was bulldogs, and I love going to my old track when I’m in town.

I usually get about even or negative splits. I was better at pacing myself when I started running. Once I became faster, I got greedy!

Staple vegetables: Spinach, carrots, tomatoes, celery and cucumbers

I had a busy weekend so I was exhausted after my workout!

Reply

I was tired but also felt surprised after my run today. I am a nanny and decided to take the jogging stroller out. It was tough and tired me out but much better than I expected. My high school mascot was the Highlander. I was even on the highland dance team. It was a blast and I got to wear a kilt and listen to bagpipes all the time.

Reply

Pacing myself I was never good at, I always ran too fast. Wow that’s a nice looking salad bar!

Reply

thats so awesome you went to the track on your own! i have a huge fear of track workouts by myself and normally find some excuse to do a workout on the roads instead…something i need to get over!

to answer your last question…exhausted! officially done with college track and decided to “treat” myself by allowing myself to go for my longest run ever. runners are so weird. 15 miles at 7:30 pace and i’ve been in bed the entirety of the day…lets hope my legs can move by graduation this weekend!

Reply

My high school mascot was the Gobblers (as in a turkey). True story.

Those curls are adorable!

Reply

You are sooo speedy!! And Brooke and Curly are adorable together!

Reply

Brookers thighs are so cute! I love baby rolls! My high school mascot is the Mustangs. I feel pretty good at pacing myself but I’m no where near as fast as you! I always have green beans, broccoli and couliflower in my house. Today I have an easy Yoga session since I’m recovering, no running for 2 weeks! Is that salad bar from Ruby Tuesdays?

Reply

My HS mascot was the Villains.
I had a huge positive split at a 5k this weekend. It’s hard b/c that first mile always feels so easy, but it can catch up to you quick. I think it just takes a lot of practice to get the pacing right for each distance. plus doing a 5k time trial on your own is not easy.
today’s my rest day and I’m just soaking it in:)

Reply

My workout energized me! I did an hour on my stationary bike and an ab workout (my fave) now I’m going on a movie date with my husband to see The Great Gatsby! SO excited!! :) As for my staple veggies, I agree with you: I ALWAYS have spinach in my fridge! Also avocados and broc :)

xo

We were the Wildcats (spelled wrong, if that tells you anything…) I am actually pretty good at negative splitting! I negative split my 3:15 marathon. It’s mainly because I hate going out fast and feeling super tired from the beginning. I’m a wimp haha.

Reply

HAHA- Curly’s face is hilarious in that last picture.. classic angry kid pouty face! Your family is really going to miss you- they are so lucky to have such a cool aunt.

Nice job on the 5k! That really is awesome for just coming off that injury- plus you did it all alone on a boring track. I bet seeing Brooke’s face as you ran by was great motivation :)

my high school mascot was a Hawk

I always have: cauliflower, spinach/lettuce, tomatoes, and mushrooms on hand.

my workout today was an hour on the elliptical because my foot has been bothering me.

Reply

That picture of Brooke’s legs = precious! Your salad looks amazing. (Goldfish? Who knew?) And I am terrible about pacing myself. Oh well.

Reply

My first high school mascot was the eagles and then the fighting pickles!! Hahaha :)

Reply

A positive split on a track 5k to mark your current fitness isn’t really bad; it still gives your coach a lot of data, which is really the goal. But oh, I also hate that positive split feeling of death. Good for you for not stopping. I posted today about a successful half that I ran yesterday — with a negative split (goal was marathon pace for the first half, and then faster). But a neg split is a rare accomplishment for me!

Reply

We Brits don’t have mascots like that – I feel like I missed out.

Yeah, I’m awful at pacing myself as well.

Reply

Dannnggg you are so speedy! I’m probably real good at positive splits too ;)

My HS mascot: Rams. Veggies always stocked: spinach, bell peppers, carrots.

After my workouts this morning (yes, I taught 3 diff classes), I was exhausted with a capital E! xo

Reply

Well hello speedy legs! I want to take a nap for you just thinking about running that fast! You are amazing! I was energized after my workout, but right now,…that is a different story.

I usually have splits that are within seconds of each other and the same throughout the whole race. I get into a groove and stick with it. I am not so good at pushing myself.

We always have broccoli and spinach. Then asparagus is always stocked when it is in season. I just ate celery through (dipped in PB, of course) and I forget how yummy that is.

What a great way to spend your last day. I miss you already!

Reply

TO be honest, I have no idea what my high school mascot was  My high school was pretty heavy on the academics and we didn’t even have a football team. I want to say that it was some sort of Irishman, buuuuut that’s still a guess. College mascot was a griffon though :)

Staple veggies: carrots, baby greens, tomatoes, and cukes.

Reply

That’s an awesome 5K time coming back from an injury! Way to go!

My high school mascot was the wolverine. I’m not sure why it’s such a popular mascot – they are really ugly animals!

I never negative split, with the exception of one race. It’s an out-and-back trail race, and the first half is all uphill. So, it’s impossible not to negative split. Otherwise I always go out way too fast and pay for it at the end!

We always have carrots, broccoli, and peas in our house.

Felt exhausted after my swim today. Was a recovery day, and boy did I need it! I was really struggling to get the laps in today. But always feel better when I’m done. Plus my husband and I are going out for a pizza date night, so I wanted to workout so I could justify LOTS of pizza and fountain coke!

Reply

We were the Rams! I’m terrible at keeping a consistent pace!!

Reply

My high school mascot was a trojan.

I got back from a bike ride not too long ago, and I’m just plain tired. I think it might have something to do with the fact that I usually workout first thing in the morning, but today it was mid-afternoon.

Reply

Carrots, onions, celery, and cucumbers are my staple vegs.

In high school we were the blackhawks. Good ole BP!

Reply

Our mascot was the Russet. A potato in a cape.

Reply

That is a kick butt time for a time trial on the track! I run a 20:30 on a good day in a race! Positive splitting is kind of my thing. Actually mine usually look exactly like yours did today. Oh well, we can try!

Reply

My mascot was The Eagles, and for some reason I am so tired today, I haven’t even worked out yet! I’m trying to tell myself that I have this afternoon and evening to, and hopefully I will! :)

Reply

I felt great after my run today…until I realized that I was locked out of the house and didn’t bring my cell phone with me. Gah! Finally tracked down a neighbor and was able to call my hubby who came to my rescue. Oh well…I had plenty of time to stretch and cool down while I was waiting for help, anyway!

I’m not so good at pacing….My runs always look kind of like a bell curve, with my first few miles being quick, the middle miles being slower, and then the last couple miles usually quick again (probably because I’m usually very excited to get home and either eat something or use the bathroom!).

Reply

Holy Toledo, you’re fast! Great job on your 5k!! I’m TERRIBLE at pacing and I am also babying an IT band injury. I have a Half Marathon this Sunday and I’m so nervous that I’m going to either (1) be seriously slow or (2) die from IT band pain…Eeek!!

And your salad made me laugh :)

Reply

As hard as I try for negative splits, I always have positive splits. I lose steam by the end :)
My high school mascot was the Eagles!

Reply

My high school mascot was the Wolves! Very appropriate for northern Minnesota.
I think I am okay at pacing myself. Most of my long runs are pretty evenly paced. Track 5ks are my favorites!!!
Staple veggies: Carrots, cucumbers, broccoli, lettuce.

Reply

Bears :)! My splits are always positive :)…I have a major problem going by how I feel :)! Last week I had my best speed workout ever and it was negative mile splits: 6:30, 6:28, 6:24, 6:24, 6:23!…NEVER happens…really never! and 6:23 is about as fast of a mile as I can do! To prove it I had speed work again today (I do speed on Monday) and my miles were 6:25, 6:38, 6:50 and 6:33….whatever, I’ll take it and call it a day :)!
We always have corn and green beans. I always feel so good and strong after speed but also way tired and tomorrows run will show my tiredness :)!

Reply

I’m tired just reading about your track workout!

My high school’s mascot was the Bears.

My staple vegetables are spinach, potatoes and onions.

Reply

Ahhhh brooke’s cute little legs!!! That is definitely not a bad view!

My high school mascot was the Bulldogs!

Reply

Our high school teams were called “Blue Thunder” and our mascot animal was a horse…..Quite possibly the dumbest mascot of all time because a) thunder isn’t blue? and b) the horse wasn’t either

Reply

My high school mascot was the Bombers (B-52 airplane, nuclear bomb mushroom cloud, a bomb itself, etc…) Seriously! The plutonium that was dropped on Japan in WWII was made at Hanford (a gov nuclear site) near my hometown. Go Bombers!

I always have positive splits… my legs are usually dead by the end! And I keep stocked up on grape tomatoes, carrots, and the spring salad mix from Costco.

Reply

High school mascot was the braves. Boring! I’m terrible at pacing myself even though I try so hard. Always end up with positive splits. No matter what. Ugh. I ALWAYS have spinach in my house. I also usually have green peppers and cucumbers..but I forgot cucumbers this grocery trip and am losing my mind.

P.S. Goldfish on your salad? Creative :)

Reply

My high school mascot was the Statesmen(women). Never understood it but that’s what you get at Catholic school I guess!

I’m terrible at packing myself – always have, always will be I think. I used to sprint my first lap of an 800 when I ran track and then die on the second lap. I never learned.

Staple veggies are definetly cucumbers, celery, brocolli and zuchini. I like green things apparently!

I’m exhausted after my workout today. I ran barely 3 miles (I’m 6.5 mos pregnant) on my lunch break at work and felt like I was crawling. Add in a bathroom and water stop and it took me forever! It’s amazing how strangely people look at you when running pregnant. Not sure if they are confused, disgusted or what ha!

Reply

Love those chubby legs view when running.

Reply

You are so freaking speedy! way to go!!!! My high school’s mascot was the Vikings! Pretty good mascot if you ask me…

Reply

High school mascot: a beaver. Yes, I am serious. and it’s terrible.

Staple veggies: baby carrots, romaine and bell peppers.

Reply

Carrots, green pepper, tomatoes
We were the Trojans and hs boys found it hilarious.

Reply

I’m awful at pacing. My middle miles are usually the slowest with the first and last being the fastest. I felt really energized after my run today…and hot! Summer is here :/

Reply

Hahaha Curly looks so pesky! (But adorable, of course.) Great times! I don’t know if we even have an outdoor track in my city.

Reply

My mascot was the Bulldog. If I run my race the smart way like my coach says, I always negative split. Not always, but most of the time. My staple veggies are sweet potatoes, carrots, kale and beets (for juicing), and artichokes. I LOVE crock pot artichokes! Where are you going in AZ?? I live in Phoenix, If you have time to grab coffee or FroYo, let me know! I’m sure I could get some of my blogging friends together! (Ari from Ari’s Menu, Nicole from Marvelous Misadventures of a Foodie, etc!!)

Reply

I’m not very good at pacing, I am always all over the map. I try to negative split, but usually the goal is to simply finish a race/run :) Your speeeedy!!

Reply

First I was a Bengal and then I moved and was a Ranger.
I have a hard time pacing myself. It’s a running fault of mine.
No work out for me today. I’m in bed sick. Booo sickness!

Reply

Pretty fast 5k for
1. Not being in a race with fast people all around pushing you
2. Being at altitude!

Great job!

Reply

I def felt tired after today’s run. But it was a long day!

And I think if I got to stare at Brooke’s leg fat all day there is no way I could ever been in a bad mood.

Reply

High school mascot: the Explorers. At cheer camp everyone thought we kept saying “smores”…which actually wouldn’t have been so bad.

I was exhausted from my workouts and runs last week so I’m taking the whole week off – not even doing cross-training or weights. I think I might go crazy, although I’m proud of myself for realizing when to scale back. Progress :)

Reply

I’m terrible at pacing myself. In races I always go out too quickly and regret it later!

I always have broccoli and courgette in my fridge.

Reply

Great job on your 5K at the track! I recently started doing speed work and even though my total workout adds up to 5 or 6 miles on the track, I cannot imagine running 3.1 miles hard on the track.

High school mascot- Rebels.

I usually negative split in a race, but it’s not because of good pacing. It’s because I am always scared out of my wits at the start of a race, so that translates into a conservative start.

Staple veggies: baby carrots, green beans, peas, and cauliflower.

I was exhausted today and still am. Too much excitement this past weekend.

Reply

We were the Bulldogs! I was actually really energized after my workout today. I was a little sad I didn’t have time to do more.

Reply

Ok I have to ask! How do you craft these amazing and crazy salads and manage to carry them to the table without everything falling off??? Haha!

Reply

High school mascot was the Eagles – red white & blue suuuuper American :)
I just flew into Tucson today! Lol, it is crazy hot so thinking I will be in the gym not outside……

Reply

Our school mascot was a Raider…? And I’m pretty good at negative splits during a race. I divide the race into 3rds in my mind and think about what my goal pace for each 1/3rd will be

Reply

My high school’s mascot and current school of employment mascots are the same—patriots. Ugh I despise track workouts. Good for you for doing it!! I will say that I am really good at pacing myself. I guess teaching aerobics full time has taught me how to do that! I also run w/ my dog 80% of the time and he is an excellent pacer.

Reply

Crazy awesome 5k! I did fartleks during my run and I think it left me just the right amount of tired and re-energized. Have fun traveling and seeing more family!

Reply

Amazing job on your run! Does the track ever give you shin splints? That is a great picture of the salad bar! :) My high school mascot was a Monarch. As in a lion, not a butterfly! Pacing wise it really depends on what I am doing that day and how I feel. During a race however I typically just try to stay in the same pace range after the first 2 miles. We always have brussel sprouts, carrots, celery, and okra. I was energized after my workout!

Reply

We are the Braves :) omg I died after my workout. Like what the heck. I seriously always have the same exact staples as you. Exact.

Reply

My HS mascot: H.L. Bourgeois Brave-try saying that 3 times fast! I’m a horrible pacer-I think it’s a math thing. My go to veggies are carrots and cauliflower. I was very energized after my work-out that I was NOT in the mood to do. Funny how that works sometimes.

Reply

I’m not great at pacing myself and frequently start out too fast and then crash. It’s something I’m constantly working on and it’s getting better but still not great.

Reply

Our mascot were the “horses.”
I did 6 miles today and I am totally beat!!!
Good job on your 5K!
Those are awesome times!!!

Reply

Great job on the 5K!!! I would totally fall apart in the last mile. Or maybe halfway through, haha.
I love Brooke’s legs! Hehehe, so cute and chubby :)

Reply

Your arms look crazy tone! What arm workouts are you doing?? (Besides toting Brooke around all day, I bet that doesn’t hurt! ;)

For me it seems like it’s much easier to pace myself on the longer runs (6+ miles). But it is a HUGE struggle to pace myself for anything much shorter, and almost impossible for me to pace myself during a 5k. I burn out pretty easily, but it works out because by the time I want to collapse I can usually see the finish line!

Spinach, broccoli, squash, and zuchini are my go-to veggies in my house!

Today was a short run and body pump for me, so I’m currently EXHAUSTED and about to head off for an embarrassingly early bed time.

Reply

That salad bad is amazing! Your run is also amazing…a 9 minute mile is good for me :p

Reply

HaHa, my high school mascot was a Steer!

I used to be really good at pacing myself and almost always ran my marathons in negative splits. Now I’m all over the place!

I almost always have spinach, tomatoes, scallions, and asparagus in my refrigerator since those are my favorites.

Reply

Awww Brooke’s thighs ahhahaha!

That salad bar looks like it is to die for!

Whoop Whoop for a great track workout!

Good job on your 5k… you are a speed!

Oh, I definitely hear the angels singing in that salad bar picture. Beautiful. I don’t know about grapes on the salad thing though. Goldfish are smart though.

Reply

The clouds definitely part and angels do sing when I am at a salad bar. My husband is the same, except he goes strictly for the cornbread and chili. In fact, I’m pretty sure he got me into running just so that I’d be down to go to Souplantation more often.

Curly’s face in that last picture is killin’ me. Hope you enjoy your final day in Utah!

Reply

Eagle. Broccoli slaw. :) That picture of you and your mom and Brooke- precious!!!!! Have fun in AZ!

Awesome work on the 5km time trial, that’s a really hard session to do solo. I can’t wait to get back into some serious training! Bubs is onyl 3 weeks old so I have a little bit of time to go until I can hit the track.

Reply

I would love to be able to run as fast as you in a 5k – I’m ran a 6:54 in my last 5k race.

My mascots in high school and college were lame: Trailblazers and Prairie Fire.

I’m getting better at pacing myself, I’ll have to really get good at it in the next month as in June I’m going to be pacing for a beginners running program.

My staple vegetables are broccoli, carrots and tomatoes.

Reply

We were the dragons! Must always buy kale so I can make my favorite chicken quinoa kale soup that I eat for breakfast (can’t stand oatmeal). I have a tendency to run too fast then poop out too soon so my hubby keeps me at a more reasonable pace.

Reply

Rams!

I usually always have strawberries/blueberries, spinach, brussels sprouts, and broccoli.

Amazing 5k time! I hope to be able to run that fast when I grow up ;-). LOL

Have a great time in Arizona!

PS Since I just returned to work from maternity leave (so sad), I read your blog and pretend that I am doing what you and Brooke are doing everyday.

Reply

OH my goodness, I went to the same high school as you?! What year did you graduate?

Doing a 5k on a track is so much harder for me than on a course! Good job!

That is so awesome! 2004! What about you?!?

I rested Monday! I’m so jealous of your super long vacay! I am getting surgery next week (ACL, boo hiss) and my mom is coming to stay with me for a week and I am super jazzed to hang with her. I can’t guarantee I’ll be really nice but I am still excited to hang with her!

Reply

My high school mascot was the Tigers, but college was the Flying Dutchmen.

What are you doing in Arizona?

I’m usually pretty good at pacing myself, but doing RLRF really messed with that, so now I feel off. I’m going to have to re-teach myself to run.

Reply

Pacing? I have a history of being the energizer bunny… my pace is usually similar no matter what distance I’m running…. Speed intervals and progression runs have been helping with this.
Staple veggies? LOTS of peppers, carrots, sweet potatoes, and spinach.

Reply

Mmmmm Jason’s Deli?? Looks like my favorite!

We were the Chemics! I think we were the only ones in the nation…
We always have broccoli and normally asparagus and some kind of lettuce!

I love spinach and bell peppers. Eat them like candy :)
I didn’t work out today because I’m worthless and took a nap instead! Woops

Wow, you’re speedy – great job on that 5k!

My staples are broccoli, peppers, spinach and green beans!

And my hs mascot was the Cougars! Yea, I still have the old cheers in my head, from cheerleading all four years. Lol!

Peninsula Panthers!!

Splits….I’m not good at them….pacing or gymnastics-wise!

I love to have green beans and carrots at my house!
