Is it normal that I already have my running clothes and shoes out and ready to go for my 3.1 mile run tomorrow?  I might be just a tad bit excited.  I think I will go to bed even earlier than my normal 9:30 pm bed time just so that morning can come faster.

Let’s just hope that my IT Band allows me to have a big cheesy grin on my face for the whole run.

This morning’s workout was at a new-to-me gym.  I just started teaching at another gym this morning (still at the other one too) and it was a blast.

After spin I came home and did 8 minute abs and did a stretching dvd that my coach sent me that lasted 36 minutes.  I don’t think I have ever stretched for that long in my entire life.  I think he thinks that if I actually start stretching/strength training/being a smarter runner that I might stop getting injured;)

Speaking of injuries, I read THIS awesome article in Running Times today and loved it.  It talks all about the health continuum, knowing your individual limitations and I especially loved the part about getting proactive with PREhab.

Oh yeah, and the part about Dealing with Devastation (injuries ARE devastating to runners) is a must read:

It’s been a lay on our backs and read a lot of books kind of a day.

And now I am currently debating between making chocolate chip pancakes or chocolate chip waffles for lunch.  It’s Friday and that means you should celebrate by adding chocolate chips to everything you eat.

 ———————————————————————————-

What will YOUR run be this weekend?  (It has been 5 weeks since I could answer this question so of course I am going to ask it:)

Do you:  wear your running clothes to bed, have them laying out waiting for you in the morning or get them out right before you leave in the morning for a run?

Pancakes or waffles?  Be honest.

YAY for running!!! I can’t wait to hear how it goes!!! I wear running clothes to bed. Always. My husband can’t get enough of it let me tell you… Chocolate chip pancakes :-)

Reply

I only do this Friday nights, but it always running clothes including the sports bra………my husband is like “seriously?”

Reply

I have a speed workout tonight, 8 miles on sat and 6 on sunday! Going to be a runfilled weekend :). Glad you get to run again finally it must be driving you crazy.

Pancakes…always!

Reply

Have an amzingggg first run back! You need this :)

Reply

I have a 10k on Sunday…I’m nervous; I haven’t run all week since breaking my 5k PR last weekend, and I’ve been resting. Stupid IT band.

I put all my clothes on a chair next to my bed so no matter how dark it is, I can grab everything and get dressed. I have slept in my running clothes before, but it was for a 4am hike up Masada in Israel, not for a run haha.

Reply

4am hike up Masada sounds amazing. I used to live in Israel–some great running happens there!

Reply

We were able to reach the top for sunrise…seriously awe-inspiring :o) I wish I had been there long enough to get some actual running in!

Reply

My run tomorrow is a 20 miler…at 6am. YAY lol. My mom is coming with me on her bike to keep me company, though, so it’ll be fun.

When I travel for work and have to run super early, I’ll sleep in my running clothes. In normal life, though, I just get dressed in the morning.

Reply

I wear my workout clothes to bed sans sports bra. It’s easier to just get up and go in the morning! I hope your run tomorrow goes well! I’m sending you lots of luck!!!

I love pancakes but waffles win sometimes because you can fill the crevices with butter and syrup and all things delicious.

Reply

Planning around 10k tomorrow, then a training run with one of my trainees.

I definitely plan my workout clothes, and admittedly get super excited over it. I would sleep in them if I could.

Chocolate chip pancakes are the bomb.com

Reply

Maybe I should start looking for and doing stretching videos on youtube. As a student, I feel like I’m always sitting around, and I’ve gotten ridiculously inflexible. And injured. Stretching is such an easy concept to get, but to ACTUALLY stretch. That’s a challenge.

Reply

When my husband is traveling, I sometimes sleep in my running clothes. Nothing like leaping out of bed with no excuses. Although sometimes tying my shoes in the dark has lead to less than optimal results.

Also struggling with an IT band injury; I’m meant to do a half marathon next weekend, and have (a bit late to the party) started pool running. Fingers crossed that tomorrow’s run for you is pain-free.

Reply

Yay for getting to run! I usually put out my running clothes the night before, and I also pack a bag with clean gym clothes to change into right after.

I vote for the waffles ( I actually don’t like pancakes- I know, I know..) And yes chocolate chips should go in everything on Friday- and the rest of the week too.

Reply

PANCAKES! Have a great run tomorrow! Running Santa Cruz on Sunday– beach trip for the Jacobs?

Reply

Sorry I never wrote back to you about Santa Cruz! I have been swamped with studying for my board exams. I’ll have to take a rain check :( However… the Ragnar Trail race looks like SO MUCH FUN. I’ll check my schedule and see if I can make it!

Reply

I am also excited for my run tomorrow….my first in a while due to pregnancy sickness. Also I LOVE those shorts!!! Where are they from?

Reply

I was gonna ask about the shorts too! You are too cute as always!

Reply

Wahoo… good luck on the run tomorrow! I think those sweet Chevron shorts will make you extra speedy (love them!). Can’t wait to hear all about your 3.1 run!

Lately I’ve been wearing my running clothes to bed… haha. Call it obsessed or call it too lazy to change in the morning… it’s up to you!

Pancakes… but only if there are bananas in them. Bananas + chocolate = even more amazing.

Reply

Um, crepes? Can that be a choice :) this weekend I’m going on a “training run”with my mom and dad, since they haven’t run in forever but will be joining me in a 5K this May – SO exited! :)

Reply

Pancakes, always!!
thanks for sharing that great article!

Reply

Waffles, for sure!! I lay my running clothes out too. Good luck and I hope your run goes perfectly!!

Reply

woohoo! It’s not weird at all!! It’s so exciting!!! I will be running 3.1 miles tomorrow too!! It’ll be like a run date! ;) If my knee holds up that is…

Reply

Have fun on your run tomorrow!

Pancakes – every single time. I can’t even remember the last time I had a waffle.

Reply

Yay that you get to run tomorrow! I am running 8 miles both Saturday and Sunday. Taper time for Boston!

I definitely have to lay my clothes out the night before so I can just roll out of bed, change and head out the door without even thinking about it.

Reply

Hooray!!! Congrats! Take it easy :)

I have plans to do an easy 8 tomorrow. But it will have to be on the treadmill probably because of the weather. Boo. For some reason it’s not safe to run during thunderstorms. Pray for good weather!

I’ll say waffles on this one! and sometimes I plan in my head what I want to wear running the next day, too :)

Reply

I totally take out my running clothes before a run. It makes me more excited if I pick out crazy bright colors. I hope you have a big cheesy grin on your face post run. Those are the best.
Oh, and pancakes :)

Reply

I say go with the pancakes for lunch but in all honesty it is a total toss up between which I like better…I am a total carb nut and I just think someone could shoot me before I went on any kind of low carb diet! I would wittle to nothing because I would have nothing to eat!
I would totally lay my clothes out too if I was you! I would have had them laid out for at least a week! And you even have a cool new watch to wear too….I LOVE the purple!!!
If I am going to run early (which will happen more now that it is getting nicer and lighter in the morning) I lay out my stuff….otherwise I just get it out before I run.
I do my long runs on Friday so I had 14 miles today…I was actually worried about it…I have been feeling tight and lacking motivation to do any more than 8 miles. But I did it and survived 14 miles at an 8:19 pace, so tomorrow is an easy day and Sunday is my off day! I NEED to stretch more!!!!!!!!!!

Reply

I added dark chocolate chips to my pancakes this morning :) I am running the RnR SF 1/2 on Sunday!!

For races, I lay my clothes out the night before and double check everything so I don’t forget anything.

Reply

Just tweeted. :)

Reply

What is the name of the stretching dvd that your coach recommends?

Reply

Coul you please post the stretching video?

Reply

Ooo the pancake vs. waffle debate – tough one. I honestly don’t think I have a preference because it really depends what I’m in the mood for. Sometimes it’s pancakes with jam a sprinkle of powdered sugar, and sometimes its waffles with maple syrup. Either way, you can’t really go wrong. And with all this breakfast talk, I think I know what’s for dinner tonight…

Reply

Have fun on your run, it’s gotta feel good after this long!

Reply

My run will be my first half marathon on Sunday! (RNR SF) Eeeeekkk!

Pancakes > waffles every time!

Reply

Brooke is such a smart kid already!! ;) And I would definitely go with waffles.

xo

Reply

I love the color/design of your running shoes!

My run will be 7 miles, with 3 of them taking place during a color run!

For a long run my clothes are laid out waiting for me. During the week I run in the evening so I just grab whatevers on the top of the drawer when I get home from work and change.

Waffles, for sure!

Reply

I’m running a half tomorrow! I never set out my clothes ahead of time and I’m always scrambling around trying to find the stuff I need!

Reply

I’ve been having IT trouble, too, but was able to run 1 mile yesterday and 1 mile today with NO IT band pain!!! I’m sweating on the elliptical, stretching and foam rolling, and even started some strength training and core (worked with a trainer one day this week.) Determined to be stronger before I start building back my mileage.

I think chocolate chip waffles sound amazing!

Reply

Waffles. Hands down. Also I’m currently trying to convince myself to go “run” (ok I really mean a light jog)… Getting off the Internet would probably help yeah? Have a SAFE and GREAT time on your run tomorrow!!

xoxo

Reply

I have a half marathon on Sunday. I was hoping for a super giganto PR but I am now sick. It isn’t bad so hopefully it doesn’t mess with my plans too much. I lay out my clothes at night. I then stumble into the bathroom half awake in the morning where my clothes are waiting for me. As little thought as possible is necessary for me in the morning.

Reply

I won’t be running this weekend but enjoy YOUR run!!! I just put on my clothes in the morning, and also, pancakes :D.

Reply

YAY! Have fun tomorrow!

I always lay my clothes out for the workout the next day-so I can change without waking up my husband (esp if I teach in the 5 am hour!)

Definitely waffles! Big fluffy, Belgian ones!

Reply

Can you make one waffle, and one pancake? I could live in my Brooks running tank. I stole it from my son and it’s a Men’s medium and I love it. I put it on right after work and live it in. I guess should buy a women’s one. I’m bigger chested and I love the coverage I get in it.

I haven’t been working due to my knee. Actually I’ve taken a huge break because it isn’t getting any better. I need to start woring on in it though, thanks for today’s article it really motivates me. :)

Reply

Yes, I wear my running clothes to bed. When I was pregnant with Susanna, they were some of the most comfortable things to wear so why change?

Waffles all of the way especially those made by my Dad (from scratch)! He even drove the old fashioned cast iron waffle maker 5 hours in a van so my sister could have his homemade waffles on her wedding day. (Yes, they’re that good and famous in our family!)

Reply

Waffles! No, pancakes! No, waffles!

Eh you probably had lunch hours ago anyway, so it’s too late to help with the decision haha. But I’m almost 40 weeks pregnant, so pretty much everything sounds good right now! ;)

Reply

So happy for you!! I was originally going to do 5 tomorrow and a 15k on Sunday but was told to take it easy – also recovering from ITBS – so 2-3 tomorrow and the 15k.

I have never worn running clothes to bed but I do put my clothes out the night before if it’s a morning run. I don’t like to wake up earlier than I have to so I time things out pretty well. And as for chocolate – love it and thanks for reminding me to get dark chocolate chips!!

Reply

Have fun on your run! (RHYME) Haha, I’m about to go make my legs push me through a 5k as well! Maybe not exactly running the whole thing, but I’m working on it.

Reply

Pancakes! For sure.
Also I’m obsessed with those chevron Lulu speed shorts. So cute!

Reply

13 miler is on the schedule for tomorrow morning. I love those shorts, too!! I sleep in my sports bra and running shorts during the warm season but since tights are soooo expensive I try to wear them the minimal amount of time in order to make them last longer!! Everything else I need is set out the night before, including my gels, watch, headphones, ect otherwise I will leave without something, guaranteed! At least in my mind that makes them last longer!
Waffles. With whipped cream and strawberries. MMmmmmmm

Reply

I try to get my running clothes ready the night before if I’m going in the morning. Sleeping in them kind of grosses me out!

Choosing between pancakes and waffles is pretty tough- but I think pancakes barely wins for me.

Have a great run!

Reply

I think chocolate chips are a good idea everyday :) also sleeping in running clothes is genius and I should def start doing that.

Reply

Yay for running!!!!

I always choose waffles…they hold the syrup better!

Today was 8 miles and Sunday is 5 happy running!! I hope it goes great tomorrow

Reply

Pancakes AND waffles with tons of whipped cream!! I wanted to do a 5 miler today, but woke up with a fever… blah! Doing better though, maybe I’ll fit a 5 in by the end of the weekend! :D

Reply

This is the first time I’ve commented on your blog, but I’ve been reading for a while…
I bet you are so excited to finally run this weekend! Good luck!! I am not running until Monday, but this morning I ran 3.1 miles for the first time ever (in the rain.) I am excited about this as I haven’t ever run further than my mailbox prior to 7 weeks ago!

I always lay my running clothes and shoes out.

Pancakes!

Reply

first… Pancakes for sure.
I lay my clothes out the night before my run along with everything else I need. Garmin, ipod, ect.
This weekend is my first real half marathon! I’m so excited! It’s how my soul mate and I got together last year so it’s really special to me! Our first year we get to experience it together :)

Reply

I’m running 7 1/2 on Saturday. Taper week is starting since I have a half marathon next Saturday. I lay out everything except clothes – I like to wait and see what I feel like wearing that day. Oh, and pancakes. Always and forever. Unless you’re making bacon waffles.

Reply

Good luck on your run tomorrow! I am coming back from 7 weeks off due to post tib tendonitis so my “long” run this weekend is limited to 40 minutes. I am excited though!

Reply

I would love a peek at the stretching video too! :-)

Reply

I’m gonna be somehow training for the track meet and 10k I have coming up next week! I’m just got cleared this past week to run after a looong ankle injury

Reply

I have an 11 mile run this weekend. One of the last long runs I have in my half-marathon training.

LOVE those shorts, super cute.

Reply

-I have a 9-miler to do tomorrow morning! (I’m nervous and excited all at the same time…as usual : )
-waffles are definitely my favorite!

Reply

Pancakes! I try to make chocolate chip pancakes for Saturday and/or Sunday morning. My kids love them.

I’ve never worn my clothes to bed, but I have set them out for the morning, especially if I’m going out before sun up.

Reply

I lay my clothes out for the next morning. That’s what I’m doing tonight, before I go out.

Reply

I have so few workout clothes, work out often, wash often, that I do not have to lay them out! I am hoping to do 10 miles tomorrow. Longest training in quite some time, a little nervous about my knee. It survived 9 miles last week though!

Pancakes all the way.

Reply

I’m going into Vancouver tomorrow to do my 11 mile long run. My friend Melissa and I decided that we need to practice running the Seawall in Stanley Park since it is part of our BMO Half that is happening ONE MONTH FROM TODAY. Not that I’m thinking about how close it is at all…

Reply

I don’t necessarily lay my clothes out in advance but I know in my head what I’m planning to wear. I have had my half marathon outfit planned for a week already and the race isn’t even until April 28th!

This weekend I’ve got the Cherry Blossom Ten Miler- my first race over 10K and I am NERVOUS! But the weather is supposed to be perfect so I’m hoping for a nice jog around DC if nothing else :-)

GOOD LUCK on your first run back!!! So happy you’re able to get back to it!

Reply

SO excited about a ten mile run in this BEAUTIFUL 75 degree weather! I will be thinking of you and saying a little prayer for you on your run tomorrow!

Reply

I have to lay my running clothes out the night before. It means I’m actually more likely to go running.

Pancakes!

Hope your run is fab :)

Reply

Yay!! So exciting- 5 weeks must’ve felt like an eternity. Since 1 day feels like a lot to me :) I’m going to do 11 miles at marathon pace and then do some rigorous shopping at the mall. Pancakes. No question. Also, my little one was rocking that book ALL day today, too :)

Reply

I LOVE picking out my outfit for my runs! It makes me so happy. I love color coordinating ;) I ran 8 miles yesterday and 7 miles today. Not sure what I’ll end up doing this weekend!

Reply

Good luck tomorrow speedster! You’re going to do awesome. And, waffles of course! Love the nooks and crannies they have for syrup and butter.

Reply

San Lois Obispo half marathon on Sunday. We head down tomorrow. Even though my training went GREAT and this is my second half. I’m super nervous. My husband made it to wee 9 of training and then pinched a nerve in his back which means he can barely walk! I feel so bad for him-it will be 6 weeks before he’s back in shape to run.

I’m so nervous. Wish me luck and have fun tomorrow! You’ve been a really good patient.

Reply

Good luck running again tomorrow! It will feel amazing, I’m sure.

My run this weekend… 19 miles for marathon training (my first) – this is the longest I’ll have run! I’m a little nervous… so I figured I would try to make it more exciting by running part of it in a 10k race…then just continuing on. Gaaaaah.

Reply

I hope you have a great run tomorrow!

I lay out my clothes the night before. The less thinking I have to do before a morning run, the better. I like to get up, potty, brush my teeth, throw on my clothes/shoes and head out the door!

Waffles! They have built-in syrup receptacles!

Reply

I haven’t been able to run for three weeks now. We’re forecasted for beautiful weather this weekend – finally, and I’ve become teary several times today knowing I won’t be lacing up. Knowing it took you five weeks to heal gives me hope. Have a great run!

Reply

My long run is just 10 this weekend. I have a half next weekend so time to dial back a bit. I’m not really racing the half next weekend but I do want to do well so taking it easy tomorrow.
I decide what I’m wearing about :30 seconds before meeting my 4:30 am running buddies. Temp and wind play a HUGE factor and it might vary 30 degrees from when I go to bed and when I wake up about five hours later.
Guess I would have to say waffles. But if someone else is making them I would definitely go for the pancakes!!!

Reply

I’m hoping to get around 19-20 miles on trails tomorrow and then Sunday is the Cherry Blossom 10 miler in DC!!

I set my clothes out the night before I run always.

My Dad’s pancakes – they are crispy around the edges and deliciously fluffy in the middle. My brother-in-law’s family lives on a maple syrup farm, so we have gallons of the stuff. It’s soooo good.

Reply

Your capris.. so cute!! I’m doing 9 miles tomorrow morning- the most I’ve ever done! Wish me luck! I normally lay in bed thinking about what I’ll wear. I’m not sure how the weather will be- it’s supposed to snow tomorrow! :( I think I’m a pancake girl. Sooo good.

Reply

Ugh, no running for me this weekend – stress fracture! I’m off the roads for awhile!

Reply

I have a long run scheduled this weekend, 10 miles! And I do hot yoga on Sunday mornings. :)

I lay my clothes out every night before I go to bed. I wake up somewhere between 3:45-5 every morning to run (depending on mileage and if I’m planning a brick or not) so I find it’s better to be ready for the day before going to bed!

And WAFFLES! I like to have the little squares to hold onto all the peanut butter I smother them with! YUM!!!

Reply

Those bits about the injuries are so true. Unless you just run a few easy miles every week, you’re likely to get injured which is a huge bummer. I’ve been having some major struggles with injuries over the past six months or so and have been thinking about getting injured and injury prevention. I think taking things easy and being cautious is key, like following the 10% rule, etc. If I have to get up really early, I definitely lay out all of my running gear the night before so all I have to do is throw it on. I don’t think I could ever choose between pancakes and waffles…I love each of them equally! Have a great weekend!

Reply

I’m hoping to do 5-7 miles tomorrow…I’m about a week/week and a half off of an injury, so it’s been almost a month since I’ve run longer than six miles! I usually just pick my clothes out in the morning..but I have an idea of what I want to wear in my head before I pick them out. I would choose waffles over pancakes all day… I don’t like pancakes because of their texture!

Reply

I meeting some friends who have to get their run in early at 5AM to help pace them! Holy moly – I totally set out my clothes early and usually sleep in my sports bra and underwear or shorts I am planning to wear. I think I’ll even pre make my oatmeal so I can just microwave it in the am and not have to think… its going to be a doozy of a wake up call!

Reply

Love your brooks shoes. I tried them on the other day (haha not yours) and the support felt weird on my inner arch so I passed on purchasing them. They are so cool looking :)
I am running 16k tomorrow morning and cannot wait!!!!! I only lay out my running clothes the night before if I’m racing otherwise I grab what I want right before I head out.
Enjoy your run tomorrow!

Reply

Running my 4th Shamrock Shuffle 8K on Sunday. Yay for running season in Chicago!

I always lay my running clothes out the night before. Makes it easier to get going before I actually wake up. ;)

I’m going with waffles. OR stuffed french toast.

Reply

No run since 3/21. Foot surgery, injury…it’s so real! My injury has given me a chance to read lots of good books like Chi Running.
I also just met Scott Jurek here in SLC and he and his book (Eat & Run) is amazing! He looks almost glowing with health and his running style is so holistic! He’s all about individuality too. Makes me happy! Now I can announce that I can NEVER wear a minimalist shoe. It’s not gonna happen!

Reply

LOL… my kids had chocolate chip pancakes for dinner!!!

Hi!! I clicked on your name from another blog and happy I did :)
I just might add you to my stalking list!
….

Great articles!
I am currently “benched” from running
Awaiting xrays to see what is wrong
haven’t run for over a week and I am dying of boredom!
I hope your run tomorrow goes successful!!!

PANCAKES! Hands down. No competition. I don’t like waffles.
Same batter blah blah I know
but I don’t like the crunchyness
I love my fluffy pancakes!
I have a pancake obsession.

6×800 speed training tomorrow! Enjoy your run tomorrow, can’t wait to hear how it goes!!

Reply

I hope your run goes amazing tomorrow! I have a long run planned after I teach my group-ex classes tomorrow. I actually spend Sunday pm laying out all my workout clothes for the week. It saves me time in the mornings and at night! Waffles!!

Reply

Pancakes. Almost every time.

Nowadays, I just change when I get up. But when I lived in a cold climate, I *would* sometimes sleep in some of my running gear, or at least bring it to bed with me, so it would be warm in the morning. Somehow, warm clothes lowered the barrier to entry on a really cold morning.

Reply

Enjoy your run!!!!!!! I plan to run four miles tomorrow and hope it goes well after having to take the week with a little injury.

Chocolate chip pancakes, of course!

Reply

10K tomorrow morning and a short run Sunday!
Usually I just grab things out of the drawer unless it’s a race.
I’m so happy for you that you get to go run!!

Reply

I am running a 5k tomorrow hoping to get below that darn 30 min mark. Congrats on getting to run tomorrow!

Chocolate chip waffles! My daughter has already asked for them this morning and it isn’t even 6:15 yet. Have fun on your run today. I will be taking it easy today and doing my long run for the week tomorrow.

Reply

I set my clothes out every day the night before… I run when I get up so preparing in advance means I don’t have to think as much so early in the morning. :)

Reply

My run this weekend was last night, my first 5 k since being pregnant. Had a blast!!!

Reply

I hope your run goes great, just listen to your body.

I am making homemade crepes this morning, with fresh strawberries, raspberries, whipped cream and chocolate chips! Come on over, there will be plenty! :)

That sounds awesome!

I loved that article in Running Times or wherever it was I read it last month. It was so good. I love the part that talks about that we aren’t injured more than other sports, but more injuries sideline us than other sports.

I lay my running clothes out if I have an early morning run. Then I don’t have to wake up to go running. I just roll out of bed, eat a banana, go to the bathroom, and slip my clothes on and I’m out the door before my brain realizes what I’m doing. This works especially well when it’s a 17 or longer run. The longer I can go without realizing what I’m doing the better.

Reply

I am also dealing with an injury, a freakin concussion! I’m testing tonight and hopefully can run my 11 mi training run with my training partner tomorrow :-S

As for clothes, it depends on the run and if I teach a (fitness) class that day. If I teach then I’ll just wear whatever I taught in. If I don’t teach and it is a long run I’ll either pick it out earlier that day or a few days ahead of time so that I don’t wear what would be best for my long run BEFORE my long run!

Oh and I’m definitely a pancake or french toast kinda gal!

Reply

I ran seven yesterday, and will probably run 10-12 later today. Spring is officially here. It’s supposed to get up into the 60s today.

I don’t sleep in my running gear, but I do have it ready on a separate hanger if I go first thing in the a.m., or if I’m hitting the trail after work, my bag is packed.

I love both, but french toast is my choice.

Reply

yay!!! finally a run! I finally got my shins better went out for a 10 miler, my right hip started hurting and just found out I have trochanteric bursitis.. whatever, I’m so over injuries… wah!!! I’m taking the next four weeks off of everything and let my body/injuries heal and get ready to rock!!

I wish I could sleep in my spandex. lol

Reply

I love your running outfits, you always wear so many fun colors!
