Today’s run was hard, well the first half sure was.  I set out at about 7 this morning and went to my favorite running trail.  Please note:  I somehow managed to get my finger in the bottom of each of the pictures I took while running.

I think I was just tired and as weird as it was I was having a little bit of separation anxiety when I left Brooke at home with Billy.  I used to hear other moms talk about this and I thought they must surely be crazy but it was weird/hard to leave Brooke for a few hours to go out on my run… I have issues.  Luckily at about halfway through the run I started feeling much better and my body finally felt warmed up.  I think I averaged around an 8:20 for the first 8 miles and a 7:40 for the last 8 miles.  Why does it take me so long to get into my running groove sometimes?

The best part about this trail is that you NEVER have to stop and you get to run by water for a majority of the trail.  Running by water is the best.  The trail keeps going forever and I probably saw at least 800 other runners out on the trail this morning.

Blurry fuel of choice for this morning was Cran-Razz shot bloks.

This is really random but before this blog I had another blog a long time ago in which I wrote a total of 5 posts and each post had about 8 words in it, I was really into it:)  I trained for my first marathon entirely on the treadmill and here is the entry from the first time I ever ran 16 miles.  Dang it… today’s run took me 2 hours and 7 minutes:)

I went through a phase of only calling Billy Bil Bil.

I came home to Brooke lifting her head a foot off of the ground?!?!  SHE IS GROWING UP TOOOOOOO FAST!!!

PS California, I love you and now my entire produce drawer in my fridge is full of beautiful avocados.

Tonight is going to be a good night.

I didn’t run this morning, although the weather is finally making running more enjoyable. #GetAfterIt!

Chocolate and caramel, combined! ;)

OMG 39 cent avocados?! I always have a million avo’s in my fridge (yay for cali!) but um, that’s an AMAZING deal!!! Where is this? I must know!! I literally put avocados on everything: sliced thin on a sandwich, mushed up with a little salt and squeeze of lime or lemon for guac, cubed in a salad, in a quesadilla, burrito, all Mexican food. Yummm.
And yay for your long run! I can’t even imagine running 16 miles right now.. That’s incredible! But.. I’m a beginner ;) I’ll get there!!

Reply

I think if I could get avocados for that price I’d subsist entirely on them for life. Brooke is looking adorable and strong!

Reply

Avocados…sprinkle a little salt on and eat out of the skin with a spoon :)

As I’ve gotten older it takes me a whole lot longer to warm up. But I run slowly anyway so it never really matters if I’m extremely warmed up :P

I LOVE Kraft caramels!

And you know that Billy and Brooke were doing the Headlift Workout while you were out running ;-) It always works out that way. LOL

My run today was great. I love fall weather, especially to run in. It takes me 2-3 miles to feel warmed up.

Mmm, Avacados. Love them any way, especially plain. I cannot even imagine 39c avacados! I would totally be stocking up on them (can you freeze them…?)

Caramel. In fact I am making homemade caramel and making caramel apples today with my family (we do this every October). I really love everything about fall, the food is the best!

Reply

I went for my run after my exam today and it really helped to blow off steam!

I like my avocados mashed in some tuna with olive oil and salt. Or cut in half, drizzled with a bit of honey and a sprinkle of sea salt. But as long as an avocado is in my mouth, I ain’t picky.

Chocolate!!!!!!!!!!

Reply

YUM, what are you baking with those caramels and apples?!!

Also, rock on for running 16 miles today!

Reply

You’re amazing! Great run. I can’t believe you’re running at that speed only a short time after having a baby. I’m still not allowed to exercise after my c section. It’s REALLY tough!

Reply

I often just slice avocados in half, take out the stone and scoop it out with a spoon! soooo yummy. I can’t believe you can buy em for 39 cents, that is crazy! I pay about £1.30 for them in the UK! You can get them cheaper but they are really small and not so good.

It takes me FOREVER to get my running groove on — not quite 7 miles, but usually 3-4ish. Unless I’m racing — total jack rabbit from the get go!! :)
Doing an evening run today. Looking forward to getting out there, but will probably do a shorter run than plaanned. And I’m totally okay with that!
Allll about the chocolate — not a fan of the caramel’s stickiness.
Brooke is adorable and will be a total charmer (she already is)!!
Jealous of the 39 cent avocados!! Ours are 3x as much and probably only taste 1/3 as good!!

Reply

Wow awesome avacado sale!!! I like mine any kind of style – sliced, mashed, on a sandwich, in a salad, smeared on chips… Lol.

I don’t run nearly as far or as fast as you, so I’m not sure I ever feel warmed up. I ran 5 miles this morning!

Chocolate and caramel are delicious together! :)

I always hate leaving my kids to run. I also worry about getting hit by a car or abducted and leaving them childless. I clearly am an optimist. Glad you got a nice long run in!

Reply

Normally takes about 3 miles to feel warmed up and find my groove!

I am 100% jealous of your cheap avocados. They are $1.50ish depending where you get them (farmers market vs store) in FL. Pretty sure I would be eating avoacado on EVERYTHING if they are ever that cheap here.

Chocolate + Caramel, duh. Win-Win right there. :)

I had THE BEST run today!!! We ran down a small canyon for a couple miles, and then did 6 more in the valley, surrounded by gorgeous fall colors. We saw the sunrise, and the sky was pink… go amazing! Then at mile 7 we stopped to watch 50 ELK cross the road! (There were some babies & one bull elk with huge horns.) To top it off on the last mile we watched 5 hot air balloons launch. It made it picture perfect! We did 8 miles, which is the farthest I’ve gone since a serious illness in June. Runner’s high, baby! :)

Oh my gosh, Jan J, where do you live? It sounds like paradise! I’m an East Coast-er, and I love this part of the country, but it’s nothing like that! It sounds like an awesome run! Congrats! :)

And Janae, thank you so much for all of your great posts! You’re always so inspiring! Okay guys, I’m going to get my run on NOW! Have a great day!

Reply

39 cents!! Holy cow.. I would definitely stock up!

Sometimes I take a long time to warm up too.. I’m sure it’s hard being away from darling Brooke. I get separation anxiety being away from my puppy.. just imagine me with a baby.

Fave ways to eat avocado: guacomole, on sandwiches.salads, or just with a spoon in my mouth.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend Janae!

Reply

Holy 39 cents! It’s almost worth flying to CA and buying 100 avocados. My sister who lives in LA would agree that I should implement this plan.

Reply

Ack warming up is the absolute worst, especially now that it’s freezing cold outside… I swear that I can feel all my joints and muscles creaking and cracking. That’s hilarious about your old blog though. Short and to the point, very nice ;)

That’s crazy about the avo’s! I wish I could find them here at that price, but they kind of cost an arm and a leg. I love avo in pretty much any form, but I think my favorite might be to just mash it up and spread it over toast with some salt. So simple. So good.

Reply

$0.39?!?! Thats amazing. In Florida we pay $1! I loveee avocados on sandwiches. And with eggs. and on salad. and with chips. Basically with everything. I choose chocolate over caramel any day. I usually start to feel good after the first two miles. Today is an off day so I’ll pay extra attention to when I’m warmed up tomorrow :)

Reply

Great job on your run!!

Mmmm I LOVE avocados pretty much any and every way. My favorite ways to eat them would probably have to be in the form of guac, on a sandwich, or mashed up with garlic salt and pepper on wheat toast.

Aaaaand most definitely chocolate over caramel any day!

Reply

I pr-ed in a half and ran 20:26 this am! Super jealous of your run though! I can’t believe avocados are only 39 cents in california I think I would eat them for breakfast lunch and diner :) They were 2.50 each today at Whole Foods in MA! I love avocados smashed on toast, with eggs, in smoothies, pretty much any way!

Reply

It usually takes me 3 or 4 miles to get in the groove, and the second half of my run is always faster than the first.

Love avocados any way, but guac is my fave!! I like chocolate, but love caramel!!

Reply

I had an awesome run this morning (although not nearly as long or as fast)! I can’t believe your avocados are only 39 cents. Stock up girl! Let’s see some guac on this page : )

Reply

I’d say it takes me at least 4 miles to really get in my groove. My run this morning was great–a my second 2-hour half-marathon :-)

Reply

Usually by mile 5 I feel warmed up. For some reason miles 3 and 4 always suck. Not quite sure why.

I’m so obsessed with avocados. My favorite way to eat them is smashed onto a wrap and then I load all the other veggies and goodness. It’s like a condiment but way better.

Reply

I spy ingredients to make crazy caramel dipped apples with all the best toppings!! That makes 16 miles totally completely worth it!

Reply

My goodness, you are faaaaast!

Absolute random question! Have you ever thought of doing a vlog entry? (maybe you have in the past and I missed it though!)

Reply

caramel and chocolate!

I am not a fan of avocados, but V is. It was one of his first foods. I chunk them up and he will eat a whole one.

Reply

I always feel completely miserable and want to quit the entire first mile of my run…it gets better after that, but usually not until mile 3 or after that I’m really into it. Weird but…I’ve never actually had an avocado. I don’t care for guacamole so I’ve always thought I probably just don’t like them.

Reply

If avocados were thy price here, I would be eating guacamole for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I love eggs with homemade salsa, avocados in a corn tortilla. Mmmm. That was my lunch yesterday :)

Way to go on the run today. That trail looks.beautimous. I ran 9.5 today and had head wind the whole first half. Needless to say my second half was much faster. Are you training for something bigger than a half now? Are you keeping something from us? ;)

Simple. Chocolate WITH caramel.

Off for a date night with the hubby..only we couldn’t find a babysitter so the kids will be coming too. Can it still.count as a date? Have a great weekend!

Reply

It usually takes about 30 minutes for me to fully warm up before a race. But wow, you were MOVING for those 16 miles! That’s a good pace!

Reply

This morning I ran a trail half-marathon!! It was in the forest around a huge lake and I’m 100% positive the ENTIRE race was straight uphill running switchbacks! Even though during it I was sure I was going to die I still have the best time!! Love fall running :)

Reply

Nice long run! My second halves seem to be much faster than my first halves lately, but I am now OK with that. Sometimes it’s good to do a nice warmup in the beginning, even if it is an 8 mile warmup. I keep telling myself that it is practice for my upcoming marathon – this way I won’t go out too fast!

I’m definitely a chocolate woman (I’m eating some as I type!). Although, it certainly doesn’t hurt to have both chocolate and caramel at the same time.

Reply

Great run today! I ran with two amazing ladies. They are so much faster than I am but still run with me on Saturday mornings. It helps get my ace and distance up as I prep for my first 15k ever! I have only been running since February and have visions of a half marathon by next spring :)

I didn’t go out this morning after a bad nights sleep and some pain in the arch of my foot.
Takes about 2 miles. Sometimes more.
Guacamole!!!
Chocolate.

I’m extremely envious of your 0.39 avacados. I currently live in Maine(from Colorado) and right now the best fruit ever is priced at 1.39 a piece. I’m happy to buy them at 0.99 and when I saw them for 0.49(one day only) I bought 8 for the week!!

Reply

I love that you can find a trail to be able to run 16 miles on. If I ran 16 mile (I never have before), I’d probably cover my whole town and then some. I would LOVE a good running trail =)

Reply

My run was zero miles… :( My legs have been perpetually sore so I decided to take 2 days of complete rest before I start Tina’s bootcamp on monday. I actually got dressed for a run this morning and then had to talk myself out of it.

Reply

what the heck, 39 cents??!! brb moving to california immediately

i like avo in guacamole, grilled cheese, sushi… every way!!

Reply

I LOVE LOVE LOVE that trail! I miss it so much. I felt safe enough to run on that trail in a downpour of rain. And I wasn’t the only crazy runner doing that too!

Being raised in Cali, I’ve only had avocados from here . At a local produce stand, I can buy 20 small avocados for $5. No lie. And despite the avocados being small, the pit inside is even smaller…the size of a 1-inch pebble! They are even better than store-bought. I love them with fish tacos!

I also did 16 miles this morning alongside the water. Rio del Mar to Santa Cruz. Felt good after the first couple of miles too.

Chocolate allll thheee waaaayyy!

Reply

My 4th mile is usually when I start warming up. First mile is always slowest, no matter how hard I try to go faster at the beginning. Maybe I should listen to my body and just let it warm up though??

Reply

Glad I’m not the only one who gets separation anxiety from their little ones. My girls are almost two and I always miss them!!! Takes me awhile to warm into a run too.

Reply

I still get separation anxiety when I leave my kids to do my long runs and they are 2 years old! It gets easier but I remember it being really hard when they were newborns. You don’t want to miss anything!

My first 3 miles are usually my warm up time on good days.

Reply

16 miles–wow!

No run today–3 miler tomorrow.

I do run/walk intervals so I stay pretty much the same

I don’t like avacados (gasp!)

And chocolate!

Reply

Am I the only one who looked up Janae and Bil Bil? FYI it is SUCH a cute blog and I hope you always keep that one too :)

You’re the best, keep smiling!

Great job on your run!

Thirty-nine cents?????? Lucky!!!

Reply

It takes me until about mile 5 to get in my groove these days! Then I go as far as I can until I hear my daughter start to wake! I know you can relate. :-) She’s almost 2 and I still have guilt when I leave her to do my outside runs. I think it’s totally normal!! The jogging stroller is great but sometimes you just gotta hit that open pavement on your own!

Reply

My run was great this morning- first half marathon!

And 39 cents?! I would be happy if I could find avocadoes at 3-4x that price here.

Reply

My favorite way to use/eat avocado is all by itself! Second would be in guacamole. We are having it tomorrow! Mexican food for our family dinner.

Caramel or chocolate? Not even close! Chocolate!

Reply

How bout choc & caramel together?!? :)

She is adorable! And yay for doing 16! Way to to go!

Reply

You gotta try the Lindt flavour Dark with Caramel & a Dash of Sea Salt…too die for!

Reply

That’s so funny that you posted a picture with your finger in it, I went for an amazing hike today and used my new phone’s camera only to realize later that my finger is in half of them! Lame.

You trained for a marathon entirely on a treadmill? I was training for one and did ONE fifteen mile run on the treadmill just to see if I could, and it almost killed me. Wow!

Reply

My running group met this morning at 7:00am in Mountain View (where Google is) and ran from Shoreline. That trail is pretty awesome because it also goes for a LOOOOONG time (with “rolling hills” in some places because of the highway overpass. Otherwise, super flat.

Oh I miss California avocados! In China & HK… avocados are $2 USD… each. Oh well. China makes up for it with $12 USD mani/pedis :)

Reply

$0.39 avocados! Dang, they’re at least $1 each where I am. I guess that’s what I get for living on the east coast.
Brooke is too adorable!

That view looks awesome!
No run this morning, had a 10K yesterday so I am giving my body a rest day today! Have another race next week so I don’t want to overdo it.

It usually only takes me about two miles, but those first two miles are the worst!

So jealous of your cheap avocados. I am obsessed with them and eat about one a day. I usually just eat it out of the skin plain, but i also love adding it to my salads and sandwiches.

Probably chocolate, actually, can i pick both? Both. Haha!

Where is this trail? It looks gorgeous!

It is the Los gatos trail! It is incredible!

You dominated that run!! Awesome job!!

My run today was 9 miles and it felt great. The best part is that Bungee came for the whole thing and she was a champ and got a PDR!

39cents for an avocado?? Buy them all and send them this way so i can sell them on the black market! They’re 2/$5 around here!

WHAT if I ever find avocados that cheap I am eating them for breakfast lunch and dinner. And dessert. And snack.

Reply

$0.39 for avocados??!! OMG! I get excited when I see them for $1.

LG Creek Trail, nice!

Nice avacados! Jealous of that and that sweet running path we dont have things like that here! I would love if we did though!

Reply

I agree with you, it takes me about 3 miles to warm up and then it get’s easier.
Where did you find .39 avocados? I’m going on a hunting trip.

Reply

Holy guacamole! I pay over a $1 per avacado! I’m going to send you my mailing address. Please ship a case per week. Thank you ;-)

I take about 2-3 good miles to get warmed up for a long run. Then you get to that lovely point where you don’t want to quit and it’s great :)

Saturday was my first long run since my half marathon – 5.2 miles kicked my butt after 3 lazy weeks. I ran 4 on Monday and 3 today – trying to build my weekly mileage back up so I can hit those long runs harder on Saturdays.

That is AWESOME that you conquered your long run – do you have a marathon you are traing for or just felt like going long?

I had a question for you about shoes – tried to email but it failed, weird :-/

You feature so many shoes on your blog – I am assuming lots of them are sponsors which is awesome that you get to try out so many styles. I was wondering, do you wear thicker cushioned shoes for training and then racing flats for your races? I love my Mizunos and I need the stability help, but they are starting to feel a bit bulky and during my half marathon I def. could feel the weight of them by the last few miles of the race. Just wondering what strategy you use for choosing which type of shoes when (did that make any sense? lol). Any advice is appreciated! Just wondering if I should try some lighter weight performance stability shoes – or save those only for speedwork/races and stick to my stability ones for logging miles and play it safe. Thanks for your thoughts!!
