Cravings and a lobster baby.

Next time you are sitting at work/school/home/the store/wherever you are and you see that it is 3 o’clock pacific standard time you can just know for a surety that Janae is eating her TJFMW (Trader Joe’s Frosted Mini Wheats) with cut up peaches.  You can know that I am in pure heaven with each and every bite.

Billy texted me yesterday and said, “I just thought of a delicious dinner idea! Homemade mac and cheese with different types of cheeses and bread crumbs on top.”  The thing about BIlly is that he never craves something and so the second I got that text I drove straight to the store to get the ingredients.  I crave different foods at least 4 times a day and Billy always gets me (except I still haven’t talked him into leaving class to go get me what I am craving) my cravings so finally it was my turn to get him something.

Weird:  Birds in the grocery store.  Weirder: The fact that I took a picture of it to show you.

Photo 2

Don’t mind the sweaty face but it was actually HOT today.  Sorry to people living somewhere that it is already cold… it still kind of feels like summer here.

DSC 4369

I have never made homemade mac and cheese but I found THIS recipe (beware…it is incredibly healthy and full of cauliflower and fat-free water… jk).  Remember in junior high when you would write notes to your friends and use words like ‘JK’ (just kidding)?  I haven’t gotten over that stage and still write and say ‘jk’ all of the time.

DSC 4374

It was really good and the best part had to be the buttery ritz cracker crumbles on the top!  We also had caesar salad and I realized I need to have more of that in my life.

Billy was pretty excited because he got some new trail shoes in the mail yesterday. He is going on his first trail run with a friend of his on Saturday!  I can’t decide if I want to get into trail running or not but I guess I should just try it out first and then decide but I have a feeling I would probably trip on ever rock and root on the trail.

DSC 4376

I have to show you Brooke’s killer mohawk from yesterday. She can pull off any hairstyle that she wants.

After I told Billy that I REALLY want Brooke to be a lobster for Halloween he sent me this awesome picture:

Lobsterbaby

Biggest lobster EVER!

You go girl! Homemade mac and cheese sounds awesome!! It is cold already here… I’m a little jealous.

Haha that pic of Billy is adorable- he looks so happy with his new shoes…like a kid on Christmas morning :)! I love your afternoon snack! Lately mine has been almonds & raisins- no where near as exciting but convenient nonetheless!

Reply

Oh, I’ve been craving mac n cheese for ages now but my oven’s broken :( Proper autumnal comfort food! Yummy.

Reply

That mac & cheese looks delicious! I just had lunch – spinach, tomato, and a chicken breast with pesto on a ciabatta bun, so nope not craving anything right now!

My afternoon snack recently has been greek yogurt of some kind. In fact, there is one staring at me right now as I respond to your post instead of finishing my readings for school haha.

I love trail running, but I don’t have trail running shoes. I was using the same pair of shoes for over 5 years (!!!) because I swear I couldn’t find anything comfier – I have really flat arches and my old ones molded to my feet (aka flattened) so nicely. I realize this is terrible though and I may have found a replacement, finally, in my relatively new Nike+ Livestrong shoes that I love so far!

Have a great day!

Reply

Now you’ve got me craving those trader joes fmw but I can’t fulfill my craving because the closest store is 7 hours away! Sad panda! I guess I’ll just have to settle for the original for bfast this morning. Have a wonderful Wednesday! =)

Reply

Ok I lied. Looks like there’s one only 2 and a half hours away. Still a little far but sounds like it might be worth a trip…

Reply

OMG! I’m pering my pants over the baby and lobster!!!

Reply

Recently, my afternoon snack has been either blended frozen banana and spinach with a scoop of chocolate protein powder (if I’m feeling healthy) or piece of toast with PB and maple syrup (if I’m feeling like being awesome).
I can’t believe that you felt the need to tell us what JK was short for!! haha. Love it!
I’m totally craving a cupcake. I went on a (fabulous!!!) first date last night and we were supposed to go for cupcakes at my favourite bakery. Plans changed, but the craving is TOTALLY still there. I’ll forgive him though, he’s awesome. :)

Reply

:O I’m just shocked at how huge that lobster is. In other news, I need to search for a Trader Joe’s nearby after reading you talk about it so much… It’s absolutely necessary, I’d say.

My last pair of running shoes were Asics Gels but they lasted all of three runs and I had to go back to my old, un-fancy, un-flashy, not blood-racing-fun Sauconys. I even bought a new, souped up pair of that brand, knowing it’s “my” brand but they all failed me. I went to the icky mall by my house and bought the old-style, not fun Sauconys that WORK FOR ME.
WHY would I go and try to change and give myself cruddy runs and achey feet? If i want souped up, thrill-inducing shoes I’d better stick to that in regular shoes! UGH
No afternoon snacks for me. I’m a three meals girl even though I’d tried for ages not to be.
And craving, craving craving cheesecake this week (???) random cuz cream cheese no my fave. Now i’m craving ceasar salad, too :)

Reply

I love Brooke’s new ‘do!
I also love trail running but don’t do it nearly enough. I bet you guys have some amazing trails where you are!

Reply

What a wonderful wife you are to make billy what he is craving! Lately I have been craving homemade white bread and jelly (I haven’t had white bread since 8th grade). You can bet I have been chowing down on fresh homemade bread!

Reply

Although it’s summer time in Florida still, we made Cheese soup the other day! DELICIOUS!

BTW — I have the same shirt from Target. ;) Twins!

Reply

omg that lobster baby! I’d be terrified! Haha. Brooke being a lobster would be super cute. I say go for it!

Reply

How is that baby not totally freaked out by the lobster!?!? Hahaha and my friend used to make us homemade mac n cheese in high school but whenever I tried it went horribly wrong… And I still use “brb”

Reply

I added that recipe to my pinterest board :)

Reply

Afternoon snack is pretty much always the same… Apple slices with almond butter. I always crave breakfast foods like Pancakes and waffles. I think trail running would be really fun, but I never tried it.

Reply

So ironic that you just posted this because I’m making homemade mac and cheese as we speak. My hubby is having a big bball game tonight and his friends are all coming over before to carbo-load with mac and cheese. :)

Reply

That is a huge lobster!

I made puppy chow over the weekend, so I have been eating the leftover rice Chex as an afternoon snack. Or a Honeycrisp apple with peanut butter. So good!

Great job on the mac and cheese! Looks delicious!

Reply

A bowl of cereal makes -the best- afternoon snack. Mine is usually a Starbucks cappuccino and a bar/cookie/muffin because I’m out of the house, but I make up for it by having a bowl of cereal for dinner or before bed. And I’ve kind of been craving apples like crazy lately, whether they’re baked, as applesauce, in pies, or just straight up raw and crispy. You’ve really got me craving Mac&Cheese, though, and it’s only 6:30 in the morning…

Reply

I recently started trail running about once a week and really like it. It’s a nice change of pace. I always buy Newton running shoes and have the all terrain ones for trails.

Brooke will be the cutest lobster!

Reply

For the past few days the craving has been Panda Express Chinese. So I went and got some last night. Ate half for dinner and saved half for lunch.
Afternoon snack has been the BEST peaches I got at Costco.
I did trail run back in NC. I am still getting used to the very different trails here in AZ. But I will get there!

The Kidless Kronicles

Reply

I love Mac & Cheese! It’s seriously a problem and have it at least once a week! I have seen Lobster costumes at Target or Costco! Check Em Out!

Reply

I have recently gotten into trail running… it is so much harder than road running but so beautiful and peaceful (until you fall…). I don’t even listen to music on the trails.

Reply

I love trail running with Bungee because she can be off leash and it really tires her out. Unfortunately, I am pretty horrible and get lost in the woods all of the time, so I tend to limit my trail running to when someone else will go with me.

I haven’t had any real cravings lately. Though, after the marathon on Saturday, I really wanted Thai, so I made everyone get takeout Thai with me.

Reply

Pretty sure I am always craving mac n cheese. Or actually, I’m just always craving cheese!

Omg, Brooke as a lobster for Halloween would be so adorable! Then you and Billy could be Chefs and carry her in a bit pot :)

My afternoon snack has been an apple and a string cheese. Still need to try the string cheese and pretzel combo!

Reply

Janae I was at the grocery store over the weekend and walked down the cereal aisle and immediately went towards the FMW because you have made me crave them everyday you speak of them. I grabbed them up quickly and went on my way. When I got home to “test” them out there was a huge disappointment. I grabbed them so quickly at the store that I ended up with Shredded Wheat with NO frosting!! UGH so sad! They taste like crap but I continue to eat them since I bought them! Total failure! haha waaaah

Reply

I think my latest craving was hummus! I kept forgetting it at the store. Now I am enjoying it on my eggs again and all is right in the world:-)

I don’t usually get an afternoon snack. I eat dinner so early (5:30ish) that I try to hold off. Making it 4 hours without food is tough!

I love trail running. I don’t do it nearly as much as I’d like because I have to drive to any trail, but it is just amazing. I was scared I’d break my head open too. I’ve definitely taken my share of spills, but haven’t broke anything but a little skin.

That mac and cheese looks delicious! My afternoon snack is always a yogurt bowl. I don’t see me getting tired of it anytime soon!

I still use jk and idk and fml (when I’m being dramatic haha). And for when I get super lazy, I even write tomorrow as tmo!!

Reply

I’m a huge trail runner. I always feel like trail running is to road running what mountain biking is to road biking. Slower, more intense, more technical, more challenging and simply gorgeous. I hope Billy likes it. What kind of trail shoes did he get?

Reply

I got the Saucony Peregrine 2. I’m a big Saucony fan and these shoes get great reviews!

Reply

Good job on the mac and cheese! I have always wanted to make it from scratch but am too intimidated for some reason.

YES!!! You must try trail running Janae, you would love it. With your talent at running I am sure you would be great at it and the new challenge will be exciting to you. The scenery, vibe, community, everything about it is just so amazing. One good way to check it out is to find some good local races and go volunteer, they always need help at aid stations for the ultras. My husband and I are working a 30 hour shift for the Chimera 100 next month and I can’t wait. Warning though – it’s about as addictive as TJFMW and FNL put together.

Reply

That. looks. SO. GOOD. Homemade mac and cheese is my FAVORITE food in the entire world. Literally. If we go to a restaurant that has it, I always order it. I’m pretty much an expert when it comes to the different tastes. That’s what I’m telling my mom to make me this weekend when I go home :)

I still say jk all the time. Even when I’m talking. I get some weird looks occasionally but that’s just cause people miss being able to act like they’re still in junior high ;)

Reply

Love Billy’s shoes. I feel like I want to get them for Chris for his b-day.

I have 4 different cravings each day too, and the trick is satisfying them before they go away…….hence my impulse trips to the grocery store or my need to get up from our dinner table just to have a random potato chip.

Reply

i was craving caramel candy corn ever since you posted it so i picked it up yesterday and now my life is complete again!

ive been having a small handful of nuts as my afternoon snack :)

i’ve always wanted to get into trail running but still have yet to! I need to find a buddy to join me. my last pair of shoes were my glycerin 10s, ill prob need a new pair soon now that i think about it…

Reply

Janae- you read my mind when you asked this question. I’m almost 20 weeks pregnant what aren’t I craving LOL. I constantly crave fruit and raisins and cereal…did I fulfill the craving??? Oh my gosh I think you know what happens if a pregnant woman doesn’t get the food she wants/needs. Hahahaha. My husband promised me turkey burgers and roasted pineapple on the bbq this weekend. Can’t wait:)

After noon snack has been cereal (mixture of Rice Cripies, Kashi, and Honey nut cheerios) or Cottage cheese and beets.

I’ve worn Asics Nimbus for the last 10 years….love them and scared to ever try anything new. Why fix it if it ain’t broke:)

Love Brooke’s hairstyle…she should get into modelling:)
Happy Wednesday!

Love Love Love homemade mac and cheese! My kids however want to eat the boxed stuff so I hardly make homemade anymore : ( My daughter was a lobster (one of my favorite foods ever!) for her first halloween. I still have the costume that you would be more than welcome to for Brooke.

ARE YOU SERIOUS!?!? Do you think I could have the lobster costume? That would make my life complete! Let me know if this works out for you! Thanks Allison!

I am totally serious. The thing has been sitting around forever and I never had anyone to pass it along to. Just email me and we can figure out the details : )

I was in TJ’s last night and even though I rarely eat cereal, even though I LOVE it, I started looking for the FMW…..our TJ’s didn’t have the maple flavored kind and the other ones just didn’t look as good so I am going to hold out to try the maple ones. See now you have everyone craving them! TJ’s should kick you down something, like a free lifetime supply of FMW for your advertising :)

Reply

You absolutely should try trail running you will never want to go back! I love it so much. It feels amazing on your joints, the scenery is great, and you use muscles you have never used for running. I am doing a 50k trail relay December 1 and I am so excited!

Reply

The last thing I ate that I was craving was one of those ring cakes from the grocery store…strawberry cream cheese flavor…amazing! Afternoon snacks are no longer Snickers ice cream bars but lately have been Trader Joe’s hummus w/ veggies or pretzel thins. I haven’t really done trail runs but kind of if you include the hike that run (as much as I can) now and then. The last running shoes I bought were Mizuno Wave Rider ‘s the turqoise ones. Good for you for making Billy mac n’ cheese. The way to a mans heart is through his stomach…dang, I need to cook more. ;)

Reply

Can you send some of that mac & cheese to me?! Looks SO good! & I LOVE mac & cheese- my favorite food! …especially Kraft mac & cheese..so lame, but it is just the best!
I used to do trail running in high school, and I loved it, but I ALWAYS would fall over rocks/ sticks/ ANYTHING under my feet. I was so bad my coach nicknamed me ‘stumble bum’- lol! I would trip over anything & everything…and the team knew just to keep on going, not even to ask if I was ok, that I would just catch up…it was like it was a normal thing! haha!!

Reply

YES! Brooke needs to be a lobster! Take advantage of being able to choose her costume while you can! I received my 4mo olds costume in the mail. She’s going to be a pig… https://twitter.com/LaurinSearch/status/258314926437855232/photo/1

I love trail running, which is good, because there is LOTS of it to be done where we live now. You should definitely try it and don’t set any expectations for yourself. You can never predict what trail conditions will be from one day to the next, so it is hard to set any sort of goal, which is rather freeing, actually! If you are in a woodsy area, your Garmin may not pick up your pace as accurately as if you were on the road. Also, if you normally run with a stride that is low to the ground, be sure to pick your feet up a bit more as you watch for obstacles. My sister-in-law is notorious for trying to keep her feet too low to the ground and tumbling over every little root and rock!

Reply

That mac and cheese looks SO good!! My husband and I run a 5 mile trail/farm road loop around a farm behind our house…about once a week. Last week I ran a 10 mile trail race…it was on a popular bike trail and it was SO hard(for me)…but it was a BLAST!! I actually finished as the 1st female and won a pair of shoes! SO excited!! I fell twice…funny, I made it through the real rocky narrow area and fell on the gravel…just got lazy and was enjoying the view.

Last shoes I bought were Mizuno Wave Rider’s and a pair of Brook trail shoes.

Reply

Trail runs are like bring a kid running through the woods without a care in the world. I love it.

Reply

I got MY first trail shoes this weekend…they are so lovely I can’t bear to get them dirty!!

Reply

I really enjoy trail running. Especially here in Utah. There are plenty of trails and I love the challenge, plus you don’t trip as much as you would think. That was my worry. You might get lost if you can’t read a map. But, I love it.

Reply

Trail running is my absolute favorite. I adore it. You should definitely go sometime! :)

Reply

I eat lunch at 3 every day, too. That is really strange that they have birds in the store. It was really hot yesterday (especially for mid October). It was 88 yesterday and 90 today, here. Crazy stuff!

Reply

God luck to Billy and baby lobster will be such a cute costume for Brooke. I would love to do a trail run but for now I’m sticking with regular races. I’m tapering for my race in 2 weeks then I will start training for a 18 mile trail run. Mac & Cheese looks yummy

Reply

We switch up trail and street running depending on our mood. I absolutely love early trail runs just for fun. I’ve been craving ice cream but not giving in. However that will probably change tonight ;) I love the lobster idea for Brooke’s costume! She will be the cutest lobster ever!

Reply

mac and cheese is the bomb, and you are a stellar chef these days! i want a baby just so i can dress her like a lobster.

Reply

I went on a trail run one time and was terrified the whole time that I would fall and injure myself! It was beautiful but I had to go a lot slower and I rolled my ankle quite a few times. I think I’ll stick to roads. :)

Reply

Holy crap that lobster is huge!!

Mmm, that dinner looks amazing, nice job!

Reply

That mac & cheese looks AMAZING!! And I usually crave sushi (like everyday) but it’s such an expensive habit! My afternoon snack has been consisting of peanut butter puffins dipped in dark chocolate dreams peanut butter! OMG so good.

Reply

Cinnamon rolls. I’ve been craving them for a while now. It wasn’t until two days ago that I finally broke down and made them from scratch. I inhaled two that evening and then two the next day. Now I’m going to have to run it off. My new motto: “Will run for food”. That’s the only way I can enjoy the really good stuff. Now…that Mac and Cheese is calling my name. : ) It looks delicious.

Brooke would make the cutest lobster ever!

Reply

brooke would make a cute candy corn or pumpkin. or anything really.

Reply

Homemade mac ‘n cheese is the BEST. Multiple kinds of cheese is key. That lobster picture is so cute! And yay for trail running! I’m just getting into it and it’s a lot harder than road running, but so much more scenic.

Reply

After doing some road running, I pretty much exclusively run trail now. It is so much more fun and exciting. Plus, it is easier on the body :-)

Reply

I am craving Slutty Brownies since I saw the recipe last week. Decided I need to make them for our family dinner this Sunday. Heading to the grocery store in a few minutes!

Recently for my afternoon snack I have been having fruit of some kind. Yesterday it was the sweetest apple I have ever had! It was a honeycrisp.

I love, love, love trail running! It is my favorite!! Put me in the woods and I am a happy girl! You should try it, but only if you want a new obsession. The last pair of running shoes I got was a pair of Vasque waterproof trail running shoes.

Reply

OMG! I have been craving mac and cheese like no other the past 3 days. I just got a box from the store yesterday and i swear it will be made soon. But your homemade version looks amazing!

I haven’t trail run before. Terrified of tripping over a root or a rock since I can barely walk properly without walking into a wall or stubbing my toe ;) My gil (granpda in law) has done a ton of trail runs. 50k and more. he took us hiking on one of the trail portions and I am amazed at how people can do a marathon + on crazy terrain and elevation changes.

last pair of running shoes i got were Nike, several months ago, though I would like to widen my running/hiking/walking shoe collection. New Balance caught my attention last night with the only brand being made on USA soil. Found a shoe I like from them, but I need to work it into my budget!

Reply

My last craving was last night for a big bowl of spaghetti with a meaty sauce, it made an awesome dinner last night :)
Right now i’m craving toast with peanut butter and banana… i’m thinking it will make a yummy snack
my afternoon snack has been chocolate protein powder banana soft serve lately… its getting colder here so I always eat it under my blanket
I love trail running and do it often however, my big mistake is I haven’t bought trail shoe’s yet and I have twisted my ankle too many times to count…. I should probably get on that

Reply

That is quite the ADORABLE SPIKEY mohawk :)

I also LOVE mac and cheese, and only the full fat kind. I am craving that now (spicy maybe with some jalapenos!)

My afternoon snack is usually post great grains cereal or a half a clif bar to fuel my afternoon workouts. I have never tried trail running and I am just able to get back into running so I don’t know if I will try it anytime soon.

Reply

when my dog was a puppy (about 2 mos old) we dressed her up as a lobster for halloween :) she absolutely loved it!

I bet the hubs would like homemade mac & cheese. He loves cheese. Anything with cheese. I should do that soon!

Hahaha the lobster. That’s hilarious.

Cute mohawk on her :)

Girl, now I’m craving mac and cheese! I crave many things daily…chocolate, salted caramel, coconut, nut butters, sweet potatoes, cookies….you know, just the usual. :)

Reply

My husband and I were craving pop tarts so I bought them at the store. Note -we have not had them in probably 7+ years. I had half of one and thought – this doesn’t taste good at all! Oh well. Funny how your tastes change over the years.

I’m always amazed at how sweet things are that I use to eat when I was little. Have you had Kool Aid recently?? It’s insanely sweet and I use to love that stuff!

Reply

No cravings, I usually eat a pear for snack so it cuts my sugar cravings a little. That mac and cheese looks delicious!

Reply

I’ve been craving chili and plan to make it for dinner tomorrow!

Todays will be banana nut muffins my mom made and a nonfat vanilla greek yogurt cup.

I LOVE trail running!!! I love doing long trail runs as part of my road marathon training. I have been running in Brooks Cascadias. Love them. My most recent trail race was Dances with Dirt 50K. So hard but so much fun!!

Reply

My latest craving has been pizza, but I think it’s gone now. After my 8 mile run this morning I decided I should reward myself with froyo and since it’s all I can think about.
Afternoon snacks (definitely plural): Lara bar (peanut butter chocolate chip is the best!), string cheese, carrots with nut butter and tortilla chips with hummus.
I don’t trail run. I’d also trip over every little thing and I don’t feel safe running in the woods alone.

That enormous lobster totally freaks me out!!

Reply

You should totally do trail running in NorCal! There are so many trails around (There’s Rancho San Antonio County Park or something in Cupertino/Los Altos area… and the Los Gatos Creek trail turns into a dirt trail if you run far enough toward Los Gatos). There’s a LOT of trail races out here, too :)
Just be careful because I had some running buddies who got injured during a race because they were going too fast down the mountain!

Reply

Brooke is the cutest!
Yes to trail running! It is far more scenic and exciting than running on the road, and time goes so quickly – before you know it you’ve run miles. I just ran a fun trail race in the weekend, and can’t wait for my next one!

Reply

And here I though you were going to say you made lobster mac ‘n cheese…….mmmmmmmmmm! Maybe I ought to;-)

Reply

For the last couple of years, I’ve been running about 4 long distance races a year: 2 marathons, two trail 50Ks. I prefer trail 50Ks to trail marathons because I don’t ever want to compare the finishing times to my road ones. Alternating trail and road races has really helped make me faster and stronger, all the while I stay uninjured(!!!!!). You really should give it a shot!

I trail run in the Brooks Cascadia. It is very muddy here about 9 months of the year, so a knobbier shoe really helps me out a lot.

Reply

Well, now thanks to you I am craving TJFMW and peaches. Go figure!! And OMG LOBSTER BABY! She’s going to be adorable!

Happy Wednesday, Janae!!

I think trail running would be fun but I’d be worried about tripping as well…

I am the uber picky one that only wants certain things each night for dinner!!

A few things:
1. You will love trail running. So fun!
2. If it wasn’t already 4pm I would totally go to the store right now to get everything to make that mac and cheese. Yum. Already copied down the recipe :).
3. I am super jealous that it is hot there. Today is the nicest day I have had so far in Rochester and its probably in the high 60’s. Its been windy and cold since I got here. Sad. There are some amazing fall leaves though, so that is a plus!

Reply

1. I totally have that striped shirt from target that you’re wearing in the picture with the pan of mac’n’cheese :). So soft! and good fall colors, too!

2. ever tried inov-8 trail shoes? i won a pair in a raffle at a trail race this summer, and i really like them!

Go out to Rancho San Antonio Park — you won’t be disappointed.

In response to that grocery store picture- I’m a food inspector and part of my job is to inspect grocery stores. When we find a live bird in a store we treat it the same as finding a live mouse, since birds can carry just as many diseases. It’s not pleasant, but I figured I’d share, haha! :)

Reply

That picture is frightening! I have recently really fallen in love with trail running – I started a series on my blog so check it out if you’re interested!

Trail running is da bomb!!! The only time I run on pavement is during races…every other time it’s just me and nature…I love it. It’s addicting and I just cannot get enough. I am going to have to be doing more road running though as I’m in training for the Boston Marathon. Shin splints here I come!

Reply

Saucony! BOOM!! Billy is hilarious. When we did the Ragnar, we were talking about running when we first met (naturally) and he knew more about my Saucony’s then I did. That is also when I learned of your blog and became addicted to it and have to read it every day. (freaky, but I’m not stalking – promise)
I’ve become a lot more Saucony savvy though. I did a trail run this weekend (not my first) and I LOVED it even though I was in Colorado and had to do it in regular Saucony Guide 5’s. The best news is that I got at least 5 compliments on my shoes. Double BOOM!

Looks like you are settling into the bay area just fine! :) Glad you like it! Your baby girl is adorable! :) BTW I always write JK all the time and i say it even more and my friends aer like you are kidding? And then it makes me think, wait no! ahhaha silly
