Dinner with the family and Garmin 10 Review

Brooke has a constant look of surprise on her face. She loves having her eyes wide open so she can take in as much of her surroundings at one time as possible. We have also decided that she has the most active toes in the world, they are constantly wiggling around like crazy.

Last night Brooke got to hang out with her favorites: 2 cousins, my aunt and my uncle.

IMG 4600

They always have the best food starting with this amazing drink.

IMG 4596

These are my two favorite appetizers in the whole wide world.

IMG 4595

The salad had a ranch-chipotle dressing that I am going to have to go buy today and the salmon was absolutely perfect.

IMG 4598

After dinner my aunt and I went on a walk while Billy and my cousin played ping-pong, who would have thought our Sundays would be so similar to the ones we used to have in Utah… I love it.

I have never actually been inside a Whole Foods (I should be kicked out of the blog world for that) but I have tried different foods from there… including this ice cream that my aunt gets from Whole Foods (does that mean it is healthy if you buy it there?). By far the best cookies & cream ice cream ever and you know you can take my opinion on ice cream seriously because I have tried every ice cream the world has to offer.

IMG 4601

My cousin and uncle are really into amazing quality chocolate so we had a little testing session too. I am more of a Milky Way girl (remember I have the taste buds of a 3rd grader) but Billy loves all of these fancy chocolates.

IMG 4603

And last but not least I finally had a chance to try out the Garmin 10 (I can’t believe it took me a full 36 hours to tell you about this because I usually tell you everything the second it happens because we are close like that).

DSC 4137

I would like to personally thank Jillian Michaels for giving me a slight muscle in my arm… this is a first. And yes I am flexing my hardest for the picture.

I REALLY liked:

-The small size, it is really comfortable and the fact that it looks awesome (you can wear it as a normal watch too).

-It gathers all of the information that I want to know about my runs.

-It is crazy easy to use.

-The price is too good to pass up.

Parts I didn’t love so much…. (To be expected because it is so much cheaper than other GPS watches. I wouldn’t call these flaws because it is such a small watch and so cheap that these things are to be expected)

-The battery wears out quick when you are using it. It does last for a long time when on standby.

-No menu customization, you can’t choose what you are looking at on the screen and I like to see pace, time, MPH and distance all on the same screen because I am OCD like that.

Great GREAT watch for casual runners and easy days but I will wear my garmin 305 for speed work and races.

Do you ever shop at Whole Foods? What do you buy there?

Do you like dark chocolate? Fancy chocolates?

Tell me about a new running product that you recently tried (new shoes, watch, fuel, clothing) and tell me what you think about it! I am always looking for more ways to spend all of our money on running gear.

Did the weekend make you more tired or more rested?

Check out your guns ;)! That bit about never visiting Whole Foods made me laugh- more power to you (although I do love that store)! Dark Chocolate is my favorite, especially LIndt. That being said, I am equally happy with a Kit Kat or Reeses!

Reply

Billy loves Llindt too:) Hope you are having an amazing day and you get to go on a fun trip to Whole Foods soon!

Don’t feel bad…I have never been a Whole Foods either! I love chocolate, but I am not really a fan of the fancy chocolates. I do like dark chocolate though! No new running gear here recently, but I love my Garmin 405 cx, as I am OCD about all of that stuff too! It really depends on the weekend, but usually more tired because I tend to have more time to run and put in more miles! :)

Reply

Good to know I am not alone in the OCDness of the Garmin:) Hopefully you are a little more rested after this weekend! Have a great day Brooke (PS I love your name;)

Oh and I write every down/log everything as well! :) I am, thank you! Have a wonderful week! Ha, ha…thanks! It is a great name! ;)

For my long run Saturday, I tried the Salt Tablets that Amanda from Run To The Finish recommended. They really helped me not get sick, and make it through in this blasted AZ heat. I will use them from now on for sure. Brooke’s little toes are constantly going because she dying to get out there and run like her mama. I’m predicting she’ll be walking at 8 months if not sooner and running by 12 months. :) I don’t go to Whole Foods much becuase it’s rather far…I go to Sprouts and Trader Joes.

Please come by and check out today’s Motivate Me Monday guest post…she’s a friend a friend of mine who’s lost a lot of weight and found her inner runner.

Jessica! I am so so happy that the Salt Tablets helped you out, that is awesome! I can’t imagine running in that heat! I think you are right about her running by 12 months ha! On my way over to your blog!

Love Whole Foods. We purchase their produce, fish, grass fed beef, different yummy cheeses, bulk grains such as quinoa, pearl couscous, etc. Love their salad bar, pizza bar, and bakery. Love grinding our own honey roasted peanut butter too. Yup love Whole Foods….go soon you will love it too:)

Reply

Okay, now you are making me want to go their right this second and I WILL be getting the honey roasted peanut butter too! Thank you!! PS a pizza bar… that is brilliant!

Reply

oh the weekends definitely make me more tired. I stay up later than usual and usually do a lot more than on week days. No, I’ve never shopped at Whole Foods. I can’t believe it! There are several around here and I hear so much about it! I need to go. I loooove dark chocolate so yeah I like trying those fancy chocolate bars. Lately, I’m going for frozen snickers though. Yummo!

Reply

I am the same way about the weekends ha! YUM… frozen snickers are the absolute best!

Reply

i agree on the garmin 10. great for shorter runs or 10k-ers, but i’ll keep my 210 for marathons please :)

Reply

Yep… totally agree!

Reply

My problem with dark chocolate, it has less of a “chocolaty flavor.” I always get a little sad when I eat it becuase Imiss the milky sugary goodness that comes in milk chocolate

Reply

You are so right, I haven’t figured out why I don’t like it but it is because it isn’t as strong of a chocolatey flavor, you are brilliant. I want more sugar:)

Reply

I shop at Whole Foods all the time! It takes 45 minutes to an hour to get there depending on traffic, but it is always worth it. Oddly I get canned dog food there cheaper than anywhere else. I buy fresh fruits and veggies, the best natural queso in the world, whatever fish is fresh for the day, ground bison, bison ribeyes, chicken tenders, REAL frozen yogurt (not the sweet stuff), fancy cheese from different places (sometimes I go global, sometimes I go local), new beer for my husband to try, chocolates from a local chocolate artisan store called the chocolate tree. And I hardly ever leave without getting a bottle of chia juice, a slice of pizza of the day, and a sticky bun. YUMMM!

I like dark chocolates if paired with something, like a piece of fruit dipped in dark chocolate, or a dark chocolate covered caramel with sea salt. I prefer milk chocolate to be paired with peanut butter. The dark chocolate peanut butter combination isn’t as rewarding for me.

Best new running shirt from Oiselle is called the Stripey LongSleeve ScoopNeck. They send me the violet and it is super soft and stretchy, wicking, and has nice comfy thumbholes to make getting in and out of jackets easier. I loved it so much I immediately ordered the indigo and light gray versions too! http://www.oiselle.com/shop/running-tees/stripey-long-sleeve-scoop-neck

The weekend made me more tired. But that is good! If I have a good action packed weekend I am mentally rested but physically tired. If I have a lazy do nothing weekend I am sort of in the doldrums at the beginning of the week and even if I am not physically tired I would be in a lazy state. The moral of this story is: work hard, play hard!

Reply

Okay, you just made me want that shirt so bad! I LOVE the indigo and light gray! I am so glad you had an action packed weekend:) I think I need to go get some cheese and the fresh fish of the day at Whole Foods right this second! Hope you are having a great Monday!

Reply

I loovvee dark chocolate. Our favorite as of late has been either a 72% or 80% Endangered Species brand. I’ve been in Whole Foods a few times but I’m not in love with it. Now Wegmans…that’s a different story…I love that place (I think they’re mostly NY, NJ, and PA). Glad to hear you’re still getting family time in. :) Brooke looks so curious in that picture, lol..too cute!

Reply

I haven’t been to Wegmans either, next time I am on the east coast I will have to go in! Hope you are having an amazing day Melissa!

Reply

because i am broke as a joke, i don’t do a lot of shopping at whole foods but i do go there when i need random items sooner than amazon can get them to me. if i’m out of pb2 and i don’t have time to wait a day (which let’s face it i don’t because i need a pb smoothie every day of my life) i’ll stop by. i also will buy meat/fish there if i’m having a nicer dinner. like maybe once a year. i love to go there and browse though. sometimes they have really good deals! most of the time i leave in tears that i can’t afford it and make my way back to my local giant.

Reply

That is awesome that you order food through amazon… what kind of stuff do you get through them? I am always looking for good deals!

Reply

like EVERYTHING. for real though, i order pb2, xanthan gum, flours, protein powders, extracts and flavorings…pretty much anything i can find cheaper than in the store. i also have a student email address since i’m in grad school so i get amazon prime for $35 a year which makes it totally worth it for me and way more convenient since i only have to wait a day or two at most to get anything i order. you can use billy’s law school email to get amazon prime free for a year too, not sure if you knew that. it’s amazing.

Reply

I wish we had a Whole Foods here!
I love dark chocolate and keep a bar of it in the house at all times.
This weekend left me rested :)

Reply

I am so glad you are feeling rested and hope you have some dark chocolate asap!

Reply

I live only 1.1 miles from the Taza Factory (yes, I actually have run there for chocolate) and it is AMAZING! I love how their chocolate tastes so complex and doesn’t have any additives. Every year the owners travel to the cocoa growing countries and buy directly from the farmers. The Cinnamon and Coffee flavored discs are so good! PS they give tours with unlimited samples…

Oh I love Whole Foods. IMO its reputation for being super expensive is not entirely justified. If you shop the sales (they post their sales flyer online) you can get pretty good deals. Plus, you really do get what you pay for in terms of quality. I basically buy sale items and things I can’t get elsewhere at WF, and go to Trader Joe’s for everything else.

Reply

1.1 miles… that is AWESOME! That is so cool about the owner going straight to the source for the cocoa! I need to go on a tour asap! Good to know you can find awesome deals there!

Reply

I don’t live anywhere near a Whole Foods, but I’m going out of town today for work so I get to hit one up! So excited!

Reply

Have fun on your work trip and going to Whole Foods!

Reply

Normally I come to work Monday completely drained from the weekend but I am actually really well rested this morning…but that also may have something to do with the giant iced coffee I downed…
Thanks for the honest review of the new Garmin. I’ve read a few reviews and they seem to have left out the few negatives you pointed out. I’m not running marathons (yet :)) so this may be a good GPS for me right now though.

Reply

Karen, I am so glad you are feeling rested today (and that you got your iced coffee:) I definitely recommend the Garmin 10 for shorter distances and the price is awesome!

Reply

Thanks for that Garmin review!! I don’t own a GPS watch yet, but when I saw this one come out last month I’ve been dying to try it!!

I love dark chocolate all other things chocolate.. Except for chocolate ice cream for some reason.. haha

As for new gear… My fiance just got me the Swiftly Tech 1/2 Zip from Lululemon for my birthday!! I love that it has a pocket to hold my keys, and thumb holes, plus the option to flip over the sleeves to be mini mittens when its cold!

I had an amazing birthday weekend, we went camping and hiking! so much fun and I feel very well rested, plus I took Monday off to get extra rested up! ;)

Reply

AHHH Billy is the exact same way about chocolate ice cream and I just learned this last week. OH, your fiance is awesome, i love anything from lulu! HAPPY HAPPY BDAY!! Best bday weekend ever!

Reply

I just got that Garmin! Do you ever have problems with it not finding your location? I love everything about it but that has really been bugging me – one time it never did find me and I just ran without any info!

Reply

I have only used it once and it didn’t do that but I will keep trying it and let you know:) If I were you I would send it back for a new one because that would drive me CRAZY if it couldn’t find my location!

Reply

Look at those guns! Haha. Sounds like a wonderful Sunday!

Reply

Hahaha thanks:) Hope you are having a great day!

Reply

Your arms look awesome!! And, as Brooke get bigger and heavier, you’ll have a constant workout lifting her :)

No Whole Foods near where I am but hopefully one day I’ll get to hit one up…

Happy Monday:)

Reply

That is so true… Brooke will give me killer arms:) Come visit me and I will take you for froyo and then we can go to a Whole Foods together! Have a great day Lindsey!

Reply

I’m in Canada so not in the States much but if ever we’re in your neck of the woods, we’ll definitely meet up:).

Have a great day

When my daughter was an infant she used to turn her feet in little circles constantly. They were never still! Now she’s 5 and she’s NEVER still and she NEVER stops talking. Just saying…you’ve probably got a little livewire on your hands. :)

Reply

YES, that is exactly what Brooke does. I have a feeling she will never stop talking either ha! Hope you and your daughter are having an amazing day!

Reply

Speaking of dressing, there is this jalapeno greek yogurt dip at Costco. You MUST try it! It will change your life!

Reply

THANK YOU for telling me about this dip because we are going to Costco tonight and so we will get it. THANK YOU and I hope you are having an amazing day!

Whole Foods is amazing girl! We just got one here in Charlotte and everyone is obsessed, including me! The salad bar is to die for and they have a hot bar too, but I haven’t tried that yet. They also have REALLY good gelato!

I love dark chocolate! I used to be more of a milk chocolate girl, but I think dark has won over.

I recently got a new long sleeve Nike dri-fit shirt that I wore this weekend for my race and I loved it! I got a tad warm during my race because it really wasn’t cold yet, but it was wet and rainy so I liked wearing a longer sleeve shirt. I just rolled up the sleeves and that was great!

Reply

I can’t wait to try the salad bar.. and GELATO!!! I am so stoked that you loved your new shirt, the right running clothes are so important for a race. Hope you are having an amazing day and that you get some dark chocolate asap!

Reply

I do shop at whole foods, not a ton because its so expensive, but I love their bulk bin section. Its one of the only places I can buy my beloved roasted buckwheat groats for my breakfast porridge
I love chocolate. Any kind. Any time.
This weekend was surprisingly exhausting, I had my nieces 5 th birthday party on Saturday and then a soccer game Sunday, it was a busy one!

Reply

I rarely shop at Whole Foods, I am definitely more of a Trader Joes shopper! Whole foods is just way too expensive in comparison, but they do have a really good salad bar. I definitely love dark chocolate, any kind!

Reply

You’re looking great, Janae! This weekend (well, Sunday) made me more tired because I ran my first half! Funny story though, I ran 15 miles instead of 13.1 haha… I blogged about it in my most recent post :D. Overall, it was great though!!

Reply

No whole foods here in Logan but when I lived in California I LOVED the endangered species dark chocolate with toffee!!! It is SO good.

My weekend was really fun but very tiring. :)

Reply

I tried salt sticks during my Napa Ragnar and I credit them for not getting sick. They are great, easy and work fabulously!
Dark Chocolate covered pomegranates. The end. Love them.

Reply

I lose track of time and can spend hours in Whole Foods [especially when they have samples] :D PB2 peanut flour… Peanut butter balls [cereal]… Butter rice cakes… Fresh produce… A wall full of different brands and flavors of chocolate… Anything and everything wonderful your little heart could desire!!!

Reply

I love Whole Foods, I just don’t love some of their prices!

Thanks for the Garmin 10 review! I’m thinking about asking for one for Christmas and I think it would be great because I am more of a shorter distance runner!

Reply

I try to avoid WF b/c it’s so expensive (trying to save right now) & I ALWAYS find something I “need” there ;) Hah.

YAY for family nearby! The weekend was awesome-but kinda exhausting. I need a nap. haha

Reply

OMG you’ve never been in Whole Foods? I LOVE IT THERE. haha

Reply

I -wish- I could shop at Whole Foods! I see all sorts of neat stuff from there that I want to try, but we don’t have one up in my part of Canada :( I always make sure to stop by when I’m down in the States though! It’s actually kind of sad… I’m usually just as excited to stop by WF as I am to see all of the other sights lol. A true foodie at heart :)

Reply

Oh I love WholePaycheck..I mean Whole Foods! I certainly enjoy their ice cream, dark chocolate, and salami and cheese! For the staples and such, I go to TJ’s, but for the specialty items, I treat myself to Whole Foods and I take in the samples while I am there!

Reply

great review of the 10, i agree with all of it!

Reply

I am truly shocked that you have never been in a Whole Foods. You will LOVE IT! Trust me…just go :)

Reply

I love Whole Paycheck/Foods. I could wander the store for hours looking and at all the food and products. If/When you go, check out the bakery and deli area. Amazing food. With burritos the size of your arm. The one by you is the closest, but the one in Cupertino off Stevens Creek and De Anza is worth the drive because it is insanely huge and have even more options in the deli/bakery area.

Saturday was tiring (Oktoberfest. Lost the beer stein holding contest [the winner cheated] arms shook like crazy after that) And ran 7.5 miles on Sunday which was rather energizing and fun. Then painted until dark.

LOVE dark chocolate :)

Reply

I LOVE whole foods! I get a lot of things there I can’t find other places, like brown rice tortillas. I also love getting food from the hot bar, salad bar and their bulk bins!

Reply

Ineed to be trying some new fuel options. I don’t like the Gu’s and gels so something more candy like. And I will nee new shoes soon. So I am interested to read through your responses.

I did my FIRST half marathon on Saturday!!!! I owe much motivation to you. It just so happened to be a trail run. It was NUTS!!! The guy who won the race rain it in over 2 hours- if that says anything about how crazy the trail was. But I did it!! Woo hoo! :)

Reply

Wow!!!!! Congratulations! You are amazing and you are inspiring me to do a trail race!!!!

Reply

HAHAHA your comment about WF’s cracks me up! We don’t have a Whole Foods near us either but I’ve been in a few in my time. It’s pretty nice but we do have Wegmans which is almost as good and slightly cheaper.

Reply

Confession…I have never been in Trader Joes…I know right, bloggers everywhere are screaming at me! lol
Another confession…we just got a Whole Foods here in Charlotte and it’s clear across town from me, so I haven’t been there either.
I have got to get a move on these unique grocery stores lol

Reply

Dang girl!! Look at those arms!! GO YOU! …I bet holding little Miss Brooke all of the time has been building those muscles as well as Jillian :)
I have been to Whole Foods…a lot actually…but honestly, I would trade a WFs for a TJs ANY day! WFs just isn’t an ‘every day store’ in my opinion. I need more variety than they offer.
Brooke really does have the cutest expressions!!! & I’ve noticed on her car seat the cute black & white cover that you have- is it an actual cover?? Where did you get it? (if you don’t mind me asking)
LOVE you!

Reply

AHH! Way to go Janae! You’ve got guns!!!
I went one time to look at gluten free foods…never again. My bank account would have to be closed if I ever went shopping there. :/
I love milk chocolate…I would have to go a couple days from milk to really enjoy the dark. (SUPER scientific sounding theory :)
I am trying new balance brand of shoes..usually I’m a nike girl. But to workout more I needed new shoes that weren’t run down. I love them so far!

Reply

The Garmin 10 sounds awesome, I’ve been looking into getting a Garmin but I don’t run enough for a normal Garmin to be worth the price, so this sounds perfect!
I love dark chocolate, I’m totally that freak that can eat unsweetened Baker’s chocolate straight up!

Reply

Hmm, I need some sort of garmin to track my miles/time but I am not an avid runner (go out when I can and nothing more than 5 miles unless its a race).
but $129 seems heavy for that, I feel I can just have my phone track my distance/pace/time until I find I need something more.
Although, I am more than happy to take that watch of your hands if you are not loving it : )

LOVE dark chocolate, its the only kind I will eat (milk chocolate taste too sweet for me, sad I know!)

Reply

I love dark chocolate with chili!! Not sure if you’ve tried bluebell ice cream or not but its made in Texas where I grew up and IMHO is the best cookies and cream. Also the yummiest vanilla and most awesome butter pecan oh and souther pecan pralines and cream. And they have awesome awesome rocky road. Don’t think it’s sold in California though hahaha. We lived in Monterey California for three years-awesome place :)

I have the 305, just got the pink 10. I like it, but the satellite sonetimes takes FOREVER. Never had that problem with the 305. But you have to press start to find the satellite every time you start a run. Anyone else have that issue?
