7 hours straight.

Brooke slept for 7 hours straight, ate and then fell back asleep for 2 hours. I feel like I could fly. This little girl knows what’s up. I didn’t think it was possible for her to get any cooler until this happened. We all woke up this morning super happy.

During this amazing time of sleep I had a dream that reaffirmed that I am obsessed with running, I even think about it when I am asleep! In my dream I was running my half-marathon and decided to wear my normal every day watch instead of my Garmin and I was so frustrated with myself because I wanted to know my pace. I learned my lesson.

During Brooke’s nap I laced up a pair of shoes that I haven’t worn for a long time and they felt really good. I am a huge fan of rotating your running shoes, I don’t know why but I really like to. I did a short review of the Brook’s Glycerins HERE. Please tell me that you think running shoes are beautiful too.

I wanted to do my last long run before my half marathon today because I would rather spend Saturday mornings doing a short run and hanging with the Bman since it is our only free morning together. I was going to run until Brooke woke up or 12 miles. I hit 12 miles at a 7:40 pace before she woke up and so I stopped there. Between using candy corn for fuel (all of my shot blocks at home have caffeine in them and I was not about to have caffeine again) and getting so much sleep I felt really good on this run.

PS other great candy (a great cheaper option to gels/blocks etc… sugar is sugar:) to try out as fuel on long runs are gummy bears, swedish fish, skittles and starbursts.

I can’t stop the egg/veggie/bleu cheese combination from happening. I try to think of making something else but then I know I would be sad if I didn’t make it. Cheez-its and an apple with pb on the side. I can already feel the need for a pb and j afternoon snack.

Billy comes home at 4 on Fridays (he usually stays at school until 6:30ish) so let the party start.

I found your website awhile back and am hooked… And I’m not even a runner (yet). I want to run this 5k coming to my city and was wondering if you have any suggestions on a good pair of running shoes for beginners? I have bad joints from years of competitive cheerleading and need some great support as running often hurts, :/.

Reply

Good luck on your 1st 5K – I’m sure you’ll get hooked on running. We all do! ;-)

Call running stores in your area! A lot of stores will ask you to run or walk around so that they can assess your stride, etc. and you can tell them where you need support. They will recommend shoes and any other supportive gear you might need. I went in and they filmed me running on a treadmill to check out my gait, and I feel about 110% better than I did when I was running in trainers and (as much as I hate to admit it) court shoes.

If money is an issue (or if you don’t want to commit too much too soon), remember that you are not obligated to buy from them! You can always get recommendations from them and shop around.

Cho-pat dual action knee strap, wore it for a year, really helped with knee pain.

Reply

Wow, thanks you three for the wonderful advice and encouragement! I think I will for sure try to find a running store that can really help, :).

I have fueled with candy corn before, too! Great festive option :D

I agree that candy makes great fuel! And it’s cheaper and better tasting.

7 hours! What a good baby! She’s so smart -she’s already figured out that mama needs some rest! Can’t wait to see how your first post-baby 1/2 marathon goes! You’re already clippin’ away at a mighty fast pace! You amaze me.

one time i put gummy bears in the sleeve pocket of my white running jacket for a race…and, of course, they completely melted (because i was that sweaty!) and turned my sleeve hot pink, blue, green, and all sorts of fun colors. DIY tie-dye!

I can’t believe how fast you have bounced back to running with your uber fast pace! Way to go on the 12 miles! That’s awesome that Brook slept for so long. I bet you feel like a new momma!

Keep up the awesome work!

A few times I’ve dreamed that I missed the start and was rushing around to get across the timing mat to start before they wouldn’t let me. Always involves forgetting something, once it was my purse. (Like I’d take a purse IRL?!) I also think running shoes are pretty. Good luck on your half!

I totally eat Jujubes for fuel. LOVE THEM!!!
I haven’t actually thought about it recently, but I haven’t remembered a dream in a VERY long time … hm.
I only slept 6 hours last night, and the two nights before. (To bed late and up early for work — bad habit … trying to break it, but there’s just SO much to get done!!) However, some of my best long runs have come after sleeping only 3-4 hours after an overnight shift. It’s like I can over-ride my brain when it’s tired and tell it I’m not in pain and I can push harder … Self-destructive? Quite possibly. I’m working on it. ;)

What a good baby Brooke is?!?! I don’t rotate my running shoes. I’d like to, but they’re too dang expensive. I really like Brooks too. I have the ghost 5s. Good luck at your half marathon. Can’t wait to hear all about it!

Last night, I got about 9 hours of sleep. I have been sick all week and have been sleeping SOOO much. I love running after having a great night’s sleep!

Reply

-congrats on the 12 miles! that’s pretty awesome to :) I never thought of using candy as fuel. my stomach usually feels queasy after a sugar load so i dunno how it’d affect me during a run.

I dreamnt of running before and then it turned into flying. like i gather up speed, jump and then fly around before landing and running around again. cool dreams that i wish were possible. :)

i don’t have enough running shoes to rotate. i just go through a single pair until i wear em out and then go for the next one.

the better i sleep, the better i feel on runs. i try not to drink the night before long runs. i’m not drinking all next week before RnRSJ so i can have a good stomach and rest well for the race.

i’ve had some insanely crazy dreams in my time…the weirdest thing is when you don’t remember how odd a dream was until something randomly triggers a memory during the day and you start remember weird clips.
great job on the long run and awesome that u’re refueling with those perfect sugar bombs, inject those glucose carbs straight into the blood stream! :)

Reply

I used gummy bears for fuel during my 10 mile race a few months ago. It worked great!

Reply

I think if my running shoes were ever made in more than one color I would be more inclined to rotate them, but they are only in grey. It is not nearly as exciting to rotate grey, with grey, and more grey as it is to rotate through lots of fun colors.

Reply

I’m trying candy corn on my 12 tomorrow. The block things are fine but make it hard to breathe and chew…seems ridiculous.

Reply

Wow, great job, Brooke!!! I hope my future child is such a good sleeper!

Reply

Oh I haven’t slept for 7 hours in a row in almost 5 years unless I’ve been away from the kids. Maybe once or twice but I have crappy sleepers and someone always has some kind of issue. It is what it is.

Reply

Starbursts are a good candy fuel.

Great run lady. 7:40 pace Wow!

Reply

I am jealous, 7 hours!!!! My kid (3.5 months) max is 4 hours…

I always have crazy dreams where I’m running a marathon but I’m lost. Lots of times, the course goes in and out of buildings and up and down fire escapes. And I’m rotating shoes right now; a pair of nike pegasus and some Saucony Kirvana 3 minimalists.

And I regularly stop at gas stations and use Kit-kats for my long-run fuel. A great change from the Gu and easy on the stomach.

Reply

I don’t want you to hate me so I won’t tell you how many hours of sleep I get. It’s kind of obscene how much I sleep.

Nice job on your run and your shoes really are pretty awesome.

Reply

I loved it when my babies started sleeping more! It was awesome. I love running shoes of all kinds. I’d rather buy running shoes then anything else. I don’t rotate them right now, but I’ve thought it a good idea.
I slept until 10 this morning. I get off work at 10. My bad, but good we didn’t fly last night! Woot woot.
I have thought of using jelly beans, since I like the energy jelly beans. I even compared content and the energy ones have more electrolytes.
Yeah, I’m a nerd.

I operate on grandma hours – basically in bed by 9:30 pm and out the bed to run/teach spin class by 5 or 6 am.

I love using gummi bears as fuel! I have tried the candy corn but they didn’t sit so well in my tummy. But yes, anything gummy for sure!

Reply

You better believe I’ve fuelled with candy! Skittles are my favorite :D Forget all the advice that suggests not to – it works wonders. And so does sleep. I definitely notice a big difference in my energy and overall mood when I get more sleep. Sometimes I try to convince myself that I can get by with just 6 hours, and then I get more one night and see how big of a difference it really makes.

Reply

I’ve fueled with skittles and fruit snacks before!

YAY for 12 miles done. GREAT work, girl. You’re fast. :)

I have crazy and vivid dreams all the time. They are always bizarre. I’ve been dreaming lately about my grandma who died 15 or so years ago. It’s really strange to start having these dreams lately because I had never had a dream with her in it before the last two weeks.

Great job with the run. That is rather impressive for a new mama… or anyone for that matter. I don’t think sleep does a whole lot for my runs. I’m sure if I only slept 2 hours it might. My range of 5-8 hours (normally 6 or 7) all produce equality runs. Either way it’s early and I’m tired. After a mile I’m awake and happy to be out there.

Reply

YAYYYY Brooke!!! She really is a smart cookie- She likes to sleep! I have been remembering my dreams a lot lately- the last one I dreamt that I went swimming in my peacoat. Strange. Before that I dreamt that I bought a baby off of Craigslist (??) Yeah, I don’t know. I’m going to go eat some candy corn now :)

Reply

I need candy corn! Must run to store :)

Reply

sometimes i do, but for the most part i don’t lol i last dreamed about vampires(watched too much vampire diaries lately lol)

i use to dream about running a lot, when i was competitively racing, but now i never do :(

oh yeah it does!!! if i get less than 7 hours of sleep my runs are horrible! more than and i’m flying pretty high :)

i used See’s candy as fuel once lol tasted so good!!

Reply

Oh, I eat candy all the time for fuel. It includes …

* Gummy Bears
* Candy Corn
* Sugar Daddies
* Hot Tamales
* Jelly Beans
* Swedish Fish
* Sour Patch Kids

… yeah … I have a problem. But, luckily my solution is running!

Reply

In fact, I think I’m breaking out the candy corn for the St. George Marathon next week thanks to you!

I dream about running sometimes. My one the other night had something to do with compression socks but now I can’t remember the details of it.

I run (and live) best with at least 7 if not 8 hours of sleep. I only had 7 last night because I had to get up at 5 for work today. Unfortunately, since I work 24 hour shifts on an ambulance we are often awake during the night and then I have to do scheduled running on a couple hours of broken sleep. I’d like to say you get used to it after all the years, but you don’t.

I rotate my running shoes also. I didn’t used to, but as I build a stash more and more I’m able to rotate. The only problem with rotating is still have my favorites and then I don’t like running in the others when I do.

No, I don’t eat candy while running. I’m always afraid I’ll trip or have trouble keeping my breathing pattern if I have to chew and swallow that much. LOL.

Reply

I’m a sucker for some swedish fish for fuel while running!

Brooke’s expressions are killing me, in a good way!

I have the Brook glycerin’s too, also in pink. I’ll eventually get them in blue so I can rotate them. I love them. I don’t run (used to but now have no cartiledge in my knees — unrelated to running) but love their support for all my other athletic activites. I was about to buy another pair when the sales person pulled them out, warned me they were $30 more than the other pair I was considering. I put them on and um, no contest. They feel super stable to me. Which I need, plus they give me about an inch more in height, I think.

Reply

First: Brooke is the cutest I’ve ever seen!!!

Second:I think your running shoes are beautiful too!! I have issues with running shoes, unless they’re pretty I don’t want them!!

So I’m making my first EVER trip to Trader Joe’s tomorrow, I’ve always been way to happy about the idea of going but your posts and love for Trader Joe’s making me even more excited! What are the most absolutely amazing things there that I can’t leave without!?!!

Reply

Okay so this is probably a super weird (creep?) observation but the top half of your not-yet-empty peanut butter jar is super clear! You must really scrape those sides! :)

Reply

Hehe I saw that too.

I don’t rotate my shows because I only have one and I really should buy another one!

I’ll eeally try to fuel on candy on my next long run!

Reply

haha ive noticed that as well!!

Reply

I have Glycerins as well, the blue ones. I love the way they look. I get injured so easily that I’m scared to rotate running shoes, but I should. I’m currently loving my Mizuno Wave Inspires, but also have the Brooks, some ASICS, a pair of clunky Adidas Supernova Sequences, etc. etc. I don’t run long enough to have to eat while doing so (keeping to 4 or 5 miles at a time so I don’t reinjure, but used to gag on Hammer gels when I ran longer). I do love the idea of fueling with candy, though…..

Reply

For everyone who does eat caffine, let me sing the praises of chocolate covered espresso beans!

Reply

She sleeps longer than I do! I always wake up every few hours!

Reply

I want to try straight up vanilla icing as fuel. Think that would work?

Reply

i’ve been running in saucony guides for almost 2 years and just not a fan. finally got an AMAZING person at our local store to really watch how I walk, run, and my wear pattern and the lucky shoe was the brooks glycerin. i’m testing them out tomorrow and i haven’t been this excited about a shoe in a LONG time :)

Reply

I’m excited about reading the Glycerins review…I need new shoes in the next month or so and these are on my short list, these or Sauconys. Off to check it out now.

I can’t do shot blocks, they mess with my belly

Too funny! I have that exact pair of Glycerin 10s! :)

I’m going to take Swedish Fish on my run tomorrow in case I need some fuel…only 8 miles but I’ve been getting sick so who knows. I switch out my shoes because one pair will start feeling less cushiony or just because I like fashion. :) I dream a lot, can’t remember my last one though. Little Mama had a dream I died the other night…so sad, couldn’t calm her down. #clingy

I go to bed early and wake up SUPER early like 9 or 10 until 3 a.m. Yes, it totally affects my running or ability to get out the door if I haven’t gotten enough sleep. Enjoy your time with Billy.

I can very distinctly remember when both of my kids slept through the night for the first time. It feels awesome for your brain and horrible for your milk ducts!

I am all business when it comes to my sleep. I try to get AT LEAST 8 hours every night. Last night it was 9!

Reply

Yay for a good night and great run!

I have to say, I’d love to see the looks on people’s faces if I was on the treadmill with a bag of Swedish Fish with me, hahahah

Reply

I dream almost every night. Love when I can remember them in the morning! I tend to dream more about running when I can’t physically run for whatever reason.

I am lacking in sleep this week. We are all still adjusting to the MUCH earlier start time for the schools here. But I get to sleep in tomorrow and have the house to myself for a couple hours. I can’t wait!!

Is it lame I’ve only ever fuelled with raisins in the past?? I wanna try gummy bears next time!

You kill me!! 7:40/12mi/6 wks post-partum……I have a 12 mi scheduled for the morning run before church….I’m totally looking forward to it, however it may be in rain and definitely around an 8:40-9:20 pace…..maybe even over 10? Wowzers!! I’m slow and I’m like 3 years post-partum. Ha ha! Hey, I get the job done though, right?
Congrats on Miss Brooke sleeping! What did you decide on Babywise? Sounds like she is doing a phenomenal job!
I tried Energy Beans before my run earlier this week and I wasn’t a fan, still a shotbloc fan and I do need the caffeine, so my gels have 2X. Love tangerine.
Holy Cannoli, it just hit me that you ran 12 miles on a treadmill….what in the world? I think them most I’ve ever done was 8? Impressive, impressive!!

Reply

I dream every single time I fall asleep, but I seldom remember them until later. At some random point later on in the day, I will suddenly remember some snippet of my dream and then proceed to sit there for 10 or 15 minutes trying desperately to remember the rest of the dream!! :)

Reply

I am going to try this candy while running thing. I love Swedish Fish, Mike & Ike’s, and Sour Patch Kids. :)

Ok, Janae, you are my post baby race inspiration!! I was JUST looking at upcoming races…anticipating her arrival the end of October….and thinking the soonest that I could run a race (hoping for a half). I found one on Thanksgiving day, but I know that’s way too soon….but then there is one in the middle of December. I’m seriously considering that one. I’m totally turning to you for my inspiration :D

Reply

YES I can for sure tell a difference in my runs when I haven’t gotten enough sleep. Yesterday morning I had gotten about half the sleep I like to get, my body was NOT liking that, and it REALLY affected both my pace and my endurance! I’m not so sure that it didn’t slow me down by maybe 1-2 minutes a mile. It was BAD. That and having to take walk breaks and STILL DYING by the end of the run! aaaagh! Note to self – GO TO BED EARLIER!!!!!!! :p

Reply

I can’t get over your incredible running speeds – and only a few weeks after having a baby too! Amazing. You’re going to be back up in tip top shape in no time and breaking that 3 hour barrier! Amazing!

Reply

I remember all of my dreams and often dream of running.
I get 8+ hours sleep most nights or I become useless.
I rotate two pairs of shoes at all times. And running shoes are JUST for running.
GUMMY BEARS and jelly beans.
