Being a healthy runner when you aren’t running

What do you think? Does Brooke look more like Billy or me? (yes, I realize that most newborns all look the same but I swear she looks just like Billy).

IMG 3759

My mom says that I had the exact same hair when I was born so at least we know she is mine too.

While my mother in law is in town I begged her to teach me how to make some of Billy’s all time favorite meals that she made for him growing up. His first request was for California Pasta Salad. He uses California in the title of it just because they used to pack this anytime they would go to the beach growing up. It was incredible. Penne noodles, carrots, FRESH/cooked corn, olive oil, garlic salt, ham and olives (she didn’t add any olives to mine, now that is love).

For dessert we had strawberry jello and vanilla ice cream. Don’t you dare make fun of that combo until you try it, then you can tell me how weird I am.

Something I have been thinking about lately is what I can do now when I am not running (the idea of it still makes me die a little) that will help my running in the future. To be honest I really don’t miss it that much because being with Brooke is way more fun but I do want to do things to help me when I do come back.
Whether you aren’t running because of injury, pregnancy, life got crazy or you need a break, there are things that you can include each day that will make your return to running better than ever.

1. Making sure I eat healthy foods. This doesn’t say skip candy and delicious foods but just make sure you are getting in quality nutrients along with your swedish fish.

2. Taking my vitamins. Good thing Billy is responsible and sets them out for me because unless they were injected into my sour gummy crawlers (that pregnancy craving is sticking around for good) then I would never remember to take them.

3. Strength training. I won’t be doing anything crazy but I am going to take time to get strong and build up some muscles.

4. Take care of yourself. Do what your physical therapist says to do, ice when you are supposed to, foam roll like a champ, get enough sleep or give your body the rest that it NEEDS.

5. Stay optimistic. It is hard when you are injured especially to stay optimistic but you have two choices, be a downer about the situation or come up with ways to work through your injury and realize that you will be running again in the future,

6. Dream big. Write down your goals and what you want to accomplish in terms of running for when you are back out there.

7. Spend all of that money that you are saving on race entries, running clothes, shoes and running fuel and spend it on adorable baby clothing…oh wait that is just me… spend it on things that make you extremely happy.

Brooke is an absolutely gorgeous girl – and you can definitely see a lot of Billy in her! The facial expressions and eyes particularly. But I’m sure she will look more and more like her Mom very soon!

PS. She seems to love sticking that little tongue out. So precious!

I am not running now–my body needs a break (aka no period). Last time I was not running (stress fx) I did not handle it that healthy. I ate junk–which made me feel worse. This time I am doing some light cross training and strength training and following the 80/20 principle for eating. Its still tough not to run, but honestly sometimes taking it easy is healthier than pushing yourself too hard.

Brooke’s little flower headband is too much….SO cute!
I love this post…it is so important to keep life balanced and in perspective whether or not you can/should run at that particular time. We ARE runners whether we are running or not and that can always be reflected in our daily lives! Thanks!

Brooke is beautiful! I am just catching up now on your blog.

I am just coming off not running. I had a rough summer with two surgeries and I just couldn’t run. I just started again last week.

I suggest you put that little girl in a stroller and do lots of walking. After I had my daughter we walked everywhere! I mean, everywhere. The resistance of pushing the stroller will bring back your core strength—find some hills! I lost 20 pounds in the first two weeks and I really wasn’t trying. That was more than half of what I gained. I hope this helps. I am typing this at 8:12 am…

Congratulations!

Me me me! I’m not running right now! In fact, I’ve been out of the game for about 3 months because of injury, with a 2-week hiatus where it seemed as though I was healed. I wasn’t. (whoops). I think the hardest thing for all of us stubborn runners out there is to actually REST when we’re supposed to, not just stop running. Rest means a lot more than that: don’t walk around a lot, don’t hit the gym in hopes that the elliptical won’t aggravate your injury then do it for an hour because it only hurts “a little”. Chill out! We’re bad at that. Take up a sedentary activity: watch movies, do puzzles, get crafty – much of America does these things every day! You can too!

From earlier photos I thought she looked a lot like Billy! You are simply glowing. :)

So – I’ve been away on my honeymoon and just caught up on your posts.. Congratulations, Momma! Brooke is such a beautiful baby -and you are absolutely glowing. It is hard to believe you birthed a baby in all of your after shots!

Enjoy all of the moments with you new little addition! :)

I’m just now (slowly) adding running back in, after a sfx. I was grateful to have been able to fill the void with deep-water running, in the pool. For me, it wasn’t just a need to fill the exercise void. I needed to have “me” time. As a wife & mom that’s so important for the whole family’s sanity. ;)

I think Brooke’s features resemble Billy’s more. That hair’s all you, though…
She’s SO beautiful!!

I totally agree that a little time off from running can be a good thing. Your leg muscles get to fully recover, but you also get a lot of time to think about how much you miss running, which is a feeling you can remember when you’re in the middle of a tough run and don’t feel like sticking it out.

I’ve read that a lot of babies look like their dads so that the dads know that the baby is theirs and will help take care of him/her, so you’re probably right about Brooke looking a lot like Billy. :)

Reply

Wow, wow, wow….what a beauty Brooke is!! Congrats again to your family! I am glad to hear you are not running right now. Your body just ran a marathon called labor so I wouldn’t even think of exercising for a few weeks. Let your body recover! I don’t blame you for holding her all day long…she is a doll :)

Reply

She definitely looks like your husband! I’m preparing for my first marathon next month :) Staying healthy and doing fu,n easy runs until then !

Reply

I’m gonna need that detailed California Pasta Salad recipe STAT because it looks THE BOMB and I want to eat it right off my computer. Thankyouverymuch

Reply

How about strap on your Garmin, take Brooke in the stroller, and find your perfect 5, 8, 10, 13.1 routes from your front door?

Reply

Oh you must must must get gummy vitamins and calcium chews from Costco!! I never forget to take them. In fact, I have to keep count or else I’ll eat too many in one day.

Reply

Your daughter is beautiful and looks just like you both!

I just started running again a few weeks ago (YEAH!!!) after three months off. During those three months I did as much as I could. I did a TON of strength training, along with the free weights and machines I did a lot of 10-12 lb ankle weights working my leg. I cross-trained as much as possible with swimming and the bike or elliptical. Or just walking.

Reply

I think she looks totally like Billy. She’s beautiful. :)

Reply

She does look like Billy!! So precious :)

I am running lots right now, but taper time starts at the end of this week! I think it’s going to be really tough tapering for 2 weeks when my first marathon is coming so soon… It’s counter-intuitive (even though I know it’s best for your body!) to cut back mileage before the race when I feel like I should be squeezing in the last mileage!!

Reply

That girl is all Billy. But that hair is all you. So pickin’ cute.

Reply

I had to give up running this summer for health reasons. Turns out overexercizing/ not consuming enough calories can lead to bad things ;) I ran for the first time on Friday after months. It was a SLOW mile on the treadmill, but it felt wonderful and I’m pretty sure I had a smile on my face the whole time. Hang in there…you’ll be back to your speedy self in no time!!!

Reply

I’m in your boat too Lauren. Knowing I’m not alone helps a lot.

Reply

No running for me right now :( Running is causing contractions and baby needs to bake for at least a couple more months. I agree with your list–it’s so easy for me to not take care of myself when I’m not running, then I really feel like crap. Walking for me now….and walk with Brooke! She’ll love being outside and so will you.

Reply

She is adorable! And you look great! Damn girl!!

Hey Janae, I think your adorable daughter is a good mix of both of you! Congratulations!
After both my kids were born I didn’t run for a couple of weeks and instead just enjoyed that little extra time I had during the day to bond and snuggle with them. But, since I had to stop running towards the end of my pregnancies I was just itching to get back into it as well and get a good sweat on. One thing that is fun to do (if you haven’t already) is to research and buy the perfect (for you) running stroller! I have the BOB revolution and I absolutely LOVE it. While solo runs are a treat, it is also fun to show the world to your little one and take them along….adventures with mommy in the neighborhood (and, when they get bigger, stops at the park!).

Reply

Brooke is so adorable in that headband!

I know that you are sad that you can’t run but I am sure that you will have a list of goals to complete a mile long by the time you can run again! As long as you are taking care of yourself and a little strength training never hurt anyone (I should listen to my own advice) you will be ready to go in no time!

Reply

I think she looks just like you, Janae!

Reply

I don’t know if this is true or not. BUT I heard that most newborns look like their father because that way, the father is well aware it is THEIR kid and they will be more likely to stick around (this theory stems from like….the caveman days) and help.
I don’t know if it’s right but I thought I’d pass along the myth :)

Reply

I love the pink flower headband! So stinkin’ cute.

When I was sidelined a few months back I tried to focus on all of those things – strength training, stretching, foam rolling, eating well and lotslotslots of cross training! Running will always and forever be there when you get back! :-)

Reply

I think she has Billy’s eyes/cheeks but your nose. :) That jell-o/ice cream combo actually sounds enticing!

Reply

Hey Janae, you are probably right about Brooke looking like your husband. Most babies look like their fathers when they are first born and it is an evolutionary defense mechanism that developed over time! Basically, babies had a better chance of survival if the father recognized it as his child and provided for the mother and child. Pretty hard to argue with who the mother is (that whole labor thing) but not as cut and dry in the prehistoric days for dad identification. So, babies usually resemble their fathers very early on and sometimes that changes as they age!

Reply

She is so darling! I’m getting back into running after 2 weeks of minimal running b/c of a calf injury. Looking forward to half marathon training next week!

Reply

I think she looks just like you. There have been a few facial expressions in your pictures that are reminisce of Billy, though. A pretty good mix of the two of you, so far.

Reply

Not all newborns look the same..because yours has a cuteness factor of about 1200 on a scale of 450. SERIOUSLY. She’s beautiful!

Reply

Brooke is absolutely gorgeous!! You just rest & love on that little snuggle bunny all day =). I am LOVING your running tips right about now, since I’m out with a stress fracture in my heel….you are such a great motivator! Whoop whoop!

Reply

Cross train, cross train, cross train. And find something new that you love. I jumped on a bike when I was hurt. I had a great doctor that was also a runner, so he understood that injured didn’t mean sit around and do nothing. He encouraged me to jump on a bike or in a pool.

Reply

I am not, just need a break. I ran hard for 3 years and my body told me it was break time, which is understandable :)
Eat healthy, stay active in other ways – walking counts!
I am with you all newborns look similar to me, but I see you both in her!

Reply

I love jello and ice cream! It’s the best combination ever. I grew up eating it, hehe.

Also, Brooke’s gorgeous! I love her cute baby clothes :)

Reply

I’m running less than 10 miles a week right now – still getting my cardio in with spinning and focusing on strength training. It’s nice to take a break, but I do miss it (plus it’s weird to have a blog that has “running” in the title when you aren’t really running).

I’m sure it will be really weird NOT running these next few weeks – but this time is just going to fly by. Use the time to energize yourself and think about what you miss the most. That makes getting back into it so much fun!

Reply

Brooke is a doll and you look absolutely gorgeous too!!! What a lovely looking family :)

I’m not running now… feeling my body needs some rest. It’s hard… like my body is tired and needs rest and get back to a more balanced hormonal stage, muscle recovery or whatnot but in the meantime, it’s craving running… WEIRD I guess all runners can relate to that.

Anyway, congrats and so happy for you! Just take in every moment you have now and let the future (running, no running, faster, slower) be a fun adventure in the future not something for now to worry about :)

Reply

I love this post! First off because of Brooke- she is so darn cute and you look gorgeous! I can’t believe you just had a baby and look that amazing! Second off, because I have an IT band injury right now.

It started with my right and now it is my left knee. It’s extremely discouraging because I have a half marathon coming up in October. I have a race this weekend and it was a 10K, but my knee is feeling a little better so I’m going to drop down to the 5K and see how it goes. It’s hard to stay positive throughout and injury, but you’re right, you can either mope around or just be positive and things will get better soon!

Reply

That pasta salad looks amazing. I’m going to have to try it. Did you tell your MIL that she’s going to be teaching your readers how to cook too?

I didn’t run last week and it was ROUGH, but your tips are right on.

Reply

Ok so 1) Most babies look like their father’s. The reason scientists have postulated is because evolutionary wise, if the babies look more like their dad’s then the father is less likely to abandon them. (Not saying its true just a fun tidbit of info for ya lol)

2) you need gummy vitamins then you would wake up think about Brooke and then think about how you get to eat gummy bears first thing in the morning :)

Reply

I’m not running now at 24 weeks pregnant because I have way too much pain after I run. It’s depressing – big time. Walking is okay but I don’t get that awesome feeling like I do after a run.
I’ve been doing Fit MOM DVD workout at home, some prenatal yoga and walking.
Our first born looked like her Dad forever and now, at 2 is starting to look more like me.

Reply

Yeah, all new babies look like their daddies. I still can’t see anything of me physically in my little two year old boy, but he speaks like me and acts like me, so he’s definitely mine!!! He has my freckles too…hurrah!!!

Glad you’re not stressing about not running….there’s so much time left for running but only this time when Brooke is so tiny and so sweet!! You look amazing, hope you’re doing okay. I was so scared when I had my baby, it took me a while to be sure I wouldn’t kill him. He’s still alive BTW :) So I hope you’re enjoying this amazing time.

I’m taking a break from running doctors orders, so that hubby and I can make a baby of our own:)

Struggling a bit from the sudden lack of endorphins but it’s going to be absolutely worth it – as you know!

Brooke is impossibly cute, and you look amazing! Hope you’re feeling ok.
That pasta salad looks and sounds delish. I like the way the corn looks in there.
Great tips- I especially like #4. It’s so easy to think you can try running or something before you should, when it’ll most likely just set you back.
I’d add in to spend time with friends and family that you don’t see as often. Take advantage of having more free time! (Obviously that’s more for someone who is injured rather than someone with a new babe. I think moms are busy enough!!)

Reply

Jelly and ice cream. A staple of an English birthday party since the world began.

Reply

Those are great tips, things I should also be doing now because I AM running! First 16 miler yesterday!!!

Reply

Also not running (as much) currently trying to get my period regular so my husband & I can have a baby too!! :)

Reply

I’m not really a runner, but running was a part of my weekly workout routine…until now. I have a slight stress fracture near my knee and have been off the treadmill for about three weeks. My trainer has me doing hill walking instead to build up the muscle around my knee and still stay in cardio shape – and let me tell you – hill walking is no joke. Dare I say I even like it more than running (my rear gets nice and sore afterwards)?

I’m not sure who Brooke looks like, but she’s adorable!

Reply

I love her spiky hair. She is just so cute. OMG check out this etsy shop I found (for a buddy of mine who is having a baby in Dec) – you may like it to because they have cute baby hats. http://t.co/AMj5cBNH – wait. That link looks sketch. Sorry. I copied my link I posted to twitter. lol It’s normal I swear! Just hover.

P.S. I can’t get over how amazing you look!! xo

Reply

I think she looks just like you! She is too precious and I love her headband! All of these tips are great and are good to keep in mind for a situation that you are in or for someone who is injured/ coming off an injury. After having my IT band messed up a while back I had to remind myself of these things and most importantly to take things slow, I wasn’t going to be able to go out there and crank out 10 miles coming off an injury so I had to start with baby steps.

Reply

I’m not running this week (and I’m kinda dying a bit too) because I’m actually visiting family this week. The conditions are way different for running than used to and there isn’t really anywhere I can run where I’m staying unless I wanna start incorporating hills now at 27 weeks pregnant. I get back home on Friday afternoon and plan to run all weekend to make up for my week off!!

Your daughter is beautiful and you are absolutely glowing!

I’m not running right now! I have a chronic illness that’s currently pretty serious and staying out of the hospital takes greater priority than running. ;) I do miss it, though.

When I took a month off running due to injury, right fuel combined with strength training helped me bounce back easily!

Reply

I’m choosing not to run after having surgery on torn meniscus six months ago. I’m doing lots of core work and strength training with insanity so I have a super health body full of happy muscles that can handle the stress of running when I go back. I’m also trying to drop any extra weight too :) my legs muscles are gone from not running!

Reply

I’m going to try Crossfit. It scares me. Which is good. Really. I can’t wait to feel sore muscles.

Reply

Brooke is adorable! I love all her hair, I didn’t have that much hair until I was 3, so my kids will probably be the same. She looks like Billy, but has your style :)

Reply

She is so cute! I see both of you guys in her :)

I am running right now….and will be until SAT! And then I am taking a break :)

Reply

I think Brooke looks more like Billy right now but as she grows, she will probably look more and more like you.
These are all great tips for people who are runners but can’t run!

Reply

Brooke and you both look so beautiful. Enjoy this precious time together!

Reply

Brooke has Billy’s eyes for sure. And your nose and mouth. A perfectly gorgeous combination!!

I didn’t run till I was about 8 weeks postpartum with each of my 3. I started walking around 3 weeks, though. I must tell you that my body felt fine running at 8 weeks, but I had to completely drain each side (usually have my kids feed on one side, then pump on the other). If I had any milk at all it was totally painful. I even got mastistis a few times. So it was the breastfeeding issue that kept me back more than anything.

I usually only run 1 or 2 days a week all throughout the winter. I figure that gives my body a break (I live in Boston and it is freezing and I hate treadmill running). I do more hot yoga and pilates. By spring I’m feeling strong and ready to run again!

You are the cutest — keep up the posting.

Reply

Adorable Brooke! It’s funny how as kids grow up you think they look like one parent or another. Even my adopted son is always being told he looks just like his dad!
I am running and have a half marathon Saturday!! When I’m out for injury I get really depressed and eat crappy for a while and then I pull it together.
Enjoy every moment as she grows!!

Brooke is sooo cute. I don’t know who she looks more like. When you said billy, I had to agree, but babies change so much and she may very well be a mini you by the time she’s older. It’s hard to tell.

I am not running now either. I have had really crippling hip pain. Going to the doctor, I think its bursitis and its getting way better. Fingers x its not another sfx. I haven’t been doing much at all this time b/c even spinning irritates it. Mostly I’m just walking a LOT. and Hopefully the dr. can give some stretches to get me up and running soon.

Its so good you’re taking a break. you want to remain healthy during this really important time for the baby and you will be up and ready to run and race soon!

I’m running right now, but when I’m not I try to strength train and walk. I think Brooke is the perfect combination of both of you! ;)

Wow Janae! Congrats — Baby Brooke is so beautiful . . Also, way to go on the name — Brooke is one of my favorites.

Congratulations!

I have not checked in for awhile and missed all the excitement.

What a wonderful blessing your Brooke is…..you do realize that next week she will be starting 7th grade like my baby boy is???? Or it will seem that way. Enjoy every minute because they grow up extremely fast!

I went a whole year not running due to plantar fasciitis. I rode the bike and pumped a lot of weights. I was the most firm I have been in my life. Now, I am a little flabby around the arms and I am trying to pump a little more to firm up and get stronger.

I also ate better when I was not running since I was worried about putting on weight. Now I think….heh, I’m gonna run so one more is OK…..trying to get out of that too!

Brooke looks like Billy!

I’m awful at seeing family resemblances, but she sure is adorable :D

Brooke is so darn adorable and you look great, Janae. I don’t think I did my makeup or changed out of sweatpants for the first year of my son’s life :)

I love your tips for staying healthy while not running. I agree that it’s still important to take care your body!

Reply

I think Brooke looks a little like Billy, but I bet she will look more like you as she gets older. According to DH’s family, our 16 month old looked exactly like him when she was born. I didn’t see it, but it made me sad sometimes because she spent nine months in MY belly, and I was dealing with post-partum hormones as well. Now, she looks a lot like both of us, some days I look at her and I see myself (and my mom, we look a lot alike) and sometimes I think she looks exactly like my husband. She’s got lighter hair like her daddy (but born with hair like Brooke’s), an eye color that is exactly a mix of her dad’s and mine, my olive skin tone, and every day it’s something new.

Anyway, she is adorable!

this post came at such a great time. i have a tibial stress fracture (it is an inch or two above that ciruclar bone on your inner ankle). i’m going crazy not running. I think the hardest part for runners is coming to terms with it, and accepting that taking some time off is how things are going to be. once you accept it, it becomes more managable. at least in my opinion. i have to look at the silver lining too – i often ABUSED running (and, of course, my body) by trying to counteract things I would binge on – now i am forced to work on a healthier relationship with food, solve the underlying issues without using running as a crutch.

Reply

By the way you look amazingly gorgeous and Brooke is a doll. I see both you and Billy in her (especially the mouth, all Billy!!). She’s gonna have gorgeous hair like her momma.

Cute and awesome headband. Did you have heartburn with all of Brooke’s hair!?!?!?!

My ankle has been acting up so I took yesterday off. It amazes me how much I get done when I don’t run!

Babies have to look like their dads because how else would they know that she was his? You don’t have to be convinced – you carried her around for 9 months! :D

I remind myself that my relationship with running is so strong, a little time away won’t destroy it. It reminds me of my best friend, even though we may go months without seeing each other our friendship withholds the distance.

Baby Brooke is just adorable, but I can’t tell who she looks like. She just has that newborn face right now. I’m not running either–hamstring strain, doing physical therapy exercises that are turning me into a BEAST. I’m excited to start running again in a week or two. Enjoy that little creature of yours–before you know it you will be chasing her!

I took a few months off running after my half simply because I wasn’t enjoying it any more. Now I am back at it and loving it even more because I get to finally run with the puppy, it’s great!

I think that Brooke has your nose! I don’t know why but I think baby noses are one of the cutest things ever haha

I am debating on cutting back running, but it’s so hard because I only run 30ish miles per week. My doc thinks it ‘may’ be causing me to not ovulate…even though I have regular cycles. I don’t want to cut back though if it’s not the reason. I feel so torn because hubby and I really want a baby! But I feel guilty because I already run so little.

Enough about me…. You look amazing!!! She may look like billy but you can tell she has your amazing personality!

I am glad you wrote this. I am injured. My posterior tibialis has been overworked AGAIN and so I am paying special attention to it by not running and doing my physical therapy. I even invited a friend to water jog with me this week since it’s good for me but so dang boring I need a friend to gab too. So I appreciate this list, a lot.

In other news, SHE IS SO FREAKING CUTE! I saw the pic in my blogger reader and I almost died.

I have been off running more than I have been on for the past 10 months, the result of an injury that was caused by a huge chain of events that began when I was pregnant 7 years ago! But I train just as hard, if not harder, when I am on hiatus so that I am ready to get back to my favorite activity when my body is ready!

I am so glad you found a Trader Joe’s close by! When we moved away from the Bay Area my only requirements were that we live near a TJ’s and a Chipotle. I still miss the great people who worked in my old TJ’s though. Makes me homesick to think about it!

Brooke is a gorgeous baby and she really looks like both of you. She has a lot of your husband’s features but your bright, sparkling eyes!

I embrace the season of not being able to run. If it’s due to injury, sickness, busyness….etc…I embrace it. If not, I get bitter for not being able to run. I had surgery this year and took time off. I actually enjoyed the season by reading books! Something I never have time to do.

All I really WANT to do is run, that means all I CAN do is try and maintain my fitness and a positive outlook!

Brooke is quite possibly the cutest baby around! What a little doll.

If I’m not running, I like walking and easy biking (I have a recumbent bike so it’s even better on the womanly nether-regions…). Strength training is good, but I just hate doing it so I usually don’t.

Brooke is so, so new. I bet in the next few weeks you’ll get the urge to go running again. I’m telling ya, it takes awhile to feel “back to normal.” Even 6 weeks doesn’t seem like quite long enough.

I’m so glad you got your couch! You guys are going to look back at these crazy couple of weeks and laugh one day. You survived it! I’ve loved your attitude through it all. I have a mental breakdown during the first week of bringing home a baby, so kudos to you!

So happy for you Janae :)

Running withdrawals for me! Minor knee surgery and then ended up with a blood clot the extent of my leg – twice!
I love the pictures of Brooke ~ keep them coming! And you look amazing!

Congrats again, she is such a cute baby! I might be biased but babies with lots of hair are always the cutest! I have a question for you about vitamins. What supplements do you take, and are there any you would recommend? I am looking at switching mine up. Thanks! :)
