Last day in Utah and first night in California

Thank you so so much for all of your amazing comments in the last post.  They were JUST what I needed and they reminded me that I have so many amazing friends (YOU) no matter where I move.

How else would I spend my last day in Utah then going on a run with my sister at the gym?  I ran 7 miles and I am going to miss running next to her and talking about everything.  It is okay though because I am sending her a walkie talkie in the mail today so that we can plan to run at the same time and just use those to talk throughout the run.  I already googled it and walkie talkies do work even if you are 1,000 miles away from each other.

I came home from my run and snuggled my little niece on the couch.  The best part about kids is they don’t judge you, she doesn’t mind me coming home and cuddling her when I am sweaty after a run.  Now I just need to have Billy adopt this childlike quality.  I really don’t know how to explain the face I am making.

After more insurance stuff (I had to switch doctors AGAIN) and going to to my Utah doctor’s office I convinced my sis and her kids to go to my favorite wrap place.  It was actually really rude because the wrap place raised the price a ton and put on way less toppings.  The old wraps used to fill us up but after eating this one we both agreed we could each eat at least 2 more before being full.

Should have gotten a Subway like the smart people did.

Ice cream helped heal my anger towards the wrap place (so did a soft pretzel an hour later).

Photo 2 2

We ate our ice cream outside and then took a ride around BYU campus on a golf cart.  I am going to miss the randomness of my life that comes along when hanging out with these kids.

Photo 3 1

Skip the part where I had to say goodbye to my sis and nieces because it was not pretty.  My mom, dad and nephew drove me to the airport and we stopped at Mer’s house (my grandma) to say goodbye, I could have hugged her for an hour.  My nephew and I have such a fun relationship and he had me laughing the whole way until we got to the airport and the waterworks fired up again.  My mom said he had alligator tears on the way home and was coming up with ways to convince his mom to have them move to Cali.

I flew to Phoenix first (cheapness always wins over convenience) and then to San Jose to meet my man and get him to take me somewhere delicious to celebrate his first day of law school.  California, your sandwiches already won me over.

Photo 2

My mom sent me an email last night (I don’t know how she is going to live without my hilariousness in her life) about what they did to help make themselves feel better after I left.  She said that they went to Which Wich and it was delicious and then went and wandered around Costco in remembrance of me.  She said that she couldn’t get herself to buy any grapes while at Costco because that would just be too much for her to handle.  Miss you mom!

——————————————-

Where was the last place that you flew to?   What airline do you usually go on?

Do you have a place that you used to love to eat at that has since gone downhill?

Sugar cone, waffle cone, cake cone or cup?

-I have found in my years of research that if you ask for your ice cream in a cup with a cone on top you will get more ice cream than if you just got it in a cone.

What is you r ‘magic number’ lately?  AKA your favorite distance to run?

So many things to “AWW” at in this post – especially the grapes – but you must be so glad you’re reunited with Billy! I’m sure your family misses you a ton, but it will make it that much better when you see them again.

Reply

Thanks so much Claire, I really appreciate you!! I hope you are having an awesome Tuesday!

Reply

I hope you and Billy are settling in well in Cali! Moving away from family is always so hard. I’m glad you got to enjoy some of your favorite Utah things before you left.

I am such a huge fan of the soft pretzels they sell in the kiosks in malls (and sometimes airports). I can’t walk by one of those places without buying a pretzel.

Reply

Is there anything better than big soft pretzels? I think I need to go get another one today! Thanks so much for your sweet comment!

Waffe cone for sure!! I usually fly southwest and I like them bc they don’t make you pay for baggage:) moving is hard bit your going to love California. I loved in Santa Barbara for a few years and never wanted to leave. Be sure to show us pics when you arrive!!!!

I flew about 11 years ago haha to hawaii, I loved flying.

I used to go to subway all the time, but it just seems so soggy now!

I was going to say waffle cone but once I have a cake cone I’ll prolly say that instead :)

You’ll be able to see your family, it’ll just take some time to get use to being away ffrom them :) skype!!! its free!!! unfortunately electricity is not haha

Reply

BOOO to soggy sandwiches, that is not okay! Thank you SO much for reminding me about Skype… I know what I will be doing today:)

Reply

You’ll get through this! I am a junior in college and every time I move back to school after summer or winter break it feels like the world is about to break apart without my friends and family at home. It get’s better though (and I don’t have a cute, loving husband waiting for me at college ;).

It’s dumb but whenever I am feeling particularly homesick, I always watch this video: http://www.youtube.com/user/googlechrome?v=7skPnJOZYdA&feature=pyv&ad=7478932977&kw=%2Bit%20%2Bgets%20%2Bbetter

Even though I’m not gay, sometimes it’s just nice to hear – it gets better.

Good luck, Janae!

Reply

It gets better… I LOVE IT! Thank you so much Samantha! That really helped!!! When are you going back to college this fall?

I’m going back at the end of August. Two more weeks! I’m a little sad but so excited to see all my amigas at the same time.

I just want you to know my eyes keep tearing up reading these last posts, I can imagine how hard this must be!!! I would have such a hard time leaving my family if I moved away too. California will be good to you, you’ll love it! I hope your family gets to visit you soon!!

Reply

JEN! Thank you so much for your sweet comment, it meant a lot!! My MIL will be here Saturday and I think my mom the next weekend, I am already counting down the minutes! Hope you are having a great day!

Reply

I totally know how you feel leaving your family. Hardest thing ever!!!!! So many new adventures though make it worth it.

On another note, I can’t even talk about how jealous I am that you went to that sandwhich shop (not sure if you wanted me to name it). They don’t have them in FL. Try the Turkey avocado next time….they put on so much avocado its amazing!!!!!!

Reply

Yum yum yum!! Those sandwiches are THE BEST!!! I’m way jealous too

Reply

Thank you so much Hillary and Katie. Okay, I didn’t put the name up because I completely forgot what it was called. It was delicious though! Can you remind me of the name? I will definitely be getting the Turkey avocado one next time (aka today:)

Reply

Excellent advice on ordering ice cream in a cup WITH a cone… gotta remember that one!
Hang in there, you’ll soon have baby girl in your arms and family will be dashing there to meet her! ;-)

Reply

Yes, you have got to try it:) Thank you so much Deb, you are the best!

Reply

So now I’m at work crying and am going to have to explain how this girl I don’t know moved and it’s so sad and she’s pregnant and her family is so far away and…

Yeah. It’s a good thing people already think I’m strange :-)

Best of luck in your new home. Your new baby will be here before you know it and your next adventure will begin!

Reply

Oh Michele, you are such a sweetheart. Seriously thank you so so much! I really appreciate your comment!

Reply

So glad you made it safe! Just wondered if strangers stared at you on the plane wondering if you would go into labor? I had that experience before!!

Reply

HAHAHAH YES!!!!! I wanted to tape my doctor’s note to my forehead so that people would stop staring ha!

Reply

I am getting on a plane tomorrow for the first time in about a year and a half. That’s the longest I’ve gone without flying in a long time. I am going to Los Angeles then to Las Vegas for my little sisters wedding.

I remember when I moved from Spokane to LA. It was tough visiting family or having them visit for while because I got so emotional. Then you get used to it and it is nothing but excitement.

Reply

JESSICA!! Travel safe:) I hope you have a blast in LV for your sisters wedding. Good to know all of these emotions turn to EXCITEMENT:)

Reply

Aw I’m glad you had a great first day and got in lots of family time!! The last place I flew from was from Barcelona to New York! I’m not a good flyer, so it was stressful being in a plane for about 11 hours.. but I survived!! :)

Reply

WOW… 11 hours, I think I would go crazy! Thanks Alyssa and I hope you are having a great day!

Reply

Phoenix! And usually we fly US Airways of WestJet.
Cup all the way :) Totally boring I know!
Enjoy Cali :)

Reply

Thanks Lindsey! PS loved the tennis and drive-in movie date you guys went on:) SO CUTE!

Reply

Oh, Janae! I cannot imagine the goodbyes (honestly, reading that your nephew had “big alligator tears” sent ME over the edge – I’m sure it was even worse for his favorite Aunt;)). I’m so glad you had safe travels! Hope Billy had a terrific 1st day of school:) I remember my first day of law school – it all seems so far away now, but I still remember the butterflies and anticipation! Best of luck to him!

Last place I flew to was Ft. Lauderdale for a half marathon (and at the finish, I got engaged!!) I usually fly AirTran because that airline used to be super cheap. I have several places that I used to love, but after a change in ownership, really went downhill. It’s always so sad. Thank goodness there are always places that pop up that steal my heart. I’d have to say I love sugar cones – definitely agree with you – go for the dish with the cone on top and you get lots more ice cream. It’s the important things in life such as this that keep me comin’ back to your blog (that, and I just love your blog). My magic number recently has been 8. Even when I try to go farther, I seem to feel amazing for 8, and then get tired.

Janae – I’m thinking of you and sending lots of happy thoughts to Cali and you and Billy transition to your new life! Just a few more days until it changes forever – for the better:)

Reply

Chrissy, thank you so much and your comment absolutely made my day! I feel your happy thoughts right now! YOU GOT ENGAGED at the end of your half marathon…. that is the cutest thing I have EVER heard. WOW!

Reply

I couldn’t even imagine having to move away from my family – I give you so much credit, Janae! I hope everything in going good in California!

I usually get ice cream in a cup, but I love sugar cones. I haven’t had one in forever!!

Reply

Thank you so much Heather! I think today you need to go get ice cream in a cup with a sugar cone on top:)

Reply

Yay, so glad you are reunited with your hubsters! Hope Cali treats you well!!! The last place I flew to was Vegas and I flew Southwest. I love Southwest because I can bring two suitcases. I love checking bags. One of the fathers of my golf kids is a pilot for Southwest and I asked him all kinds of questions about whether the company was as great as it was portrayed and he LOVED working for them, so I decided that I would support a good company and fly them as often as possible.

My favorite restaurant got all fancy and up their prices and started serving things like seared scallops instead of eggplant parm. It is sad. Last time hubs and I went there our bill was $75 and hubs said we weren’t allowed to eat there anymore. He was mad that he paid $18 for spaghetti with shrimp and there were only five shrimpy-sized shrimp on there.

My magic running number is 0. Yup, haven’t been on a run since getting preggers. And my magic walking number is 3 or 5, depending on whether it’s a week day or a weekend.

And I don’t really like ice cream. Not sure if we can still be friends, but it just doesn’t do it for me. I love frozen yogurt though! And I like that is a cup.

Reply

Thanks Kattrina! I LOVE SW too. That is so cool that the pilot loves his company too! BOO to your old favorite restaurant… 75 bucks is ridiculous. Good for you to be walking so much, that is awesome. I will definitely forgive you about the ice cream thing;)

Reply

Welcome to California!! First on your agenda today…run in the park, the weather is great! Can’t wait to see pictures of your baby girl, I’m so excited for this new phase in your life to begin :)

Reply

Thank you so much Cortney! My run this morning was awesome, the weather is PERFECT HERE!

Reply

Awww girl, i know the transition is rough but you have such a new exciting phase beginning, its going to be wonderful :)

Last place I flew to was El Salvador last summer…but I have a couple flights coming up…first to Chi-town in October then to the Bahamas in December…although i could totally do without plane rides, they freak me out :( I usually go either american airlines or continental (although now they are united!)

If you ever come and visit NJ, i’m taking you to the ice cream place near us..not only do they have the best soft serve in the world (in lots of special flavors) but they have COOKIE CONES which are ridiculously good. I had an M&M one on sunday with oreo soft serve and it rocked my socks.

fave distance to run is also 7 for me :) although, to be more accurate its usually 7.5..lol. I like that it still feels challenging but not TOO challenging!

Reply

Thank you my dear friend! I am so excited for your CHICAGO flight..MARATHON WAHOO!! Bahamas? That is so awesome, you deserve it! I am going to book my flight to NJ today, that cookie cone sounds incredible!

Reply

Glad you and baby made it ok. Just think of California as a new chapter!

Reply

Thank you and you are so right!

Reply

Last place I flew was from Utah home to California and I always fly southwest.
Waffle cone dipped in chocolate and rolled in crushes butterfingers filled with ice cream.
Lately 6.5 has been feeling good
Moving away from family is tough but don’t worry it’ll get better and on the bright side your little girl is gonna be a California girl!!

Reply

Okay wait a second… your cone description sounded like heaven. Where did you get this cone? We are stoked she will be a California girl!

Reply

Oh how my heart breaks for you. But if anything can heal it, it is that sandwich! ! Yum!
Curly knows how to strike a pose like non other. I seriously love that little girl (totally normal, since we have never met and all ;)) My kids tell me I stink after I run, so either you aren’t THAT stinky or they are just nicer than my kids. Probably both. Lol.
The last place I flew to was Florida. That was a long flight, but I thought our kids did well. Just think, next time you fly, you will have a baby going with you too.
I always claim the restaurant gave me more last time it tasted better. My husband always laughs when I tell him. He thinks it is all in my head. I say, it means I like to remember everything in a more positive light. What a great quality, right? ;)

Reply

I MISS YOU ALREADY!! We will have to do a play date with curly and your kiddos next time I am there. That really is crazy to think I will be flying with a baby next time. I make that claim every single time too ha! LOVE YOU!

Reply

Janae- I feel like you are my real life friend and my heart is breaking for you with all these goodbyes! It sounds like you have a wonderful support system and I’m sure you will make lots of new friends in Cali. And there’s always us- your blog followers that love you! I’m excited to watch you grow into a mom and add a beautiful baby girl into the mix. You will do great! Sending lots of love and best wishes to you, Billy and the baby!!

We are friends in real life.. at least we should meet up and go for ice cream someday:) Thank you so much for your sweet comment, you absolutely made my day! I really appreciate you!

Reply

i just flew back from vegas over the weekend! yay! we flew US airways. I fly a mixture of airlines it seems like. I used to always fly Alaska air becaus they have the best rates in and out of alaska of course (used to live there) but since we have been in NC it seems like delta or US airways has been a common one!

Reply

You made it through the hard day! Sometimes I find relief when a dreaded goodbye is over. Have a great first full day in CA my dear friend.

6.1 and it has to have the .1 just so i know it is a 10K.

Reply

I rarely comment, but am so glad you made it to Cali without a baby. I did about the same thing when I was 36 weeks pregnant with my first baby – from Seattle to Connecticut and I was scared to DEATH!! Loved my new doctor though and everything worked out great, as I know it will for you. All of us faithful readers are excited to see how it all unfolds. Good luck!!!

Reply

THANK YOU JENNIE!! WOW, that would be crazy scary because that is such a long flight. So glad it all worked out for you. Thank you so much for your sweet words!

your blog never fails to make me smile. :)

Hugs lady! I really, really know what you’re going through, except when I moved to Utah, I lived alone for a MONTH. It made it really hard.

You are going to have so much fun on this new adventure with your little girl and Billy, it’s going to be great! And, speaking from experience, CA birth certs are way cooler than Utah ones. Just sayin…

Reply

Sniff…Reading this makes me want to go spend the day with my family. All of them. Every single one of them. :)

Can’t wait to hear about all of things you are going to do in California!

Reply

Wishing you all the best as you settle in to your new home and life in California! I just can’t imagine moving so far away (on top of being so pregnant!) and having to deal with all of the sadness and stress that goes along with it, but you have handled it all so well!

The last time I flew was a few years ago–my family went to Florida. I can’t remember what airline we flew, as it was THAT long ago. :-/

My favorite mileage lately has been 5 miles. It doesn’t feel too short or too long!

I almost always get my ice cream in a waffle cone.

Reply

awww I have goose-bumps reading this (I move in 3-days…), its ‘s sad leaving family&friends, but remember there is always a reason behind our crazy journey in life! :)
on the other hand I am SO excited you are now very close to me in beautiful California and I know you and Billy will LOVE where you are living!!!
once baby J&B arrives and you recover we will go explore San Fran via MINI-CAR…(I forgot what the name of those cars were!)
I hope you’re having a great 1st day here!
XOXO!

Reply

oh my gosh the email your mom sent you is adorable, sounds just like something my mom would do to me haha!

Reply

Moving is tough! I cant imagine how much worse it is when you’re moving away from super close family when you’re really getting ready to start your own.

The last place I flew to was Costa Rica on Copa Airlines. I would totally fly with them again, they were really accommodating and gave us a lot of food and drink (for free!) which is weird because airlines dont usually do that.

Cone in a cup for the the same reason you listed above. Hehehe. :)

Favorite mileage is 10!

Happy you landed safely! I was nervous you’d go into labor while up in the air!

Reply

How did I know that if anything in CA was going to win you over it’d be the FOOD? LOL Glad you made it safely (and still pregnant) and that you’re reunited with your guy!

Reply

The last place I flew to was the Kelowna B.C airport at Christmas via Westjet. If at all possible I fly with Westjest.

Reply

What a hard change! So happy to hear you made it safely. I can’t wait to see how California life treats you with baby girl on her way:) Love your new hair color as well!

Reply

You and your family are in my prayers. It is a blessing when you have met as many people online that you have, so that friendships go everywhere with you. I am still around. I am thinking about going to weebly to start a new blog. I will let you know. I am still around FB and still reading your blog. Much love~Linda

Reply

I flew last month to Seattle and am flying next week to San Fran for a night to see my bestie, who will be there on business! Woohoo! My first time flying in 1.5 years without a baby in my lap (the one in my stomach is a lot easier to deal with right now) so even though the flight is only an hour I’m actually looking forward to it!

Current magic # is 3. I’m running that distance for as long as I can before the belly gets too uncomfortable.

Welcome to California, it’s not usually this hot and humid here!

Awww girl!! They miss you SO much! You’re amazing–and STRONG! Have so much fun!!!

I am probably only about 1/10 as cool as you but seriously I am willing to step in and take your place.

Love you so much girl!

I’m glad you had a safe flight and made it to CA! Good luck settling in out there!!

Janae,

I’ve been reading your blog since I found out I was pregnant this February and started trying to find *real* info on running while pregnant (ie, moving faster than a shuffle). Just have to say it has been wonderful following you and your adventures–inspirational and hysterical all in one package! Welcome to the greater Bay Area, there is an amazing running community waiting here for you–and it will be lucky to have you as part of it.

And, waffle cone of course! Especially during pregnancy.

Reply

your sis better send you daily pics of the gang so we can still see their adorable smiling faces!

sadly my magic number is 3 – but it’s growing every day!

waffle cone!

You know what would make you feel super way better about moving????!!! …peach rings and telling us the baby’s name! I’m totally sure that would up your happy-factor. ; )

Hang in there, sweetpea!

Welcome! You will find more yummy food around here. Go to the farmer’s markets! There’s a Panera, Five Guys, Pizza My Heart and Pinkberry all in the same corner of a shopping center in Sunnyvale. I bet you can imagine the crowds at lunchtime.
I’ve been injured, but am a (slow) runner and have a bunch of friends who run. We are all old enough to be your mom (but under 50! (=) so you probably have a few places to do laundry. Tee hee

Michigan, Delta Airlines. Delta is the only airline that flies direct from SFO to DTW – convenience wins for me! My whole family is back in MI including two sisters and five nieces and nephews. It is tough to leave every single time. My plan is to get rich and move everyone out here. Let me know if you and Billy figure that one out before me!

In the meantime.. sandwiches, sunshine and yogurtland definitely make things more bearable. Welcome to Cali Janae!!!!!

Ahh, my heart goes out to you right now. I teared up reading about your goodbyes with your family. Glad you’re with Billy and cannot wait to see your little girl soon!

Treadmill dates are the best! On Tuesday’s I have a treadmill date with a running friend that lives about 1.5hrs away. We hit the treadmill & run intervals together. We “talk” during the rest period. Good times!

I live about 2hrs from my family, and while it’s not the same as a few states apart, it is still difficult! It takes some adjustment, but you have an awesome relationship w/ your fam, and i’m sure you’ll be just fine!

Gmail has the new “hangout” feature on gchat..apparently multiple people can all “hangout” at one time.. I haven’t tried it yet, but it looks neat.

Reply

Welcome to California, bloggie friend!! It had to be so so so hard to say good-bye. You have such a close, wonderful family. I moved all the way out here from Chicago, so I kind of understand. But my family didn’t spend HALF the time together as you guys do. I hope you settle in and LOVE it here. :)

Reply

I know it was so hard for you to say goodbye! Your family loves you so much. What a blessing! Enjoy Cali – I hope you love your new home! XO

I’m not going to lie, reading this made me tear up. I’m sure you’re hurting right now, and I wish I could give you a big huge hug! I’m praying you guys get settled in soon and that little girl waits to come out until you’re all done!

Reply

I’ve cried both times I’ve moved away too, and get sappy every time I leave to go home after visiting with my family. It helps if I remind myself how lucky I am to have such an amazing and loving family and that even though I’m not living close to them…we still remain a tight family no matter the distance…hopefully that will help u too bc it def seems that you have a close family as well. :)

Reply

Your family is so great! You have such a great support system!

ok Curly needs to go into modeling. People tell me V needs to go, but she might be cuter than V and that is hard coming from his own Momma. I am so happy you made it!

California is going to be such an amazing adventure for you, Billy and Janilly (please name her that!). I know it is so hard to move away from people you love so much, but I know y’all are going to have such a wonderful life in Cali.

I last flew from Detroit to Nashville. Nashville trumps Detroit times one million. :) Not that I’m biased.

Reply

waffle cone is my favorite but I usually save that for a special treat (cuz the ice cream is not enough of a treat!) and just get it in a cup.

I’d say my magic number is 4 but I’ve been running a lot more 3’s than anything else!

Reply

I always get the ice cream cone in a cup!!! Because cones are cheaper but they TOTALLY give you more ice cream!!! Good call Janae, good call :)

Reply

Welcome to Nor Cal!!

What a sweet relationship you have with your family. I love it. Nieces and nephews are the absolute best. It will be so neat for you to see how your daughter will form the same bond with your siblings, ya know?

I hope your transition continues to go well. It is never easy but just keep trying to focus on the positive of all the NEW things you are blessed to experience!

Last place we flew was Hawaii via LA for our honeymoon! We hardly ever fly so it was def an experience and a loooooong time on a plane from NJ!

Glad you are safely in CA!

Reply

I think the last place I flew was Chicago for work, but now I can’t remember.

My magic running number is 0 right now. This week off is making me go insane.

Reply

We get frequent flyer points for Southwest so we usually fly with them!

My fav falafel place just raised prices so I’m pretty bummed about that!

& my magic running number this week is 4 miles bc we just started our relay training program!!

Reply

I’ve missed all of this – wow! Crazy how quickly life can change in a week.

Reply

Awww, moves are always hardest on kids! I bet they’ll be so excited to see you guys at the holidays. And then your mom can buy grapes!!

Reply

1st choice: sugar cone. 2nd choice: waffle cone (more $$). 3rd choice: dish. Not actually a fan of cake cones.

Flew to my hometown of Rochester, NY 2 weeks ago on United using our miles. Before that, it was Chicago for my brother-in-law’s wedding on American because it was cheapest.

Reply

Last air line I flew with was West Jet to Vancouver. It was a great flight. I love when random strangers tell me about their travels on the flight and this time was no exception. There is something about traveling that opens people up to new things and people that I find very refreshing.

You’re mom is so cute. I love that they went around Cosco to remember you.

Reply

Janae! I have recently found your blog and am reading old posts. This one hit home completely for me! 6 months ago I moved to Europe for my husbands work and saying good bye to my nieces and nephews was the hardest thing I have done.(probably shouldn’t have driven home after that good bye :)) I have taken care of them one day a week for 6 years since I graduated college. Anyways, can’t wait to read more!
