People staring at my belly.

I accidentally laid in bed for a long time this morning and didn’t make it outside until it was a little bit hotter but I still had a great run.

This whole running at sea level thing is incredible and I feel like I don’t even have to breathe because my lungs just absorb all of the oxygen. I did 8 miles this morning at a 9:20 average pace.  I felt like listening to really slow music (i.e. Sarah Mclachlan, Regina Spector, Coldplay) which I loved because it helped me feel so relaxed.

I get quite a few stares when I am running here in Cali compared to when I am running in Utah.   I don’t know why…  I mean it isn’t like Utahans are known for having a million children or anything and so it is normal to see pregnant women everywhere, I still haven’t seen one other pregnant person while I have been here. Also, when I am running at the lake there are a lot of older people walking around that probably still think running is bad for you if you are pregnant and so they definitely stare.

I decided that I will be going down to the t-shirt store today to have one made up with this printed on the front and back:

Screen Shot 2012 07 03 at 10 54 29 AM

I will also be adding onto the running shirt that I will be making, “Yes, I know that my belly button is sticking out an inch from my stomach.”

The lake was surrounded with blankets today because everyone is claiming their spots for the firework show tomorrow.

We will be going to a different lake to watch Fireworks tomorrow night.  In the morning we will be doing our annual 5k in my in-laws community followed by a pancake breakfast.  My ideal day.

————————————

You know how it is the best thing in the world to have hard boiled eggs in your fridge waiting for you to eat them?  Well, I have something even better going on at my in-laws house…

PRE-SHELLED hard boiled eggs.  Taking off the shell of an egg is on my annoying things list that we have to do but my MIL spoils us rotten and does it for us.  Too bad Billy has to go back to school next Monday because I think I am staying here forever.

I will miss you Billy but I can’t part ways with your parent’s refrigerator.  Breakfast of champions:

DSC 2284

There was some strawberry greek yogurt under all of the fruit in the bowl and of course I had an egg and toast that tasted like pie because of the blackberry jam I put on.

Yes! I have a 10k tomorrow morning. It’s going to be SO hot but I’m pumped!
I am totally a running waver. I’ve moved a lot, and it’s funny how in some places people wave back in some places everyone just gives me a weird look. I kind of judge how much I like a place by how friendly other runners/walkers are. So far the bay area and vermont have been the best. :)

Reply

I cycled until 5 days until I had my son and I got SO stared at! But it was the easiest way to get around, I was so enormous! I wish I could attach a photo as it was classic!

And yes, I wave at other runners (in a cool, nonchalant kind of way) and generally get ignored, it really bugs me.

Reply

I love hardboiled (or something in between that and soft-boiled) eggs! I just eat it with Sriracha sauce as a snack.

Reply

Im doing a last minute race, 4 miler on the 4th :) I did 6 slow miles today. I run on main st usually, so I feel like a lot of people stare. Have a great run tomorrow!!

Reply

If I ran by you right now I might stare a little, but it would only be because I’m in awe of the fact that you can run 10 miles at a nice pace in your final trimester!!

I am from Alaska, and I’ve found that people on the trails there smile at each other more than anywhere else. I think it’s because we always have to be looking out for moose and bears and it’s our way of saying we have each others’ backs.

Reply

I am a running subtle waver. More like I point at the runner without moving the pumping arms from their place. You know, the acknowledgement that says we get it cause we”re runners.

Reply

My run today was pretty blah, ran three miles ….it was super hot out and I let it get to me!!! boo.

I have to admit, I have stared at pregnant women before running at the park …but not in a bad way! I couldn’t even imagine running while pregnant, but now knowing someone that has it doesn’t seem all that bad!

Reply

I am not a waver, by any means. I love that your slow, pregnant run would kill me as a non-pregnant runner.

Reply

I would so buy that shirt if you made it! I hate how people question if it’s ok that I run, hike, or go to the gym while pregnant. I listen to my body and it’s fine.

Reply

Pre-shelled takes ‘family’ to a whole new level!! Lucky you.

Reply

I love hard boiled eggs :)

I was actually talking with someone the other day about staying active while pregnant. I will start by saying that this person isn’t extremely active to begin with, but she was going on about how whenever she sees pregnant women walking around, she always thinks “noooo way when I’m pregnant I’m sitting on my bootay and people will wait on me all day”……That just blew my mind a little bit….I guess I’m so caught up in running/fitness myself, as well as reading running/fitness blogs, that when people don’t want to run or swim or bike 5 million miles a day I get a little confused cannot relate even a little bit. You’re awesome for staying as active as you have been!

Reply

You are the cutest prego lady I’ve ever seen! I lovelovelove hard boiled eggs! I have been eating them a lot lately – peeling them is very annoying!

Have a fun 5K tomorrow! I think I am going to hit up the trails with some friends in the morning.

Happy 4th to you and your family!!

Add a liitle oil. It brkeas the surface tension of the water and it will not boil over. Really and truly. It’s about physics, I swear. Nothing else will work, short of using a pot 16 times larger than necessary.

Reply

I always say good morning to other runners, and most say the same but occasionally there are a couple who give me the stink eye.

I love hard boiled eggs! It one of the only 2 ways I will eat them, I generally hate eggs. But I love hard boiled and deviled eggs. Yum. Now I want some, they are perfect for the 4th.

Reply

I always say hi to everyone I pass while running, unless they look really grumpy or scary ;)
Love hard boiled eggs and hate peeling them so I am jealous your MIL did it for you!

Reply

A lot of runners where I live do a sort of smile and nod. I wave if they do (as to not be rude) but don’t take initiative.

I try to run early in the morning, so there are not a lot of people out to stare. I do find if I am out in awful weather in the winter I get a lot of ‘what in the world is she doing’ looks; they’re always fun.

Reply

I have noticed that I tend to stare at pregnant ladies more than I should… just *so jealous!* I can’t wait till it’s my turn! So yeah, some people staring are just jealous/excited TTC’ers :-)

Reply

Yes! Make the shirt. If not, I will make it for you only it will read ‘you wish you were as awesome as me’ because I do! Now that you have informed me of the belly band, I am hoping that will allow me to run longer and farther in my next pregnancy than in my previous ones.

I am planning on doing 5 or 6 miles tomorrow. I usually do a 5k or 20k on the 4th, but I haven’t signed up for one. I just might though tomorrow morning. Love last minute races.

I am most definitely a waver. I love the awkwardness after I wave and they don’t wave back…

Reply

Oh my gosh! By far the worst thing about moving out of my parents house was not constantly having hard boiled eggs at my finger tips!
Buying my own food, I’d spend about $1000000 a month on eggs if I kept them on hand all the time so I figured I would just quite cold turkey :)

Reply

I love hard-boiled eggs too. Did you know that you can buy them without the shells at BJs? They sell them in bags, and I think they are by Eggland’s Best. :)

Reply

We went on one final vacation to the Newport Beach area when I was 7 months pregnant and I noticed all the stares too! Im definitely used to Utah where its more normal to be pregnant than not haha!
Also, we went to Forever 21 at the big mall there and I asked where the maternity section was and the salesperson looked at me like I was crazy! Im glad ours in utah has one because I got some of my best stuff there.

Reply

No plans for the Fourth… yet. We have a large group of friends running a 5K, but we’re at my parents’ house, which is over 2 hours away, and we’re just not sure we can justify driving that far for a 5K. :-/

I usually just give a quick “Hello” or a nod while running. I will wave if the other runner initiates a wave, though.

I did a quick 2-mile run on my parents’ treadmill–it was just too hot to try to slog through miles outside. I usually get stares if I’m running back home–we don’t have a lot of running neighbors, so they’re always sure to stare when I run past. If I’m out a little farther from my usual route I don’t get as many stares. We do have a nice trail along Lake Michigan, but it’s usually so crowded with walkers and bikers that it’s hard to run on.

Reply

I like hard boiled eggs but only when they are still hot. I don’t like them served cold or as deviled eggs. Yuck! I will have a Cobb salad though with cold crumbles. :) I live in CT and there are several pregnant people who I see running.

Reply

I am such a waver. I will wave to anyone and everyone…perhaps people on the trails are the only ones who will wave back too…maybe why I have no real life friends. Great job with that run! :)

Reply

I think it’s fantastic that you are running while pregnant. I fully plan to do the same thing some day and think you are such a great inspiration and motivation! No big 4th of July plans. I wish we were having a local race! I wave to other runner’s when they acknowledge me with a glance. :) Hard boil eggs are delicious! Actually, all eggs are delicious! My running partner got me hooked on eggs when we were training for our first marathon and now I’m slightly addicted. Addicted to the point where my husband now refers to me as “Egg Girl”. I wouldn’t worry about people staring at you. They are just in awe of how awesome you are! :)

Reply

I wave if someone waves at me first, but I always smile at other runners! I feel like people (non-runners) stare at me all the time, especially when I’m running by museums and beaches. Honestly, if I saw you running, I’d probably stare–but because I’m impressed that you are running throughout your pregnancy!

Reply

Hi Janae! I also am pregnant and quickly getting uncomfortable in my running tanks- is the one you have on materenity? It looks nice and long! It would be great if you would share what type on tops have fit you throughout your pregnancy-thanks!

Reply

Hey Lauren!!! Congrats on the pregnancy! That tank is from lululemon and I had it before I got pregnant! They are so long, soft and stretchy that they work perfect with the belly! Let me know if you have any other questions!

I’m running a 4 mile race with my brother. We do it every year in my town. They call it “4 on the 4th” I can not wait so excited!! I love racing!

Mmmm want some of that jam. Love when it has real fruit in it. Delish!
I love your cute running pregnant self! Craig saw your picture when I was reading your blog & asked when you were due- told him 10 weeks before me & you are still so amazing, running like 10 miles a day! He was impressed :) And they are just staring because they are jealous. Seriously!
I did BodyPump today & then a little run afterwards.

We have the annual firecracker 5k tomorrow morning, so that’ll be fun! No kidding, I just inhaled 2 hard-boiled eggs after I got home from work (and before collapsing on the couch and read this!)! That is some kind of crazyness, right there. I love the things! If you haven’t seen this (http://www.theburlapbag.com/2012/03/make-hard-boiled-eggs-in-the-oven/) floating around pinterest, you much check it out! So easy and that’s how I did this batch!

Okay:

A: I can’t get over how cute you are.
B. You have inspired me to start thinking about running. This is a major step.
C. I even packed running shoes to take on my vacation this week– just in case B turns into a reality.
D. Please ship me your in-law’s fridge, all food included.

Thanks for the running inspiration- love it!

you are too stinkin’ CUTE! i love your little belly. you pull it off so well. :)

Pre-shelled hard boiled eggs….LUCKY! I love hard boiled eggs. We buy 5 dozen every 2-3 weeks and we constantly keep boiled eggs in the fridge! I absolutely love that you are still running and preggo..when the day comes for me to be preggo that is my goal, keep on a running! Kudos to you, you are a huge inspiration that is not only healthy but extremely possible :)

Reply

haha you should definitely make that t-shirt!! And I will probably be doing my run indoors tomorrow… High of 98 today and tomorrow!

PRE-SHELLED hard boiled eggs?!?!?!? can i move in, too, pleeeeease?! what an incredible woman your mother in law is! :)

not running any races, but i am getting my sweat on with jillian in the morning! then off to the in laws with my parents, too, for some 4th of july bbq-ing and fireworks!

Reply

I love scrambled eggs and omelettes, but for some reason hard-boiled ones freak me out. No idea why!

Reply

Lovehard boiled eggs. Peeling them sucks tho. Planning on going for an easy run tomorrow morning. Usually I smile or nod hen I pass another runner or walker, unless I notice if they are in the zone. As for othe activities we probably will head over the hill to Santa Cruz and catch the show by the boardwalk.

Reply

I love hardboiled eggs! They sell un-shelled ones at TJs and I love them because I hate peeling them SO much. Glad I’m not the only one!

Reply

I always smile, wave, or say “hello” to fellow runners as I pass them! It’s so nice when others do it to me, and I always reciprocate. It makes me a happy runner :)

Enjoy your 4th of July!

Reply

People stare like crazy around here! I don’t exactly live in the healthiest or most active part of the country, so active people are looked at as being crazy.

I still just can’t believe you’re 8 months pregnant. Yeah, you’ve got a little belly situation going on, but you are still just so tiny! Cutest preggo ever.

Reply

I usually smile at runners as we pass by each other. It’s always awkward when you smile and they don’t, or vice versa!! ;)

And I can’t believe you’re still able to run such high mileage! I’m so impressed with you, girl!

Reply

Talk about the staring – the English countryside, or the small English village when I run the main streets – I mean, there are some serious stares goin on!!!! No exciting 4th plans, except that the kids will be wearing their Old Navy 4th of July flag shirts that a friend from the states brought over recently when I take them all for their dentist appointments tomorrow. Fun stuff. My husband won’t even be here bc he’s in Normandy, France, for a few days, so no grilling for us! That’s cool – I’m okay with missing ONE Fourth of July celebration in my life considering I’m in England the year of the Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics!! :)

Reply

I am running my first 4th of July race, it’s a 4 miler with my friends, Carla and Jenny and I got us fun red/white/blue stuff to wear! It’s gonna be a blast!

Reply

I’m a big time running waver and believe there’s no greater curse you can begot onto your children and your children’s children by not waving back to a running waver.

Reply

I not only wave at other runners when I run past them, but I wave a walkers, bikers, people in their driveways, on their front porches … basically, if I pass a human while I’m running, I wave and say “hi.”

Reply

I’m so undecided on the waving. I want to be a social runner, yet I don’t want people who aren’t really social runners to feel pressure to wave back if they are in a zone. Ya know?

Today was a pump class and 6 miles.

So excited for the 4th!! Can’t wait. Favorite holiday hands down!

Enjoy California!! :)

Reply

You should totally make that shirt!! I definitely plan on running as long as I can throughout my pregnancy (which won’t be for a while) so I will borrow it from you when that time comes :-)

Reply

That is so cool that everyone lays out their blankets ahead of time! That would not fly in NYC, they would be stolen faster than you can say firework. :) Your belly is so cute!!

Reply

That shirt sounds like a good idea, though I think folks either get it, or they don’t and never will. It baffles me when someone acts like it’s a big deal that I’m ‘still’ working out while I’m pregnant (30 wks-ish now)..but why would I completely stop? I’m not injured, just have to tailor my workouts a bit to keep my growing baby safe.. But some just don’t get it. Oh, well. Anyway. I insist on acknowledging fellow athletes when I’m out and about..usually w the eye contact/smile (unless I’m running super hard and can’t muster a smile.. I assume the other runner understands)/ head nod action, but if a wave feels right, I go for it. It bums me out when someone avoids eye contact..why would you not at least nod? Don’t get it..

Reply

I love HB eggs but hate shelling them. Dan and I cooked 18 on Sunday and not all of them peeled well :-(

You are such a cute pregnant lady. My bff is pregnant and trying to run, but she says her boobs hurt too much. She’s 6 weeks, so maybe later it won’t be so painful

Reply

Are your in laws looking for people to adopt? If so I (and my husband and two kids) will be there in a few hours.

I’m only saying this because my Mom told me it’s polite to call ahead. We’re coming anyway.

Well, in my dreams anyway.

Reply

I had a great run this morning! It was just 3 miles but I ran faster than I’ve ever run before–that’s always a great feeling :)

Reply

Have you seen this shirt for pg runners? So cute! http://anothermotherrunner.com/store/tees/this-is-not-a-speed-bump/

Reply

Stares…yes! I ran until I was 39 weeks pregnant and then was able to run about 3.5 weeks post baby. It was my first running since I didn’t with the girls. But i think it helps others to see it’s OK to run, if your doctor gives you the ok. And it just helps clear your mind. For me, I didn’t lose my running base and it enabled me to run postpartum very quickly. Happy prego running!

Reply

Tomorrow does sound like an ideal day! I can’t believe people are already claiming their spot…crazy!
I always wave and say hi to people when I run! Most of the time, they say hi back. I think it’s funny when they’re shocked that I talked to them!

Reply

I got stares while preggo, especially since I was in school for personal training and doing my internship at a gym. An old lady yelled at me to stop picking things up. My mom yelled at me to slow down on the elliptical when she came in for her own training session (we had a student training clinic) and saw me breaking a sweat. Other people just stared. But I also got a lot of props, which kept me going!

Reply

Ran a 5k today, for fun.
Are those hardboiled eggs in water? I always put mine in the fridge with their shells on, and they are a pain to take off!
I do a running peace sign sort if wave. Don’t know why, maybe my inner hippie chic?

Reply

I didn’t run today because my family hiked together. We tried to make it to the lookout at Mount Elden (in Flagstaff, AZ) but then it started to thunder (only a little over a half a mile left! Darn!) and we headed back.

Love hardboiled eggs!! Love them already shelled!! :)

There’s a fun-run downtown that I might drag the family to tomorrow morning… we’ll see!

Happy fourth of July!

Reply

i never am a waving runner except when i am at my parents’ house. everyone here waves and so i always do. they live in a beach town so there are lots of people here on the weekends just visiting, so when i wave and people don’t wave back i roll my eyes and groan about “all the tourists” as if i really live here ;)

Reply

You are way too stinkin’ cute. Sounds like a great run.

Reply

Oh my goodness please tell me that pic of u isn’t recent! U are 8 months pregnant and look amazing! I’m 5 months pregnant and have a bigger belly lol. Glad u enjoyed your run!

I do a head nod while running if I can make eye contact with the other person.

Not a fan of hard boiled eggs but deviled eggs I could eat like candy!
No run today…too windy but I have a 3k planned for tomorrow with my run group!

Reply

My run today was terrible because I, like you, waited until much later to get out of bed to run. Oops. It has been close to the hundreds here with insane humidity. I think the fact that I’ve seen news stories about people dying from running in this heat, I just couldn’t push myself. I’ll repeat that run in a couple of days and hope it goes better. *crosses fingers* Tomorrow I will be spending the day on the lake. No running will be involved, but I will be getting my exercise by running up and down the hundred steps to the lake. =) I hope you have a lovely day and a great run tomorrow!

Reply

Oh let those people stare. You are rocking your baby bump, and I’m sure that little one is enjoying every second of flopping up n down :)

No big plans here, hubby has to work.. boo!! Also, Kuwait doesn’t celebrate 4th of July. I know, nonsense right! In a few weeks they’ll be celebrating Ramadan(i’m sure I totally butchered that word, oh well).. and aren’t allowed to eat during the day. Not sure how they do it, but I know it’s going to stink when I’m out walking and have to sneak into a bathroom somewhere just to take a swig outta my water bottle!!

–HAVE A WONDERFUL 4TH OF JULY!

I’ve stared at pregnant women runners before. It’s not judgmental though. It’s more like it’s not something I see often, and I think it’s awesome! I plan on running as long as I can when I’m pregnant. It’s what my mother did and I can thank her for my running habit :)

Reply

Ah I hate shelling eggs- and I always make the dumb mistake of doing it while it’s still hot! Love boiled egg whites, hate hard yolks- has to be runny!

Reply

Maybe you can help me…. I ran a race today. It was supposed to be an easy 10k. At mile 3 I took the wrong drink & ended up w/a cup full of Gatorade. I drank it even tho I NEVER drink anything but water when I run. At 3.2 miles I started burping & thats when the problem started. I ended up having pukey burps. SO GROSS & had to wait another mile til I got to another water station to get rid of the burning throat. I stopped to drink water & when I started back up I had insane side stitching. I finished the race w/a great time still (PR’d by 3mins), but I was legit green. Ever happen to you? Do you think it was the Gatorade?

Reply

I feel like people stare at me all the time when I run. And I’m definitely not pregnant! But there are lots of friendly looks too. Runners in Vancouver seem to be a very friendly bunch. There’s this one older guy (like 65+ and kicking my ass) I see on the seawall who always says “Good job!” as he passes me. I’m really curious as to whether he says that to everyone or if he just likes me!

Reply

I for sure got stared at while running pregnant (I thought they were thinking “gosh fatty, keep running! You gotta work on that tummy!) but I didn’t care because it made me feel so good. I got really fast in my second trimester! For while there it was the only thing that helped my headaches. Much better than the meds they gave me.

Reply

Oh how I wish I like hard boiled eggs. They look good, but I just can’t get past the smell. I like scrambled eggs, with a ton of ketchup. Disgusting, I know.

Reply

I wonder why people were staring at you running….I feel like it has to be common knowledge at this point that running is healthy for a pregnant women!

Plans this 4th to head to a cookout and pool volleyball tournament! I’m hoping the scattered thunderstorms in the forecast don’t ruin our plans.

Reply

I love having hard boiled eggs in my fridge too – but I also HATE peeling them. My husband does them for me <3

Reply

I’m Australian do no fourth of July plans for me!
Tomorrow I plan to go for a run in the morning a do a pump class at night.
I don’t usually see runners ony route so no one to wave to – I run along a main road.
Yeah lots of strange looks running at 27 weeks pregnant with a pram. Lots of comments at fun runs too!

Reply

I definitely wave, smile, or nod at other runners and I totally get annoyed when they don’t do the same back.

Even though I think I’d run through pregnancy, I think it still might be a little bit of a shock to see an 8 months pregnant woman running, just because it’s not something you see everyday, you know?

Reply

I almost also smile or say hi to another runner or cyclist I’m passing. I think it’s pretty common in the Midwest. I’ve never ran anywhere else, but I have heard that in other parts of the US people are not as friendly. :( My first running coach ran/walk a half marathon about a month ago 5-6 months pregnant so you are definately not alone. You go girl! And I love hard boiled eggs! Yum! Happy 4th!!!

Reply

I think you look so great Janae! I am so impressed and proud of you for continuing to run throughout your entire pregnancy!!! Great job, and I can’t wait until your little hungry runner baby enters the world!! :) and I love hard boiled eggs (just the whites!)

Reply

Janae, you look amazing preggers. Where I live, one of our best regional runners is always pregnant and running. I feel happy when I see her because she looks so happy. I think alot of older people think that running when you are having a baby isn’t good for you. My MIL thinks that running too much can ruin my chances of giving her grandchildren, and is always on my husbands case to tell me to stop running so much!
I think energy is much better spent staring at women who smoke or drink when preggers. That’s not cool at all.

Reply

I’m so impressed to hear that you made it 8 miles in this heat. I ran a 10K this morning, which was awesome but I was dripping in sweat when I returned!

I haven’t run yet today because I’m giving my back a well-earned break for one time. :) (I have a little bit of scoliosis.)
And I do feel like I get stared at when I run. I’m not pregnant, but a high school girl in short shorts and a tight shirt is pretty distracting to the construction workers across the street. Gross.
