Hill workouts hurt.

First and most importantly it is Billy’s birthday tomorrow.  I am more excited than he is.  Today we are doing most of the celebrating because we will be in the car most of the day tomorrow.  Only problem is that he will only allow me to sing to him the Happy Birthday song ONE TIME on the day before his birthday (unlimited on his birthday).  I already used up my one time when he first woke up this morning but he said nothing about singing it in a different language.  So, if you know the song in another language please share with me because I am going crazy not being able to sing it all day long.

I set out this morning with zero desire to run and grumpy to the max.  I was so grumpy I didn’t even want to go to the lake because I knew the lake deserved better than my bad attitude.  At 1.5 miles into my run I ran into a really good friend and she said she wanted to run with me (she had already done 8…she is my hero).

We went on the hilliest run of my life, I promise the picture does not do these hills justice.  This is one of 45 hills that we covered in 7.5 miles.  45 may be a slight exaggeration.

We talked the entire time and it went by so fast and she put me in the best mood.  What would we do without friends?

The reason that hills hurt so much according to Runners World:

Lunch was delicious but the picture just didn’t do it justice.  I had corn on the cob with leftover steak and potatoes.  For dessert I had a strawberry tootsie pop in bed while writing this post.  And I wonder why my keyboard is sticky.

Last but not least I have to share my favorite snack with you.   It is very complicated, take a piece of french bread and put a few slices of avocado on it and eat.

¡Feliz cumpleaños a tí!
¡Feliz cumpleaños a tí!
¡Feliz cumpleaños a ……!
¡Feliz cumpleaños a tí!

And I hate hill workouts. With a passion. My favorite avocado combo is avocado with salt sprinkled on it…if that even counts. :)

Reply

AHHHH THANK YOU!!! That combination definitely counts…love eating it straight up with a spoon:)

Happy early birthday to Billy! I love hills! I don’t have many of them where I live now but I do my best to challenge myself with what I have. I love me some avocado. They are yummy in paninis and also making guacamole. :) Great job on your run…you are incredible!

Reply

THANKS MELISSA! Way to challenge yourself on the hills that you do have around. Now you are making me NEED a panini asap!

Janae, I’ve been searching through your archives for your maternity running belt recco and can’t find it anywhere. Would you mind re-posting the link? I need to get one asap! Thank you so much!

Thanks so much! I’m loving reading your blog while pregnant at the same time as you. Thank you for being such a source of positivity and inspiration!

Janae you are so adorable! I think you should try to find the lyrics in German – guaranteed to make Billy happy :)
I like avocado best as guacamole or sliced thin on sandwiches. I saw a great post from Fuji Mama about making “avocado sashimi” and serving like sushi even though there is no fish, with wasabi and soy on the side. I thought to myself “if I was pregnant, this would be a great sub for sushi” If you like sushi maybe that’s an idea

Reply

THANKS KIM:) I will definitely try to find the German lyrics:) Oh my goodness…I will be making this ‘avocado sashimi’ that sounds absolutely amazing!

Reply

haha that quote in Runners World is funny because Dr. Devita was my biomechanics professor when I went to ECU. that is awesome!

NO WAY…that is so cool!

Was this run in SoCal? I need some good hill routes for HTC training. (this is how I’m distracting myself from being sad you’re in CA and I don’t get to see you) ((SAD FACE))

Safe travels tomorrow and happy early bday, Billy!!

SARAH!!!!!! We were running around Mission Viejo…killer hills. I am so bummed we didn’t get to meet-up. We will be back in September. Wanna plan a get together?!?!

Reply

Not a lot of hills in Florida, but I have recently come to love the hills setting on the treadmill. It has helped me run better outside, thankfully!

Reply

Sabrina, way to take advantage of the treadmill. I LOVE it.

We have hills all over where we live in Georgia. So basically any and every run I complete includes hills these days! :/

Favorite way to eat an avocado: definitely in guacamole. I just made a Chipotle-type dinner tonight for me and Brandon … homemade guacamloe, chunky homemade salsa, black beans, and rice with lime and cilantro. Soo yummy!

Reply

I like to just eat avocados with some lemon and a little salt, love them! But they are also great on burgers or turkey sandwiches. I’m an avocado addict!

Reply

I LOVE avocado on ANYTHING! I think I probably like it best on BBQ Chicken, maybe with salsa and black beans.

My favorite part about birthday’s are getting the family together. I just love having a great big meal with the people I love the most:-)

Speaking of Tootsie Pops, the other day I found one that was Banana!! Totally amazing!

Reply

I was about to write out happy birthday in french, but someone beat me to it! Maybe google other language?

Reply

My favorite way to eat avocado is with a spoon :) Simple and easy!

My city is pancake flat so if I want to do hills I either need to drive to them or run for a while. I am not the biggest fan of hill workouts but I definitely respect their purpose (if only they didn’t trash my legs so much).

Reply

Happy birthday to Billy!

I love avocados prepared simply: smashed, on toast (or a mini bagel!) with sea salt. That’s it!

Not many hills around me, except for bridges (which are pretty tough sometimes)

Reply

Avocado on a grilled cheese sandwich!

Reply

Joyeux Anniversaire! Joyeux Anniversaire! Joyeux Anniversaire a Billy! Joyeux Anniversaire!

Sing it like: joy-uh zonny-vair-saire. Voila, it’s French!

SO SO COOL!! Thank you so much Emily. Can’t wait to try to pronounce those words:)

Reply

I have been following your blog for a while and I love reading your fun and entertaining posts!

P.S. seeing your avocado snack idea reeeeeally makes me want to take one of my roommate’s avocados but I am not that kind of girl.

Reply

EMMA!! Thank you so so much for your comment, you made my night! I think you need to get to the store asap and get yourself some avocados asap:) Have a great night!

Reply

I’m obsessed with avocados and love them on bread, or in a wrap. I really love them in guacamole:)
I just did a hilly 4 mile race, but it wasn’t so hilly that it could count as hill training. I haven’t really done hill training in a long time. I need to start doing that. There is one significant hill on my running route – good enough:)
Happy birthday to Billy!!! I LOVE celebrating other people’s bdays, so fun!

Reply

I love my avocado on Trader Joe’s sprouted rye bread with sliced tomato and sea salt. Delicious!

Reply

happy birthday in French:

bon anniversaire a toi (prounounced “twa”)
bon anniversaire a toi

it translates to happy birthday to you. :)

And i hate hill workouts but usually do them for my long runs bc i’m crazy :)
btw, you look great. i cant believe you are running and that pregnant. You are amazing!

Reply

SO SO COOL!! Thank you so much Alexis. I can’t wait to try to sing the French version. Thank you for your sweet words, you made my night!

Happy almost bday to him!!! Best thing ever: toast with mashed avocado and tomato. Perfect.

Reply

If you don’t want to run maybe it’s necessary to take a day off…..just saying

Reply

It wasn’t my body that wanted a day off, just my attitude. I knew that a run would help me be a lot happier:)

Reply

I did hills yesterday! Yikes! My body was not happy and I was cranky about doing them anyway. Got into a rhythm though and it was fun! Just do it right? Necessary evil of running! I am so impressed you are doing it pregnant bad ass much?! And avocado as guacamole DUH ;) Salty chips AND avocado it’s heaven!

Reply

I always order a side of fresh avacado with my meal when we eat at a Mexican restaurant. I also put it in smoothies that I make for my kids cause they don’t know!

Reply

Favorite way to eat avocado? With a spoon! Seriously, I love to just eat it all by itself. Fresh guacamole is a close second!

I did hills last Friday night. I am surrounded by them! It takes a lot of effort to plan a route without them.

Reply

I love avocado and will eat it almost any way. I like it with crackers, if I don’t have chips or bread near by. I love it on sandwiches, burgers, nachos, salads. My favorite is on Rubio’s Garlic Herb and Shrimp Tacos. Delicious! Hills intimidate me. The half that I’m training for has hills in the beginning and end. They aren’t too steep, but since we live in Houston, where most things are flat, I am training on my treadmill. Happy early birthday to Billy! We are having a birthday party tomorrow for my son, who turns 5 on July 10th. I seriously love everything about birthdays. My family always made birthdays a huge deal, so we have fun celebrating those we love.

Reply

You can’t sing it – but can you play it? Find as many different versions as possible? Perhaps a Chipmunks version?

Reply

Hey, it’s my birthday tomorrow as well! The big 3-0. Tell your husband happy birthday!

believe it or not, i actually put avocado on my pizza tonight. first time ever, and i actually really enjoyed it

Reply

Our 4th of July race was crazy hilly (and hot!) but I loved it. I know what you eman about the entire run feeling like it’s on the hills and your picture looks pretty stepp to me. Happy (almost) Bday Billy!

Reply

I have been having avocado everyday this summer on my ginormous salads.
My favorite though is avocado on a blt.

Favorite thing about birthdays is people let you do what you want when you want and how you want because it is your b-day. selfishness is the expectation.

Reply

Cut the avocado in half, remove the pit and scoop out a but of the avocado to form a whole, crack an egg into each hole and bake for 10-15 minutes….BHAM- your life is changed :)

Reply

oh goodness, avocados are so good in so many ways :) one of my favourites is smashed up on Ezekiel toast!

Reply

Ahhhh avocado. Nature’s butter! :D Which is why it’s just PERFECT plain on bread/crackers/whatever. Salt and pepper is all I need to make me a very happy girly.

My city is super hilly, and I ‘learnt’ to run on a mountain near my house. So for the first 3-4 years of running, it was basically ALL HILLS ALL THE TIME (I did all my marathon training on that mountain). Now I’ve moved to a more suburban area, and there’s no real ‘off-road’ hills, but there’s still PLENTY of paved hilly streets. I have a love/hate relationship with living in such a hilly area hahaha.

Fave bit of my OWN birthday is just feeling special! I don’t care much about presents or celebrations or anything, but I get all warm/fuzzy/teary knowing that everyone is doing their best to make me feel good on this one day of the year! My favourite bit of OTHER people’s birthdays is that I get to make THEM feel special! It’s so easy to forget to do that for the people you love, so it’s great to have a day where you really remember how much you care about them, and actually show it! :)

Reply

Janae- OMG Avocados LOL! Sushi, guacamole of course(HAHA), in salads, umm need I go on LOL! I actually didn’t used to like them but some how they grew on my & now call me OBSESESSED :-D I’ve never done a hilly run but I would love to try it sometime ;-). Sounds like a great workout & can’t believe you are doing it at & pregnant… That’s AWESOME!! You go GIRL!! We definitely have hills nearby. I live in the Washington DC Metro area(Alexandria, VA actually) & there are hills all around my neighborhood. My fav part of my birthday is the ppl I spend my birthday with :-D. I’m not really into parties being thrown for me( I know BOO HISS LOL) but I love doing stuff with friends & my family & having a grand ole time :-O

Reply

I would like to see you “grumpy to the max” because I don’t believe that is possible for you!

Reply

Happy Birthday Billy! I like to celebrate my birthday for the entire month–my husband is not quite on board with that… yet! ;)

I absolutely LOATHE hills! I will go out of my way to avoid the hilliest route when we run, but I know I SHOULD run hills if I ever want to become a better/stronger runner.

My favorite way to eat avocado is on bread with a little sea salt and cracked black pepper! Of course, guacamole is always good!

Reply

I LOVE avocado in guac!

Forgit to add that I live in thfoothills so I am always running a hill at some point in my run. North is pretty downhill, but coming back up. Ouch.

Eh.. i hate hatee HATEE hills! (okay I think you get it! :)) Ohhh and I also dislike avocados. I may be one of the pickiest eaters, EVER !

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BILLIE! My birthday is on Tuesday, but my “birthday week” starts on Sunday.. yay! I already have the first day planned. Bowling & Mexican!

Reply

There is a hill in my neighborhood no matter which direction you run. Sometimes the challenge is fun, sometimes they make me hate life a little.

Reply

Happy birthday to Billy! I hope you all find a nice place to live there. It looks absolutely gorgeous! We currently live in a neighborhood on top of the biggest hill in town, so if I want to run from home, no matter what, I’m doing hills somewhere on the run. I have to drive to get to flats. I actually sort of like it now. I like that feeling of being able to power up them….especially in races! It feels like auto-pilot. =)

Reply

I put it on a turkey burger. Or with chips.
There are hills on all of the runs I do. I try to avoid them, but I can’t.
Best part of birthdays is making whatever pie I want. This part year the best part was the voicemail I got from a 4 year old, singing to me!

All of my outside runs are hilly. Even when I try to plan flat ones (like I do for my long runs) there are at least one or two big hills at the beginning and end. Thanks for looking up why they hurt so much! Now I have an excuse for all of my complaining.

Happy birthday to Billy!!

I think it makes me feel better to know that hills aren’t just harder in my imagination! haha

I am obsessed with avocados. Obsessed!

Interesting factoids about the hills-you are awesome! Good job!!

Favorite part of birthdays:

Maybe Canadian French is different, but this is the version I learned in French immersion/what we teach the kids in school:

Bonne fete a toi
Bonne fete a toi
Bonne fete, bonne fete,
Bonne fete a toi!
(Literally means “good party to you”)

Then there is the birthday song that québécois people sing:
Mon cher Billy
C’est a ton tour
De te laisser parler d’amour
Mon cher Billy
C’est a ton tour
De te laisser parler d’amour

(Translation: “my dear Billy, it’s your turn to let yourself talk about love”. Who knows why it’s the birthday song, but it is!)
